Touring Around Quebec City, QC

Quebec City, dating back to 1608 is one of the oldest European settlements in North America. The European feel is still present today in Old Quebec with its old architecture and French-Canadian culture. Quebec City is the only fortified city in North America still standing north of Mexico with a wall spanning 4.6 kilometers along the city’s west side which was key to holding off the American invasion of Canada during the War of 1812.

Explore Quebec City and the countryside on a full-day sightseeing tour. Start with a complete tour of Old Quebec, the Plains of Abraham, the walled city, including the Château Frontenac and Place Royale, and more. After a quick lunch break, you can also enjoy an excursion along the Beaupré coast, including the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Basilica, Montmorency Falls and Île d’Orléans.

As a part of this package, you’ll spend two nights at a downtown Quebec City hotel.

Train to Quebec City

Whether you are connecting with this package add-on from Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, or Halifax, you’ll be taking the VIA Rail Corridor train route in or out of Quebec City. Depending on your connecting city, this train will take anywhere from 3 to 10 hours. We book all of our guests in VIA Rail’s Business Class which includes access to the Business Lounge and Meals & Bar Service onboard.

On train days when you have some free time in Quebec City, we recommend exploring the cobblestone streets on foot as it is a very walkable city.

Quebec Train Tour

Many Canadian train trips include Quebec tours in their itineraries, making it easy to explore this culturally vibrant province. Quebec is distinctly different from the rest of Canada. It has its own cultural and linguistic identity — making it a truly unique place to visit.

Discover the province's Old World European charm: ornate balconies, terroir-obsessed wineries and a passionate food scene. Then go beyond the edges of the cities, where the wilderness is dense and untamed. Moose lumber through mossy marshes, humble cabins line the lakeshores and wolves howl on cold, clear nights.

The train between Montreal and Quebec City travels along the banks of the St. Lawrence River and, combined with one of our exclusive itineraries, offers an opportunity to enjoy everything this beautiful province has to offer.

At Canadian Train Vacations , our travel experts are here to help you assemble a custom trip that includes all the best sights in Quebec. Whether you want to stroll around Old Montreal, stay at a historic hotel, or learn about Indigenous culture, you can rely on our expertise in choosing train routes and add-on excursions.

VIA Rail Train

VIA Rail operates some of the most popular Quebec trains and connect the province to the rest of Canada. VIA Rail’s Corridor train operates between Ontario and Quebec, with stops in Quebec City, Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal. These trains operate during all 12 months of the year.

Sleeper Train

VIA Rail also runs a sleeper train that connects Quebec to the Eastern provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. When you book your Quebec rail travel package, ask about travelling on one of Canada's two sleeper train routes. Most Quebec City tour packages can be customized to according to your interests. Ask about these popular attractions when you book Quebec tour packages from Toronto and other departure points.

Chateau Frontenac

Chateau Frontenac is one of Quebec City' most famous hotels. Located in Old Quebec, the hotel was constructed as part of an effort to restore the neighbourhood to its 17th-century glory. The original funding fell through, so the Canadian Pacific Railway stepped in and built Chateau Frontenac as part of its railway hotel system.

Over the years, the hotel has been renovated several times. World leaders and other famous individuals have also stayed there while visiting Canada, making Chateau Frontenac a popular destination for tourists. When you book your Quebec train tours, ask about staying at Chateau Frontenac or taking a tour while you're sightseeing.

Old Quebec City

Old Quebec City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a unique look and feel. The area has many historic sites, including ramparts built in the late 1690s to protect the city against enemy attack. It's also home to Petit-Champlain, a street packed with boutiques. You'll find everything from handmade jewelry to one-of-a-kind works of art, along with high-end restaurants, murals and excellent examples of French architecture. Enhance your Quebec vacation with a private walking tour led by a local insider.

#1 Travel Tip: Plan to walk around

Quebec City is a highly walkable city, even in Winter. Make time to walk around the cobbled streets and explore unique boutiques and shops in the alleyways. Rue du Trésor is a hidden gem.

Highlights of Peggy's Cove

This tiny fishing village (population 35) attracts nearly a million tourists per year – drawn to the glow of the iconic lighthouse standing proudly on a craggy shore. The most photographed lighthouse in Canada, it's an icon of local marine heritage.

When to go : Visit during shoulder season (late spring or early fall) for fewer crowds but still pleasant weather.

The highlight : Sink your toes into the sand of Bayswater Beach Provincial Park, a peaceful place to relax and enjoy a picnic.

Recommended trip : The Canada Eastern Rail Classic includes a tour to Peggy's Cove.

Historic Cities of Eastern Canada Tour

Historic Cities of Eastern Canada

This was the first time I’d been on a holiday to North America and also the first time I’d been on an escorted holiday. The group size was around 30 people (mainly couples), in total there were four single travellers on the holiday, most people on the holiday would have been over 50 years old. This holiday isn’t suitable for someone who can’t stand heights or who doesn’t like boat trips as two boat trips are included and lunch up the CN Tower is included, while some of the hotels in Canada are very tall and don’t have that many rooms per floor – I was on the 30th floor of the hotel in Toronto. The first day we got an oldish, not very luxurious coach but the tour director did say the coach and driver would just be for that day and for the rest of the trip we would have a different coach, which was a newish Globus branded coach which had better seating and more leg room than the coach we had on the first day. Apparently the different coach and driver on the first day was down to working hours for the main driver so I imagine it happens every time. In Ottawa the tour director promised us something that wasn’t advertised. It turned out this was the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Museum. I found this disappointing as it wasn’t very interesting and an included tour of the Parliament building or the Royal Mint would have been of far more interest to me. Local guides provided tours in Quebec City and Montreal. I think the one of Quebec City worked well but the one of Montreal was 2 hours, mainly on the coach (after already having spent most of the morning on the coach) alighting only to go inside a Cathedral and at a photo opportunity from a vantage point so I would have preferred a bit more walking around Montreal. For included meals be aware that you won’t have the full restaurant menu to order from but a special menu which doesn’t have as many options, in some cases there was only one available option for starter or dessert. If you book this tour and it’s possible I’d recommend arriving on Thursday and departing on Sunday as both Toronto and Montreal are huge cities and the tour only gives you limited time in both cities. For me it wasn’t possible to stay an extra night in Montreal and I don’t feel there wasn’t enough time to see the city.

The cities we visited were beautiful, I just wish that the time on the bus was less. Change the dinner place in Ottawa, not up to your standards! We did not enjoy the canal cruise, it was too long, boring, and would have preferred that time to see sights. Ben was excellent! His historic knowledge, stories, and sense of humor made traveling most enjoyable. Our bus driver was such a gentleman and so accommodating. His driving was superb, I never felt unsafe. Most enjoyable was Niagara Falls and Quebec. Wish we had more time in Quebec less time in Montreal.

We had a group of 21 on this tour. A great group who enjoy traveling from different parts of the U.S. and Canada. Made all the better by our wonderful director, Mathieu! He not only showed us his home country, but gave us so many interesting facts about everything we felt we had been educated even ...

Love being part of the group but also being on my own to explore streets and gardens. In the photo you can see that I discovered these very interesting window boxes on the second floor in Quebec City. EFgoahead tours are the best! Great hotels and very informative tour guides. Thank you Frank.

Road Trip From Toronto To Quebec City

If you want a straightforward yet unforgettable Canadian adventure, be sure to plan a road trip from Toronto to Quebec City. Connecting these major metropolises and passing through Montreal and various iconic landmarks, this is a trip you're bound to remember for life.

The 800km road trip from Toronto to Quebec City takes 8 hours to drive. Key stops include Boldt Castle, Cobourg Beach, Upper Canada Village, Village Québécois, La Mauricie National Park, as well as the cities of Kingston, Ottawa, and Montreal.

There's a lot to see during this amazing road trip, so be sure to read until the end to plan out the best journey you can.

How far is Quebec City from Toronto and how long will the road trip take?

The road trip from Toronto to Quebec City covers 800 kilometers and takes around 8 hours to drive - if you leave Toronto around sunrise, you could easily get to Quebec City in time for an evening out.

With that said, this is the kind of road trip you definitely won't want to rush - if you can help it. Try to take around a week to explore all the places this epic route has to offer.

Starting off at Lake Ontario, the route takes you past some of the most stunning attractions at the Canadian-American border. This gives you some nice leeway if you want to detour to attractions in North America to spice up your trip.

Ottawa City, Canada with buildings either side of the canal, the Mackenzie King bridge in the background during sunset.

Heading out of Toronto and into Quebec City could get you caught up in traffic if you leave at the wrong time, and Montreal could cause some trouble too - try to plan your stops according to the congestion up ahead and your proximity to the nearest major city.

Best road trip route from Toronto to Quebec City

Road trip route from toronto to quebec city.

Pay a visit to Rice Lake, then spend some time at Belleville before pulling into Kingston. Further east, take a break at Thousand Islands Conservation Area, then detour into America to visit Boldt Castle by boat if you can.

Back on the main route, drive out to Selton and detour to Charleston Lake Provincial Park. Then, get back on Route 401 and follow it to Brockville (be sure to visit Brockville Railway Tunnel!), then visit the Upper Canada Village near Morrisburg.

Spend some time in Cornwall and at Saint-Zotique Beach, get on Autoroute 20 and visit Fort-Coteau-du-Lac. Then get on Autoroute 30 and cross the St Lawrence Tow Bridge and visit St Timothee Islands Regional Park, and be sure to make a stop at Montreal.

Drive past Mont-Sant-Bruno National Park before getting on the Trans-Canada Highway, and visit Village Québécois. Detour to Victoriaville and Parc National de la Mauricie - Entrée St-Jean-des-Piles, then get back on the main route and follow it to Quebec City.

Best places to stop between Toronto and Quebec City

The relatively lengthy road trip from Toronto to Quebec City passes through a number of major cities, so there should be no shortage of places to rest up for a night or two. These are some of the best hotels the route has to offer:

Relax in a spotless room in Montreal

Montreal is one of the biggest metropolises in all of Canada, so it stands to reason that it would house some of the area's finest hotels. If you want an unforgettable stay, be sure to book a room at The Ritz-Carlton, Montreal, famous for its breathtaking interior design .

Montreal, Canada in Autumn with trees lining a large lake the middle and the city of Montreal in the background.

The rooms at this hotel are made to impress, so you're guaranteed to feel rejuvenated after spending a night here. If you're feeling hungry, the three on-site restaurants should have no trouble filling you right up for a day of sightseeing in town.

If you want an ocean-like experience, a saltwater pool is available on-site, and for something even fancier, consider spending an afternoon in the beautiful spa center.

Some days are lazier than others, so if you don't feel like getting out of bed, you can get pampered with an in-room massage. Once you've recharged your batteries, all the best attractions in Montreal will practically be right at your doorstep.

The hotel is a bit expensive, but since it offers everything you could possibly want and imagine, the price tag is more than fair.

Enjoy the very best of Quebec City

The colonial Quebec City is one of the most beautiful spots in all of Canada, so for the cherry on top this road trip, you'll want to book the city's best hotel - that would have to be Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac , whose views of St Lawrence River are as amazing as they come.

The only thing better than the rooms themselves are the hotel's awe-inspiring panoramas, which can be enjoyed from the rooms and terrace areas alike. Also, every part of this hotel just looks five-star - even the hallways are like something out of a medieval castle.

Boasting everything from a swimming pool and hot tub to a fitness area and steam rooms, this hotel goes above and beyond to cater to its guests' every whim.

Every kind of dish you could think of can be found at the on-site restaurants, and once your appetite's been quenched, you can go explore the countless attractions located right around the corner from the resort.

Price-wise, your stay here will be quite expensive by Quebec City Standards, but this is undoubtedly the city's finest hotel, so this is something to be expected.

Things to see on a road trip from Toronto to Quebec City

The road trip from Toronto to Quebec City takes you past some of the most scenic parts of Canada. Listing everything there is to see would be impossible, but these are the places you definitely need to find the time for:

  • Markham - One of the largest cities in the Ontario region and a must-see during this epic drive.
  • Rotary and Ajax Waterfront Parks - These two scenic parks located by Lake Ontario are the perfect places for a campout and some water-based sporting activities.
  • Iroqouis Park Sports Center - If you're into winter sports and there happens to be a game going on, this roadside sports center is a great place to kill an afternoon.
  • Oshawa - This beautiful Ontario city is one of Canada's major automotive and scientific hubs.
  • Jungle Cat Wildlife Park - You can enjoy a guide tour of this wildlife park at night to get a taste of what surviving in the wilderness might be like.
  • Cobourg Beach - Arguably the most scenic beach along Lake Ontario and the perfect place to catch a tan in the otherwise chilly Canada.
  • Presqu'ile Provincial Park - A set of scenic hiking trails that cut through gorgeous wetlands all the way to Lake Ontario.
  • Kingston - Thanks to its unique architecture, this major city by Lake Ontario is often referred to as The Limestone City.
  • Boldt Castle & Boldt Yacht House - A beautiful castle located in New York State located just 30 minutes from the main route by boat.
  • Brockville Railway Tunnel - Canada's oldest railway tunnel is now a major tourist attraction, distinguished by its colorful LED-lit passageways.
  • Ottawa - Although it's a bit of a detour, Canada's capital is a must-see for anyone who wants to make the most of this scenic road trip.
  • Upper Canada Village - A historic heritage park that gives visitors a brief glimpse into living in Canada in the 19th century.
  • Montreal - Home to the Notre Dame Basilica and The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Quebec's largest city is one you definitely need to spend a few days in.
  • Village Québécois - A similar attraction to Upper Canada Village in many respects, this blast from the past features about 100 19th century-style houses and constructions
  • La Mauricie National Park - One of Canada's finest nature resorts, this park is a refuge for countless incredible animals residing along the St Lawrence River.

Mauricie National Park, Quebec, Canada with a view of the lake at sunset on an Autumn day with trees lining the waters edge.

The great thing about this road trip is that you can spice things up at any point by crossing over into The States - if you're feeling adventurous, the states of New York, Vermont, and Maine are never too far from the main route.

Best time to go on a road trip from Toronto to Quebec City

The road trip from Toronto to Quebec City is quite different depending on when you decide to do it - both the route and the final destination benefit from visiting at different times of the year.

If you want to make the most of Lake Ontario during the drive, you may want to do the trip during the warmer months. This allows you to go for a dip and enjoy all the provincial parks that make this route so unique.

Ottawa City's peak tourist seasons are summer and winter - the mid-20s Celsius temperatures in the summer allow for plenty of interesting outdoor festivals, and despite the cold weather in the winter, events like The Quebec Winter Carnival never fail to draw a large crowd.

If you're less interested in mingling and you want to explore the city's signature attractions, spring and fall are also great times to visit. The weather these times of year is quite mild by Canadian standards, and the lack of crowds means you can get a sweet deal on a hotel room.

Also, for non-Canadian travelers, you may want to consider whipping out your winter tires, even if you're traveling in the spring - the cold climate means that winter's snowfall will often linger into March or April, especially around the Montreal area.

Billie Eilish announces world tour, hitting 3 Canadian cities

Singer-songwriter superstar Billie Eilish is launching a massive concert tour — with both good and bad news for her Quebec fans.

The Grammy-winning musician will kick off her upcoming tour in Quebec City on Sept. 29 in support of her soon-to-released album  Hit Me Hard and Soft .

But despite moving on to Toronto with shows on both Oct. 1 and 2, Eilish does not have any concerts scheduled for Quebec's most populous city, Montreal.

After her upcoming dates in Toronto, the singer will move on to the United States, before returning to Vancouver on Dec. 3. From there, her tour will continue on to Australia and Europe for the summer of 2025.

Why big artists are performing in fewer Canadian cities

Eilish's last tour,  Happier Than Ever, saw planned dates in both Toronto and Montreal cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, though Eilish did return to Montreal in late 2023 for the Osheaga Music and Arts Festival.

The news arrived via Instagram, where Eilish shared album artwork showing the pop singer floating in a body of water after being ejected from a door. In the caption, she wrote that she will not drop singles in advance of the release.

"I wanna give it to you all at once," she captioned the image. "I truly could not be more proud of this album."

  • Concert ticket system is 'broken,' say artists. But some experts say targeting resellers isn't the fix
  • Regina-raised dancer joins army of Kens during performance at the Academy Awards

Eilish worked with her brother and longtime collaborator, Finneas, on Hit Me Hard and Soft . The pair recently took home their second Oscar for their big Barbie  ballad What Was I Made For?  In doing so, Eilish, 22, became the youngest person to have won two career Oscars.

Her new album will release on May 17, while tickets for the upcoming concert will go on sale May 3 on Ticketmaster.
