Explore other cities of saudi arabia, the city of roses.

Taif is called the City of Roses for good reason. The famous fragrant flowers that grow in this city and the surrounding valleys are one of a kind. Visitors from all over the country visit Taif especially in the summer months as the temperature here is considerably more welcoming. Taif has also earned the name of ‘The Summer Capital of Saudi Arabia’ as many people prefer its milder temperature and head towards the city to escape the blistering heat of the desert. Tourists also love Taif. Even traveling on the winding mountain road that leads to Taif is an adventure in itself.

In terms of population, Taif is the 6th most populous city of Saudi Arabia. It is located at an elevation of 1879 meters above sea level. The city has abundant natural beauty and is also known for the cultivation of grapes, figs, pomegranates, and honey. Taif has often been declared the best summer destination in Saudi Arabia.

Taif has seen various transfers of power throughout its history. From Thaqif tribe, to Ottoman Sultans, and Arab Kings, Taif has been passed on from one ruler to another. When the kingdom of Saudi Arabia came into being, Taif underwent a massive modernization campaign. Previously it had remained stuck in time and isolated from other regions.

With access to electricity in the 1940s, Taif quickly transformed into a modern city. King Faisal inaugurated the 87 km Makkah to Taif mountain highway in 1965. This greatly helped in integrating the city with other regions. So much so that it quickly rose to become one of the top summer destinations of the country.

The cities of Taif and Al Shaafa are situated at around 2000 meters above sea level. Due to their relatively cooler climate, they offer a great summer retreat for domestic as well as international tourists. Taif is surrounded by the Hejaz mountains which are part of the greater Sarawat mountains. It is a plateau region and also contains some smaller valleys in the region.

The highest peak of Taif is Jabal Daka. You can go for an exciting adventure by driving on the curvy roads that lead to this point. Once on top, you can soak in some grand views. There is also the option to indulge in offroad adventure.

Cultural Life

Taif city has primarily relied on agriculture for sustenance. Its main export in the earlier days was the fragrant roses that it is famous for. The city has a number of different natural landmarks as well as historical sites and museums.

Souq Okaz was not just a historically significant souk but also a complete historic theater. It was a place for different tribes and customs to come together and exchange ideas as well as do commercial activities. Keeping this in mind, the Souq Okaz cultural festival was organized under the Saudi Seasons initiative. Apart from this, Taif also hosts the Crown Prince Camel Festival and Rose Festivals.

Like most other cities of Saudi Arabia, football is a popular sport in Taif. King Fahd Sports City in north Taif hosts various football tournaments and events.

Popular Attractions

The famed city of Roses, Taif is perched between the rocky mountains of the Makkah province. The view of the city can be enjoyed from the Taif Cable Cars (Telefric Al Hada) .

The geographical wonder, Al Wahbah Crater is also situated near the city of Taif. This is a must-visit spot as you rarely get to experience such an exquisite natural wonder anywhere else on the planet.

Qantara Mosque , also known as Masjid Madhoon is a popular site for tourists. It was built around 162 years ago during the Ottoman period. It gets its distinct, ancient look due to its inspiration from Abbasid architecture.

The Shubra Palace is an interesting spot to visit. It used to be a royal residence for King Abdulaziz. Now this marble-floored building has been converted into a museum and provides you a great sneak peek into the history of the region.

For visitors looking for an escape to nature, the impressive Saiysad National Park is a great retreat. The park also contains a kids' playground along with picnic spots around a small dam. You may also get to see some seasonal streams taking their course through nature. There is also a small zoo in Taif that can keep kids entertained for hours.

Taif: a hidden Saudi haven for nature lovers

Taif a hidden Saudi haven for nature lovers

Earlier this year, I took my first ever trip to Saudi Arabia, with broadcaster Zezi Ifore and director Amirah Tajdin, who were shooting a film in AlUla for Condé Nast Traveller focussed on exploring the country's unexpected locations. For the second part of Tajdin’s series, she partnered with Hayat Osamah, a Jeddah-born fashion photographer who lives and works in Riyadh. This time the destination was Taif, a city in the western Makkah Province amid the Hijaz mountains – and a place that neither I, nor Osamah, had explored before

Set at almost 2,000 metres above sea level, Taif’s lush landscapes and crisp air defy the conventional expectations of Saud Arabiai (which often conjures images of towering skyscrapers and endless deserts). Although the destination has a cooler climate than a desertscape such as AlUla, its history is equally rich, with agricultural roots that can be traced back to the sixth century AD. During Ottoman rule, the city was strategically located, serving as a hub for pilgrims travelling to Makkah. The name Ta'if originates from the Arabic word for wanderer, which felt particularly relevant for Osamah. “As a kid, I used to only pass by Taif, going to Jeddah,” she said. “It was more of a passage – we’d never actually stop and look around. But now, I've seen it and experienced it myself. It's mind blowing”

Despite the fact that it is the sixth most populous city in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, one of the first things that struck me about Taif’s landscape was the absence of crowds. In the mountains, surrounded by organic rock formations and a backdrop of vibrant greenery, we were even occasionally greeted by wild monkeys. We also met Saleh Al Omari, who showed us around his rustic stables and introduced us to Malaz, one of his horses. Amid the incredible scenery, it was poignant to watch Osamah connect with the beauty of her country. “The landscape feels very raw and I like to see rawness – it's not pretentious,” she said as she snapped pictures of the plants and flowers.

Taif a hidden Saudi haven for nature lovers

Taif also has a poetic nickname: the City of Roses. Its expansive rose fields, which bloom from March to April, produce petals that are harvested for highly sought-after rosewater and oils, used in perfumes by brands such as Chanel and Hèrmes. The annual Taif Rose Festival, held in May, is a visual and olfactory delight, when parades, exhibitions and cultural performances are staged to celebrate the region’s botanical heritage. The essence of rose is even combined with honey, a local speciality, and is known for its pure, unprocessed quality and health benefits. At the Taif souq, in the subtly renovated historic centre, you can discover these treasures within  peaceful surroundings. Despite the market's size, it doesn't have the hectic crowds of a big city market. Here, Osamah was shown a type of honey called Samora in a local store, before we made our way around the rest of the souq, which is filled with crafts, silver and gold jewellery, handmade soaps and a variety of jewel-like fruit. Before the end of our visit to Taif, we stopped off at Amou Faisal, a restaurant owned by Faisal Hamed Al Salmi, where Osamah shared a traditional dish of saleeg (meat and rice) with him.

Taif a hidden Saudi haven for nature lovers

“Taking a pause in nature is very necessary,” said Osamah of her experience in Taif. “For my creative process, for my spirituality… It’s not just something beautiful to look at, it’s more than that. Things To Do In Taif, The Unofficial Summer Capital And The Saudi’s City Of Roses

What if we told you of a place with snow in winter, blooming flowers in spring, and cool temperatures throughout the year? And what if we told you that this place was in a country known for its vast expanses of dunes and scorching hot sun? Sounds fictional, right?  But Taif is as real as it can be.

Nestled in the lap of the Hijaz mountain of the Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia, Taif lives and breathes beauty. And it is bound to leave you in awe if you thought Saudi Arabia was all dunes and dust.

With so much to offer and so many places to visit in Taif, it has bagged for itself the unofficial summer capital title. It has everything from fields of blooming roses to fruit markets filled with locally produced fruits, historical museums and a castle.

First Stop: Immerse Yourself In Everything Rose

taif roses

Shoot Instagram-worthy reels amid unique pink roses exclusive to Taif or witness the process of making rose water, rose oils and extracts from roses. It is worth noting that the roses of Taif are not limited to this region but are sought after by perfume giants like Chanel, Guerlain, Jimmy Choo, Givenchy and Ormonde Jayne!

Some places to immerse yourself in such a rose-y experience are the 120-year-old Al Qahdi Rose Factory, 24 hours farms like Al Shiokh farm, Rashid Al Qurashei Factory, and the very popular Al Gadhi factory.  Moreover, if you visit Taif during March-April, you can even attend the annual Taif Rose Festival at Al Rudaf Park hosted by the Ministry of Culture.

Second Stop: Fun Is On the Ground And In Air

taif cable cars

Home to the Middle East’s longest cable car ride, Taif is a sight to behold up in the air, too. The 4 km Taif cable car journey will serve you with marvellous sunset on the Sarawat Mountains for your eyes to soak in.

The Al Karr resort and the Green Mountain Park on the Al Hada Mountain offer the best weekend gateway activities for adults and kids. Pray tell, who would say no to a water park and an amusement park?

Third Stop: Time Travel At Palaces And Museums

Taif Museum

Some rocks 40 km north of Taif show how historically significant Taif has been. So important that it finds its mention in the holy scriptures of Islam when the prophet Muhammad visited this place.

The Shubra Castle was built in 1905 by the then-royal family and is now open to the public. So go find yourself marvelling at over 4,000-year-old relics and archaeological artefacts. If the culmination of Islamic architecture, Roman motifs and latticework fascinate you, the Shubra castle awaits.

The Sharif Museum is another must-visit place in Taif. This private museum’s owner, Al-Sharif Ali Bin Malbas, is said to have travelled lengths and breaths of the country to collect historical artefacts. You can even get your hands on some of these valuables at their periodic auctions.

Fourth Stop: Good Views Come Along With Good Food

Subia drink saudi arabia

The food in Taif is just as good as the views here. Imagine sipping some piping hot grated almond and cardamom tea when the chilly wind blows. In the evening, Taif lights up with fairy lights in cafes all around, and in Gen-Z terms is ‘no less than a vibe.’

Sobia drink is a signature drink of Taif known for its earthy and thirst-quenching properties. No wonder it is sold all over Taif during the month of Ramadan. Additionally, the famous local banana pudding called Masoub and the famous Saudi charcoal tea called Jamar tea is a must-try at the cafes and food stalls here.

Fifth Stop: Souqs Mandate A Shopping Spree

Taif Souq

The Taif souq is one of the biggest souqs in Saudi Arabia. Shop for handicrafts and ornaments at Souq Okaz. on the other hand, bag yourself boxes of organic local produce like pomegranates, peaches, apricots, figs and dates at Taif fruit market.

The best way to experience the souq is with a warm mint tea bought from one of the tea shops there.

Sixth Stop: Wander Into The Green And Wild

Al wahba crater saudi taif

Undoubtedly, nature has bestowed Taif plenty. Hence, the best way to end your trip to Taif would be to go on a hiking trail up the mountains there or down to the Al Wahba Crater. The 2 km wide and 250 m deep crater is definitely one of the major attractions of Taif.

Last but not least, there’s more for those who like to end their trip with some thrill and adventure. 25 km to the southwest of Taif is Al Shafa – the highest peak in the region. You can find access to dune bashing, quad biking and camel riding right there!

How To Reach Taif?

The most frequently asked question is if non-Muslims can go to Taif. And the answer is yes! It might take a little understanding of the routes for someone who is new there. Muslims can enter Taif from Mecca directly using Highway 15. But if you are planning to start your trip from Jeddah and are a non-muslim; start your journey from Highway 40. Upon nearing Mecca city, you will find a cutoff Route 298 or ‘Christian Bypass,’ follow along that route and it shall connect you the Route 15. Half an hour on this route and it will lead you straight into the scenic cloudy, foggy roads of Taif.

You know the place is promising when the roads leading you to it are a sight for the sire eyes! You can check out more details, here .

Marat — a saudi town with deep roots.

Marat — a Saudi town with deep roots

  • Administratively affiliated with Riyadh Province, Marat oversees several centers, villages and settlements, enjoying governmental facilities and private institutions that have contributed to its development and population growth

RIYADH: One of the oldest cities in Saudi Arabia’s Najd, Marat, lies tucked away in the Al-Washm region of central Saudi Arabia.

Its intriguing history is illuminated in the Arabic book “Glimpses into the History of Marat” by Saudi researcher Abdullah Al-Duwaihi, first published in 2012, yet relevant for those wishing to explore the Kingdom’s history.

Al-Duwaihi painstakingly documents the town’s geography, landmarks, social fabric, governance and centuries-old foundations across about 700 pages. The book also covers Marat’s importance on the Hajj caravan route, its scientific legacy, mosques, sports and culture, archaeological sites and a variety of other facets of society. Accounts from geographers and travelers are included.

taif visit saudi

The book opens with an overview of Marat governorate, situated in Al-Washm, northwest of Riyadh. It borders the governorates of Al-Quway’iyah and Dhurma to the south, Shaqra to the north, Thadiq and Huraymila to the east and Al-Dawadmi to the west.

Administratively affiliated with Riyadh Province, Marat oversees several centers, villages and settlements, enjoying governmental facilities and private institutions that have contributed to its development and population growth.

• When King Abdulaziz traveled from Riyadh to Makkah, one of his first official stops was Marat, where the historic Hijaz Road crossed.

• Iconic natural landmarks in Marat include Ghudair Kumait, a basin where floodwaters accumulate without stagnating.

Iconic natural landmarks profiled in the book include Ghudair Kumait, a basin where floodwaters accumulate without stagnating. It is named after the prominent Jabal Kumait landmark known for its location and form, offering panoramic views of the town. This has led to the popular adage, “Secure Kumait, and you secure Marat,” explains the author.

Along with highlighting Marat’s past, Al-Duwaihi also explores locations such as the ruins of Al-Aroosah and Al-Walidi Well, which was attributed to the Prophet Muhammad’s companion Khalid bin Al-Walid. According to historical accounts, he dug the well during his journey through Marat en route to battle the renegades in Al-Yamama.

Royal history

When King Abdulaziz traveled from Riyadh to Makkah, one of his first official stops was Marat, where the historic Hijaz Road crossed, and where he would stay for several days. Royal tents were set up outside the palace in Marat — built in 1350 AH (1930) — days in advance of his arrival.

As the royal caravan approached, telegrams were sent to prepare for essential supplies. Vehicles and caravans passing through the route would also halt in the town for rest and replenishment, transforming Marat into a bustling commercial hub, especially during the Hajj season, when it teemed with tents, vendors and shoppers lining the roadside.

The book features accounts from various travelers, both foreign and local, who passed through Marat and documented their experiences, including George Forster Sadleir, British explorer Harry Philby, American geologist Thomas C. Barger, Amin Al-Rihani, Youssef Yassin, Ahmed Al-Kadhimi and Atiq Al-Biladi. Yet he overlooked mentioning Ahmad Abdul-Ghafoor Attar, who provided captivating glimpses of the town in the 1960s.

One of the book’s notable features is its exploration of Marat’s architectural heritage, highlighting the coexistence of ancient mud-brick neighborhoods and modern structures. Although the old government palace was demolished due to encroaching modern developments, had it remained, it would have stood as a prominent landmark of the province.

Notable old quarters within Marat’s walls include Bab Al-Naqeeb, Zab’arah, Junaib, Al-Hafsiah, Banban, Hayit Hussain, Al-Shuraiqy, Shari’ah, Subaitah, Qa’rah, Suwail and Al-Naqbah. Outside the walls are Al-Qusaibah, Al-Muraiba’, Al-Ju’di, Bab Al-Naifiah, Qubaibah, Suwaydan, Al-Hulailah, Bab Al-Barr and At-Tuwaila.

According to Al-Duwaihi’s book, Al-Amiriah School was the governorate’s first educational institution, built in 1368 AH (1948). Constructed from traditional mud bricks in Marat’s northeastern quarters, the boys’ elementary school followed design templates set by the Kingdom’s educational authorities at the time.

Later, in 1387 AH (1967), the first school for girls, known as Al-Awwal School, was inaugurated, initially located in the western part of the old town before later relocating to a new governmental premises. Over subsequent years, a series of schools for both boys and girls were progressively opened.
