As a resident of nearly 10 years, I’ve explored many parts of the region so I’ve included something for everyone. All within an easy distance from Dubai.

Locations Driving Distance from Dubai

1. fujairah, uae.

fujairah beach with a view of snoopy island for a short trip from dubai

Known for its natural beauty and stunning clear blue sea water. This is the perfect spot for sea lovers where you can enjoy yacht trips, snorkelling and scuba diving. In particular, Snoopy Island is popular with visitors. It’s close enough to the shore to swim or kayak to the island.

Fujairah is still part of the UAE but a different Emirate so you won’t need to take your passport, just your Emirates ID for the hotel.

It is also home to one of the oldest mosques in the UAE, Al Badiyah Mosque, which was built around 1446 and is a lovely example of the humble architecture of the region at the time.

Distance: 122.7 km Driving time : 1 hour 15 minutes

2. Hatta, UAE

hatta lake

If you live in Dubai or the UAE and you haven’t yet been to Hatta, you’re missing out! This beautiful lake and surrounding mountains offer an ideal spot of natural beauty without ever leaving the Emirate of Dubai.

There are all sorts of outdoor activities here, from kayaking on the lake to hiking up the mountains. There are even bicycle hire shops and various different paths to bike based on your ability. It’s an ideal family-friendly location.

It’s best to visit during Dubai winter, my favourite month weather-wise is November for Dubai . Be aware that most of the places are closed during the summer months , such as the Hatta Wadi hub and that most activities are outdoors.

There aren’t that many hotels to choose from but Hatta Fort is a really popular choice in the area.

Distance: 134.7 km Driving time : 1 hour 22 minutes

3. Bateen Liwa, UAE

short travel from uae

Yet another destination within the UAE. You’ll be surprised by the lush oases contrasting the golden desert sand dunes, this part of Abu Dhabi offers the best of both worlds. Whether you want to do a desert safari or explore farmlands with date palms.

Bordering Saudi Arabia, the more remote location is perfect for those wanting to get away from city life and experience Bedouin culture. Though in true UAE style, you need not give up any of your luxury comforts by staying at A nantara’s 5 star Qasr Al Sarab .

Distance: 335 km Driving time : 3 hours 36 minutes

4. Khasab, Oman

short travel from uae

This gem is located on the peninsula at the very north of the UAE, heading through Ras Al Khaimah. You might have come close to here if you went the Al Dara route for a Dubai Visa Run .

Khasab is the capital of Musandam and here you can experience peaceful natural wadis or experience a traditional Dhow boat at sea. It’s even possible to take a ferry over to the main part of Oman if you’re wanting an extended adventure.

Regardless of what type of holiday you like, here you can get a chance to see dolphins swimming or experience authentic bedouin culture. If you want to do more adventurous mountain hikes it’s possible here too or you can enjoy a leisurely fishing trip. You’ll find fully authentic dhows here too, like the ones used to cross the Ocean for hundreds of years.

Distance: 197.2 km Driving time : 2 hours 30 minutes

5. Sir Bani Yas Island, UAE

short travel from uae

If you’re really looking for a unique experience, Sir Bani Yas Island is truly a bucket list item. Enjoy an animal safari on the island, watch the roaming Arabian Oryx, Giraffes knawing on leaves and cheetahs roaming the landscape.

Located around 2 hours away from Abu Dhabi, this is another option that isn’t too far away but will really make you feel like you’ve been transported to another land without needing your passport.

If you wish to actually stay on the island, the only resorts are both owned by Anantara . Alternatively, you can stay at more affordable nearby hotels on the mainland and take an excursion to Sir Bani Yas. The choice is yours!

Distance: 362 km Driving time : 3 hours 23 mins

6. Nurai Island, UAE

short travel from uae

Another island option is the fabulous Nurei Island , also off the coast of Abu Dhabi. You’ll be greeted with a glass of champagne or a none alcoholic drink if you choose, while waiting for the speed boat to take you to the island.

Villas have their own private pools and you’ll find a wide range of luxury accommodations. It is on the more expensive end for a weekend away but you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to your own tropical island getaway.

It’s located just off the coast of Abu Dhabi, so you won’t even need to travel that far. Perfect for those who don’t want to do a lot of driving but feel like they’ve travelled somewhere with a very different feel. It was also featured on The Real Housewives of Dubai .

You can also buy a day pass to the Island if you’re not wanting to fully splurge for a villa.

Distance: 129 km Driving time : 1 hour 8 minutes

7. Nizwa & Jabal Al Akhdar, Oman

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Danni B | Travel | Revert (@danniinthedesert) on Jun 6, 2020 at 8:34am PDT

This destination takes around 5 hours to drive to Jebel Akhdar from Dubai, so it’s perfect for those wanting a low-cost vacation for the whole family. Along with being a short road trip from Dubai. There are different styles of hotels to suit your budget including bedouin style tents.

There are even camping spots if you have your own camping gear. Just make sure to take warm sleeping bags and a heater or buy wood for a campfire. As it does get pretty cold in the night time, especially in the winter months. It can be up to 10 degrees colder than sea level.

There are two stunning luxury five-star hotels to choose from, Anantara Jabal Al Akhdar and Alia Jabal Akhdar, on the very top of the mountain. There are also affordable camp style hotels. The camping spots have incredible views of the stunning valleys of Oman. The most incredible part about this destination is the view from the top of the mountains.

When you’ve had enough of hiking or camping, the city of Nizwa is close by. Here you can explore Nizwa Souq, one of the oldest souqs in Oman, and the historic Nizwa Fort. Everything is very family-friendly for taking the kids.

If you’re camping, you can return to your campsite and do like that Omanis do and have a BBQ. If you’ve decided on a more luxurious trip and splashed out on one of the fabulous hotels, then winding down in the spa after exploring all day.

Distance: 417.9 km Driving time : 4 hours 30 minutes

8. Sohar, Oman

short travel from uae

If you’re looking for a shorter drive than Nizwa, Sohar is closer to the border of Dubai in Oman and is a lovely seaside town. Taking approximately 2 and a half hours to drive. Sohar has a rich history and a fort similar to Nizwa but on a smaller scale. It also has beautiful mosques and souks similar to other other parts of Oman.

Sohar is a great destination for a relaxing vacation. It’s perfect for families wanting a low-key holiday and is rumoured to be the birthplace of mythical Sinbad the Sailor. So why not spend some time enjoying the beach or sea?

If you don’t drive, you can also take a bus to Sohar from Dubai . Making a really affordable destination for those wanting to travel without spending a fortune.

Distance: 222 km Driving time : 2 hours 30 minutes

9. Khobar, Saudi Arabia

short travel from uae

Since starting the Saudi tourist visa , Saudi has started to become a unique destination for those wanting to go the route less travelled. Khobar has stunning blue waters and quiet beach resorts, such as Half Moon Bay.

If you’re planning an epic road trip, it’s possible to do a stop or two in Abu Dhabi, a stop at Khobar and then finally hopping over to Bahrain.

This destination is further than the others and does require a confident driver, as you’ll be going through some of the more lonely quarters of the desert. Hence why it’s called “The Empty Quarter.” So you’ll need to pack some supplies with you in case of any emergencies.

It’s also possible to fly if you prefer, though you will likely need to hire a car once you reach the other side, as Saudi doesn’t have a huge public transport infrastructure for getting around the city. Also, different attractions can be quite far apart.

Distance: 798 km Driving time : 8 hours 24 minutes

10. Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

short travel from uae

In the last few years, it’s incredible the amount of change that has happened in Riyadh. Riyadh has some really amazing sights not far from the city and has combined its bedouin roots into a unique artistic culture that exists within Saudi. It has a certain ruggedness around the edges. So if you’re one of those people who think the UAE is over-polished, Riyadh could be the perfect spot for you.

Some of the unique things to do are, driving to Edge of The World, visiting the historical area of Diriyah or exploring Heet Cave in the middle of the desert.

Again you’ll need to make sure you’re fully prepared for this drive as you’ll pass through some rather desolate areas and flights are also available taking around 2 hours from Dubai.

Distance: 1056 km Driving time : 10 hours 46 minutes Flying time : 2 hours

11. Manama, Bahrain

short travel from uae

Actually, this one you can choose to drive or fly but you do need either a Saudi tourist visa or a Saudi transit visa if you plan to drive here. You can really make a road trip of it and stop by some places in Abu Dhabi along the way.

Staying within the GCC, Bahrain is famous for its foodie scene and there are even some restaurants by famous chefs that aren’t in Dubai. Such as Cut by Wolfgang Puck. It’s only a one hour flight away, making it another great choice for a short trip from Dubai.

Manama, of course, is quite similar to Dubai in terms of culture and lifestyle. There are so many beautiful hotels to choose from and the Four Seasons here is probably one of the most stunning in the Arabian Gulf with its lobby of artificial silk trees.

In terms of attractions in Manama, Bahrain has lots to offer with its history. You can wander around Manama Souq, visit the Bahrain National Museum, Al Fateh Grand Mosque or the famous Tree of Life. Manama is a great vacation if you’re wanting to travel somewhere without giving up the lifestyle we become accustomed to in Dubai.

Distance: 840.9 km Driving time : 9 hours 13 minutes

12. Muscat, Oman

short travel from uae

The capital city of Oman is another gem of the Gulf region where you can enjoy the similarities to the UAE while also enjoying the differences. You’ll see Omanis walking around with their colourful hats and traditional dress. The National Museum of Oman will take you through time, back to the golden age of Islam and the rich history of trade that Oman has with the East African nations.

Other activities are its beautiful mosques, traditional souqs and the lovely corniche by the sea. You’ll also see street sellers dotted everywhere selling grilled meats and fish. The best part about Muscat is you really can choose what type of vacation or holiday you want, whether it’s relaxed high end luxury or a very down to earth cultural experience.

Distance: 452.8 km Driving time : 4 hours 35 minutes

Locations Short Flights from Dubai

All these destinations are a short flight away from Dubai, making them perfect for a long weekend or for those who just don’t want to do a long flight. I like to use Skyscanner to find the cheapest possible flights for the destination I want.

13. Baku, Azerbaijan

short travel from uae

The capital city of Azerbaijan, a vibrant city that is popular with UAE residents due to its closeness to Dubai. Taking only three hours by plane. Ideal for a short trip. It’s also an ideal break if you’re wanting something that feels completely different to Dubai. There’s plenty of history and culture in this city located by the sea.

Key places to visit include The Palace of Shirvanshahs, Central Botanical Gardens, Bibiheybat mosque or you can wander around the historic Old Town and visit the many attractions.

Azerbaijani food is similar in many aspects to Middle Eastern food due to its influence from Persia and the Ottoman Empire. Perfect for those who enjoy their Arabic food home comforts like my husband.

The country also has many nature reserves you can drive to from Baku. One of the closest to Baku is Absheron National Park which is one hour drive. Gobustan National Park is another popular one and is also only one hour drive away from Baku.

Distance: 2940.5 km Flight time : 2 hours 55 minutes

14. Tbilisi, Georgia

short travel from uae

What you’ll spend on flights, you’ll certainly save on accommodation and going out by visiting Georgia. This country is hugely popular to travel to from the UAE and is not as well known for those outside the Gulf region. It also has many free activities.

Narikala Fortress is a must-visit and you’ll experience some of the Arab history in Europe. There’s also a 1500 meter trail around the fortress, taking you to some of Tbilisi’s most famous sights and into the old town. Along with beautiful views over the city.

Distance: 3395.7 km Flight time : 3 hours 30 minutes

15. Colombo, Sri Lanka

short travel from uae

Sri Lanka is full of natural beauty and is an ideal affordable vacation destination. The island is great for those wanting a break from the busy and metropolitan lifestyle of Dubai. Its naturally stunning beaches and breathtaking nature is very different from the UAE.

It is an often-overlooked tourist destination but is a wonderful gem that offers a variety of activities including safaris, whale spotting and natural beaches. Though to really take all of its beauty in, you’ll need a couple of weeks.

Many dishes have a lovely flavour mix of coconut and spices. Definitely one of the most enjoyable things for me about Sri Lanka is the food!

I recommend staying in the capital of Colombo trip for one night before heading to other parts of the Island. There’s really so much to choose from depending on what you’d like to do. Kandy offers lots of culture, Sigiriya is home to the famous rock citadel and Mirissa offers beautiful beaches with the chance to go whale spotting. So you can truly customise your stay based on what you’d love to do.

Distance: 3307 km Flight time: 4 hours 30 minutes

One of the best parts about living in Dubai is all the amazing destinations you can easily travel to. We hope this list of inspirations for a short trip from Dubai helps give you a few different travel ideas or even several destinations to add to your must-visit list.

My favourite if I want somewhere close to Dubai, would be Fujairah or staying on the fabulous Nurai Island . If you’re a family wanting something affordable, Jabal Al Akhdar is an awesome camping spot and a great range of hotels. If you really want something unique, then Sir Bani Yas is a one of a kind trip. But why only pick one? Use this list and plan some trips for years to come!

Don’t forget to use Skyscanner to find the cheapest possible flights to whichever destination you choose!

Short trips from Dubai

Short trips from Dubai for the weekend

If you reside in Dubai, there are several fantastic destinations nearby where you can retreat to over the weekend. You can spend a couple of days away from the emirate in some amazing locations that are a short flight, or even a drive away. Here are the best destinations for short trips from Dubai for the weekend.

SHORT TRIPS FROM DUBAI: TOP DESTINATIONS AND THINGS TO DO

While most European countries are over 4 hours away from Dubai, there are plenty of destinations in the Middle East which are ideal for a short trip. If you are keen on visa-free destinations which require longer travel time, take a look at the places with visa-free travel for UAE residents .

LOCATIONS FOR SHORT TRIPS FROM DUBAI OUTSIDE THE UAE

Oman and salalah.

The neighbouring country of Oman is just a short flight or even a drive away. Now, Dubai residents can even get a Dubai to Oman bus . So you can enjoy the perfect short vacation without costing a fortune. This is especially true if you head to Salalah, which is among the top destinations to visit in Oman .

On a short vacation from Dubai in Salalah, tourists can engage in a host of activities while also appreciating the beautiful landscape. Examples include boating, mountain trekking and beach lounging. You can also take cruises from Juweira harbour. There are dozens of species of whales, dolphins and other marine life in the waters around Salalah.

July to September is a good time to take short trips from Dubai to Salalah as the climate is cooler. You can see the lush greenery all over during the monsoon months and the sandy white beaches are filled with banana, papaya and coconut plantations. After September, temperatures can reach even the mid-twenties, especially in December.

Salalah waterfall

Day trips from Dubai to Oman take 4.5 hours by car, around 6 hours by bus and two hours by plane.

JORDAN AND AMMAN

Among the best short trips from Dubai, you can also take a 3-hour Dubai to Jordan flight to explore the magical country of Jordan. This place offers you unique experiences, liking swimming in the Dead Sea or taking a mud bath. And let’s not forget the ancient city of Petra. From the ancient town of Madaba to the coast region of Aqaba, Jordan has something for everyone.

The capital of Jordan is a great place for a short vacation from Dubai. Apart from the Dead Sea, Amman offers plenty of activities for tourists. You can head to Rainbow Street to find great places to eat, drink and socialise. History buffs can visit the ruins of Al Qala’a, while Jabal Al Weibdeh offers much in the way of contemporary art. Amman is also home to the Dana Biosphere, Jordan’s largest natural reserve.

Bahrain may not be poles apart from the UAE, but it offers a change of scenery a few hours away from Dubai. You can easily cover a major chunk of the small kingdom over the weekend. Places to visit include Bahrain Fort, Manama Souq or the innovative city of Muharraq.

If you love the waters, you can take a boat trip to the small island of Jarada, or even have a fun day at Al Dar Islands. While there, make it a point to visit the Tree of Life, a tree that remains green all-year-round despite the hot desert climate and no (visible) water source. The tree is located at the highest point of Bahrain, which makes for an exciting trip.

Al HAJAR MOUNTAIN REGION

The Hajar mountain range spreads over a large part of the UAE and crosses over into Oman.

The western Hajar Mountain region is one of the most dramatic mountain regions in the region. You can go hiking in the mountains or enjoy a weekend stay at the Alila Jabal Akhdar five-star resort on top of Hajar mountains. The resort promotes sustainability and eco-tourism and you can enjoy activities like cycling, hiking, mountain climbing, cave adventures and kite flying.

In addition to these, destinations such as Georgia and Armenia are also a short flight away.

LOCATIONS FOR SHORT TRIPS FROM DUBAI WITHIN THE UAE

 hatta.

If you are driving to Oman or taking a bus trip, you can also make a stopover at Hatta. This small town is located in the Hajar Mountains and is the ideal spot for those who are seeking short getaways from Dubai. You can visit the old town in Hatta to look at the traditional houses or climb the cool mountain paths to experience the wilder side of the UAE.

The most famous place to visit is the Hatta Heritage Village . This is a reconstructed traditional mountain village exhibiting weaponry, palm-tree products, handicrafts, traditional dresses and music.

Moving on, you can also head to the famous Hatta Dam. With its clear turquoise water, the dam is an ideal location for activities like biking, boating, kayaking and pedal boating. These are only some of the many  things to do in Hatta . You can drive up to Hatta in less than 1 hour and 30 minutes from central Dubai.

Hatta Dam

If you are seeking short getaways from Dubai but still want to stay in the country, what better place than the capital itself? You can take a day trip to Dubai from Abu Dhabi in less than two hours or even take a bus from Dubai to Abu Dhabi .

You will find Abu Dhabi to be more relaxed though, where you can enjoy long walks on its relatively low-crowd beaches. If you’re feeling contemplative or doing some soul searching, just head over to the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque . You can go bargain shopping at Heritage Village or visit some of the world’s best-themed parks. In short, there is no shortage of things to do in Abu Dhabi on a weekend .

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Garden City of the UAE, Al Ain is also a great weekend destination, especially if you are considering a change in weather and scenery. The city offers everything from historic sites to water-based activities. You can head to the Al Ain Zoo and watch wildlife up close on a safari. And be sure to check out Wadi Adventure , which has the world’s largest man-made white-water channels. For accommodation, you can consider Danat Al Ain or The Hilton Al Ain.

Al Ain is about 100 km away from Dubai. Now you can even take a bus from Dubai to Al Ain  and reach your destination in about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

If you want to get a glimpse of the culture of the UAE, head over the city of Sharjah. You can reach Sharjah by car, bus or taxi is less than an hour. A one day Sharjah tour can easily be filled with trips to museums and cultural centres. The third-largest city in the UAE, Sharjah was declared as the Arab Capital of Culture by UNESCO. Of course, that is not all the emirate has to offer (just check out our master list of things to do in Sharjah ).

You can always head over to the Corniche area, known for its sandy white beaches.

Another great location for a weekend getaway is the Khorfakkan beach which is also technically a part of Sharjah, although it’s fairly close to Fujairah. This beach in Sharjah is all about beautiful views and water sports. A family-friendly picnic spot, the beach is lined with palm trees, swings and football goals. Stretching over 3 km, the beach is also home to the Khorfakkan Resort & Spa. The resort offers visitors a range of activities such as diving, fishing, boating and water sports. Or you can just keep things simple and relax on the sand or take a dip in the clear waters of Khorfakkan (read more about things to do at Khorfakkan Beach here).

Khorfakkan

As you move along the Corniche, you will also find huts where they rent jet skis. If you have some extra time, you can also take a small boat from the beach to the nearby Shark Island, which is a popular spot for snorkelling and scuba diving.

Located two hours from Dubai is the emirate of Fujairah. The place has a unique landscape that features beaches and rocky outcrops. Covering most of the UAE’s east coast, Fujairah is a great place for outdoor activities over the weekend. Not to mention, you will find several cultural attractions in Fujairah as well. For accommodation, you can check out hotels in Fujairah for a weekend getaway .

Among other things, there is a Friday Market in Fujairah in the mountainous town of Masafi. You can visit the Souq Al Juma for snacks, local sweets, pottery, plants and especially carpets. History buffs, on the other hand, can head to the city centre to visit the fascinating Al Hayl Castle. Its location on the mountainside makes for an adventurous trip, but one that is ‘scenic-ly’ rewarded once you’re up there.

Also on Fridays, you can visit the Corniche to catch some bull butting action. Unlike traditional (and brutal) animal fights, bull butting is more of a wrestling competition where the gigantic creatures have to push each other out of a marked circle. These are some of the many reasons you should visit Fujairah over the weekend . Travelling to the emirate is easy and affordable, especially with Dubai to Fujairah bus service.

Fujairah Castle

RAS AL KHAIMAH

Another picture-perfect location for a weekend getaway from Dubai, the mountainous terrains of RAK come with luxury hotels and resorts and a range of thrilling outdoor adventures. You can conquer the Jebel Jais , enjoy the scenic beaches and indulge in the refined luxury of the hotels in Ras Al Khaimah for a perfect short trip from Dubai. Take a look at the complete list of things to do in Ras Al Khaimah to plan your ideal weekend retreat from Dubai.

Although it may be the smallest emirate of the UAE, Ajman is also a great escape from the bustling city life of Dubai. The untouched beaches, quaint historic attractions and luxury resorts make it ideal for people of all ages. Take a look at our guide to the main attractions in Ajman and enjoy the many interesting activities in the charming emirate.

So that’s about it. Of course, this list doesn’t exhaust all the possible destinations for short trips from Dubai for the weekend. Alternately, you can also read all about road trips in the UAE so that you can enjoy a long drive over the weekend while immersing in the landscape of the emirates. Of course, there are so many things to do on a weekend in Dubai that you may not get a chance to leave the city after all.

But a benefit of living in Dubai is that you can fly to destinations in Asia, Europe and even Africa in less than five hours. We have listed some of these in our list of the best winter destinations from Dubai . Plus, if you are travelling off-season, you can even save money on the airfare and hotel bookings.

9 countries to visit that are just a short flight from the UAE

short travel from uae

With travel well and truly back on for the upcoming summer season, as well as the upcoming Eid Al Fitr break, it’s time to start planning your next getaway.

A last-minute trip is much more practical if the flight is short, as it avoids losing days to travel and to jet lag.

There are an array of places surrounding the UAE that are just a short flight away, from skiing in Georgia to relaxing in the Seychelles.

The Maldives is a destination that UAE residents commonly book. A four-hour flight takes you to crystal turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean and white sand beaches – the ultimate description of paradise. With many Atolls and resorts to choose from, rest assured that wherever your choice, you will be encompassed by luxury and leave feeling like your trip has been longer than just four days.

Black sand beaches to mountain villages, Georgia is increasingly becoming a destination of interest, particularly as it’s just a three-and-a-half-hour flight from the UAE. December to April is the time to book for ski season but the capital of Tbilisi is ideal to explore all year around. The diversity of the old town’s cobbled streets in comparison to the coastal botanical gardens of Batumi and vast landscape of Lake Rica are part of Georgia’s charm.

Cairo, Egypt

Situated on the Nile River, Cairo is the largest city in Africa. This destination is for the explorers and history-lovers as just a short while away is Giza, the site of the iconic pyramids and Great Sphinx. A day spent here discovering the ancient Egyptian artwfacts should be followed by an evening trying local delicacies; falafel, mahshi and most importantly karkadeh, a traditional hibiscus tea.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by The Seychelles Islands (@visitseychelles)

Another destination in the Indian Ocean is the Seychelles. Similar to the Maldives pristine white sand beaches and turquoise waters, yet with the addition of the Morne Seychellois National park and rare animals such as the giant Aldabra tortoises. The Seychelles is one of the world’s smallest countries where relaxation goes hand in hand with nature and the preservation of the 115 beautiful islands.

Potentially the shortest flight on this list. Oman is just 50 minutes by plane, so saves a four-hour drive and border crossings. Stay in the mountains in Jabal Akhdar where you can abseil or cycle through the mountain ranges. Find a desert camp in a Wadi where you can relax with traditional spa treatments in which you are buried in the sand before enjoying traditional Omani Shuwa. A visit to the capital of Muscat will keep you on your toes as you discover the history of the country and explore the markets and bazaars.

Uzbekistan: The Land of the Silk route

Another destination from the Middle East that has been gaining steam recently is Uzbekistan. With cheap flights daily from Sharjah with a flying time of 3 hours, cities like Tashkent and Bishkek are just hours away from Dubai.

Turkey: The land of the Crescent Moon

After spending more than 10 days in Turkey last year, I cannot wait to go back in the summer. With more than 10 flights a day from popular GCC cities and a flying time of just under 5 hours, Turkey is definitely the most popular destination from Dubai in recent times.

Spend your days wandering the city of Istanbul which is the perfect blend of East and the West, stare at the chimneys of Cappadocia from a hot balloon ride, visit the many heritage sites across the country and also go for a swim in the many mediterranean beaches around its coast.

Greece: The land of stunning beaches

Go island hopping among the turquoise waters of the coast of Greece, stare at the history of Greek around the many UNESCO sites in Athens and visit the world famous islands of Santorini, Paros etc.

Surprisingly this destination is only 5 hours from Dubai and is a haven for anyone looking to enjoy the blue waters. You require a Schengen visa to visit this country.

Tanzania: My favorite land

For people new to the page, I grew up in Dar-Es-Salaam in Tanzania, Africa and hence that is the reason it is my favorite place in the world.

With some world class national parks like Ngorongoro and Serengeti, it is a must visit for every wild life enthusiast and to catch a glimpse of the Big 5. The island of Zanzibar is said to be one of the most beautiful islands in the world and this destination is only 5.5 hours from Dubai.

Best time to visit : April to May or Spring

Albania: The misjudged land

Albania ended up being one of my most favorite destinations ever. Tirana, the capital is full of war memorabilia while the stunning Albanian Riviera coast is a must visit for all sea lovers.

An underrated destination which is only 6 hours away from Dubai. Also, don’t forget to visit the historical towns of Gjirokaster and Berat while on a road trip in Albania. The mountain region of Theth is another must visit.

Best_short_trips_from_Dubai_Albania

Croatia: The land of best road trip

I did a 10 day road trip in Croatia a few years back and it was definitely one of my favorite solo travel destinations from Dubai. Start in the Game of Thrones city of Dubrovnik before heading to Split to go island hopping among the many islands in the region.

Go visit the charming town of Zadar before spending a couple of days hiking around the Plitvice lakes and end your journey in the capital city of Zagreb. For an offbeat experience, don’t forget to visit the region of Istria. Another destination that is just under 6 hours from Dubai.

A flight from Dubai to Belgrade will take around 6 hours and this affordable destination should definitely be on your bucket list.

Austria: The Land of Music

I have been thrice to Austria and everytime I find a new place to fall in love with and you need to add it to the list of where to travel from Dubai. Last year, I spent time in the capital city exploring the various Christmas markets in the city. I also visited the fairytale village of Hallstatt twice as well as went prancing to the tunes of Sound of Music in Salzburg.

Also, don’t forget to try the Sacher Torte cake or go skiing in the many alpine ski resorts in the region. This destination is also 6 hours from Doha.

Best time to visit : April to June and September to October and December for Christmas time

Hungary: The land of thermal spas

Another 6 hour destination from Dubai is Budapest and this charming city divided by a river should also be on your go list. Go have a fun time in the many thermal spas in the city or just stroll along the river catching a view of the majestic parliament.

Thailand: Land of Smiles

Even though this destination takes around 6 hours and 15 minutes, I knew I had to include it in this list since it is a popular destination for many Dubai residents.

15 places to go for a long weekend from Dubai

By Nicola Chilton

Tbilisi Georgia

With Dubai’s strategic location and huge flight network, it’s only natural that heading out on a long weekend trip is de rigueur for its residents. Here are 15 of our favourite destinations within a four-hour flight from Dubai , from urban centres to dazzling desertscapes and relaxing seaside spots.

Alula Saudi Arabia

The tomb of Lihyan Son of Kuza in Alula, Saudi Arabia

1. AlUla, Saudi Arabia

With ancient stone-hewn tombs, otherworldly landscapes and an oasis of more than two million date palms, there’s much to love about Saudi Arabia 's AlUla. Less crowded than Petra, AlUla’s Nabataean tombs, including the tomb of Lihyan Son of Kuza, carved from one enormous solitary rock, are some of the most photogenic sites in the region. But there’s much to discover beyond them, like the Ashar Valley’s dazzling Maraya, the world’s largest mirrored building that reflects the red rock scenery from every angle, and the mountain of Jabal Ikmah, covered in thousands of inscriptions and pictographs, recently included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World register. Go in winter for restaurants that pop up around the area, as well as a full calendar of concerts, hot air balloon flights and more.

Jordan's charming capital Amman

Jordan's charming capital, Amman

2. Amman, Jordan

The Jordanian capital is the gateway to Petra and the Dead Sea, both of which can be visited on (fairly long) day trips from the city. But Amman has enough charm to easily fill a long weekend. Its city-centre archaeological sites, from the Citadel to the Roman Theatre, are easily accessible, but it’s also less than an hour by car to the well-preserved sprawling Roman ruins of Jerash. Amman is also a place to dedicate time to eating, from streetside falafel and foul to elegant restaurants and cafés. Head to Fakhreldin in the house of a former Prime Minister for nostalgic Levantine flavours, or to Sufra on Rainbow Street for hearty home-style Jordanian dishes. If you want to learn how to cook these flavours for yourself, Beit Sitti is a friendly cooking school run by three sisters and their mother using recipes handed down through the family for generations.

Pearl Roundabout Manama Bahrain

Pearl Roundabout in Bahrain's understated capital, Manama

Understated Bahrain doesn’t receive the same attention as many of its Gulf neighbours, but there’s plenty to do on a long weekend. This is a destination with a rich history, from restored merchant houses to forts, Dilmun burial mounds, and the UNESCO World Heritage certified Bahrain Pearling Path, a 3.5-kilometre trail leading from the seashore to the heart of Muharraq.  It’s also well served by luxury resorts, including outposts of Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and Jumeirah, for those looking for an easy and relaxed family getaway.

In Lebanon's capital Beirut city and beach go sidebyside

In Lebanon's capital Beirut, city and beach go side-by-side

4. Beirut, Lebanon

In spite of all of its troubles, Beirut consistently proves itself to be an irresistible getaway destination from Dubai, and it’s not hard to see why. With exceptional dining, nightlife and a good variety of accommodation options, from heritage brands to boutique hotels, it’s a perennial crowd-pleaser. The Sursock Museum has reopened after sustaining considerable damage in the 2020 port explosion, and the Gemmayze and Mar Mikhael neighbourhoods are as energetic as they’ve ever been. Don’t miss Beit Kanz, a flower-filled cultural hub and restaurant in a restored historical landmark building that celebrates Lebanon’s creative community, craft heritage and culinary art.

Autumnal colours make for striking scenes in Bishkek's Oak Park

Autumnal colours make for striking scenes in Bishkek's Oak Park

5. Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

The Kyrgyz capital is a leafy, park-filled place flanked by snow-capped mountains and the easily accessible Ala-Archa Canyon for spectacular day hikes. Many visitors skip the city and head straight for Kyrgyzstan’s breathtaking interior landscapes, but there are many reasons to spend a few days here. Lunch next to the fountain at Frunze on the edge of Oak Park is a delight, with creative dishes built around local seasonal ingredients. The walking tours by Bishkek Walks are a great way to explore the city’s Soviet-era statues and neo-classical buildings, and you can pick up felt slippers, traditional Kalpak hats and watermelons sold out of car boots at the sprawling Osh Bazaar.

The Pyramids of Giza loom over Egypt's capital Cairo

The Pyramids of Giza loom over Egypt's capital, Cairo

6. Cairo, Egypt

The long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum is supposed to be opening this year after many delays. But even if it doesn’t, there are still plenty of reasons to head to the Egyptian capital. If you’ve already seen the Pyramids of Giza, head out to the extraordinary stepped pyramid at nearby Saqqara and the Bent Pyramid at Dahshur. Many visitors to Cairo look at the Nile rather than getting out on it, but you can hop on a water taxi (and avoid Cairo’s notorious traffic) to see the city from the water, or even SUP on the river.

Lac Abbe Djibouti

The otherworldly limestone chimneys of Lac Abbé, Djibouti

7. Djibouti

Djibouti’s scenery is dazzling, ranging from the otherworldly limestone chimneys of Lac Abbé, a body of water that bubbles with sulphurous hot springs and plumes of steam, to the salt-encrusted Lac Assal, the lowest place on the African continent. There are also volcanic landscapes, deserts, mountains and a tiny forest filled with surprising biodiversity, all squeezed into this tiny country. But as alluring as the inland sights are, don’t miss diving into the sea off Djibouti, one of the best places in the world to swim with whale sharks. For the best chances of a sighting, visit between November and January. The Djibouti Palace Kempinski is a reliable hotel choice in the capital, and can arrange tours and activities around the country.

The futuristic skyline of Doha Qatar

The futuristic skyline of Doha, Qatar

8. Doha, Qatar

For an art-filled break, hop on the one-hour flight to Doha . The Qatari capital’s museums are famed for showcasing exhibitions by big-name global artists such as Jeff Koons and Yayoi Kusama, but the city’s collection of public art is equally interesting as what’s kept indoors. Stay at The Ned, housed in the beautifully brutalist former Ministry of Interior building, and you’ll have access to the hotel’s own art collection showcasing the works of Qatari artists. If you’re hungry for more, rent a car and head out into the desert to track down two of the most exciting works of all - Richard Serra’s East-West/West-East monolithic 14-metre-high steel plates, and the mirrored rings that make up Olafur Eliasson’s Shadows Travelling on the Sea of the Day.

The stunning Hawa Mahal Palace in Jaipur

The stunning Hawa Mahal Palace in Jaipur

9. Jaipur, India

The capital of Rajasthan is a dizzying place with an irresistible spirit that pulls you in and spins you around. It’s a riot of bustling markets, dazzling colours and exquisite architecture, including the famous facade of Hawa Mahal ‘Palace of the Winds’, the colourful peacock doors of the City Palace, and the honey-hued Amber Fort, a 30-minute drive outside the city. Jaipur is also home to some spectacular hotels , like the Rajmahal Palace and the Villa Palladio, which embraces maximalism at its Instagrammable best. For something a little more understated right in the heart of the Lal Haveli jeweller’s bazaar, head to The Johri, a restored 19 th century home with calming interiors and an excellent restaurant. The truffle cheese kulcha and the chaat selections will have you planning your next trip before you’ve even finished dinner.

New Chorniche Jeddah

Jeddah's quaint Corniche

10. Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Jeddah is different. So says the city’s motto, and it’s true. Long the gateway to Makkah for pilgrims arriving by sea, Jeddah has a cosmopolitan population whose different cultural backgrounds are reflected in the fantastic food that’s waiting to be discovered here, from ma’soub to murtabak to foul . A major restoration programme is underway in Al Balad, Jeddah’s UNESCO World Heritage certified historical district, with new life being breathed into handsome centuries-old homes. It’s a beautiful place to wander, and you’ll soon be able to stay there, too – a new hotel, spread across three of the buildings, is set to open before the end of the year.

Aerial view of palm trees at beach at Dhidhdhoo Maldives

The Maldives is a four-hour flight from Dubai

11. Maldives

A direct flight from Dubai to Male is just over four hours and for a long weekend, the Maldives resorts located within a speedboat ride of the airport are the easiest options to make the most of your time. If travelling with friends, One&Only Reethi Rah’s Grand Beach Villa sleeps up to six and has its own pool right on the beach. The dhoni-shaped overwater villas at Como Cocoa Island have long been a favourite of couples, and the extensive wellness facilities here offer holistic programming and healthy cuisine. Kurumba, only ten minutes from the airport, was a pioneer in Maldivian tourism when it opened in 1972, and is still going strong. A more affordable family-friendly resort, Kurumba places a focus on connecting guests with local communities through music, entertainment and traditional experiences.

Mumbai's colourful Sassoon Docks

Mumbai's colourful Sassoon Docks

12. Mumbai, India

Crowded, noisy and occasionally overwhelming, Mumbai is one of India’s most exciting cities, filled with an intoxicating energy. This is a city to dive straight into, from its flower markets to the sights and smells of the Sassoon Docks, excellent street food, restaurants and buzzing late-night bars. It’s also a place to plan some serious shopping. Head to the Tarun Tahiliani and Sabyasachi stores for elegant – and extravagant – designer Indian attire, to Good Earth for lovely homeware, or dive into Mangaldas Market for a kaleidoscopic selection of fabrics, from silks to sarees to printed cotton. At the end of the day, rest your head in pure luxury at the iconic Taj Mahal Palace, or surrounded by retro charm at Abode Bombay.

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat

13. Muscat, Oman

A short hop by plane over the Hajar Mountains or an easy road trip from Dubai, the Omani capital is an ideal target for a long weekend. With resorts scattered along the coastline, including the new Jumeirah and the long-time favourite Chedi, it's not short of comfortable places to stay. While it's easy to spend the whole time in cosseted luxury, venture out and there’s plenty to do in and around the city, from the unmissable Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque to the frankincense-laden stalls of Mutrah souq. Muscat is also the gateway to mountaintop Jabal Akhdar for cooler summer climes.

Samarkand's Ulugh Beg Madrasa is one of the city's biggest draws

Samarkand's Ulugh Beg Madrasa is one of the city's biggest draws

14. Samarkand, Uzbekistan

Samarkand is as marvellous as its name suggests. This Uzbekistan city on the Silk Road is home to mosaic-covered madrassas, mausoleums and mosques. The detail is dazzling, particularly when set against Samarkand’s clear blue autumn skies. Samarkand’s big draw is the spectacular Registan, a square flanked by three centuries-old madrassas. Timur’s mausoleum, the Gur-e-Amir, is another must visit, but don’t miss hidden gem Aksaray Mausoleum just behind it for beautiful interiors that shimmer in gold and turquoise. Shopping here is also a treat, from silk ikats woven in the Fergana Valley to suzani fabrics, piles of nuts and dried fruits, and huge wheels of bread. Stay at the Bibikhanum Hotel, right next to the turquoise dome of the 15 th century Bibi-Khanym Mosque, to be in the centre of everything.

Georgia's picturesque capital Tbilisi

Georgia's picturesque capital, Tbilisi

15. Tbilisi, Georgia

Tbilisi is a real crowd-pleaser, compact enough to explore by foot and varied enough to ensure you discover something new around every corner. Many come here for the food alone, from gooey, cheesy khachapuri to steaming khinkali dumplings and pkhali puréed vegetables, rich with flavours of garlic, crushed walnuts and pomegranate seeds. The Dry Bridge flea market is the place to pick up antique crystal glasses, tea sets and Soviet-era memorabilia, and fans of brutalist architecture will have plenty to photograph as they wander the streets. Go straight to the source at Stamba, a book-filled, stylishly modernist hotel in a former printing house, where staff uniforms look straight out of The Grand Budapest Hotel , and Tbilisi’s bold and beautiful gather to drink coffee in the garden.

Day Trips from Dubai to Abu Dhabi

One of the most recommended short trips is a 2-day trip from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, offering adventure, culture, and fun.

Yas Island in Abu Dhabi

Located 115kms (1 hour) to the west of Dubai, Yas Island in Abu Dhabi Emirate has a little bit of everything for all ages! You can tackle it in a long Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai. But it would be best to allow 2 days to experience everything Yas Island has to offer.

The island has 4 giant theme parks –  Yas Waterworld ,  Ferrari World ,  Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi and SeaWorld Yas Island . Other than the waterpark, you’ll find the other 3 are all indoor, perfect for coping with the heat. Each offers plenty of action-packed adrenaline rides, including the fastest roller coaster in the world, kid–friendly rides, and entertaining shows.

Yas Island

If you’re the type that thinks of calm blue waters, palm trees and marinas when you mention the word “island”, you won’t be disappointed either.  Abu Dhabi’s island of fun includes a private resort beach. There is free access if you’re staying at one of the hotels. There is the beautiful Yas Marina, where you can catch a private charter or a cruise to enjoy the waters around Abu Dhabi’s outer islands. The marina has a restaurant, entertainment district, and kids’ play area.

The latest addition to the island is Yas Bay Waterfront. This entertainment district includes Café Del Mar, an exclusive adults-only beach club. And Etihad Arena brings a string of international artists and sporting events to the capital. You’ll find the most happening places here with a string of bars and fine dining restaurants. Families will love bowling and arcade games at Central or pub grub at McCafferty’s.

The main attraction of the island though is Yas Marina Circuit . The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is held here annually in November but there’s motor sports action happening pretty much year-round. If you are lucky to be visiting on a Sunday or Tuesday evening, come and join in the fun of Yas open nights where you can walk or cycle the Grand Prix track for free!   It’s most beautiful at night when the Yas Hotel that straddles the Grand Prix track is fully lit up. You will find this information on how to get between Dubai and Abu Dhabi useful.

You can book a multi-park ticket to Yas Island or choose a ticket for one of the theme parks. Book a skip-the-line entry ticket to Warner Bros World . Book entrance ticket to SeaWorld , the region’s first marine life theme park.

Top tip : If you book a hotel on Yas Island, your room can be booked with your choice of theme park tickets included!

Adrenaline rush at Ferrari World

Ferrari World is located on the action-packed Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. It is a must amongst Dubai day trips if cars and adventure is your thing. Put simply, is a motor-enthusiasts dream. The vast covered air-conditioned atrium of this uber modern shaped building houses as many adrenaline-soaked rides you could ever find under one roof. The 4 in-house rollercoasters though do whisk patrons out in the searing desert heat brief period, significantly adding to the thrill.

If you have ambitions of becoming a formula one race car driver, ensure you take a ride on the Formula Rossa. This engineering marvel will allow you to experience the acceleration effects of going from 0-240kph in under five seconds. Not much can prepare you for the shock of this. The added twists and turns bring some serious G-forces so it is not for the faint of heart!

The rest of Ferrari World contains a very well themed Flying Aces roller coaster, go-carts, driving simulators, stage shows. You can also race the clock changing a wheel on an actual F1 racing car. There is also a lot of history of the Ferrari Motor Company if you are specifically an Italian car enthusiast. Of course, if someone in your group is not up for an adrenaline rush, the connected Yas Mall will occupy with them a serious dose of retail therapy.

Consider this full-day tour from Dubai to explore Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Emirates Palace and the Ferrari World.

Mega Theme Park: Warner Bros World

Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi is one of the largest indoor theme parks in the world. It is a perfect spot to keep cool on a hot day whilst also having tonnes of fun. It’s a pretty easy day trip from Dubai to the Yas Island attraction with the free shuttle bus from the Sheraton Mall of The Emirates. Otherwise, it’s a 1hr 10 min drive from Dubai with ample free parking at the theme park.

This indoor park is fantastic for ages ranging from around 5 or 6 to adults. Babies and toddlers are also welcome, and there are a handful of rides for them. But it is much better for children who can reach the necessary height restriction for most rides. For many adults, Warner Bros World is like a blast from the past with beloved childhood cartoon characters and immersive worlds such as Bedrock and Gotham City.

short travel from uae

If you are visiting with younger children, it’s best to start at Bedrock and work anti-clockwise through the circular route. Otherwise, head straight to Metropolis with tweens and teens to make the most of the bigger rides, which tend to get busier as the day progresses. It’s a good idea to look at the map, work out the rides you’d like to take and ensure the height restriction will not disappoint little ones.

Equally, there are some climbing zones, one requiring socks and another requiring closed shoes, so it’s worth keeping this in mind. Most likely, you feel quite warm from all of the excitement. But it is a fully AC park, so you may want a layer for waiting for the kiddos to take the ride.

Some of the highlights include The Flinstones Bedrock Adventure, an immersive river boat adventure with a raft-like drop at the end into the water. Be prepared for a bit of a splash! Fast and Furr-ous is another great ride. It’s a rollercoaster which hangs beneath the track and whizzes around Cartoon Junction above the heads of other guests. Finally, The Riddler Revolution is an adrenaline-fuelled ride for adults and kids, which is usually a highlight for many.

We also can’t forget the various performances and immersive experiences. Make sure to check the schedule on arrival. Most take place in the main plaza area. Plenty of different eateries exist, with options ranging from fast food to sit-down restaurants. It is easy to book online admission ticket for Warner Bros World.

It’s important to note that as an active house of worship, a  strict dress code is applied for visitors to the Grand Mosque . They no longer provide free abayas for ladies or kanduras for men. So it’s essential you dress appropriately. A small shopping arcade is now located at the entrance so you can buy appropriate clothing, such as head scarves, if required.

Free cultural tours are offered every hour if you’d like to learn more about the building and its cultural and spiritual importance. Or you can self-guide your way around both the vast prayer hall and the grounds. If time permits, head across the freeway in front of the mosque for some of the best distance views of the building’s exterior at Wahat Al Karama. This is a memorial for fallen soldiers with a stunning reflective pool.

Unusual cultural experience at Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

For an interesting cultural experience, include a visit to the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital  on a day trip from Dubai. Falcons are revered in the emirates, symbols of national pride. The care bestowed on falcons at the hospital reflects their status in Emirati culture.

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is a world-class veterinary care facility that treats over 11,000 birds each year. It conducts research and offers training, boarding, and grooming services. There’s also a falcon release program where wild falcons are cared for and released back into the wild.

short travel from uae

In 2007, the hospital introduced an award-winning tourism program. Its ‘Falcon World Tour’ is an informative, interactive tour offering insights into the world of these majestic birds, the history of falconry, and the life and care of falcons in modern times. The Falcon World Tour is a rich educational experience for people of all ages. It includes a presentation in the on-site falcon museum, and a visit to the treatment room where visitors observe a checkup of an anesthetized falcon.

Treatment includes the trimming of its beak and talons and perhaps the repair or replacement of a damaged or missing feather. The examination and procedures are accompanied by an interesting commentary delivered by a member of the hospital staff. A highlight of the tour is for each visitor to have a falcon perched on an arm in the treatment room. Thankfully, leather gloves are available to protect visitors’ arms from talons.

Day Trips from Dubai to other Emirates

Dubai, known for its vibrant city life and opulent attractions, also offers a plethora of short day trips for those seeking adventure, culture, and stunning scenery. Here are some short trips from Dubai to explore the nearby region’s hidden gems.

Adventures galore at Hatta Dam

If you’re craving adventure, you only need to drive 2 hours from Dubai to Hatta. In the Hajar mountains, you will discover a range of fun activities to suit families, couples and singles looking for a city getaway.

Kayaking in the freshwaters of Hatta Dam is mind-blowing with the turquoise waterscontrasting against the dark volcanic landscape. You can try the pedal boats, donut boats, yellow boats and water bikes if you’d rather! Hatta is a popular spot for mountain-bikers with a selection of easy to hard trails to ride on. This is a fabulous way to explore the mountainous terrain.

Hatta Dam

If you fancy taking it at a slower pace, throw on your hiking boots and experience the 3 km or 9 km routes. You will pass by spots of green vegetation by the wadis. A welcome sight against the expanse of the rocky Hajer Mountains. The treks bring you out near the Hatta Heritage Village where you can discover what life was like in Dubai a few thousand years ago. It was restored in 2001 to include two watchtowers, mosque and a fort. Inside the ruler’s house, ‘Bait Al Wali’, you can see displays of weaponry, artefacts, palm-tree products, handicrafts, weaving and traditional dress.

The adventure doesn’t stop there. To get a full flavour of this fascinating trip from Dubai, stay at the JA Hatta Fort Hotel . Here you can choose to relax by the pool or get involved in the activities on the resort such as archery, mini-golf, garden chess, tennis and much more. The chalet-style rooms are modern inside with character too. The views overlooking the lush green gardens with the backdrop of the Hajar Mountains are priceless. What’s not to love?

Cultural trip to Al Ain

Al Ain, at a distance of about 150 km. It makes for a good short trip from Dubai, if you are looking for culture and sightseeing. The first interesting site you can visit is the Al Ain Palace Museum . The most amazing thing about this landmark is the way the architecture blends the old and the new. Specifically, you can see Emerati-influenced design everywhere. The courtyards are a way to merge together the private and the public facilities of the structure.

old-fort-al-ain

The buildings are maintained well with local, environmentally-friendly resources like clay and adobe. You can see the room that was used to teach palace residents the ways of the Qur’an, and Hadith that shows the teachings of Muhammad inscribed right on the ceiling. It is a moving visit for all and a very historical one at that. You can pay a visit here anywhere from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM, and see what life was like for Sheikh Zayed and his family. It is easy to book a cultural tour from Dubai to Al Ain.

If you or someone in your family is a car guru or auto lover, come check out the Al Ain Classic Car Museum . Here you will find a collection of old, treasured cars that go all the way back to the turn of the century. A Ford Model T, for example, is part of the collection. There is a huge garage in the back that you can check out. Here all the restorative work goes on-it shows that these cars take time to look their best. You can take photos of the cars, but no posing with them is allowed.  The employees are helpful and kind and will answer any questions you might have.

Al Noor island and Butterfly House, Sharjah

For a perfect family day out from Dubai, head over to Buhairah Corniche in Sharjah. Start off at  Al Noor Island and Butterfly House .

After admiring the beautiful award-winning Butterfly Pavilion, head into the Butterfly House and see different butterflies fluttering around and even landing on you. Look out for the chrysalises at different stages and caterpillars.

Next, explore the island and stroll through different habitats like the meadow, a cactus garden and silk floss trees! Wander through the maze, jump down the trampoline path, enjoy the art installations, play in the rope park, enjoy the view on the swing seat or relax in the Literature Pavilion.

Short trips from dubai, day trips from dubai, dubai day trips, 2 days trip from dubai, 2 day trip from dubai, Short drives from dubai, Easy trips from dubai, Best day trips from dubai

From there, walk down Buhairah Corniche past Al Noor Mosque to Al Majaz Waterfront and eat at one of the many restaurants or cafes with a view over the lake. From around 4pm, you can take a ride in the Big Balloon that takes you over the lake, or little ones can play in the Splash Park. Or maybe take a dhow ride or rent a kayak or peddle boat. In the evening, you can watch the dancing fountains. If you can, time your visit when one of the many events and festivals are on.

The easiest way to get there is by car/taxi, or take a bus to Jubail Terminal and walk. Another option is to take the water taxi from Deira to Sharjah Aquarium and then a taxi or bus. If you’re planning on visiting more places, using the Hop on Hop off sightseeing bus would be a great option.

Ziplining in Ras Al Khaimah

Dubai has the dual advantage of being a big destination in itself and being able to work as a base for multiple short trips across UAE for a whole range of activities. One of our favourite such short trip from Dubai was to go ziplining in Ras-Al-Khaimah.

Ziplining in RAK

For most adventure enthusiasts, ziplining is something you do for a few minutes in an adventure park. Or as a specialized activity at a tourist attraction and hardly involves travelling to the place just for it. However what if we tell you that that it involves flying like superman on the world’s longest zipline over the Jebel Jais mountains, to a suspended base, at speeds equal to the fastest animal on the planet! Not hooked as yet? What if we tell you that the views are breathtaking? And that after a few minutes of obligatory terror, it is actually possible to enjoy them as if you’re taking a walk in the park.

It takes about 2-2.5 hours just to reach the Toro Verde (The company running the activity) parking lot. The entire experience takes about an hour after you’re fitted in, adding in a buffer to account for holiday season rushes. You can get done by lunch if you leave Dubai at sunrise.

We would recommend leaving early to beat the heat especially if you’re planning to do it anytime between March and October. We can easily recommend this for families, couples and solo adventure junkies alike given its great safety record. There is provision for two people to zip line simultaneously side by side. Book the entrance ticket to zip lining adventure.

Other Easy Day Trips from Dubai

Dubai offers a plethora of exciting short drives from Dubai for adventure enthusiasts, culture lovers, and those seeking picturesque scenery.

Dramatic scenery at Musandam Peninsular, Oman

One of the most spectacular trips you can take from Dubai is to drive through the northern emirates. You will reach up to the very tip of the Arabian Peninsula to where the land meets the Strait of Hormuz in the most spectacular style.  This is often referred to as the “ Norway of Arabia ” due to the dramatic fjords. This little-known natural wonder is, in fact, an enclave of Oman known as the Musandam Peninsular. If you are planning a trip to Oman separately, do look into this 6-day Oman itinerary .

A dramatic coastal drive up the west coast takes you to the regional capital of Khasab , via al Darah border crossing. The drive from Dubai can take anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Or longer depending on the road conditions and border crossing.  Don’t forget to pack your passports and there is a small exit fee to pay from the UAE, as well as an Oman visit visa.

Musandam_Khasab_Harbour

Once your paper work is in order, head to the harbor and get out on a boat! There are motorized speed boat options if you only have a short time to explore. But the best way to get around is to hire a traditional dhow for a day or two and sail between the giant khors.  The waters are home to pods of dolphins, and scores of fish. It’s a popular scuba diving spot. Also a brilliant escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city with a book and a drink in hand.

Khasab itself isn’t much more than a small village but there is a castle with a small museum to explore. There are a few small resorts for overnight stays, or why not try camping? A good skipper can find you a lovely secluded beach. Or you can save on the tents and even sleep overnight on the boat itself under the stars.

These Musandam tours from Dubai are great options:

Hot air balloon ride over Dubai’s desert

If I were to recommend a Dubai day trip, that needs to be the hot air balloon ride over Dubai’s desert I got to try 3 years ago. Really worthy of the early wake-up call and the hour-long ride to get out of the city.

You will be able to witness how the sun rises over the vast dunes and Hajar mountains surrounding the city, some real eye candy. I got to experience this once in a lifetime adventure with Balloon Adventures Dubai . This company has been offering balloon flights for the last 13 years. It only employs European qualified hot air balloon pilots with lots of flying hours, experience, and knowledge under their belt. In fact, our pilot was happy to share a few interesting facts on Dubai desert. He managed to fly over Peregrine falcons, camels, gazelles and we even witnessed the Arabian Oryx in their natural habitat.

Flying over Dubai desert

It all starts really early in the morning when you are picked up from your hotel and taken to the take-off site in the desert, where the balloons are being inflated in the darkness. Then, you go onboard, get the needed safety briefing and take off, ascending to over a km above the earth. The sun rises when you are up in the air, in what is one of the most remarkable experiences ever. And a very photogenic one for that matter too. They fly every day of the week from September until May.

Desert Safari is a must for a first-time visitor

Going on a Dubai Desert Safari with your family offers a unique experience just a few hours away from Dubai. A Dubai Desert Safari trip would have to be booked and they will pick you up from Dubai and bring you to the desert camp.

The experience begins in a 4×4 jeep and dune bashing, where skilled drivers navigate the undulating terrain, creating a sense of excitement and exhilaration. Keep in mind, that this portion might not be suitable for small children. In addition, the beautiful desert landscape provides a scenic backdrop, creating opportunities for family photos. Also, there are a lot of animals in the camp which kids would enjoy seeing such as camels, donkeys, falcons, etc.

Visit the open-roof camp, where you can relax and enjoy cultural activities, such as henna painting, shisha smoking, and trying on traditional attire. In the evening, families can enjoy a buffet dinner featuring traditional Arabic cuisine. Keep in mind that there would not be any alcohol available at the buffet since UAE is a Muslim country. However, there will be soft drinks and juice available.

The meal is accompanied by cultural performances such as belly dancing and traditional music, offering insight into the local heritage. When preparing for a  Dubai Desert Safari , families should opt for comfortable, lightweight clothing made of breathable fabrics such as cotton to help with the desert’s high temperatures. A scarf or shawl can be useful for added sun or wind protection. Also, dont forget to bring high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses and water.

Thanks Raj, glad you enjoyed reading it. Have you been to Dubai or the surrounding areas?

Been to Dubai, very long time back.. I am sure now its totally a differnt world!

I have always been so fond of palaces and forts. The historical heritage that remains confined with those high walls really fascinate me. Al Ain should be perfect for me 🙂

13 Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Last-Minute Holiday (Direct Flights & Easy Visa Process)

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

After years of traveling, you’d expect me to be one heck of an organized traveler- you’d assume I’d always plan trips at least months in advance, always have my visas organized, and be a pro at packing quickly. And, I’m not in the least bit embarrassed to say that you’d be wrong on all three counts. And that’s why I need to be aware of countries to visit from Dubai that are easy to get to.

I’m very much a last-minute or at the most a two-weeks-before planner, and so I often choose to go where I can get visas quickly and easily (on arrival and/or as a UAE resident), or to places for which I already have a multiple entry Schengen visa . And I need at least four hours to pack for any kind of trip because packing light means having to strategize- and that takes time.

So, I get it- I really do, when you say you love to travel, but sometimes just can’t be bothered to plan everything months in advance, sort out itineraries and visas and hotels and everything else, especially if it’s not just you, but a spouse, group or family that’s also counting on you.

I am a professional travel blogger and I still hate the amount of time it takes to organize trips.

No one needs that kind of stress to go on a holiday. And as an Indian passport holder, I know that waiting in anticipation to get your visa in time, is not a pleasant experience at all.

So, if you’re based in Dubai (or the rest of the UAE or elsewhere in the GCC), and the only reason you’ve been putting off a trip is a lack of time and advance planning, I’ve got you covered with this list of countries to visit from Dubai that are great for your next holiday, and that you can get to easily with direct flights and a smooth and easy visa process (especially if you’re a UAE resident, or have a multiple-entry Schengen, UK or US visa) even on a last-minute plan.

By the way, if you’re looking for insider tips about cool restaurants, best cafes in Dubai , romantic hotels in Dubai , attractions and things to do in and around Dubai, and cool day trips from Dubai , join my Dubai Travel Planning Group on Facebook.

Incredible Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday

1. azerbaijan.

Still a largely off-the-beaten-path destination in the Caucasus (especially when you consider all the attention that Georgia gets), Azerbaijan is a country by the Caspian Sea that lies on the ancient Silk Road in Central Asia, a place that since it’s ancient origins has welcomed travelers and cultures from around the world. And it’s one of the lesser-known but still amazing countries to visit from Dubai.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

Some of the best places to visit on a short trip include Baku, the fire temple-museum of Ateshgah and the rock carvings at the UNESCO Site of Qobustan National Park, Tufandagh Mountain Resort (for snow, views and skiing) and Qabala (to see beautiful nature), and the crafts village of Lahic.

The capital Baku is a modern city also home to an old town, known as Icherisheher that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with sights such as The Maiden Tower, Palace of the Shirvanshahs, mosques, and caravanserais- guesthouses for merchants who arrived by sea.

In contrast to this, you’ll find Gothic, Renaissance and Art Noveau architecture (from the oil boom period) and modern buildings with fluid lines such as The Flame Towers and the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center designed by architect Zaha Haddid.

In Baku, you’ll find great local and international restaurants and cafés, lively squares and promenades, theaters, galleries and museums, bars and nightlife, and shopping in boutiques, markets and malls. Azerbaijani cuisine is delicious and rich, and one of the highlights of any trip to Azerbaijan is tasting the fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. Azerbaijan also has a rich heritage of arts and crafts, and Azerbaijani carpets are so rich, unique and intricate, you’ll never have seen anything like them.

If you have more time, Azerbaijan has some truly awe-inspiring landscapes that you can see in places such as Qabala, Yengija forest and Nohur Lake, as well as spa hotels for a relaxing getaway surrounded by nature.

Why Go: For cosmopolitan Baku, ski and snow resort in Tufandagh, quaint villages, great hospitality, delicious food, and nature.

When to Go: Azerbaijan is a year-round destination. The best times to go are during spring, summer and fall, so between February/March and October. Winter has its own appeal- you can go skiing in the mountains (such as in Tufandagh) or experience traditional sporting events in Sheki.

How to Get There: If arriving by air, you’ll fly into the capital Baku. There are direct flights from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Jeddah, Kuwait, New York, London, Milan, Paris, Prague, Tbilisi, Russia, Turkey, and other Post-Soviet countries in Europe.

If you’re going from Dubai, Flydubai flies directly to Baku, as does Azerbaijan Airlines, at the time of writing. Use my favorite flight search site Skyscanner to look for flights to Baku .

There are also rail connections with Tbilisi and Russia and bus connections with Georgia , Turkey and Russia.

Visa for Azerbaijan: E-visas are now available for Azerbaijan. You can check your eligibility and apply here or here .

If you’re a UAE resident, have at least six months left on your UAE resident visa and your passport, and have return tickets booked, then you can get visa on arrival in Azerbaijan (at the time of writing). It’s always best to check current visa rules before you travel .

Where to Stay in Baku: Dinamo Hotel Baku is a luxurious sports-themed hotel with a fantastic restaurant and bar, great breakfast, and stylish rooms in a historic building close to sights of interest and attractions.

To stay in the heart of nature at a spa resort, consider the Qafqaz Thermal Spa and Resort .

If you live in Dubai, then you probably know someone- a friend or relative or colleague who has been to Georgia. Georgia sees a lot of tourists from the Middle East and is one of the most popular countries to visit from Dubai, especially during the Eid holidays. All of this attention is rightly deserved.

Abanotubani, Tbilisi Old Town: 10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

Georgia’s capital Tbilisi is both charming and eclectic. There’s an old town with hilltop churches, a fortress, winding lanes and backstreets with run-down buildings and old architecture with beautiful colorful balconies. Soviet-style compounds give way to houses and art cafés, women bake bread in basement bakeries, and artists sell their wares in parks.

Flea markets, garden, busy squares, sulphur baths, fascinating architecture, theater, and opera and ballet- these are just some of the things you can experience in Tbilisi. Here’s my ultimate guide to Tbilisi that you’ll find useful if you plan to spend a short break or a few days in the city.

Watch My Video of Tbilisi

Georgian cuisine is delicious , hearty and affordable- think Georgian pizza or khachapuri- freshly baked bread topped with cheese, eggs and other toppings, flavorsome khinkali- soup dumplings, succulent kebabs, and lobio, a comforting stew of kidney beans, onions, and herbs.

Further away, are the remarkable mountain landscapes of Svaneti (great for hiking), and Kazbegi and Gudauri (where you can go paragliding and skiing), and mystical cave cities (Vardzia) that still house monks, churches and monasteries. If you like beaches, it’s worth exploring Batumi , and finally, let’s not forget the wine region of Kakheti. Georgia claims to be the birthplace of wine, and well, the wine really is something special. You can do a winery tour in Kakheti where you can go wine tasting.

It’s worth mentioning that Georgians are very warm and friendly, and as an Indian, I had a great experience while traveling around Georgia .

When to Go: Spring, summer, fall and winter. Late spring (mid-April and May) and early summer are best to go hiking. Summer (July and August) can be very hot and humid, but it’s still a good time to go to the coastal region of Batumi, or hiking in regions that otherwise are inaccessible due to snow in winter.

September-October or fall is a good time to see the changing colors or the wine harvest season. Visit in winter if you want to go skiing in Gudauri, or don’t mind the cold and want to experience Christmas traditions. Given how close Tbilisi is to Dubai, you can easily visit on a long weekend with little planning.

Mestia, Svaneti Georgia

How to Get There: The easiest way to get to Georgia is to fly to Tbilisi. There are direct flights from Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Moscow, Baku, Munich, Vienna , Amsterdam, Paris, London, Frankfurt, Tel-Aviv, Athens, Kiev, Astana, and other Post-Soviet countries.

Look for flights to Georgia from Dubai .

You can also travel to Tbilisi via bus or road from Baku and Yerevan .

Visa for Georgia: Georgia now issues e-visa making it easy for tourists to come to Georgia. Check eligibility and apply here or here . If you aren’t sure, check the visa regime with your country here.

If you’re a UAE resident, then you’re eligible to get a visa on arrival if you have at least six months left on your resident visa and passport and have return tickets booked. But like I always say, these things can change quickly, so best to check visa rules just before you go.

In 2016-17, there were reports of Indians being denied entry into the country even when they had e-visas/visas. I cannot comment on this because with me visiting as an Indian passport holder with a UAE resident visa and Schengen multiple-entry visa, it was a smooth process.

Where to Stay in Tbilisi: From hostels for budget travelers and very affordable apartments to family-run and boutique hotels and fancy luxury hotels, Tbilisi offers plenty of choices for accommodation.

From my experience, I can recommend Falcon Apartments Rustaveli , one of many places I stayed at during my month long visit. You can also look for more options below or read in detail about my advice on where to stay in my Tbilisi guide .

You can probably tell that I love the Caucasus, and Armenia is the third country from the region that I highly recommend for an easy last-minute and oh-so-cheap holiday from Dubai. Armenia is home to dramatic mountain landscapes that seem like they were painted, fantastic hiking trails, medieval monasteries, and the capital Yerevan- an intriguing modern city with plenty of art, culture, museums and sights to keep you busy on a short break.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

Considering how close it is to Dubai, I’m surprised that it’s not more popular as one of the top places to visit from Dubai.

For nightlife in Yerevan, expect wine bars, jazz bars, underground bars, and rooftop bars, and a mix of laidback casual bars, places with live music and dancing, as well as nicer, sophisticated bars in fancy hotels.

While in Yerevan, you absolutely should take one evening to watch opera or ballet at the Armenian National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet. We watched a grand ballet from front row seats at tickets that cost only $10 each!

Yerevan also has good shopping if you’re into brands and such, also local designer boutiques, and you can get a nice chunk of your money back at the airport as shopping above a certain amount is tax-free.

Apart from exploring Yerevan, and really taking it all in slowly while you enjoy the amazing restaurants and local food as well as wine bars (the local wines are great), you can also take day trips to Lake Sevan, Geghard Monastery, Debed Canyon. If you love nature and hiking, don’t think twice before keeping a day or two to visit and explore Dilijan National Park.

The best part? Yerevan isn’t nearly as crowded as Tbilisi, and it feels more modern and European than Tbilisi as well- if you’re after that sort of vibe.

Why Go: To enjoy city life, art and culture, good food and wine, nightlife, and shopping in Yerevan, to take day trips to see nature and monasteries, and to go hiking in Dilijan National Park.

When to Go: Late spring is pleasant and in late April-May, temperatures are between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius with sunny days. Nights can occasionally be chilly (10 to 12 degrees Celsius) with some rainy evenings.

In summer, between June and August you can expect daytime temperatures between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius, which is still pleasant, if you’re coming from Dubai. Fall, in September and October is also a good time to visit for mild weather and too see beautiful autumn foliage. Winters in Yerevan can be cold and snowy, but you can still visit if you’re after that kind of weather and a bit of skiing.

How to Get There: You’ll likely fly into Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan if you’re coming by air. There are direct flight connections from Dubai , Sharjah, Athens, Beirut, Berlin, Istanbul, Moscow, Paris, Tbilisi, Vienna and Warsaw, among others. Flydubai offers cheap flights to Yerevan. You can also look for other options here .

There are also bus connections with Tbilisi , Georgia, as well as train connections with Tbilisi and Batumi in Georgia.

Visa for Armenia: Many nationalities are exempt from visa to enter Armenia. Check the visa rules for your nationality here . If you need to get a visa, check if you’re eligible for an e-visa or check rules and apply here .

If you’re a UAE resident, and have a return ticket, and six months left on your UAE residency and passport, then you’re eligible to get a visa on arrival in Yerevan. As always, these things can and do change quickly, so check visa requirements just before your trip. But the ease of getting a visa on arrival for UAE residents, without question, was one of the main reasons Ankit and I booked a last-minute trip to Yerevan (we booked just four days before our date of departure).

Where to Stay in Yerevan: In Yerevan, you’ll find hostels, apartments, budget hotels and luxury hotel chains. Look for accommodation options here:

In my opinion, Istanbul is one of the greatest cities in the world-its perfection evident the very moment you lay eyes upon it for the first time with the silhouettes of the  Hagia Sophia  and the Blue Mosque standing proud by the  Bosphorus straddling two continents . Being in Turkey cannot be compared to being elsewhere in Asia, the Middle East or anywhere else for that matter. Without a doubt, Turkey is one of the best places to visit from Dubai on holiday.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

Turkey’s landscapes are unbelievable and a photographer’s dream- you only need to lay eyes on  Cappadocia  or  Pamukkale  to know this is true. And history is everywhere; in the old town of Istanbul, the  underground cave cities in Cappadocia  and  the ruins of Ephesus . Turkish  food is incredible  so be prepared for the extra pounds, as food is a real highlight.

Istanbul is the kind of city where you’re surrounded by historical and cultural treasures, where friendly sellers will offer you a cup of tea when you walk through old market lanes on a warm evening, where you can joins the local to eat simple fish sandwiches seaside, drink beer in bars that spill out on the streets, and dance the night away at one of the city’s fancy nightclubs- all in one day.

There’s also good shopping in Istanbul- clear from the fact that most locals look like they’ve stepped out of the pages of a Zara lookbook, with many Turkish designers selling clothing and shoes in stylish boutiques quietly tucked away in backstreets.

When to Go: Spring (March to June) and Autumn (September-October) are the busiest seasons for Turkey because of great weather and long days with little or no rain. Summer (June to September) can be quite hot, but that means you’ll also find less crowds and more reasonable prices.

I visited in winter (December) and while winter (November to February) can be chilly and a bit rainy, that’s the time I fell in love with Turkey. Also, winter sees much fewer crowds and easy availability for hotels, plus lesser crowds in places such as Cappadocia as well.

How to Get There: Turkey offers flight connections to Dubai , Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi, as well as the US, UK, Thailand, Japan, and European cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Milan, Vienna, and others through its airports in Ankara, Antalya, Izmir and Istanbul, with Istanbul offering the best connectivity.

Look for flights to Turkey :

Turkey also has rail connections with London and some other European cities such as Budapest and Sofia . There are also ferries from Greece and Cyprus.

Visa for Turkey:

Check your visa eligibility and rules for travel to Turkey. If you’re eligible for one, you can apply for an e-visa here .

If you’re going to Turkey from Dubai, you’ll need to apply through VFS, read the visa application requirements and process here .

Where to Stay in Istanbul: In Istanbul, you’ll find hostels, apartments, boutique and family-run hotels as well as major international hotel chains.

5. Sri Lanka

Pristine palm-fringed beaches, whale-watching in the Indian Ocean, fortified cities with colonial architecture, cave temples and lush forests, hiking trails , an ancient Ayurveda heritage, wellness resorts , vibrant festivals , and spotting leopards in the wild on safari , these are just some of the diverse experiences you can have in Sri Lanka . This amazing island nation is one of the coolest places to visit from Dubai especially if you’re looking for a cheap holiday.

Things to do in South Sri Lanka

While the nature is definitely a highlight, one of the things that stands out about the country when you visit is the hospitality and friendliness of Sri Lankans, whether it’s is the cities or in the beach towns. The unique cuisine is another highlight. Expect seasonal dishes with fresh fruits and vegetables, delicious seafood preparations and plenty of flavors and spices, as well as street food.

Watch my Video of Safari in Sri Lanka

When to Go: November to March-April is the best time to visit Sri Lanka, specially if you want to avoid the sweltering summer temperatures, humidity and the rains.

How to Get There: The best way to get to Sri Lanka is to fly to the capital Colombo. There are direct flight connections from Dubai , Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Jeddah, many Indian cities, Maldives, London, Melbourne, Seychelles, Tokyo, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, Jakarta and other cities in the Middle East and Asia.

Look for other flight options.

Visa for Sri Lanka: Many nationalities are eligible for the Sri Lanka e-visa . If you’re eligible, you can apply for it online to get an authorization letter before you arrive.

Where to Stay in Sri Lanka: Around Sri Lanka, you’ll find several incredible and unique properties- from luxurious safari villas and beachfront resorts, to luxury treehouses, Ayurveda wellness resorts and family-run boutique hotels and guesthouses.

If you like beaches, consider Cinnamon Hikka Tranz or Cinnamon Bey Beruwala . If you’re looking for a health focused retreat, consider the Siddhalepa Ayurveda Resort . One of the highlights of my last trip was to stay in a safari villa at Cinnamon Wild Yala .

If you live in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE, and still haven’t taken the time to explore Oman, then you need to change that right away. Right next door to the UAE, but vastly different in terms of both landscapes and culture, Oman offers a taste of slow living in the Middle East. Understandably, it is one of the best countries to visit from Dubai, and many tourists visiting the UAE also combine it with a trip to Oman.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

While the capital Muscat is a modern city, it’s not the kind that needs escaping from- it’s neither overly commercial, nor touristy. Sights in Muscat include the Muttrah Souk, a traditional restored market where you’ll find souvenirs such as beautiful lamps, silver Omani daggers called khanjar , frankincense, oud perfume, traditional attire, and more, Al Alam Palace- the Sultan’s palace, the Royal Opera House, and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Other cities such as Nizwa are also great in that they feel very authentic.

If you like nature and activities, then you’ll love exploring sights such as Wadi Bani Khalid and Wadi Shab, the lush green landscapes of Salalah, and go hiking through Omani villages, rugged wadis and along terraced farms in Jabal Akhdar (something you can do when you stay at the Alila Jabal Akhdar ), that can be cooler than Muscat by at least 15 degrees Celsius around the year.

If you’re visiting Oman with family, you might be interested in my review of the family-friendly Millennium Resort Mussanah .

Watch my Video of Hiking in Jebel Akhdar

When to Go: Oman is a year-round destination and if you’re visiting from Dubai, then it might be a great idea to head to the mountains in Jabal Akhdar or to Salalah, both of which are likely to be much cooler than Dubai and Muscat.

How to Get There: The best and quickest way to get to Oman is to fly into Muscat or Salalah. Muscat offers connections to several international cities worldwide.

Look for flights to Muscat or Salalah from Dubai.

You can also get to Oman from Dubai by road, crossing the border in either Hatta, Buraimi or the Dibba transitional border, depending on where in Oman you’re going.

Visa for Oman:

Oman offers e-visas for many nationalities. Check your eligibility and apply for an e-visa before you arrive in Oman. If you’re a UAE or GCC resident, you still need to apply for an e-visa depending on the category.

At the time of writing, visas are also issued at the UAE-Oman border in Hatta, but if you’re visiting during a long weekend or a public holiday, then you should know that you’re likely to have to wait for several hours at the border to get your visa issued. On a recent long weekend, a four-hour journey turned into a seven-hour one, thanks to delays and long queues at the visa office at the border.

Where to Stay in Oman: There are some lovely hotels and resorts in Oman, from family-friendly beach resorts such as Millennium Resort Mussanah and the luxurious Six Senses Zighy Bay (perfect for active, beach-loving couples) to Alila Jabal Akhdar (a mountain resort great for those who love hiking or relaxing in nature).

Read my review of Millennium Resort Mussanah and my review of Alila Jabal Akhdar and book here, or look for other options:

7. Maldives

That the Maldives are astoundingly beautiful is no secret- I’m sure you’ve seen photos and drone videos of white sand beaches and overwater villas over turquoise waters. The Maldives are like paradise for beach lovers and those who love diving and snorkeling.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

While there are plenty of luxury resorts in the Maldives, what you might not know is that there are also many guesthouses and boutique hotels that are perfect for independent travelers and those on a budget. So if you’re looking for a cheap holiday from Dubai, it’s very much do-able.

While many tourists choose not to, it’s worth taking a bit of time to explore Male and get a sense of what life is really like for the locals- far removed from the world of luxury resorts on private islands.

Why Go: For paradise-like beaches, snorkeling, diving and water activities, for a romantic getaway, or to go diving.

When to Go: Visit the Maldives from November to March so that daytime temperatures are pleasant and there’s no rainfall to dampen your holiday plans.

India is both diverse and intense, especially if you aren’t South Asian yourself, but as a destination, it’s unlike anywhere else on the planet. India’s diversity is not only in its many cultures, religions and languages, but also in its landscapes.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

While you’ve probably heard of the forts and palaces of Rajasthan ( Jaipur and Udaipur), and the grandeur of Taj Mahal, or the nightlife and beaches of Goa, you might not know that northern India is home to some breathtaking landscapes that hikers will appreciate, whether in Leh-Ladakh or in little hamlets in the Himalayas. Arunachal Pradesh is a great adventure destination with plenty of opportunities to go hiking, biking and rafting.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

In southern India, Kerala is perfect for a bit of downtime in the heart of nature- think traditional houseboats on quiet backwaters that offer a taste of slow rural life in fishing villages. And Indian cities such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Banglaore, Amritsar and Delhi, among others, each have a different kind of vibe and plenty to offer in terms of dining, entertainment, nightlife and shopping.

My biggest piece of advice, if you’re thinking of traveling to India on a short trip (even a week is short for India) is to pick one region and visit at the most two to three places during that time that are close to each other geographically.

Traveling in India is intense- everything from the language barrier to arranging your own transportation and getting to places can be challenging- you don’t want to get burnt out on your holiday by trying to do too much in limited time.

On the plus side, India is close to Dubai, and it isn’t expensive- so it’s ideal if you’re looking for a cheap holiday from Dubai.

Why Go: For bucketlist sights such as the Taj Mahal, for mountain towns and villages in the Himalayas, for bustling cities, for palaces and forts, for adventure off-the-beaten-path and to relax in southern India.

When to Go: Visit between October and March to avoid hot, humid weather and the monsoons.

How to Get There: You can fly into major Indian cities from around the world and there are direct flights from Dubai .

Look for flights to India.

Visa for India: To arrange a visa for India, you’ll have to plan well in advance, as it can take longer than expected. I’m Indian and don’t need a visa but from what I hear from friends of other nationalities, Indian visas can be well, a time-consuming process.

Check eligibility and see if you can get an online visa for India . Also, I suggest making a few calls to the Indian consular services in your country of residence to check the best way to get a visa for India where you live.

Where to Stay in India:

While the might Everest and epic Himalayan views are certainly Nepal’s biggest draw, Nepal is a country that isn’t just for trekkers and hardcore adventurers, but also for those interested in cultural experiences in medieval cities with rich heritage- such as Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur . With regular flights, it’s one of the best countries to visit from Dubai.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

Nepal is full of spiritual experiences- temples, monasteries and easy trails in the Kathmandu Valley that are nothing short of therapeutic. It was here that I fell in love with hiking and I didn’t even make it to legendary trails such as the Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Trail.

Elsewhere, Nepal offers plenty of opportunities to step outside your comfort zone, whether it’s to go rafting in its wild rivers or bungee jump or paraglide. If you’ve always dreamt of going on safari, then visit Chitwan National Park.

The Nepalese are a warm, resilient people- eager to bounce back after the effects of the 2014-2015 earthquakes. Around the country, you’ll find English is spoken quite a bit, and even where there isn’t outside of the main tourist areas, you’ll find the locals to be so helpful- they’ll be willing to go out of their way to help.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

Religion is important in everyday life- and even if like me, you aren’t religious, you’ll find yourself intrigued. Nepalese food is great too- comforting dal bhat and tasty momos (dumplings) and hearty soups- just the kind of thing you need after a long day of exploring.

Considering how budget-friendly Nepal is, it’s one of the best places to visit from Dubai, on a cheap holiday.

When to Go: Autumn (September to November) and Spring (February to late April) are the best times to visit weather-wise. Best to avoid the pre-monsoons and monsoons and the chilly winter season, especially if you want to spend time exploring outdoors (and really you will because that’s where the main draws are).

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

How to Get There: You’ll have to fly into the country’s only international airport close to Kathmandu. There are direct flights from Dubai , Sharjah, Delhi, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Mumbai and Bangalore.

Also search for other flight options here.

Visa for Nepal: Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival in Nepal once they arrive at the international airport. Check your eligibility and visa rules and if you need to, you can apply here .

Where to Stay in Nepal:

Where you’ll stay will largely be dependent on the type of activities you’re hoping to do. While you can stay in Kathmandu for city life, and to do daytrips to places such as Bhaktapur, Bodhanath and Patan, you can also choose to stay a few days each in other places such as Pokhara where you’ll be closer to hiking trails and nature spots.

Look for accommodation in Nepal here:

I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again- there is no other feeling in the world that compares to when you see the ancient Nabataean capital of Petra in Jordan for the first time. I don’t know what time travel feels like, but it must not be very different from what it feels like walking through the Siq, a swirling 1km long canyon with smooth sandstone walls that leads to the rose-colored Treasury or Al Khazneh. That alone is reason enough for Jordan to be on this list of top countries to visit from Dubai.

A Road trip across Jordan: 10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

Whether you spend just a day seeing a bit of Petra, or spend two to three days hiking there, or decide to stay overnight and see it lit up after sunset, Petra is the kind of place that will leave you awestruck. Further away, the desert of Wadi Rum, where you can follow in the camel tracks of Lawrence of Arabia , feels like you’ve arrived on another planet where the landscape is just sand dunes shining under a glimmering moon.

If you love hiking, then the Jordan Trail is a relatively new 600km long trail that you can either hike entirely over 40 days or hike parts of to see the country’s rich and diverse landscapes.

If you love the sea, then you’ll love the coastal town of Aqaba where sunny days, diving, snorkeling, boat rides and fresh seafood await. Floating in the Dead Sea is, of course, another one of Jordan’s bucket list experiences. The capital Amman is full of character with Roman ruins, low-rises, residential districts, markets, mosques, cafés, art galleries and bars, as well as plenty of restaurants serving international and local food.

When to Go: To be able to explore outdoors, visit Jordan in either Autumn (September to November) or Spring (March to May). In Summer (June to August), the days are long and sunny but the temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius, which might be a tad too much if you’re not used to it.

How to Get There: You’ll fly either into Amman or Aqaba. There are direct flights to Amman from Dubai , Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Kuwait, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Bangkok, Moscow, Paris, London, New York, Frankfurt, Rome, Vienna and other cities.

Check other flight options here:

Visa for Jordan : Several nationalities are eligible for a visa on arrival in Jordan. Check your eligibility and visa rules here and here .

At the time of writing, Indians are eligible for a visa on arrival in Jordan, but not Filipinos, provided they have a passport that’s valid at least for six months.

Where to Stay in Jordan: I’ve stayed at the Kempinski Ishtar Dead Sea and the Kempinski Aqaba and can recommend both.

11. Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is a Central Asian gem that should be on your bucket list if you have a love of hiking in spectacular landscapes- think turquoise lakes, breathtaking mountains, views to make you forget the notion of time, and overnighting in yurts in the wilderness.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

This is a destination for the intrepid traveler who cherishes the opportunity to experience local immersion, culture, and the many benefits of community-based tourism. Given how easy it is to get to from Dubai, it’s one of the best countries to visit from Dubai for adventure and nature lovers.

When to Go: June to September- summer is ideal for hiking.

How to Get There: You can fly to the capital Bishkek via Dubai, Istanbul, Tashkent, Almaty and Moscow.

Look for flights to Bishkek .

Visa for Kyrgyzstan: Many nationalities do not need a visa to enter Kyrgyzstan for 60 days, while others can get a visa on arrival. Yet others, including Indians, are eligible for e-visa . Check your visa eligibility and rules .

Where to Stay in Kyrgyzstan:

12. Seychelles

Like the Maldives, the Seychelles are the ideal destination for vacationers who like the idea of time in an island paradise with azure waters, gorgeous beaches and days filled with diving, snorkeling and downtime on the sand.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

If you’re looking to get away from it all, or go on honeymoon or babymoon, then you will love the Seychelles. There are various resorts that you can choose to stay in depending on your preferences and availability.

The best part? It’s a visa-free country so if you find affordable flights and accommodation, then it’s super easy to organize a last-minute trip. This is one of the big reasons why it’s one of the best countries to visit from Dubai, especially for those of us who need to apply for a visa to go anywhere.

Why Go: To vacation in an island paradise and enjoy snorkeling, diving, watersports and hiking on forest trails.

When to Go: The Seychelles are a year-round destination and April to November is an ideal time to visit.

How to Get There: You’ll fly into Mahe, the entry point to the other islands in the Seychelles. There are direct flights from Dubai , Abu Dhabi, London, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Paris and other cities.

Look for flights to the Seychelles.

Visa for Seychelles: Seychelles is a visa- free country and anyone can enter visa-free as long as they have a valid passport, onward tickets booked and sufficient funds to cover their stay.

An under-the-radar island in East Asia, Taiwan offers a surprisingly diverse mix of experiences ; beautiful national parks and mountainous scenic areas with hiking trails and few visitors, indigenous cultures rich in tradition, art and crafts, delicious cuisines from the mountains and coast, and cities that are effortlessly cool, fashionable, hipster, arty, and intriguing, all at once.

Read my week-long itinerary for Taiwan .

From national parks, cherry blossoms and indigenous culture to food & art in the cities, see the best of Taiwan in a week with this 8-day Taiwan itinerary. Here are the very best things to do and places to visit in Taiwan plus practical information to help you plan your trip. #Taiwan #Taiwantravel #timeforTaiwan #heartofAsia

Then there’s Taipei- a city that changed the way I thought of Asian capitals. None of the chaos, none of the crowds- calm, laidback, trendy, modern and orderly, Taipei is the kind of city you don’t need to escape from. Plus there are tons of cool things to do in Taipei .

There’s culture in the art galleries, delicious food in Taipei’s night markets , districts and cultural parks, shopping from designer boutiques and international chains to pop-up stores, and a dining scene that includes Michelin-starred restaurants, street food, and hole-in-the-wall places serving traditional and local food. For nightlife, expect eclectic bars, trendy wine bars, slick rooftop bars, speakeasy bars and nightclubs for every taste.

Watch my Video of Taiwan

Further away, nature lovers will appreciate the quiet hiking trails and sublime mountaintop sunrises in the Alishan National Scenic Area, as well as the cherry blossoms that adorn the country’s landscapes from January to April.

It’s also worth timing your visit around the Taiwan Lantern Festival, held in a different city each year where thousands of lanterns, created by local and international artists, around traditional and modern themes, light up the sky, land and water and attract locals and tourists from around the world. In 2020, the Taiwan Lantern Festival will be held from 8 th to 23 rd February 2020 in Taichung.

And the people? Friendly, respectful, welcoming (also of diversity) and so polite they put the rest of the world to shame. In fact, Taiwan is a Muslim-friendly country with several Muslim-friendly hotels and restaurants serving halal food and the availability of prayer rooms and mats around the country. This is why it’s on my list of the best countries to visit from Dubai- because Taiwan is making travel more accessible for Muslims.

When to Go: The best times to visit are Spring (March to May), that is also a good time to see the cherry blossoms, and Autumn (October and November). Winter (December to February) is also a good time if you don’t mind the chilly nighttime temperatures.

How to Get There: There are direct flights to Taipei from several Asian cities and others such as Dubai and Istanbul. Look for flight options from Dubai and elsewhere here:

Visa for Taiwan: Depending on your nationality, you may or may not need a visa to visit Taiwan . Some nationalities can get a visa on arrival, others need to get an e-visa and yet others need to apply in person in their own countries.  Check your visa eligibility and rules here .

Family Travel in the Middle East

11 Incredible new short breaks from Abu Dhabi

With the announcement this year of two new budget airlines to commence operating out of Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) – Wizz Air and Air Arabia Abu Dhabi – we’re taking a deeper look into what this means for family travellers out of the UAE – could it be true, return tickets to Eastern Europe & the Caucasus for under 300AED?

Short Breaks from Abu Dhabi with Wizz Air

One-way fares are advertised with Wizz Air as “starting from 129 AED ” and, as you may expect of budget airlines, timetables are not daily and carry-on luggage should be expected without additional fees.

We previously shared the launch dates of five new routes with WizzAir ( Budapest , Bucharest , Cluj-Napoca , Katowice & Sofia ). Subsidiary WizzAir Abu Dhabi has now announced a further six routes to complement this offering from the start of October 2020 – Alexandria , Athens , Kutaisi , Larnaca , Odessa & Yerevan .

OK, even we had to pull out Google Maps for some of these fabulous new destinations! We’ve called on our travel blogger friends to help us out why you should come and explore these new WizzAir routes from Abu Dhabi.

Let’s get set to fly again when borders open!

Alexandria, Egypt

Fly with WizzAir – from 2 October Mon, Wed & Fri

short travel from uae

Why you’ll want to visit Alexandria: A short trip to Alexandria, Egypt, is a must-do for any history lover. The library of Alexandria is an incredible place to spend a day pouring over the endless tome of titles, exploring the museum of antiquities, and enjoying the family-friendly programs on offer there.

The following day could be filled with a tour of the breathtaking Pompey’s pillars that demonstrate the Roman influence in Egypt at the time, followed by a trip to the citadel of Qaitbay to marvel at the ancient fort overlooking the Mediterranean.

Speaking of the Mediterranean, no trip to Alexandria would be complete without a stroll along its picturesque seaside “corniche” walkway.

Where to stay in Alexandria

Stay at the Four Seasons for a high-end luxury experience or the Hilton Alexandria Corniche for a nice mid-range hotel. The Steigenberger Cecil hotel is a more budget-friendly option with a pool.

With thanks to Thea from Zen Travellers for sharing these suggestions

You can see our complete guide on visiting Alexandria from Cairo – with detailed suggestions what to do with kids on a day in Alexandria.

Athens, Greece

short travel from uae

Why you’ll want to visit Athens: Athens is one of the top bucket list destinations anywhere in the world. A visit to the Parthenon is an experience everyone should have if they can. In just a few days, you can see some of the most famous historic sites in the world, enjoy delicious Greek cuisine, and even get a taste of the Greek island life with a quick trip to one of the closer islands.

If you love visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites , there are six located either in the city or reachable as day trips, so you won’t be at a loss for what to do. In Athens proper, you can see the Acropolis of Athens and the  Monastery of Daphni.  You can also take day trips to Delphi, Mycenae, Epidaurus, and even Meteora.

Where to stay in Athens

For accommodations, you can choose to stay at the Fivos Hotel in Monastiraki. For luxury accommodations, check into the nearby Emporikon Athens Hotel .

With thanks to Stephanie from History Fan Girl for sharing these suggestions.

Budapest, Hungary

Fly with WizzAir – from 3 June Wed & Sun (after 30 Sept will move to Mon, Wed & Fri)

Budapest city view

Why you’ll want to visit Budapest: The Hungarian capital Budapest is a true gem. For me it is a mix of Tel Aviv’s coolness with Berlin’s edginess. Above all, it is special. Budapest is divided into two parts – Buda and Pest. Whereas Buda is the rather touristy one, Pest is where you find the cool bars, restaurants and alleys to get lost in.

To get an overview of the city, taking the Cogwheel train from Városmajor up the Széchenyi mountain is the best you can do.

Also, it is definitely good fun for the kids as this old cog railway is a highlight in itself. Once you are on top of the mountain, get the typical Hungarian dessert Kürtöskalacs before you make your way to the children train Gyermekvasút. This whole train is operated by kids – from the train conductor over the ticket person to the ones lifting the cabinets. Apart from the fun of actually being on the train, you will also make your way through perfect nature before you take the chair lift down to the city again.

Where to stay in Budapest

Try Barceló Budapest for something beautiful, or if you’re travelling on a budget try Hotel Memories .

With thanks to Clemens Sehi & Anne Steinbach from travellersarchive.de for these suggestions.

Bucharest, Romania

short travel from uae

Why you’ll want to visit Bucharest: A beautiful Eastern European city with “Europe’s Newest Old Town” you will feel vibes from the Orient and the Baltic, along with plenty of touches from a bygone Soviet era. The laneways and wide boulevards, however, will leave you with a distinctly Parisienne feel too.

A sightseeing weekend to Bucharest will likely see you visit the People’s Palace (which includes the Museum of Contemporary Art) and a walking tour through many of the city’s beautiful parks – Herastrau Park and Cismigiu Park are a must.

You can spend hours wandering the streets of the Old Town; hidden laneways, bars and restaurants, and beautiful churches, and seek out the giant bookstore Carturesti Carusel. Check out the night vibes from Pura Vida Sky Bar on an adult’s trip.

Bucharest is also a great place to fly into for a road trip around Transylvania . Children will delight in the legend of Dracula and some of the most utterly stunning medieval villages, fortified churches and dramatic castles.

Where to stay in Bucharest

Try the  Athenee Palace Hilton Bucharest  with large suites, close to the heart of the action, or our value pick  Ramada Bucharest Majestic Hotel

With thanks to Keri Hedrick from Our Globetrotters for these suggestions.

Cluj-Napoca, Romania

Fly with Wizz Air – from 16 September Wed & Sun

short travel from uae

Why you’ll want to visit Cluj-Napoca: Cluj Napoca is the second-largest city in Romania and the unofficial capital of Transylvania. It has a long history, as a Roman colony by the name of Napoca was here 2000 years ago and it changed rulers a few times throughout the centuries. The legacy from its Austro-Hungarian Empire is visible everywhere, in the beautiful architecture and impressive churches.

But beyond all that history, Cluj is now a vibrant university city. People in Cluj are relaxed and welcoming.

Visit Saint Michael Church, a Gothic Catholic Cathedral in the center of the city and The Assumption Orthodox Cathedral in Avram Iancu Plaza. Discover the beautiful Botanical Garden in Cluj and rest in one of the many cafés in Museum Plaza. The city has a busy events calendar, music, sports, and all types of international fairs.

Where to stay in Cluj-Napoca

A great accommodation option is Hotel Beyfin , perfectly situated across the Orthodox Cathedral which has a stunning rooftop terrace. A more budget-friendly option is Hotel Fullton , also situated close to everything in the city center.

With thanks to for Anda from Travel For A While these suggestions.

Katowice, Poland

Fly with Wizz Air – from 15 September Tue & Sat (from 24 October Mon & Fri)

short travel from uae

Why you’ll want to visit Katowice: As a mid-size city in Poland and a growing tourist destination, Katowice has become an attractive and family-friendly city to visit when traveling to Poland.  Known as a miner’s town throughout the 19th century, Katowice has grown rapidly and includes museums, theaters, parks and a variety of entertainment venues as some of its must-see places in the city.

The Spodek arena will likely have an event for families as there are dozens of recreational attractions throughout the year.  Kosciuszko Park, located in the heart of the city, has beautiful flower gardens and a lot of green space for families to picnic or simply stroll around and take in the beauty.

If your family is up for it, spend a day at Poland’s largest permanent amusement park, Legendia.  With nearly 40 attractions and 26 hectares of land, the theme park is family-friendly and regularly boasts new attractions opening up.

Katowice also has smaller attractions for families such as a trampoline park and play places for smaller children.

Where to stay when visiting Katowice

Be sure to take a look at Hotel Vienna House Easy Katowice which has won certificates for being family-friendly or Hotel Monopol which has an indoor pool, always a hit with kids.

With thanks to Diana from Travels in Poland for these suggestions

Kutaisi, Georgia

Fly with WizzAir – from 1 October Thu & Sun

Kutaisi - Bagrati Cathedral

Why you’ll want to visit Kutaisi: Though it is the third-largest city in Georgia and home to one of the country’s busiest airports, Kutaisi is often overlooked as a tourist destination with visitors flocking instead to the cosmopolitan vibes of Tbilisi, the Black Sea coast of Batumi or the splendours of the High Caucasus. However, Kutaisi has a lot to offer travellers, and it is well-worth spending a couple of days in Kutaisi when visiting Georgia.

The city of Kutaisi itself is well worth exploring — make sure to take in sites like the fantastic Green Bazaar, one of the most dynamic marketplaces in the country, wander through the lovely botanical garden and visit the historic Bagrati Cathedral. There are also a number of great day trips from Kutaisi that are worth doing, including to the incredible Prometheus Cave, the gorgeous Motsameta Monastery and the UNESCO-list Gelati Monastery, located only a few kilometres outside of Kutaisi’s city centre.

Where to stay in Kutaisi

As for accommodation, one of the best ways to get to know the famous Georgian hospitality is to stay at a family-run guesthouse — and this happens to be a fantastic budget option, as well. Pospolita Guesthouse , located close to the white bridge within walking distance of the city centre, is an excellent choice. If you’re looking for something with a bit more luxury, the Best Western Kutaisi is a good option, as well.

With thanks to Maggie from The World was Here First for sharing these suggestions

Larnaca, Cyprus

Fly with WizzAir – from 3 October Tue & Sat

short travel from uae

Why you’ll want to visit Larnaca:

Larnaca is one of the largest cities in Cyprus, and when I say that, I don’t mean it’s a large city at all. Anyway, the place has a bit of everything, and you could easily spend a long weekend in Larnaca.

The obvious attraction is the sandy beach lined with palm trees. The water is clear and shallow, which makes it perfect to spend time with the family there. Just, don’t forget the sunscreen.

When you’re tired of the beach, visit St. Lazarus Church in the square with the same name. The stone church is a beautiful example of Byzantine architecture and it hosts the remains of Saint Lazarus, the man resurrected by Jesus. The square around the church is very pleasant, lined with nice restaurants and coffee shops.

Another place you should visit is Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque, about 3 km from Larnaca, just by the Salt Lake. This is also the place to see pink flamingoes if you visit Cyprus in winter.

Where to stay in Larnaca

You can stay just by the sea at Radisson Blu Hotel or choose a budget-friendly option, Alkisti City Hotel located in St. Lazarus Church square.

With thanks to Anda from Travel for a While for these suggestions

Odesa, Ukraine

short travel from uae

Why you’ll want to visit Odesa: Odesa , the main seaside destination in Ukraine, is such a great place to visit. Located on the shore of the Black Sea, the city offers many attractions for each taste. The old part of the city is a jigsaw of charming streets, lined with old trees, beautiful houses, and interesting courtyards that are easy to miss.

The heart of the city is the pedestrian Deribasovskaya street, with a vibrant atmosphere until late night hours. Odessa is also home to one of the most beautiful opera houses, where you can attend the show for a very affordable price.

Those who want to relax at the beach can do it in Odessa too – there are numerous sandy beaches you can enjoy, some of them are very close to the center. You can even use the old, rusty Soviet cable-car to get to the beach, it will be a thrilling experience for sure but the views along the way are stunning.

Odessa is a great place to visit , and also a great value for the price; you will spend significantly less here than in Western Europe and will have a great holiday for sure!

Where to stay in Odessa

There are plenty of accommodation options to choose from for each taste, from budget like Hostel51 to luxury like Duke Hotel .

With thanks to Kami form My Wanderlust for these suggestions .

Sofia, Bulgaria

Fly with WizzAir – from 15 September Tue & Sat

Sofia Bulgaria

Why you’ll want to visit Sofia: If you’re looking for a quick getaway for a few days, spending a long  weekend in Sofia  is a great way to escape. The city is compact, and most of the important historic sites are within a small walkable core, so you can cover many of the best parts of the city in two or three days.

Make sure to visit the Sofia Central Mineral Baths, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and Vitosha Boulevard. If you want to escape to the country, you can visit two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Boyana Church is on the foot of Vitosha Mountain, and from there you can also hike to the Boyana Waterfall. Or you can visit Rila Monastery, which is about two hours away in the beautiful Rila Mountains.

Where to stay in Sofia

If you want to stay in a lovely hotel, Sense Hotel has the best views in the city. If you want a more budget-friendly place to stay, hit up Sense’s Rooftop Bar but stay at R34 Boutique Hotel nearby.

With thanks to Stephanie Craig from Sofia Adventures for these suggestions.

Yerevan, Armenia

Fly with WizzAir – from 3 October Tues & Sat

short travel from uae

Why you’ll want to visit Yerevan: Yerevan is ideal for a short break. The city is small and easy to see by foot. Start your trip in Republic square and marvel at the incredible stonework that gives Yerevan its nickname, the Pink City.

Look for art in the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, visit the religious site of the Holy Mother of God Kathoghike Church and the Saint Gregory The Illuminator Cathedral, shop in Vernissage and Gum markets, learn about the most recent war in the museum inside the statue of Mother Armenia, and about the country’s tragic past in the Genocide museum. In the latter, you’ll also get amazing views of the city and of Mount Ararat in the background.

If you want to squeeze in a day trip, go to Khor Virap, Geghard or Sevanavank; they’re incredibly picturesque monasteries and absolutely among the best of Armenia .

Where to stay in Yerevan

As for accommodation, for a high-end stay book the Tufenkian Historic Yerevan Hotel . If you’re travelling with a budget but still want comfort and the feel of luxury, go for the Boutique Living Hotel .

With thanks to Coni from Experience the Globe for these suggestions

Industry experts have reported a surge in inquiries and bookings as the long weekend approaches from September 29 (Friday) to October 1.

Travel enthusiasts are in for a treat as they can take a trip with exciting deals starting at just Dh999, to various popular destinations.

Popular travel website Holiday Factory has launched a crazy September sale, offering exciting vacation deals with prices slashed by up to 50 percent for over 20 captivating destinations.

The UAE has announced the official paid holiday to mark the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Since most government employees get Saturday-Sunday off, the holiday translates into a three-day weekend for them. Private sector employees will get Friday off as well since the UAE Cabinet grants the same number of leaves to workers of both private and public sectors.

“With the weekend comprising only three days, the residents are showing a preference for destinations with a short flight's reach. They are opting for packages priced in the range of Dh 2,200, offering affordability and a rejuvenating getaway,” said Raheesh Babu, COO of Musafir.com.

High demand for short getaways

“We have recorded a spike in travel interest among residents. The mini-vacation during this period has prompted many to explore short-haul destinations that are easily accessible from the UAE,” said Rashid Abbas, managing director at Arooha Tours and Travels.

Travel deals

To cater to this surging demand, travel agencies and providers have rolled out a range of attractive travel deals starting at Dh999.

On Holiday Factory, a vacation package in September to Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Turkey is on offer at Dh999. Similarly, there are many other packages starting at Dh 1,199.

“We have observed an incredible surge in demand for travel to Uzbekistan,” said Mika Uhrincova, PR manager at Holiday Factory, adding that attributing this surge to the country's breathtaking landscapes and a new visa-free policy that has resonated with UAE residents.

“With its unique appeal, Uzbekistan is tailor-made for short escapes and rejuvenating long weekend getaways,” added Uhrincova.

Most preferred destinations

According to Babu, the most in-demand destinations during the upcoming long holiday are Krabi, Almaty, Thailand, Baku, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Phuket. “There is no requirement for a visa for the majority of nationalities residing in the UAE,” said Babu.

“Another reason is the cost of the package which is nearly 20 percent cheaper currently. And we have sold out nearly 80 percent of our packages for the long weekend,” added Babu.

Habitual travellers

People have become habituated to travelling and the moment residents hear about an extended weekend, they plan their journey, said Abbas.

“One of the main factors inducing interest for travelling is visa on arrival for UAE residents coupled with affordable packages overseas,” added Abbas.

Traveling to Dubai for the First Time (2024): 19 Tips & Tricks

Traveling to Dubai (United Arab Emirates) for the first time  and not sure where to start? Indeed, planning a trip to Dubai might be overwhelming, even more so if this is your first time in this rapidly growing and continuously changing city!

When is the best time to visit? How much time do you need in Dubai? What are the best areas to stay in and how to travel around? Do you need to pre-book tickets or can you just go with the flow? How to save time and money and still see the best that Dubai has to offer?

Dubai is a city of contrasts, a place where modern extravagance and traditional values go hand in hand. From its towering skyscrapers to its pristine beaches and bustling souks, visiting Dubai is like stepping into a different world…

To help you plan your first trip to this dynamic and unique city, in this guide we share some of our top travel tips for visiting Dubai .

We have visited Dubai several times and all the information and tips in this article are based on our personal experience. Some of these tricks we only learned after several trips…

This practical guide includes all the info I wish we had known before planning a trip to Dubai. These tips will not only help you plan your trip, but will also show you how to make the best of your visit, time, and budget. Find out!

Top 5 Experiences in Dubai:

  • Burj Khalifa (book in advance + opt for the level 148 ticket for priority access).
  • Desert Safari.
  • Museum of the Future (book well in advance!).
  • Luxury Yacht Tour .
  • Abu Dhabi Day Trip .

What to know when traveling to Dubai - practical information and helpful travel tips for visiting Dubai UAE

Here are our top travel tips for visiting Dubai:

1. Avoid Traveling in Summer

Dubai is known for its scorching temperatures, especially during the summer months. To give you an idea, average daytime temperatures during June, July, and August are well over 40°C (104°F). Even in April or November, Dubai temperatures usually still exceed 30°C (86°F).

The best time to visit Dubai is during the winter months – between December and February. The daytime temperatures at this time of the year are usually around 25°C (77°F). So it’s still warm enough to enjoy beaches, pools, and waterparks, but the temperatures are also pleasant for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Good to know: Winter is also the peak tourist season in Dubai. So expect accommodation prices to be higher and more crowds at the main attractions. However, with some advance planning and preparation, you can still have a very enjoyable visit, more than in the summer.

The shoulder season – the months of March-April or October-November – can be a good time to visit Dubai as well. If you don’t mind temperatures of around 30-35°C (86-95°F), you can take advantage of somewhat lower prices and fewer crowds than in the winter.

In addition, you may want to check when Ramadan is. During this month, most Muslims do not eat from sunrise to sunset, so many restaurants will be closed during the day. This may might impact your experience, depending on the places you visit.

TIP: No matter when you visit Dubai, be prepared for the heat by wearing lightweight, breathable clothing, using sun protection, and staying hydrated. Plan outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the peak heat.

2. Book Attraction Tickets in Advance

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when planning a trip to Dubai is not to plan/book attraction tickets in advance.

Booking in advance means more time slots to choose from, better prices, and less time wasted queuing.  After all, you want to make the most of your trip to Dubai and not spend all your precious time standing in lines.

Good to know: Tickets to many popular attractions in Dubai are often sold out at least a few days in advance. Furthermore, many tickets are cheaper if booked online. In addition, some attraction tickets, e.g. Atlantis Aquaventure , cost less if you book at least a week before your visit.

For some places, not reserving in advance means that you won’t be able to visit at all.  For example, the Museum of the Future is so popular that all tickets are usually sold out at least 2-3 weeks upfront. If you want to be able to choose the time slot that fits you best, you need to book at least a month in advance.

If you want to visit observation decks at Burj Khalifa or Dubai Frame , you also need to book ahead. In most cases, a few days in advance is sufficient, but it really depends on the period when you travel and how flexible you are. Also, consider visiting these attractions early in the morning or late in the evening for smaller crowds and better photo opportunities.

PRO TIP: For Burj Khalifa, we recommend getting a ticket that includes Level 148 . Not only you get to visit another level which is not included with standard tickets, but you also get skip-the-line access through the security check and at the elevators, and it includes some snacks and drinks. It’s well worth it.

Overall, we always recommend booking tickets and tours at least a month before your trip. But keep in mind that for many popular destinations worldwide booking a month or even two upfront is not sufficient anymore.

Tickets don’t get cheaper and there’s less availability the longer you wait. Plus, if you use GetYourG u ide for all attraction tickets and tours like we do, you can take advantage of their very flexible cancelation policy.

Good to know: Booking tickets/tours via websites like GetYourGuide , Viator , or Tiqets also saves you money on exchange rates. The exchange rate they use is the official rate and transactions are in your currency. Whereas if you pay on the spot, it will usually cost you quite a lot more (not only because many tickets are more expensive at the counter, but also because of credit card fees, exchange rate deviations, etc.).

Plus, booking and paying ahead makes it easier to budget for your vacation and keep your credit card’s spending limit available for other expenses during your trip.

3. Foresee Enough Time & Plan Wisely

There is one thing that you may not realize as a first-time visitor to Dubai and that’s how huge the city is. It’s not a place that you can compare to cities like Rome or London , or even New York City where you can still walk between many attractions and see a lot in a short time…

Dubai is totally different! It’s big, not really walkable (except in some areas), and the attractions are spread out all over the enormous and ever-growing city.

Plus, road works and traffic jams turn every ride into an expedition. The same trip that takes 20 minutes at night or early in the morning can take you an hour or even longer during the day. And yes, public transport can be a good option, but it also has its limitations – more about it further below.

Good to know: When planning your sightseeing itinerary, you will see that most Dubai attractions work with timed entry slots. Be sure to foresee plenty of extra time everywhere though! Even with timed entry tickets, you will often be standing in line for an hour or even longer, not to mention the time that it takes to actually visit the place or get from one attraction to the other.

TIP: So while planning what to see and do, foresee enough extra time between the sights and don’t try to do too much in a single day. Also, group the attractions based on their location, and go for a mix of top attractions with some lesser-known ones. That way, you don’t have to rush from one queue to another and your trip will be much more relaxed.

This brings us to the next tip – see below.

4. Don’t Try to See Everything

There is so much to see and do in Dubai that you could easily stay here for a few months and still not experience everything the area has to offer. So resist FOMO and the urge of having to see ‘everything’. It’s simply impossible, especially if you are only traveling to Dubai for just a few days or a week.

TIP: Choose a few places, attractions, and experiences that interest you the most and focus on those rather than ticking off boxes just because some guidebook told you that one or the other place is ‘a must’.

If you absolutely want to go to the top of Burj Khalifa, well – just do it and tick it off your bucket list. After all, how often will you get a chance to visit the world’s tallest building… In that case, book tickets in advance and be prepared to queue, or save time and avoid the crowds with priority access .

On the other hand, maybe you are perfectly content just seeing the building from the outside and rather spend your time visiting other viewing platforms like Sky Views , the View at The Palm , or Dubai Frame …

Or maybe you don’t care about any of these at all and much rather spend a day at a water park , exploring the old town souks (markets), or enjoying the views from a luxury yacht …

Dubai has so much to offer to all types of travelers. So personalize your itinerary based on what you really want to do, taking into account the time that you have, your interests, and your budget. If you are visiting Dubai with the family, try to incorporate some fun activities for the kids in your itinerary as well, even if it means that you’ll have less time for sightseeing.

5. Consider Tours & Private Drivers

If you want to see a lot of Dubai in a short time or you don’t know where to even start deciding where to go, consider booking tours or private guides/drivers .

Sometimes, a private driver can also be cheaper than taking a taxi between all those places, and often, you can also find cars that can take up to 6 passengers (vs 4 in most taxis).

Just to be clear, I am talking about quickly seeing multiple places all over the city in a single day. If you want to spend more time exploring the sites, you better go on your own.

There are tons of different ‘city highlights’ tours that bring you to many of the main landmarks of Dubai in (half) a day. Keep in mind that in most cases, your ‘visit’ will be just a quick photo stop, so it’s not comparable to actually visiting the sights. But it’s a good way to get an introduction to Dubai and catch a glimpse of the top spots.

PRO TIP: If you do a city highlights tour, do it at the beginning of your trip! That way, you can later come back to some of the places that you like the most. An ideal way to explore Dubai is to take an introductory city tour first as you arrive and then thoroughly visiting some of the main landmarks and attractions on your own later.

Abu Dhabi day trip tip: One of the best guided tours we recently did in Dubai was this highly-rated tour. If you want to see the top sights of Abu Dhabi in a day, this tour has by far the best itinerary (I compared many tours before we chose this one and it didn’t disappoint).

6. Save Time & Money with Combination Tickets

Dubai is expensive, there is no arguing about it. But with some smart planning, you can save some money on some of the main attractions.

One of the best ways to do this is by opting for combination tickets and/or city cards that include several popular places.

Here are some of the most popular deals:

  • Burj Khalifa + Dubai Aquarium (+-$20 savings per person).
  • Atlantis Aquaventure + Lost Chambers Aquarium (+-$25-30 savings per person).
  • GoCity Explorer Pass (up to 50% savings, depending on the attractions you visit).

Good to know: Some tickets cost more during the most popular times. For example, Burj Khalifa around sunset. So if you want to save money, be sure to check prices for different time slots/days when making reservations.

7. Stay Longer

You might be wondering how much time you need to see the best of Dubai. Well, there is really no straightforward answer to this and so much depends on your interests.

That being said, I recommend planning at least a week for a first visit to Dubai. But if you have time and your budget allows it, stay longer. You won’t get bored!

With a week in Dubai, you will be able to visit most of the top landmarks, explore several different parts of the city, and also find some time to relax and unwind. If you want to spend more time at the beach or by the pool, visit a water park or a theme park with your kids, or make a day trip to Abu Dhabi, ideally, you plan at least 10-12 days for Dubai.

But don’t worry if your trip is shorter and you can’t extend it. You can have a perfectly enjoyable visit and see a lot even if you only have a day or two in Dubai. Via the link below, you can find plenty of ideas for planning a shorter visit.

8. Choose the Location of Your Hotel Wisely

Deciding where to stay in Dubai might not be as straightforward as you may think, especially if the main purpose of your visit is to explore the city.

There is not one perfect place to stay in Dubai – it’s simply much too big and too spread out for that.

However, some areas are better than others and some are really a disaster for commute. If you pick the wrong location, you might be stuck in traffic for hours every time you want to go anywhere and do some sightseeing. On the other hand, that same spot might be perfect for those who are mainly interested in swimming and dining, and are just looking for a relaxing vacation with maybe one or two excursions that include a pick-up and drop-off at the hotel…

TIP: I strongly recommend that you look at the map and the location of the places that you want to visit before deciding where to stay in Dubai. Also, consider how you will travel around.

For example, staying within walking distance of a metro station might save you a lot of time and money on commuting if you plan to do lots of sightseeing. Whereas staying in a nice walkable area with lots of shops and restaurants will be ideal if you like to go out at night.

Here are two of the very best areas to stay in Dubai:

  • Dubai Downtown (the area around Dubai Mall – Burj Khalifa) is very central and is perfect for those who want to do a lot of sightseeing, but also for shopping and dining. Sofitel Dubai Downtown is a great choice in this area, close to Dubai Mall and just near a metro station. Remember, however, that this is the heart of the city, so very busy and far from the sea.
  • Dubai Marina in the south of the city is another popular area to stay in Dubai. It’s a great choice for those who are looking for a more relaxing vacation, boat trips, water parks, dining, shopping, etc. The beach is not too far from here, however, it will take at least 45-60 minutes to reach the city center. Millennium Place is a very popular hotel not too far from the main Marina area and close to the metro. On a somewhat higher budget, JW Marriott Hotel Marina is a wonderful choice if you want to be in the heart of the Marina.

TIP: On our most recent visit to Dubai, we stayed at Rove La Mer Beach Hotel . It’s close to the downtown area, so quite convenient for sightseeing, but also with direct access to a private beach – the best of both worlds. We loved this hip modern hotel, also because it’s much smaller and more intimate – a kind of place where you don’t have to worry about losing your kids at breakfast. It also offers great price/quality for Dubai. The only downside is that the area around the hotel is still developing with lots of construction going on, but it will only get more attractive in the future.

9. Beware of Tourism Taxes

Hotel stays (including hotel apartments, guesthouses, holiday homes, etc.) in the United Arab Emirates are taxed with various fees, surcharges, and taxes. These amounts might vary depending on the hotel, but it’s not abnormal that these taxes add over 20-25% to your room rate.

For example, our recent hotel invoice in Dubai showed a 10% service charge, 7% municipality fees, 5 % VAT, and an additional 10 AED (+-$3) Tourism Dirham Fee per night.

Altogether, we paid about 24,4% on top of the official room rate. The good thing is that we knew in advance how much we had to pay. Otherwise, this could be a very unpleasant surprise…

So when looking for accommodation in Dubai and comparing prices, make sure that you are actually comparing the same thing!

Many hotel websites show prices without (some/any) taxes, so you may think that booking directly with them is cheaper. Often, it’s not the case at all!

TIP: We always use Booking.com for our accommodation bookings, also in Dubai. With them, you see the total price, including all fees and taxes, so you know exactly how much you will spend. (Depending on booking conditions, you may have to prepay for the stay in advance whereas the taxes are charged separately when you arrive at the hotel, but the total amount you see when making a reservation is correct).

10. Use Public Transport & Local Taxis

Dubai’s public transport system is efficient and inexpensive. Depending on where you are staying and traveling to, it might be very convenient to use the Dubai Metro, Tram, Monorail, or even local buses.

However, this depends on the exact trip you are planning to make and also on the size of your group. Sometimes, public transport is the best way to get around the city quickly and affordably. But there are also many situations when it’s a real hassle and doesn’t make your trip faster or much cheaper.

In those cases, you will be glad to know that taxis are rather affordable in Dubai . The most expensive taxi ride we recently took in Dubai was 25 kilometers, it took over 50 minutes, and it cost us 76 AED (+-$21).

However, be careful that you only use official taxis! Because e.g. Uber is often quite a lot more expensive. Not even to mention that they sometimes charge twice the price during peak times of increased demand. We learned this the hard way, after taking a few overpriced Uber rides…

Also, unlike in many other countries where we use Uber all the time, in Dubai, you never really know how much you will pay until the end of the ride. The price you see in the beginning is usually just an approximate indication.

TIP: Install Careem app on your smartphone and use it to request ‘Hala Taxi’. That’s the best way to get an official taxi in Dubai. If you request ‘Rides’, it works similar as Uber and is more expensive. We learned this from a local taxi driver after a few very unpleasant experiences with Uber and private drivers randomly offering their services at the main tourist spots, and it saved us a fortune.

To give you an idea, we were quoted 120 AED ($33) by Uber and 150 AED ($40) by random ‘kind strangers’ for a ride that in the end cost us 22 AED ($6) by official taxi. When it comes to busy times and popular tourist hotspots, getting a taxi ride in Dubai can feel like navigating the Wild West…

11. Start Your Days Early

One of the best ways to make the most out of your trip to Dubai is to start your days early.

There’s much less traffic in the morning, so you can get everywhere much quicker. But the main advantage is that there are hardly any other people, even at the most popular attractions. In addition – if you are visiting Dubai in the warmest months – getting up early is the best way to avoid the biggest heat.

Good to know: Be sure to check opening times of the places you want to visit. While some attractions don’t open until noon, many others are open from 9-10 AM. There are also places – like e.g. Burj Khalifa – that you can visit at 7 AM, and on some days even earlier if you like…

For example, we recently went to the Aquaventure Water Park at Atlantis around opening time. There were no lines at the entrance and we could also do many popular slides without any wait. A few hours later, people were queuing for 45-60 minutes at the same rides…

In addition, the taxi ride to get there in the morning took us just 22 minutes. That same ride to get back to our hotel in the evening was over 50 minutes, not counting more than 10 minutes for a taxi to arrive… So yes, it really pays to explore Dubai in the morning!

12. Stay Connected

While pretty much all public places and tourist attractions in Dubai offer free Wi-Fi, we highly recommend getting a local SIM card for your visit to UAE. There are so many situations when it’s just much easier to stay connected. For example, if you need to book a taxi ride, or book some tickets on the go, etc.

Depending on your data plan, roaming can cost a fortune in Dubai. My provider sent me an sms saying that using data in UAE will cost me 15 euros per megabyte (ouch! and no, thank you!). So the first thing I did after landing in Dubai was disconnect roaming.

There are several ways to approach this:

  • Pocket Wi-Fi. One of the easiest ways to stay connected on the go is by renting a pocket WiFi at Dubai airport . This is a very convenient option if you don’t want to change anything on your phone. It’s also convenient if you are traveling with a family/friends since you can connect up to 10 devices to it.
  • Local SIM card. Alternatively, you can opt opt for a physical SIM card, which is also available at the airport . With this option, you will need to place this card into your phone. If you want to keep your ‘own’ phone number working as well, see if your phone has a dual SIM option – then you can use both. Otherwise, you may want to bring an old phone to use with this local card.
  • eSIM. There are many providers available (just search online), but what’s included and the prices vary a lot. Depending on which one you choose and also on your device, this can be a very easy and simple process, but it’s also not very straightforward if you have never done it before. Also, not all phones allow eSIM – so be sure to double-check if your smartphone has this capability.

13. Respect Local Culture

While Dubai is a very cosmopolitan city, it’s also a place with different cultural norms and traditions. Overall, UAE is very ‘Western’ and Dubai in particular is very laid back and relaxed. With over 200 nationalities living in Dubai, it’s a true melting pot of different cultures. Still, remember that you are a visitor here, and be respectful.

Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or public places. Also, avoid public displays of affection, as these can be considered disrespectful.

If you’re visiting during Ramadan, be mindful of local customs and traditions. Keep in mind that many traditional restaurants and cafes will be closed during the day but will come to life after sunset. If you are visiting during Ramadan and are planning sightseeing during the day or a day trip to e.g. Abu Dhabi, it’s advisable to pack your own lunch.

One of the most common questions we get is what to wear when traveling to Dubai. Well, you will see people wearing all kinds of clothing – from burkas that cover the entire body to revealing summer clothes that hardly cover much at all. However, while a lot is tolerated, it’s not always appreciated.

So when in doubt, remember that it’s always safer to cover your knees and shoulders. See-through clothing is also not the best idea, unless on a beach.

TIP: Wear loose light clothes – not as much for religious or cultural reasons, but also because of the heat. Long skirts/dresses or wide summer pants will be much more comfortable than tight clothes.

14. Use Credit Cards

The official currency in Dubai is the United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) and all the prices are displayed in this currency. All regular businesses accept cash and electronic means of payment, such as credit cards or smartphone payments.

We haven’t encountered a single place in Dubai that wouldn’t accept a credit card. So if you want to make it easy and simple for yourself, you don’t even need to exchange money and can simply use cards everywhere.

Important! Inform your bank about your visit so that they don’t block your cards for ‘suspicious activity’. And even then… Despite precautions, one of my cards got blocked by a credit card company after a random payment at a restaurant in one of the main malls in Dubai. We had to call the bank to get them to unblock it again and they say that this happens when ‘the systems’ suspect anything suspicious, despite us having notified our bank in advance…

If you want to leave a tip to someone or purchase something small, you may want to have some local currency at hand. In that case, you can get some cash from local ATMs which you will find in malls all over the city. I strongly encourage you to only use ATMs attached to local bank offices as some others might charge additional fees and/or give the worst exchange rates.

PRO TIP: When using ATMs to withdraw money or paying by card, you always get an option between local currency (AED) and your own currency. Always choose local currency (AED) – that way, your bank will do the exchange and you will always get a better rate than the one offered by ATMs or pay terminals.

Good to know: We heard it on quite a few occasions that money is king in Dubai and it doesn’t matter in which currency you want to pay – they will accept it. Indeed, this is the case at the markets (souks) and some smaller private businesses. On a recent trip to Dubai, I could use Euros at the souk. The sellers also told us that they accept credit cards (just make sure to haggle – see below).

Dubai currency - United Arab Emirates Dirham notes and coins

15. Shop Smart

Dubai is a shopper’s paradise, but prices can vary a lot depending on where you shop. The prestigious locations like the Dubai Mall are home to some of the most expensive brands in the world and the prices here are usually very high. You will be able to find much better deals at the Dubai Outlet Mall, for example.

Also, if you go to various local markets (souks), be sure to shop around for better deals. Also, don’t forget to haggle – and not a little! Many sellers take advantage of tourists asking ridiculously high prices. Often, 3-4 times higher than what you should pay, and likely even more… Don’t be shy, offer the price that seems correct to you, and be prepared to walk away.

On a recent trip, I got intrigued by a perfume someone put on me while walking through the Dubai Spice Souk (this is common practice – people will (try to) put all kinds of stuff on you – from scarfs to perfumes etc.). So I asked how much it was. The prices depend on the size and the design of the bottle, they said, and so we settled on a medium-sized simple bottle and they told me it was 280 AED (+- 70 euros).

No way I would pay 70 euros for a tiny bottle of perfume at a market! And so we started the negotiations. In the end, I paid 20 euros in cash which – to me – felt like a correct price. The seller was telling me that this was way too low and he was only willing to do it because it was our last day in Dubai and my kids were cute… 😉

After that, I saw similar perfumes at Dubai Airport souvenir store and indeed, most of them were about 20-25 euros for about the same size I got. So don’t be afraid to negotiate and if you don’t feel comfortable with the price or the quality, simply walk away.

16. Explore Beyond the Glitz

While Dubai is best known for its skyscrapers and extravagant landmarks, don’t miss out on its cultural gems as well.

One of the best places to catch a glimpse of authentic culture is Old Dubai. Visit the historic Al Fahidi neighborhood, explore the spice and gold souks, and take a traditional abra ride along Dubai Creek. These experiences are also quite touristy, but they are also totally different from the main attractions in Dubai.

TIP: There are many excellent guided tours that visit Old Dubai . They all take you to the same area, do the traditional boat ride on Dubai Creek, and visit the same local markets. Most tours also include local coffee and dades, and some also food tasting. While you can just visit the area on your own, these tours are really affordable and give you a somewhat deeper insight and insider tips.

On our recent visit, we chose this walking/food tour . It started with some traditional food tasting at a local restaurant, followed by a visit to the old town, a boat ride, and ended at the gold and spice souks. A nice way to spend a few hours and get to know a different side of the city.

17. Avoid Weekends

If you think Dubai is busy on a weekday, try to imagine it on a weekend or on public holidays.

So if you can adjust your plans, avoid visiting the most popular attractions on weekends (Friday afternoon, Saturday, and Sunday).

If you are in Dubai for more than a few days, this is really not difficult to do. Visit the most popular places such as Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Global Village , Miracle Garden , or theme parks and water parks on weekdays.

On weekends, you can do more relaxing activities such as a sightseeing a yacht trip , a speedboat tour , spend time at the beach or by the pool, go parasailing or jetskiing , or take a desert tour – see below.

Dubai Mall and Aquarium

18. Experience the Desert

No trip to Dubai would be complete without experiencing its desert. Book a desert safari tour for an adrenaline-pumping ride over the dunes, followed by a traditional Bedouin-style dinner under the stars. It’s an unforgettable experience!

There are many desert tour options , but when you look closely, they are very similar in what they offer. Depending on the option you book, you have one main activity – usually, dune bashing in a jeep, quad, or camel ride. Afterward, you spend time in a desert camp where you can partake in all kinds of different experiences.

Some of these experiences include taking pictures with falcons and camels, sandboarding, various shows (traditional dance, belly dance, fire show), henna tattoos, etc. There is always lots of local food and it’s surprisingly good.

Our experience: We have done two desert tours in Dubai (on different trips) and they were both very similar and both excellent. The first time we went on this dune safari tour and on a recent trip, we opted for this highly-rated tour that includes a longer camel ride . In both cases, the second part of the tour was quite similar, the main difference was that the first tour included an exhilarating jeep ride through the dunes, and the second one – a 45-minute camel ride.

The whole family really enjoyed these tours and I couldn’t say which one is better. All I can tell you is that it’s a nice experience that will make your trip to Dubai even more memorable.

19. Don’t Forget Little Important Details

Here are some additional travel tips for Dubai:

  • Bring a reusable water bottle. Dubai is so warm and dry that you will want to carry a bottle of water on you at all times. If you want to minimize plastic waste, you may want to bring your own reusable water bottle. Tap water is, in general, safe to drink. In addition, you will also see free water taps at some public areas, where you can refill your bottles.
  • Pack a travel adapter. UAE uses  Type G  plugs, same as in the UK. However, we noticed that in most hotels you can also simply use European plugs and sometimes a simple USB cable. Still, we always pack a Type G adapter just to be safe.
  • Bring a power bank to charge your phone on the go. Also, carry extra batteries for your camera.
  • Know that you are not obliged to tip, but it’s also appreciated. Many people tip 10-15% at the restaurants or give a small tip to tour guides. If you like to tip, make sure you have some small bills of local currency.
  • Bring a small crossbody bag for sightseeing. At some landmarks, you will be asked to leave bigger bags/backpacks in a locker. I like Hedgren crossbody bags for travel – they are light, sturdy, and very durable. The one I have is big enough to hold my camera, a power bank, documents, and even two water bottles, and I was never asked to use a locker. But pack the smallest backpack and you’ll often have to leave it behind…
  • Don’t forget sun protection. A sun hat, sunscreen lotion, and sunglasses are a must when visiting Dubai!

UAE’s tourism sector to generate 23,600 new jobs in 2024: WTTC

Travel & tourism.

International tourists are projected to spend Dh192 billion in UAE this year

STOCK DUBAI TRAVEL RUSH

Abu Dhabi: The UAE’s travel and tourism sector is poised to add 23,600 new positions this year, bringing the total workforce to nearly 833,000, the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) announced Thursday.

The WTTC, in its UAE 2024 Economic Impact report, said last year that jobs supported by travel and tourism grew by 41,000 to reach more than 809,000, representing one in nine jobs in the country.

“Although the jobs lost during the pandemic were fully recovered in 2022, today’s announcement shows sector jobs have increased 11 per cent since the 2019 high point,” said WTTC’s President and CEO, Julia Simpson.

“In 10 years, there will be about a million jobs in the travel and tourism sector, and it will likely be worth Dh275 billion. These include jobs in the hotel and hospitality sector as well as those in aviation, travel agents, online travel agents, and more,” she explained.

Moreover, WTTC, a global tourism body, forecasts that the sector will continue to grow in 2024, with a GDP of over Dh236 billion.

International visitor spending is projected to grow by nearly 10 percent to reach Dh192 billion, and domestic visitor spending is forecast to increase by 4.3 percent to reach almost Dh58 billion.

Record-breaking year of travel and tourism

WTTC’s report has revealed a record-breaking year for the sector in the UAE, with new records achieved across key metrics, including the sector’s GDP contribution, jobs, and visitor spending.

Simpson said the sector is now soaring past all previous records. Last year, it grew by more than a quarter (26 percent) to contribute a record-breaking Dh 220 billion to the UAE’s GDP, representing 11.7 percent of the entire economy.

She explained, “This exceeded the previous record set in 2019 by almost 15 percent and underscores the sector’s pivotal role in the nation’s economic framework.”

Visitor spending

According to the WTTC, domestic visitor spending fully recovered in 2022; it continued to grow last year to reach more than Dh55.5 billion, almost 40 per cent higher than in 2019.

Moreover, international visitor spending surged by almost 40 per cent in 2023 to reach over Dh175 billion, 12 per cent above 2019 levels.

Simpson said, “The UAE’s travel and tourism sector has not only recovered; it soared to new heights. The remarkable growth in employment and visitor spending is a testament to the UAE’s strategic vision and commitment to enhancing the sector.”

The national rounds up the most interesting tourism news you might have missed.

After the UAE experienced its worst storm to date , some hotels in Dubai have announced discounted rates for residents in need of a place to stay. And in Abu Dhabi, British Airway s has returned with its first flight to Zayed International Airport and its first to the city since the global pandemic.

A new study ranks the most and least expensive passports in the world – and the results may surprise you – while in Amsterdam, more plans are in place to curb overtourism.

Here's a round-up of recent travel and tourism news – in case you missed it.

UAE has the world’s least expensive passport

The UAE passport is one of the world’s strongest and now it has claimed another ranking as the least expensive in the world.

Representing fantastic value for money compared to other destinations, the UAE passport is the least expensive travel document in a new ranking of costs by Australian price comparison website Compare the Market.

At just $17.70 Australian dollars – the UAE passport is valid for five years, meaning travellers only need to pay $3.54 per year. The document is also one of the world’s most powerful passports, with holders able to visit 183 destinations visa-free. This represents the best value for money in the study, as travellers are essentially paying $0.15 per country that they can travel to without a visa.

India has the second least expensive passport in the world at a cost of $18.07, valid for 10 years but with access to only 62 countries. Hungary rounds out the bottom three on the list with passport fees of just $20.75 for a five-year document that gives travellers visa-free access to 188 destinations.

At the other end of the scale, Mexico has the world’s most expensive travel document. Passport holders in the North American country need to pay USD$231.05 for a 10-year passport, working out at $23.11 per year, and with visa-free travel to 162 destinations, 21 less than UAE passport holders have access to.

Despite having powerful passports, nations such as Australia, the US and Canada did not perform well in the study because of high passport fees relative to other countries.

British Airways returns to Abu Dhabi after four-year pause

British Airways is once again flying non-stop from London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi. Photo: British Airways

British Airways has resumed non-stop flights between London and Abu Dhabi after a four-year hiatus. On Sunday, BA landed in the UAE capital with a Boeing 787-9 flight from London Heathrow, touching down at the recently opened Zayed International Airport.

Britain’s national airline will operate daily flights between the two capital cities. Flights are scheduled to land in Abu Dhabi at 8.30am and in London at 3.20pm.

It’s the first time the airline has operated to the UAE capital since the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We extend a warm welcome to British Airways as they start operating at Zayed International Airport with a daily schedule that promises to enrich connectivity and invigorate both business and tourism. Our new award-winning and cutting-edge terminal offers visitors an unparalleled introduction to the vibrant UAE capital, where they will be greeted with Emirati hospitality at its finest,” said Elena Sorlini, managing director and chief executive at Abu Dhabi Airports.

Flights between London and Abu Dhabi will operate with four cabin classes – including premium economy and first class. Return fares start from Dh2,610 and flight times are around seven hours.

Amsterdam puts the brakes on new hotel plans

Amsterdam, Netherlands, is famed for its beautiful canals, thriving food scene and endless parades of bicycles. Getty Images

Famed for its beautiful canals, thriving food scene and endless parades of bicycles, Amsterdam wants to halt the number of tourists visiting each year by putting a ban on new hotels.

The City Council in Amsterdam has voted to prevent any new hotels from being constructed in a bid to combat overtourism. It's all part of a new “Amsterdam in Balance” campaign that aims to prevent problems caused by high quantities of visitors.

Officials want hotel stays to remain fewer than 20 million per year, a number that had already been surpassed in 2019, before the pandemic, when 25.2 million tourists spent at least one night in the Dutch city.

Under the rules, new hotels will only be allowed to open in Amsterdam if another closes. And developers will not be allowed to add additional guest rooms to a hotel's portfolio. Hotels that have already had approval to launch, can proceed with development plans. Officials are also encouraging developers to look for destinations outside the crowded city centre.

Amsterdam has recently tried to reduce tourism by restricting other behaviours, including closing bars and clubs earlier, converting former hotels into residential properties, placing limits on canal cruises and banning some cruise ships.
