OVER 600 5-STAR REVIEWS ON TRIPADVISOR

Highlight of our Colorado trip! Our 14yo and 9yo had a blast. The equipment was in very good condition. The guide was excellent at communicating and managing the group, as well as enjoyable and friendly. The route was scenic, not too intimidating even for us novices, but still plenty of fun for the more adventurous. Worth every penny. A great option for non-skiers or to take a break from the ski resort.

The coolest experience of our LIVES. Went with a few friends of mine and couldn't have had a better time - I was a little nervous to do the unguided tour but immediately felt so safe after the guide taught us how to operate the vehicle. I'd do this excursion again in a heartbeat!

While most of my family had never been on snowmobiles, we chose the self-guided 2-hour tour and weren't disappointed! The staff are all characters and Spoon gave us great advice on where to go and we loved having the freedom to explore the mountains and trails on our own. The snowmobiles were modern and the handlebar heaters were almost too hot on a cold December morning! Great experience that we won't forget and will definitely visit again!

The snowmobile tour was an experience of a lifetime. At first I was so nervous about a 3 hour tour but by the time we were finishing up I didn't want it to end. We had the best tour guide and even though it was extremely windy and snowy, that made the ride all that much better. We would highly recommend doing the afternoon ride because riding at dusk and then with the snow made it all that much more magical. We will be doing this tour again!

We had an amazing time snowmobiling for the first time with our 11 and 5 year old! Check in was easy, staff was VERY patient as we took some time to get our cold weather gear on. Safety was explained well and all our questions were answered. I recommend the self-guided tour to be able to go at your pace and choose where you want to go on the map. The scenery and the ride were just incredible...an unforgettable experience! Thanks Nova Guides!

Awesome experience! Friends & I traveled from La to Co. No snow in the city so it was quite the treat. We spent 2 hrs on the snowmobile but highly recommend spending the extra hundred for the extra hour. Staff was very helpful & Jacob our tour guide was very informative. Camp hale has some neat history, go check it out!

My wife and I went on a jeep tour yesterday. The scenery was incredible, and the ride was a real experience. Best part of the tour was our guide, Dimitri. Incredibly knowledgeable, super-personable, and a wealth of experience that us city folk could hardly imagine! All-around great tour- would definitely do it again. Thank you, Dimitri!

Heard about Nova Guides from a family we met while zip lining in Wolcott. Did the ATV tour - Adam was our driver / guide / host for the day & he was fantastic!!! We opted to have Nova pick us up & drop us off in Avon. The tour was so much fun & the views were fantastic!! Plus Adam was a wonderful wild life scout and pointed out both a marmot & a pica. Highly recommend. We shared an ATV but would absolutely each rent our own next time. Hoping we make it back to do snowmobiling!

A mile and a half north of Camp Hale — the sprawling flats along Highway 24 where the 10th Mountain Division trained in the ‘40s—sits a 90-acre ranch abutting the national forest. This ranch serves as the headquarters of Nova Guides, the only permitted snowmobile outfitter on Vail Pass, and provides a direct route onto the less-visited backside of the pass.

Nova snowmobiling 8photo zach mahone f8zrl3

Nova marketing director KT Bell.

Nova runs a handful of different trips from the ranch, but its most popular excursion is the twice-daily Top of the Rockies tour . The route passes through Camp Hale, where you’ll learn about the rec hall and dining quarters that served 14,000 troops. Resolution Road then takes you up toward Machine Gun Ridge, a common 10th Mountain ski zone that might have the best view on Vail Pass. Four different mountain ranges—the Sawatch, Tenmile, Gore, and Mosquitoes—fill the panorama from 12,500 feet.

A guide can take up to eight guests, so ride times can vary, but in general you can expect to ride 30 to 50 miles in three to four hours, says Nova marketing director KT Bell. Full-day trips transit 40 to 60 miles and encompass five to six hours of riding. Many of Nova’s trips are tailored to beginners, Bell says, and primarily provide “an opportunity to get into the backcountry in a way a lot of them never have before.” Nova rents two-person snowmobiles as well as high-performance machines designed for riding in powder. Kids’ outings take place at Tigiwon Road near Minturn.

The Top of the Rockies half-day tour costs $270 (full-day tours cost $375) including lunch at the ranch, with a complimentary pickup anywhere in the Vail Valley at 8:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. Self-guided tours cost $150 for two hours or $220 for four hours (add an extra $30 for the high-performance snow machines). Want to experience the backcountry without the behind-the-handlebars adrenaline rush? Nova also offers snowcat sightseeing trips ($145 per person). All tours are weather and snow dependent; 719-486-2656, novaguides.com

The 10 Best Snowmobile Tours in Colorado

Enjoy spectacular alpine views and a thrilling ride on these top-rated excursions.

The Best Colorado Snowmobile Tours

Getty Images

The same weather and terrain that make the Centennial State a skiing destination also make it a popular place for another winter activity: snowmobiling. With the help of traveler input and expert opinion, U.S. News identified the following Colorado snowmobile tours – all of which have knowledgeable and skilled guides – as the best available.

Like Colorado ski resort season, snowmobiling season typically runs from November to April, but specific tour companies' schedules may differ. Be aware that age restrictions for snowmobile operators and passengers vary among tour companies. And be sure to dress for the cold as most companies do not provide boots, scarves, neck gaiters, goggles or other gear beyond helmets.

Vail: Sage Outdoor Adventures – Adventure Snowmobile Tour

Price: Adults from $239; kids from $119 Duration: 2 hours

This excursion on a private course boasts views of several mountain ranges, the Continental Divide and peaks standing 14,000 feet. During the 100-mile ride, participants will climb 2,400 feet to admire the ski areas and alpine ridges below. Snowmobilers rave about both the stunning views and the adept guides. Outings occur daily from mid-November to early April at set times between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Prices include the use of a helmet. Other winter weather gear is available for purchase (and a limited number of snowsuits and boots are available for rental). Kids must be at least 5 years old to participate; drivers must be at least 14 years old.

In addition to private tours, Sage Outdoor Adventures also offers a Performance Snowmobile Tour, which travels a longer distance and costs more. Sage Outdoor Adventures encourages tour-takers to use their own transportation to reach their base lodge in Wolcott (about 30 miles west of Vail), but can provide pickup service in Avon, Beaver Creek or Vail at an additional charge. Note: Anyone younger than 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

They're often described as the most photographed mountains in North America. Along with the views, you'll also enjoy historical commentary from your guide about the Maroon Creek Valley. Tour-takers consistently describe guides as helpful, informative and friendly. The remarkable views also garner high marks.

From November through April, tours are offered Tuesday through Saturday starting at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Fees include use of a snowmobile and helmet. Drivers must be at least 18 years old with a driver's license; passengers must be at least 4 years old. Longer tours including lunch (featuring hamburgers made with beef from cattle raised on the T-Lazy-7 Ranch in Aspen) are also available.

Winter Park: Grand Adventures – Continental Divide Adventure

Price: From $275 (single rider) or $335 (tandem) Duration: 2 hours

As its name indicates, this tour takes snowmobilers to the Continental Divide. Its trails, which wind through forests and open meadows, approach an elevation of 12,000 feet and provide views of the Fraser Valley and Winter Park Resort.

Trips run Thursday through Sunday from November to April. There are numerous start times, with the earliest at 8:15 a.m. and the latest at 2:30 p.m. Travelers regularly call this expedition great fun and gush about both the unrivaled mountain scenery and the attentive, personable tour guides.

In addition to this excursion, Grand Adventures offers one- and three-hour snowmobile tours. On all guided tours, drivers must be at least 15 years old with a valid driver’s license or permit; those younger than 18 cannot drive with passengers and must have a legal guardian present.
