I love the look, it's very cool and can hang just as it is. It functionality isn't the best but I don't think the graphic is made to be solved, so it's ok. Again, the look of the stickers and the matte and gloss details are cool. Good little piece.

'Star Trek: Picard' Borg Cube, Explained After Episode 3

[This story contains spoilers for Star Trek Picard , season one, episode three.]

As mystery boxes go, Star Trek: Picard just revealed a significant chunk of what’s inside theirs in the latest episode.

Following a flashback 14 years prior to the start of the series, when we see why Admiral Picard (Patrick Stewart) retired from Starfleet, “The End Is the Beginning” doubles down on the Romulan’s agenda aboard their salvaged Borg cube (AKA The Artifact) as former drone-turned-bureaucrat Hugh (Jonathan Del Arco) works with Soji (Isa Briones) to mine a group of ex-Borgs for intel in a way that upends everything we know about the Federation’s most lethal enemy.

Long story slightly less long: The Romulans are plotting something on the evil side (shocker), the Borg’s collective consciousness is critical to that plot, and key players in the Federation have worked and are working behind the scenes to help the bad guys do their thing. From Picard’s resignation to the secret (ish) history of the Borg, here’s how it all breaks down:

Why Picard Retired

“Retired” in this case is a euphemism for “resigned.” Because that’s what the former Enterprise captain had to do when the Federation balked at his proposal for a second attempt to aid the Romulans in their relocation effort following the rogue A-500 androids going all murder-y on Mars’ Utopia Planitia Shipyard — which resulted in tens of thousands of deaths.

In the episode, Picard tells his (former) close friend and colleague, Rafi (Michelle Hurd), that several Federation worlds struggled to get on board with the original plan. So, of course, any follow-up efforts would be even a harder sell, which was proven in the meeting Picard just walked out of when we first see him. At that meeting, Picard gave Starfleet an ultimatum: Either they can sign off on his new proposal or he can sign a letter of resignation. Picard obviously did the latter, and without consulting Rafi — whose career is also on the line, given that she was Picard’s Number Two on the rescue effort.

As a result, Rafi loses her position at Starfleet as well — and, in an uncharacteristic move for Picard, he spends the next 14 years never once checking up on her or asking how she is. Which festers into deserved resentment and anger on Rafi’s part.

Following their last encounter, we pick up with the two of them in the present day, where Picard apologizes for his behavior, but not before asking for Rafi’s help for his super secret mission to find out why elements of his dead friend, the android Data, turned up in the body of Picard’s other dead friend, the near-perfect biological/android mix Dahj (Isa Briones).

Rafi still maintains her 14-year-old theory (with some evidence to back it up) that the Federation and the Romulan secret police, known as the Tal Shiar, conspired in the lead-up to the destruction of both Mars and the rescue armada. Why would the Romulans work with Starfleet to kill their own people? Or have a hand in the thing they hate, androids, going rogue? Good questions, Jean-Luc! The answers to both Picard will find in part in outer space.

What Does Picard Need With a Starship?

Technically, he needs an unregistered starship captained by a man named Rios (Santiago Cabrera). He’s a former Starfleet officer and ExO, who lost his captain somehow on a mission that went bad. (That mission and the name of the vessel involved went south in a way that required them to be erased from Starfleet records. Which means we’ll soon know the truth about what went down as we get to know Rios more.)

Rios is full of Han Solo/Mal Reynolds energy, as he finds himself succumbing to Picard’s gift for “speeches” and his own ethical code to help the legendary officer out. With Rafi and Dr. Jurati (Alison Pill) in tow, the crew set out on a mission to find the missing android expert, Bruce Maddox, at something called Freecloud. Rafi’s ties to what appears to be some kind of gambling establishment makes her very uncomfortable going there, but she can’t turn down her old friend for one last mission.

What the Romulans Are Doing With the Borg

The Borg collective is like the iCloud and Slack for this race of interconnected beings. From the moment aliens or humans are assimilated into it, they join a chorus of thousands in service of the hive mind. Once disconnected from the collective, like Hugh was in the classic Next Generation episode “I, Borg,” they are free of those voices. But we learn this week that what’s not silent is the echo or imprint the individual drone’s experiences have within this mess of overlapping voices speaking as one mind.

Thanks to Hugh and Soji’s efforts in the Borg Reclamation Project, they’ve discovered that the collective share a common narrative full of archetypal information from past experiences but it is just as relevant and timely to them as the day’s news is to humans. As the executive director of the Project, Hugh appears to want to tap into this knowledge — especially with the help of the only Romulans on record to have been assimilated by the Borg. They are also the only former drones to be … a little off. (Think the mental institution Brad Pitt’s character calls home in 12 Monkeys ).

Why this is exactly, and why one of the ex-drones seems to know Soji is a clone with hints of seeing her in the future, remains (you guessed it) a mystery.

History [ ]

The only known encounter with the tactical cube happened in 2377 , by the crew of the USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant . The cube was chosen for its proximity to the Federation ship as they planned deployment of a nanovirus to infect the Collective to allow drones to retain memories following their regeneration cycles. During engagement, the cube managed to destroy the Delta Flyer shuttlecraft and inflict heavy damage to Voyager before the Borg Queen initiated the cube's auto-destruct . ( VOY : " Unimatrix Zero ", " Unimatrix Zero, Part II ")

Technical data [ ]

The tactical cube differed from the standard Borg cube in several ways, the most notable being the extensive hull armor that covered large portions of the exterior hull of the ship. The interior was also slightly altered from what is known of Borg architecture. The vessel's central plexus was protected by multi-regenerative security fields . ( VOY : " Unimatrix Zero ", " Unimatrix Zero, Part II ")

Appendices [ ]

Background information [ ].

The tactical cube appeared only in VOY : " Unimatrix Zero " and " Unimatrix Zero, Part II ".

For further information on the studio model , see Borg cube model .

Apocrypha [ ]

  • The Borg tactical cube was also used in the climactic final level of Star Trek: Legacy . Oddly, creators of the game boasted in a video interview that the vessel was of their creation, and that it had been designed especially for the game's finale. The Borg tactical cube model had first appeared on Star Trek: Voyager six years before. Doug Drexler, the model designer, was not mentioned at all during the interview in question. Also, when the vessel appears during the mission, Admiral Janeway says she has encountered such a vessel before, and had help destroying it, clearly referencing the events of the episode.
  • Tactical cubes are also featured in Star Trek: Armada II , in which eight of them can combine to form a massive tactical fusion cube.
  • Ships of this class also feature in Star Trek: Conquest ; however, the ship is ranked as a "cruiser" and has inferior fire power and shielding to an average cube.
  • Tactical cubes are found in several campaign missions of Star Trek Online , classified as a dreadnought. Each one has approximately two times the weaponry of a standard cube and roughly four times the hit points, requiring a small fleet to destroy.

Screen Rant

Star trek: picard's borg cube was first introduced in voyager.

Star Trek: Picard introduces the Artifact, a wrecked Borg Cube. But has the abandoned vessel actually been mentioned previously in Voyager?

Was  Star Trek: Picard 's Artifact site referenced long ago in an episode of  Voyager ? Introduced in the premiere episode, the Artifact is a Borg Cube that attempted to assimilate a Romulan scout ship and suffered a " submatrix collapse " as a result, rendering the ship and the drones on board inert. In the wake of the Cube's fall, Romulans swept in and established their Reclamation Site, aiming to salvage what technology they could from the vessel. Meanwhile, the Federation were given permission to carry out their own project on board, reverting the Borg severed from the Collective into humans under the guidance of  The Next Generation 's Hugh.

The Artifact is a vital piece in  Star Trek: Picard 's overall puzzle, not just as the workplace of Soji , but as an intrinsic link between the Borg and the Romulans that has yet to be explained.  Star Trek: Voyager season 5 included the episode "Timeless," where a crash kills everyone on board but Chakotay and Harry Kim, who were safely on the Delta Flyer at the time. Although both men make their way back to Earth, they spend the next 15 years ruing the mistakes that led to Voyager's destruction and decide to alter the timeline. Sending a message to his past self, Kim succeeds in changing the course of history and the Voyager avoids calamity.

Related:  Star Trek: Picard Finally Gave Us The Riker TNG's Movies Never Did

The most interesting part of "Timeless" in relation to  Star Trek: Picard , however, are the materials Kim and Chakotay use to execute their time-bending plan, the main ingredient being a Borg temporal transmitter. While the two  Voyager  characters stole the device through Starfleet, the episode reveals that Starfleet Intelligence initially swiped the item from the wreckage of a Borg Cube in the Beta Quadrant. As pointed out by several  Star Trek fans on Reddit, the Borg Cube mentioned by Chakotay in Star Trek: Voyager  could actually be the Artifact from Star Trek: Picard .

The "where" and "when" of this theory both line up remarkably well. In geographical terms,  Voyager places its defunct Cube in the Beta Quadrant, and in  Star Trek: Picard 's sixth episode, "The Impossible Box," an on-screen caption confirms the Artifact is also located in the Beta Quadrant. In terms of the timeline, the two Borg Cubes also coincide neatly. The future timeline of "Timeless" takes place in 2390, marginally less than a decade shy of when  Star Trek: Picard begins. The "5843 days without an assimilation" sign glimpsed on the Artifact confirms that the ship has been out of action for 16 years, meaning it would've been floating around in the Beta Quadrant during the future narrative of "Timeless." This establishes the "when" of the theory, and a possible sequence of events emerges: a Borg Cube suffers a submatrix collapse in the Beta Quadrant and is taken over by Romulans, Starfleet Intelligence steal the temporal transmitter from said Cube, Chakotay and Kim steal it from their former employers to rescue the Voyager.

It's unlikely that this parallel between  Star Trek: Picard and Voyager is a coincidence. From a fictional point of view, the Beta Quadrant may be a huge expanse of space, but Borg Cubes don't go down easily. It's not likely that  Star Trek: Picard would introduce another Cube ruin when one has already been established in that same region of space by a past series. In production terms,  Star Trek: Picard has provided a treasure trove of Easter eggs thus far, some extremely obscure, and this is more likely to be another in the same vein, rather than a happy accident.

Naturally, it's also plausible that the connection between  Star Trek: Picard and  Voyager is no accident at all, and that the temporal transmitter could factor into Jean-Luc's current adventure. In "Timeless," the two other components needed to change the future were both sourced from Seven of Nine , and with Jeri Ryan returning in the new series, either Picard or the Zhat Vash may seek to change the course of history in order to engineer an outcome more favorable to their ethics.

Borg Cube Feature Spotlight

By gabriel 7 November 2023

Resistance is Futile!

We are no strangers to the Borg in Star Trek Fleet Command. Whether it’s the officer on our ships, the Ex Borg Faction, or the many Borg foes scattered across the galaxy, they are a force to reckon with!. However, for the first time in Star Trek Fleet Command history, we have a piece of their tech never thought to be attainable. Commanders, the Borg Cube is at your disposal now, as one of your ships, and we have all the information you need to get up to speed:

Acquiring and Tiering Up

The Borg Cube is available to all Commanders operations level 28 and above. The blueprints can be obtained from the free and elite tracks of the Update 60 battle pass. Unlike any ship before, the Borg Cube is meant to grow with you as you progress through your Star Trek Fleet Command journey and scales based on the power of your other Faction Ships. The Borg Cube is formidable and will be on par (or better) with your  faction ship’s power. You can see the breakdown of the tier requirements for the Borg Cube here:

As you can see, the Borg Cube grows progressively stronger, all the way to operations level 70, at which point, it will become the most powerful ship in Star Trek Fleet Command, surpassing the strongest Epic faction ship.

Borg Cutting Beam

On top of its natural combat prowess, the Borg Cube has a Cutting Beam, one-of-a-kind active ship ability that allows you to do damage outside of normal combat. To charge the Borg Cutting Beam, you must deal hull damage in normal combat situations with the Borg Cube. Once charged, you may select the ship you wish to fire upon from anywhere in the same system and select the Borg Cutting Beam Icon on the enemy pop-up. Note: The Borg Cutting Beam can not be used on Armadas, Stations, or Alliance Star Bases. Also, the Borg Cutting Beam will have diminishing returns on its damage when attacking a target a higher ops level than you are.

The Borg Cutting Beam is also unique in that it bypasses all defenses and does direct hull damage. Current officers in Star Trek Fleet Command and research not found specifically for the Borg Cube will not affect its damage or charge rate Destroying hostiles with the Borg Cutting beam provides full loot that you would typically gain from the target as well as Technological Distinctiveness.

star trek borg puzzle cube

Upgrade and Research By destroying enemies with the Borg Cutting Beam, you will be rewarded with Technological Distinctiveness. This material can only be seen in the battle log after destroying a hostile. The amount of Technological Distinctiveness you receive will increase based on the level of hostile you destroy with the Borg Cutting Beam.

star trek borg puzzle cube

This material can then be exchanged in the refinery by navigating to the “Borg Cube Refinery in the “Support Tab” for either upgrade material to tier up your Borg Cube, or for the material needed to progress the new Borg Cube research nodes, which can be found in the Ex-Borg research tree. As you progress your Borg Cube, you will need Borg Data Nodes from one of the three factions (Federation, Klingon, and Romulan). Upon reaching one of the above milestones with your faction ships, you will be rewarded with a Borg Data Node from the corresponding faction, which can be claimed in the gifts tab. This means that if you so choose, you can acquire and tier up three Borg Cubes. Note: If you already have a faction ship high enough for, say, a tier 8 Borg Cube, then you will get all Borg Data Nodes needed to get to tier 8.

This is a power never before seen in Star Trek Fleet Command, and we know you will use it well.

Remember: We are the Borg, You will be Assimilated, Resistance is Futile!

In a display of creativity, a Starfield player known as nathantravis2377 has recreated the Borg cube from Star Trek within Starfield 's vast universe . This remarkable feat was shared on Reddit, where the player showcased their ship, complete with functional systems. When asked about the firepower of the Borg cube, nathantravis2377 mentioned that it features four particle beams and four ballistic auto turrets along with four shields, staying true to the Borg's emphasis on redundancy and defensive capabilities. Additionally, the player clarified that the interior of the cube is hollow, with access points to the landing bay, companionway, and cockpit.

Players were also intrigued by the details of the Borg cube recreation, asking questions about its class, mobility, engines, and internal layout. Nathantravis2377 provided insights into the ship's design, revealing that it houses a C-class reactor with a single SAL 6000 engine, resulting in low mobility due to its massive size and structural complexity. These kinds of recreations highlight Starfield ’s robust ship customization tools , allowing players to unleash their creativity and design spacecraft of various shapes and functionalities.

What Is Star Trek's Borg Cube?

The Borg cube, a massive and imposing spacecraft from the Star Trek franchise , is instantly recognizable for its cubic shape adorned with intricate geometric patterns. The Borg, a cybernetic species with a collective consciousness, utilize these cubes as formidable vessels capable of assimilating other species and technologies into their collective. The player's Borg cube faithfully captures the essence of this iconic Star Trek vessel.

After over seven months since its release, Starfield continues to captivate players with its immersive gameplay. Nathantravis2377's recreation of the Borg cube stands as a testament to the game's potential for creative players.

Developed by Bethesda Game Studios, Starfield is a sci-fi action role-playing game where players interact with multiple factions, engage in combat, customize their main character and ship, as well as explore a universe that features over 100 systems and 1,000 planets.

ODN RELAYS UNDER HEAVY LOAD

star trek borg puzzle cube

Welcome to 'Star Trek: Borg - Remastered', cadet. Pay attention to this training - it might ensure your survival.

What is 'Star Trek: Borg'?

'Star Trek: Borg' was a single-player 1996 FMV game developed and published by Simon & Schuster (published by Virgin Interactive in some regions) for PC and Macintosh.

'Star Trek: Borg - Remastered' is a fan project attempting to recreate the game in-browser, using AI to remaster the original game footage to HD quality using a rare Japanese DVD release of the game.

How to play

You can control the game from this LCARS interface. On desktop and tablet, you'll see the 'Holonovel commands' on a panel to the left. On mobile, you'll see the control buttons above.

  • START/RESTART PROGRAM: Launches a new game.
  • HELP/CONTINUE: Hides current game and shows this help screen (and vice-versa).
  • FREEZE/RESUME PROGRAM: Pauses and unpauses gameplay.
  • SCAN: Pauses gameplay and allows you to use Q's tricorder to scan in-game items.
  • CHAPTERS: Allows you to jump between chapters.
  • SETTINGS: Brings up the settings screen, allowing you to select options such as video quality.
  • TRICORDER: When using the tricorder, sometimes there will be related entries to read which will give you more information that may be vital to your mission. You can access these by clicking or tapping the buttons to the left of the currently-displayed entry.

PLEASE NOTE: The game will run with the highest video quality by default. If you're playing on mobile data, this will use roughly a megabyte of your data allowance per second. It will also cause choppy playback on slower connections. If you face either of these issues, it is highly recommended you visit SETTINGS first and lower the video quality. UPDATE: This project has gained far more attention than I was expecting! As such, the load on my server is higher than expected. My apologies if you encounter frequent pauses to video playback or lag when switching scenes, even if you've lowered the video quality. This is usually caused by many users playing the game simultaneously. I've patched in a "buffering" message which triggers when this occurs.

The original box art for 'Star Trek: Borg'

  • IS THIS OFFICIAL? No, not it any way. This is a fan project. Please see the legal disclaimer below for more details.
  • HOW CAN I CONTACT YOU? Please feel free to comment on the trailer video on YouTube .
  • IS THIS LEGAL? That's a grey area. It isn't possible to play the original Borg game on any modern PC or Mac, and it isn't possible to purchase it anywhere any more. Technically, the game is "abandonware". That said, the legal rights holders of Star Trek would be well within their rights to issue me with a C&D order - and should that happen I will, of course, comply and take this site offline. My advice would be to enjoy this while you can, because it might go away.
  • I FOUND A BUG - CAN YOU FIX IT? Yes, please let me know by commenting on the trailer . I did this in my spare time and, although I did my best to bugtest, I probably haven't caught everything.
  • I'M EXPERIENCING A LOT OF LAG/BUFFERING. CAN YOU UPGRADE YOUR SERVER? I'm sorry about that, but I'm afraid not. This is a purely not-for-profit fan project, so I don't have a budget for such things. I'm a freelance web developer, so I have my own dedicated server and that's what I used. But that leads us nicely onto...
  • DO YOU HAVE A PATREON, GOFUNDME, INDIEGOGO ETC.? It's very kind of you to ask, but no. I have no intention or desire to profit from this project in any way. It's just a personal passion project that I put together for my own entertainment, experimentation and experience.

Borg

The Borg Cube fills one of the central roles of the Borg Collective. They are well armed battleships with many capabilities such as tractor beams, subsystem targeting and sensor jamming. They usually travel alone, or sometimes accompanied by Probes and/or Spheres .

The Cube is heavily armed and very durable. The best advantage a player has over this vessel is speed. The Cube is slow, like all battleships, so you can usually strike the same shield many times until you have weakened it. Then the Cube is very vulnerable to Quantum or Tricobalt torpedoes . Even the death throes of a Cube can be dangerous; being too close to one when it explodes can severely damage most starships, if not destroy them outright.

Notes [ | ]

  • The combination of Tractor Beam , Borg Shield Neutralizer , Boarding Party , Torpedo: High Yield and the large Death Explosion make this ship exceptionally dangerous for a Battleship. As such, many groups prefer to kill them before engaging any accompanying ships like Spheres or Probes, even if they have greater numbers. This makes it one of the few enemies in STO where the "weakest foe first" targeting rule does not apply.

Star Trek's Writers Didn't Invent The Borg Queen – A Paramount Executive Did

W hen the Borg were first introduced on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (in the 1989 episode "Q Who"), they were terrifying. Clearly inspired by the works of H.R. Giger, the Borg sported tubes, servos, wires, and ineffable black machinery sprouting from their bodies. The Borg were made up of other species that had been kidnapped and assimilated into their collective, their minds wiped and replaced with a singular, terrifying machine consciousness. The Borg traversed space in outsized cube-shaped vessels, likewise crisscrossed with wires and ducts. They only had one goal: to grow. As Q (John de Lancie) described them, the Borg are the ultimate users. They look out at the universe and emotionlessly see nothing but raw materials to expand with.

The Borg returned periodically throughout "Next Generation," becoming one of the show's more impressive antagonists. The race of soulless machine people proved to be a great villain.

Naturally, when "Next Generation" moved into feature films, the Borg had to return. Jonathan Frakes' 1996 film "Star Trek: First Contact" featured the Borg traveling back in time to a vulnerable moment of Earth's history, hoping to alter events in their favor. In the past, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise discovered a new Borg wrinkle: they didn't have a group consciousness but were ruled by a sweaty, malevolent, emotional Queen (Alice Krige). Giving the Borg a "boss monster" was a silly twist that has, unfortunately, become a key part of "Star Trek" lore.

In the oral history book "The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years: From The Next Generation to J. J. Abrams," edited by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross, "First Contact" co-writer Brannon Braga revealed that the Borg Queen was invented by a Paramount executive named Jonathan Dolgen ... who thought the Borg were boring.

To elucidate: "Star Trek: First Contact" is about a Borg attack on Earth that is cut short by the tactical savvy of Starfleet and the Enterprise-E. Just before their ship is destroyed, the Borg send a small spherical vessel through a mysterious time portal. The Enterprise pursues, getting caught briefly in a "time wake" and for a moment see that history has been altered. The Earth's population is now nine billion Borgs. The Enterprise goes back to the year 2063 to prevent their timeline alteration.

Audiences finally meet the Borg Queen a third of the way into the film. Unlike the other Borgs, the Queen is individualistic, sexual, and emotional and claims to speak for the Borg. Uncharacteristically, she states very specific goals. She was a fun, slinky, terrifying movie monster, but she made the Borg less threatening; the previously single-minded cyborgs now had a leader one could negotiate with.

Which is how Dolgen wanted it. The exec said that the Borg were dull, amounting to little more than robot zombies. They needed a voice. Screenwriter Brannon Braga hastened to come up with a "fix." Braga recalled:

"We did a substantial rewrite. Also, it was Jonathan Dolgen at the time who ran Paramount, the biggest cheese there was, and he was also a ravenous 'Star Trek' fan. Rick and I used to go into his office for meetings all the time, and he would say, 'Oh, I really like this episode and that episode.' I think he was the one who said the Borg are boring. They're just zombies, you need a voice. We thought, 'S***, okay, it's like a hive. Like a bee colony. Let's make a queen,' and it was probably the best invention we could have possibly come up with."

A hive? Sure.

Assimilate This

Turning the Borg into a hive made the villains a lot less interesting. Instead of being an unreasonable machine intelligence, there was now a hierarchy on board a Borg ship, with a "captain" calling the shots and the "drones" taking orders. And if the Queen was sexual and emotional, she was suddenly prone to trickery and manipulation herself. Indeed, in the climax of "First Contact," Data (Brent Spiner) hoodwinks the Borg Queen; she is emotionally distracted enough to let Data (Brent Spiner) re-aim the ship's torpedos.

But Braga was just following orders from Paramount, and a Borg Queen was his most elegant solution. At least the change was demanded by a Trekkie with his own vision of the franchise, and not an ignorant moneyman looking for toyetic images.

Early in the scriptwriting process, it seemed that Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) was to be the hero. Braga realized that Picard should be the one to face off against the Borg again, saying:

"I don't think anyone realized by shuffling Picard and Riker around it would change things so monumentally, but I'm glad it did. Because it was the next movie, and it had been two years since you had last seen Picard, you kind of wanted to do big things with him. You wanted to have him fall in love and take a woman with him at the end. Actually, it was a good instinct on Patrick's part, because you want to see these characters in new situations. But this is an action movie. A romance? What a stupid idea. In the rewrite, the Borg meets the captain and he's our action hero."

"First Contact," despite its action film trappings , was a big hit, and is often considered the best of the "NextGen" movies. A Hive it is.
