Royel Otis: “We’re finding the confidence we needed”

Get to know the Sydney duo carving their own refreshing sound from the heyday of indie greats

Royel Maddell has scruffy, Cobain-esque bangs that complement his croaky, stoner drawl and cover his face anonymously. Otis Pavlovic is as softly spoken as he is fresh-faced. They’re an unlikely pair, but they struck up a connection special enough to immediately form a band.

Royel Otis quickly found an international following for an earnest sound that recalled the greats of late 00s/early 2010 indie, from Phoenix to MGMT, just as music fans seemed to be yearning for that time when things felt a little less serious. Their driving breakout track ‘Oysters in My Pocket’ oozes this feeling with a dancing-in-your-room euphoria, while latest single ‘Adored’ reveals a darker, boisterous side to the Sydney duo.

Ahead of a string of August dates, calling at the likes of London, Nottingham and Glasgow, Royel Otis tell us a little more about their beginnings, finding their sound and their ruling mantra of procrastination.

Royel Otis - Oysters in My Pocket (Official Music Video)

When you were first sending each other demos and ideas, did you have any idea they’d blow up to the extent they have now?

Otis: I was traveling [back then], and I didn’t really know Roy that well, so we were kind of just talking over text. We’d hung out through mutual friends a bunch of times, but never hung out heaps. It wasn’t until we got back and then started hanging out that we got in the room and started liking what we’re doing together.

Royel: Yeah, once you got back we met at The Beachy – The Beach Road Hotel. Then I was like, these are some songs I’ve got…

How quickly did it all start snowballing from there?

Otis: It was probably two or three days after that we were meeting back up again and hanging out.

Royel: Within that month in the studio in Tamarama I think. It’s a blurry time.

Otis: Yeah, it was a month of hanging out and talking and doing some demos at Roy’s place in his little room.

I heard it was the Alessi Brothers’ ‘Seabird’ that kind of sparked your friendship, or at least your musical minds?

Royel: Well, Otis showed me that song, and I’d never heard it before. I can’t find a flaw of that song, start-to-finish. Even the weird outro thing that they throw in in the extended version. It’s just flawless. It’s wild.

Alessi Brothers - Seabird • TopPop

Were there any other songs around that time that inspired you both?

Otis: There was heaps of stuff at the time. The Cure, New Order, that kind of world.

Royel: Frank Ocean’s ‘Nights’ is another song that is just a wildly good start-to-finish song that takes you in different places.

Other than what you both bring musically, what quality or qualities do you value most in each other?

Otis: Just the lightheartedness that Roy can bring, I reckon.

Royel: Otis is a very honest man, and I highly respect him for his honesty and ability to do the most gentlemanly thing.

Well, from gentlemanly behaviour to songs about wanking, tell me a bit more about ‘Adored’…

Royel: [laughs], who told you it was about that?!

I mean, I listened to the lyrics…

Otis: Some people have come to us questioning it, like is it about that ? I’m glad you picked up on it.

Royel: That goes back to the honesty part.

Royel Otis - Adored (Official Music Video)

It was produced by Dan Carey when you were in London – what’s it like coming to the other side of the world and working with guest producers?

Royel: We did a bunch of sessions with a lot of people and then ended up just working with Dan Carey. Everyone was incredible that we worked with, like James Ford, the boys from Hot Chip, they were all great, but I think the Dan Carey session was just much more raucous. It was our sort of vibe at the time. He’s intimidating. He stares right into your soul, he doesn’t blink much. But he’s a good man, so you want to impress him.

Otis: Yeah, he could tell you to get out of his studio at any time.

Do you think trying out different producers has helped sculpt an ideal sound for Royel Otis?

Otis: I think it took a little bit of searching, but yeah, I think we always had an idea. We’ve always said that having a distinct sound was such a good thing to have.

Royel: It makes our world, you know? If you hear something that sounds like us then it is us. Not like, oh that sounds like Tame Impala!

Otis: Yeah, so I think it took a couple of sessions and songs to sort of figure that out, but we’re getting there.

Royel: We’re finding the confidence that we needed, yeah.

It seems a lot the press, at least in the UK, seems to be feeding into a general feeling of nostalgia at the moment. How do you how do you feel about all the ‘indie sleaze’ comparisons?

Royel: I think it’s cool. I wouldn’t like to be referenced to the gigantic rock era. I don’t know…

Otis: If we’re gonna get referred to any era then that’s the best one.

Royel: Exactly, and indie is just short for independent. God, I’m far from independent, but I think, you know, that’s cool.

royel otis tour uk

On your breakout song, ‘Oysters In My Pocket’, there’s a line: “We just haven’t learned much/ Oh well, that’s miles away”. Is that still your attitude towards the project and life in general right now?

Royel: Yeah, just having patience. Nothing happens fast. You know, nothing’s just a handout that comes to you. And also, there were a couple of things that were going on in our lives that felt miles away, sort of. Like, f*ck, we’ve got to pay rent, we got to figure out what we’re doing while everyone else has these steady jobs with constant pay. Just being like, you know, even if it’s tomorrow, or even if it’s this afternoon, it’s miles away.

Sofa King’s singles “Kool Aid” , “Sofa King” , “Going Kokomo” and “I Wanna Dance With You” were quick to receive international and local press adoration from Paper Mag , Purple Sneakers , NME , consistent airplay from BBC Radio 1 , Apple Music 1 and the status of Triple J ’s #1 Most Played track. Produced by Chris Collins and Royel Otis, the EP delivered visceral stories and quick wit atop blissful guitar-fuzzed haze, landing in major playlists such as Ultimate Indie , All New Indie , DOPAMINE, and Today’s Indie Rock (including featuring on the cover). The record followed the band’s sophomore EP Bar ‘N Grill in 2022, which saw the pair grace the covers of global playlists including Indie Arrivals and Supersound , Apple Music’s Heaps Indie and more, amassing over 10 million streams , and garnered widespread playlisting support across Australian community radio, US college radio and BBC Radio 6 . Meanwhile, earlier this year, they joined Groovin the Moo’s 2023 touring lineup and as supports on alt-j's Australian tour.

They are ready to end 2023 in sizzling style, as they sling “ Fried Rice” ahead of their debut album, PRATTS & PAIN , arriving early next year.

Royel Otis: Australia’s next breakout indie heroes

A cover of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ has sent the band viral in recent weeks. But, as their thrilling debut ‘Pratts & Pain’ proves, they’ve never been in danger of killing the groove

I f Triple J asked you to do Like A Version , what song would you cover? It’s a question that finds its way into conversation at least once in every Australian teen’s hangouts, confirmed to NME on good authority by Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic, the duo that make up Royel Otis . In January 2024, that scenario came to the band – who operate somewhere between indie , pop and psychedelic rock – when they had their shot at the radio station’s coveted weekly cover slot.

Royel Otis on The Cover of NME, photo by Danny Draxx

Their answer? The song of the moment: Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’, which is enjoying a second wind thanks to its masterful inclusion in 2023’s Barry Keoghan-starring Saltburn , soundtracking the film’s jaw-dropping, NSFW climax. With flamboyant synths and Pavlovic’s compelling vocal delivery, their playful take on the track took off on social media, dominating TikTok feeds and even catching the eye of Ellis-Bextor herself . Since being added to streaming services, it’s already gained a whopping 7million plays on Spotify , surpassing the majority of the band’s releases to date.

“‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ definitely wasn’t on my mind,” says Pavlovic with a wry smile, reflecting on Julia Jacklin’s 2015 cover of The Strokes’ ‘Someday’ as his favourite Like A Version growing up. Pieced together one hour during rehearsals the day before, the duo explain how the track felt “more off the cuff” than any of the other contenders on the list, which were all in the realms of “2000s disco and dance”, according to Maddell. The decision proved to be a stroke of genius.

Royel Maddell of Royel Otis (2024), photo by Danny Draxx

Whether it be the DMA’S reimagination of Cher’s ‘Believe’ or Denzel Curry’s monstrous take on Rage Against The Machine’s ‘Bulls On Parade’ , history has shown how Like A Version can move mountains for an emerging artist. A month down the line, YouTube view counts continue to skyrocket for Royel Otis, having already surpassed 2million; their TikTok now boasts over 10million views. And the timing could not be sweeter, as their debut album ‘Pratts & Pain’ is finally unveiled to the world.

Following three EPs and packed out festival appearances at Reading & Leeds , End Of The Road and Australia’s Splendour In The Grass, things are moving at a brisk pace for the duo, who met as childhood friends in Sydney. Speaking to NME over an extremely early morning Zoom call from Syracuse, New York, the band have sacrificed a chunk of their Australian summer for a brief run of US press duties. “It’s crazy how every state has a completely different vibe,” says Maddell of their first stateside visit. “I liked it in LA. It’s spread out, it’s got that Sydney vibe to it,” Pavlovic continues. “But New York? It’s nothing but skyscrapers.”

Though this might be their first taste of the US, it’s London that has become an adopted second home for the band, who recorded ‘Pratts & Pain’ with super-producer Dan Carey over the course of three weeks in his Streatham studio. After “speed-dating” various A-list producers that included Hot Chip , James Ford [ Arctic Monkeys ] and Rich Turvey [ Courteeners , Blossoms ] it was a deliberate choice from the band to enlist Carey. Despite predominantly working with British and Irish artists (including Fontaines D.C. , Wet Leg and Squid ), Royel Otis are not the first Australians he’s encountered.

Otis Pavlovic of Royel Otis (2024), photo by Danny Draxx

“For starters, he wrote ‘Slow’ by Kylie Minogue ,” exclaims Maddell of the 2003 single that reached Number One in the UK and Australia. “That, to me, is fucking incredible. But Fontaines and Wet Leg – Australians really love both those bands.” Carey’s magic touch adds a murkier element to ‘Pratts & Pain’, departing ever so slightly from their sun-kissed early sound that was produced primarily by “Triple J sweetheart” Chris Collins, as Maddell explains. “With Chris, everything sounds sunny and beachy, especially because of where he lives in Byron Bay. Whereas with Dan, you feel like you can hear the south London part of it.”

The album’s penultimate track ‘Always Always’ is perhaps the clearest example of this, conveying feelings of longing over its melancholic chord progression. Unsettling noise-rock creeps into ‘Sonic Blue’, juxtaposed against the upbeat grooves of ‘Adored’ and the gang vocal crash course that is ‘Velvet’. It’s barely a surprise that lyrics like ‘Fried Rice’’s “ Make me a mop to clean up the scene /The pump is gonna work with the bang gang team ” were often written at the nearby pub from which the album takes its name, The Pratts and Payne.

“Sadly it’s closed down now, which is heartbreaking,” says Maddell. “Pretty much after every session, we would go there and do a lot of lyric writing… between games of Trivial Pursuit !” Whilst the band’s creative process took place in this Streatham microcosm, Pavlovic explains how they spent plenty of evenings further afield in the capital, with a mixture of their own friends and Carey’s. “We were staying in Hackney for quite a bit, and we spent a lot of time at The Toucan in Soho. There’s good Guinness at The Toucan…”

“Tame Impala are amazing… but we don’t want to be compared to them!” – Royel Maddell

The uber-intensive approach is well and truly the way of working for Royel Otis, who are done with any virtual writing process that involves back-and-forth online calls. “We used to live 20 minutes away from each other, so it’s changed a little bit,”, says Pavlovic. “I don’t think it was until [2022 EP] ‘Bar & Grill’ that we found our sound… trading ideas and mashing them together,” adds Maddell. “Now we wait till we get in the studio. When something’s sent to you digitally, you forget about it.”

Nevertheless, Carey’s “intimidating” home studio was a step up from anything Royel Otis had come across before, mediated by his ever-present dog, Poppy. Struck by the Doctor Who -esque wall of synths and blinking lights that overlooked the studio, Maddell and Pavlovic watched in awe as Carey worked his magic on their album, like something of a “mad scientist.” The special chemistry that they unlocked through pub trips realised its full potential through the studio experience, initial overwhelm turning to fluid songwriting as ‘Pratts & Pain’ came to life.

Royel Otis (2024), photo by Danny Draxx

S peaking to NME in early 2023 , the band expressed that their Australian contemporaries had struggled to break out of greater Sydney’s guitar music scene, which Maddell and Pavlovic were privy to, hanging out at gigs and bars all over Byron Bay. It was Maddell’s retreat to New York and Pavlovic’s travels around Europe that catalysed their first musical interactions. Taking a step back, it appears, was the key to unlocking the magic they would then create in Sydney, first gaining notoriety through their early EPs.

Recalling the likes of MGMT and Passion Pit through early singles ‘Only One’ and ‘Without U’, it was their 2022 single ‘Oysters In My Pocket’ that first exposed Royel Otis to a global audience. Taking the pace up just a notch, the vigour of this sound perhaps ignited the rawness of ‘Pratts & Pain’. Coupled with the soaring synths and nostalgia of their early material, they’ve been able to find a place as both indie-pop darlings and cutting-edge rockers, not too distant from the likes of Wallows and Foals .

“Genesis Owusu is a real gentleman. He’s really championed us from the start” – Otis Pavlovic

“We kind of skipped Sydney… our first tour was over in London,” recalls Pavlovic, explaining how the mere prospect of seeing the world was a no-brainer. “In the UK and Europe, you guys have such a nice passion for going to see live music,” says Maddell. “A lot of people – of all ages – don’t even know our band, and they turn up to the show. Whereas in Australia, that doesn’t really happen. In Sydney, you’ve got to know the band before you see them.”

While Tame Impala have reached seismic heights in their native Australia – with bands like Spacey Jane and The Jungle Giants not far behind – Royel Otis have done things their own way, as they prepare for a sold out tour down under, including three nights at Melbourne’s Cornel Hotel and two at Sydney’s Liberty Hall. “There’s probably an Australian indie sound. I feel like we’re not completely in it,” Pavlovic says nonchalantly, while Maddell describes the challenge for any new Australian band in 2024: “Even though they are amazing… all we want to do is try to not be compared to Tame Impala!”

Royel Otis (2024), photo by Danny Draxx

Forging out his own path to a similar degree of success is former NME Cover star Genesis Owusu , who joins Royel Otis as the only other artist signed to Sydney-based label Ourness. “He’s a real gentleman,” Pavlovic says, a sentiment echoed by Maddell. “Even before we released stuff, we had lunch with him and he’s really championed us from the start. Getting in the studio with him as well, that’s been talked about a lot… I think our schedules clash too much!”

As the ‘Pratts & Pain’ era begins, this jam-packed schedule will only get busier for Royel Otis, who will return to UK festival stages this summer following a headline tour of North America. While Pavlovic turns to video games to zone out, Maddell is a sucker for a film on the long plane journeys which are becoming all the more regular with touring life. He recalls the unexpectedly emotional experience of the Mark Rylance-starring comedy golf caper The Phantom of the Open , which sent him into tears five times.

Whilst Maddell is most certainly the film nerd of the two, the pair have both watched Saltburn , with Pavlovic praising how “beautifully” it was shot. In time, their ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ cover will surely come to be merely one flicker of success in a long and illustrious career, as ‘Pratts & Pain’ confirms their status as a key voice capable of propelling guitar music into the future.

Australian indie duo Royel Otis have captivated millions of listeners globally since forming in 2019, having slowly and carefully morphed their sound into new shapes across their first three EPs Campus (2021), Bar & Grill and Sofa Kings (each 2022). With the 2024-release of their debut album Pratts & Pain, the pair swing between melodic, pop-inspired indie and woozy psych while never feeling tied to one lane - a technique that’s attracted fan status from Zane Lowe, BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders and Matt Wilkinson. The record landed at #1 on the ARIA Australian Albums Chart and #10 on the ARIA Albums Chart, was awarded a coveted triple j Feature Album and garnered worldwide critical acclaim. Pratts & Pain received 4 star reviews from UK tastemakers Dork, Clash and NME (and graced the NME cover at home and in the UK), and saw the pair reach #1 Most Played Artist at US college radio across music specialty shows.

Amassing over 140 million streams to date, Royel Otis have also covered global playlists on Spotify and Apple Music, sold out a 15-date headline tour of Australia, and embarked on debut headline tours of the UK, Europe and soon to come, US. Most recently, their triple j Like A Version recording of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder On The Dancefloor” became a viral TikTok sensation globally, already cracking the US Billboard Alternative Airplay Chart at #17, The Mediabase Chart at #16 and reaching #2 on ARIA’s Top 20 Australian Singles. Receiving a nod from Sophie herself, it remains in single and streaming charts across Australia, Europe, the US and UK.

Royel Otis have no issue keeping all who listen on their toes. After the release of two EPs that took the band on a fast-track ride to global notoriety, PRATTS & PAIN has landed to propel Pavlovic and Maddell through their next chapter, adventures abound with no limits.

Breaking News

Things to do | police release more details in route 183 head-on crash in berks, things to do, things to do | regional concert previews of nation of language, kansas, ty segall, more [seven in seven].

Nation of Language plays a co-bill with Beach Fossils on Friday at XL Live in Harrisburg. (Courtesy of Shervin Lainez)

Welcome to Seven in Seven, where we look at shows coming to the region over the next week. As always, whether your musical tastes are rock ’n’ roll, jazz, heavy metal, R&B, singer-songwriter or indie, there will always be something to check out.

Here are seven of the best on the docket for the week of April 26:

Beach Fossils + Nation of Language — Friday at XL Live

A fantastic double bill comes to Harrisburg this week with indie rockers Beach Fossils and purveyors of synth pop Nation of Language. Both acts are from Brooklyn, and each is supporting a new album, with Beach Fossils supporting last June’s “Bunny” while Nation of Language dropped “Stange Disciple” in September to widespread critical acclaim. Be sure not to sleep on the latter as it explores themes of hopeless devotion, toxic infatuation, outrage-baiting news cycles, the battle of agony vs. ecstasy and more, which promises to be delivered brilliantly live.

Meatbodies — Friday at PhilaMOCA

Los Angeles psych-rock outfit Meatbodies’ latest undertaking, and borderline lost album, “Flora Ocean Tiger Bloom,” is their most realized work to date. The LP details how frontman Chad Ubovich faced the trials of sobriety, redemption and reinvention, all while literally learning to walk and play again as he battled a life-threatening health crisis that put him in a hospital bed for a month. Resurrection not only accompanies the record but also planted the seed for Ubovich to get back onstage with a vengeance.

Kansas brings its 50th anniversary tour to American Music Theatre, Lancaster, on Saturday. (Courtesy of Chipster PR)

Kansas — Saturday at American Music Theatre

Due to overwhelming popularity, the Kansas 50th anniversary celebration, dubbed the “Another Fork in the Road” tour, has been extended, with this Lancaster date one of the additions. The shows will see the band’s illustrious music history commemorated over two full hours of memorable hits, fan favorites and deep cuts rarely performed live. The tour has already been hallmarked by energetic and spellbinding performances across the U.S. and into Canada, further cementing the legacy of a group known for monster hits like “Carry on Wayward Son” and “Dust in the Wind.”

Ty Segall — Sunday at Union Transfer

Back in January, Ty Segall returned with his most ambitious, elastic set of songs to date on his 15th album, “Three Bells.” The record ended up an obsessive quest for expression, with much of it being played by the singer-songwriter in conversation with himself, a decision that further elevates the album’s conception. All 15 songs brim with perspectives, shapeshifting incessantly as Segall pushed them out farther and farther compositionally, challenging the way they’d be played. The new challenge then will be how he reveals them in a live setting, which can be found out this Sunday at Union Transfer.

Kamelot — Tuesday at H-MAC

Kamelot’s most recent release, “The Awakening,” debuted at No. 2 on the U.S. Current Hard Music Albums chart and No. 27 on the Current Album Sales chart, leaving little doubt how much it connected with fans. The album entered the band’s legacy as their most massive and diverse offering yet, mixing symphonic, gothic, melodic, progressive and power metal styles while yielding some of the heaviest tracks in the Florida unit’s history. Their intense brand of ultramodern gothic and symphonic theatricality is amplified further and with more emotionality — elements critical to their concerts.

Alan Doyle — Tuesday at Sellersville Theater 1894

Alan Doyle has made the road his home for many decades, beginning as lead singer and songwriter for the multi-platinum selling Newfoundland band Great Big Sea. Live, he combines the musical traditions of his native land in folk, Irish and seafaring tunes with modern pop and the Americana of his more recent solo albums. Back in 2018, he was awarded the Order of Canada for his contributions to the musical traditions of Newfoundland and for his commitment to numerous charitable initiatives. His resume is extensive as a thrice-published author, a film and TV actor-producer with multiple major credits, and the co-producer of the recently released, 20-song Ron Hynes tribute album, “Sonny Don’t Go Away.” Yet he remains most electrifying before a live audience, abetted by his ace band.

Royel Otis — Thursday, May 2, at Johnny Brenda’s

After forming in 2019 and slowly drip-feeding music into the world during the pandemic, Australian duo Royel Otis garnered fans in BBC Radio 6 Music, triple j and on U.S. college radio. To date, they have amassed over 35 million streams, covered global playlists on Spotify and Apple Music and headed out on a debut headline tour of the UK and Europe. Now they’re touching down stateside for the first time, swinging between melodic, pop-inspired indie and woozy psych, never tied to one lane. As soon as one style or mood has outstayed its welcome, they handbrake turn into psychedelic weirdness or dissonant noise, keeping audiences on their toes.

• Beach Fossils: “Don’t Fade Away”

• Nation of Language: “Sole Obsession”

• Meatbodies: “Move”

• Kansas: “Carry on Wayward Son”

• Ty Segall: “My Room”

• Kamelot: “One More Flag in the Ground”

• Alan Doyle: “Dancing Like We Did Last Night”

• Royel Otis: “Sofa King”
