Troubleshooting Discord Not Working on Safari

Discord is a popular communication platform used by gamers and other communities. It provides a great way for users to stay connected and chat with each other, but unfortunately, it is not compatible with Safari browsers. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to try and make Discord work with Safari.

The first thing you should try is restarting your computer. This can help if thre are any software conflicts causing the issue. Additionally, you may want to uninstall Discord and then reinstall it, as this can also help fix the issue.

If that doesn’t work, anothr option is to use another web browser like Google Chrome or Firefox instead of Safari when using Discord. To do this, tap on your profile picture in the bottom-right corner of the screen to open the User Settings tab. Then scroll down and tap on Web Browser under the App Settings section. Finally, select which browser you want to use when opening links in Discord.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to download the app but still want access to Discord from your browser, you can use our web client instead of downloading the app itself. To do this simply visit our website and follow the steps provided there for accessing our web client version of Discord from your browser.

We hope these tips were able to help you get Discord working on Safari! If none of these solutions fixed your issue or if you have any further questions or concerns about uing Discord with Safari please don’t hesitate to contact us for more assistance!

Troubleshooting Discord Not Working on Safari 1

Compatibility of Safari with Discord

No, unfortunately Discord is not compatible with Safari. Discord uses web technologies that are not supported by Safari, so the app will not work correctly if you try to use it on Safari. We recommend using Chrome, Firefox, or Edge for the best experience.

Unable to Open Discord on Safari

Discord is not officially supported on Safari, so it’s possible that there may be compatibility issues when attempting to use the application. You can try using Discord in another web browser such as Google Chrome, as it is more likely to work properly. To ensure the best experience, we recommend downloading the Discord app from their website and running it directly from your computer.

Using Discord Without the App

To access Discord witout the app, you can use our web client. Simply open your favorite browser and visit https://discordapp.com/login to log into your account. Once logged in, you’ll be able to join and participate in voice chats, send messages in text channels, and manage your profile and settings from our web interface. You can also use the web client to access Discord on mobile devices and tablets.

Is There a Web Version of Discord Available?

Yes, there is a web version of Discord. It functions in the same way as the desktop app, exept that it runs inside your browser. The web version allows you to join servers, join and create text and voice channels, send messages and files, search for other users, and more. Additionally, with the web version you can stay connected from anywhere you have an internet connection.

Browser Incompatibility with Discord

Discord may not work in your browser if you are using an outdated version of Chrome, or if it’s conflicting with other extensions or software. Additionally, if there is an issue with the server itself, it coud be causing the browser to not support Discord. To make sure that everything is working correctly, try restarting your browser, making sure that all of your extensions are up-to-date and disabling any conflicting software. If this doesn’t help, contact Discord customer service for further assistance.

Forcing Discord to Open in a Browser

To force Discord to open in a browser, you’ll need to first open your web browser. Then, navigate to the website https://discord.com and log in with your credentials. Once logged in, you should be able to access the Discord platform through your web browser. Alternatively, if you have an existing desktop version of Discord installed on your computer you can use this as well by clicking the ‘Open In Browser’ option from the File menu.

Logging Into Discord On Phone Without App

Yes, you can log into Discord on your phone witout an app. To do this, open your browser and head to https://discord.com/login. Enter your email address, username, or phone number and password to log in. You will then be able to use Discord on your mobile device without downloading the app. Keep in mind that the mobile version of Discord may not have all the same features as the desktop and app versions.

In conclusion, Discord is not officially compatible with Safari, but it may be possible to use it on the web browser depending on your computer’s settings and the version of Safari you are running. If you choose to use the Discord app instead of the web client, you should try restarting your computer and uninstalling/reinstalling Discord before attempting to use it in Safari. Finally, if you do decide to use Discord in a web browser, make sure to change your settings so that Discord will open links in the browser of your choice.

Guys, please help me fix this issue.

This has been bugging me for longer 6 months, and I still can’t log on to Discord. The loading screen just has the logo, and won’t stop loading, and I can’t even access Discord from the website. Every time I type discord.com in the search, it pops up as, “Safari couldn’t establish a secure connection to the server”. I tried to login from another device, but the same problem occurred. My sister was able to login from my account with ease, so why can’t I? Or is it that I’m supposed to only use the website? Please help me solve this issue.

A little hard to advise and help you when you provide NO information about your iPad.

Here are my questions to you.

What year and model iPad do you have/own?

The “A” model number can be found on the aluminium back of your iPad, in small print, right under the larger bold print “iPad”.

What iOS/iPadOS version is this iPad, currently, running?

What is the rated, internal data storage space/capacity of your iPad model and how much of this free, internal data storage capacity is left inside of your iPad model?

All of that additional info can be found in the Settings app, General settings panel, About.

Please attempt to answer all questions asked.

Jun 23, 2021 9:45 AM in response to MichelPM

My iPad is an iPad Air, 4th generation. It is currently running on iOS version 14.6 and the amount of storage in the iPad is 64GB. The amount of available storage left is 14GB. I tried to do this on a different iPad, but it still doesn’t work. I can’t recall it’s model, storage, etc., but hopefully this answers all your questions.

Jun 23, 2021 11:05 AM in response to Big_Mo101

I am going to guess and STRONGLY suspect that your new 2020, 64 GBs iPad Air 4 is FULL or close to full of data.

A 64 GBs storage iPad starts out with approx. 60 GBs.,after initial internal flash drive formatting.

Minus approx. 6.5 GBs for iOS/iPadOS leaves between 53-54 GBs.

Minus 3-6 GBs, for iOS/iPadOS system operational reserve, that MUST BE MAINTAINED AT ALL TIMES , to ensure/insure normal, expected operation of iOS/iPad OS, leaves approx. between 48-50 GBs of actual, usable data storage space.

This maybe part of your iPad issues.

You may need to free up free data storage space on an iPad.

You need to start by backing up your iPad to either Apple's iCloud ( you may need to pay for additional, monthly storage space ) or by connecting your iDevice to a computer running the latest iTunes or, if a newer Mac with a much newer macOS, use the macOS Finder to do the device backup and/or some other offsite, “cloud” data storage/backup services, like Google Drive/Photos, BOX, DropBox, Amazon Cloud Drive, Flickr ( for photos/images ), etc.

Then, delete any installed apps that you no longer use or use infrequently enough that they aren't missed (you can always reinstalled any purchased or free apps at some time later, as you need them).

In addition, uninstall any games that appear to be using a sizable chunk of your iPad's internal storage, as well!

Then, thin out/delete any music/videos/movies/TV shows/podcasts/screen recordings/photos-images/eBooks/eMagazine/iBooks/audio books/Documents/PDFs, etc.

If you use a POP email account on your iPad, delete/thin out any old saved emails that maybe saved to your iPad.

To permanently delete photos/images off of your iDevice go into the Photos app and find the Recently Deleted folder/album and permanently delete any photos/images stored in that folder/album.

Also, you can check to see what other stuff is eating up all your valuable data storage space by going into the Settings App,,General Settings Panel, in the right hand column, tap Storage & iCloud usage panel ( in iOS 11 and later, it’s now called iPad Storage ), in the top Storage Panel, tap the Manage Storage panel, wait for a list of apps to generate that will tell you how much space each app is taking up on your iDevice.

For much newer, larger screen iPad models, without a Home button, try the new hard reset procedure for the new 2018/2020 iPad Pro and iPad Air 4 models.

1. Press and Release the Volume Up button.

2. Then immediately Press and Release the Volume Down button.

3. Then, Press and Hold the Power Button at the top. You will see the Slide to Power off button, but keep on holding down the Power Button until you see the Apple logo, then let it go.

Once you have performed all the steps, wait for a few seconds and your 2018 iPad Pro will boot up completely to the iPad Pro’s Lock screen.

iOS devices and iOS/iPadOS need to maintain, at the very least, a minimum of between 3-6 GBs of free data storage space, AT ALL TIMES, to insure normal/nominal functionalities/operation and general overall performance of any iOS device running iOS/iPadOS.

Jun 23, 2021 11:04 AM in response to Big_Mo101

Once your iPad internal storage issues are solved, if the current Safari Web browser is stillcausing issues OR the Discord app is still causing issues.

Try deleting the Discord app from your iPad and re-install it and try logging into the app, again.

For Safari, you may have either have to quit the app in the iOS/iPadOS app switcher and relaunch Safari.

Then try logging into the Discord Website again.

For much newer, larger screen iPad models, without a Home button, try the new hard reset procedure for the new 2018/2020/2021 iPad Pros and the 2020 iPad Air 4 models, again.

If STILL no joy, try downloading another third party Web browser, from the iOS App Store, like either Mozilla Firefox for iOS/iPadOS or Google Chrome browser for iOS/iPadOS and try accessing your problem Websites from another third party Web browser, instead.

Best of Luck to You!

How to Fix It When Discord Won't Open

Troubleshooting Discord not opening

  • Texting & Messaging
  • Video Calls

When Discord won't open, you lose all of the functionality provided by the desktop and mobile apps, like the system-wide push to talk, so it's important to get it up and running again as fast as possible.

What Causes Discord to Not Open?

The most common issue that prevents Discord from launching is that it never shut down all the way in the first place. When you close Discord, it sometimes leaves a remnant process running in the background. That keeps the app from opening again until you kill the process.

Other issues can also prevent Discord from opening, like internet connectivity issues, a virtual private network (VPN) and proxy incompatibility, incorrect system settings, and even corrupt data in your temporary files or the Discord app itself.

How to Fix It When Discord Won’t Open

If you're having trouble opening Discord, follow these steps in order to get it working again.

Force quit the Discord task . When you close an app like Discord, it's possible for parts of the app to continue running in the background. You won't see Discord on the taskbar or in the system tray, but a remnant of it may still be running. When that happens, it's impossible to open a fresh copy of Discord without first getting rid of the remnant.

From the Windows task manager, look for any instances of Discord , select them, and then click End Task .

If you're using Discord on macOS, you can use Force Quit to get rid of a malfunctioning instance of Discord. You can also kill the Android app if you're having trouble with Discord on Android. For Discord problems on Android and iOS, restarting the device may also help.

Delete temporary files . Corrupt temporary files can prevent the Discord app from opening and functioning normally. To fix this problem, you'll need to delete all of the files in your AppData and LocalAppData folders.

Try the web version of Discord. To log in from a browser, go to https://discord.com/ and select Open Discord in your browser or go here and log in: https://discord.com/channels/@me. If the web client works just fine, then there probably isn't an issue with your internet connection. In that case, it's more likely that there is a problem with the Discord app on your computer. If the web client doesn't work, however, you probably have an internet issue.

Disable your VPN or proxy. If you're using a VPN or connecting to the internet through a proxy, that can prevent Discord from working. To rule this out, disconnect from your VPN or disable your proxy, reestablish your normal internet connection, and then check to see if Discord works. If it does, try switching the VPN server you connect to, or try different proxies.

To disable or disconnect from a VPN, use your VPN app.

To disable proxies on a Windows computer, go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Internet Options . Select the Connections tab, and click LAN Settings . If the box next to Use a proxy server for your LAN is selected, deselect it. Click OK and then Apply .

Flush your DNS . If you are recovering from an internet connectivity problem, or you have just shut off your VPN or disconnected from a proxy, then you may need to flush your DNS to see results.

Fix your date and time settings . If you have manually set the date and time of your computer, and your settings aren't accurate, that can prevent Discord form working correctly. Instead of setting things manually, set your Date and Time to automatic. After you have done so, restart your computer before attempting to open Discord.

Scan your computer for malware . Malware can be designed to prevent certain apps and utilities from launching, and it can also prevent apps from running as an unintended byproduct or by using too many system resources. Using a high quality anti-virus or anti-malware app , scan your computer for infections, and fix anything that you find.

Check for Windows updates . In some cases, running an outdated version of windows can cause unexpected app behavior. If that's the source of your problem, then downloading and installing any available system updates will fix the problem.

If you're having trouble opening Discord on a Mac, make sure to check for any available macOS updates .

Check for Discord updates. If you can see the icon for Discord in the notification area by the clock, but it won't open, right-click it and choose Check for Updates to see if that works first. It's much faster than going to the site and downloading the latest version. But if that doesn't work, then visiting the download page is the next best option.

Uninstall Discord and perform a fresh install. If nothing else works, then you will need to uninstall the app , download the latest Discord installer, and reinstall it. If your problem was caused by corrupt data in the Discord app, this will get things working again.

What If Discord Still Won’t Open?

Since the Discord app is essentially just a wrapper for the web client, any disruptions in the web service can prevent the app from opening. That means there may be an issue on Discord's end that you will have to wait for them to iron out, or you could have an internet connectivity issue. In that event, you should check if Discord is down for everyone , or if it's just you.

Unsupported Browser Discord: How to Solve Compatibility Issues

Unsupported Browser

Understanding Unsupported Browsers

When someone runs into an “ unsupported browser ” message on Discord, it’s usually because the web browser doesn’t meet the needed technical requirements. Each browser, like Chrome, Firefox, or Edge, has a unique way of showing web pages, known as a rendering engine. Discord, like other web applications, is crafted to work best with specific browsers.

Common reasons for browser incompatibility:

  • Outdated browser version: Discord might not work if the browser isn’t updated to the latest version.
  • Different rendering engine: Some browsers operate on engines that are not in sync with Discord’s technology.

Popular browsers supported by Discord:

  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Edge

What stands out about these browsers?

  • They’re built on robust platforms like Chromium (for Chrome and Edge).
  • They receive regular updates, which helps with maintaining compatibility.

If Discord indicates an unsupported browser error, checking for updates or switching to a compatible browser often solves the issue. The key is using a browser that aligns with Discord’s technical standards. Remember, an updated browser not only ensures smoother voice and video chats on Discord but protects against security vulnerabilities.

Resolving Compatibility Issues

When using Discord, ensuring that your web browser is up to date or switching to a compatible one can often rectify any compatibility problems you are encountering.

Updating Your Browser

Keep your web experience smooth by regularly updating your browser. For Discord users, this means ensuring that browsers like Chrome, Firefox, or Edge are running on their latest versions. Here’s how to update them:

  • Chrome: Open the browser, click on the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner, go to “Help,” and select “About Google Chrome.” Chrome will automatically check for updates.
  • Firefox: Click the menu button, go to “Help,” and select “About Firefox.” If updates are available, Firefox will download them automatically.
  • Edge: Click on the three-dot menu, navigate to “Help and feedback,” then “About Microsoft Edge .” Edge will then search for any available updates.

Switching to a Supported Browser

Not all browsers play nice with Discord. If compatibility issues persist, consider switching to a widely supported browser:

These browsers are known to work well with web-based applications like Discord.

Using Discord on Different Platforms

Discord is versatile and runs on various platforms. If your browser is giving you trouble, try these alternatives:

  • Discord App: Available for Windows 7, Windows 11, and other operating systems, the desktop app can provide a more stable experience.
  • Mobile App: Use Discord on the go with the mobile app for iOS and Android, bypassing browser issues altogether.

Besides keeping browsers up to date and trying different ones, users might also solve some issues by changing their DNS settings to a service like Google DNS, as this sometimes improves connectivity and performance with online services.

Optimizing Discord on Supported Browsers

Using Discord efficiently relies on the performance of the browser. Whether you’re using Chrome, Firefox, or Edge, understanding how to optimize your browser can lead to a smoother Discord experience.

Enhancing Browser Performance

To improve your browser’s performance, start by clearing cache and cookies regularly. This helps the browser run faster by removing old data that can slow it down. Additionally, check for and install any updates for your browser to ensure you have the latest features and security improvements.

  • Chrome : Access settings from the menu, go to “Privacy and security,” and select “Clear browsing data.”
  • Firefox : Click the hamburger menu, choose “Options,” then “Privacy & Security,” and then “Clear Data” under “Cookies and Site Data.”
  • Edge : Click the three dots in the upper right, select “Settings,” click “Privacy, search, and services,” and under “Clear browsing data,” choose “Choose what to clear.”

Another pro tip is to adjust your DNS settings for quicker website lookups. Consider using public DNS servers that are known for their speed, like Google’s 8.8.8.8 or Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1.

Managing Browser Extensions

Browser extensions can greatly enhance your Discord usage but can also be a source of issues if not managed properly. Too many extensions can slow down your browser, so it’s important to:

  • Keep extensions up to date to avoid security risks and performance issues.

For Chrome:

  • Go to “Extensions” by clicking on the menu and then “More Tools.”
  • Use the “Update” button to refresh all your installed extensions.

For Firefox:

  • Open the menu, go to “Add-ons,” and click on “Extensions.”
  • Check for updates in the “Gear” icon menu.

Select “Extensions” from the menu.

Look for the “Manage extensions” option to update installed add-ons.

Remove unnecessary extensions that you don’t use. This will lighten the load on your browser’s resources. Just go to the extensions page in your browser and look for options to disable or remove the ones you don’t need.

Following these specific steps can help ensure that Discord and your browser run together as smoothly as possible, enhancing your overall experience.

How to Fix the “Safari Can’t Establish a Secure Connection to the Server” Error (6 Solutions)

When you’re browsing the web, the last thing you want is to run into an error message. If you’re a macOS user, one of the issues you might come across is: “Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server” error.

While it may seem intimidating at first, this is a relatively common problem with a few simple solutions. All it usually takes is a little bit of troubleshooting before you’re able to effectively (and safely) access the site.

This post will explain what this Safari error message is and some of its common causes. Then we’ll provide you with six easy ways to fix the problem.

Let’s get started!

What’s the “Safari Can’t Establish a Secure Connection to the Server” Error?

Some of the best features of Mac devices are their built-in security settings . Apple has created an experience designed to keep you and your device safe, especially while browsing the web.

This is why its native browser, Safari, will sometimes prevent you from accessing a website that it doesn’t deem as secure. When this happens, you’ll likely see an error message that says, “Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server.”

A screenshot of the “Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server” error.

The specific wording of the error may vary. For example, as you can see in the image above, you might also come across a notification letting you know that “Safari Can’t Open the Page.”

In a nutshell, this error message means that the browser doesn’t trust the encrypted data on the site. Alternatively, Safari could not access and verify the information successfully. For example, this might happen when a site doesn’t have a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate  properly configured.

Using SSL and Secure Shell Access (SSH)  is critical for websites today. This is especially true when you have a site that handles sensitive customer data, such as a WooCommerce store .

However, if you know the site that you’re accessing is secure, the problem is likely with Safari. Many people experience this error message when accessing popular websites, such as Facebook, YouTube, and Google.

What Causes “Safari Can’t Establish a Secure Connection to the Server” Error?

There are many different reasons you might be seeing this error message. As we mentioned, the main explanation is that Safari can’t verify that the website you’re trying to access is secure enough to protect your data.

However, it’s essential to understand  why it deems the site unsecured to know how to resolve it. Sometimes, you may not know what the culprit is until you try troubleshooting it.

With that said, there are a handful of common causes behind the “Safari can’t establish a secure connection” message. For example, the issue may be attributed to a third-party extension or add-on you have installed on your browser. It could be something as simple as having outdated cache data. However, it could be a more complicated problem, such as the Internet Protocol (IP) version you’re using.

How To Fix the “Safari Can’t Establish a Secure Connection to the Server” Error (6 Solutions)

Now that we understand more about the issue and its potential causes, it’s time to look at how to fix it. Below are six solutions you can use to resolve the “Safari can’t establish a secure connection” error.

1. Clear Your Browser Data

When you visit websites, Safari will store some of the information in the browser cache and cookies. If this data includes outdated details relating to the site’s SSL or encryption , it can be the reason you see the error message.

Therefore, one of the quickest and simplest methods you can use to resolve this error is to clear your browser cache . To do that in Safari, you can start by opening up the browser.

Next, click on Preferences  > Privacy , then select Remove All Website Data .

Clearing the browser cache in Safari.

After it finishes loading (it may take a minute or two), you can decide which websites to clear the data from. For example, you can select them all or simply the one you’re having trouble accessing.

When done, click on the Done  button at the bottom of the screen.

Next, to clear your entire browsing history, you can navigate to  Safari  > History  > Clear History .

Clearing your entire browsing history in Safari.

When finished, try revisiting the site that was showing the error message. If it’s still there, you can move on to the next solution.

2. Check Your Device’s Date and Time

While it may seem odd, sometimes having the incorrect date and time on your Mac device can cause some issues within Safari. Therefore, it’s essential to ensure that yours is set to the correct time zone and date.

To get started, you can click on the Apple icon, then navigate to System Preferences  > Date & Time .

Find the date and time option in preferences

From here, you can verify that you’re using the right date and time.

Verify you are using the right date and time.

Under the  Time Zone tab, you can also enable your device to sync to your current location automatically. When you’re done, you can exit the window and try re-accessing the site.

3. Change Your DNS Settings

If the error is still there, you might want to check out your Domain Name Server (DNS)  settings. In a nutshell, your DNS acts like a phonebook that allows devices and sites to reach each other. Safari uses your DNS settings to connect to websites.

If there are issues with your DNS settings, it might be why you see the “Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server” message. To see if this is the case (and resolve it), you can try changing your DNS addresses. For example, you could use Google’s Public DNS.

To get started, browse to Apple  >  System Preferences  > Network .

Find the network option in preferences

From this window, select your connection, then click on the Advanced tab, followed by DNS . Next, click on the (+) icon next to IPv4 or IPv6 addresses .

Click on the DNS tab

Then you can enter the new DNS IP addresses. For example, if you want to use Google’s Public DNS, you can enter “8.8.8.8” and “8.8.4.4”.

Enter the new DNS IP addresses.

When you’re finished, click on the OK  button. Recheck the website to see if this process removed the error message.

4. Uninstall or Disable Your Browser Extensions

As we mentioned earlier, an extension or add-on in your browser may be conflicting with Safari’s ability to connect to a site securely. Sometimes, this is common with anti-virus programs and security-related extensions.

Therefore, the next step is to try deactivating all your browser extensions. To do this, you can open Safari, then navigate to Preferences  and click on the Extensions  tab.

Try disabling browser extensions

A list of your extensions will display in the left column. You can click on the checkmark next to the add-on name to disable it.

Once you’re done, try revisiting the site. If this solves the problem, you’ll need to pinpoint which extension was to blame. You can do this by systematically enabling each add-on and visiting the site after each time.

5. Disable IPv6

Internet Protocol (IP) is a set of rules that controls how data moves across the internet. IPv6 is a newer protocol version. However, some websites still use the older version, IPv4. If this is the case, it might be why you’re running into the “Safari can’t establish a secure connection” message.

Therefore, you can try disabling IPv6 on your network. To do so, navigate to System Preferences > Network once again, then click on your network connection, followed by the Advanced  button.

Under the TC P/IP tab, click on the dropdown menu under  Configure IPv6  and select Manually .

Configure IPv6 and select Manually

When you’re done, click on the OK button. This should resolve the issue if IPv6 were the problem. If not, there’s one last solution you can try.

6. Make Sure Keychain Trusts the Certificate

Earlier, we mentioned how Safari could sometimes present the connection error message if it cannot verify the validity of the site’s SSL certificate. If this is the case, you can bypass the issue by configuring settings in your macOS’s Keychain Access app.

Keychain Access is the application that stores your passwords , account details, and application certificates. It keeps your data secure and can control which sites are trusted by your device. As such, you can tell it to accept a site’s SSL certificate moving forward.

To do this, you can go to the website showing the error message, then click on the lock icon to the left of the address bar, followed by View/Show Certificate  > Details .

Check if Keychain trusts the certificate in preferences

With the Details panel expanded, click Control + Space Bar . A Spotlight Search bar will appear in the top right-hand corner of your screen. Enter “Keychain” in the search field.

Next, on the left, click on System Roots . Search for the website’s certificate. Once you locate it, go to the Trust section. Then click on the dropdown menu next to When using this certificate section  and select Always trust :

Select the Always Trust option under certificates

That’s it! You should now be able to access the site successfully.

Trying to access a website only to be met with an error message can be highly frustrating. While Safari is simply trying to keep your data protected, sometimes it can get misconfigured. In this case, the browser may unnecessarily present a security notification such as “Safari can’t establish a secure connection.”

There are six methods you can use to fix this issue when it happens:

  • Clear your browser data, including the cache and cookies.
  • Check your device’s data and time.
  • Change your DNS settings.
  • Uninstall or disable your browser extensions and add-ons.
  • Disable IPv6.
  • Make sure Keychain trusts the SSL certificate.

Tried as much of this as possible, and Safari still doesn’t work. Couldn’t try some things, because I’m running it on a PC, and not on a Mac.

However, I am able to access all sites with FireFox, so teh problem does seem to be with Safari. Too bad.

Thank you so much!!! My date was wrong and it fixed the issue thank u ❤️👍

I tried all six of the fixes you offered. All seemed to work – except I did not fully grasp the extensions one. Also cannot get to the lock on the website I’m trying to open (gov.uk) because that website won’t open so no lock is shown.

Great information. I went through every step and got to the SSl certificate section. There is no certificate for the site I’m attempting to visit. Safari will not allow me to visit many sites. So it isn’t just the one site.

8 Easy Ways to Fix Discord When It Won't Open

Discord won't open? Locked out of your channels? Here's how you fix it.

Is Discord acting up on your computer? While there’s no guaranteed way to fix the issue, there are some generic methods you can follow to potentially fix this app.

In this guide, you’ll learn what to do when Discord won’t open on your computer. So, here are eight ways to fix Discord on Windows 10.

1. Force Quit the Discord App

When Discord won’t get past the initial screen, the first thing you should do is to force close the app .

You can use Task Manager as follows to force close Discord:

  • Right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager .
  • Click the Processes tab, if you aren’t already there.
  • Find the entry named Discord in the list.
  • Right-click on the Discord entry and choose End task .

Once Discord is fully closed, relaunch it using your preferred way.

2. Run Discord as an Admin

One possible reason Discord won’t open is that the app doesn’t have the required permissions to run on your PC. You can fix most permission issues by running the app with admin privileges.

Here’s how you do that for Discord:

  • Find the Discord shortcut on your desktop, right-click it, and select Properties .
  • Click the Compatibility tab on the resulting screen.
  • Tick the box that says Run this program as an administrator .
  • Click Apply followed by OK at the bottom.

3. Update the Discord App

One of the reasons Discord won’t open is that you’re using an obsolete version of the app. If this is the case, updating Discord to the latest version should potentially fix the issue for you.

Updating Discord is as easy as installing it, and here’s how you do that:

  • Open a new browser tab and head to the Discord website.
  • Click the Download button and download the app to your computer.
  • Install the app as you normally would.

4. Delete Temporary Files

Your computer probably has numerous temporary files. These files aren’t of much use once their relevant programs have finished using them (here's why Windows isn't deleting these temp files automatically ).

Sometimes, these temporary files get into the way of various apps, including Discord. This can cause these apps to malfunction in many ways, and your issue might be caused by this.

Luckily, you can remove temporary files without affecting any of your programs. Here’s how to delete your temporary files:

  • Open a File Explorer window and navigate to the following directory. Make sure to replace username with your own username. C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp
  • Press the Ctrl + A keys on your keyboard to select all files in the folder.
  • Right-click any one file and select Delete .
  • Once the files are deleted, right-click the Recycle Bin on your desktop and choose Empty Recycle Bin . This is to ensure your files are gone for good.

5. Flush Your DNS Cache

Discord uses your DNS server to connect to the internet. If there’s an issue with these servers or their cache files, it can cause Discord not to open.

Fortunately, you can flush the DNS cache on your computer and this can potentially resolve the issue for you.

Here’s how you flush your DNS cache:

  • Open the Command Prompt utility.
  • Type the following command and press Enter . ipconfig /flushdns
  • Your DNS cache is now deleted.

6. Adjust the Date and Time Settings

Incorrect date and time settings cause issues with many apps, including Discord. If your computer’s date and time settings aren’t correct, you need to fix them first and then try and open the Discord app.

Here’s how to use automatic date and time on a Windows PC:

  • Open the Settings app and click on Time & Language .
  • Click Date & time on the left, if you aren’t already there.
  • Turn the Set time automatically option to the ON position.
  • Enable the Set time zone automatically option as well.

7. Remove Malware From Your PC

Malware causes many types of issues on a computer. Discord not launching could be the result of malware that has infected your computer.

Malware types can behave differently, and some of these variants can corrupt your app’s files. It might be that Discord has lost some of its core files to this malware.

In this case, it’s best if you run a malware check on your PC and make sure all malware is removed. Check out our comprehensive guide on how to remove malware from a computer  for all of your virus removal needs.

8. Reinstall the Discord App

If Discord still won't launch despite following several methods, there might be an issue with the app’s core files. You can’t actually manually verify these files to see if they are in good condition.

However, you can reinstall Discord and that will clean up the old files and bring fresh new core files.

Here’s how you reinstall Discord on your PC:

  • Launch the Settings app and click on Apps .
  • Find Discord in the list of installed apps.
  • Click Discord and then click the Uninstall button.
  • A prompt will appear; click Uninstall in this prompt.
  • Once Discord is removed, head over to the Discord site and download and install the app on your computer.

Use the Discord Web Version

If Discord continues to remain unavailable no matter what you do, you can use the app’s web version to get your urgent tasks done.

Discord actually has a version that works inside your web browsers. It offers pretty much the same features as the desktop app, and you can log in to your account in this web app and resume your work from where you left off in the actual app.

Here’s how:

  • Go to the Discord site.
  • Click the Open Discord in your browser button.
  • Log in to your Discord account and you should be all set.

Fixing Discord Launch Issues

There are a plethora of reasons Discord won’t open on your computer. Regardless, you can start from the first method above and then keep going down until you find a method that fixes your issue.

Discord has many features to offer and that’s probably the reason why it’s so popular. Make sure you’re getting the most out of this app as there might be features in it that you don’t yet know about.

I ran into a similar issue trying to access Discord servers through Safari on my iPad. It was frustrating not being able to join some servers because of the 'Safari cannot locate' error. However, I found a workaround by visiting a Discord Advertising Site which listed various servers that were accessible. One of my favorites is ~Z Server MP, a survival multi-player server for Minecraft. It also covers other games like TF2 and CnCNet, providing a diverse gaming experience. The server is committed to delivering the best experience possible while maintaining a small community vibe, which I really enjoy.

Discord Won’t Open in Windows? Try These 11 Fixes Now

One of these is sure to do the trick

Do you have trouble getting Discord to open on your PC? Various factors, like unexpected software glitches, conflicting settings, and file corruption, can result in the app crashing or hanging at startup. In this troubleshooting guide, you’ll learn multiple ways to fix Discord launch issues in Windows 10 and 11.

1. Fully Quit and Re-Open Discord

It’s best to kick things off by completely shutting down Discord before attempting to relaunch it. That should resolve any random technical issues preventing the app from opening. To do that, right-click the Discord icon on the system tray and select Quit .

If the system tray icon is unresponsive, you can shut down Discord and any stuck background processes using the Task Manager in Windows . Here’s how:

  • Right-click the Start button and select Task Manager .
  • Select a Discord process under the Processes tab and choose End task .
  • Continue ending all instances of Discord .

ending the discord task in Task Manager

After quitting Discord, re-open the app and check if it launches correctly. If not, restart your computer—open the Start menu and select Power > Restart —before moving on with the rest of the fixes.

2. Check for Discord Updates

Outdated software can cause compatibility issues, so the next fix involves ensuring you’re running the latest version of Discord . After attempting to open the application, right-click its icon on the system tray and select Check for Updates .

checking for updates from the Discord system tray icon

If Discord’s system tray icon fails to respond, download the Discord installer from the official Discord website . Run it, and it should automatically update the app and launch it afterward.

3. Run Discord as an Administrator

Insufficient permissions are another reason that interferes with Discord’s ability to launch. To fix the issue, try running the app as an administrator.

To do that, right-click the Discord icon on the desktop area—or search for Discord on the Start menu —and select Run as administrator .

running discord as administrator

If that helps, you can configure Discord to always run as an administrator. To do that:

  • Right-click the Discord shortcut on the desktop and select Properties .
  • Switch to the Compatibility tab.
  • Check the box next to Run this program as an administrator and select Apply .

Setting Discord to always run as administrator in compatibility properties

Note : If Discord is unavailable as a shortcut, open the Start menu , select All apps , and drag Discord to the desktop area to create one.

4. Clear the Discord Cache

Corrupt files within the Discord cache can lead to various anomalies, so clearing it might restore normal app functionality. To do that:

  • Press Windows + R to open a Run box.
  • Type %appdata%/discord and select OK .
  • On the File Explorer window that launches, delete the following Discord folders:

deleting folders in the discord cache

5. Enable/Disable Hardware Acceleration

By default, Discord relies on hardware acceleration to improve performance . However, that can cause the app to malfunction on various Windows configurations. To fix that, you’ll need to turn off this feature.

Since you can’t access the relevant setting via the Discord app, you’ll have to disable hardware acceleration using File Explorer and Notepad. Here’s how:

  • Fully exit Discord.
  • Press Windows + R , type %appdata%/discord , and press Enter .
  • Right-click the setting.json file and select Open with .
  • Choose Notepad and select Just once .
  • Replace true with false next to “enableHardwareAcceleration”: .

editing the discord settings.json file

  • Select File > Save and exit the Notepad window.
  • Relaunch Discord.

If that helps, update your computer’s video card drivers , re-enable hardware acceleration, and check if the issue recurs.

6. Check the Discord Server Status

Every time you open Discord, it tries to connect to its servers. If these servers have a problem, the app could stop loading or display a blank screen indefinitely.

Visit Discord’s official status page to ensure the servers are operational. If they’re experiencing an outage, you must wait for Discord to bring them back online.

7. Disable Proxies and VPN

If there’s nothing wrong with the Discord servers, consider disabling any active proxies or virtual private networks (VPNs) on your Mac, as they can interfere with app connectivity. To do that:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Go to Network & internet .
  • Visit the Proxy and VPN categories and disable manual or automatic proxy setups and VPNs.

8. Clear the DNS Cache

Obsolete DNS (Domain Name System) data can prevent Discord from connecting to its servers. To clear the DNS cache in Windows:

  • Open the Start menu , type cmd , and select Run as administrator .
  • Type the following command and press Enter : ipconfig /flushdns

running ipconfig /fushdns in command prompt

9. Allow Discord on the Windows Firewall

If the problem persists, check the Windows Firewall to ensure that Discord has permission to communicate with the internet freely. To do that:

  • Open the Start menu , type Windows Firewall , and select Allow an app through Windows Firewall .
  • Select the Change settings button.
  • Locate Discord and make sure the boxes under the Public and Private columns are active.

If Discord does not appear within the list, select Allow another app and add Discord from the following directory:

Local Disk C > Users > [Your Username] > AppData > Local > Discord

Note : Replace [Your Username] with your Windows username.

10. Correct the Date and Time

Incorrect system time settings can lead to Discord connection issues, so the next fix involves ensuring your computer’s clock is accurate. If it’s off, sync it with Microsoft’s time servers. Here’s how:

  • Go to Time & language > Date & time .
  • Select the Sync now button.

syncing the date and time in Windows settings

11. Uninstall and Reinstall Discord

As a last resort measure, try uninstalling and reinstalling Discord, as that can resolve corruption issues with the application. If you’d like to go ahead:

  • Right-click the Start button and select Apps & Features (Windows 10) or Installed apps (Windows 11).
  • Select Discord .
  • Select the More icon (three dots) and choose Uninstall .

  • Download the latest version of Discord .
  • Run the Discord installer to reinstall Discord.

Get Discord Up and Running Again

As long as you systematically work your way through the fixes above, you should be able to get Discord up and running pretty quickly. However, if none of them resolves the problem, contact Discord Support and use the web version of Discord in the meantime.
