Journey Lead Singers In Order: History and Band Members

lead singer of journey tribute band

In this article, we delve into the captivating history of Journey, an iconic rock band that has left an indelible mark on the music industry. From their humble beginnings to their meteoric rise to fame, Journey has mesmerized audiences worldwide with their unique sound and timeless hits. Join us on a journey through time as we explore the remarkable story of this legendary band.

Formation of the Band

Journey was formed in 1973 in San Francisco, California, bringing together a group of highly talented musicians. The founding members included Neal Schon, Gregg Rolie, Ross Valory, Aynsley Dunbar, and George Tickner. With their combined musical prowess and creative vision, they set out to create something extraordinary.

Early Years and Musical Style

During their early years, Journey experimented with a fusion of rock, jazz, and progressive influences, creating a distinctive sound that set them apart from their contemporaries. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1975, showcased their musical versatility and marked the beginning of their incredible journey.

Evolution and Breakthrough Success

In 1977, Journey underwent a significant change that would forever shape its destiny. Steve Perry joined the band as their lead vocalist, injecting new energy and unparalleled vocal range into their music. This lineup change proved to be a turning point for Journey, leading to a series of chart-topping albums and unforgettable songs.

Chart-topping albums and Hit Singles

Journey’s breakthrough came in 1978 with the release of their album “Infinity,” which became a massive success. The album spawned the hit singles “Wheel in the Sky” and “Lights,” propelling Journey into the mainstream spotlight. They continued their winning streak with subsequent albums, including “Evolution” (1979) and “Departure” (1980), which produced hits like “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin'” and “Any Way You Want It.”

The Iconic Album: “Escape”

In 1981, Journey released their most iconic album to date, “Escape.” This album elevated their status as rock superstars and solidified their place in music history. Featuring the mega-hits “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Open Arms,” and “Who’s Crying Now,” “Escape” became an instant classic, captivating audiences with its emotionally charged lyrics and powerful melodies.

The Power Ballad Era

Journey’s success continued into the mid-1980s, defined by the rise of power ballads that struck a chord with fans worldwide. Songs like “Faithfully,” “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” and “Send Her My Love” showcased the band’s ability to create heartfelt and anthemic ballads that resonated deeply with listeners.

A Change in Direction

As the 1990s approached, Journey faced challenges and underwent significant lineup changes. Steve Perry departed from the band in 1987, leading to a period of transition as they searched for a new lead vocalist. Despite these challenges, Journey remained resilient and continued to produce music that captivated its loyal fan base.

Journey’s Enduring Legacy

Although the band’s popularity waned in the late 1990s, their music never faded from the hearts of their dedicated fans. Journey’s timeless classics continue to resonate with audiences of all ages, thanks to their emotional depth, infectious melodies, and inspiring lyrics. Their songs have become anthems for perseverance, love, and the power of music itself.

Gregg Rolie

Gregg Rolie, a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, served as the original lead singer of Journey. He began his musical career as a co-founder and lead vocalist of Santana before joining forces with Neal Schon to form Journey. Rolie’s soulful voice and exceptional skills as a keyboardist and harmonicist contributed to the band’s early success. He showcased his talent on albums like “Journey,” “Look into the Future,” and “Next.” However, Rolie transitioned to co-lead vocals when Steve Perry joined the band in 1977.

Steve Perry: The Voice of Journey’s Greatest Hits

Following Steve Perry’s departure in 1987, Journey experienced a series of lead singer changes. Steve Augeri, known for his vocal range and stage charisma, took over from 1998 to 2006. Jeff Scott Soto briefly joined the band in 2006, leaving his mark with his distinctive style. However, it was Arnel Pineda who breathed new life into Journey as the current lead singer. Pineda’s incredible vocal resemblance to Steve Perry, coupled with his dynamic stage presence, won the hearts of fans worldwide. Since 2008, Pineda has seamlessly integrated into the band, injecting fresh energy and passion into their performances.

Paul taylor, keyboardist/vocalist/songwriter - winger, tammy scholten, former entertainment director - branson landing - branson, mo.

"…you go to check out a tribute band and you forget they’re a tribute band; that’s the case with Journey from the Heart . Ryan Christopher and Shareen Ann knock it out of the park vocally , and the band is top-notch. Highly recommend!”

Michael Britt, Guitarist - Lonestar

“ My favorite era of music is the 70’s-early 80’s. Journey From The Heart plays some of the absolute best music from that era. Shareen sings the Heart stuff so well that you will not hear a better Heart tribute band . They have so many great songs and the band is so solid that it feels real , not like a caricature. Then there’s the Journey songs… same rockin band that morphs into Uber-realistic Journey music with a voice that is eerily close to vintage Steve Perry . All would be good based on the vocals of those two alone but the band is strong and they just get better as the set goes on. You will hear classic hit after hit and you will walk out going, Damn!”

"Every once in a while, you will come across an amazing lead singer, and I was fortunate enough to do just that! The “voice” that stopped me in my tracks and sent me down a “journey” of reliving my youth and singing along to my favorite Journey hits, belonged to Ryan Christopher. His voice is one that if you were to close your eyes during his performance, you would think you were listening to the amazing Steve Perry live in concert.”

Subscriber only, things to do | is south florida home to the best journey tribute singer hear for yourself at fort lauderdale’s seaglass festival, headlining at the annual rosé wine event on friday, john d’agostino and tribute band majesty of rock will faithfully revive hits of journey and styx..

The stylish rosé beach party known as Seaglass will return to the sand along A1A in Fort Lauderdale on Friday through Sunday, offering a profusion of blush wines, food and all the sexy people chilling in flamingo-colored attire.

Best known for its all-inclusive offering of more than 30 rosé wines, along with spirits and craft beer, this year Seaglass will feature an expanded menu of food from some of the area’s favorite dining spots. They include Burlock Coast, Even Keel, Coconuts, Carlos & Pepe’s, Timpano, Wine + Garden, Hatch, Boardgasm and Sicilian Oven, among others.

While the event will include the customary DJ, the creators of Seaglass understand that the go-to good-times soundtrack these days is music that’s nearly 50 years old from the likes of classic-rock icons such as Journey and Styx.

There may be no better translator of those songs than South Florida tribute band Majesty of Rock and its extraordinary lead singer John D’Agostino, who will headline Friday’s opening night at Seaglass. Saturday’s musical act will be alt-pop band The Collektives (featuring Tatiana Blades), followed on Sunday by country singer Gabriel Key.

Fort Lauderdale-based Majesty of Rock has been playing the hits of Journey and Styx on the tribute band circuit for a decade, performing everywhere from private country-club soirees to local park festivals on both coasts of South Florida (their next local concert is at Weston Regional Park on Feb. 10). Business is good, but that’s not why they do it.

“This is the stuff we grew up with. It makes us happy when we can play it and we see the response of the crowd,” says bandleader and bassist Rob Doyle, 60, a Tamarac resident and telecommunications engineer by day. “It’s good music. If it’s good music, it’s always good music. It’s never gonna lose that.”

Majesty of Rock is not a tribute band concerned with trying to look like Journey and Styx, but puts in hours of rehearsal time to “sound as close as we can to what people remember, to what people hear on the record,” Doyle says.

Broward County-based Journey/Styx tribute band Majesty of Rock, from left: Daryl Tomas, John D'Agostino, Dennis Pelchat, Rob Doyle and Barry Gruber. (Tom Craig/Courtesy)

At his peak, Journey frontman Steve Perry had one of the most distinctive and powerful voices in the history of rock music. While singers in many Journey tribute bands struggle to hit and hold the higher notes in songs such as “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Open Arms,” D’Agostino makes it all seem effortless. His rendition of Journey’s ballad “Faithfully,” with minimal accompaniment from the band, is a cell-waving showstopper.

It all works for Hollywood resident Becky Coleman, who first saw Majesty of Rock a few years ago at a festival in Dania Beach.

“They were so great. They respect the music and just let the songs speak for themselves. That’s all I want, you know what I mean?” says Coleman, 45. “Of course, the singer is amazing. He looks like a rock star.”

D’Agostino is a New York native who grew up in Coconut Creek and performed in various South Florida cover bands since he was a teenager. He had a unique ability to handle the soaring vocals of some of the most popular bands in pop and rock, from early Bee Gees to Journey, Styx, Boston, Kansas and Rush.

Doyle was a veteran of several cover bands in South Florida and his native Canada when he discovered D’Agostino performing in a bar in Coral Springs and pitched the idea of a Journey cover band.

“When you close your eyes, most people say they hear Steve Perry. They still say that to this day, which is a testament to John, his natural ability and the work he’s done with his voice,” Doyle says.

D’Agostino, 65, who lives in Delray Beach and works a day job in home remodeling, acknowledges being obsessed with Perry since he first heard Journey’s 1978 single “Lights” on the radio.  He’s had no vocal training, unless you count the hours of his youth spent listening to favorites David Gates (Bread), Dan Fogelberg and Art Garfunkel, then Perry, Dennis DeYoung (Styx) and Steve Walsh (Kansas).

“I wasn’t normal. Everyone called me a freak of nature,” he says, laughing. “I grew up with speakers on either side of my head, playing these songs, trying to sound exactly like them, getting in perfect timing with them.”

His ability to work in the higher vocal range came naturally, D’Agostino says.

“When I was younger, I sounded more like a girl. So I used to do a lot of female vocals back then. I used to do Heart, Pat Benatar,” he says, laughing. “Boston was so easy for me. Rush was easy, until I got about 25, because (singer Geddy Lee) was really high.”

Performing the music of Journey in Majesty of Rock — other members of the band include guitarist Daryl Tomas, keyboardist Barry Gruber and drummer Dennis Pelchat — is “the highest honor” he can give to Perry, D’Agostino says, and he’s happy to share the music with others who love it.

“If you listen to any one of our shows, almost every song, everyone is singing,” he says.

FOREIGNERS JOURNEY – The Ultimate Tribute Band

Christine Delaney Press Release

lead singer of journey tribute band

This tribute show features keyboardist Paul Kochanski, bassist Jimi Lyons and lead singer Keith Carmichael (all formerly of the Journey tribute show Captured ). Together Paul, Jimi and Keith have teamed up with guitarist Clinton Lurvey and drummer Justin Pace to form the most authentic tribute to both Foreigner and Journey .

Since its inception in 2014 this authentic tribute band has gained national recognition at festivals and concerts in Chicago, New England, Pennsylvania and many theater/auditorium shows. Together the current lineup bring years of live performance, songwriting, recording, and touring experience to the band.

The original Foreigner was formed in 1976 after founding member Mick Jones found himself stranded in New York in the wake of his previous band’s break-up.  While continuing to write music, Jones auditioned a new band and eventually found a group that generated the right chemistry. In 1977 Mick Jones, Ian MacDonald, Al Greenwood, Ed Gagliard and Dennis Elliott recorded their first album entitled Foreigner , which went on to sell 5,000,000 copies in the United States alone.

The rock band Journey was formed in San Francisco in 1973 but did not have commercial success until 1978 when they released the album Infinity which contained the song “Wheel in the Sky.” Infinity became a certified platinum album and set the band on the road to stardom. From 1978 to 1987, Journey released hit after hit, including “Don’t Stop Believin’” (1981). The Recording Industry Association of America indicates Journey has sold 48 million albums in the U.S. and their worldwide sales have reached close to 90 million records, making them one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time.

Tibbits Executive Director Christine Delaney notes, “Last January Tibbits’ RUMOURS concert sold out quickly so I encourage everyone to get this year’s tickets early.”  Delaney added, “ Foreigners Journey is captivating; they do an amazing job with music we all know and love.”
