Shrewsbury Visitor Information Centre

The Visitor Information Centre (VIC) can be found within Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, right in the centre of Shrewsbury town.  We can help visitors to the town with information on the town, on what there is to see and do, how to get around the county and how to get the most out of a visit to Shrewsbury and the surrounding area.

In Shrewsbury the Visitor Information Centre (VIC) is housed in the same building as Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, on the ground floor, in the museum gift shop.

November – March

Open  Tues – Sat 10am – 4pm Sunday 11am – 4pm

We have a retail shop, stocking Shrewsbury souvenirs, local foods, books by local authors and work by local artists.

We look forward to seeing you and helping you to get the most out of your time in Shropshire.  We are located in The Square, follow the signs for the VIC or Shrewsbury Museum and you will find us in the heart of the town.

Hawskstone Park Follies are offering 50% off general admission from February 9th to 18th, making it the perfect opportunity to uncover the mysteries that await. However, throughout the 20th Century this romantic landscape became forgotten, overgrown and ruinous, unvisited by all but the locals. Now recognised as a Masterpiece of the School of Naturalistic Landscape and designated as a Grade I listed landscape by English Heritage, this magical and exhilarating landscape had a new lease of life with a multi-million pound restoration project enabling it to reopen to visitors in 1993. Overgrown but never fully forgotten, pathways were cleared, gullies reopened and handrails reinstalled to allow visitors to enjoy the spectacular views and surprises that The Follies reveals around every corner. Shropshire Hills

Where to start?

For the uninitiated it can be a case of ‘where to start’? If food is your thing then  Ludlow  won’t disappoint; as Shropshire’s gastronomic capital the gourmet restaurants are supported by the numerous delis, restaurants, cafes and food markets, all serving quality local food and not forgetting the famous  Ludlow Food Festival .

Real ales fans  gravitate towards  Bishops Castle  as the place to be seen and with several micro breweries, including the famous Three Tuns and more pubs than a town this size should really have, it’s easy to see why.

Walkers will find that  Church Stretton  and  Craven Arms  provide a genuine welcome and an equally great springboard into the Shropshire Hills. Then there is  Clun , immortalised by A.E. Housman in his Shropshire Lad and  Cleobury Mortimer  with its amazing twisted spire.

Visit  Much Wenlock  and the museum to learn about the town’s history and sporting heritage, particularly the Olympic Games.

An explore through this website will give you the very best south Shropshire  accommodation ,  hotels ,  self catering cottages ,  B&Bs  and  inns ,  events  and festivals and plenty of entertaining things to do and see.

One thing is for sure about the  Shropshire Hills  – one visit will not be enough to take it all in!

Whitchurch, Shropshire

Visiting Whitchurch

Whitchurch is the northernmost market town in Shropshire sitting on the borders of south Cheshire and Wales. The town is 20 miles from Shrewsbury, Chester and Wrexham and can be reached by ‘A’ roads, train and canal. The Lands End to John O’Groats cycle routes pass through Whitchurch.

Beautiful countryside surrounds Whitchurch inviting everyone to sample the delights of strolling along the canal, cycling through country lanes and enjoying the fresh air. The town itself offers a wealth of independent shops , cafés , bars and restaurants to suit all tastes.

Staying in Whitchurch not only offers comfortable accommodation , fabulous food and a great welcome, but gives easy access to a wide variety of places for day excursions .

I often make my way into Cheshire through the town of Whitchurch, of which I am really quite fond.  It is one of those towns that has everything useful – chemists, banks, hardware stores… and an independent bookshop, and it has without doubt the best Tourist Information Centre that it has ever been my privilege to go to.  Clarissa Dickson Wright ‘Clarissa’s England’

Add the weekly Country Market, monthly Farmers’ Market , a wide range of independent specialist shops, lovely coffee shops, the many traditional pubs and inns which offer good food and beers, the interesting mix of buildings and you have the ideal place to spend a few days relaxing.

For the more energetic Whitchurch, a ‘ Walkers are Welcome ‘ town, is set in beautiful countryside which is ideal for walking. For example, the towpath along the Llangollen Canal will bring you to the Grindley Brook staircase locks and the Canalside Cafe.  Macdonald Hill Valley Spa, Hotel and Golf with its two courses adjoins the town and welcomes visitors.

Within a 20 mile radius there are plenty of historic houses, beautiful gardens and wildlife sites to visit if you wish to extend your stay in Whitchurch.

The first point of call for visitors should be the Community Hub and Tourist Information Point to be found in the Civic Centre , High Street. Those interested in exploring the history of a Shropshire market town should also visit Whitchurch Heritage Centre . This is to be found in St. Mary’s Street which can be accessed from High Street via Bluegates. Follow the line of ‘footsteps’ from the pavement disc in the Bullring to the Centre.

Collect a copy of the Town Trail to lead you around the interesting features of the Town.

Ask for the list of the ‘History on the Spot’ boards which are to be found attached to many of the interesting buildings in the town centre.

See Official Tourism Website for Shropshire  and also North Shropshire – a complete guide to the north of the county .

Your destination guide for Bridgnorth, Much Wenlock and the Severn Valley

This guide covers the Shropshire towns of Bridgnorth, Much Wenlock, Shifnal, Highley, Albrighton and Broseley. Click on the images below to visit each destination:

Bridgnorth Town

Bridgnorth, in reality, is two towns: the High Town (good views down) and the Low Town (good views up). Now connected by the steepest inland funicular railway in Britain. The Low Town was once a thriving port along the banks of the River Severn, while the High Town held the castle, the churches, and many fine 16th and 17th century mansions. Charles I, lost his head here completely, declaring the view to be – “the finest in all my kingdom.”

The more energetic amongst you can amble up one of the seven sets of steps, or the steep old Cartway, where goods were once hauled to the market above. The carts are gone, but the markets remain. Antiques and local produce are particular specialities.

What’s left of the Castle leans at an alarming angle, even greater than the Tower of Pisa. The building was blown up in the Civil War by the Parliamentarians – who botched it, typical of parliamentarians.

Nearby an iron footbridge takes you to the Severn Valley Railway Station. If you want to explore the beautiful Severn Gorge to the south, you should definitely let the steam train take the strain. And you can enjoy wonderful 1940’s and 1960’s steam nostalgia weekends. (Hurry, before they reach the 1970’s).

History (How it Started)

A tourism initiative which developed from a challenge issued to local students, gathered huge interest and a positive reaction. The British Ironwork Centre, challenged Walford and North Shropshire College travel and tourism students to devise plans to address the problems faced by Oswestry in attracting visitors to the town and surrounding areas. One of the main issues highlighted in the students’ reports was the forthcoming reduction in hours of Oswestry’s Mile End Tourist Information Centre, which was to be closed on Wednesdays and Sundays, leaving potential visitors without information regarding the town’s attractions. Following the competition, it was suggested that the British Ironwork Centre worked in partnership with the college to address local tourism issues, and in particular this highlighted gap in service provision.

Callum Roberts & Kenny Anthonisz – Relocation of the Tourist Information Centre from the Mile End Island to the British Ironwork Centre in 2015 . “It’s incredibly positive, each partner benefits positivity.  The college support the initiative and given paid work experience for the tourism students, The County Council benefits from ensuing quality and reliability is maintained, The British Ironworks benefits from additional visitors. This is probably a unique example of how working together, problems can overcome.  I believe this can be used as a role model ongoing for partnerships, it’s incredibly practical and imaginative, everyone benefits, especially our visitors to North Shropshire.” – Clive Knowles – Chairman of The British Ironwork Centre
