St. Lucia aka Jean-Philip Grobler is an electro-pop singer/songwriter born in South Africa, and based in Brooklyn, New York, U.S.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Grobler’s first taste of music came when he performed and travelled internationally with the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir. Since leaving the choir Grobler attending music school in Liverpool, England before settling in New York, U.S.

St. Lucia’s initial attempts at making music were strongly influenced by the likes of Boyz II Men, Michael Jackson and Phil Collins, however experimented with alternative and rock music in his later years wanting to create something big and bombastic, but has since returned to his eighties pop roots, with a combination electronic and acoustic instruments.

In 2012 St. Lucia signed to the label Neon Gold Records home to such artists as Gotye and Ellie Goulding and often credited with the discovery of Vampire Weekend and Lana Del Ray. Once signed Neon Gold re-released St. Lucia’s self-titled EP, which he previously had released independently. The EP had unintentional themes of loss that Grobler only realised after its completion, the eventual six-track EP was narrowed down from about 50 songs.

Grobler’s first full-length LP entitled “When the Night” was released in October 2013 and St. Lucia described as “an artist who has sharpened his knives, payed homage to his genre’s past, and created songs that are uniquely and rapturously his own”. Where his previous attempts lacked cohesion, the full-length, guides the listener through an exotic mix of unabashed indie-pop and synth-pop to a cohesive whole.

St. Lucia’s live performances have included a number of fellow musicians from Nick Brown, Patricia Beranek Ross Clark, and support slots for Two Door Cinema Club. Grobler has also shown a rather apt hand at remixing, for the likes of Foster The People, Charli XCS and fellow label-mates Passion Pit.

Live reviews

This was a fantastic show. I was so amazed at the live performance; this kind of music, ie: lots of synths, vocals, complex textures, etc (in my opinion) is really really hard to recreate live, and it was even BETTER IN PERSON. I love it when artists surprise me, and St. Lucia did just that. Not only did the music sound amazing, but it was a SHOW. Clearly a group of talented musicians who not only love to play, but love to play together and to and audience.

Jean-Philip Grobler went into the audience and weaved around while singing on a wireless mic, connecting with the audience in an already intimate venue. Oh and the percussionists were pretty much the best thing ever.

Definitely made my list of artists that I must see if they are playing in or around the Baltimore/DC area.

St. Lucia front man Jean-Philip brings so much energy to his sets, you're going to have a hard time resisting all urges to jump up and boogie down to his sweet, vocals accompanied by a live band whose talent is on par with their leader. Sweet pop-synth sounds, voices that sound better than their recorded albums, and dancing all night long.. you can't ask for much more than that.

I've seen them a few times and each time their presence has grown larger and larger! Most recently, an intimate pre-album release party where they blew the roof off of the venue and treated the audience to some amazing new songs.

It's obvious that they put a ton of care and heart into their music so you will truly get what you came for. Do yourself a favor and go see them!

St. Lucia and The Knocks make an unbelievable duo! The two bands are incredible apart, but when they perform together (like when they played "Modern Hearts") the room comes alive. Their combined energy was palpable in the concert hall, and rather contagious. I couldn't stop dancing the entire night. It also seemed like St. Lucia has a strong internal dynamic. All of the group members seemed visibly excited to be there performing together, and their music conveyed that too. If St. Lucia comes to your town, make sure you buy tickets! This is a band that should not be missed!

Absolutely and without a doubt their best show yet. Full of energy, love, and flare. My BF and I got VIP tickets and it was basically the best show we could have ever imagined. Small and lovely venue (August Hall), awesome opener, and some 1:1 time with Patti and the guys! Literally THE BEST. Even after Jean blew out his ankle from going to hard on the dance moves he still insisted to finish "Physical," like a champ. THEY> ARE> SIMPLY> THE> BEST> Was also happy to discover opener, The Night Game, and snag St. Lucia's new vinyl for my collection. <3

This concert was terrific. They paired tremendously with Vacationer - I honestly would've love to hear more of them, but not at the expense of St. Lucia, of course. Metro is a small and intimate concert venue and puts one some fantastic shows. St. Lucia was so good they sold out their first show and Metro put on another night just for them! Both sold out. That should be an indicator. I loved seeing them... I've been lucky to get in on up-coming bands and see them rocket into the mainstream. I fully expect St. Lucia to be on Letterman soon.

Damn. DAAAMNNNNN. I discovered this band two years ago in a coffee shop and would never have guessed that I would later by front row of one of their concerts and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. I love when artists sound just as good live, but St. Lucia sounded BETTER. Such an amazing, energetic, exciting show. I wish I could see them again tonight!

Saw them at Lollapalooza 2013 and they were great. Then I saw them at an awesome (perhaps the best) venue in Seattle and they were incredible. They don't do anything super crazy on stage, their songs are fairly simple, but they execute everything perfectly. I am not a huge fan of their new album, but live they are really solid. And Fun!

Awesome concert full of energy. Even if the repertoire is a bit limited. The energy started flowing from the moment they took the stage and did not let go until the last song. The whole thing make you feel like you are part of a small audience and that they are very dedicated to you having a fun time. Totally loved it!

So disappointed! Where was the rest of your band? Left after the 4th song. Way too LOUD for such a small venue. Seriously - Man Eater? You are/were so much better than that. Didn't hear any of the awesome songs that Sirius radio promotes for you. So sad to have wasted the money on tickets.

100% fidelity from their recorded tracks to them live. Great performers, great visualizations, and at the new Pier 17 in Seaport NYC, GREAT venue. Will continue to see St Lucia every time they’re performing within a 150 mile radius - they are so so great.

Patti Beranek and Jean-Philip Grobler of St. Lucia

A fake tattoo that won’t wash off — now there’s a good excuse. Such was the case offered by Jean-Philip Grobler and Patti Beranek of Brooklyn-based synthpop band St. Lucia, the morning ahead of their WWD shoot. Two weeks later they’ve just returned from playing a series of shows at Midwestern colleges, and are good and ready (read: free of any temporary ink), sitting in their Williamsburg apartment.

Grobler and Beranek, who have been together for nearly 14 years and married in 2012, got their start, of sorts, at the music production house The Lodge, where Grobler was a jingle writer. “There are two campaigns that I’m actually pretty proud of, one for Chase, and one for Sealy mattresses,” Grobler says. “It was fun but it definitely got really intense. And you can never quite make it the way you want to make it, because even if you throw your heart and soul into something, it’s for a commercial.”

Wwd's new book celebrates black creatives' impact on culture and style in 'black in fashion' , amour vert is entering the southern california retail market and moving its headquarters to los angeles.

Though certainly less artistically driven, the jingle experience helped the two of them learn production skills. “I feel like we saw that as a stepping stone in a way — but it was an awesome stepping stone,” Grobler says. “Definitely,” Beranek nods, looking at Grobler. “Think about how much you learned as a producer and writer from that.”

It’s also the first time the pair cowrote music. “Before, we’d write something together and we’d sing together and it’d be all romantic and whatever, but the idea was always not to work together,” Beranek says. “I’d always sung on his records but never wanted to be in the band because again, you’re not meant to be together and work together, it’s, like, bad for you, you know?”

The whole working together thing has turned out not to be so bad after all. “We’ve been together for so long,” Grobler says, “and we went through, like, ‘no you can’t work together’ to being like ‘oh cool, this is what we want, let’s get the people on board who will help us do this.’”

Grobler and Beranek met in Liverpool, England, where they both moved for school. “Patti was the first girl I met when I moved to Liverpool,” says Grobler, who is from Johannesburg. Beranek grew up in Constance, Germany, along the Swiss border. “It’s a sweet nice lovely town with the lake and mountains,” she says. “It’s like the most idyllic place you could imagine growing up,” Grobler adds.

“Idyllic” was much of the inspiration for the name of the band, meant to match the mood of their sound. “Basically yeah, I took a map of South Africa out and I took a pen and closed my eyes and put the pen down a few different places, and there were some horrendous names, but then the fifth try was St. Lucia,” Grobler says. “St. Lucia in South Africa is this exotic place where you might go on vacation and it evokes this nostalgic hazy vibe. And the music I was working on at the time for our first album very much had that sense.”

Their sophomore effort, “Matter” was released in January, and they’re spending the better part of the year in tour promotion; this summer sees them on the festival circuit in Europe and the U.S., which seems as hectic as it sounds, but something they approach in stride. “So much can go wrong but it’s really worth it when you see the crowds jumping away to your stuff,” Beranek says of playing the large-scale festivals. Grobler adds that festivals have “less pressure in a way. The vibe is different from when it’s like ‘this is our show.’”

And while many artists might get frustrated by sharing that spotlight with so many other artists, St. Lucia, expectedly, have a much more chilled out attitude to it all. “At a festival,” Grobler says, “some people are just there because they’re waiting for, like, Calvin Harris to come on later.”

St. Lucia Announces New LP ‘Utopia’ And Shares “Touch” Single/Video || North American Tour Begins Oct. 7th

July 15, 2022 BY Jason Currell

Led by husband-and-wife duo South Africa-born,  Jean-Philip Grobler  and Germany-born  Patti Beranek , synth-pop aficionados  St. Lucia  arrives with their new single  “Touch”  alongside its 80s film-esque music video directed by  Nicole Lipp . Now, four years after releasing 2018’s LP  Hyperion ,  the band returns with their long-awaited fourth studio album.  Utopia  will be released on  October 7th  via  Nettwerk .

St. Lucia have also shared additional dates and details for their ‘Utopia Tour 2022’ this fall. The Dutch musician and YouTube star Blanks and synth-rocker Caroline Kingsbury will support on select dates. Additionally, having sold out their first show at Brooklyn Steel on November 15th, the band has announced a second show on November 16th, on-sale to the public this Wednesday 7/20 at 10am EST. Renowned for their energetic live shows, this six-week tour is St. Lucia’s first full headline run in four years. See below for the full set of dates, more info and tickets at  stlucianewyork.com/live .

Utopia’s  lead single “Touch”glides out of the gate on buoyant keys and a head-nodding bass line as the refrain reaches for ecstatic yacht rock. As if sticking his head out of the window of a DeLorean, Jean-Philip croons in a glorious high register,  “Oh, I need your touch . ”  The track is complemented with mirthful, 80s pop culture-ingrained visuals featuring LGBTQ+ dancer/actor  Liv Mai  along with  Canyon Carballosa , an inspiring advocate for both the LGBTQ+ and autistic communities.

“To me, ‘Touch’ feels like all my favorite yacht rock tracks distilled to their essence and sent through the St. Lucia filter,”  says Jean-Philip Grobler.  “I’ve always felt that a song like this would suit us because we’re so associated with sunshine, it just took a few years to arrive. Thematically, the song is about how even when you’ve broken up with someone you were in a relationship with, you can still desire them, which is a strange but very human predicament to be in. It also speaks to our deep need for human contact after we were so deprived of it for the last few years. So go ahead, tell someone you need their touch.”

WATCH + SHARE “Touch”

On the music video, Jean-Philip Grobler shares this:  “The video for ‘Touch’ was directed by Nicole Lipp, who is our video collaborator for the second half of our new LP ‘Utopia.’ It centers around a main character (Liv Mai) who gets back after a long night with their ex, who they seem to have re-connected with after a love hiatus due to some wrongdoing on the part of their ex. As we see, the ex (now seemingly having transcended the ‘ex’ moniker) has written a note of apology and as the video progresses the reason for the joy of our main character becomes clear: they both experienced a night of pure unadulterated dancing abandonment with pulsating and moving lights (human or machine operated? We may never know). And thus, our main characters need for the ‘touch’ of their ex is satisfied. But was it a fleeting moment or will it last? Only time will tell.”

Equal parts colorful disco, 70s funk, and 80s pop, the  Utopia  LP is a luminous palette of synths, pulsating with vibrant sonics that has come to characterize their genre-defying career. Inspired by everyone from David Bowie, The Weeknd, Daft Punk, and Parcels, St. Lucia enlisted the mixing talents of trusted collaborator  Chris Zane  [Passion Pit, The Walkmen] to help steer the sonically sparkling ship to greater heights.

On the group’s forthcoming LP, Jean-Philip expresses,  “We at St. Lucia HQ are beyond excited (giddy, in fact) to reveal the next stage of our new musical era: ‘Utopia,’ the full album. Yes, yes, it’s true that we have been stringing you along a little bit, but in our opinion there’s nothing wrong with a little tease, and it might in fact lead to a more satisfying conclusion. ‘Utopia I’ makes up the first half on the album, like a side A, and our upcoming new release, ‘Utopia II,’ makes up the second half of the album, like a side B (remember from the heady days of vinyl?). The journey continues our search for the meaning of ‘Utopia’ through all the joy, sadness, and irony of our modern existence. Is ‘Utopia’ in the extremes, or is it in the tug-of-war between the extremes? Join us over the next few months for more clarity. ”

About St. Lucia:

Led by South Africa-born Jean-Philip Grobler and Germany-born Patti Beranek, St. Lucia has stayed faithful to what they’re best at: putting on incredible live shows everywhere from Coachella to Kansas City, producing shimmery synth-driven pop grooves, and having a good time doing what they love. St. Lucia has always stirred good vibes. It started with their debut album,  When The Night ,  which entered the Billboard Top 200 and hit #6 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album chart. The follow-up album,  Matter , yielded the hit  “Dancing On Glass,”  while the band collaborated with Jack Antonoff, RAC and others. Two years later,  Hyperion  represented a creative and critical high watermark with praise from  Billboard , who hailed the album as “ buoyant ,” and  PopMatters  who raved, “ it feels revelatory .”

Throughout 2020, they wrote and recorded what would become  Utopia  in Patti’s hometown of Konstanz, Germany and Upstate New York. Following the birth of their youngest son Charlie, Jean-Philip’s self-imposed social media exile, and a return to  “normalcy”  in the world at large, they shared six tracks as   Utopia I   in April 2022.  “Rocket On My Feet”  eclipsed 1 million total streams as the project earned critical praise from  Riff Magazine ,  Under The Radar , and more.  Variance  hailed it as  “a wealth of electropop goodness in the middle of a world on fire . ”

In its entirety, the forthcoming LP only expands this vision, hinging on the parity at the heart of the band’s signature style. Synths pulsate like strobe lights as euphoria rains down from a skyscraping singalong. The guitar strings shake and shudder akin to bodies on the dance floor bathed in fluorescence. Freedom courses through every physical and emotional movement as you depart this dimension only to land on St. Lucia’s  Utopia . The group’s fourth full-length album unlocks this plane via eloquent and elegant electro-pop projected in cinematic proportions like your favorite fantasy fever dream on the big screen. As the unadulterated and unfiltered vision of Jean-Philip Grobler and Patti Beranek, these 13 tracks engage escape in its purest form.

St. Lucia on creating a retro paradise with new album ‘Utopia’: “Follow the love, don’t follow the fear”

On their fourth album released last Friday, the synth pop duo dance through tides of global and personal change. Jean-Philip Grobler and Patti Beranek speak to NME about moving to Germany, the pandemic and more

St. Lucia

In partnership with Nettwerk

Last week (October 7), Germany-based synth pop duo St. Lucia released their fourth full-length record, ‘Utopia’. The 13-track project concludes a four-year gap between albums – the longest for the band – which was marked by major changes in both their personal lives and the world around them.

Owing much to the music of the ’70s, the album dishes out colourful jams which run the gamut from the rollicking, Footloose -ready pulse of ‘Separate World’, to the euphoric disco stomp of lead single ‘Rocket On My Feet’ and emotive yacht rock of ‘Hey Now’.

‘Utopia’ arrives just as St. Lucia commence a headlining North American tour, which will keep the duo busy until its conclusion in November, when they return to play the iconic Brooklyn Steel in the city they once called home. Dialling in from Philadelphia, Jean-Philip Grobler and Patti Beranek chat with NME about the new album, the pandemic and the nostalgic sounds that inspired them.

I want to start at the very beginning. You moved from your beloved home base of New York to Konstanz, Germany in early 2021. Was it difficult for you to leave the city?

Patti Beranek: “Yes and no. Jean and I had been talking about moving. We love New York, but you know, after a while, we had a kid.”

Recommended

Jean-Philip Grobler: “We had been there for 14 years, basically.”

Beranek: “Yeah, and you don’t do the same things in New York with a kid that you did before, you know? On top of that, all of our friends moved to LA; I think the industry kind of moved there and [so] everybody moved there. And so, we’d been talking about not staying in New York, but we couldn’t quite leave because we do love it. And then the pandemic hit, and I was like, ‘Will we ever tour again or make any money?’ [At the same time], I had another kid on the way. So we moved to my hometown basically, to be closer to family [and] have a support system. It was a very quick decision because of the pandemic and how it happened. So for me, being pregnant, it felt like I had to pack up my life for 14 years in like, two weeks. That was tough.”

Grobler: “I think on some level, New York will always be some form of home to us. I don’t know if we’ll move back there again, we’ve been toying with the idea. But you know, the pandemic kind of removed all the good things about New York. All the things we love, like walking down the street, random people together, like going to restaurants and doing all that stuff. And suddenly, you couldn’t do any of that. You were just in your apartment with your kid. So in that time, it just felt like it was more important for us to be closer to family, because you can create a bubble of people that is like a safe zone.”

Beranek: “The move has been great for our work because we were able to put the studio in our apartment. For me, being a new mom and wanting to be present, it was nice for me to be able to work from home. That was the best move we could do at the time. But now we’re back in America, and I’m like, ‘Oh, what now?’” [ Laughs ]

I love what you said about creating a bubble of community and family. Those themes pop up throughout the album, alongside some meditations on the role the internet has played in the last two years. Could you speak more about the pandemic experiences that shaped ‘Utopia’?

Grobler: “When we moved to Germany, we went from this totally isolated existence – living in upstate New York for a few months – to being around family and having meals around a table again. It kind of felt like we returned from a long voyage at sea where we were lost in the waves and suddenly we returned.

“That warmth, I think, was really inspiring to us. When our gear arrived from the States, we were like, ‘Why don’t we just keep writing?’ We felt relaxed and felt really good being around the people we love. There was this suppressed creative energy that just suddenly came out in a really lighthearted way, and that’s kind of what became ‘Utopia’.”

Beranek: “However, that was a weird time, and all sorts of emotions go through your body. Obviously there’s a divided world and all the news, and all this – like, how do you process that?”

Grobler: “‘Separate World’ was basically [about] the pandemic, ‘Hey Now’ [was written] maybe a month into it, where we were just like, ‘What’s happening?’ So yeah, I think ‘Utopia’ is something that encapsulates both sides of the experience. It’s a slightly lighthearted thing where we were like, ‘Let’s make people feel good. Let’s look to the future and feel positive.’ But also, it’s about processing those feelings of isolation and sadness.”

St. Lucia

‘Utopia’ sounds like a significant change from the anthemic synth-rock sound of the last few albums and adopts a more retro vibe, probably more like the stuff that you listened to growing up. How did you come to decide on that aesthetic?

Grobler: “We were on a major label for a long time, and they really saw us as a band that could make it on alternative radio in the States. And in the States, alternative radio is like an institution. Everything that gets played there is loud as fuck. But in the last few years, I just noticed [how] a lot of the music that I was actually listening to wasn’t as loud as that stuff. The classic records that I love – whether it’s Peter Gabriel ’s ‘So’ or Fleetwood Mac ‘s ‘Rumours’ or ‘OK Computer’– they’re not massively loud records. And then there are a lot of new artists as well, like Parcels from Australia? Their records are not super loud, they’re very dynamic. And so I started to feel, ‘Does it have to be loud anymore?’

“I really upgraded my studio situation; I just wanted to make sure everything was the highest quality going in. I worked with [mix engineer] Chris Zane a lot to make things not feel that taxing on the ear, you know? It could be background music, but you could listen to it, and there’s a lot [of detail].”

Could you each choose a favourite song off the album and tell us why?

Beranek: “Well, mine’s ‘The Golden Age’ going into ‘Memory’. That combo, I want to put that on repeat.”

Grobler: “ I think right now for me, it’s ‘Gimme The Night’, which is the most recent single. I just think it almost feels like a perfect pop song. It has a bit of darkness to it. It’s got a bit of a wink, you know? It kind of makes a bit of fun of influencer culture and that whole thing. There’s just something about it that feels good to me. It’s got a strong ABBA -slash- Bee Gees quality to it.”

What do you hope listeners take away from the record?

Grobler: “Follow the love, don’t follow the fear.”

Beranek: “Oh, that’s a good one. Damn.”

Grobler: “As a musician, you make art that hopefully reflects who you are and your experience of life. And I think, often the purpose only reveals itself after you [finish creating]. I think, more and more, this [captures] us fighting through this really dark and weird time in our lives; it was us fighting for what we believe in: light, and beauty, and love, and humanity, and warmth, and trusting the humans around us and all these things. It’s us fighting through that thing that was pressing down on us, you know? And I think we came out with something that isn’t just positive or just sad. It kind of encapsulates all the feelings that we went through and the hopes that we had during that time.”

St. Lucia New York, New York

Led by husband-and-wife duo South Africa-born Jean-Philip Grobler and Germany-born Patti Beranek, St. Lucia retreat from a fractured world on fire and into the glow of a rapturous synth-spiked electro-pop catharsis—like a dance party at the edge of existence. With new work on the horizon through Nettwerk Records, the group beams out a light of their own and shines brighter than ever. ...   more

The Band St. Lucia Reveals How They Got the Name, Secret Talents, and More

In the two-plus years since their debut LP, When the Night , made waves in the synth-pop dance music scene, St. Lucia (composed of Jean-Philip Grobler, Patti Beranek, Ross Clark, Nick Paul, and Dustin Kaufman, all pictured above at New York City's Webster Hall) has stayed faithful to what they're best at: putting on incredible live shows everywhere from Coachella to Kansas City, producing standout '80s reminiscent grooves, and having a damn good time doing what they love. Which is all incredibly evident in their sophomore album, Matter , one we've been hot to get our hands on for months. Now that we've finally gotten to hear it, we're addicted—the compilation sounds like fun, which only enhances its listening appeal. And for this second record, the gang left no instinct unexplored: "We just put everything in there," South African-born frontman Jean told us. "Anything we wanted to include, we recorded. There were horns, brass, drums, just everything you can imagine."

"It's easy to take a quick and easy route," added bandmate (and Jean's wife!) Patti. "But I think in the long run, going through the pain [of mixing] and doing it all is more rewarding, you know?" The result? An energetic compilation from start to finish that's infused with the vibrant spirit of a band we adore. Finding them at ease at Webster Hall—despite the fact that Matter was just released the previous day and the gang was due in a few short hours to kick off their headlining tour—made spending last Saturday evening with them and talking to Jean (far right) and Patti (bottom center) so incredibly enjoyable. On the heels of a great night grooving, we played a quick round of 20ish questions, while their opening band sound checked on the stage below us. Listen in, this one's fun:

Today is day one of your headlining tour. So what was the first thing that you guys did when you woke up this morning?

__Jean:__Coffee and check our phones. That's the boring (but true!) answer.

What's the first thing you look at on your phone?

__Jean:__Twitter

__Patti:__Well, my family lives in Europe. We have this family chat, so usually they bombard me at night, and I wake up to it. So, that's my first thing: family chat.

What's your favorite thing to do in New York if you have a free weekend?

__Jean:__See friends, go out, or have people over to our apartment and make some food, have some drinks.

So you're big entertainers. Are you a good chef?

Jean: Yeah, we love it. And we're pretty good. Patti's better than I am. She's learned so many amazing skills from her mom, who is Taiwanese and cooks amazing Taiwanese food.

__Patti:__I miss my mom's food.

What's your favorite thing to make?

__Patti:__Ooh, depends on the mood. You [ looking at Jean ] make bombueti.

__Jean:__I like to make bombueti, which is basically the South African national dish. It's basically a South African curry shepherd's pie kind of thing.

Sounds delicious. So, moving on, why are you called St. Lucia?

Patti: Because Jean didn't know what to do, so he took a map of South Africa—and there's a St. Lucia in South Africa—and he took a pen and it hit on the fifth try. Everything just came together, and it was like "Oh, that's kind of tropical, magical too. Yeah, cool."

__Jean:__The moment I hit that name, it was like everything about when you think of the name St. Lucia: a tropical place, a place to escape to, a place you might have some sort of hazy nostalgic memories, and I felt like that was the sort of music I was making.

__Why does your album Matter matter? __

__Jean:__I think it matters because if I look at the music scene right now, there are a lot of people trying really, really hard to be cool, you know? And we're going after what we think is beautiful, rather than what we think is just cool. We're not denying any of our whims, so it's just music that is awesome. It's us, and it's not pushing the uncool influences aside in order to make it something. To me, it feels refreshing in a sense.

You guys sing about love and finding love, but what's your favorite part about being in love? What do you love about love?

__Patti:__When you get to do the things you love with someone you love, they just get even better, you know? I think just to have the support and experience, it just can't get better. That's the fuel of life, I think.

__Taking a cue from the song "Rescue Me," tell me a secret that not many people know about you. __

__Jean:__My secret talent is doing the chipmunk voice. [ Jean proceeds to say "Hi, I'm Jean. Hello," in the perfect chipmunk voice. ]

Have you found that dancing is dangerous? When you're onstage leaping and high jumping?

__Patti:__You've definitely hurt a few others almost. I guess we haven't gone there yet, but I've definitely swerved away from your leaping guitar like, whoa, buddy. My capoeira skills came in.

__Jean:__I used to do this huge jump off the drum riser. I had a good way of landing so I wouldn't hurt myself, but then one time I landed on my elbow. It still is so sore when I touch it, and this was maybe like a year and a half ago.

On the subject of danger, what is your stance on crowd surfing?

__Patti:__I would love to crowd surf. My only problem is sometimes I like to wear skirts, and then I don't know about the knicker thing, just being like, "Hello, I'm here."

Later that night...

Say all of you guys are selected to be on Survivor Band Edition. Who wins?

Patti: I do. I would survive.

__Jean:__I think Patti would win, yeah.

Going back to this picture when you were 12 or 13 in boys' choir...what was going on in your head?

__Jean:__I was about to hit puberty at that point. That time in my life was crazy. I was in boarding school and living away from my family. I was definitely a little bit embarrassed about wearing that bib!

#tbt to being 12 or 13 at the Drakensberg Boys Choir School. Yes, that was our performance outfit. Yes, I'm thinking of bringing it back.

A photo posted by St. Lucia (@stlucia) on Jan 14, 2016 at 6:22am PST

Bring back the ruffly bib, there's nothing better. Patti, Diamonds or pearls?

__Patti:__Diamonds.

Denim or leather for you, Jean?

__Jean:__I think right now denim.

If you guys could go back in time and live in any time period, what decade would you like to live in?

__Patti:__Maybe '30s, art deco. I think that was a time when things were really, aesthetically beautiful. There was a big emphasis on that.

__Jean:__I think for me the sort of golden James Bond era. You know, when the world was a little unexplored. Although I think I'm pretty excited about being here now, you know? I just think yes, even though the world is so messed up in so many ways, it always has been, you know? If you look at the world as well now, there's a lot of stuff that is way better than it was. Pretty happy being here.

Is there a spot you're most looking forward to on your tour?

__Patti:__The west coast for some warmth. Sun and warmth.

__Jean:__I'm really looking forward to going to London as well because we went to school in England. We've just had some issues with getting our music out there and stuff, so whenever we get to go, it's always a huge treat because we love it.

Image may contain Human Person Lighting Musical Instrument Musician Crowd and Stage

What songs do you guys sing in the shower?

__Jean:__I normally make up songs about what I'm doing in the moment. Like, "I'm washing myself with some soap. Gonna rinse my hair now."

__Patti:__Me too

__Jean:__That's just kind of like a St. Lucia thing that we all do as a band. When Dustin started dating his current girlfriend, Cara, she said to Dustin "It's really cute how Jean sings about what he's doing. It's so sweet." And it's only a joke, but I just kind of do it.

What's been your craziest fan encounter?

__Jean:__We haven't had anything really bad or crazy, but we do have a super fan. Her name is Megan Brown. She's awesome, awesome, awesome. I think she came to like, seven of the shows when we supported Ellie Goulding and then on our first headline tour, she came to like, eight shows.

__Patti:__I think she's basically seen 25 St. Lucia shows.

Fill in the blank: __ is the new black. __

__Jean:__Gold.

__Patti:__And black marble.

Can you describe the album in three words?

__Jean:__Lush. Diverse. Pop.

Last question: What's next for you guys? You have this tour, does anyone want to dip their fingers in acting?

__Patti:__I would love to dip my fingers in acting, that would be great. Dustin likes that too. We just decided when we were doing the "Dancing on Glass" video that we should all become actors. We were like "Let's do it," but we're still going to do this. More tours, festivals in the summer. Lots of festivals.

__Jean:__Making more music, I'd love to do some more production. If some cool acting stuff comes up, that would be sick.
