Pelhar Dam is located 58 km from Mumbai which makes it an excellent destination for a one-day trip from Mumbai. The dam is surrounded by the Tungareshwar Mountain range that houses the Tungareshwar temple. Popular tourist attractions here are the Pelhar Dam and its adjoining lakes and waterfalls, along with the Tungareshwar temple. There is also the Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary where you can see foxes, hares, leopards, and boars.

The summers are here and the mercury is soaring. A perfect time to spend your days near water bodies to neat the heat. These are the times when Maldives, Andamans, Bali and Goa would be on everyone's wish list. But with the COVID scenario not allowing much degrees of freedom to explore the far of lands, here's a perfect week long road trip itinerary from Mumbai that will get you up close and personal with the gorgeous and lesser known beaches along the coastal belt of Maharashtra.

Day 1 - Mumbai to Awas

As you start off your journey down south from Mumbai, the first beach you will come across will be Awas beach. Just 30 minutes away from Mandwa Jetty in Alibaug, Awas beach is the perfect place for you to lazily sit beneath the towering whistling pine trees as you gorge on the vast and expansive beach area while the sun sets over the horizon.

Not yet surrendered to commercialization, Awas Beach, in our opinion is the best beach on the Alibaug-Murud belt. If a peaceful period of time is what you seek, then Awas beach will definitely not disappoint you.

Day 2 - Awas to Harihareshwar

Breezing past through coastal route, overlooking gorgeous sea forts, castles and lighthouses along the Raigad coast, you will reach a beach where you are about to have an unparalleled experience.

A 2.5 km long untouched black sand beach bed is the place where you are ought to have the most peaceful time in the company of the ocean. Major attraction at here is the Kal Bhairav temple, that draws numerous tourists here. But even if you are not spiritual, there is something for you at the place.

Right behind the temple, along the route of the 'Parikrama' (circulation route around the temple) is a cliff side that opens up into the Arabian sea. A small trek down the cliff and there are some gorgeous rock formations on the walls of the cliff. Totally photogenic and Instagram worthy!

A ferry ride across lies Velas beach, that is well known for the nesting site of Olive Ridley Turtles. Watching these little creatures hatch and make way to the ocean is a phenomenon worth witnessing.

Day 3 - Harihareshwar to Ladghar

Sitting quietly on the coast of Dapoli, is this beach with azure-blue waters that will for sure give you peace to your strained eyes. The beach area is pretty vast and frequented by a few people.

Being a sandy beach, you can indulge in the water sports activities. But our recommendation is to opt for the Dolphin Boat Ride, one of the best places to spot the beautiful dolphins, from a pretty close range.

Day 4 - Ladghar to Guhagar

One of Konkan's most famous beaches, Guhagar is the place for everyone who want to have a lovely time near the sea. On the way to Guhagar, a pit stop at Anjanwel Lighthouse will totally stun you with panoramic views of the sea.

A little further from Guhagar, you will come across Velneshwar beach. A rock-free beach with soft sands and lined with coconut trees is perfect to stroll, swim or sun bathe. Best part of travelling on a coastal belt is every few kilometers you will come across a beautiful beach!

Day 5 - Guhagar to Ganpatipule

Well, Ganpatipule requires no introduction. It is one of the most popular beaches of Maharashtra. Silky white sand and cool surroundings are for sure to relieve the stress you have ensured en route the bumpy road.

The road that runs parallel to the ocean offers some of the most lovely views and classic vantage points for those awesome pictures. The stretch of 10-12 km between Ganpatipule and Ratnagiri is one of our favorites, because the views are just awesome. Best enjoyed with a cup of tea from the roadside stalls while sitting up on the cliff watching the waves crash at the base.

Day 6 - Ganpatipule to Ganeshgule

It has been 2 years since we first visited this virgin beach, but the memories of the place are fresh in our hearts. Totally off the route, this gem of a beach is a testimony of serenity and beauty. Not known to many, it is a perfect hideaway if you are seeking solace and calmness.

Crystal clear water with turquoise blue shades, scintillating golden sands and a beach area that is completely for yourself, there is nothing more that you can ask for from a place.

Day 7 - Ganeshgule to Tarkarli

Just a few kilometers away from Malvan, Tarkarli is one of the places on west coast of India that showcases rich underwater life. A pristine white sand beach and a crystal clear water body is perfect for all water babies.

The ocean bed is laced with some beautiful coral reefs and beautiful fishes which you can witness by indulging in scuba diving or snorkeling. The vibe of the place increases manifold by its tranquil and calm atmosphere. And add to this, one of the most delicious cuisines on earth, the Malvani cuisine which is totally delectable and finger licking good.

To wrap up, all we've got to say is, while you may be enticed by the charm of Andamans or Maldives or Goa, the Konkan belt of Maharashtra, which is still not gripped by commercialization, has rich cultural and natural diversity on offer. If the traveller in you aches for a good hike, head to Igatpuri. The short escape is surrounded by the Sahyadaris and dotted with ancient fort ruins, pretty resorts, and small spas. Taking the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and driving through the Sahyadri range that runs along the Konkan Coast , brings you to the mountain pass of Malshej Ghat. Come August, moderate showers make the sylvan valley abundant of wildlife and waterfalls, and all the more alluring. Spend the weekend visiting the eponymous falls, climbing up to the sixth-century Harishchandragad Fort, trekking to Darkoda Peak, or simply trying to identify the varied bird calls.

Things to remember:  While driving to Malshej Ghat amid rains will offer you great views of the misty valleys and gurgling streams, be cautious while driving as the roads turn super slimy during this time of the year and the mountainous area is prone to accidents.

Mumbai to  Mulshi

Talk about road trips from Mumbai and chances are, the first suggestion that people will throw your way, is of driving to Lonavla—no doubt, it has a lot to offer from the serene countryside to thrilling adventures . But if you wish to steer clear off the crowded and raucous of the resort town, skip the turn to Khandala. Keep driving further on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway towards the Mulshi-Paud Road, and you’ll have yourself a weekend of serenity and quiet. Deep forests sway with the cold wind, a swollen River Mula welcomes you, and a picturesque beauty holds your fancy wherever you turn—Mulshi is a true sight during monsoons. Visit the Mulshi Dam, explore the forts of Dhangad and Koraigadh, and spot variety of birds as you trek through the woods or camp here overnight.

Mumbai to  Wai

Next time you dream of a road trip from Mumbai that takes you straight to strawberry farms, skip Panchgani and pick its quaint neighbourhood, Wai. Even if the picturesque banks of River Krishna and lush greenery around don’t lure you in, ancient temples and intriguing Maratha architecture here surely will. Wai has played backdrops to many Bollywood flicks including  Omkara  and  Bajirao Mastani , thanks to the cloudy skies and light pleasant showers that always keep it company.

Mumbai to Tarkarli

If you have had enough of Goa but still want to have some beach fun, Tarkarli is waiting for you. While the long drive seems to be a vacation in itself, the Ganpatipule-Ratnagiri region is no less than a paradise to beach-bums. And Tarkarli is one coastal adventure not to be missed. Arrive here to go under deep waters and swim with sea creatures amid corals. Bask on the Malvan Beach. Visit the 17th-century Sindhudurg Fort for a dose of history. With a clean white sand beach and a few adventure sports, you can never be disappointed if you’re looking for a relaxing beach and a good ride. Murud beach is about 40 km further away from Kashid and it has a fort built in the sea – makes for an interesting watch. Road Conditions: The road from Mumbai to Alibag is pretty decent, and should be renovated soon. Alibag to Kashid (and onwards to Murud) is a thin winding road, but almost all of the 1-hour journey is along the coast, making it a wonderful drive, and more than making up for the potholes on the road. Bonus tip: If you’re looking to add some variety to your journey, you could instead take the road via Roha while coming back. It ends up around 40 km longer, but there is a small sanctuary on the way, which makes the drive very green and picturesque. Dhabas: Food is a slight issue in Kashid – there are no dhabas after Alibag, and only a few homemade food options in Kashid, mostly specializing in seafood. Vegetarians might find it hard to find good veg food. Time: 3-4 hours Attractions to Visit: 1. Nandgaon Beach 2. Phansad Dam 3. Kashid Beach 4. Murud Janjira Fort 5. Datta Mandir 6. Korlai Fort

Known For : Malshej Falls Pimpalgaon Joga Dam Harishchandragad

A beautiful hill station With numerous waterfalls and dams, and a couple of forts, Malshej Ghat is one of the popular spots for bike road trips from Mumbai and Pune. Monsoon again is the best time to visit when the entire route is green and picturesque. Just around 130 km, the ride might leave you wanting for more. Road Condition: Half of the time would be spent on getting out of the city traffic. You won’t be out on the open till half an hour after Kalyan, by which time you would almost be there. The road to Malshej Ghat from Mumbai is in a decent condition, so you won’t face many troubles. with its numerous lakes, waterfalls and mountains, Malshej Ghat is popular among hikers, trekkers and nature lovers. 8. Sula Vineyards in Nasik

If you’ve got a refined taste for things, then how can you not take a trip to the Sula Vineyards in Nashik. The vineyard is 1800 acres wide and is a great place to let loose and have some fun with your friends. The months of January to March are the best time to visit the vineyards as you can take part in the grape stomping activity and also attend the SulaFest music concert held at their outdoor amphitheatre where you can also camp. 9. Mount Abu

Being the only hill station in Rajasthan, the destination is treated as a retreat by tourists as well as locals. Thus, the ideal time to visit Mount Abu is during the monsoon or winter starting from July till February. Mount Abu is a sight for sore eyes as compared to the desert that is Rajasthan because it has waterfalls, lakes, rivers, and luscious green forests. Time: 12-13 hours Attractions to Visit: 1. Gokarna (meaning “cow’s ear”), known for its beaches and located in Karnataka is called so because it is supposed that Lord Shiva had appeared from a cow’s ear on earth. Due to this, the place has become famous as a pilgrimage site for a lot of Hindus. If you’re looking to take a longer road trip, then a trip to Gokarna via the NH 48 is something to be considered. The view while driving is something out of a movie with rocky mountains, the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea visible on either side of the road. 11. Igatpuri

Igatpuri, located in the district of Nashik is a small town surrounded by Sahyadri (the highest peaks) or otherwise also known as the Western Ghats. Igatpuri is a popular spot as Bollywood films shoot their outdoor scenes and songs here. You can reach Igatpuri by NH3, and since it is a short ride, you can travel back and forth in a day. The best time to visit Igatpuri is during the monsoons/winters – June to February. Time: 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours Attractions to Visit: 1. Myanmar Gate 2. Kasara Ghat 3. Vihigaon Falls 4. Scenic Road Trips From Mumbai

Mumbai is rich in culture and festivals suited for everyone to enjoy. You will find everything possible to entertain yourselves in the Bollywood capital of India. If you were a resident in Mumbai, you would look to unwind by making short trips around the city to relax and rejuvenate over the weekend. Mumbai is not short of these destinations, given that it is located on the edge of Maharashtra, the home to the mighty Western Ghats, filled with lush mountains, waterfalls and other natural wonders. These journeys will bring out a lot of joy in you, and these scenic routes through the entire ride will be etched in your memories forever. Here, we take a look at the several road trips you can take along with your friends and family around the city of Mumbai.

Blessed with a magnificent array of forests, waterfalls, lakes and hills, Lonavala is a must-visit place in the Western Ghats, and is a popular getaway spot for a reason.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Lonavala is during the magnificent winter season in the months of October to February, when the lush mountains are adorned with mist and beautiful rain. The tourists can then explore a plethora of outdoor activities, as Lonavala is ideal for these situations. The weather is quite ideal during this time, with temperatures ranging from 19 to 22 degrees approximately. The friendly sunshine makes the outdoor activities more fun and enjoyable.

Lonavala sees the highest number of tourists during the winter season not only due to the pleasant weather, but the treks and camps that take place around this time. So, kindly plan the trip ahead in order to make sure your journey is hassle-free. Especially, after the rains in June to September, the places look resplendent and breathtaking, making it more of a memorable experience for all. 

Best Routes

The gorgeous hill station has a lot to offer, right from waterfalls, lush greenery and ancient rock caves. The entire route from Mumbai is pure enjoyment, and the visuals are dreamy, scenic and quite mesmerizing. The scenic journey is best experienced in a car ride with family and friends. Located just 2 hours from Mumbai, travellers can quickly transport from the hot, sultry weather in Mumbai to the cool, misty air of Lonavala. The hill station is just around 90 km from the Maharashtrian capital, and can be easily covered.

There are two popular routes to ride along to the destination. One route is via the Mumbai-Pune Highway which covers a distance of 86 km within 2 hours and the road conditions are excellent. It is most preferred by travellers as it passes through beautiful cities like Khandala. Some other tourists prefer the NH 48, which is slightly longer, but is a good alternative as it crosses some scenic, quaint views and places like Panvel.

Places Of Interest

While riding down the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, you would find some popular destinations along the way, which is an added benefit as it allows you to stop and explore. One is the Mumbai Snow World, the city’s largest snow park, a great stop for kids to run around and explore. You can even visit the other theme parks along the way such as Essel World and Imagica Theme Park. 

Keep an eye for the Lohagad fort, perfect for taking stunning pictures amongst the ruined remains. The landscape in and around is perfect for some trekking which is fairly easy. There are some great restaurants as well, such as the famous Khalapur Mutton, Sunny Da Dhaba popular for the Punjabi dishes, and the German Bakery Wunderbar, known for its baked goods, sandwiches and beverages. If you wanna stop by a resort, the Fariyas Resort offers a luxurious dining experience with a variety of cuisines on offer.

Alibaug, is a scenic coastal city situated in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. It is a gem of a spot, and is very popular for its splendid beaches and ancient forts.

The breathtaking coastal town in Maharashtra is perfect for a quaint getaway from Mumbai. The best part about visiting this  town set closer to the sea is that Alibaug has a great tropical climate with a dash of fresh breeze. The best time to visit Alibaug would be ideally between November and March, especially if you want to experience the ideal, pleasant and warm Alibaug weather. 

Summers here do get hot and humid, but if it doesn’t bother you much , you have plenty of coastal waters to dip into. Monsoon season starts sometime around June and continues till September, which makes it an off-season here. Travellers can expect frequent downpours during this time, but the surroundings are enhanced more, filled with lush green surroundings and rain washed vistas. Do note that the famed boat service in Alibaug does not function around this time, so plan accordingly. 

The coastal destination is not far away from Mumbai and it takes approximately 2 hours 33 minutes to complete the 98 km trip. Nothing could beat the glory of travelling down a nice highway with your friends and family on a coastal trip, and the Mumbai to Alibaug route ensures that. The best route used by travellers is the NH66, which is the fastest route as well with excellent road conditions, mild traffic and minimal avoid road closures.

There is an alternative for travelling from Mumbai and it takes more time than the previous route. This route has some tolls on the way and is slightly longer at 111 km, which means it would take around 3 hours to reach your destination. The road conditions are decent down this road but adds more time due to traffic. It is advised to always take a look at live maps to check for road closures and other traffic updates while travelling on these highways.

Even on the short journey, there are plenty of short stops you can make to create more live memories and enjoy the trip further. Down the NH66, you would witness the Nerul’s Flamingo point, known for flamingo spotting. These marshes are beautiful especially during the monsoon, which is the breeding season for flamingos. Belapur Fort is a 16th century fort sitting atop a small hill, now in ruins. It is a popular trekking site for avid travellers.

You would come across some beautiful gardens and sanctuaries in this route, such as the Karnala Bird Sanctuary, a massive area amid peaceful natural surroundings, housing a host of indigenous species of avifauna, including migratory and aquatic birds. The Native Biodiversity Garden is a local nature park and garden overlooking a dam, flaunting some wild and unique species of floral plants and trees.

The wine capital of India is situated on the banks of the river Godavari, and is a popular tourist destination for its vineyards, pilgrimage sites, natural spots and a lot more.

The town is known for its religious and historical importance, and is best experienced during the winter seasons if you wish to explore it uninterruptedly. Between October and February, the city experiences a cold and dry climate. It allows for a romantic getaway and gives you more reasons to travel outside.

In general, Nashik does experience some extreme weather conditions. The summers around April to June are harsh here and can get beyond 39 degrees celsius, so it is pretty much an off-season around these months. Between July and September, the wine capital of India receives the right amount of rainfall that transforms the city with the greenery flourishing well, perfect for monsoon lovers and offbeat travellers.

The town of Nashik is located approximately 170 km away from Mumbai and can ideally be covered up in 3.5 hours. One of the best routes is via NH160 which takes you on a scenic route via Thane, Kalyan and Kasara. The road condition here is excellent and it’s also the fastest route with light traffic and some tolls on the way.

The NH160 is a two lane road that is longer but it offers some of the best scenic views of the stunning Western Ghats. You can find several resting stops to marvel at the Ghats and even admire some waterfalls on this route. The alternative route for travelling to Nashik is via NH48 and NH848 which is about 220 km and takes about 5 hours. Always ensure to check live maps before the trip to check traffic and other vital information. 

This route takes you through the depth of the Western Ghats where you can witness several natural marvels on the way. You can stop over at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the greenest patch of Mumbai metropolitan, known for migratory birds and snaking trails. The Ganesh Ghat overlooking the splendid Ulhas River, is sprawling with all kinds of indigenous flora and is great for sunset views.

You would later pass by the Vihi Waterfalls, a natural cascade surrounded by forests and greenery, perfect for picnics, short treks, hiking and even water sports. For a session of peace and quiet, stop by the Myanmar Gate in Igatpuri, which is the entrance to the Vipassana Center, the largest meditation center in Asia. For the avid foodie, look out for Kath and Ghat Restaurant, a local Maharashtrian restaurant which serves authentic local dishes and seafood specialities.

Mumbai, the city of dreams, is home to a ton of places to visit, which naturally calls for road trips. Fortunately, the city is ideally placed on the map for one to indulge in some fun travel over the weekends, be it the Ghat mountains, coastal spots or natural wonders. The terrain doesn’t disappoint either, with the routes featuring some incredible roads and magnificent views.

It is perfect for solo bike rides for ones who want to feel connected to the roads, the environment and the views.It is even enhanced when you travel by car with your loved ones. These places help you completely detach from your monotonous work schedule and you end up creating some spectacular memories. It is advised to plan in advance, look out for seasonal events and if you love travelling, you would enjoy ticking off these beautiful destinations off your checklist as you go down these scenic routes around Mumbai.

MUMBAI GOA ROAD TRIP – THE COASTAL ROUTE

Road trips are fun to explore new places. India encompasses numerous spots across different parts throughout the country. So, it doesn’t matter which part of the country one lives in, there is always an option of planning a road trip in India.

We did a 10 days motorcycle road trip from Mumbai-Goa-Mumbai via the Coastal Route traversing through scenic seaside villages with endless stretches overlooking the sea. Ride on the sea with your vehicle loaded on a ferry and feel the sea breeze showering you with salted kisses. The coastal route is worth an experience.

This route is less explored as it takes much more time than the other two popular routes of Mumbai Goa Highway (NH66) and Mumbai-Pune-Bangalore Highway (NH4). If you are a traveller and like to roam the roads just like us, this route is for you.

In this article, we will guide you through the coastal route and share our experiences which can help you plan this beautiful road trip.

DAY 1 – MUMBAI TO HARIHARESHWAR

Route – Mumbai~Kashid~Murud Janjira~Agardanda~Dighi~Harihareshwar (222 kms)

Ferry Point – Agardanda to Dighi Port. (From 8 am every one hour till 9:30 pm)

Our stay on day 1 was at Harihareshwar. You can also plan to finish your day at Shrivardhan which is around 20 kms before Harihareshwar.

Once you hit NH66, just before Karnala there are many breakfast options. We ate at Joshi Wadewale serving authentic Maharashtrian breakfast. Puneri misal is a must try.

Move ahead to Alibaug via Vadkhal junction on NH66. The coastal route begins from here. Skip the halt at Alibag as it can be easily explored any other day from Mumbai. Around 30 kms from Alibag and on the way towards Murud Janjira is Kashid Beach . There are lots of shacks with hammocks offering snacks, cold drinks, and coconut water. You can relax here for some time. 

If you are looking for a more secluded beach, then skip Kashid and ride 15 minutes further to Nandgaon Beach . A peaceful and silent place with clean water. Good place to relax in shade of the coconut trees. There are not many eateries here.  

We took our first ferry at 1:15pm from Agardanda jetty. It drops at Dighi Port situated on the bank of Rajpuri creek in 15 minutes. From here, Harihareshwar is 48 kms. Road from Dighi is under construction but still a manageable ride.

Sadguru Krupa Khanaval (7350380167) on Dighi road serves homemade meals at a reasonable price. We tried veg & non veg thali. Food was simple and tasty.

Harihareshwar Beach is a stretch of calm and serene waters with unpolluted cool breeze wafting along the sea-shore. After a long ride, this is a perfect place to spend the evening. Visit the 16th century historic Harihareshwar Temple located on the coast. It offers a great combination of natural beauty with spiritual enhancement.

DAY 2 – HARIHARESHWAR to GANPATIPULE

Route – Harihareshwar~Bagmandla~Vesvi~Harnai~Ladghar~Dabhol~Dhopave~Guhagar~Tavsal~ Jaigad~Ganpatipule (164 kms)

Ferry Point-   

• Bagmandla to Vesvi (From 7:30 am every 1 hour)
• Dabhol to Dhopave (From 6:45 am every 45 min)
• Tavsal to Jaigad (From 6:40 am every 1 hour)

Day 2 is all about ferry crossing. There are 3 ferries to cross. We took the first ferry at 10:30 am. We were late as we spent the morning doing photography at Harihareshwar.

After a 30 minutes ride, you reach Bagmandla Jetty . The ferry crosses the river Savitri and drops you to another side called Vesvi in 5-10 minutes. It saves you almost 30-40 kms of ride.

Once you reach Vesvi, you need to head towards Dabhol Jetty via Kelshi~Harnai~Murud~route. This is a wonderful stretch of internal village roads. There are many places where you would like to stop and take your time to admire the views and take photographs. Of course you should, as you are roaming the roads to enjoy the journey, aren’t you?

We took our 2nd ferry from Dabhol at 3:45 pm which dropped us at Dhopave in 10 minutes. From here, your next destination is Tavsal Jetty which is 50 kms away. And then, 22 kilometers more and you reach Ganpatipule.

We would like to share a small experience here. It was already 4:30 pm when we left for Tavsal. Our concern was whether we would be able to catch the 6:40 pm ferry. Missing this means waiting for another one hour. The roads were pretty good but narrow with a lot of hairpin turns and for miles we were the only souls to be seen. You can imagine the thrill of riding alone.

It was just when we were soaked in our aloneness, climbing the ghats we came across two young cyclists who were slowly pedaling their way up. I slowed down the bike and initiated a quick conversation. Cycling all the way from Mumbai they were also going to Goa. This was their first bicycle trip. They too were heading towards the jetty. I informed them about the ferry timings. Cheering them up I accelerated. We wish we could stop and listen to their on road experiences, but we did not want to miss the ferry.

We reached the jetty 15 minutes before time. There were not many passengers. We were waiting for the ferryman to allow us in. And when he did, I got up to start my motorcycle and unexpectedly the cyclists turned up just before the ferry was about to leave. And there we were, stretching ourselves and one of them sharing their experiences as the ferry started moving with the wind gently kissing our faces. Their story reflected courage and determination. It was a good feeling to meet these inspiring souls. 

After a 20 minutes of ferry ride, we reached Jaigad Jetty. Knowing we wouldn’t meet again, bidding them goodbye we parted our ways.

We reached Ganpatipule at 8:30 pm.

DAY 3 – GANPATIPULE to TARKARLI

Route – Ganpatipule~AareWare~Pawas~Devgad~Tarkarli (181 kms)

No more ferry crossing. Right till you reach Malvan, ride on this beautiful stretch with wonderful views of lush greens, clear, sparkling waters of pristine white beaches, and ancient colorful temples each of which has a unique story to tell.

Before you begin the ride, visit the 400 year old famous Ganpatipule Temple situated on the beach.  Around 1 km from the temple is Prachin Konkan Museum . This is an open air museum featuring sculptures depicting traditional konkan life and culture. A trip to Ganpatipule without visiting this is incomplete.

After a 30 minutes of ride, you will reach a combination of two beaches Aare & Ware which are located next to each other. The stretch is so breathtaking. Definitely a must halt. There is a certain freedom in finding a small piece of the world that belongs only to you, if only for a short time.

There are many places on this route where you would like to stop. Visit some villages on the route. Talk to the locals, fishermen. The people of Konkan are very helpful and humble.

Other places to explore enroute – Devgad & Kunkeshwar

We reached Malvan at 7:00 pm. Our stay was at Ghar Malvankarache (8600381490) – a homestay run by a humble family. They have budget friendly rooms which are clean and comfortable. But above all the food is just awesome. I tried Prawns Masala with Malvani Vade. It was simply delicious. Next day morning for breakfast, Archana aunty served us Ghavane with Cocunut chutney. Whenever I visit Malvan again, I am definitely going to eat here.

DAY 4 – EXPLORE MALVAN

A day is not enough to explore Malvan. Malvan is a kind of place that makes you want to stay on forever if possible – with the waves and the sands, the trees and the stars. But even if you are here for a day or two, you will take back something- if nothing else a snapshot of a unique seashell on a mesmerizing beach.

Take a leisurely walk through the villages, when sunlight filters in through the palms. You will pass women sorting dried fish outside their homes. Give them a smile and you will surely receive it back. This little Konkan town has a bustling jetty with a tangle of boats and roof tiled homes where the scent of wood smoke and aromas of fish curry drift into your memories.

Places you shouldn’t miss to see – Tarkarli Beach , Chiwla Beach , Deobagh Village & Sindhudurg Fort

If you love watersports, then indulge yourself in Scuba Diving , Dolphin Safari and other water activities held here. 

DAY 5 – TARKARLI to GOA

Route – Tarkarli~Vengurla~Shiroda~Goa (109 kms)

It was time to go GOA. We were excited.

As we were riding towards Vengurla past peeping palm trees, towards a turn I heard a voice which seemed familiar to me. I turned to see and it was just what we hadn’t expected. There they were: the two cyclists. We were happy to meet them once again. 

We used different modes of transport while roaming the roads but we could connect with each other the joy of enjoying the road trips. Road trips are full of surprises, isn’t it? Who knows, we could even meet in Goa.

Keep riding 50 kms till you reach Vengurla. Leisurely ride past the village in the shadow of the verdant plantations of cashewnuts, mango and coconut trees.

Around 3 km from the Vengurla market, Sagareshwar Beach is hidden away behind rows of tall casuarinas swaying in the wind. A small temple of Sagareshwara (Lord of the Sea) is located on the beach.

Located at the end of a winding hilly road and about a 45 minute ride from Sagareshwar is Shiroda Beach. A less explored and virgin region of the Konkan, Shiroda beach is carpeted with silvery white sands, cool blue waters and gentle sea breeze.

Other places to explore enroute – Nivati Beach , Redi Beach & Sawantwadi

We reached Goa at 4 pm. Our stay was in Anjuna, North Goa. Having checked in our guest house and freshening up, we spent the evening at Vagator Beach. If you are a party going person; then this is definitely the place for you with rave parties going till the wee hours of night. We somehow managed to find our small corner of happiness on this crowded beach

DAY 6, 7 & 8 – GOA, GOA & ONLY GOA

Hurray!! Finally in Goa. Yes, the much awaited destination. You have to plan these 3 days well depending on where you wish to stay between North & South Goa. These will again depend on your travel taste and what you want to experience in Goa. For peace and solitude, and offbeat experiences, head to South Goa.

We will share in short how we spent our 3 days in Goa –

Day 1 – We explored places which were near our guest house from Anjuna. Overall distance covered 40 kms exploring Baga beach, Sinquerim Fort, Reis Magos Fort, Fontainhas & Chapora. You must try Fruit Salad with Ice Cream at Scarlet Juice Centre, Chapora.

Day 2 – This day we rode 85 kms to South Goa to experience kayaking in the backwaters of Cola Beach . Cola beach is one of those offbeat destinations, where the beautiful blue lagoon meets the unstoppable wave of the Arabian sea.

You can rent a kayak for 30 minutes to surf through the backwater at Rs 150 only.

On your way back to North Goa, if you are able to reach before dusk take the route through Parra Road .  Lined with palm trees and fields on both sides, end your day watching the magical sunset.

Day 3 – An impulsive decision and we were riding towards Ribandar Jetty from where a ferry (free of cost) would take us to Chorao Island . Having done with beaches we wanted to explore something different. It seemed we had escaped into a sleepily quaint, laid-back and picturesque village from a different era with its Portuguese-styled manors and churches. It is also home to the offbeat Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary .

Once done with the island, we headed straight towards Morjim Beach to have lunch at Smoke Fish Cafe (8975557019) The restaurant is run by a family on the terrace serving authentic Goan homemade cuisine. One of the best foods we had in Goa.

We ended our last day shopping at Anjuna Flea Market and then taking a quiet walk on Anjuna Beach retrospecting on our journey from day one. This road trip had been one of the best things in life we had experienced.

Two more days on the road still…. The journey was not over yet.

DAY 9 – GOA to MURUD (DAPOLI)

Route – Goa~Kankavli~Chiplun~Khed~Dapoli~Murud (392 kms)

This was a long ride for us. Almost did 400 kms. We took NH66, the four lane Mumbai-Goa highway till Khed and then took a diversion towards Dapoli.

When we had halted at Sangameshwar for lunch, we decided not to stay in any of the hotels on the highway but instead chose to ride a few extra kilometers and stay on the beach. It was as if the sea was calling us back to the coastal route. So I called Aviraj Niwas, a homestay at Murud Beach in Dapoli where I had stayed earlier and immediately booked a room.

The highway is in good condition from Goa to Kankavli and you will enjoy riding on this four lane highway cruising at 60 kmph. After Lanja the road turns into a two lane. And you have to ride carefully as the road widening work is in progress and there are diversions every few meters.

These bumpy roads were tiring for both of us. But as soon as we left the highway and took a diversion to Dapoli we felt relief. We were once again riding on the coastal route. The sky at the sunset formed a perfect backdrop for a ride along the winding road. And in no time the moon slowly climbed up and casted its silvery reflection.

DAY 10 – MURUD (DAPOLI) to MUMBAI

Route – Murud~Dapoli~Mandangad~Tol Phata~Mangaon~Mumbai (250 kms)

Tired, but still we got up early in the morning as we had to go to Murud Beach for Dolphin Safari. We decided on this at dinner last night while talking to our host. He assured us that dolphins are guaranteed to be seen. So we thought of taking a chance. We did see a few of them after a long wait in the middle of the sea. The ferryman was kind enough not to drop us at shore without the sighting of dolphins.

Murud is a small town with a scenic and long stretch of beach dotted with crab holes and swaying palms. It also has many beach resorts situated amidst coconut plantations.

We explored a new route for our last day on the road. From Dapoli market, we took a left turn towards Mandangad . It took us to Mangaon on NH66 through internal village roads.

Returning home after being 10 days on the road was a bit depressing. I remembered one of John Denver’s compositions, ‘’ Hey, it’s good to be back home again”. 

This homecoming was quite different from all the others I’ve had in my life. Coming home conjures up numerous emotions, and we were returning home with pleasant memories.

Mumbai To Rajasthan Road Trip: Know The Route, Itinerary, Meals & Stay Options

Wanting to break free from the monotony of the lockdown and start afresh? How about taking a road trip from Mumbai to Rajasthan? The exhilarating trip covering breathtaking landscapes and several stunning cities will boost up your mind and soul all over again. We’ve planned out an itinerary for y’all from Mumbai to Rajasthan that will cover 10 cities and will take around 13 days. You need to take the NH48 highway and also ensure that you get your FastTag, as there will be multiple tolls on the way. Here are all the deets.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad-Mount Abu- Udaipur- Jodhpur- Jaisalmer-Bikaner-Mandawa-Jaipur-Ranthambore-Chittorgarh-Surat-Mumbai

Day 1: Mumbai-Ahmedabad- Mount Abu

Ahmedabad is around 531 kilometres from Mumbai and will take around 10 hours from Mumbai. We recommend that you start your journey early in the morning so that you can reach Ahmedabad in the evening. After starting from Mumbai, you can have your breakfast at New Jalaram Kathiyawadi, at New Charoti Toll Plaza,Ghol, Maharashtra.

The eatery serves delicious pure veg and Jain food. You can have a heavy breakfast here with paratha sabzi, idli sambar, fafda jalebi, etc. Or if you want to hog on some Persian delights on the way like dhansak or lagan nu custard  you can take a halt at Parsi da Dhaba at Varwade. 

Once you reach Ahmedabad, you can take a small detour to have a food break at Ekta restaurant, situated at Samarkha Cross Road. The place serves delicious snacks as well as heavy meal options.

You can spend a night at Forest Eco Lodge and wake up to the views of the mountains and the clear blue sky in the morning. The homestay has a sweeping lawn overlooking beautiful vistas, where you can enjoy your breakfast.

Day 2: Exploring Mount Abu And Leaving For Udaipur At Night

Mount Abu is perched on the higher expanses of the Aravalli Range and is blanketed with pristine forests. The hill station offers pretty views of the lower valley. From Mount Abu, you can visit the 13th-century Dilwara Jain Temple Complex.

Located 2 and a half kilometres from the Mount Abu settlement, the complex has 5 spectacular temples built in white marble. From Dilwara Jain Temple Complex, you can head towards the Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary to enjoy a high-altitude jungle safari. You will also get to spot many rare and gorgeous birds at this sanctuary. From here, you can drive towards the first man-made lake in India, the Nakki lake.  But before visiting the lake, you can have your lunch at Jodhpur Bhojnalaya, around 7 minutes drive from Nakki Lake. Here you can have authentic Rajasthani thali, as well as Punjabi and Jain food. The Dal Bati served at this eatery is a must-try. 

You can spend the rest of the day at Nakki lake, which is vast and profoundly serene. The toad rock at Nakki offers arresting panoramic views of the lake. You can also enjoy boating on the lake while soaking in the cool breeze.

At around 7 PM, you can start for Udaipur, which is around 3 hours from Mount Abu. At Udaipur, there is a music-themed hostel overlooking Lake Pichola . You can stay there for just ₹500/night. Or if you don’t prefer a hostel, you can stay in Udai Niwas, also by Lake Pichola. This is an old haveli which has been turned into a heritage style hotel. At these hotels, you can have your dinner in an al-fresco setup while enjoying the dreamlike night view of the city of lakes. The next morning, you can have a soulful breakfast with a clear view of the lake.

Day 3 & 4: Udaipur Tour

Udaipur is home to spectacular architectures like the Jagdish Temple, the City Palace and Bagore Ki Haveli. You can start your Udaipur exploration with the Jagdish temple, the construction of which was completed in 1651. Just beside the Jagdish Temple, is the City Palace, which is one of the most iconic structures of Udaipur. In proximity to these structures, lies the 18th-century Bagore Ki Haveli.

You can return to Lake Pichola in the evening to enjoy the sunset. Take some rest in the hotel for the night and continue towards Jodhpur the next day, early in the morning.

Day 5: Reaching Jodhpur Via Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh

Jodhpur is roughly 5 hours away from Udaipur. On the way to Jodhpur, lies the Ranakpur Jain Temple Complex and Kumbhalgarh. The Ranakpur Jain Temple Complex is known for its 1444 intricately carved pillars. The Kumbhalgarh Fort, which is a UNESCO world heritage site, houses the second longest wall in the country.   The Unexplored Great Wall of India!

When you reach Jodhpur in the evening, you can go binge-eating on some local street food like Mirch Vada, Dal Bati, Mahkaniya Lassi and Kachori. Jodhpur has many budget hotels that offer amazing views of the fort , where you can halt for the night. If you prefer a hotel, you can put up at The Arch Boutique Homestay or Dev Kothi Boutique Heritage Stay.

Day 6:  Exploring Mehrangarh Fort, Bishnoi Village And Entering Jaisalmer

The most iconic structure in Jodhpur is the Mehrangarh Fort, which is also the biggest fort in India. The colossal hilltop building, constructed in1459 by Rajput ruler Rao Jodha, offers jaw-droppingly beautiful views of the city. If you love to explore the rural side of Rajasthan, you can take the Bishnoi Village tour nearby.

Have some snacks in any local food joint in the evening and then start heading towards Jaisalmer. Jaisalmer is only around 4 hours from Jodhpur, so you can plan your dinner at the hotel at Jaisalmer. At Jaisalmer, you can have a camping experience in the desert at Sam Sand Dunes. Sam Sand Dunes camping charges for a pair around    ₹ 7000 that is complete with the food and entertainment.

Day 7: Desert Safari, Camel Ride And Jaisalmer Fort

The next day, you go on a desert safari of the Sam Sand Dunes and also enjoy camel rides. Sam Sand Dunes, is one of the most authentic desert dune sites in the whole of India. In this place, travellers can witness magnificent sand dunes that are 30-60 meter tall. This rare desert lies just at the edge of the Jaisalmer Desert National Park. These sand dunes have been compared to the Sahara. This site is located 45 km west of Jaisalmer city.

Taking a 44-minute drive from Sam Sand Dunes in the afternoon, you will reach the palatial Jaisalmer Fort. There are several cafes inside the Jaisalmer Fort like the German Bakery and Coffee Shop and the Kuku Coffee Shop. Have a heavy meal at one of these cafes before heading to Bikaner, 5 hours away from Jaisalmer.

Day 8: Bikaner Tour And Entry To Jaipur

Bikaner is one of the most ravishing cities of Rajasthan with a plethora of royal forts and palaces. As part of a combined trip, you can cover the noteworthy ones among them. You can start with the 16th century Junagarh Fort, around which the modern city of Bikaner has developed. The red sandstone carvings and the stunning motifs at the fort will leave you spellbound.

Around 7 minutes drive from the Junagarh Fort, lies the Lalgarh Palace, which is known to change colours according to the sun’s position. A part of the palace, known as the Laxmi Niwas Palace, has also been turned into a heritage hotel. A few metres away from here, lies the Karni Mata Temple.

Day 9 & 10: Jaipur Tour

The Pink City, Jaipur is home to a large number of marvellous forts, gorgeous palaces and magnificent temples. These historic architectures, along with the vibrant culture of Jaipur, attract tourists from all over the world. Be it the 300-year-old Hawa Mahal, the grandiose Amer Fort, the City Palace or the Nahargarh Fort, each and every place within the city will leave you mesmerised. At Jaipur, there are several Rajasthani style hotels where you can put up for a couple of nights. We recommend Pandya Niwas at Nahargarh Road as it is an affordable pick with all the required amenities.

Arrive at the hotel from Bikaner and take enough rest for the night, as the next two days are going to be hectic. Apart from forts and palaces, Jaipur also boasts of some traditional marketplaces, the most famous being the Bapu Bazaar and Johari Bazaar. Day 11: Jaipur To Ranthambore

On the morning of day 11, leave early from Jaipur and drive towards Sawai Madhopur. Check-in at a hotel or a tent. You can select The Ranthambore Bagh, as the tents out here are rustic and charming, and sit in the heart of the greens.

Apart from the large tiger population, the place is famous for chital, nilgai, wild boar, sambar, rufous tailed hare, toddy cats, sloth bear, mugger crocodile and more. The wildlife reserve is home to many pretty bird species like flycatchers, waterfowl, flamingos, sarus crane, grey hornbills, cormorant, serpent eagle, bronzed-winged jacana, painted spurfowl and nightjars. A large number of migratory birds flock near the enormous water bodies at the park. If you reach Ranthambore in the morning, you can embark on the safari in the evening. Day 12 & 13: Ranthambore To Chittorgarh And Then Back To Mumbai Via Surat

On Day 12, head towards Chittorgarh Fort from Ranthambore. Chittorgarh Fort is around 5 hours 40 minutes drive from Ranthambore. Chittorgarh Fort, which is the biggest fort complex in India, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled in Chittor, atop the hills, the mammoth fort complex incorporates 19 large temples, 20 large water bodies, 4 memorials and also some victory towers.

At 8 minutes drive from the fort via the Chittor Fort Road, lies the Jai Chittor Restaurant, where you can have your final meal of Rajasthan, before leaving for Mumbai via Surat. The restaurant makes excellent sev and methi dishes.

Day 1| Arriving In Mumbai And Exploring Its Cultural Facets

If you are a native of Mumbai, skip this day and start from Day 2.

For everyone else, know that most flights land at this financial powerhouse of the country. While many travellers will want to get on the itinerary as soon as possible, we will suggest you spend some time here, for this city has fantastic things to offer. Gateway To India

A unique landmark in India, Gateway of India, marks India’s chief port. Built during the colonial era, the monument is now a famous photo spot for every traveler in and around the country.

Elephanta Caves

Elephanta Caves is a UNESCO world heritage site that boasts an array of rock-cut cave temples dedicated to Hindu God Shiva. Located on an island in the Sea of Oman close to Mumbai, these 5th to 8th-century caves will prepare the ground for what else is to come your way on this road trip.

Day 2| Mumbai To Ahmedabad

531 KM (Estimate drive time: 9 hours)

Day 2 will be spent mostly on the road, but don’t you worry, you won’t get bored, even if it is for a second. Why? That’s because the charm of seeing the topography, language, and attires change completely as one moves from one state to another will keep you occupied throughout the trip.

In case you started early and reached Ahmedabad on time, spend no time in the hotel. Head out to enjoy the city’s vibrant culture. Else, relax and recharge for what is in store for you the next day!

Day 3| Ahmedabad

A true reflection of Gujarati culture, Ahmedabad is a charmer. Dotted with malls and shopping centers on one side and architectural delights on the other, this city is worth spending a day on. However, if you are under a time constraint, and have Rajasthan prioritized, you can skip exploring the city.

Swaminarayan Temple

If you are early birdy, attend the morning prayer of Swami Narayan Temple. This shrine is a marvelous example of 19th-century structures, a stunning temple with vivid colors and intricate carvings.

Dada Hari Vav

Dada Hari Vav is a 500-year-old step well-marked by labyrinthine carved walls, columns, and pillars. The Stepwell is seven stories and portrays the prowess of Indian artisans in high spirits.

Sabarmati Ashram

Once Mahatma Gandhi and his wife’s residence, this place is undoubtedly one of the city’s biggest tourist attractions. Situated on the serene stretch of the Sabarmati River, the ashram is a living museum of Mahatma Gandhi’s life and showcases his personal belongings.

Day 4| Ahmedabad To Mount Abu

Enjoy the drive from Ahmedabad to Mount Abu on buttery smooth lanes. See the topography dye in the prominent hues of green as you venture into the oasis of Rajasthan.

Once you are there, embrace the Aravalli hills’ lush greenery and bask in the colorful mix of rustic houses and posh bungalows that embellish the landscape.

Day 5| Mount Abu

There is a lot to relish in Mount Abu – from lakes to hilltops and temples to gardens. This oasis of the desert state has a plethora of charms to offer to its visitors. Here are some:

Dilwara Temple

Considered to be among the best specimens of architectural perfection is the 13th-century Dilwara Jain Temple Complex. Carved with perfection out of white marble, the five temples of this complex redefine the meaning of intricacy.

The first-ever man-made lake in India, Nakki Lake, is a tranquillity ticket for every peace-seeker. Go on boating expeditioNs here or climb up to the famous toad rock to catch the panoramic view of the lake.

Mount Abu Sanctuary

Day 6 And 7 | Driving To Udaipur And Exploring The Whimsical Wonderland Of Rajasthan

Today you will commence your journey to the city of love and the supposed “Venice of the East”. Reach the destination in the morning, gorge on some delicious breakfast by the lake, and begin your Udaipur adventure. Jagdish Temple, If there is a place from where you need to start your Udaipur exploration , it has to be this place. Decked in Hinduism’s glory, this temple is famous for its beautifully crafted idols and evening aarti.

City Palace

Udaipur’s pride since 1559, The City Palace is perhaps our favorite of all the Udaipur attractions.

An iconic landmark, constructed FOR 400 years by multiple Mewar rulers; it flaunts a beautiful amalgamation of Mughlai, Rajasthani, European and Chinese architectural styles.

Lake Pichola

For sunset head to Lake Pichola. See the sun drown into the horizon of the lake, watch the skies turn pink and the city light up like a thousand stars.

Bagore Ki Haveli

Pamper your culture-loving heart with “Dharohar” – the evening cultural show of Bagore Ki Haveli. See dancers groove to quintessential Rajasthani melodies and find yourself swaying with joy.

Day 8| A Dreamy Car Ride To Jodhpur Via Ranakpur And Kumbhal Garh

244 km (Estimated drive time: 5 hours)

Spend day 8 traversing the buttery smooth highways of Rajasthan. In the gist of which, explore the two hidden gems of the state. Believe us; nothing will quite prepare you for your encounter with these structural marvels. So, brace yourself!

Ranakpur Jain Temple Complex

Otherwise, famous as one of the potential candidates for the “Wonder of the World list”, Ranakpur temple is far quieter and almost as beautiful as any other structure in the state.

Famous for its 1444 uniquely carved pillars, strolling through its corridors, admiring the intricate craftsmanship and not-so-subtle details in storytelling is what will you do here.

Kumbhalgarh

India’s strongest fort which houses the second longest wall in the country stands out like a beacon on the Udaipur to Jodhpur stretch.

A UNESCO world heritage site, the fort consists of several Hindu and Jain Temples that are revered throughout the state.

Day 9| In And Around The Colorful Streets Of Jodhpur

Spend this day to lose yourself in the blue alleyways of Jodhpur. Go on a walking tour to see the city from its grassroots or behold the beauty of the mighty Mehrangarh Fort. You can also extend your trip at this point to take a village safari to the nearby Bishnoi and Chandelao villages.

Mehrangarh Fort

Perched on a hill, 400 m above the city, Mehrangarh Fort is a stunning example of Rajasthani architecture and grandeur. Being one of the oldest and most magnificent forts in India, this structure is colossal and beautiful.

See the fort museum, enjoy its intricate architecture, and even go zip lining here. We recommend visiting this fort in the late afternoon, to avoid the scorching sun and to catch the sunset over the city.

Bishnoi Village

Day 12| Marvel At The Red City Bikaner

Junagarh Fort

Formerly the primary residence of the kings of Bikaner, Junagarh Fort is among the few Indian Forts that is not perched on a hill. Comprising endless Jali work and red sandstone carvings, all of which are typically ornate, Junagarh Fort makes for one of the most incredible structures in Bikaner.

Lalgarh Palace

Karni Mata Temple

Day 14 And 15: Embrace The Hustle And Bustle Along With The Stunning Structures Of Jaipur

The Labyrinth of the East and the Crown of India are two ways to define the beauty that is Hawa Mahal. Sitting on the edge of the city, Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Wind is famous for its honey-combed 953 windows and intricate latticework.

Day 17 And 18| Follow The Pugmarks At Ranthambore National Park

Day 20| Early Morning Drive To Surat
