15 Tips For Making The Most Of Campus Visits

Spring is prime time for college campus visits, which as you probably already know, we're a huge believer in when it comes to deciding where you'll be the happiest. Got your list of tour dates all set? Here's a list of our 15 best tips for getting the most out of each stop.

1. Snap photos.  Throughout your tour and as you explore on your own, use your phone to take pics. These shots will be invaluable when you're back home and want to recall everything you saw.

2. Collect campus publications.  College newspapers and magazines can give you a great glimpse into the goings-on around campus. As you walk through hallways and lobbies, look for anything that's written by or for students.

3. Pick up a local newspaper.  Ask your tour guide if there's anywhere on campus or somewhere close by where you can grab a town paper, so you can get to know the college's surroundings even better.

4. Bring home business cards.  If you chat with any admissions counselors on your trip, ask for their contact information to make following up easy, should you have any questions. While you're at it, take home any admissions materials they have on hand that you can add to your files.

5.  Chat with professors.  If you have the opportunity to meet with a professor in your field of interest, go for it! Ask them questions like,  What do you love about teaching here?, What types of students thrive in your courses?  and  Can you tell me the biggest strengths of your program or department?

6. Chat with students.  The same goes for current students. Any chance you get, go ahead and ask anything you want to know—about life on the weekends, the food, the location and so on.

7. Check out what's within walking distance.  Find out where students can almost always be found when they’re off the grid. Are there are nearby cafes, shops or parks they love to frequent? Make time to drive or walk around. ( Here are 15 places  you can walk to from Siena.)

8. Notice student pride.  As you roam the campus, take note of all the students wearing college apparel...and simply having a good time. Those kinds of scenes can really paint a picture about the community you'd be joining.

9. Look for construction.  No, really! If you see any construction trucks or workers with hard hats, it could mean the college wants to improve their facilities or is adding new ones—a great sign about the pride they take in their campus.

10. Peek into collaborative centers and institutes.  Not all colleges have designated areas where students and faculty can meet and collaborate. If the one you're visiting has a few, step inside. Are they equipped with innovative meeting rooms and cutting-edge technology? (At Siena, ask us about the Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity  and the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship , two of our many centers.)

11. Personalize your visit.  See if the admissions team is open to customizing your visit based on your year and interests. If you're into basketball, can you check out a practice or meet the coach? If you're undecided about your major, can you meet with a few students who were in the same boat?

12. Sit in on a class.  Preferably in a topic that interests you. But regardless of if it's a class you'd actually enroll in, you'll learn a lot from scoping one out—like how interactive it is, how engaging the professor is, what the size is like and more.

13. Eat in the dining hall.  Blend in with current students and make yourself a plate! The dining hall is one of the best places to imagine yourself living there, and of course, to find out how the food tastes. (At Siena, don't miss the gelato bar in Lonnstrom...)

14. Take notes.  We don't mean about everything! But if something makes you go "oh wow, that's awesome!" or "hmm, I don't love that," it's important enough to jot it down on your phone, so you can easily jog your memory back home.

15. Pick the right kind of visit.  Depending on how far along you are in your college search, you may want to sign up for an Open House or other event for prospective students. Or, you might be better off with a quick campus tour this time around. Here's how you can decide.

Excited to get going? We hope so. This is probably the most fun part of the whole college search process. If you haven't yet been to Siena, schedule a visit  now.

Advice for campus visits: What to ask professors

One of the absolute best things you can do during the whole deciding-where-to-go-to-college process is visit campuses. What you see on a website just doesn't compare to the real thing, and walking around a campus in person may be all you need to make that short list of schools you're interested in. In fact, so many students have told us that their campus tour was when they first realized Siena was right for them.

Ask a professor

The idea of interacting with professors while you're still in high school may be intimidating, but if you're given the opportunity to chat with at least one on your campus visit, whether they teach something you're interested in or not, take it!

Here are a few questions you can ask them to make the most of your conversation and learn more about the college.

√ Why did you choose to teach here?

√ What are your favorite courses to teach?

√ Can you tell me the biggest strengths of your program or department?

√ What are some reasons why students choose to study [insert their field] here?

√ Is there anything you're looking to change about your program in the next few years?

√ What types of students have you seen really thrive in your courses?

√ What resources are available for students who may want a little extra guidance or help with an assignment?

√ What are some things you look forward to during the school year? Maybe some traditions or annual events?

The responses you receive will not only shed light on the faculty you'd be learning from, but you'll also glean more insights into the college, the academics and the kinds of students who do well there. So absolutely take up any Admissions committee's offer to introduce you to its professors —it's well  worth it. Just remember: firm handshake, be confident and enjoy the conversation!

2024-25 men's NCAA basketball transfer portal tracker: updates

siena college campus visit

  • Graduate of University of Delaware. Follow on X

Transfer portal season has become the busiest two months of the college basketball calendar. Entire rosters fall apart and get rebuilt in mere weeks, with some teams needing to go into the portal for 10 or 11 players. Coaching staffs spend two or three years recruiting high school players, and now, they spend two or three weeks -- sometimes less -- recruiting transfers.

There will be upward of 2,000 players in the portal by the time it closes for all players on May 1 . The vast majority will find a new home in a similar timeframe.

It's a lot to digest.

Just like the coaching carousel tracker , we're going to have a constantly updated transfer portal tracker this offseason. Find all of the latest intel and buzz on the available players in the portal. School lists, visit plans, target boards -- all of the movement will be discussed here.

Keep track of ESPN's ranking of the top 100 transfers here .

Veteran Michigan State point guard enters portal

The point guard market added a noteworthy name on Friday when Michigan State senior A.J. Hoggard entered the transfer portal. It wasn't a huge surprise, given that Tom Izzo said earlier this month that Hoggard wouldn't be returning to East Lansing, but the two-time honorable mention All-Big Ten selection will be a sought-after option as a transfer.

Outlook: Michigan State likely doesn't need to go after a replacement point guard in the portal. The Spartans already have Jeremy Fears, assuming he's fully recovered from his December surgery, and top-25 recruit Jase Richardson is also entering the fold. But Hoggard becomes one of the best available point guards in the portal, joining the likes of Kadary Richmond , Pop Isaacs , Deivon Smith , Javon Small and D.J. Wagner .

Seton Hall star makes long-awaited decision to transfer

Since the end of the season, Kadary Richmond was being watched around the country as a potential transfer. It finally happened Thursday. He earned first-team All-Big East honors this past season after averaging 15.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.1 assists.

Outlook: Richmond immediately enters the conversation as the best player in the transfer portal. He's a 6-foot-6 matchup nightmare at the guard position, using his size to consistently finish in the lane over smaller defenders. St. John's has long been considered a potential landing spot for the Brooklyn native.

Miami big man becomes top frontcourt option

Norchad Omier plans to enter the transfer portal, sources told ESPN, immediately becoming arguably the top available player in the portal. The 6-foot-7 forward is a two-time All-ACC selection who averaged 17.0 points and 10.0 rebounds this past season. He's averaged a double-double in each of his four seasons in college.

Outlook: Frontcourt-needy teams will be all over this one. Omier chose Miami over Florida State , Texas Tech and Georgetown back in 2022 but should expect a bigger list now. He will be right at the top of ESPN's next transfer rankings update with Oumar Ballo , Johnell Davis and AJ Storr .

May 1 deadline looms

A year ago, the transfer portal was still humming well past the close of the undergraduate transfer deadline -- highlighted by Cam Spencer leaving Rutgers in June to commit to UConn, and Will McNair spending the summer at Providence before reentering the portal and leaving for Kansas State. Those types of transfers will not exist anymore: The NCAA passed legislation last week saying all transfers need to be in the portal by the close of their sports' transfer window. For college basketball, that's May 1.

The NCAA confirmed to ESPN that the D1 Board of Directors approved this change on Monday and it's indeed effective immediately. — Jeff Borzello (@jeffborzello) April 24, 2024

Outlook: The new rule, which many coaches and players were unaware of when reached by ESPN on Wednesday, could lead to a flood of players entering the portal before next Wednesday. Those who are on track to graduate will have to enter before they actually complete all their classes, while players in the NBA draft could enter the portal just to keep all their options open.

Point guard dominos begin to fall

In the last 36 hours, three of the best point guards on the market announced their commitments. Tyrese Hunter is headed to Memphis , Sean Pedulla committed to Ole Miss and Jordan Pope announced for Texas . The number of available point guards and combo guards is starting to thin out with just a week left for players to portal.

Outlook: Other backcourt players are moving forward with their recruitments. Ole Miss also hosted Oklahoma State transfer Javon Small on a visit and Saint Mary's guard Aidan Mahaney is in the midst of a tour of Creighton , Virginia , UConn and Kentucky . Wisconsin transfer Chucky Hepburn arrived Wednesday night for his official visit to Louisville. Stetson scorer Jalen Blackmon also cut his list Wednesday to Miami , BYU , Northwestern , Cal and Villanova . Utah 's Deivon Smith , who entered the portal last Friday, has become a hot commodity due to the lack of options.

Andrej Stojakovic progressing with recruitment

Things had been quiet surrounding Stanford transfer Andrej Stojakovic , a former McDonald's All American in the 2023 class. But sources told ESPN on Wednesday that Stojakovic isn't likely to let his recruitment drag on much longer. He visited Cal last weekend, and Mark Madsen's program is squarely in the mix. North Carolina , Kentucky and Michigan are all involved, while Creighton , Washington , USC and Louisville are looking to make up ground. He'll take another visit this weekend, but the destination isn't finalized.

Outlook: Madsen has been busy in the portal, already adding five players. Stojakovic would be by far the best of the group, and it would also give him a chance to stay closer to home. North Carolina is the favorite to land Belmont transfer Cade Tyson , which would likely take the Tar Heels out of the mix. Kentucky has become increasingly involved and has plenty of shots to offer. Michigan could use another shooter on the wing.

Top frontcourt transfer schedules visits

Utah State transfer Great Osobor , a top-five overall transfer and the top uncommitted frontcourt player in the portal, has scheduled four visits. He'll take a trip to Kentucky next week, immediately followed by Louisville , Texas Tech and Washington . Osobor averaged 17.7 points and 9.0 rebounds this season, winning Mountain West Player of the Year honors.

Outlook: Osobor would dramatically improve any of the four schools on his visit tour. Kentucky and Louisville have very few players on their respective rosters, and the Wildcats just landed Drexel transfer Amari Williams , Osobor's close friend with whom he shares an agent. Danny Sprinkle, Osobor's coach at Utah State, is now at Washington, while he could be viewed as the missing piece at Texas Tech.

Oakland 's Trey Townsend set to decide

The Horizon League Player of the Year, Oakland forward Trey Townsend is expected to decide this week between Ohio State and Arizona . Townsend averaged 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists this past season, going for 17 points and 12 rebounds in the win over Kentucky and 30 points and 13 rebounds in the overtime loss to NC State.

Outlook: Jake Diebler has restocked his Ohio State roster since taking over for Chris Holtmann, and Townsend would complement Kentucky transfer Aaron Bradshaw in the paint. Arizona is loaded on the perimeter, even with Kylan Boswell transferring to Illinois , but the Wildcats are in need of a physical frontcourt presence next to Motiejus Krivas .

Dusty May and Michigan reel off six commitments in 72 hours

Since taking over for Juwan Howard in Ann Arbor, May has had to rebuild nearly an entire roster. And it was a slow start, but the squad is now coming together. Over the past three days, the Wolverines have landed ESPN 100 prospect Justin Pippen , Yale transfer Danny Wolf , North Texas transfer Rubin Jones , Auburn transfer Tre Donaldson , Ohio State transfer Roddy Gayle Jr . and Alabama transfer Sam Walters .

Outlook: Despite the six additions, Michigan still has only 10 players on the roster -- which means more reinforcements are on the way. At the top of the board is Florida Atlantic transfer Vladislav Goldin , who played for May in Boca Raton and has been considered a Michigan lean since he went into the portal.

Sharpshooter down to five blue bloods

Dayton transfer Koby Brea announced his final list of schools Monday, and it's about as strong as one can get: Kansas , Duke , North Carolina , UConn and Kentucky . The 6-foot-6 guard is one of the premier shooters in college basketball, making 49.8% of his 3-point attempts this past season. He averaged 11.1 points off the bench, winning Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year honors.

Outlook: Where will Brea go? Kansas is getting crowded on the perimeter, especially if the Jayhawks land Alabama transfer Rylan Griffen . North Carolina is bringing in two five-star guards and also could regain the services of All-American guard RJ Davis . Duke could use some shooting pop, but the Blue Devils have Tyrese Proctor , Caleb Foster and a slew of talented freshmen. Is UConn or Kentucky his best landing spot?

Baylor lands top PG Jeremy Roach

It didn't take long for Baylor to emerge as the favorite for Roach, one of the most experienced and winningest point guards in the portal. Roach has started 108 games over four seasons at Duke , earning third-team All-ACC honors as a senior. He hit career-highs across the board this past season, averaging 14.0 points and 3.3 assists while shooting 42.9% from 3.

Outlook: Baylor will have one of the elite perimeter groups in the country next season. Roach will run the show from day one, but Jayden Nunn and Langston Love are back and Scott Drew is bringing in elite recruit V.J. Edgecombe and top-25 prospect Robert Wright III. The Bears are absolutely loaded in the backcourt - and are in good position with Tennessee transfer Jonas Aidoo , a top-10 big man.

Mark Pope gets first transfer at Kentucky

Amari Williams visited Kentucky this weekend and the Drexel transfer ended his recruitment as the trip was ending. Williams was one of the best defensive players in the portal, winning the CAA Defensive Player of the Year award three times and earning first-team All-CAA honors in each of the last two seasons. He averaged 12.2 points and 7.8 rebounds this past season.

Outlook: Kentucky now has three players on its roster, with Williams joining freshmen Travis Perry and Collin Chandler. The Wildcats are firmly in the mix for a long list of transfers - perhaps most notably Utah State big man Great Osobor , who is friends with Williams and shares an agent with him. Saint Mary's guard Aidan Mahaney , Oklahoma State big Brandon Garrison , Stanford wing Andrej Stojakovic and Dayton shooter Koby Brea are among the other players on the target list.

Indiana reels in third big-time transfer recruit

Stanford transfer Kanaan Carlyle announced his commitment to Indiana. The top-50 recruit in the 2023 class averaged 11.5 points as a freshman, including 31 points against Washington State and 28 against Arizona. The Hoosiers emerged pretty quickly as the favorites to land Carlyle.

Outlook: Indiana has the best portal class so far this spring, with Carlyle following Washington State transfer Myles Rice and Arizona transfer Oumar Ballo to Bloomington. Mike Woodson has now reloaded his team, with the three transfers joining three returning starters -- including honorable mention All-Big Ten selection Malik Reneau and former top-10 recruit Mackenzie Mgbako . The Hoosiers badly need to add shooting to the roster, though.

Robbie Avila follows Josh Schertz to Saint Louis

Avila, one of the biggest breakout stars of the 2023-24 season, was always expected to follow his coach from Indiana State to Saint Louis, and he made that official Saturday . Avila was a first-team All-Missouri Valley pick after averaging 17.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists while shooting better than 39% from 3-point range.

Outlook: So far, Avila is the only Indiana State starter to join Schertz in the Atlantic 10. Ryan Conwell committed to Xavier, while Julian Larry and Jayson Kent are committed to Texas. Isaiah Swope is visiting Saint Louis, however.

Michigan lands Yale transfer Danny Wolf

After Dusty May landed his first two players Friday, he got his biggest commitment yet. A 7-foot center, Wolf was a first-team All-Ivy selection who averaged 14.1 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocks while shooting nearly 35% from 3-point range.

Outlook: Michigan was the perceived favorite for Wolf for a few weeks. Now, the question is how this news impacts the recruitment of Florida Atlantic transfer Vladislav Goldin , who was also likely to follow May from Boca Raton to Ann Arbor. But how will it work with two 7-footers on the roster?.

Auburn 's Aden Holloway heads across the state

Alabama head coach Nate Oats got his next point guard. Holloway was a former five-star recruit and McDonald's All-American in the 2023 class but struggled to make shots from the floor, shooting 31.8%. He averaged 7.3 points and 2.7 assists.

Outlook: While Holloway's shooting is a bit of a question mark in a 3-point-heavy system such as Alabama's, he was a terrific floor general in high school. The Tide have now added three perimeter players in the portal, including Houston Mallette (Pepperdine) and Chris Youngblood (South Florida).

Duke begins reloading

After freshmen TJ Power and Sean Stewart entered the portal in back-to-back days, Jon Scheyer badly needed frontcourt reinforcements. Those came Saturday in the form of Syracuse transfer Maliq Brown , who averaged 9.5 points and 7.2 boards on the season -- over his final five games, however, he tallied three double-doubles and put up 11.8 points, 9.6 boards and 3.0 assists.

Outlook: Duke is far from done in the portal when it comes to the frontcourt. The Blue Devils are the perceived favorites for Purdue transfer Mason Gillis , who made nearly 47% of his 3-point attempts this past season, and they're in the mix for Stanford transfer Brandon Angel , a 6-foot-8 forward who shot nearly 45% from behind the arc.

Duke loses seventh player to the portal

Sean Stewart , a former top-20 recruit, announced he's entering the transfer portal Friday. Stewart came out of high school with a reputation as an elite rebounder but failed to carve out a consistent role in Durham. He averaged 2.6 points and 3.2 rebounds in 33 games off the bench.

Outlook: Stewart follows Jeremy Roach , Mark Mitchell , TJ Power , Jaylen Blakes , Christian Reeves and Jaden Schutt , while Kyle Filipowski and Jared McCain left for the NBA and Ryan Young is out of eligibility. Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster are the lone returnees for Jon Scheyer who is, however, bringing in a six-man recruiting class ranked No. 1 in the country.

Top-50 transfer Adou Thiero down to five schools

The 6-foot-8 Kentucky forward has cut his list to five schools, sources told ESPN: Pitt , North Carolina , Arkansas , Indiana and Kentucky. Thiero started 19 games this season for the Wildcats, bringing energy and explosiveness to the frontcourt. He averaged 7.2 points and 5.0 rebounds.

Outlook: The projected first-round pick in ESPN's 2025 mock draft entered the portal before John Calipari left Lexington for Arkansas, so it's interesting to see the Razorbacks make his final list. And Kentucky fans will be pleased to see a potential return to Lexington is still possible. Pitt has quietly had some buzz for a couple weeks due to Thiero being from the Pittsburgh suburbs.

Drexel 's Amari Williams down to three schools, visiting Kentucky

Williams has cut his list to St. John's , Kentucky and Mississippi State , his agent told ESPN. The 6-10 big man is one of the best interior defenders in the portal, winning CAA Defensive Player of the Year three times and earning first-team All-CAA honors this past season. He averaged 12.2 points and 7.8 rebounds.

Outlook: Williams will take his final visit to Kentucky this weekend, and the Wildcats could badly use an experienced post defender to anchor their frontcourt. They've made a strong push in recent days under new coach Mark Pope, but St. John's remains involved, and Williams would be a good fit at Mississippi State given Chris Jans' defensive history.

Chucky Hepburn becomes latest Wisconsin departure

Shortly after AJ Storr committed to Kansas, Wisconsin took another hit: Three-year starter Chucky Hepburn is transferring. Hepburn started 103 games for Greg Gard, averaging 9.2 points and 3.9 assists this past season. He put up 12.2 points and shot 40.5% from 3-point range in 2022-23.

Outlook: Aside from Hepburn's next destination, the story here is Wisconsin losing another key contributor to the portal. In addition to Storr and Hepburn, the Badgers have also lost Connor Essegian , who saw a diminished role this past season after a delayed start due to injury but averaged 11.7 points as a freshman in 2022-23. Gard hasn't landed a player from the portal yet -- and one of the Badgers' top targets, Frankie Fidler , was a high school teammate of Hepburn's.

Kansas lands AJ Storr

Storr, the No. 3 player in ESPN's transfer rankings, committed on Thursday . He was a second-team All-Big Ten selection after averaging 16.8 points and 3.9 rebounds in leading Wisconsin to the conference tournament title game and a 5-seed in the NCAA tournament.

Outlook: Bill Self has added some much-needed playmaking and shot-making -- a major concern for the Jayhawks during the 2023-24 campaign. Storr is the third perimeter addition, following South Dakota State's Zeke Mayo , the Summit League Player of the Year, and Florida's Riley Kugel , a mercurial but talented wing with NBA potential. The Jayhawks are also still in the mix for Alabama transfer Rylan Griffen .

UConn finds its Donovan Clingan replacement

The Huskies clearly needed a big man this cycle in the portal, and they landed Michigan Wolverines transfer Tarris Reed Jr . on Wednesday. Reed visited Storrs this past weekend and ended his recruitment shortly after leaving. He's a former ESPN 100 prospect who averaged 9.0 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks this past season.

Outlook: Dan Hurley essentially needs to rebuild the starting lineup that won the Huskies their second consecutive national title. Tristen Newton and Cam Spencer are out of eligibility, while Stephon Castle and Clingan could be NBA draft lottery picks. UConn is targeting a big man and at least one perimeter player. With Reed now in the fold, Hurley can turn toward guards and wings.

Jeremy Roach announces portal intentions

A big-name point guard just went on the market. Duke senior Jeremy Roach announced Tuesday he plans to enter the transfer portal and the NBA draft, which suddenly makes available one of the best and most experienced point guards in the country.

Outlook: Roach started 108 games over four seasons with the Blue Devils, earning third-team All-ACC honors this past season. He averaged career-highs across the board, putting up 14.0 points, 3.3 assists and shooting 42.9% from 3-point range. This move has been speculated for several weeks, with a long list of schools linked as potential landing spots: Syracuse , Villanova , Georgetown , Arkansas , Baylor , Ole Miss and more.

The No. 1 transfer is off the board: Oumar Ballo commits to Indiana

After initially setting multiple visits, the Arizona transfer didn't even get off Indiana's campus before ending his recruitment and telling ESPN he's committing to the Hoosiers. A two-time first-team All-Pac-12 selection, the No. 1 transfer has been one of the dominant big men in the country under Tommy Lloyd. He averaged 12.9 points and 10.1 rebounds this season.

Outlook: How Mike Woodson uses Malik Reneau and Ballo together will be interesting, given both players prefer to operate around the basket. It's also worth taking a quick look at where the other programs in pursuit of Ballo will turn. North Carolina could look at Danny Wolf and Jonas Aidoo , while Louisville is battling Kentucky for Aly Khalifa . Arkansas just landed Zvonimir Ivisic .

Horizon League POY Trey Townsend sets visits

Townsend, who helped lead Oakland to a first-round NCAA tournament win over Kentucky with 17 points and 12 rebounds, has set the rest of his visit schedule, according to his agent George Langberg of GSL Sports Group. Townsend is currently on campus at Arizona, then will visit Ohio State on Thursday and Friday and finish up with a trip to Louisville this weekend. He also recently visited Michigan.

Outlook: Townsend is one of the most productive mid-major transfers in the portal. He averaged 17.3 points and 8.1 rebounds this season and was able to perform at a high level in big games. The 6-foot-6 power forward went for 28 points against Xavier, 19 points and 10 rebounds against Illinois, 30 points and 13 rebounds against NC State and also had 38 points in the Horizon tournament title game.

The first Lexington-to-Fayetteville move

Kentucky transfer Zvonimir Ivisic announced Monday he's committing to Arkansas , following John Calipari to the Razorbacks. Ivisic is the first player to officially follow Calipari to Fayetteville, but he likely won't be the last.

Outlook: Ivisic, a 7-foot-2 center from Croatia, has an incredibly high ceiling due to his offensive skill set. He can make shots from the perimeter, run the floor and is an adept shot-blocker at the other end. He had 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals in 16 minutes off the bench in his first college game against Georgia, and averaged 5.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 15 games as a freshman.

Texas starters entering portal

After a weekend that saw Rodney Terry land three players from the portal -- Indiana State exports Julian Larry and Jayson Kent , and Arkansas transfer Tramon Mark -- Monday brought the fallout. Tyrese Hunter and Dillon Mitchell , two Texas starters, are planning to enter the transfer portal.

Outlook: Hunter has started 106 games in three college seasons at Texas and Iowa State and had the best offensive season of his career in 2023-24, putting up 11.1 points and 4.1 assists. Mitchell, meanwhile, is a versatile frontcourt player who took major strides as a sophomore, averaging 9.6 points and 7.5 rebounds. The news comes on the heels of top-50 recruit Cam Scott requesting a release from his letter of intent to Texas to reopen his recruitment.

D.J. Wagner enters portal

Wagner, a former top-five recruit, was a household name in the high school ranks who originally chose Kentucky over Louisville after an intense recruiting process between the two schools. But the 6-foot-4 New Jersey native had an uneven freshman season: putting up big numbers during the first half then finishing with single-digit scoring output in 10 of his final 13 games. Averaged 9.9 points and 3.3 assists.

Outlook: It's unclear where Wagner will look to continue his college career. He still has NBA hype, projected as a second-round pick if he opted to enter this year's draft. He could follow former Kentucky coach John Calipari to Arkansas but he's expected to have an open recruitment. Despite his up-and-down freshman campaign, he's one of the most dynamic guards in the portal.

Aaron Bradshaw commits to Ohio State

The former top-10 recruit had a delayed start to his Kentucky career due to a foot injury suffered last spring, but eventually made an impact once on the floor 00 including a double-double against Penn in his second game. Didn't have a consistent role down the stretch of the season though, barely playing in the SEC and NCAA tournaments. Averaged 4.9 points and 3.3 rebounds.

Outlook: Despite the middling numbers, Bradshaw's ceiling makes him an intriguing addition for new head coach Jake Diebler. He can run the floor, he has some skill with the ball in his hands and he can finish around the rim and block shots. What does this mean for the other teams in the mix for Bradshaw? North Carolina was hoping to get him on campus and now the Tar Heels might have to turn to Yale transfer Danny Wolf .

Mike Woodson is wasting no time rebuilding his roster after a down year in Bloomington. The Hoosiers already landed Washington State 's Myles Rice , one of the best point guards in the portal.

Outlook: They're also expected to host Stanford 's Kanaan Carlyle for a visit this week. Carlyle is a former top-50 recruit capable of explosive performances. Neither Rice nor Carlyle is a knockdown shooter, but Indiana is also pursuing Connor Hickman ( Bradley ) and Ryan Conwell ( Indiana State ) to fill that role. Up front, the top target is No. 1 overall transfer Oumar Ballo . The Arizona big man is expected to visit Bloomington this week, and Indiana is thought to be in a pretty good spot. Should Ballo leave his visit without committing, the Hoosiers could turn to Drexel 's Amari Williams , who also visits later in the week. Ballo is the far superior offensive player, but Williams is a three-time CAA Defensive Player of the Year.

Take a look at the numbers behind Michigan's hire of former Florida Atlantic basketball coach Dusty May.

Dusty May has Michigan in the mix for several top targets

May didn't have a completely empty cupboard in Ann Arbor when he took over for Juwan Howard , and George Washington III added to the returnees when he opted to remove his name from the transfer portal and stay at Michigan. But the former Florida Atlantic coach is looking to build a competitive roster in year one, and he's taking some big swings in the portal.

Outlook: At the top of the target list: two of his former FAU players in Johnell Davis -- arguably the top perimeter player in the portal -- and center Vladislav Goldin . Houston was also pursuing Davis, but the Cougars landed Milos Uzan over the weekend; is Kelvin Sampson's program still in play? Michigan is also in the mix for Yale 's Danny Wolf , a first-team All-Ivy selection this past season. While the Wolverines are likely the leader for both Goldin and Wolf as things stand, the first 7-foot center to commit might send the other elsewhere -- or perhaps they battle it out once they get to campus. Oakland 's Trey Townsend , who posted dominant numbers against high-major competition this past season, was set to visit Ann Arbor on Sunday, too. On the perimeter, Michigan is perceived as the leader for Auburn 's transfer Tre Donaldson . Ohio State 's Roddy Gayle Jr . is expected to visit Ann Arbor soon, too. Keep an eye on another Auburn transfer, Aden Holloway . His sister, Mila Holloway, is signed to play basketball at Michigan next season.

North Carolina 's big man pursuit

It's clear that Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels want a true 5-man from the portal this spring. Armando Bacot has used up his eligibility, James Okonkwo barely played and already hit the portal, and Jalen Washington is the lone option remaining for that position.

Outlook: Former top-10 prospect Aaron Bradshaw was expected to visit Ohio State this past weekend, but UNC is heavily in the mix and has him near or at the top of the target list. The Tar Heels are also battling a handful of schools for Oumar Ballo . Will Ballo get through his visits to Indiana, Louisville and Kansas State , though? Rutgers ' Clifford Omoruyi , one of the best defensive players in the country, has had communication with North Carolina, as has the aforementioned Danny Wolf . Could the Tar Heels make a run at Tennessee 's Jonas Aidoo , too? Aidoo, who entered the portal late last week, is a Durham native.

Discussing the United States’ disproportionate death rate from Covid — its percentage of global deaths is higher than its percentage of the global population — Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said at his Long Island rally, “Whatever we’re doing, whatever we did, it was wrong.” Kennedy has been outspoken against Covid vaccinations, whose uptake is closely connected to death rates: Counties with lower vaccination rates have more Covid deaths.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., at a rally on Long Island, suggested that President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump didn’t differ on the issues that he said mattered, including the national debt and chronic disease. He dismissed the wide array of issues on which their policies or proposals differ sharply, including abortion, border security, guns and transgender rights, as “culture war” issues that are “used to divide us.”

Senator Tim Kaine, Democrat of Virginia, said on NBC that it is “a very, very bad idea” to send in the National Guard to restore order on college campuses engulfed in pro-Palestinian protests and encampments. Republicans including Speaker Mike Johnson and Senator Tom Cotton have urged President Biden to send in the National Guard to clear out the protestors. “Calling in the National Guard to college campuses for so many people would recall what happened when it was done during the Vietnam war, and it didn’t end well,” Mr. Kaine said.

In his CBS interview, McConnell also refused to criticize Trump and said his focus was not on the presidential election, but on winning back the Senate. “What I’m doing is trying to change the Senate,” he said. As for Trump, “the voters of my party across the country have made the decision. What kind of influence would I have had? I’m the Republican leader of the Senate, what we do here is try to make law.”

Senator Mitch McConnell, the minority leader, said on NBC that the U.S. needs to “stick with” key allies around the world like Ukraine and Taiwan as authoritarian governments in China and Russia threaten the survival of neighboring democracies. He also vowed to continue pushing for more aid for American allies after having stepped down from his post. “Even after I leave this job, I’m not leaving the Senate, and this is my principal interest: pushing back against Isolationism," McConnell said.

A CNN poll released Sunday found that former President Donald J. Trump leads President Biden nationally, 49 percent to 43 percent, and that a majority of Americans think Trump’s presidency was a success and Biden’s has been a failure.

J.D. Vance told Fox News that he supported the police, but not the National Guard, breaking up pro-Palestinian campus protests. Students “have the right to peacefully protest” but not “to set up tent cities on our public spaces,” he said, adding, “I think the police should be able to handle that job pretty easily.” The protests have spread over the past two weeks as hundreds of students have been arrested.

John Kirby, Biden’s national security spokesman, deferred to local authorities when asked on ABC if local police should be the ones breaking up campus protests. “We certainly respect the right of peaceful protest,” Kirby said. “People should have a right, the ability to air their views and share their perspectives publicly. But it has to be peaceful.”

Gov. Glenn Youngkin, Republican of Virginia, discussed campus protests over Gaza on CNN, saying, “Peacefully demonstrating is at the heart of our First Amendment, and we must protect it. But that does not go to, in fact, intimidating Jewish students and preventing them from attending class and using annihilation speech to express deeply antisemitic views.” He said he wouldn’t allow “encampments and tents.”

Senator Bernie Sanders, Independent of Vermont, tried to carve a middle path by both condemning the antisemitic speech of some pro-Palestinian protesters and denouncing how Israel is conducting the war in Gaza. “Look, I’m Jewish. My father’s family was wiped out by Hitler — Antisemitism is a disgusting and vile form of bigotry,” Mr. Sanders said. “But we have to pay attention to the disastrous, unprecedented humanitarian” crisis “taking place in Gaza right now.”

Kelly O’Donnell, a senior White House correspondent for NBC News, used her remarks at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday to call attention to journalists who have been captured or killed while doing their jobs — including Evan Gershkovich, who has been detained in Russia, Austin Tice, who was kidnapped while reporting in Syria, and reporters who have been killed in Gaza.

Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, said Republicans would not block a deal led by the Biden administration in the Middle East aimed at establishing a path towards a Palestinian state and normalizing diplomatic relationship between Saudi Arabia and Israel. “I’d like to help President Biden get this done because without this deal, everything gets worse,” Mr. Graham said. Secretary Antony J. Blinken will visit Saudi Arabia this week to discuss the possibility of such a deal with its crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman.

Along with their jokes, President Biden and Colin Jost delivered the usual odes to a free press and democracy at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday. Biden all but asked the press to take his side in covering this year’s election. Neither man offered jokes on the thorniest subject gripping the White House: Israel’s war in Gaza, which drew throngs of protesters outside the event.

A new poll shows Trump ahead, and rosy recollections of his presidency.

A new poll released by CNN on Sunday found that former President Donald J. Trump leads President Biden nationally, 49 percent to 43 percent, and that a majority of Americans think Mr. Trump’s presidency was a success and Mr. Biden’s has been a failure.

The poll showed that 55 percent of Americans look back on Mr. Trump’s presidency as successful, compared with only 39 percent who consider Mr. Biden’s presidency successful.

That result reflects changing perceptions of Mr. Trump’s presidency since he left office: In a CNN poll in January 2021, the numbers were exactly the opposite, with 55 percent of Americans viewing his term as a failure. There are indications that many voters’ memories of the Trump administration have faded or shifted since then.

The poll, which shows no improvement for Mr. Biden in the head-to-head matchup since CNN’s previous survey in January, stands in contrast with the overall trend over the past two months. Since Mr. Biden delivered his State of the Union address in early March, a series of polls — including one from The New York Times and the Siena College Research Institute released in mid-April — has shown him narrowing Mr. Trump’s advantage.

With about six months to go before Election Day, many sources of uncertainty remain.

Economic developments, events in Gaza or shifts in Mr. Biden’s policies there, and legal and legislative changes to abortion access could all shape voters’ views before they go to the polls. And looming over everything are the criminal charges against Mr. Trump, with a verdict in at least one case — the hush-money trial in Manhattan, which began this month — expected before November.

Trump and DeSantis meet for the first time since their bruising primary clashes.

Donald J. Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida met on Sunday morning, according to three people briefed on the meeting, the first time they’ve done so since the end of a bruising Republican presidential primary that Mr. Trump won while relentlessly attacking Mr. DeSantis.

The meeting — which took place in Hollywood, Fla., according to one of the people briefed on the meeting — was the result of a weekslong effort by a longtime friend of Mr. Trump, the real-estate investor Steve Witkoff, who also has a relationship with Mr. DeSantis. The three men met alone in a private room at Shell Bay, Mr. Witkoff’s development and golf club, according to the person briefed on the meeting.

Mr. Trump is looking to bolster his fund-raising, an ability Mr. DeSantis demonstrated during the primary by tapping into a network of well-funded donors. And Mr. DeSantis — who has made clear he is interested in running for president again in 2028 — is seeking to shed the negative weight of his disappointing campaign. The meeting was reported earlier by The Washington Post.

A spokesman for Mr. Trump didn’t respond to an email seeking comment. A spokesman for Mr. DeSantis declined to comment.

Mr. DeSantis is not seen as a contender to join a Republican ticket with Mr. Trump, who is both the presumptive Republican nominee and on trial in Manhattan on charges he falsified business records to conceal hush-money payments to a porn star in the 2016 election. Both Mr. Trump and Mr. DeSantis have made clear that such a pairing doesn’t interest either of them, and they also live in the same state, which would make it an unconstitutional pairing unless one of them were to move out of Florida, which is unlikely to happen, especially since Mr. DeSantis is currently the governor.

Mr. DeSantis had been seen as Mr. Trump’s chief intraparty competition, and he was the target the Trump team focused on for months. The tensions between the two men — and their aides — often boiled over during the primary race. Mr. Trump excoriated Mr. DeSantis during the campaign, nicknaming him “Ron DeSanctimonious,” and criticizing him as being disloyal. Mr. DeSantis also claimed that Mr. Trump was unelectable at various points during his primary campaign, which was plagued by missteps and accusations of mismanagement.

Recently, Mr. DeSantis held a donor event the same weekend that Mr. Trump held a large fund-raiser for his campaign. During the fund-raiser, Mr. Trump revived the “DeSanctimonious” nickname, according to an attendee.

Still, allies of both men say it is politically beneficial for them to come together for the 2024 campaign and beyond.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says Americans are ‘voting out of fear.’

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sought to make the case on Sunday that he can do something no third-party or independent candidate has come close to doing in modern U.S. history: win a presidential election. Although polls show him far behind, both major-party campaigns, those of President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump, view Mr. Kennedy as a potential spoiler.

Speaking at a rally on Long Island outside New York City, Mr. Kennedy cited polls that he said his campaign had conducted, showing him winning in two scenarios: one in which he faced only Mr. Biden without Mr. Trump in the race, and one in which he faced Mr. Trump without Mr. Biden.

The reason he is behind in a three-way race, he maintained, is that “so many Americans are voting out of fear.”

“Their only strategy is to try to keep me off the ballot and then to make everybody terrified of Donald Trump,” he said of Democrats, “and on the other side, they do the same thing,” he added of Republicans. “When somebody is telling you to vote out of fear, they are trying to manipulate you into abandoning your values,” he said.

Mr. Kennedy acknowledged to the crowd in Holbrook, N.Y., that Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump differed in numerous ways.

“If you look at their personalities, their dispositions, their presentation, their ideology, their approach to life, their interactions with other people, there’s a huge, huge difference,” he said.

But he argued that issues on which Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump held starkly different positions — like abortion, border security, guns and transgender rights — were “culture war issues” that “are used to divide us all.” He said that on the national debt and chronic disease — issues he called “existential for our country” — their positions weren’t materially different.

In discussing the prevalence of chronic disease, Mr. Kennedy lamented the United States’ disproportionately high death rate from the coronavirus compared with the death rate experienced by other developed countries, a disparity attributable in part to the comparatively low uptake of vaccines that Mr. Kennedy has campaigned against.

He suggested — in contradiction of scientific evidence of the safety and efficacy of Covid vaccines, and data showing higher death rates in states with lower vaccination rates — that the nation’s poor Covid performance was a mark against vaccines.

“Whatever we’re doing, whatever we did, it was wrong,” Mr. Kennedy said, referring to vaccine mandates, lockdowns and other pandemic responses.

Biden lets the Trump jokes fly at annual roast: ‘I’m a grown man running against a 6-year-old.’

Biden pokes fun at trump during annual roast, president biden joked about former president donald j. trump’s age — and his own — among other topics at the white house correspondents’ association dinner. outside the event, outrage over mr. biden’s support for israel in the war in gaza was evident..

“The 2024 election is in full swing. And yes, age is an issue. I’m a grown man running against a 6-year-old. Age is the only thing we have in common. My vice president actually endorses me. [laughter] I had a great stretch since the State of the Union, but Donald has had a few tough days lately. You might call it stormy weather.” “I hope that tonight will be a night to remember, for most of us. And I would like to point out — it’s after 10 p.m., sleepy Joe is still awake. My Weekend Update co-anchor, Michael Che was going to join me here tonight. But in solidarity with President Biden, I decided to lose all my black support. Che told me to say that, and I’m just realizing I was set up.” “Shame, shame, shame on you.” “Shame on you!” “Shame, shame, shame, shame.”

President Biden didn’t waste time.

Just minutes into his speech at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday, Mr. Biden launched into the issues dominating the 2024 election, including his age and former President Donald J. Trump’s hush-money trial in New York.

“The 2024 election’s in full swing and yes, age is an issue,” Mr. Biden said in a roughly 10-minute speech. “I’m a grown man running against a 6-year-old.”

“Donald has had a few tough days lately. You might call it ‘stormy’ weather,” Mr. Biden said, an oblique reference to Stormy Daniels, a porn actress who claims to have had sex with Mr. Trump in 2006 and received a hush-money payment in the days before the 2016 election, a deal at the center of his New York trial.

The comments, even as part of a roast, were notable given Mr. Biden has forbidden his aides to talk publicly about Mr. Trump’s legal troubles. But they also came as Mr. Biden has ramped up his attacks on Mr. Trump, sharpening the split-screen between a president on the campaign trail and a former president spending his days in a courtroom.

The annual dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel provided a break to journalists and government officials from their normal jousting for a night of glitz and gossip in celebration of the free press. Mr. Biden, who has held fewer news conferences than his predecessors, extended his roast to the journalists gathered for the dinner.

“Some of you complained that I don’t take enough of your questions,” Mr. Biden said. “No comment.”

“The New York Times issued a statement blasting me for ‘actively and effectively avoiding independent journalists,’” Mr. Biden said. “Hey, if that’s what it takes to get The New York Times to say I’m active and effective, I’m for it.”

Outside the gates of the Washington Hilton, however, outrage over Mr. Biden’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza was evident.

As journalists and politicians arrived at the hotel, many were swarmed by pro-Palestinian protesters chanting, “Shame on you!” Other protesters wearing press vests with the names of more than 100 Palestinian journalists who have been killed in Gaza lay down in front of the dinner venue.

“By putting our human bodies on the street, we create a little discomfort” for the journalists attending the event, said Hazami Barmada, an organizer of the protest.

Inside the hotel ballroom, many journalists wore pins reading “Free Evan” to raise awareness of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who has been detained in Russia since March 2023 — wrongfully, according to the U.S. government.

Biden Vows to Bring Home Detained U.S. Journalists

President biden took a more somber tone to acknowledge journalists who were wrongfully detained overseas. “we’re not going to give up until we get them home,” he said..

“There are some who call you the enemy of the people. That’s wrong and it’s dangerous. You literally risk your lives doing your job. And some of your colleagues have given their lives, and many have suffered grievous injuries. Other reporters have lost their freedom. Journalism is clearly not a crime, not here, not there, not anywhere in the world. We’re doing everything we can to bring home journalists, fellow journalists, Austin and all Americans, like Paul Whelan. You know, who wrongfully detained all around the world. And I give you my word as a Biden, we’re not going to give up until we get them home. All of them. All of them.” “At The Wall Street Journal, they are counting, for Moscow correspondent Evan Gershkovich, 396 days since he was jailed in Russia. The U.S. government has designated Evan as wrongfully detained. And Evan’s parents and his family are with us tonight. And we are with you, always. We remember Austin Tice, 4,276 days, nearly 12 years since he was kidnapped in Syria. His mother, Deborah, is with us, and Mrs. Tice, we are with you. And Mr. President, again, we humbly ask that you do everything you can to bring them home.

Kelly O’Donnell, a senior White House reporter for NBC News who is also president of the correspondents’ association, used her remarks to call attention to journalists who have been captured or killed while doing their jobs, including Mr. Gershkovich; Austin Tice, who was kidnapped while reporting in Syria; and reporters who have been killed in Gaza.

“Our profession can be perilous,” Ms. O’Donnell said. “Since October, about 100 journalists have been killed, most of those deaths in Gaza.”

Ms. O’Donnell also said the association had wanted to choose both a writer and a comedian when it came to their host this year. Colin Jost, the co-anchor of “Weekend Update” on “Saturday Night Live” — and a former reporter for the Staten Island Advance — spent roughly 23 minutes poking fun at the president.

But Mr. Jost’s speech was relatively light, even supportive of Mr. Biden. He ended it by noting that his grandfather, who recently died, had voted for Mr. Biden in the last election.

“The reason he voted for you is because you’re a decent man,” Mr. Jost said.

Still, Mr. Jost didn’t miss an opportunity to needle the president over his poll numbers.

“My ‘Weekend Update’ co-anchor, Michael Che, was going to join me here tonight — but in solidarity with President Biden I decided to lose all my Black support,” Mr. Jost said, referring to polling that has shown Mr. Biden struggling with Black voters.

Over seared petit filet mignon, celebrities and journalists also had a chance to catch those setting policy that will impact Americans for years to come. Lester Holt, the anchor of NBC News, sat next to Jeffrey D. Zients, the White House chief of staff, who made sure to stand up and speak briefly with the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Not everyone was in a tuxedo or dress — Senator John Fetterman, Democrat of Pennsylvania, showed up wearing a white, hooded sweatshirt emblazoned with a bow-tie design on its front.

Hollywood was well represented at the dinner, with the actress Scarlett Johansson, who is married to Mr. Jost, sitting up front. Popular cable news anchors dined with the actors Jon Hamm and Sean Penn, among others.

Before making their way to their seats, politicians like Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader, and Gov. J.B. Pritzker of Illinois held court with guests as Biden campaign officials talked about recent polls showing Mr. Biden cutting into Mr. Trump’s lead.

Mr. Biden, too, sounded emboldened. While he rarely mentioned Mr. Trump by name early in his presidency, he has aggressively taunted him as of late and kept it going on Saturday.

“Did you hear what Donald said about the major Civil War battle?” Mr. Biden said. “Gettysburg. Wow. Trump’s speech was so embarrassing, the statue of Robert E. Lee surrendered again.”

“Age is the only thing we have in common,” Mr. Biden, 81, said of Mr. Trump, 77. “My vice president actually endorses me,” Mr. Biden said, referring to former Vice President Mike Pence’s decision not to endorse Mr. Trump.

Mr. Biden also used his speech at the dinner to warn about his political opponent’s threats on democracy — increasingly a focus of his message to voters.

“Focus on what’s actually at stake,” Mr. Biden said. “The stakes couldn’t be higher.”

Rhode Island basketball gets a player with Big East roots; who is he?

siena college campus visit

The University of Rhode Island men's basketball team started the week with a commitment.

St. John’s transfer forward Drissa Traore pledged to the Rams after a recent visit to campus. The former Red Storm forward announced his decision on his personal social media pages.

Traore is a 6-foot-8 physical presence who can work in the paint or on the perimeter. He slots into a URI frontcourt rotation that currently includes David Fuchs, David Green and incoming Baltimore wing Tyonne Farrell .

More: Here are the latest RI comings and goings in the college basketball transfer portal

Traore averaged 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds in 28 games off the bench for St. John’s. He finished with seven points and four rebounds in a loss to Michigan and chipped in six points in a blowout win over Fordham. Traore played double-digit minutes in six of his first 11 games but saw his time limited from there in favor of Joel Soriano, Kansas transfer Zuby Ejiofor, Harvard transfer Chris Ledlum and Massachusetts transfer RJ Luis Jr.

Traore and Soriano survived widespread roster turnover entering the 2023-24 season. Rick Pitino swept in with many transfers and divorced from the majority of players recruited by previous coach Mike Anderson. The Red Storm went 20-13 overall, ended up on the wrong side of the NCAA Tournament bubble and declined an offer to play in the NIT.

Traore is a Harlem native who played for a pair of powerhouse programs before his two years at St. John’s. He prepped at nationally ranked Long Island Lutheran and competed on the Nike circuit with PSA Cardinals. Illinois, Bryant, Manhattan, Stony Brook, Siena, Marist and multiple Atlantic 10 rivals — La Salle, Fordham, UMass and Saint Louis — were among those recruiting Traore before he committed to the Red Storm.

Traore is the third transfer commitment for the Rams in this cycle. Sebastian Thomas returns to his home state after a breakout year at Albany and Jamarques Lawrence is in from Nebraska . Traore and Lawrence each retain two years of eligibility while Thomas will finish his college career in 2024-25.

URI also has multiple players from last year’s roster who have found new homes. Jeremy Foumena committed to High Point on Sunday and Brandon Weston pledged to Tennessee State on Monday. They join Tyson Brown (Georgia Southern) and Zek Montgomery (Bradley) among those who will continue elsewhere after a 12-20 finish.

Luis Kortright, Rory Stewart and Connor Dubsky are the Rams scholarship players remaining in the portal. Walk-on guard Jimmy Ball will return after some prodding from Thomas — Ray Allen III and Jameson Smith are still evaluating their respective futures. Kortright is the only member of that group who played a prominent role in 2023-24, averaging 10.0 points and 3.7 assists after moving from Quinnipiac.

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro

siena college campus visit

You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..

The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.

If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..

Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

Belorusskaya

If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.

The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

Mayakovskaya

To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Komsomolskaya

On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice.  For me, this station resembles a presidential palace.  You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!

Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.

You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.

It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say

I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.

I imagine Moscow would have been a little different 13 years ago but these stations have probably always looked beautiful

Food and Footprints

You chose some great stations for this write up! Beautiful details in these stations and would love to visit them sometime. Particularly like the Komsomolskaya station with that yellow ceiling!

Thank you very much. Komsomolskaya seems to be a lot of peoples favourite stations too

Wow! Without the text I would have thought them to be some museum or gallery.

I know exactly what you mean!

Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!

' src=

Wow, that’s a lot of artwork. I wonder how old some of these pieces are?

Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.

My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne

True. It is like having a free trip to an art museum/gallery. I hope that you can one day visit Moscow and see for yourself.

Oh wow, I would never have known that these were metro stations. The ceilings remind me of how you need to look up sometimes, even in the commuter rush!

It is true about life in general, we just go from A to B looking directly in front of us instead of around us

' src=

Wow, I would have never guessed that these were stations. The decor is so pretty and not one I’m used to seeing at metro stations. Love the ceiling at The Komsomolskaya metro station.

They certainly don’t look like metro stations. The ceiling there is one of my favourites too!
