Safari Energy Acquires Six Solar Projects From ECA Solar in Massachusetts

Solar projects in eversource territory expand the asset acquisition portfolio of aspen power, the leading distributed energy generation platform that acquired safari energy in november 2022..

NEW YORK AND BOSTON, September 1, 2021 – Leading solar company Safari Energy announced that it has acquired a portfolio of six solar projects located in the Greater Boston area from Waltham, MA-based ECA Solar. ECA Solar developed the projects and provided turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services. Safari Energy closed on the acquisitions when they reached the latter stages of development.

The portfolio is made up of rooftop solar systems, a solar carport canopy and ground-mounted solar panels. The systems are expected to produce as much as 5.6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, avoiding nearly 4,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, or the equivalent CO 2 emissions from 726 homes’ electricity use for one year, nearly 10,000 barrels of oil consumed, or more than 486 million smartphones charged.

“Building scale and velocity with this Massachusetts renewable energy portfolio was only possible with the support and expertise of the Safari Energy team. Their track record and communications made the closings a seamless process,” said Todd Fryatt, President, ECA Solar.

The portfolio that Safari Energy acquired includes three solar systems in Canton, two in Sharon and one in Woburn, Massachusetts, all of which are areas served by Eversource. The projects benefit from the SMART incentive program available in Massachusetts, which incentivizes renewable energy generation. ECA Solar also has projects in development in Colorado, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania.

Safari Energy recently announced that the company’s 500 th developed or acquired project is a 2 MW solar system that Safari owns located at Chevron U.S.A. Inc.’s San Joaquin Valley Business Unit’s offices in Bakersfield, California. To date, Safari Energy has acquired 116 solar projects in 8 states nationwide, totaling more than 150 MW in capacity.

Nuveen Partners with Safari Energy on Strategic Solar Portfolio

Nuveen Partners with Safari Energy on Strategic Solar Portfolio

"Nuveen has set out an ambitious vision for decarbonizing one of the world's largest real estate portfolios, requiring renewable energy sources like on-site solar, which can contribute to asset value, while delivering on environmental objectives," says John Lind, Managing Director, Safari Energy. "At Safari Energy, we're using advanced technology for a more efficient and accurate deployment, delivering superior operational and financial results for Nuveen." A focus on energy reduction has been the bedrock of Nuveen's approach to sustainable real estate investment and management for well over a decade. In 2020, the firm was recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy as a Better Buildings Challenge Goal Achiever for outperforming its 10-year commitment to reduce portfolio-wide energy-use intensity by at least 2 percent annually, across its 30 million sq ft U.S. real estate portfolio. Additionally, in March 2021, the firm published its pathway to achieve net zero carbon across its real estate portfolio by 2040, ten years ahead of the Paris Agreement goals. "Having a partner like Safari Energy supports our objective to embed ESG considerations in our investment decisions and business plans, making progress toward our net zero carbon milestones," says Jessica Long, Head of Sustainability for U.S. Real Estate at Nuveen. "Our teams need to know quickly if there is an opportunity for solar during transaction underwriting and asset managers are looking for ways to engage potential tenants during lease negotiations. Safari provides us with the expertise and immediate feedback that is critical in the fast paced real estate investment process." Nuveen began working with Safari Energy in 2020, when more than 300 megawatts (MW) of solar potential was identified on its real property. Since then, Safari Energy has commenced two projects at Nuveen properties, including a rooftop solar system being built at an industrial facility in Nashville, TN, and a hybrid solar + battery storage system being added to a property in Redlands, CA. Safari Energy takes a strategic and systematic approach to solar development. An initial property screening is conducted by Safari Energy's proprietary artificial intelligence platform. This enables the team to identify ideal solar rooftop, parking lot, parking deck and ground mounted opportunities. Nuveen also has access to a bespoke technology platform that Safari Energy designed, integrating multiple systems, and keeping various teams in sync on tasks. Safari Energy works directly with Nuveen's asset managers and tenants to coordinate permits, construction schedules and project statuses. Safari Energy is part of PPL Corporation, one of the largest regulated utility companies in the U.S. Safari Energy has developed or acquired more than 500 commercial scale solar projects nationwide. Spanning 24 states and Washington, D.C., Safari Energy's projects have generated more than 618,000 megawatt-hours of electricity, or the equivalent of avoiding more than 437,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions.

The new facility will be owned and operated by Safari Energy and will provide 100% of its power to the borough under a long-term PPA. The 86 acre system is expected to produce enough electricity to power over 2,600 homes which covers 10% of the borough’s annual electricity needs.

The Borough of Chambersburg is the largest of 35 municipal electric systems in Pennsylvania and is the only municipal electric system in the commonwealth to own and operate electric generating plants. Safari Energy, a PPL company, is a leading developer of solar power for commercial, industrial, and institutional customers nationwide. Vincent Sorgi, president and chief executive officer of PPL Corporation, delivered remarks at the event and was joined by leaders from PPL and Safari Energy.

Since 2008, Safari Energy has developed or acquired over 500 solar projects in 24 states and Washington, D.C. The company owns 120 solar projects in 9 states nationwide, totaling more than 170 MW of capacity.

The Borough of Chambersburg solar project was developed by Sun Tribe Development, one of the fastest growing clean energy companies in the Mid-Atlantic. The project is sited on land that is also home to an active shale mining operation. The effort to design, permit and construct a solar power plant on the site required close coordination with representatives from the borough, Hamilton Township, Franklin County, and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

News Release

Aspen power partners announces $350 million investment from carlyle to fuel growth and acquisition strategy.

With the goal of reaching gigawatt scale by mid-decade, Aspen acquires Safari Energy from PPL Corporation

DALLAS AND NEW YORK, November 3, 2022 – Aspen Power Partners LLC (“Aspen”) , a distributed generation platform with the mission of accelerating decarbonization, today announced a $350 million investment from funds managed by global investment firm Carlyle (NASDAQ: CG). The investment supports Aspen’s organic and acquisition-driven growth strategy targeting the community, multifamily, and commercial & industrial (“C&I”) solar and storage markets. To launch this strategy, Aspen has acquired Safari Energy, LLC (“Safari”) from PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL) .

The acquisition of Safari represents one of the industry’s largest distributed solar C&I transactions to date. Founded in 2008, Safari has acquired or developed more than 600 C&I solar projects nationwide. Spanning 24 states and Washington, D.C., Safari’s projects have generated more than 893,000 megawatt-hours of electricity, or the equivalent of avoiding more than 632,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions. Aspen has acquired Safari’s complete development platform including its 220 MW portfolio of operating and under-construction distributed generation solar assets. With Carlyle’s investment and the close of the Safari acquisition, Aspen is on track to achieve gigawatt scale by mid-decade.

“At Carlyle, we believe investing in renewables includes investing across the value chain. This includes investing in not only large utility scale renewable energy assets, but also community solar and distributed generation more broadly,” said Pooja Goyal, Chief Investment Officer of Carlyle’s Infrastructure Group. “We are very excited about our partnership with Aspen and look forward to facilitating the growth of their business into a distributed generation platform of scale.”

“We are thrilled to support Aspen at this inflection point and believe the platform is well-positioned to benefit from the transformational shift we see in decarbonizing the economy,” said J.B. Oldenburg, Managing Director on the Renewable and Sustainable Energy team at Carlyle. “Our investment in Aspen is a commitment to accelerating the widespread accessibility and availability of solar and storage, which we believe is accretive to our portfolio by supporting this decade’s ambitious renewable energy and climate change targets.”

Combining Safari’s leading platform and assets with Aspen’s community solar portfolios and multifamily solar pipeline will create a diversified distributed generation independent power producer. Aspen will continue to support Safari’s solutions-oriented service model and expects to broaden the combined company’s flexibility to meet customers’ evolving needs within the traditionally underserved distributed generation market. The firm is positioned to provide innovative and flexible solutions to the rapidly growing solar and storage marketplace.

“During this critical climate decade, as demand for solar, storage, and electric vehicle charging continues to expand, the Carlyle investment and Safari transaction provide a clear path forward for our team to execute a step-change in the scale of our impact,” said Jackson Lehr, Aspen Co-Founder and CFO.

“We want to thank our existing investors Ultra Capital, Lombard Odier, Redball Ventures, and Two Seven Ventures for supporting our growth to date and welcome the Carlyle team as our partners for this next stage of growth,” said Jorge E. Vargas, Aspen Co-Founder and CEO. “We also welcome our newest teammates from Safari and look forward to all we can accomplish together in the months and years ahead.”
