Safari Jeep
Karen here! Back in December, my guy and I went on a very long road trip through California, Arizona and New Mexico along some parts of Route 66. We took his dog Sadie (who is surviving cancer and is such a sweetie). On the whole trip, I was envisioning using the Safari Jeep to make a Planner Essential page. I ended up doing both a Sidekick-sized page (for my “him and me” album) and a regular sized page (for Sadie’s album).
First up, the regular-sized Planner Essentials page for Sadie’s album. I used a Planner Essentials 4 for the base and added the Safari Jeep with a picture of us in the car. The jeep is cut with a combination of 90 lb Soft Finish Cardstock and some brown and black cardstock. The jeep is so easy to put together as I used 101mm Double Sided Adhesive before die cutting for the pieces on top. The hearts down the side are from the Planner Essentials 40 set (and is die cut also with the 101mm Double Sided Adhesive. The huge arrow pointing to sweet Sadie is from the Library Pocket set. And I added a Fitted Circle die cut for interest.
On the back of the page, I added some cute pictures of her int he back of the car. The silver die cut on the side is also from the Planner Essentials 40 set. Car Vibes is cut with the stitched letters in the Planner Essentials 37 set. I added another couple Fitted Circles on top.
Next up, I adhered another jeep to the front of a large Stitched Circle die. I did a second pass on my die cutting machine with the Sidekick Essentials 5 (that lopped off the bottom of the circle and cut the holes). This page is for my Sidekick-sized Planner in which I keep memories of him and me.
On the back, I added a picture of our favorite stop (Sedona, AZ) and some journaling (along with another Fitted Circle. And for all these pages, of course, I added a fun reinforcements from one of the Reinforcement Variety Packs.
Thank you so much for stopping by today!
Craftily yours, Karen

I’ve been seeing a lot of my friends post pictures of their first kid getting their driving permit or actually driving off to school. I’m sure they are as thrilled as this puppy, ears flying back as he takes to the road with his fishing rod. I’m still safe for another year…
To make this card:
I found that with the jeep die and the word dies, a 5″x7″ card base works a lot easier than my usual A2 base. I used a dark gray stock as my base – the same as my bit of road showing on the bottom. In fact, that bit is from trimming down my 8.5″ x 11″ sheet of card stock after folding in half to make my card base. Use your scraps as soon as possible! Lol!
Die cut all the pieces you need: My jeep uses black, white, and blue cardstock. The “happy” is the same blue as the jeep and the “Day” is also cut from the scrap in step 1. I used a Molotov Chrome maker for my grill and headlights but you can use silver card stock if you don’t have that. The fishing rod is out of white cardstock and colored with Copic markers. The dog is cut out of Soft Finish card stock and sponged with Distress Oxide Tea Dye ink. I put the jeep together first and added some shine by drawing in with a white gel pen.
Create your background by lightly sponging clouds and adding some greenery with the bushes from Adventure Edges. Adhere the strip for the road. My background piece was 4.5″ x 6.5″. I matted it with a 1/16″ border with a light grey cardstock.
Adhere all the pieces as you see on the card. I found it easier to stick the puppy behind the steering wheel of the jeep, then the fishing rod, and then the entire thing onto the card.
As you can see, I chose “happy Day” as my sentiment but in hindsight, or maybe foresight, I should do a “Good Luck” card for the teenager testing or the mom letting go. Heehee!

Safari-Themed Playdate and FREE Printable
With the weather so nice in the afternoons, I want to get my kids outside more often. They wanted to see their friends, so we invited them all over for a semi-structured safari-themed party playdate with Oriental Trading Company . I set up a few decorations, some snacks, a game, and a craft for the kids to enjoy.
Some of the activities needed some guidance with the age range of the kids who participated, but they were not overly-structured so the adults could still relax. I combined indoor and outdoor activities as well to give a change of atmosphere.
Binocular Craft
What You Need
- Colored craft rolls (2 per project)
- Crayons/markers/stickers
- Metallic washi tape
- Hole puncher
You can go two ways with this: assemble these beforehand (recommended) or assemble these during the party (what we did to give the kids more creative freedom.) If you have help, you can assemble them during the party. Below is the example project I made to share with the kids as a visual for their binoculars.
1. Hold two craft rolls together and carefully tape them together with washi tape around each end. Wrap tightly so they do not fall apart; I wrapped two layers of tape around each end.
*If you want these to be more like regular binoculars and you have the time/supplies (I did not get around to this), you can hot glue two medium-sized wooden beads between the rolls just prior to taping. If you do this, it may be easier to pre-assemble the binoculars depending on your playdate size.
5. Lace the yarn through the hole and tie the strings tightly onto the tubes so they do not come undone.
Snack Ideas
I always serve more nutritious, small, and usually inexpensive snacks. This time I served pretzel sticks, grapes that I got a great deal on, juice boxes, and had bananas as a decoration but available if requested.
Decorations
These were very simple as that was not the focus of the playdate, unlike a lot of the parties we throw. I simply set up a little area with the snacks and craft supplies, hung a toy parrot off of the light fixture, and put a toy snake and frog around the snack area. The supplies for the game were sitting on one of the seats.
Safari Seek Game
Each child was given a chance to be the seeker and wear the pith hat and vest. The other kids wore the animal hats (giraffe, monkey, elephant, tiger, and lion.) They then had to hide for the safari guide to find. Of course, the kids at our party were a little too young to understand what it meant to hide, but it still worked with them running around.

Safari Crafts and Activities
Safari crafts and activities are a great way to keep the kids entertained this Summer while learning lots of new things about animals and wildlife. A big thank you to our friends at Melissa & Doug for sponsoring our wild adventures while we celebrated “Safari Week” here at home! These safari crafts and activities are easy to set up, fun to do, and the perfect way to add a bit of special excitement to your Summer days.
Here are some of our favorite safari crafts and activities:
1. safari sticker-by-number.
Don’t let a little rain get in the way of your wild animal fun! These stained glass made easy and sticker-by-numbers sets from Melissa & Doug are perfect for a rainy day project while working on important fine-motor skills and number recognition.
2. Put on a Wild Animal Puppet Show
We found this pack of animal hand puppets from Melissa & Doug works very well for this! Draw up a storyboard, write a script, and craft up some scenery. Lots of imaginative storytelling fun!
3. Read Storybooks about Animals
Some of our favorites are: How the Zebra Got Its Stripes, Mr. Tiger Goes Wild, I’d Really Like to Eat a Child, and Giraffes Can’t Dance
4. Go on a Picnic Breakfast Adventure
Pack up your favorite cereal, some spoons, a bottle of milk, and some fresh fruit to enjoy at your favorite park in the morning before the weather gets too hot. After, go on a hike to see how many different kinds of animals you may be able to spot.
5. Visit Your Local Zoo
Take a field trip to visit your local zoo, learn more about wildlife, and have up-close encounters with amazing animals. Try to come up with one new question about each animal, and research for answers when you get back home.
6. Safari Paint with Water
I love how easy these paint with water pages from Melissa & Doug are to set up, and the kids think they are almost magical! Use a paintbrush with water to lift the paint from the palette at the top of each page. Then paint using that color on the sheet. Super easy and lots of fun!
7. Pick a Wild Animal and Research About It
Choose one wild animal you would like to learn more about, then visit your local library to find books and more information about that animal. Design a poster with the information you gather.
8. Watch a Nature Program
Some of our current favorites are Planet Earth and Hidden Kingdoms — amazing photography and videography! Plus, you are sure to learn something new about wildlife.
9. Make Your Own Trail Mix
If your pantry is full of almost-empty boxes of cereals and snacks, it may be time to make your own trail mix. Set out bowls with a variety of cereals, crackers, pretzels, and other snacks (whatever you already have on-hand) — along with a few spoons and bags to hold the snack mix. Invite the kids to make up their own mixture of trail mix. Later, bring your homemade trail mix along on your next hiking adventure.

10. Try Animal-Inspired Monoprinting!
Use mini paint rollers to spread washable paint evenly on the bottom of a baking dish, then use cotton swabs to make designs in the paint. Press a sheet of paper over top of the paint. Lift it up to reveal your unique monoprint design! My kids enjoyed this simple painting technique to make animal-inspired prints over and over again!

Jeep's Easter Safari Builds Go All Retro For 2024
W ith the 58th annual Easter Jeep Safari well underway in Moab, Utah, Stellantis has pulled the cover off of four brand-new off-road concepts. The lineup includes two highly-modified Wranglers, a big-tired Gladiator pickup, and a seriously retro take on the Grand Wagoneer , all of which take a look back at some of the Jeep’s greatest work for inspiration. Here’s what you need to know about these factory-modified wheelers.
Wrangler Low Down Concept
Jeep has built more than 100 of these custom 4x4s since 2008, but only a select few have managed to stick in the minds of the Jeep faithful. The new Rubicon 392 -based Wrangler Low Down concept pays homage to one of the most famous Easter Jeep Safari builds, the Lower 40 concept from 2009. That early build featured a V-8 engine swap under the hood, and made use of gigantic 40-inch rubber despite a stock ride height. The new truck is a bit more extreme, trading that old-school 5.7-liter V-8 for the potent 6.4-liter engine provided by the Rubicon 392. The new build also retains the stock suspension package from the Rubicon 392 model, but swaps out the stock Dana 44 axle for more robust Dana 60s with 5.38 gears. Those beefier axles help support the truck’s massive 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler mud-terrain tires, which come installed on a set of 20-inch beadlock wheels. The stock fenders have been replaced with a set of flared carbon units, which help give the truck a purposeful stance. A Poison Apple Red paint job and a red-tinted bikini top are a nice nod to the original concept as well.
Wrangler 4xe Willys Dispatcher Concept
The second Wrangler build looks even further back in brand history, paying respects to the early civilian model Jeep from the post-war era . Based on the 4xe hybrid model, this Willys Dispatcher Concept gets some old-school appearance tweaks, including custom steel bumpers at both ends. The hood also features stamped “Willys” branding, which it shares with the original seven-barred product. Upgraded Dana 50 axles with 4.70 gears help increase capability, as do the Super Traxion 36-inch tires. That rubber comes wrapped around retro-style steel wheels, which are finished in a cream hue. The SUV itself is finished in a bespoke shade of Element 115 Green paint, which is accented nicely by the blacked out windshield banner. The best looking part of this custom SUV is the interior, complete with distressed saddle leather and houndstooth inserts throughout. The headrests have been pulled from the seats to improve that retro appearance. It’s the sort of thing we’d love to see make its way to the production models, however unlikely. The throwback style Warn Winch is another nice touch and helps to round out the package.
Gladiator High Top Concept
The Gladiator High Top Concept is a bit less of an involved build, borrowing mostly from the Jeep Performance Parts catalog. Upgrades include items like an AccuAir air suspension system, which work with Dana 60 axles at both ends to support 4x4 endeavors. The suspension system is put to the ground via a gigantic set of 40-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3s, which come wrapped around a set of 18-inch KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels. A set of flat fender flares and AEV bumpers ensure that the large rubber is covered and ready for road-use, while giving the pickup some additional flair. Out back you’ll find a truck bed storage system by Decked, which brings a bit of overlanding capability to the build. A Warn Winch and some rock slider steps have also been added should any off-roading adventures take a turn for the worse.
Vacationeer Concept
Rounding out the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari lineup is the Grand Wagoneer-based Vacationeer Concept. The design is a clear nod to the original Wagoneer models, complete with the oh-so lovely wood grain graphics missing from the current production model. The woody look pairs very nicely with the Spearmint paint, which has slightly more white in the mix than the aforementioned Element 115 color. The wheel openings have also been massaged to make room for the larger 35-inch tires, which come wrapped around 18-inch Method Race wheels. A 1.5-inch suspension lift adds a bit of aggression to the stance, while bringing a bit more off-road capability to the table. The rear rows of seats have been removed in favor of a carbon-fiber RedTail Overland Skyloft, which serves as a passthrough rooftop tent for ideal camping conditions. Under the hood sits a high output variant of the Hurricane inline-six engine, which provides 510 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. That said, the real highlight of this build is found on the interior, where Jeep enlisted the assistance of fashion designer Kiel James Patrick. The custom flannel seats feature famous Jeep models from years gone by, and fit with the theme perfectly. This is exactly how the Grand Wagoneer should have looked in production form, but we’ll settle for a concept like this one.
The Easter Jeep Safari runs through March 31st, 2024 in Moab, Utah. If you’re a diehard Jeeper, it might be worth the trek to lay eyes on these unique concept vehicles.
