4 Things to Know When Choosing a Travel Agent

Even the most D.I.Y.-inclined travelers are considering working with a professional adviser these days. Here’s how.

selecta travel

By Lauren Sloss

So, you’re thinking about traveling again? You’re not alone. The pandemic may not be over, but the expansion of vaccine eligibility in the United States — hiccups, delays and pauses aside — plus the news that the European Union will be opening up to vaccinated travelers is inspiring many to plan a real-deal summer vacation, or even take the leap on booking bucket-list adventures.

Travel remains far from simple, however. The virus is finding new footholds around the world, leaving an ever-changing set of rules and restrictions in its wake (and all of this is compounded by a run on home rentals , rental cars and more). It’s a reality that’s inspired many D.I.Y.-inclined travelers to consider working with a travel agent , or travel adviser, for the first time, in the hopes of skipping the travel-planning stress and focusing on actually relaxing on vacation instead.

Most travel advisers provide their services free of charge to clients (though some charge a booking fee, which can range from $25 to $100, depending on how complicated a trip you’re after) and instead make their money through commissions from hotels, tour operators, cruise lines, airlines and other travel companies.

Finding the right adviser for you is “like finding a hairdresser,” said Erika Richter, the senior communications director of ASTA , the American Society of Travel Advisors. “You want someone who understands your personal style.”

Ms. Richter, along with Misty Belles, the managing director of global public relations for Virtuoso , an international travel agency network specializing in luxury travel, shared their tips on how you can find an adviser who will understand you and your dream trip.

Begin your search close to home

Start by asking trusted friends and family members for recommendations. “The same holds true for any professional service in your life,” Ms. Belles said. “If you know someone who is working with a travel adviser and was pleased with the experience, that’s a great place to start.”

If that’s a no-go (or if your friends and family, while beloved, don’t have the same travel style as you do), Ms. Richter strongly suggested seeking out local businesses where you live.

“Supporting small businesses in our communities is more important than ever right now,” she said. ASTA has a directory that allows you to search for advisers close to you; a quick Google search will likely do the trick, too, Ms. Richter said.

Think about where you want to go

Another way to find a travel adviser is to seek one out based on a destination, or destinations, that he or she may specialize in. Are you interested in going to a specific Caribbean island nation? You’ll likely want to work with an adviser that has booked a number of trips in that country, and has connections and contacts there. Some advisers specialize in trips to Disney resort properties; others focus on cruises. If you’re interested in planning a trip outside of their purview, advisers can refer you to someone else within their network, or do the heavy-duty research themselves.

“Choosing someone who specializes in a destination is a good first foray into working with a travel adviser,” Ms. Belles said. “But when you work with the same adviser for a while, they become a specialist in you.”

Consider their professional networks

Speaking of what you want, it can be useful to understand the organization, or organizations, an adviser is associated with. Whether they work alone, with one partner in a small shop, or as part of a large agency, they are likely connected to a consortium, or a professional network, like Virtuoso, which is made up of more than 1,000 agencies in 50 countries around the world, or ASTA itself.

“Obviously, I represent ASTA, but I do think it’s important to look at an adviser’s professional affiliations,” Ms. Richter said. Affiliations can serve as a vote of confidence that the adviser has been vetted; it also gives you a chance for recourse should you find yourself unhappy with your relationship (ASTA, for example, can handle consumer complaints and be a part of the resolution process). Some consortiums specialize in a certain type of travel — Virtuoso agencies focus on luxury travel, for example, while others might highlight adventure travel, or family trips and so on.

An adviser’s affiliations also act as a conduit for one of their major selling points: traveler perks.

“Ask them what sorts of benefits they get from their professional networks,” Ms. Richter said. “Upgrades, free breakfasts, late checkouts when available — who doesn’t want some of those freebies?”

Make sure your adviser understands your travel style

Do you like leisurely, slow trips? Packed itineraries filled with sightseeing and attractions? Do you like to travel alone, or are you planning multigenerational trips with children and grandparents? Ensuring that your adviser understands what you want — and maybe even establishing that they have a similar travel style themselves — can greatly help with building rapport (and allow them to plan an even better trip for you).

Some important questions to ask: Do they charge a planning fee? What are some examples of trips that they’ve planned in the past?

“Be really upfront about your budget for a trip, and be sure that that is something they can help you make the most of,” Ms. Richter said.

Ms. Belles suggested asking the adviser how they personally like to travel, and some of their favorite destinations.

“Interview them a little bit! You can see whether there are some similarities there,” she said. But make sure they’re asking you just as many questions.

“If they’re not, that should be a red flag,” said Ms. Belles. “An adviser should be looking to get to the heart of what exactly you want as a traveler.”

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Travel (Airport/Railway) Catering Guide

Identifying and planning catering solutions for the railway and air travel industries can be a challenging task. Understanding the latest trends in technology and travelling preferences will ultimately inform how best to approach consumer requirements. In this guide, we’ll discuss the consumer, business and site considerations any catering manager must know when tailoring solutions for the transport and travel industry, as well as any technological, health and safety and sustainability considerations.

Transport & Travel Consumer Considerations

Before discussing how best to cater to a consumer base, it’s critical to understand who that consumer base is. People travelling via train or plane fall into one of two categories — leisure or business consumers. Every consumer has their own needs that need to be considered.

Leisure Consumer

Whether it’s attending events, seeing relatives or going on holiday, leisure consumers are travellers that are typically doing so for fun or personal reasons.

Businesses need to consider how a leisure consumer might engage with catering opportunities throughout their journey. It’s worth considering:

Willingness to spend — Leisure consumers are often more frivolous with their capital during travel — often as they’re already in the leisure spending mindset. It’s crucial for businesses to consider how they can capitalise on the increased spend — for example, offering gourmet and specialist catering options to entice consumers to buy at a higher price point.

Available time — Leisure consumers typically have more time on their hands. They typically arrive earlier and wait longer for their transportation, prolonging their exposure to a range of foods and products. Combined with a more liberal attitude to spending compared to business consumers, having more options available can pay dividends as they have more time to browse and weigh up food options.

Business Consumer

This category represents any consumer that travels for business or commercial reasons. They are typically characterised by their:

Lack of time — Whether it’s a connecting flight or train journeys for meetings and conferences, business travellers are often in a rush. This means their exposure to purchasing opportunities is limited so businesses should consider self-service, contactless machines to speed up the process. Also, businesses must consider a variety of dietary requirements and specialist foods and how they can be found and accessed.

Increased need for convenience — While travelling to and from work, business travellers and daily commuters need quick, fulfilling and tasty options if they’re on a tight schedule. Catering managers must consider how to offer a range of hot, cold, healthy or fast-food options that not only cater to a range of dietary preferences but are ready to eat on purchase.

Transport & Travel Site Considerations

When planning out how consumers will interact with catering technologies during travel, it’s important to consider the locations they’re placed in. Travel hubs tend to process a large volume of travellers per day, meaning many kiosks and shops must handle large influxes of people.

This is crucial because:

  • It improves consumer safety and limits the risk of injury from crowd surges.
  • With effective site traffic, shops and kiosks can process more consumers — increasing revenue.
  • When there are no long queues, consumer satisfaction also increases.

Availability and site coverage is an important aspect of how consumers interact with a site. This includes how many service points are accessible and the number and type of products available.

This is important because:

  • Consumers don’t want to have to trek across the travel hub to buy the products they want. This is especially important for larger travel hubs like airports or large inner-city railway stations.
  • Broad site coverage also reduces site traffic in key areas, making the travel hub easier and safer for consumers to traverse and staff to manage.
  • When services are plentiful, it increases the likelihood of consumers making split-second purchases, increasing profit potential.

Best Technology for Transport & Travel

Technology is an extremely important aspect of catering solutions for the transport & travel industries. With recent advances in technology — like contactless spending and micromarkets — the way we interact with food is changing. Here are three essential technologies:

Self-Service vending machines are another way to cut down on the time consumers spend purchasing food and increase revenue. They’re easy to use and businesses don’t require staff to take orders or facilitate payments. The only overheads come from cleaning, restocking and maintaining the machines. For more information on our self-service machines, check out our website!

Self-service vending machines

Smart Fridges are increasingly integrated within micromarkets — or used as a standalone solution — to house perishable goods. Smart fridges track the use-by dates of products and automatically lock to avoid distributing out-of-date goods, reducing the chances of customers falling ill. They also boast compartmental cooling to chill a variety of foods at different temperatures — keeping food fresher for longer. For more information on smart fridges, check out our site!

Smart Fridges

Micromarkets are the perfect way to offer a wide array of food options in a condensed environment. With visitors to airports generally turning away from more traditional forms of catering like restaurants, these easy-to-access micromarkets are perfect for quick and efficient service suitable for all consumers. To find out more, visit our Micromarkets page!

Micromarkets

Health & safety considerations.

Health & Safety is extremely important for travel hubs. With a high volume of people coming in and out every day, guaranteeing safety is paramount. Below are some considerations to keep in mind when ensuring the health & safety of consumers.

Everyone has different dietary requirements and preferences. Whether it’s a preference — like practicing vegetarianism and veganism — or allergies and intolerances, businesses must consider how they can offer a suitable variety of food when planning catering solutions. They must also consider how foods are labelled and displayed to be as accessible as possible.

There are strict rules and regulations when bringing liquids onto flights. Containers must be clear and hold no more than 100ml of liquid and must be placed in a re-sealable, transparent bag. Selling products that keep in line with these regulations is essential so that customers don’t have to throw away items when boarding a flight — increasing potential revenue.

Fire safety is another important aspect to consider. Businesses must consider how consumer traffic traverses self-service kiosks or micromarkets and how units are arranged to ensure access to fire exits and guarantee safety compliance.

Sustainability Considerations

Sustainability is an increasingly important metric for businesses to consider when designing catering stations in transport hubs. This might mean considering implementing environmentally friendly waste processing, monitoring energy use and lowering carbon footprints. Here are several factors to consider when making services more sustainable.

  • Food packaging is an important aspect of sustainability that needs to be addressed. Packaging needs to keep in line with airport regulations while also using as little materials as possible. Ideally, packaging should be biodegradable.
  • Businesses should consider upgrading to smart fridges in their travel hubs. Features like compartmental cooling help keep food fresh while simultaneously lowering energy use.
  • Vending machines should have power-saving or energy-monitoring functions to help notify staff how much is being used. Armed with this data, machines can be brought on and offline in response to the number of potential consumers present at any time.

Transport & Travel Catering Regulations

A few regulations govern catering for transport & travel, and one regulation must be adhered to above all else. Breaching this regulation could result in fines or worse.

Handling and Disposal of International Catering Waste

International Catering Waste (ICW) is all food waste from international transport vehicles, including cruise ships, airlines, private yachts, ferries armed forces ships and submarines.

Food waste is only considered international catering waste when it is thrown away and found alongside other international waste. For example, a bottle of orange juice is only considered ICW when thrown away.

ICW must be stored in a covered, leak-proof container and labelled clearly as ‘Category 1 – for disposal only’. Compactors can be used to reduce waste volume provided:

It’s kept in a covered area.

Any liquid runoff is controlled.

Areas contaminated by liquid runoff are cleaned and disinfected.

When a ship or truck full of ICW is brought to a processing centre, disposal must be called for immediately, and all containers holding ICW must be cleaned and disinfected. The owner of the shipment is responsible for its disposal.

These methods are taken to avoid the spread of potential contaminants across borders and comply with specific countries’ waste disposal laws.

At Selecta, we cater to several industries and can help tailour the best solutions to suit you. For more information on our range of products, get in touch !

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any restrictions on what food can be taken on planes.

Liquids must be stored in clear containers of no more than 100ml and must be sealed in a clear plastic bag. All food is allowed on planes, but it must be screened alongside any liquids before being allowed on board.

How Do I Know If Food Is Available On My Long Distance Train?

Some short-haul train journeys provide food for passengers. These services will either be advertised along with the ticket or service staff will notify passengers on board. Long distance, cross-country train services will almost certainly offer food.

Are Snacks Free in First Class on a Train?

Generally speaking, most services offer a complementary first-class meal for journeys of 7 hours or more. Though it’s highly recommended to contact the rail company to double check before the journey.

Moscow, Russia

You are here, about moscow.

Moscow is unlike any other city on Earth. It is the wealthy economic center for one-sixth of the world's land mass and has over 120 ethnic groups and nationalities. A diverse and vibrant city with a strange combination of traditional Russian architecture and newer Soviet tastelessness, Moscow is an adventure waiting to happen!

Reasons to travel to Moscow

But what makes it so popular among tourists is the concentration of Moscow attractions. When you travel to Moscow you definitely want to see the red-bricked walls of the Kremlin , to take a picture in front of St. Basil's Cathedral , and probably visit the world-famous Bolshoi Theater . All of these places are located within a very small area around Red Square , so seeing them on a walking sightseeing tour of Moscow is convenient and allows you to avoid traffic jams.

The concentration of Moscow's main sights is one of the facts that make this city a world-class tourist destination. The majority of its attractions is centered in one small area, and the Kremlin is the hub of this concentration.

These sights extend into the realm of fantasy and are a must to put on your Moscow itinerary: the colorful domes of the Cathedral of St. Vasily the Blessed, the neo-gothic consumer wonderland that is the GUM , or state department store, and the timepiece of Russia's New Year's celebrations, the Spassky clock tower, all tower over the beautiful Red Square.

The neighboring Kitay-Gorod, or "Basket-Town" (likely a reference to the construction method of the city walls surround it), remains a significant concentration of traditional Russian structures serving as a commercial center. The Bolshoi Theater, the Lubyanka, and the hotels that tower above the Manege Square all are situated within the Boulevard Ring, an urban open-space doubling as a heavily-trafficked roadway created after the Great Fire of 1812, the one that left Napoleon's Army starving deep within wintry Russia.

Moscow transport system

As Europe's largest metropolis, and the 5th largest city in the world, Moscow comes with its share of traffic blunders. It seems that all of the world's most expensive black cars are here, and that most of the city's car owners do not understand the difference between sidewalks and parking lots. Still, while the traffic situation leaves much to be desired, the Moscow subway is superb.

The advanced Metro system carries up to 3 million passengers a day and its trains run every few minutes. With stations that could rival art museums, the Metro is one of Moscow's great must-see sights. Travel in Moscow Metro at least once to see that there is nothing like it in the world.

Best time to visit Moscow

The peak of the Moscow travel season is May through September. However, you may prefer to savor Moscow tourism delicacies during the low travel season. The snowy winter months offer just as many entertainment options as one can find during summer.

You can celebrate New Year's Eve or see Russia's biggest ice rink on Red Square, taste blinis or visit one of the numerous winter markets. Any popular St. Petersburg - Moscow tour hides a handful of memorable experiences the whole year round!

Although the best time to visit Moscow is from May to September, the city in winter still enchants with its towers and lights. Its great celebrations on the day of the October Revolution (held on November 7, a discrepancy resulting from the difference between the traditional Russian Julian calendar and the Gregorian calendar in use around the world today), and New Years Day make it the place to be. Of course, the best way to plan your trip is through one of our package tours to Moscow. If you are planning a trip to Russia , don't hesitate to contact our experienced travel experts who'll be glad to help.

By CNT Editors

It’s inevitable: Every spring when we pull together the Hot List , our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants , and cruise ships , a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of traveling the globe—to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech, or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage—it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali. We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List hotel winners for 2024.

Here are the best-rated Priority Pass lounges in 2024

P riority Pass has revealed its best-rated airport lounges around the world — and you're definitely going to want to tick off a few of them on future trips.

Pulled together as part of the Priority Pass Excellence Awards, this roundup features the highest-rated lounges across the Priority Pass network , their rankings decided by 379,966 member ratings and reviews.

Related: 11 credit cards that offer Priority Pass airport lounge access

Each lounge is judged on a range of criteria, including quality of facilities, customer service, food and beverage selection, and overall satisfaction, with the awards recognizing best-in-class lounges both regionally and globally.

"We have a shared ethos with our partners to deliver the best airport experience to our members and the winners of this year's Priority Pass Excellence Awards have proven that they truly elevate every customer journey into something special," said Christopher Evans, president of Collinson International.

Here's a rundown of the lounges that received the best ratings for 2024.

Global and Europe

Winner: vienna lounge, terminal 1, vienna airport (vie) in austria.

The Vienna Lounge was refurbished in 2022 and is likely the slickest Priority Pass lounge we've ever visited, so it's no surprise that it received the best ratings in Europe and globally from visitors. It features hip art nouveau stylings, a beautiful Viennese cafe and top-tier food and drinks. And that's before we even mention the airy outdoor terrace with runway views and the artwork displayed throughout the lounge, which includes various works from renowned Austrian painter Gustav Klimt.

"The Vienna Lounge is all about symbolising impressive Vienna elegance and Austrian cuisine for travellers," said Julian Jäger, joint CEO and chief operating officer of Vienna Airport, in reaction to the win. "To be named Global Lounge of The Year amongst 1,500 other lounges and travel experiences is an outstanding confirmation of the quality of our services."

Highly commended (Europe): Marco Polo Club, Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) in Italy

The Save SPA-partnered Priority Lounge, Marco Polo Club, was also highly commended and recognized for its selection of hot and cold snacks, beverages, shower facilities, and other amenities. It's a worthwhile stop-off point if you're visiting Venice soon.

The Asia-Pacific region

Winner: chase sapphire lounge by the club, terminal 1, hong kong international airport (hkg).

This stylish Chase Sapphire Lounge covers 12,000 square feet and opened in October 2022. It features separate spaces for those traveling for business and pleasure, with dedicated areas for work and relaxation. Along with self-serve food and drink options, the lounge has an impressive array of signature cocktails, curated wines and made-to-order dishes.

Highly commended: Oriental Club Lounge, Terminal 2, Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE)

This lounge haven in Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is a perfect backdrop for travelers wanting to relax and enjoy freshly prepared (and delicious) Taiwanese delicacies during work downtime. You'll find a classy environment with grade-A service, food and drinks, and other amenities.

Latin America and the Caribbean

Winner: advantage vip lounge, curitiba afonso pena international airport (cwb) in brazil.

Priority Pass' standout offering in Brazil, the Advantage VIP Lounge, garnered great reviews for its excellent gastronomy experiences — which, along with regionally inspired menus, include delicious gluten-free options and frequent theme days that pay ode to Curitiba.

Highly commended: Macondo Lounge, Barranquilla Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport (BAQ) in Colombia

Also recognized was the Macondo Lounge in Colombia, which prides itself on its fully stocked selection of newspapers and magazines, friendly service and diverse seating areas.

The Middle East and Africa

Winner: petra lounge, amman queen alia international airport (amm) in jordan.

The Petra Lounge was ranked highly thanks to its warm and inviting front-of-house staff, great food and vast seating area decorated in modern Middle Eastern-influenced details that reference the region's rich culture.

Highly commended: Primeclass Lounge, Muscat International Airport (MCT) in Oman

The highly regarded Primeclass Lounge is not only a favorite of Priority Pass members but was also referenced in glowing terms repeatedly by members of the Priority Pass team when TPG recently asked for recommendations. The lounge features a sprawling open buffet, a gaming zone, a cinema, a spa and a kids play zone.

North America

Winner: vip lounge aguascalientes, aguascalientes international airport (agu) in mexico.

The VIP Lounge Aguascalientes topped the ratings across North America thanks to its vibrant food and drink services and comfortable, pet-friendly space.

Highly commended: Escape Lounge, South Terminal A, Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) in New York

Finally, the Escape Lounge at Syracuse Hancock International Airport also received a worthwhile nod, thanks, in part, to its highly praised seasonal menus, which are changed frequently throughout the year.

Credit cards that offer Priority Pass Select memberships

These are multiple credit cards through which you can get a Priority Pass Select membership.

These include not only premium travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , The Platinum Card® from American Express (enrollment required) and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card — which even includes two guests — but also hotel credit cards like the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card (enrollment required).

Bottom line

Priority Pass has just revealed the winners of its newly established Priority Pass Excellence Awards, which take into account ratings and reviews of lounges across its entire global network. For 2024, the standout Lounge of the Year award goes to the Vienna Lounge at Vienna Airport after it topped the global and European rankings.

Find the best credit card for you

Here are the 3 best chase balance transfer credit cards of 2024, save money with these chase credit cards that offer 0% introductory aprs on balance transfers..

thumbnail

Credit card interest rates are often higher than other financial products like personal loans or mortgages so it's best to pay off your credit card balance in full every month . However, that isn't always possible so many people may wind up with high-interest credit card debt. In these situations, taking advantage of a 0% balance transfer offer can reduce the interest you pay and help you pay off your credit card debt more quickly.

Chase is known for issuing some top travel credit cards , but it also has several cards that offer an intro 0% APR for balance transfers. Consider these Chase balance transfer credit cards if you're hunting for a balance transfer offer. (See our methodology for information on how we chose the best Chase balance transfer credit cards).

Best Chase balance transfer credit cards

  • Best for long intro APR: Chase Slate Edge℠
  • Best for cash back: Chase Freedom Unlimited®
  • Best for rotating bonus categories: Chase Freedom Flex℠

  • 3% foreign transaction fee
  • No rewards program

Who's this for? The Chase Slate Edge℠ does one thing, and it does it well — reduce the interest you pay. Its longer-than-usual introductory APR offer makes it ideal for those seeking more time to pay off their balance.

Balance transfer offer : New cardholders are eligible for an intro 0% APR on eligible balance transfers and purchases for 18 months from account opening, then a 20.49% to 29.24% variable APR applies. This is one of the longest intro APR offers available and is especially useful since it applies to purchases, too.

An intro balance transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer (whichever is higher) applies to transfers completed in the first 60 days of account opening. After that, the balance transfer fee is $5 or 5% of the amount of each transfer (whichever is higher).

More on our top Chase balance transfer credit cards

The Chase Slate Edge℠ is a no annual fee card with several features that can help you pay less interest, but doesn't earn rewards.

Get an automatic review for a higher credit limit when you pay on time and spend $500 in the first six months.

Notable perks

With the Chase Slate Edge , you are automatically considered for a 2% APR reduction if you pay your monthly bill on time and spend at least $1,000 on the card before your next account anniversary (terms apply). While you'll want a plan to pay off your balance transfer before the interest kicks in, this feature can help you lower your APR compared to what you might pay with other credit cards.

This card's insurance benefits include purchase protection, extended warranty protection, roadside dispatch and rental car collision and theft coverage (secondary in the U.S.).

[ Return to card summary ]

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is one of CNBC Select's top no-annual-fee cash-back credit cards with a unique intro bonus and a handful of useful benefits to complement its cash-back earnings.

  • 6.5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Travel
  • 5% back on Lyft rides (through Mar. 31, 2025)
  • 4.5% cash back on dining
  • 4.5% cash back at drug stores
  • 3% cash back on all other purchases (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year)

Earn an additional 1.5% cash back on everything you buy (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year).

Cardholders can earn 5% cash back on Lyft rides through March 2025 and enroll for three complimentary months of DashPass (activate by Dec. 31, 2024). Purchases are also covered by a range of built-in protections like rental car collision damage insurance (secondary in the U.S.), extended warranty coverage, purchase protection and trip cancellation and interruption insurance.

While this is a cash-back credit card , you can boost the value of the rewards you earn by pairing this card with a Chase card that allows points transfers (such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ). By transferring the rewards you earn to travel partners like World Hyatt, United MileagePlus and Air Canada Aeroplan, you can potentially book luxury hotels and flights for fewer points.

The Chase Freedom Flex℠ packs a punch with generous rewards in bonus categories that change every quarter and an easy-to-earn welcome bonus.

  • 5% cash back on the first $1,500 spent in categories that change each quarter, then 1% cash back (activation required)
  • 5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards®
  • 3% cash back on dining
  • 3% cash back at drug stores
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

Earn a $200 bonus after spending $500 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Cardholders receive discounts and special perks with partners like Lyft and DoorDash. There are also many valuable built-in protections for a no-annual-fee card, including:

  • Cell phone insurance
  • Rental car insurance (secondary in the U.S.)
  • Extended warranty coverage
  • Purchase protection
  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

When you have a Chase card that unlocks the ability to transfer Chase points to hotel and airline partners (like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card) , it increases the value of the Freedom Flex. So this isn't only a strong standalone rewards credit card , but it has synergies with other cards.

How to complete a Chase balance transfer

Chase typically charges a balance transfer fee from 3% to 5% with a $5 minimum. Before you complete a balance transfer , be sure the interest you save will outweigh the fee.

There are several ways to do a balance transfer with Chase. One of the best and easiest options is to complete a balance transfer when you apply for a card. When you do this, you'll be able to make the most out of your intro APR because any 0% interest timeframe you qualify for begins when you open the card.

If you want to perform a balance transfer with a Chase card you already have, you'll need to log in to your account and follow these steps:

  • Click "Pay & Transfer"
  • Then click on the "Transfer" dropdown menu
  • Select "Card balance transfers"

You can then select any of your Chase cards from a dropdown menu and see what balance transfer offers are available.

Are Chase balance transfers worth it?

When you make a balance transfer, you'll generally pay a fee of 3% to 5% of the balance. To determine whether a balance transfer is worth it, calculate how much you would save in interest compared to how much you'd pay in transfer fees.

What is one disadvantage of a 0% interest balance transfer card?

Aside from the balance transfer fees, the biggest downside to a balance transfer is you'll have the same amount of credit card debt as before. If you don't have a plan, or the resources, to pay off your debt before the intro APR expires, you'll be stuck paying interest once again.

Do balance transfers hurt your credit?

A balance transfer doesn't directly hurt your credit score and could help improve your credit if you're able to pay down your debt. However, you'll want to keep in mind that your credit score will temporarily dip when you apply for new credit (including a balance transfer card).

Bottom line

The top balance transfer cards Chase issues offer intro APR periods of 15 to 18 months, and these intro APR offers also apply to purchases, making them even more useful. If you're interested in paying less interest , these are some of the best offers available. When you're in credit card debt, your primary focus should be repayment, not earning rewards, but the fact that some of the cards on this list earn rewards is a nice bonus.

Our methodology

To determine which Chase cards are best for balance transfers, CNBC Select analyzed the Chase credit cards with intro APR balance transfer offers. We compared each card on a range of features, including the annual fee, rewards, welcome bonus and balance transfer fee. We also considered additional perks, consumer protections, the application process when available and how easy it is to redeem rewards. However, when you're in credit card debt, your priority should be repayment, so we focused more on the cards that provide consumers with the cheapest ways to pay off their debt rather than the number of rewards they could potentially earn.
