We had a great trip with Calma Sailing. Dominik was an excellent instructor with comprehensive coverage of the Sail Canada Basic Cruising Skills course. He was also an excellent host during off-hours offering delicious food and interesting conversation. The scenery was spectacular. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone wishing to experience Desolation Sound by sailboat.

Dominik is a great teacher and full of knowledge! Before taking his lessons, I was pretty nervous about sailing and being out on the water. Dominik helped me become a more confident, capable sailor. I highly recommend him for anyone wanting to learn how to sail or to learn more about sailing!

It was truly an amazing experience from start to finish. Dominik, the instructor, was incredibly knowledgeable and patient, making the learning process enjoyable and stress-free… On top of that, the gourmet food provided by Calma Sailing was simply outstanding, adding a touch of luxury to the entire journey. I highly recommend Calma Sailing and Dominik as an instructor for anyone looking to learn how to sail while enjoying delicious meals along the way.

We have the most beautiful memories from our trip with Dominik. He was a wonderful captain, and gave us an unforgettable tour through desolation sound… We are eternally grateful for our time in desolation sound and the absolute beauty we were lucky enough to experience. Also, the food was OUTSTANDING!

Dominik and Ania were both attentive and communicated proactively to ensure our family would have a great experience. The four of us had a mix of sailing experience and expectations which Dominik adapted to in our 5 day course. The food was exceptional and the boat is comfortable and clean. Calma Sailing exceeded our expectations at every step of the trip planning and our tour of Desolation Sound. Thank you Dominik and Ania from Grant, Angie, Arden and Sage!!!!

I just spent 5 days on a liveaboard course with Calma Sailing and it was the BEST! Dominik is an excellent instructor and I felt that we were in the best care on the trip. The Discovery Islands is an incredible place to learn to sail – we saw pods of humpback whales, orca, and he showed us so many magnificent wilderness gems around the islands – it was the most amazing classroom on the water! I feel so much more confident to sail my own boat and will absolutely be coming back for more courses and tours with Calma.

Just back from the 5-day cruise… a fantastic trip! We wanted to experience sailing in Desolation Sound and it was everything we hoped it would be… great scenery, sailing, conversation and food. Dominik was an amazing host and made each day special… Desolation Sound is not to be missed, especially with only the sound of wind in the sails. Really spectacular nature, solitude and quiet, a much needed respite from urban living. We will be back!

This was something I have been wanting to do for a long time and it was the experience of a lifetime! Breathtakingly beautiful and very professional, I would thoroughly recommend Calma Sailing.

Welcome aboard!

Prepare yourself for an adventure that balances the thrill of sailing the legendary winds of Squamish with the breathtaking views of the Coastal and Tantalus mountain ranges.

We depart from Squamish, located at the tip of Howe Sound (about 40 minutes north of Vancouver on the highway to Whistler) and raise the sails as we pass beneath the famous Stawamus Chief granite monolith and breathtaking Shannon Falls.

Regardless of expertise or ability, you will learn about sailing and experience unbounded excitement as the wind fills the sails and accelerates our 40' sailboat across the waters of British Columbia's southernmost fjord. Take a turn at the helm or grind a winch to trim sails - the more involved you become, the more fun you will have.

A dance of colourful kites await as we tack offshore in the afternoon's inflow winds. The same topographic phenomenon that makes the area perfect for sailing attracts kiteboarders from around the world.

We will explore the northern section of the Howe Sound fjord and promise many photo opportunities that will stand amongst the highlights of your trip.

With a little luck, we may even sight a pod of dolphins or Orcas!

Safety Equipment

Your safety is important to us! We follow Transport Canada regulations and have everything needed for guests of all ages, shapes and sizes to enjoy a safe and fun sail.

Non-alcoholic beverages will be provided for your enjoyment while underway. Feel free to bring your own refreshments, but please avoid plastics on deck.

What to Bring

We'll provide refreshments while underway. Feel free to bring along anything else that you may want to enjoy, such as snacks or water, but avoid breakable glass and single use plastics whenever possible, please.

Summer is a beautiful time in BC, but weather can always be variable. It’s a good idea to check the forecast and dress accordingly, noting that it can be a few degrees cooler on the water. We have lots of room on board, so grab extra layers for warmth and wind/rain protection.

Don’t forget the sunscreen! The sun’s rays are reflected by the water, so a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are highly recommended, even on an overcast day.

Please wear soft soled non-marking shoes while on-board (like tennis or skate shoes). Boots, shoes with heavy soles and heels can cause damage and are a safety hazard, and are therefore not allowed!

Finally, bring along your friends, your camera and a great sense of humour. We can’t wait to have you aboard!

Guest's can choose to participate in a hands-on role to help sail the vessel, or sit back in the Admiral's chair, enjoy the stunning scenery and help us keep an eye out for marine-life. Desolation Sound

Desolation Sound is a place of magnificent beauty, where mountains rise up from the sea in the deeply cut glacial fjords. W arm sea temperatures, picturesque anchorages, and a mild climate make it a world class boating and sea kayaking destination.

Cassel Lake & Refuge Cove

Departing from Squirrel Cove, we head North towards West Redonda Island and the granite walls of Teakerne Arm. With the anchor set near Cassel Falls we disembark for a short, Arbutus lined hike to the warm waters of Cassel Lake for a swim. Each year, between Spring and Fall, Humpback Whales return to British Columbia and Alaska from their Pacific breeding grounds to feed. Along with the seasonal arrival of the Humpbacks come a sailor’s chance to dance with summer trade winds!

Travellers looking for an epic transpacific voyage can cruise from Vancouver to New Zealand with multiple stops in coveted destinations.

Princess Cruises takes guests down the ruggedly beautiful Pacific Coast en route to California before sailing to Hawaii. The voyage includes exotic stops such as Tahiti and American Samoa before disembarking in New Zealand. 

Passengers will sail on the five-star Royal Princess, which offers a range of exciting amenities, including Princess Cruises’ largest top-deck pool that features an evening water and light show, mini-golf, movies under the stars, renowned spa treatments, a disco, nine bars, tennis and much more.

The cruise overnights in Vancouver at Canada Place on Sept. 21 before spending a day in Victoria on Sept. 22. Passengers will then have a couple of days to enjoy the ship before stopping in San Francisco on Sept. 25. The Golden City is home to several popular attractions that can be seen in a day, including excursions to Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. 

After one more day at sea, guests will spend a day in San Deigo before stopping in sunny Los Angeles on Sept. 28. 

The voyage includes five days at sea to reach the tropical Hawaiian Islands, where it stops in Honolulu on Oahu and the Big Island.

Passengers will enjoy another five days on the ship before spending two days in Tahiti and one in Moorea on the Society Islands on Oct. 12. After three more sea days, the ship spends a day in Pago Pago, American Samoa.

The cruise includes three more days at sea, crossing the international dateline before sailing into Tauranga, New Zealand on Oct. 21. It disembarks on Oct. 22 in Auckland.

There are four stateroom categories to choose from, including the interior, balcony, mini-suite, and suite. No ocean views are available on this sailing (see slide two).

The interior stateroom is the best option for folks travelling on a budget. While they won't enjoy any fresh air in their rooms, there are plenty of places around the ship to enjoy the view or stand outside. The lowest price for two people is $6,727.86 or $3,363.93 per person. This total breaks down to a per-diem, per-person amount of $112.13 (see slide three).

Travellers in parties of three or more can also take advantage of some discounted offers.

The cost for the 30-day cruise includes transportation on a beautiful five-star vessel, meals, entertainment, snacks and lodging. The only thing it doesn’t factor in is alcohol, Wi-Fi or tips, but you may purchase packages to reduce the price.

Flights home from New Zealand shouldn't depart the same day the cruise disembarks in Auckland. Plus, "Middle Earth" is home to several shooting locations from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and other intriguing attractions and places you might want to explore. 

One-way flights from Auckland start at around $880 and include a stop before Vancouver. However, you can also create a multi-stop itinerary that includes several days in Honolulu, Oahu.
