Search and rescue efforts for cruise passenger who went overboard off Sydney

As search and rescue efforts are underway to find a passenger believed to have gone overboard off Sydney, passengers on board a nearby ship said the scene at sea was “scary” as waves swirl and police boats take over the water.

A large-scale search is underway off Sydney after a cruise ship passenger went overboard .

P&O’s Pacific Adventure was due in Sydney Harbour before 6am but as of 7am, remains in waters off the Eastern Suburbs.

Carnival Splendor, which was also due to dock at 6.30am at Circular Quay, remains anchored outside the heads and unable to move while the frantic search continues.

Speaking to news.com.au, a passenger on board the Splendor cruise ship said police boats were circling the waters.

“We’re docked out at sea and aren’t allowed in yet due to the search and rescue,” he said on Monday.

A cruise ship, the Carnival Splendor, sits off the coast of Sydney as search and rescue efforts try to find a passenger who has gone overboard from nearby P&O Pacific Adventure.

“An announcement came out for us at 7am saying that an emergency rescue operation was being conducted and we weren’t allowed to enter the channel into the harbour.

“We are maybe 20km out from land and will stay here until we get permission to head back in.”

The passenger said while the overboard passenger wasn’t from his ship, the Carnival Splendor, the vibe on board was still “scary”.

“A police board recently rocked up,” he said.

“I don’t think many people know that there is a passenger overboard nearby. We had heard a rumour.”

It is understood that the Splendor was on standby to assist in the search but is now heading to port and is expected to arrived around 10.30am on Monday.

Just before 8am, P & O confirmed the search to news.com.au, revealing staff are consoling the missing passenger’s family.

“Pacific Adventure is currently undertaking a search and rescue operation off Sydney after a person overboard alarm was raised at 4am,” a spokesperson said.

Police boats circle amid a frantic search and rescue off Sydney.

“Since this time, the ship carrying more than 2,600 guests, has been onsite searching along with other nearby vessels deployed to the area by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.”

“The family of this guest is being cared for by our on-board team while every effort is being made to find them.”

Pacific Adventure’s arrival into White Bay Terminal this morning has been delayed while the search continues.

One man who was supposed to pick up passengers from the Pacific Adventure told 2GB he was told “don’t rush” because “the ship’s stopped outside the head and somebody’s gone overboard.”

The Bureau of Meteorology said a ‘strong wind warning’ was in place for Sydney and parts of the east coast, causing swells of around 2.5 metres at sea.

Southeasterly 20 to 30 knots winds were likely throughout Monday, decreasing to 15 to 25 knots in the late evening.

More to come

The brutal killing of two Aussie brothers and their friend while on a surfing holiday has horrified the country, now a dark secret is emerging.

The parents of the Perth brothers who were killed in Mexico must now make arrangements to bring their bodies back to Australia.

The American man who was killed alongside his Australian friends was set to get married in just a few months as heartbreaking images emerge.

Body found in search for passenger overboard on Pacific Adventure cruise ship due to arrive in Sydney

A cruise ship from above surrounded by choppy seas.

A body has been found in a large search operation off the coast of Sydney after a man was reported missing off a cruise ship early Monday.

About 10:30am, officers from the Police Marine Area Command retrieved a body from the water.

The alarm was raised on the P&O vessel Pacific Adventure about 4am when it was about 10 nautical miles, or 18 kilometres, off Sydney Heads.

The ship was due to dock at White Bay Terminal a few hours later but that was delayed as the search was underway.

NSW Police Marine Commander Joseph McNulty earlier said police were hopeful because one of three emergency life rings that had been deployed had not been retrieved, fuelling hope the man may have latched onto it.

Swells of 4 to 5 metres hindered efforts of rescue teams, which searched a 60-square-nautical-mile area and used infrared technology to search for the man's heat signature.

A second cruise ship which was in the area has also joined the search.

Both ships tried to lower life boats in to the water but had to abort due to the rough conditions.

Family being cared for onboard

At least three police vessels and a number of tug boats were deployed in the search, alongside the Toll rescue helicopter.

In a statement, P&O said there were more than 2,600 guests still on board the ship, which has now been cleared to return to port in Sydney.

"Pacific Adventure's next voyage due to depart White Bay this afternoon has been delayed, with the ship expected to leave later tonight on a four-night voyage to Queensland," it said.

"We thank guests for their care, understanding and patience on what's been a distressing day for guests and crew.

"Our thoughts are with the family of the guest at this difficult time."

Police have launched an investigation into the death and will prepare a report for the coroner.

Princess Cruises Announces Revised 2025 World Cruise Itineraries

Uncertainties in the Red Sea and Surrounding Region Prompts Rerouting of Global Voyages

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. , April 30, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Given the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and surrounding area and following extensive consultation with global security experts and government authorities, Princess Cruises is revising the itineraries for its two 2025 World Cruises , which will no longer visit the Middle East or Asia , and now instead, will offer new port stops in Africa and Europe.

Princess Cruises Logo (PRNewsfoto/Princess Cruises)

"A Princess World Cruise is truly the voyage of a lifetime and after careful consideration with guidance from global security experts and government authorities, we know our guests will understand and appreciate the change to our upcoming 2025 itineraries to avoid certain areas," said Terry Thornton , chief commercial officer of Princess Cruises . "These global events beyond our control have necessitated these reroutings but we are pleased to continue to ensure these world cruises retain destination-rich itineraries with incredible stops along the west Africa coast and the Mediterranean."

Island Princess World Cruise Sailing from North America on Island Princess, the 116-day World Cruise offers two roundtrip options with departures from both Ft. Lauderdale, embarking January 5, 2025 , and Los Angeles on January 20, 2025 , and ends in Los Angeles on May 17, 2025 . This destination dreamers delight will traverse over 36,700 nautical miles, visiting 46 destinations in 24 countries and six continents. The voyage includes visits to historic Bar, Montenegro and Taranto, Italy , along with inaugural World Cruise calls to the idyllic Greek Island of Patmos and to Volos – for the Monasteries of Meteora .

The revised World Cruise itinerary, from February 16-April 9 , departs Sydney and will travel to Melbourne and Perth , then on to South Africa . From there, the cruise resumes the scheduled itinerary starting in Valletta, Malta on April 9 .

Following is the amended portion of the voyage:

Those guests scheduled to originally depart or join the cruise from Dubai on March 14, 2025 , will now embark or disembark four days earlier on March 9 , in Cape Town, South Africa . Booked guests disembarking in Cape Town will be refunded the amount equivalent to four days of the cruise fare and those joining earlier will not incur an added cost to their cruise fare. All these guests will also receive a $300 onboard credit as a gesture of good will.

Crown Princess World Cruise Departing from Down Under, Crown Princess - the largest ship to ever host a World Cruise - is scheduled to depart Auckland May 31, 2025 ; and Sydney June 4, 2025 ; and sail on a 113-day adventure visiting 42 destinations in 22 countries, across five continents. This cruise will also bypass the Red Sea and surrounding region, including the transit of the Suez Canal . The ship will travel via Africa instead of the Red Sea and Asia itinerary. The fully revised itinerary is currently being finalized and will be communicated shortly.

4 months at sea? Princess Cruises releases details about 2026 world tour

Want to travel the world? Have the stomach to spend one-third of the year at sea?

If the answer to both of those questions is yes, and you have $20,000 to spend, Princess Cruises has the trip of a lifetime for you.

The cruise line has released details about an upcoming world cruise that will visit 52 ports in 28 countries, spanning six continents and traveling 35,000 nautical miles.

The 2026 Princess World Cruise is a 114-day voyage aboard the Coral Princess, a nearly 1,000-foot cruise ship with room for about 2,000 passengers.

The massive globe-trotting cruise takes ships off from two U.S. ports — Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Jan. 5, 2026 and from Los Angeles on Jan. 21, 2026.

The 2026 cruise will visit the most destinations ever for a Princess cruise ship, but tickets don’t come cheap. Entry level reservations start at around $20,000 but go up depending on your preferred accommodations.

But if booked before Oct. 31 of this year, travelers will receive a free “Princess Premier Package” that comes with WiFi, premium alcoholic beverages, once-weekly specialty dining, unlimited “casual dining,” unlimited fitness classes and reserved theater seating — among other perks.

Princess says those early bookings also come with onboard credits, special discounts and free transfers from local airports.

Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer for Princess Cruises, says the company’s world cruises address growing demand for longer cruises that stop in more “exotic destinations.”

“Our 2026 World Cruise offers our most destination-rich itinerary ever so guests can immerse themselves in a global experience rich with landmarks, ancient ruins, unique landscapes, wildlife, gastronomy, cultures and heritage,” Thornton said in a news release.

The 2026 World Cruise will stop at several destinations that Princess has never visited, including Boracay, Philippines; Puerto Chiapas, Mexico; and Ponta Delgada, Portugal.

The cruise will spend more time at some popular ports, including Singapore; Sydney, Australia; and Honolulu, Hawaii, as well as one overnight stay in Hong Kong. The full 52-destination trip will provide access to 45 UNESCO World Heritage Sites around the globe.

The cruise line says destination-specific events and entertainment will be provided throughout the trip.

Full itineraries and booking information for the 2026 Princess World Cruise can be found online . Those who want to tag along but are unable to join for the entire journey can book cruise segments that come with shorter sailing times.

The 2024 World Cruise is a 111-day journey aboard the Island Princess which shipped off from Los Angeles in mid-January. Next year’s U.S.-based world cruise is the longest ever at 116 days. Princess also offers world cruises that depart from Australia later in the year.
