Schotia Safaris is the oldest private game reserve in the Eastern Cape of  South Africa ,  bordering the eastern side of Addo Elephant National Park .

Enjoy your Safari in South Africa on this  malaria free reserve , which is probably the most densely stocked reserve in Africa, and with over 40 mammal species and approximately 2000 animals , can offer consistently good game viewing throughout the year.

Schotia was the first reserve in the Cape Province to have free roaming lions and we can almost guarantee sightings of these magnificent animals on every Schotia Tooth & Claw game drive .

The Eastern Cape Private Game Reserve is owned, managed and run 'hands on' by the Bean family, who are now in their sixth generation and have owned the original farm, Orlando, since the early 1800's. 

With over 25 years of experience in the safari business , Peter and his team have created a unique, relaxed and truly South African Safari experience at Schotia.

Schotia Safaris Private Game Reserve has a huge open air lapa, reputedly among the largest in South Africa. It has reed and sneezewood walls and is open to the African skies, except for the outer ring where a traditionally thatched roof covers the dining tables and bar area.

Inside the lapa there are several large 'Schotia' trees and a roaring log fire. Dinner is usually a mix of safari cuisine and traditional South African cooking, the exact menu depends on what is available on the day.

Schotia Private Game Reserve is located just a short drive from Port Elizabeth, Addo, Port Alfred or Grahamstown.

Schotia Safaris is a private Addo game reserve and Chrislin guests will have the opportunity to taken as close as possible to get the best viewing of rhino, hippo, giraffe and the king of the beasts, lion. Schotia Safaris will try to show guests as much as possible on the game drive and concentrate on the popular sightings rather than ‘the birds and the bees’.

The Schotia Safari Tour is a four hour guided game drive in an open Land Rover with a short refreshments and toilet break at the halfway point. After an amazing experience where you will view more animals than you thought possible, enjoy a delicious dinner which is prepared over an open fire. A short, spotlit night drive providing the possibility of more nocturnal animals completes your experience as we return to our reception area.

ACTIVITIES OFF OUR RESERVE

The Schotia Tooth & Claw Safari is a four hour guided game drive in an open Land Rover or Land Cruiser with a short refreshment and toilet break at the halfway point. After an amazing experience, where you will view more animals than you thought possible, enjoy a delicious dinner which is prepared over an open fire. Schotia tries to show guests as much as possible on a drive and concentrate on the popular sightings like Rhino, Buffalo, Elephant, Hippo, Giraffe and the King of the Beasts – Lions!! A short, spot lit night game drive providing the possibility of more nocturnal animals completes your experience as you return to the reception area.

Arrival from 14h30:   Report to reception (sign indemnity; make sure bookings are correct etc.) Meet your guide/ranger. Enjoy a cup of tea/coffee. Make sure you have all your cameras, batteries, jackets, binoculars etc. Please inform the office if you have any special requirements e.g. wheelchairs, frail, children, fears, allergies, dietary requirements etc. Please make sure that you have absolutely no fruit in any bag, handbag, packet or jacket pocket. The reason for this is that the elephants can smell food, whether open or closed and they will try to get it.

From 15:00 to about 18:30:   you will view many Antelope, Wildebeest, Zebra, Crocodile, Giraffe, Rhino, Hippo, Elephants, Lions, etc. At around 16:30: you will have a toilet and refreshment stop.

At about 19:00:   you will go to the Lapa for a lovely cooked meal around the fires. The usual menu is venison or beef stew/roast, chicken casserole, roast potato, rice, mixed vegetables in cheese sauce, mushroom sauce, home-made bread, dessert, tea / coffee.

Charihandra guided game drive.

Experience the beautiful landscape while viewing nature and free-roaming animals from an open safari vehicle. Learn from your knowledgeable guide as you make your way through the game farm. Beverages are included to make this a most enjoyable experience. Guided game drives are weather dependent.

Duration: 2 Hours. Available as a Sunset or Morning drive.

What to bring: Sunglasses, sun-block, hat, camera, warm sweater in winter or cooler weather.

Schotia Safari (“Tooth and Claw” Safari)

The Schotia Tooth & Claw Safari is a four hour guided game drive in an open Land Rover with a brief stop for refreshments and a toilet break at the halfway point. After an amazing experience, where you will view more animals than you thought possible, you can enjoy a delicious dinner which is prepared over an open fire, followed by a short spotlit night game drive providing the possibility of seeing nocturnal animals completing your experience as we return to our reception area.

Duration: ±6 Hours

Guided Addo Game Drive

Our experienced and enthusiastic Guide will locate as much game as possible during your drive. As the drive is all day, you will likely have the opportunity to see most game species. The first few hours are usually good to see antelope, zebra and lion. At 10h30 we will stop for a tea/coffee and a rusk break, we then continue with the drive. Usually, we have good sightings of elephants and buffalo in the late morning near the waterholes. At lunchtime, we’ll stop again and serve a delicious South African “braai”, consisting of 3 types of meat, salads and rooster brood. A delicious vegetarian option is available on request. Refreshments include; red & white wine, beer, tea or coffee, fruit juice and mineral water. After lunch, we continue with the game drive and leave the park at around 17h30 and return to the lodge.

Game viewing from your own vehicle

Addo National Park The main artery through the park is tarred and the various loops off it are well-maintained gravel roads. Explore more than 75 kilometres of road through prime wildlife country. There are several lookout points at waterholes.

Open hours change according to season. No reservation is required. Park entry/conservation fees can be paid at the main gate. Restaurants and toilets are available within the park.

Sundays River Sunset Cruise

Inhale in the fresh ocean air while cruising along the serene Sundays River, watching out for indigenous birdlife and marvelling at the towering Alexandria Dune Sea which is the largest and least degraded coastal dune field in South Africa, close to the Addo Elephant Park.

The river cruise includes a stop at these magnificent dunes, from the top of which you can enjoy one of the most spectacular views in Nelson Mandela Bay, the vast blue sea and sky and the islands of the coastal section of Addo National Park.

What to wear: Anything you feel comfortable cruising in. A jacket is necessary on cooler days.

Duration: 1.5-hour and 2.5-hour cruises are available.

What to bring: Sunglasses, sunscreen, binoculars for the bird lovers, a camera, jacket or something warm, and a cooler box with plenty of ice.

Drinks can be pre-packed and purchased at Charihandra Lodge. Snack platters can also be pre-booked with us.

Adrenaline Addo

Zip Line: A short hike up to the edge of the valley finds the starting platform of the highest, longest and fastest double zip-line in the country! Fast, fun, and safe, this exhilarating ride begins from a vantage point 60 meters above the Sundays River, overlooking a valley of lush citrus orchards. Zip for 500m over the valley and finish off with a refreshing drink at the picturesque café next to the river.

Giant Swing: The first of its kind in South Africa and guaranteed to swing you to new heights. After being hoisted up 18 metres high, the rest is history as they say. A release into oblivion, the sky your limit, this is the ultimate feeling of freedom and a fantastic activity for the energetic “adrenalin junkies”.

Eco Quad Biking

Crisscross Adventures Exhilarating quad biking tours, off the beaten track through Addo’s spectacular environment, from Valley Bushveld and the Sunday River to beautiful citrus orchards. The tracks vary from scenic routes on open roads and citrus orchards for beginners to technical routes which have sneaky twists and inclines along the Sundays River.

Times: 09h30, 11h30 and 14h30

Rates: POA. Rates include parking fees, snacks, and drinks (minimum 2 people). Excludes Transfer.

Sundays River Sandboarding

Experience sandboarding or sandsledding on the famous Alexandria Dune Field, the largest and least degraded coastal dune sea in Africa. The fresh ocean air will embrace you as your board skips across the sand on your way down to the Sundays River- it’s one wild ride!

You’ll depart from the dock at Colchester, Addo, with a short boat cruise along the Sundays River to the soaring dunes. There’s time to take in the beauty of the river, birdlife and the coastal section of the Addo National Park before the fun starts.

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned sand boarder, our guides will have you boarding like a pro in no time! Excursions are available in 2 or 3-hour tours, which will give you enough time to get into your groove, master some new skills and cool off in the river. To suit a variety of boarders, we have standing boards (like snowboards) or a belly board upon which you can sit or lie down. The variety of our offerings makes sandboarding in Addo perfect for a family and all who are wild at heart and looking to have an all-around good time.
