Concert Synopsis [ ]

The show begins with Gomez' shadow behind a curtain posing while performing the first verse of ' Revival '. Right before the chorus, the curtain drops as Gomez walks on the stage during the chorus - wearing a skin colored sparkly catsuit The song ends and pyramid-type objects surround Gomez. The objects move - revealing Gomez now in an attachable cut-out black dress over the catsuit, performing ' Same Old Love '. The objects surround Gomez again, then leaving to show that the black dress has been removed and is once again in her catsuit. Gomez proceeds to perform a remixed version of ' Come & Get It' . After the song ends, she greets the crowd and performs ' Sober '. She then exits the stage for a costume change.

Once she leaves, Gomez appears on the screen wearing different outfits while an instrumental version of ' The Heart Wants What It Wants ' plays. The screen rises and Gomez walks through a cloud of smoke, wearing a black catsuit and dress, performing ' Good For You '. She then performs ' Survivors ', ' Slow Down ', and a remixed version of ' Love You Like A Love Song '. After talking to the crowd for a moment, she performs ' Hands To Myself ' before exiting for another change.

Another interlude plays, and Gomez comes on, with her hair in a French-braid, wearing a tan leotard with a transparent dress over top. She performs ' Who Says '. After, she thanks the crowd and talks to them. She then sits at the piano (that has been rolled onstage) and performs ' Transfiguration ', transitioning into 'Nobody'. She then explains that she has been writing songs for fun and performs a new, unreleased song titled, ' Feel Me' . She exits the stage afterwards.

Another interlude plays while inflatable roses rise from the sides of the stage up to the ceiling. Gomez enters on an latin-type carriage (wearing a gold leotard) and performing ' Me & My Girls ', transitioning into ' Me & The Rhythm '. She then performs 'Body Heat' with her dancers, before getting on the carriage and leaving for a final costume change.

The last interlude plays and Gomez enters in a multi-colored leotard with a jacket over top. She performs a cover of 'Sweet Dreams'. She then talks to the crowd for a final time, asking for them to dance and to have fun for the last songs. She performs ' Kill Em With Kindness ' and leaves, re-entering immediately to perform 'I Want You To Know'. She then sits down to perform the beginning part of a remix of ' Revival '. She gets up, dances, and bids farewell to the audience before leaving the stage, thus ending the show.

Review: Selena Gomez, a Disney Graduate, Majors in Angst Onstage

revival tour 2016

By Jon Pareles

  • June 3, 2016

Selena Gomez wore black for the first segments of her concert at Barclays Center on Wednesday night: a cutaway black gown, a black bodysuit, a black catsuit. She was looking serious, looking tough.

It was the New York City stop on her “Revival” tour, which is named after the album she released last year, her first one outside the Disney empire. The tour is the next step in Ms. Gomez’s makeover from wholesome, baby-faced Disney Channel child actress and good-girl tween-pop hitmaker to a grown-up woman with her own desires, authority and angst.

At 23, she has been through the gantlet of child stardom, teenage upheavals, paparazzi onslaughts and a public romance and breakup with Justin Bieber. “I think all of you have seen my ups and you’ve seen my downs, that’s for sure,” she told an audience that was almost entirely female, from preschoolers on up. “So now I want to celebrate this with you.”

Ms. Gomez has constructed her transformation in the studio, with songs tailored to her by hitmakers like Max Martin and Stargate and video clips that draw hundreds of millions of views. Onstage, in real time, it was not quite as seamless.

The concert moved from resentment to faith to dancing to triumph, filled with songs from “Revival.” Ms. Gomez set aside much of her pop past, and she pushed most of her songs toward current electronic dance music. She introduced a new song, “Feel Me,” which hurls accusations at an ex: “I won’t be caught up in the middle/Through your highs and lows.”

The set started with the new Ms. Gomez, the one who grapples with troubles and resentments. In her black costumes, she sang slow, weighty songs in somber minor keys, rearranged with a deep bass undertow. Signaling her adult prerogatives, “Same Old Love” casually used a four-letter word in its lyrics; “Sober” charged, “You don’t know how to love me when you’re sober.”

She strove to keep a scowl on her face and a glare in her eyes as she sang, but every so often a smile would peek through — and when it did, the squeals of her audience redoubled. They still appreciate the good-girl version of Ms. Gomez, and they sang along jubilantly when Ms. Gomez reached back to her 2011 hit “Who Says,” a pep talk for people fighting insecurity.

Ms. Gomez strutted through an arena spectacle with spiky sets and a busy video backdrop. She shared some line dances with her acrobatic backup troupe, and she constantly hit marks onstage, where electric fans kept her long hair streaming. She has a small voice that benefits from the studio, where it can sound determined and unguarded; onstage, her backup singers could be seen joining her in unison nearly throughout the set.

Ms. Gomez’s band cranked up as she sang Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” but she couldn’t make its bitterness convincing. She was better off in her own perkier, more optimistic advisory, “Kill Em With Kindness.” By then the tough Ms. Gomez had eased off and the positive, friendly one was back — a more comfortable zone for both the star and her adoring audience. “Revival,” the song that ended the show, declared, “I’m reborn in every moment/So who knows what I’ll become?,” and that’s still an open question.

Exactly What to Expect from Selena Gomez's Revival Tour

By Isis Briones

Image may contain Lighting Human Person Clothing Apparel and Crowd

Selena Gomez 's Revival tour starts today in Las Vegas. And while she may have revealed major teasers on social media , there's nothing like the real thing.

"It’s the biggest stage I’ve ever been on, which is exciting—and overwhelming because I’m going to be in heels," she told EW . "I want it to feel big, but not in the way where there’s tons of fire and confetti every five seconds. I wanted big close-up shots of me [on screen] so while you’re dancing and losing your mind, you know what I’m actually saying and the words behind it." Whether you're sitting front row or in the nose bleeds, everybody will get a clear view of Selena.

Given that it's her revival , she went on to say how personal this show will be for her. "This is the first time I’ll ever be playing piano and singing at the same time. It’s going to be very conversational," she said. "Whatever that night makes me feel, I say it whenever I want. When I see a girl crying, or excited, I feel what she’s feeling."

She also confirmed that we're "absolutely" going to get new music for her on tour. "I’m in rehearsals during the day and in the studio at night. You hit those points in your life where you’re super inspired," she explained. And get this: She hopes to release a new album this year. At the moment, "it’s not even remotely close to being done, but I’m going in all different directions and feeling it out," she added. "If it’s great, I’m not going to hesitate to release it."

As for the squad? She's not going to pull a Taylor Swift. "I think I have a different everything about me. I’ve worked for my whole career, and I’ve always wanted it to be about that," she said. "I love being able to work with other artists I admire, but I have a lot to do on my own before I am willing to make it all about embracing other people." But don't feel like you're missing out on something: she's bringing along opening acts Bea Miller and DNCE, so everyone's definitely in for an incredible show!

The mid-tempo “Feel Me” opens with the lyrics “No one loves you like I love you / I never cheated, never lied / I never put no one above you / I gave you space and time / And now you’re telling me you miss me / And I’m still on your mind / We were one in a million / Our love is hard to find.”

Gomez had previously previewed a snippet of the song on Snapchat.

The singer will be on the road in the United States promoting her Revival album through mid-July, when she’ll embark on international leg of the tour.

Selena Gomez’s ‘Revival’ tour doesn’t quite deliver on its name

revival tour 2016

Selena Gomez’s “Revival” tour stopped at Verizon Center on Saturday night, and fans looking for a memory didn’t have to settle for a T-shirt or a poster: They could also take a photo against a backdrop sponsored by Pantene. Gomez is not just a spokeswoman for the hair-care company but one of the latest proponents of the music industry’s version of “lather, rinse, repeat”: Find success with Disney, branch out into pop music, mature into “adult” artist.

Gomez is in the midst of that last step in the cycle, and she released her sophomore album, “Revival,” in October. Despite its title, topless cover photo, restrained writing and adult-oriented lyrics, the album and accompanying tour find her dipping her toe into the pool of maturity rather than doing a cannonball (or belly-flop, depending on your perspective), as Christina Aguilera did circa “Stripped” or Miley Cyrus since “Bangerz.”

“Revival” may be an over-the-top title for a second album from a 23-year-old, but Gomez has had a contentious few years: She fired her parents as managers, broke up with Justin Bieber, dealt with rumors about drug addiction and underwent chemotherapy to treat lupus.

“You’ve seen my ups, and you’ve seen my downs,” Gomez told the packed Verizon Center crowd. “Let’s just have fun, okay?”

“Revival” is plenty of fun, but it’s not a wholesale rejection of the catchy, simplistic dance-pop that Gomez has peddled since breaking through in 2009. The album is more about the evolution of pop music in general, as electronic dance music — or EDM, as it’s known — has been overtaken by more-restrained songcraft. Case in point: the versions of old singles “Love You Like a Love Song” and “Come and Get It” that Gomez performed Saturday where the burping synths of EDM-pop were replaced with hip-hop-inflected grooves.

And while she occasionally deals with adult themes, her lyrics are still marked by the clunky awkwardness of a young adult trying to seem older; for every “leave this dress a mess on the floor,” there’s a “syncopate my skin to your heart beating.”

The false maturity of “Revival” extends to her live performance, where a crew of dancers, singers and musicians do all the heavy lifting. Gomez’s voice has never been particularly impressive, and in concert, she often cedes the microphone to her backup singers. And unlike other pop stars who focus on their dance moves rather than their vocals, Gomez doesn’t really dance, either: Her repertoire is built on two-steps and wind-machine-assisted hair-flips.

But even with her weaknesses as a performer, the concert — with its giant inflatable flowers, exercise-ball dance routines and chariot rides — pleased her preteen and teenage fans, who even screamed in excitement during costume-change video interludes.

It seems that it’s only a matter of time before the final step in Gomez’s Disney princess pop-star cycle: Las Vegas residency.

Selena Gomez's former assistant says the singer didn't 'want to be alive' during her 2016 tour

  • Selena Gomez's new documentary "My Mind & Me" premiered on Apple TV+ on Friday.
  • The film shows Gomez spiraling toward a mental health crisis during her 2016 "Revival" tour.
  • In one clip, Gomez's former assistant says the singer had thoughts of suicide and her eyes were "pitch black."

Insider Today

"Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me" pulls the curtain back on the singer's "psychotic break" that landed her in a hospital in 2018.

The new Apple TV+ documentary, which premiered on Friday, opens with footage from Gomez's "Revival" tour in 2016. During rehearsals and while on the road, she is shown spiraling toward a mental health crisis that led her to cancel the tour after 55 performances.

"At one point, she's like, 'I don't want to be alive right now. I don't want to live,'" said Gomez's former assistant, Theresa Marie Mingus, during an interview clip. "And I'm like, 'Wait, what?'"

"It was one of those moments where you look in her eyes and there's nothing there," Mingus continued. "It was just pitch black. And it's so scary. You're like, 'OK, fuck this. This needs to end. We need to go home.'"

Gomez's close friend Raquelle Stevens also opened up about the confusion and pain she endured at the time.

"We had to have a really serious conversation with her, of like, 'What is going on?' Her answer was also like, 'I don't know. I can't explain it. I wish you could feel what it feels like to be in my head,'" Stevens said of Gomez.

Related stories

"I just remember it being very chaotic and she was hearing all of these voices," Stevens continued. "They just kept getting louder and louder and louder. That triggered some kind of psychotic break."

In 2017, Gomez underwent a life-saving kidney transplant that she needed as a result of her lupus. One year later, she suffered more health complications that exacerbated her declining mental state. She was eventually brought to a psychiatric hospital .

"If anybody saw what I saw, in the state that she was in at the mental hospital, they wouldn't have recognized her at all," Stevens said of Gomez.

The superstar's mother, Mandy Teefy, added that Gomez's family found out about her "mental breakdown" through TMZ .

"I was scared she was gonna die," Teefy said. "It's a miracle she got out. But there's always the fear that that's going to happen again and it hurt us so much."

In a voiceover, Gomez reflected on her experience in the facility, where she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder .

"I'm gonna be honest, I didn't want to go to a mental health hospital," she said. "But I didn't want to be trapped in myself, in my mind, anymore. I thought my life was over. I was like, 'This is who I'm gonna be forever.'"

Later in the documentary, during a volunteer trip to Kenya in 2019, Gomez is shown opening up to a local nursing student about having thoughts of self-harm.

She recently told Rolling Stone that she "never actually attempted suicide, but spent a few years contemplating it," as paraphrased by editor Alex Morris.

"I thought the world would be better if I wasn't there," Gomez told Morris.

"I remind myself that I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the psychotic break, if it wasn't for my lupus, if it wasn't for my diagnosis," she added later in the interview. "I think I would just probably be another annoying entity that just wants to wear nice clothes all the time. I'm depressed thinking about who I would be."

If you or someone you know is experiencing depression or has had thoughts of harming themself or taking their own life, get help. In the US, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline , which provides 24/7, free, confidential support for people in distress, as well as best practices for professionals and resources to aid in prevention and crisis situations. Help is also available through the Crisis Text Line — just text "HOME" to 741741. The International Association for Suicide Prevention offers resources for those outside the US.
