SM Entertainment Announces Upcoming “SMTOWN” Lineup — But Netizens Aren’t Happy

While SM Entertainment ‘s SMTOWN  concerts are normally a hot topic for global fans, a recent lineup announcement of the show in Jakarta has received negative responses.

On July 26 (KST), SM Entertainment’s official Twitter page announced the lineup for their upcoming concert in Jakarta in September.

When the poster was announced, the first thing netizens noticed was the lack of “Iconic” SM artists. While TVXQ! and Super Junior were included, other popular acts like EXO, Girls’ Generation , SHINee, and soloists like BoA and Kangta were not mentioned.

Many also pointed out that by combining all the artists, there were only nine female idols in the show.

In particular, attention was shined on EXO’s omission. While the past few months have not been smooth sailing between SM and the members of EXO CBX , it was seemingly sorted out when disputes were resolved, and the members resigned from the company. It meant that netizens couldn’t hide their shock and anger when the entire group was omitted from the concert.

The phrase “No EXO” was trending on Twitter, with fans sharing their reactions to the surprising announcement.

In particular, one fansite seemingly saw that after the announcement was made, the stocks for SM Entertainment had dropped.

Yet, it wasn’t just the omission of EXO that meant that fans had conflicting views toward the lineup.

When it came to girl group aespa, netizens noticed that the show was in the midst of their upcoming world tour. It would mean that the members would be traveling, and the schedule didn’t allow them time for proper rehearsal or to even cope with the jet lag that would arise.

While it’s not as surprising that Girls’ Generation is not attending, as the members are all signed to different companies and busy with schedules, one person was surprisingly missed out, and it was Taeyeon.

Taeyeon is still signed to SM Entertainment and normally attends these events.

When the poster was shared, combining this with past posts from the idol following the drama with the company and shares, many thought it could be a sign the female idol might not resign from the company.

Even when it came to the members of NCT, netizens shared their concerns. In particular, one fan pointed out that member Jaehyun was missing a huge fashion event in Milan for the event, but he was only probably going to be performing two songs with NCT 127 .

For many fans, SMTOWN is always hotly anticipated. Yet, while SM Entertainment has had a lot of negativity over the past few months, it seems like the company has not done itself any favors with the announcement.

SM Entertainment to hold its first 'SMTOWN LIVE' concert in Korea in 5 years, 'SMTOWN LIVE 2022 : SMCU Express @ Human City Suwon'

SM Entertainment will be holding its first ' SMTOWN LIVE ' concert in Korea in 5 years, ' SMTOWN LIVE 2022 : SMCU Express @ Human City Suwon '!

The long-awaited 'SMCU Express @ Human City Suwon' will take place on August 20 beginning at 6 PM KST at the Suwon World Cup Stadium. Home to the  K League 1 soccer team Suwon Samsung Bluewings , the stadium boasts a capacity of over 44,000.

The event will mark the first ever 'SMTOWN LIVE' concert in Korea since ' SMTOWN LIVE World Tour VI ' held in Seoul in 2017. Domestic fans will be able to attend an in-person show featuring numerous SM Entertainment artists for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Meanwhile, SM Entertainment artists including Kangta , BoA , TVXQ , Super Junior , Girls' Generation , SHINee , Red Velvet , NCT , and aespa will be performing at ' SMTOWN LIVE 2022 : SMCU Express @ Tokyo ' from August 27-29 at the Tokyo Dome.

Will "Zoo" be performed live?? I am so freaking jealous! I wish I could go! In late December, I paid $70 to move my flight earlier so I could get home in time to watch the SM TOWN Live for 2022 on Youtube, and it was so worth it! I wish I could see it in person!

I'm dreaming, but I wish they could come to Madrid or Barcelona.

[Concert Review] SMTown Live World Tour III in Singapore

A 26,000 strong crowd, a floating platform, a stunning view of the Singapore city skyline, and a torrential rain – theses were the backdrop for the Singapore’s stop of the 4 hour-long “SMTown Live World Tour III.” The sell-out concert featured top artistes from SM Entertainment , including  BoA , Kangta , TVXQ ,  Super Junior , Girls’ Generation , SHINee , f(x) and EXO . 

Besides performing their widely popular Korean hits, Kangta, TVXQ’s Chang Min , Super Junior’s Kyu Hyun , Ryeo Wook and Zhou Mi , SHINee’s Onew , Girls’ Generation’s Jessica , f(x)’s Victoria and Krystal , Chen and Baekhyun from rookie boy band EXO, also thrilled the fans with their rendition of popular Mandarin and English hits like “Marry Me Today,” “Just the Way You Are,” “Open Arms,” “Califonia Girls,” and “DJ Got Us Falling in Love Again.” After their rendition of “Just the Way You Are,” fans’ frantic screams did not stop Super Junior’s Kyu Hyun and TVXQ’s Chang Min from giving the lucky fan on-stage a hug. Super Junior also amused the fans when Eun Hyuk greeted in Singlish with “I miss you la,” “I love you la.”

Like their SMTown Live World Tour in other cities, to be closer to their fans, the SM stars whizzed around in buggies with raised platforms, and also performed on the sub-stage closer to fans who are seated further away from the main stage.

A downpour before the concert did not stop fans from attending the highly anticipated concert. When it started pouring again towards the last few songs, both artistes and fans chose to brave the shower, stayed on to perform and support till the end. The sky finally cleared up magically for the concert’s finale song, “Hope.”

The stunning show ended with all the SM stars performing “Hope” amidst spectacular fireworks. The artists remained on-stage and went around to bid final farewells to their faithful followers who braved the rain just to have a closer glimpse of their favorite idols.

Here’s the Line-up for SMTOWN Live Concert in Tokyo in 2024

The concert series will be held on february 21-22,2024.

SM Entertainment has unveiled the stellar lineup for the highly anticipated SMTOWN LIVE 2024: SMCU Palace in Tokyo concert series. 

Taking place at the iconic Tokyo Dome from February 21-22, 2024 this marks the 20th installment of the prestigious SMTOWN LIVE show at this renowned venue.

Building on the success of last year’s SMTOWN LIVE 2022: SMCU Express @Tokyo, which drew a staggering 150,000 attendees over three days, the upcoming concerts on February 21 and 22 are poised to continue this legacy. Notably, this event will mark the return of SMTOWN LIVE to the Tokyo Dome after the sold-out shows last August 2022.

The star-studded roster includes Kangta, TVXQ, Super Junior, Taeyeon and Hyoyeon from Girls’ Generation . Also performing are groups Red Velvet, NCT 127, NCT Dream, WayV, aespa, RIIZE, and NCT NEW TEAM. From the teaser alone, fans are already anticipating unforgettable performances from these diverse and talented roster of artists. 

Beyond individual performances, the audience can anticipate special collaboration stages featuring members from different groups. Although there’s no confirmation yet as to which artists will be collaborating, it still adds  an extra layer of excitement to an already electrifying concert experience. 

As SM Entertainmen t brings its signature concert series to Tokyo once again, fans can expect a celebration of music, unity, and unforgettable moments at the SMTOWN LIVE 2024: SMCU Palace in Tokyo.

SMTOWN in 2023

Unsurprisingly, the SMTOWN LIVE 2024: SMCU Palace in Tokyo will be one of the most anticipated events from SM Entertainment after the agency had a series of shake ups this year. 

As for the lineup, it’s noticeable how EXO is not part of the performers. Although the agency didn’t disclose any reason, fans are attributing it to the possibility of the members’ contract with the label. To recall, Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin had a legal battle with SM Entertainment, while members Sehun and Chanyeol were also rumored to leave the agency. Meanwhile, D.O. has signed with Company SooSoo for his individual activities. 

Aside from EXO, NCT also had a series of changes. In May, SM Entertainment announced the departure of Lucas from NCT and WayV. Meanwhile, former NCT members Sungchan and Shotaro debuted with SM Entertainment’ s newest boy group, RIIZE, instead. Furthermore, NCT has also formed NCT NEW TEAM, the last chapter to their expansion concept. 

Given these changes, fans are looking forward to seeing how SM Entertainment would fare in 2024.

SMTown Live World Tour in Dubai review

Musical collaborations and incredible solo performances saw K-pop artists flawlessly slay the stage with exquisite vocals and tunes

No one does K-pop concerts like SM Entertainment. From the bright visual stage effects, signature K-pop dance routines, dazzling outfits to a star-studded line-up, the SMTown Live World Tour VI in Dubai was an unforgettable night for K-pop fans.

Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumi from Exo’s subunit, Exo-CBX, started off the show with their lively dance track Hey Mama! and Ka-CHING!, two great songs to warm up the crowd for the five-hour concert held at Autism Rocks Arena.

The first hour of the concert featured musical collaborations and incredible solo performances by soloists and group members including Henry, f(x)’s Amber and Luna, Girls’ Generation’s Yoona, Hyoyeon (along with NCT’s Lucas) and Taeyeon, Super Junior’s Yesung and subunit D&E, SHINee’s Taemin, Red Velvet’s Irene and Seulgi and NCT U’s Ten, all of whom flawlessly slayed the stage with their exquisite vocals and tunes.

The crowd was filled with a legion of high-pitched screaming young fans, thrilled at the presence of their favourite idols on stage, holding the artists’ signature colour-coded lightsticks and banners to show their dedication and love to the first-time-in-Dubai K-pop performers.

NCT’s young subunit NCT Dream was the first boy group to step on stage and stole audiences’ hearts with their charm and in-sync performances, while the newly reformed band TraxX, alongside new member DJ/Producer Ginjo, showcased their new EDM music style for the first time with song Notorious — it got everyone hyped up and dancing to the beat.

BoA, the Queen of K-pop, as well as girl groups Red Velvet and f(x) stepped on stage to show some girl power, and they managed to never run out of breath, even when performing some of their catchy, upbeat hits.

Legendary singer Kangta and boy groups TVXQ!, EXO and Super Junior’s solid, polished performances and interaction with fans were some of the highlights of the concert.

Additionally, the ‘Princes of K-pop’ SHINee received loud cheers from fans, performing hits like Replay, Sherlock and View , and proving to be one of the best performers of the night with their highly energetic and synchronised dance moves and perfect live vocals.

Although Arabic lyrics appeared on the big screens, the SM artists sang and danced with so much emotion and energy that it needed no translation.

During talking sessions, the artists connected with the audience, from greeting fans and expressing love for them in Arabic. Super Junior member Donghae surprised fans with a letter he wrote to EXO’s leader Suho stating that if he’d have a chance, he’d come back to Dubai for an EXO concert.

The SM artists concluded the concert by singing together Hope and taking a group picture on stage.
