We left the uniqueness of this property. It is truly a hidden gem. This family owned business knocks it out of the park when it comes to hospitality. We loved our tent and the views are simply amazing. The staff makes it perfectly clear they are there too get you anything you need to make your stay the absolute best. I cannot say enough good things about this property. We will definitely be back sooner than later to enjoy this lovely property. Big shout out to Chase who wore many different hats and treated us like royalty. Such a nice guy and so helpful.

I t is amazing, super clean, gorgeous view, excellent experience

Everything from the tent to the lake, the restaurant, the beautiful view

Beautiful secluded location, fun things to do, friendly staff, gorgeous accomodations

I loved staying here and will definitely be staying again. The location is gorgeous and the tents had windows in the ceiling so you could lay in bed and look at the stars (which were amazing). The grounds were gorgeous and expansive. We walked around and did some hiking in the National Forest surrounding the resort. The staff was so nice and helpful. We only stayed the weekend....but I wish we had stayed longer. It was nice to get away for a while (cell service was patchy...but wifi was available at the front desk lobby area).

It was awesome to see the stars in our tent and the views were amazing. Our server was very pleasant and the rest of the staff were nice as well.

Great accommodations, friendly staff, pretty view. We stayed the eve before we took the Grand Canyon Railroad. it worked out great.

The setting was exceptional and the staff incredibly nice. Everyone went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible.

Remote location was so beautiful and peaceful and the facilities were definitely high luxury glamping, and only short drive from nearby cities and grand canyon. Wish we had more time to stay. Staff was great and left us smore kits to enjoy because we got in a little late.

The lodges are beautiful - spacious and elegant as well as comfortable. We had a family of five in one tent and there was plenty of room for everyone with all their luggage etc.

travel backland

With great anticipation, we drove along the gravel forest service road into the wilderness to Backland’s eco-luxury resort for our glamping experience. I waited for months to unplug and disconnect at this eco-resort.

Five years ago, I began solo camping. No tent for me, though. I slept in my SUV and purchased comfortable gear for such adventures. I loved visiting Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California to observe and photograph the night sky.

Last year, I upgraded my car camping to glamping in a covered wagon , which was a step up from car camping. Camping fulfills my midlife crisis but glamping is so much better!

Backland offers the best glamping in Arizona if you’ve been thinking about glamping at eco-resorts. They’ve thought of everything to make your stay comfortable, relaxing, and enjoyable.

Backland hosted me on this visit. However, all opinions are my own.

Where Is Backland Glamping Resort

On a hidden ranch about 20 miles southeast of Williams, Arizona, Backland resides on 160 acres of private land. Surrounded by the Kaibab National Forest and the largest ponderosa pine forest in the world, this luxurious glamping experience is ideally situated for quiet, connecting with nature, and reconnecting with loved ones. Yet, it is close to exciting destinations like the Grand Canyon, Sedona, and Flagstaff for daytime entertainment.

Breakfast in Backland, Williams, Arizona

Let’s talk about tent construction. Built to stay taut and not flap in the wind, the tents are fully insulated with high-efficiency heating, air conditioning, and automatic climate control.

Parking right by your tent is a plus. Transporting luggage to your tent is easy.

There are enough electrical outlets to keep all your devices charged, even though we were expecting to disconnect.

Ensuite Bathroom

The ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower and water conservation fixtures rivals upscale hotel rooms in any big city. Add the bounty of thick white towels, and it’s pretty luxurious. Quality ecological toiletries are provided.

I enjoyed cozying up in a fluffy white robe. Need I say more?

King-Size Bed

The king-size bed with luxury linens speaks volumes for this eco-resort. We were in a skyview tent with a glass skylight over the bed. The full moon lit our room in its travel across the night sky.

The 16-foot-wide panoramic sliding glass doors on the front wall of the tent gave us an unobstructed view of the meadows, pine forest, and lake. We felt immersed in nature.

With more than 75 feet between tents and sound-dampening insulation, we didn’t hear our neighbors.

Farm-To-Table Dining

Enjoy gourmet meals inside or outside on the patio in the reception building.

Dining at Backland was such a pleasurable experience. The farm-to-table cuisine delivered to our table by knowledgeable waitstaff was memorable. The produce was fresh and the menu was creative. The breakfast and dinners, made to order, were delicious.

While you might think plastics and disposables are camping requirements, Backland uses compostable plates, utensils, and glassware. Backland doesn’t use dishwashers and saves many gallons of water every day.

In the afternoon, we received a text asking when we would like to reserve our place for dinner. It was personal and attentive.

Spa And Yoga

The spa tent has two massage tables where you can schedule massages for two or other spa services where herbs and botanicals come from the Backland property.

Reserving a massage and participating in a complimentary yoga session by the pond takes average glamping to a much higher level.

Keeping with eco-luxury, lighting on the paths to the reception building and tents comply with dark sky conditions. Arizona has the most Dark Sky Communities in the nation.

If you drive an electric vehicle, you will be happy to know that Backland provides an electrical vehicle charging station by the reception building.

Backland Resort in Williams, Arizona

Things To Do

You can do any or all of these when you are on a glamping vacation at Backland. I particularly enjoyed kayaking. It was a milestone in my adventure career.

Watch The Sunrise From Bed

If you’ve closed the shades, roll them up so you can see the splendor of the morning light or step out onto the patio while enjoying the first cup of coffee for the day.

Kayak On The Lake

Hop on a paddleboard or use one of the brightly colored kayaks pulled up onto the sandy beach for a paddle around the lake. You might see snakes sunning themselves on the rocks.

With over two miles of trails on Backland property, paved with wood chips, take a refreshing walk or run. Visit the original homestead, which may be placed into service in the coming years.

Outside Activities

Complimentary use of sports equipment, books, games, and even sleds for winter snow fun, can be checked out at the reception building. They’ve thought of everything!

What I enjoyed most was watching the kids play indoor board games with their parents and siblings in the dining room. I also enjoyed when they were outside building sandcastles on the beach.

I asked Clare, the tiny 4-year-old guest digging in the beach sand under her mother’s watchful eye, what her favorite activity was. She said, “making sandcastles.” Clare’s 11-year-old sister, Emily, said she liked kayaking best and all the board games inside.

I have to admit, my favorite activity was kayaking, too. The lake was so calm and the kayak so sturdy, that I overcame my fear of the sport and was reluctant to return to shore and hand over the paddle.

Wil Lewis, another young guest, said his favorite activity was s’mores after dark. He was so happy because he could make s’mores two nights in a row.

You can play outdoor games like tetherball, volleyball, and corn hole that are right outside the reception and the dining room. I must warn you this is not just child’s play.

Try your hand at fishing with complimentary fishing poles. While the lake is currently not stocked, there’s something about casting a line in the water and watching the appealing float bob.

The staff organized scavenger hunts with geo-caching for the kids. While I didn’t see the hunt, I heard from the young guests how much fun it was.

All the activities are close to the reception building, making it easy to access after dark and keeping the space around the tents quiet. From roasting s’mores over the firepit to stargazing with the telescope, wrapping up with a star-spangled walk along the lit pathway to your luxury room is the perfect day’s end at Backland.

Stylish and cushy couches face the lake on the patio and provide a comfortable place for quiet conversations or reading in the sun. Two lounge chairs with a small table on the side of the patio also make a nice meeting place with a view for couples or solo travelers. While Backland is a great place for families with children, my husband and I enjoyed the luxury and location for just the two of us.

Connect With Nature

Connect with nature by bird watching with the complimentary use of binoculars and a bird guide.

Listen to coyotes in the distance as you watch the sunset over the lake or borrow a book from the library at reception. They have many to choose from.

Things To Do Off-Site

If you want to leave Backland for the day, here are some suggestions for things to do in Williams, the Grand Canyon, and Sedona.

Pro Tip: Consider visiting Sedona before your Backland experience because I promise you won’t want to leave once you get to Backland.

Grand Canyon Railway

You can have breakfast at Backland then head into Williams for the Grand Canyon Railway experience that includes almost three hours at the south rim of the Grand Canyon. You’ll be back in time for dinner at Backland.

Grand Canyon Deer Farm

The Grand Canyon Deer Farm is close to the Backland turnoff from Highway 40. The farm is the most fun hands-on animal experience I’ve ever had. You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy this.

Bearizona is the perfect place to view wildlife in natural environments. The walk-through experience allows you to stroll through winding walkways and get up close to jaguars, grizzly bears, and smaller animals. You must stay in your vehicle for the drive-through experience.

Elephant Rocks Golf Course

Have breakfast at Backland then take your golf clubs to Elephant Rocks Golf Course in Williams. This championship course is nestled amongst the ponderosa pines with giant lava rocks at the entrance resembling elephants.

Historic Route 66

A visit to Williams wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Route 66 Museum & Gift Shop . Many neon signs decorate the downtown with memorabilia exhibited throughout the town.

I ate at the Red Raven Restaurant midday and had a healthy wrap sandwich. Red Raven would be an ideal place to have lunch while you are in town.

Sedona is known for its art, shopping, and mystical influence.

Red Rock State Park

Learn about the scenic wonders and outstanding recreational opportunities in the park. See exhibits and environmental education services about the local geology, the human influence on Verde Valley, and seven biotic communities in the area.

Bell Rock Vista & Pathway

Bell Rock is a butte north of the village of Oak Creek. It’s a famous landmark with panoramic views. A hike up Bell Rock is fun, especially for kids.

Trolley Ride

An open-air trolley ride provides lively narration if you want something less strenuous than a hike up Bell Rock.

Pro Tip: Traffic can be heavy in Sedona and Oak Creek. Bring your patience in the afternoon.

Tent at Backlands Resort in Williams, Arizona

Things To Consider

Mosquitos were not a problem when I was at Backland in the fall. However, they have all-natural mosquito bye-bye wipes that are aromatic with 100 percent natural oils that are safe for the whole family.

Water

Water is shipped in for all consumption, so conservation is a priority at Backland. Because of their rigorous water-saving measures, they can utilize the existing septic system. I appreciated the awareness that it brought to my time there.

Backland provides a pitcher of water (with a cover) on request for your tent rather than bottled water.

Handicapped Accessible

Backland welcomes and accommodates people with disabilities. Tent #1 is expertly adapted for wheelchair use. Pavers in front of the tent for parking and the low front door jamb provide an accessible entrance and exit. In addition, the brick pavement wraps around the tent for patio accessibility.

The handicap-accessible tent has a roll-in shower and a roll-under bathroom sink. The towel rack design makes the towels easy to reach. Area rugs are eliminated and a height-adjusted twin bed is conveniently close to the bathroom and entry door.

Handicapped parking with pavers at the reception and dining room allows the whole Backland eco-resort experience for all guests.

Allow yourself to succumb to the Backland experience. If you only have a two-day weekend, don’t leave the property. Live and deeply experience all that Backland has to offer. It’s a simple encounter with immeasurable results.

The plight of people who are displaced from their homes due to war and persecution is top of mind for many. Now through the end of December, you can do something to help . Something that requires only a couple of nights at a luxury eco-resort on 160 acres of private land in Arizona.

All guests who book two or more nights at Backland Luxury Camping outside Williams, Arizona can support Heal , a small volunteer family-run nonprofit that helps settle refugee families in the U.S. To date, Heal has helped five families from Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Venezuela.

The eco-resort has glamping tents boasting giant panoramic windows, king-sized beds with luxury linens, outdoor patios, and a luxurious en-suite bathroom and shower. Each of the 10 distinct glamping tents is at least 75 feet away from each other, ensuring that each guest can enjoy true privacy and quiet. Huge 16-foot panoramic windows let in the sun and offer views over the open space, and the skyview tents have glass skylights set directly over the bed so you can stargaze as you drift off to sleep .

It goes without saying that in this corner of the world, the landscape is open and vast. Backland is set on 160 acres of private land that’s surrounded on all sides by a national forest — and the night skies are dark, quiet, and full of stars. (Backland is 45 minutes from Flagstaff, Arizona, which is the world’s first International Dark Sky Place .) Backland’s crème-de-la-crème is the Grand Sky Suite , which has a 16-foot window over the bed and sleeps up to six people.

All of Backland’s tents are fully insulated with climate control and electricity. There’s also onsite dining in a glass-walled restaurant with a fireplace and a covered beachfront patio. Breakfast is complimentary, while hearty boxed lunches and gourmet made-from-scratch dinners come at an additional cost. Massages are on tap in the tented spa, which is set in a ponderosa pine forest.

Those looking to get out and explore will find walking trails crisscrossing the property, a pond with a beach, and a volleyball court. Backland has several native plant and pollinator gardens, including a milkweed garden for monarch butterflies, an apiary that produces honey used onsite, and native orchards.

Further afield, Backland guests can make the direct, one-hour drive to Grand Canyon National Park or visit one of the many nearby natural attractions, including Sycamore Falls, Wupatki National Monument, Sunset Crater Volcano, and Walnut Canyon National Monument.

To use your stay at Backland for good, book at least a 2-night stay before Dec. 31, 2023, and enter the promo code STAYFORGOOD at checkout. In addition to knowing that two percent of the proceeds from your stay will go directly to Heal, the package also includes a free restaurant credit. Guests booking 2 nights get a $75 restaurant credit, while those booking three and four nights get $115 and $150, respectively.

After the package closes at the end of December, Backland will close for the winter and re-open in March 2024 for the spring and summer seasons.

Overview of Backland Glamping near the Grand Canyon

Nestled in Arizona’s scenic landscape in Williams, Arizona and only an hour and a half from Grand Canyon National Park, Backland is a luxury eco resort featuring 10 spacious glamping tents that blend comfort with environmental stewardship. Emphasizing the power of meaningful outdoor encounters, Backland invites guests to unplug, breathe in fresh air, and stargaze while enjoying comfortable, sustainable lodging.

travel backland

Backland, true to its name, is located in a remote area of the Kaibab National Forest about a half hour drive southeast of downtown Williams, Arizona.

The last 8 miles of the drive to Backland is on maintained dirt forest service roads. Any vehicle should be able to make the drive without issue in normal conditions, but do pay attention to road conditions and call the resort if you have any concerns during the drive.

travel backland

Backland recommends downloading a third-party app with audio-guided instructions to get to the resort, but if, like us, you prefer to minimize your cell phone apps, you can easily navigate your way to Backland via the Google Map directions linked on their website’s Location page. The main thing to pay attention to is that you should NOT turn right onto Forest Service Rd 18 off of Garland Prairie Road, even if Google prompts you to. This will lead you to a locked gate. Instead, follow the directions as shown in the map below and turn onto Forest Service Rd 18 from Rosalida Springs Rd.

Glamping Tent Options at Backland

Backland offers 4 different suite options in their glamping tents.

  • Backland Suite: Sleeps up to 4 with a king bed and queen sofa bed
  • Sky Suite: Same as a Backland Suite, plus a 16-foot skylight over the bed for stargazing
  • Grand Suite: Sleeps up to 6 with a king bed, queen sofa bed, twin bed, and rollaway bed
  • Grand Sky Suite: Same as Grand Suite, plus a 16-foot skylight over the king bed for stargazing.

Sky Suite Review

We stayed in a Sky Suite (Tent #5 to be exact). The glamping tent features a comfortable king-sized bed beneath a 16-foot long skylight. This was our favorite feature of our tent. Tim and I both caught a few shooting stars from the comfort of bed during our stay! Plus, as someone who tends to have night sweats, I appreciated the breathable bedding. Rarely do I find a hotel bed with comforters and sheets that prevent me from sweating overnight, so this was a big plus in my book.

travel backland

The tent also features a Kuerig coffee and tea area (with pods, mugs and creamers provided), a microwave, pull-out sofa, living room table, desk and chair, and bedside end tables.

travel backland

The bathroom has a sink, shower, toilet, and closet for resetting the electric hot water. One thing to note is that we did have issues with the hot water heater during our stay, which took over an hour to resolve with the help of Backland staff. Part of the adventure of glamping is being prepared to be flexible. While Backland is a luxury glamping stay, it is nevertheless glamping .

The bathroom is equipped with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, but you might want to bring your own conditioner, if, like me, you are prone to tangles. Towels and washcloths (including darker ones for makeup, dirt, etc.) are also provided.

travel backland

The tent is climate-controlled, with remote-operated heating and cooling units. We had no issues with the heat during our November stay!

The far end of the tent features floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors that open out to a lovely patio overlooking the forest. Our patio had two chairs and a sun lounger. This was a perfect spot to enjoy the sunrise! Oh, and don’t worry about unwanted light coming in in the mornings. There are separate privacy and blackout curtains on the windows/doors so you can let in as much or as little light as you’d like!

Amenities and Activities

  • Stargazing: In addition to skylights in the Sky Suites, Backland also offers complimentary telescopes available at reception to enhance your stargazing experience.
  • Spa: You can request a massage from the spa during your visit.
  • Pond and beach: An excellent spot to watch the sunrise, the pond and beach outside of reception have ample spots to lounge, yard games, fishing poles, and kayaks.
  • Fire pit and s’mores: In the evenings, there are complimentary s’mores by the fire pit outside of reception.
  • WiFi: WiFi is free and available in reception only.

Restaurant and Meals

The onsite restaurant at Backland features seasonal and local ingrediants. The complimentary breakfast features fresh fruit, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, cereal, granola, and a build-your-own crepe station. Juices, coffee, and water are also available.

Backland’s restaurant also offers a decadent cooked-to-order dinner (additional cost), and boxed lunches to fuel your adventures to nearby destinations like the Grand Canyon or Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon.

Final Thoughts on Grand Canyon Glamping at Backland

For a tranquil natural environment near popular day-trip destinations in Arizona like the Grand Canyon, Page, and Flagstaff, Backland is a unique glamping option that invites guests to embrace the great outdoors without sacrificing comfort.

Backland Glamping What to Expect Now | 2024

UPDATED January 13, 2024 — I was thrilled with my recent glamping experience, and so I want to share with you about glamping what to expect …from chef-prepared meals to finding tranquility in the Great Outdoors.

Table of Contents

Pinterest graphic that reads" Glamping What to Expect" with pic of glamping tent and patio furniture

So have you ever invited a friend or family member to go camping? And their response was, “Meh, not so much. Camping isn’t my thing.”

Well, I’m here to tell you that Backland and other glamping resorts are places where your two souls can unite:

  • Sleep in a tent…but this luxury tent is ooh la la!
  • Roast marshmallows over the campfire…after a chef-prepared feast in the Backland restaurant.
  • Crawl into the sack…under hotel linens and a fluffy comforter. (And ensuite bathroom.)

The stars are amazing here in the middle of nowhere. And the only sounds to hear are the geese honking as they land in the lake out front and the happy sigh of your glamping partner as they turn out the bedside lamp.

“What?! A lake in Arizona ?” you might ask. Well, come along with me on my most recent adventure, and I’ll show you!

Where are glamping resorts?

wooden dock reaches from sand beach to lake with pine trees on the opposite shore; its one of the things glamping what to expect at Backland

Self-help and mindfulness gurus say that “it’s about the journey, not the destination,” and I have to say that the journey to Backland, a glamping eco-resort, was, indeed, a rewarding part of my latest adventure. The windy roads through tall pine trees and the turns onto remote Forest Service roads made me feel as if I were driving into the middle of nowhere. (I’d printed the directions from the Backland website and had no problem finding my way into the hinterlands.)

The journey helped get me into a peaceful, relaxed state as I slowed down, took long breaths of pine-spiced air from my open window and watched for Arizona wildlife along the way. (More on what animals I saw out my windshield later.) We could all use more getaways from our hectic itineraries.

Glamping resorts are located all over the US, from the Smokey Mountains to Yosemite. The nation’s newest glamping resort is located 20 miles southeast of Williams, Arizona, in the Kaibab National Forest. Only 90 minutes from Grand Canyon National Park , the glamping resort makes a good launchpad for day trips to the Grand Canyon, Sedona or Flagstaff .

This destination promised to be more than the journey

sign reading in part, "Backland - 2 miles" next to gravel road with tall pines lining it on thae way to glamping what to expect

With my elbow stuck out the window and the wind in my hair, fence posts and the Kaibab National Forest trees flashed by, making me feel that I was in another world.

But when the trees parted, making way for the prairie, I slowed to make the righthand turn into Backland and drove through the barbed wire fence gate. It was there that I knew that the destination was someplace special. Inevitably, the destination—in this case—promised to be more than the journey.

Backland is a new glamping resort built on the footprint of a historic homestead ranch wholly surrounded by national forest land. Sustainable-minded owners carefully planned and built the eco-resort with minimal impact on the land. Sustainability and low impact are part of glamping trends 2022.

“We’re maximizing the opportunity to feel like you are in a remote location,” owner Jeremy Budge told me later. The luxury glamping resort opened on September 1, 2022.

I parked at the lodge, remembering that I could use the contactless check-in process. But I wanted to introduce myself and get to know the people that ran this backwoods operation. Next to my parking space, a young woman gathering kindling for the evening campfire looked up from under a tall Ponderosa pine tree that emitted a smell like nutmeg.

Glamping what to expect: Complimentary electric vehicle charging stations

“Hi, I’m UNSTOPPABLE Stacey Wittig, checking in to do a story about Backland,” I said, standing next to two complementary electric car charging stations. “The receptionist is in the lodge,” she greeted me, pointing to the entrance.

I walked from the stone-lined gravel parking lot over a woodchip walkway to the building of contemporary architecture. Thoughtful landscaping of native plants welcomed me.

Floor-to-ceiling glass brings the outdoors in

When I first stepped over the threshold into the lodge, a dark, modernistic fireplace with a light, rough concrete hearth caught my eye. It rises in the middle of the story-and-a-half building that houses the reception area, gathering spaces, chef’s kitchen and dining area. Three walls of floor-to-ceiling windows bring the outdoors in.

Nicole, the receptionist, welcomed me to Backland. “Out on the beach are kayaks and beach toys that are free to use. Here inside, we have binoculars for watching the waterfowl, a telescope for stargazing and a library of books and games.” I was beginning to understand that maybe a two-night stay would not be enough to experience all there was to be had at Backland.

“I believe that you are in Tent 5,” she said. “You should have received a text with your room code, but if not, I can give it to you,” Nicole smiled. I loved it that I wouldn’t have to worry about keys while glamping. The keyless entry was secured by a five-digit code.

Glamping what to expect in Tent 5, my Sky Suite

travel backland

From the contemporary lodge, I drove to Tent 5 and parked at my own stone-lined parking space. The gravel crunched under my feet as I unloaded my 4Runner. Again I noticed the newly planted landscaping, which gave a nice touch to the “campsite.” My tent, custom-built and designed by Jeremy, was set on a polished concrete slab. Neighboring tents were 75 feet away, so I didn’t feel like I was in a campground with people camped all over each other. I liked the privacy outdoors and couldn’t wait to see what was inside.

A sneak peek inside a glamping tent

white canvas walls frame huge panaramic window with sliding glass doors, couch, bathroom, mirror and bureau

My private glamping tent was as large as any upscale hotel room. The minimalistic design incorporated natural fiber rugs, baskets and natural wood. Stained and sealed concrete floors gave a clean look to the space enveloped in cream-tinted canvas. An abundance of natural light came from the 8-foot tall windows and 16-foot wide skylight.

The king-sized guest bed is positioned right under the skylight for a ceiling of stars throughout the night. In the morning, the sliding glass doors and wall of windows in front of the bed deliver more of the nature experience. You can lay in bed with your coffee and watch the birds swooping in the meadow.

Unlike typical glamping tents, the canvas in my Sky Suite doesn’t flap in the wind. That’s because of the thoughtful design by owner Jeremy Budge. Instead, natural-stained light oak stays to hold the canvas in place. I appreciated the minimalistic design feature of the black anodized screws against the light oak. They picked up the black used in the 16-foot expansive panoramic windows with walk-out sliding doors, the gooseneck floor lamp, the bathroom trim, and dressing mirrors.

Water-saving features

The spacious ensuite bathroom boasts a walk-in shower, conservation sink faucet and low-flow toilet, all of which reduce water consumption without impacting the guest experience. In addition, I loved the Nebia water-saving showerhead by Moen so much that I bought one for my bathroom when I got home. The state-of-the-art design uses atomization, breaking water into tiny droplets to create a spa-like sensation while conserving water, which is precious here in Arizona.

Are glamping tents warm?

Glamping tents are warm, especially when they are heated with energy-efficient heat pump technology. The new ThinQ heating and air conditioning units used in Backland glamping tents keep you warm and toasting in the cooler months and cool in the summertime.

The thick ceiling of insulation keeps you warm and has the added benefit of insulating you from the sounds of your neighbors. This is glamping what to expect from glamping is a unique combination of comfort control and open views of remote locales.

Gourmet dinner at Backland, the glamping resort

travel backland

French-trained Chef Jarrett Parten introduced me to two dishes I’d never sampled. I was fortunate enough to dine in the Backland lodge on two occasions and was surprised each time by French preparations.

Sabayon, a custard dessert

The first was sabayon, the French name for the Italian dessert zabaglione, made of egg yolk, sugar and wine. However, sabayon  is made with Marsala wine, while the zabaglione ingredient is typically different.

Dauphinoise potatoes

The second French creation new to me was dauphinoise potatoes cooked in cream. Landa, the chef’s wife and my amiable server, revealed that her daughter loved them so much that they were on the menu for her wedding reception.

I enjoyed breakfast and dinner at Backland, but I want to return once they have their liquor license to sample Chef Jarrett’s wine selections. I’m sure they will be fabulous.

As a water conservation measure, the dining room has no dishwasher. Instead, Backland saves hundreds of gallons of water daily using compostable plates, napkins and flatware. The dishes made from fallen palm leaves, forks, spoons and knives are recycled in the compost.

Expect an immersive experience at Backland

red foliage in forground, glamping tent behind with dawning sun shining on its creamy walls and panoramic windows

The immersive experience at Backland creates a feeling that you are IN nature, free from the negative aspects of camping. Depending on your tent selection, you’ll wake up with unobstructed views of the forest, prairie and the San Francisco Peaks, or lake.

You’ll rise warm, dry and comfortable out of fresh linens. And what’s more, the hotel-like bathroom is only a few steps away. Backland is genuinely a place where glamour and camping live as one.

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

A massive domed glass ceiling lines the top of the building and fills the interior with natural sunlight. There are live plants and flowers placed throughout the mall that give the shopping complex a lively and cheerful feel! A playful fountain sits in the center, further adding to the malls inviting a sense of wonder and amusement!

The GUM department store opened on December 2, 1893. Today, it includes local and luxury stores, including Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more! There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and even a movie theater inside!

GUM Department Store

For a special treat, head into Gastronom 1. This 1950s-style shop sells gourmet food items, like wine, freshly-baked pastries, cheese, Russian chocolate, and of course, vodka! Also, be on the lookout for a bicycle pedaling ice cream truck with an employing selling ice cream!

It’s also home to amusement rides and carousels, making it the perfect place to stop with kids on your Moscow itinerary! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and allow a few hours to explore all the areas that interest you!

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Bolshoi Theater

  • Why it’s awesome: The Bolshoi Theater is a historic venue that hosts world-class ballet and opera performances!
  • Cost: Prices vary largely between USD $2.00 –  USD $228.00 based on seat location.
  • Food nearby: Head to the Russian restaurant, Bolshoi for high-quality food and drinks and excellent service!

The Bolshoi Theater is among the oldest and most renowned ballet and opera companies in the world! It also boasts the world’s biggest ballet company, with more than 200 dancers!

The theater has been rebuilt and renovated several times during its long history. In 2011 it finished its most recent renovation after an extensive six-year restoration that started in 2005. The renovation included an improvement in acoustics and the restoration of the original Imperial decor.

The Bolshoi Theater has put on many of the world’s most famous ballet acts! Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake premiered at the theater in 1877 and other notable performances of the Bolshoi repertoire include Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker!

Bolshoi Theater

Today, when you visit the theater, you can expect a magical performance from skilled singers, dancers, and musicians with the highest level of technique!

If you don’t have time to see a show, the theater also provides guided tours on select days of the week. Tours are given in both Russian and English and will provide visitors with a more intimate look at the different areas of the theater!

The stage of this iconic Russian theater has seen many outstanding performances. If you’re a fan of the performing arts, the Bolshoi Theater is one of the greatest and oldest ballet and opera companies in the world, making it a must-see attraction on your Moscow itinerary!

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.
