A journey to Tanzania is a voyage through a land where nature's grandeur unfolds in myriad spectacles. From the towering summit of Mount Kilimanjaro to the vast golden plains of the Serengeti, the landscapes inspire awe and wonder. Beneath the shade of baobab trees, wildlife dramas play out, while the azure waters of Zanzibar beckon with an allure of tropical paradise. Enriching this natural tapestry are the warm Tanzanian people, whose rich cultural heritage and age-old traditions provide a soulful depth to any traveler's experience. At Luxury Holidays Nepal, we craft journeys that delve beyond the surface, ensuring that each moment in Tanzania is one of discovery, luxury, and unforgettable memories.

The Pinnacle: Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro, affectionately referred to as "Kili", isn't just Africa's highest peak—it's a symbol of the intriguing challenge and sheer majesty that Tanzania offers to the world. Rising solitarily from the Tanzanian plains, this dormant volcano beckons adventurers, romantics, and dreamers alike.

A Geological Marvel: Mount Kilimanjaro is unique. It's not part of a mountain range but stands alone, its three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira, pushing the skyline to an impressive 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Although Kili is a dormant volcano, it's not extinct. The last major eruption was about 360,000 years ago, with smaller eruptions having taken place 150,000 and 200 years ago.

Roof of Africa: Standing atop Kilimanjaro provides a vantage point like no other. The mountain's glaciers and the cloud cover below offer a surreal landscape, making climbers feel as though they're on top of the world. This feeling, coupled with the achievement of reaching Africa's highest point, creates a mix of euphoria and profound reflection for many trekkers.

Trekking Routes: Kilimanjaro is accessible to trekkers without mountaineering equipment or experience, making it one of the most approachable high peaks globally. However, the altitude and potential for rapid altitude sickness should never be underestimated. There are several routes to the summit:

  • Marangu Route : Often considered the "easiest", it offers hut accommodations.
  • Machame Route : Popular and scenic, but also challenging.
  • Lemosho and Shira Routes : These begin from the western side and offer longer acclimatization periods.
  • Rongai Route : Approaching from the north, this is a quieter route.
  • Umbwe Route : The most challenging due to its steep ascent.

Biodiversity: Kilimanjaro isn't just about the climb. It's a journey through distinct ecological zones, from rainforest to moorland, alpine desert to the arctic summit. Each zone is home to unique flora and fauna. Blue monkeys, bush babies, and vibrant bird species add life to the lush rainforests, while the upper reaches are characterized by hardy plant species like giant groundsels and lobelias.

Cultural Significance: The Chagga people have lived on Kilimanjaro's slopes for centuries. The mountain has deep spiritual significance for them and is interwoven with their history and folklore. Visiting climbers will find the warmth and stories of the Chagga as enriching as the climb itself.

Luxury Holidays Nepal Experience: At Luxury Holidays Nepal, we believe that Kilimanjaro is more than a trek—it's a journey of the soul. Our curated experiences ensure you don't just climb a mountain, but truly engage with its essence. From expert guides and porters to luxury camp setups, we ensure your Kilimanjaro experience is safe, memorable, and deeply fulfilling.

In the grand tapestry of Tanzania's offerings, Mount Kilimanjaro stands tall, both literally and metaphorically. Its majesty, challenge, and the sheer wonder it evokes make it a pinnacle in every sense of the word.

The Plains: Serengeti National Park

When one thinks of African safaris, the image that most often comes to mind is that of the vast, golden grasslands of the Serengeti, dotted with acacia trees and teeming with wildlife. The Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the epitome of wild Africa and one of the continent's most celebrated ecosystems.

A Tapestry of Life: Covering an area of approximately 14,750 square kilometers, the Serengeti is home to a staggering array of animals. From the famed 'Big Five' – lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo – to cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, impalas, and countless bird species, the park offers unparalleled wildlife viewing opportunities.

The Great Migration: One of nature's most spectacular events, the Great Migration, unfolds in the Serengeti. Over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles move in a cyclical pattern in search of fresh pastures and water. This epic journey, with its river crossings, predator-prey interactions, and calving season, offers riveting drama and is a bucket-list experience for many wildlife enthusiasts.

Landscapes Beyond the Plains: While the endless plains dominate the park's landscape, the Serengeti is also made up of riverine forests, swamps, kopjes (rock formations), and woodlands. Each of these habitats supports specific communities of plants and animals, adding to the park's rich biodiversity.

Cultural Interactions: Adjacent to the Serengeti are the proud Maasai communities. With their vibrant attire, age-old traditions, and harmonious coexistence with the wild, the Maasai offer a cultural dimension to any Serengeti visit. Engaging with them provides insights into their pastoral lifestyle and deep connection with the land.

Conservation Efforts: Serengeti's significance isn't just ecological; it's also a testament to conservation efforts. Anti-poaching units, community outreach programs, and sustainable tourism practices are continually employed to ensure that this wild paradise remains untouched for generations to come.

Luxury Holidays Nepal Experience: In the heart of the Serengeti, Luxury Holidays Nepal crafts an experience that goes beyond the ordinary. From luxury tented camps that echo the grandeur of a bygone era to expert guides who unravel the intricacies of the wild, we ensure that your Serengeti sojourn is immersive and memorable. Customized game drives, bush breakfasts, and balloon safaris are just some of the offerings that elevate your African adventure.

The Serengeti isn't just a national park; it's a feeling, a call of the wild that resonates deep within. Its expansive plains and the pulse of life they hold are a testament to nature's grandeur. With Luxury Holidays Nepal, discover the Serengeti in its full splendor, creating memories that last a lifetime.

Island Magic: Zanzibar

Tanzania's treasures are not confined to its mainland. Off its eastern coast lies Zanzibar, an archipelago that pulses with history, culture, and natural wonders. Often dubbed the "Spice Island" due to its age-old spice trade, Zanzibar is a mosaic of influences, from African to Arab, Portuguese to Persian. With Luxury Holidays Nepal, dive into the magic that is Zanzibar.

Azure and Beyond: Zanzibar's beaches are the stuff of legends. Powdery white sands kiss the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, creating serene stretches perfect for relaxation. Dive beneath the waves, and you'll discover vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. Whether you're snorkeling, diving, or sailing on a traditional dhow, the waters of Zanzibar offer myriad adventures.

Stone Town: A Historical Tapestry: At the heart of Zanzibar is Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking its narrow alleys is like stepping back in time. Majestic palaces, ancient forts, and intricately carved wooden doors tell tales of sultans, traders, and explorers. The town's architecture is a blend of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European elements, reflecting its storied past.

The Spice Legacy: Zanzibar's spice trade dates back centuries, and even today, its spice plantations are a sensory delight. Wander amidst clove, nutmeg, vanilla, and cinnamon trees. Participate in a spice tour, where you can learn about the cultivation and uses of these aromatic treasures, followed by a meal flavored with these very spices.

Cultural Melting Pot: Zanzibar's cultural richness is evident in its festivals, music, dance, and art. The island's Taarab music, a blend of local tunes with Indian and Arabic influences, fills the air, creating a unique soundscape. Festivals like the Zanzibar International Film Festival and the Sauti za Busara Music Festival celebrate the island's artistic spirit.

Wild Wonders: Beyond its cultural and historical sites, Zanzibar is also home to the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, the only national park in Zanzibar. Here, visitors can encounter the rare Red Colobus Monkeys and a variety of other flora and fauna.

Luxury Holidays Nepal Experience: With Luxury Holidays Nepal, your Zanzibar journey is curated for excellence. From luxury beachfront resorts to immersive cultural tours, we ensure that your island experience is both authentic and lavish. Enjoy sundowners on a private dhow cruise, indulge in spa treatments infused with Zanzibari spices, or simply lounge by the pristine beaches. Every moment in Zanzibar with us is tailored to evoke wonder and indulgence.

In the vast canvas of Tanzanian wonders, Zanzibar shines distinctly, offering travelers a harmonious blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. With its magic, it beckons, promising memories that linger long after the journey ends.

The Cradle of Mankind: Ngorongoro Crater

Nestled in the heart of Tanzania lies a geological marvel and a testament to life's ancient beginnings: the Ngorongoro Crater. Often referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World," this vast caldera is not only a spectacle of natural beauty but also an unparalleled sanctuary for wildlife. With Luxury Holidays Nepal, explore the depths and wonders of Ngorongoro, a place where the past and present of our planet coalesce.

A Geological Gem: The Ngorongoro Crater, resulting from a colossal volcanic explosion some two to three million years ago, spans approximately 260 square kilometers. Its sheer walls rise 400 to 610 meters, encircling a unique ecosystem that has remained largely unchanged for millennia.

Wildlife Haven: Perhaps the most dense game-viewing area in Africa, the crater floor is a mosaic of habitats, from forests to lakes, that support a staggering array of wildlife. Lions, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, and leopards (making up the 'Big Five') coexist alongside hippos, flamingos, antelopes, and many others. The crater's natural borders have allowed for a unique evolutionary microcosm, giving visitors an unmatched safari experience.

Footprints of Early Man: Close to Ngorongoro, in the Olduvai Gorge, lies a record of humanity's early stages. Dubbed the "Cradle of Mankind," this site has yielded fossils and tools providing evidence of early hominins, marking significant milestones in our evolutionary journey. A visit here is not just a physical journey, but a contemplative one into our shared past.

Maasai Coexistence: The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is unique in that it integrates the protection of wildlife with the needs of the local Maasai people. These proud pastoralists graze their cattle alongside wild animals, showcasing a harmonious coexistence and a testament to man's potential symbiotic relationship with nature.

Luxury Holidays Nepal Experience: Exploring Ngorongoro with Luxury Holidays Nepal is a dive into nature's grand theatre. Our luxury lodges on the crater rim offer stunning vistas and easy access to the crater floor for safari drives. Expert guides bring the region's history and biodiversity to life, ensuring every moment is rich in discovery. Whether you're witnessing a lion hunt at dawn or exploring the ancient layers of Olduvai Gorge, we ensure your experience is both profound and luxurious.

In Tanzania's vast array of wonders, Ngorongoro stands as a poignant reminder of life's ancient rhythms and the enduring magic of the wild. Journey with us to this cradle, where every moment resonates with the deep pulse of the earth.

Cultural Immersion: Maasai Villages

To truly understand the heart of Tanzania, one must venture beyond its wildlife-rich national parks and pristine beaches to the vibrant communities that have thrived on this land for millennia. Among them, the Maasai people stand out as a beacon of tradition, resilience, and cultural pride. With Luxury Holidays Nepal, immerse yourself in the colors, sounds, and spirit of the Maasai villages for a genuine and transformative Tanzanian experience.

Living Legends: The Maasai, semi-nomadic pastoralists, have roamed the plains of East Africa for centuries. With their tall, slender build and unmistakable bright red shukas (traditional cloths), they are instantly recognizable. Their life revolves around their cattle, which are both a source of sustenance and a symbol of wealth.

Engage in Rituals and Dance: The Maasai are known for their enchanting dance and song rituals, most famously the 'Adumu' or 'jumping dance'. Warriors gather in a circle, taking turns to jump high into the air, showcasing their prowess and strength. Visitors are often invited to join, making it an interactive and joyous experience.

Craftsmanship and Adornments: Maasai beadwork is intricate and colorful, with each design symbolizing different aspects of their culture and beliefs. These adornments are not just decorative but carry deep meanings about one's age, social status, and marital status. Engaging with local artisans offers insights into their craft and even opportunities to purchase these beautiful handmade items.

Traditional Dwellings: A visit to a Maasai village or 'enkang' is incomplete without exploring their traditional dwellings, known as 'manyattas'. Made from mud, sticks, grass, and cow dung, these circular huts offer insights into their simplistic yet efficient way of life.

Safeguarding Nature: Despite the modern world's encroachments, the Maasai maintain a harmonious relationship with nature. Their belief system, which respects all living creatures and their surroundings, offers lessons in sustainability and coexistence.

Luxury Holidays Nepal Experience: At Luxury Holidays Nepal, we believe that travel should be a conduit for genuine cultural exchange. Our guided tours to Maasai villages prioritize respect, mutual understanding, and immersive learning. With us, you won't just witness the Maasai way of life; you'll live it—even if just for a day. From sharing a meal to storytelling sessions by the fire, every moment is curated to bridge worlds and create lasting memories.

Embarking on a journey to the Maasai villages is not just a cultural detour but a deep dive into the soul of Tanzania. With Luxury Holidays Nepal, experience the authentic pulse of East Africa, echoing in the rhythms of Maasai song and dance.

Visa to Visit Tanzania: A Guide by Luxury Holidays Nepal

When planning a dream trip to Tanzania, understanding the visa requirements is essential to ensure a smooth and hassle-free entry. Here's a concise guide to assist you in navigating the visa process for Tanzania.

Who Requires a Visa?

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Tanzania. However, there are exceptions for some countries from the East African and Southern African regions. It's crucial to check the specific requirements for your nationality.

Types of Visas:

Tourist Visa: This is the most common visa for travelers wishing to explore Tanzania for tourism purposes. It's valid for a single entry and typically allows stays of up to 90 days.

Business Visa: For individuals intending to conduct short-term business, participate in trade fairs, or attend business meetings in Tanzania.

Transit Visa: For travelers passing through Tanzania en route to another destination.

Multiple Entry Visa: Suitable for those needing to enter the country multiple times over a year, often for business purposes.

How to Apply:

Visa on Arrival: Citizens of many countries can obtain a visa upon landing at major entry points like Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam) or Kilimanjaro International Airport. This process can sometimes involve waiting in queues.

E-Visa: Tanzania has introduced an e-Visa system where applicants can apply and pay online. After approval, the e-visa is emailed to the applicant, which needs to be printed and shown upon arrival.

Through Tanzanian Diplomatic Missions: You can apply for a visa at Tanzanian embassies or consulates in your country. This is often the preferred method for those who want to sort out visa formalities before traveling.

Documents Typically Required:

  • Passport with at least six months' validity from the date of entry.
  • Passport-sized photographs.
  • Completed visa application form.
  • Visa fee (amount varies based on nationality and type of visa).
  • Return or onward flight ticket.
  • Proof of accommodation or travel itinerary.
  • For business visas: An invitation letter or business contacts in Tanzania.

Visa Fees: Visa fees can vary based on your nationality and the type of visa. As of the last update, the fee for most single-entry tourist visas is $50, though U.S. citizens pay $100. Always check the official Tanzanian immigration website or consult with your local embassy for the most recent fees.

Special Note for Zanzibar: Zanzibar is part of the United Republic of Tanzania. If you've obtained a visa for mainland Tanzania, it is also valid for Zanzibar. However, upon entering Zanzibar, you'll undergo another immigration check.

Luxury Holidays Nepal's Added Value: When you book a Tanzanian experience with Luxury Holidays Nepal, our team provides guidance on the visa process, ensuring you're well-prepared for your journey.

While the visa process is generally straightforward, it's always advisable to begin the process early and be equipped with all necessary documents. This ensures that your Tanzanian adventure starts without a hitch, letting you focus on the wonders awaiting you in this East African gem.

Tanzania - Travel Safety: A Comprehensive Guide by Luxury Holidays Nepal

Tanzania, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and rich cultural heritage, is a bucket-list destination for many travelers. As with any international travel, understanding the safety landscape is crucial for a stress-free experience. Here's a safety guide for those planning to immerse themselves in the wonders of Tanzania.

General Safety:

Crime: Tanzania is generally safe for tourists. However, as in many destinations worldwide, petty crimes like pickpocketing or bag snatching can occur, especially in crowded places. Always be aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings secure.

Travel in Groups: Especially after dark, it's advisable to travel in groups and stick to well-lit areas. Avoid isolated areas or beaches at night.

Local Customs: Respect local traditions and customs. Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or rural areas.

Health Safety:

Vaccinations: Consult your doctor before traveling to Tanzania. Recommended vaccinations often include yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis A and B, and rabies.

Malaria: Malaria is prevalent. Consider taking malaria prophylactics, use mosquito nets, and wear repellent.

Water: Drink bottled or boiled water. Avoid tap water and ice in drinks.

Food: Stick to well-cooked meals. Avoid street food or raw foods in places where hygiene might be questionable.

Wildlife and Safari Safety:

Listen to Guides: Always follow the instructions of your safari guides. They are trained to understand animal behavior and ensure your safety.

Stay in the Vehicle: Unless told otherwise, remain in the safari vehicle, especially when near wild animals.

No Flash Photography: Flash can provoke animals. Avoid using it.

Camp Safety: When staying in safari camps or lodges, adhere to safety guidelines, especially at night when wild animals might roam.

Transport Safety:

Road Travel: Drive during daylight hours, as roads might not be well-lit at night. Be cautious, as local driving styles can differ from what you're used to.

Dala-Dalas: These are local minibusses and can often be overcrowded and poorly maintained. If using them, be conscious of pickpocketing.

Ferry Safety: If traveling to places like Zanzibar by ferry, ensure the ferry isn't overcrowded and that you're aware of emergency procedures.

Emergency Numbers:

  • Police: 112 or 999
  • Fire: 112 or 999
  • Ambulance: 112 or 999

Always have the contact information of your country's embassy or consulate in Tanzania.

Best Time to Visit Tanzania: An Insight by Luxury Holidays Nepal

Tanzania, with its vast landscapes, diverse wildlife, and pristine beaches, is a destination that promises unique experiences throughout the year. However, understanding the country's climatic patterns can help travelers optimize their visit. Here's a guide to the best times to explore this East African gem.

Tanzania's Two Main Seasons:

Dry Season (June to October):

  • Weather: Clear skies, fewer mosquitoes, and moderate temperatures.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Animals tend to congregate around water sources, making this an ideal time for safaris. The renowned Great Migration in the Serengeti, where massive herds of wildebeest and zebras move in search of greener pastures, reaches its peak between June and August.
  • Tourist Volumes: July and August see the highest number of tourists due to the migration and summer holidays.
  • Recommendation: A prime time for safaris and outdoor activities.

Wet Season (November to May):

  • Short Rains (November to December): Intermittent showers, usually in the afternoon. The landscape becomes lush and green.
  • Long Rains (March to May): Heavier and more consistent rainfall. Some lodges in remote areas might close due to accessibility issues.
  • Wildlife: Bird-watching is at its best with migratory birds present. While wildlife is more dispersed due to abundant water sources, lush landscapes and fewer crowds offer a different kind of safari experience.
  • Coastal Weather: Warmer with occasional rain. Zanzibar and other islands are ideal for relaxation, especially between January and February.
  • Recommendation: Great for budget travelers due to fewer tourists and off-peak pricing, and for those looking to experience a different, verdant side of Tanzania.

Special Considerations:

Mount Kilimanjaro: While it's possible to climb Kilimanjaro year-round, the best months are during the dry periods: January to March and June to October.

Cultural Visits: If you're interested in cultural tourism, such as visiting the Maasai villages or exploring the historic sites of Zanzibar, the dry months offer more comfortable travel conditions.

Beach Holidays: December to March are the warmest months ideal for beach holidays, especially in Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia islands. However, be cautious of the rainy season from March to May.

Luxury Holidays Nepal's Expertise: While these are general guidelines, every traveler's preferences and interests are unique. At Luxury Holidays Nepal, we use our extensive local knowledge to tailor experiences based on your desires, ensuring that your Tanzanian adventure aligns with your expectations and the seasonal offerings of the country.

Tanzania's allure spans throughout the year, and each season provides its own charm. Whether it's the drama of the Great Migration, the serenity of a rain-kissed landscape, or the thrill of summiting Kilimanjaro, Tanzania promises memories that last a lifetime. Decide on your priorities, pack accordingly, and let the magic of Tanzania embrace you.

Welcome to Tanzania

Wherever you go in Tanzania, opportunities abound for getting to know the county's people and cultures with once-in-a-lifetime moments.

A picnic lunch in ngorongoro crater, game drives and a picnic in africa's original "garden of eden".

Believed by many to have been Africa's original "Garden of Eden," Ngorongoro Crater ranks among the world's largest calderas, and contains one of the oldest and most diverse ecosystems on Earth. Within this dormant volcano's walls lie short grasslands, swamps, forests and a freshwater lake – all of which inspire a continuous parade of migrating wildlife. You'll not only embark on a game drive in this "lost world," but a private picnic lunch inside the crater will be a highlight of your trip.

Meet the Maasai people

Learn the ways of the maasai at a traditional boma.

A highlight of your family's Tanzania safari is your visit to a Maasai boma – a nomadic village preserving traditonal Maasai cultural customs, consisting of small huts made of mud and cow dung for sleeping and cooking. Can you picture living here with your family? During your visit, Maasai villagers will demonstrate their spear-throwing, bow-and-arrow and other traditional skills. You'll also have an opportunity to visit a local primary school to talk with the children and their teacher.

Stories almost as old as the Earth itself await you in Tanzania

Gliding in a hot air balloon high above the vast plains of the Serengeti, observing the "circle of life" below… a picnic lunch in the wildlife treasure-trove that is Ngorongoro Crater, a volcanic caldera that some believe may have been the "Garden of Eden"… a visit to Oldupai Gorge, home to some of the earliest evidence of humans on Earth… Tauck experiences revealing the essence of Tanzania…

Follow the migration in a mobile camp

Our first moving safari's mobile camp follows migrating wildlife.

Every year, over a million wildebeest and more than 200,000 zebras make a trek across Tanzania from the southern reaches of Serengeti National Park to the Masai Mara National Reserve and back again, instinctively driven to constantly search for food and water. On Tauck's first "moving safari," follow this "Great Migration" with a three-night stay in tented accommodations at Legendary Serengeti Mobile Camp – moving with the wildlife as they traverse the heart of Serengeti National Park, and heading out on game drives each morning and afternoon.

Private game drives throughout your trip

Set off on private game drives on specially built safari vehicles.

Hop aboard your specially built safari vehicle and make tracks on a daily game drive (or two) across the classic African savannah stretching out before you... in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, and in Kenya's Amboseli National Park and Masai Mara Reserve. Guiding you on your treks in search of the "Big Five" and other iconic wildlife are our expert drivers, trackers, rangers, and Tauck Directors... all highly experienced and eager to share their knowledge while keeping everyone engaged, safe and sound on the adventure of a lifetime!

Tanzania safari highlights

A giraffe standing in the grassy plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania

Find the Big Five

Jump into a specially designed safari vehicle and journey deep into the vast, grassy plains of the Serengeti to search for the Big Five (the lion, the leopard, the bush elephant, the Cape buffalo and the rhino). The animals are active at different times of the day, which is why we head out on four game drives – two in the early morning and two in the late afternoon – for the best chance of spotting Africa's most iconic wildlife.

A dazzle of zebras in Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

Explore Ngorongoro Crater

At 20 kilometres wide and 600 metres deep, the scenes of Ngorongoro Crater's craggy volcanic peaks and lush grasslands are almost as impressive as the 30,000 animals that call it home. Traverse the crater floor in an open-roof 4WD to track down large game and smaller critters. If you're lucky, you might see lions, leopards, elephants and hippos. And if you're really lucky, maybe even an endangered black rhino.

A local shepherd from the Masai community in Tanzania

Meet local communities

You might come for the Big Five, but you'll stay for the culture and hospitality. Home to over 120 tribes, the little town of Mto wa Mbu is home to diverse cultures, languages and customs. Visit a local community to learn about traditional ways of life, sample banana beer, meet some local craftspeople and share a homecooked meal with a family in their home. This is the Tanzania most travellers don't see.

Two cyclists posing for a photo in the Serengeti, Tanzania

Cycle alongside antelope

Swap four wheels for two on an epic cycling-come-safari adventure through some of Tanzania's lesser-known landscapes. From cycling in the shadow of Mount Meru to whooshing past wildebeest and millions of flamingoes in Lake Manyara, cycling allows you to go where cars can't and immerse yourself in the wildness and beauty of the African bush at a slower pace.

When's the best time to go on safari in Tanzania?

The best time to go on safari in Tanzania is generally during the dry season from June to October. The drier weather makes it easier to track wildlife as vegetation is thinner and higher concentrations of game congregate around permanent waterholes. Tanzania has two rainy seasons – the 'long rains' from April to May and the 'short rains' from November to December. The long rains bring high humidity and tropical downpours while the short rains see brief showers. Despite the rain and the thicker vegetation which can make it more difficult to spot wildlife, it's usually less crowded, everything lush and green, and there are more baby animals around.

If you visit between May and September, you may get to experience the annual Great Migration (there's no way to predict when it'll happen, but it's usually within these months). This epic natural phenomenon sees millions of wildebeest (often mixed with herds of zebra and antelope – followed by hungry lions!) travel across the Serengeti in search of water as the dry season sets in. As you can imagine, this is the experience of a lifetime.

Am I guaranteed to see animals?

We can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, but you’d have to be seriously unlucky to see no animals at all. On our safaris, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of species and your expert driver and local leader will be on hand to point you in the right direction (literally).

What are the "Big Five"?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for a safari in Tanzania?

Loose, light layers in neutral colours are the best attire for a safari (dark colours will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our  ultimate Africa packing guide .

What type of food will be served on safari in Tanzania?

It depends on the trip style you've chosen. On our Basix trips, you’ll have a cook travelling with you who'll whip up a variety of local and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there'll be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. One thing's for sure: you definitely won't be going hungry on safari!

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have private bathrooms with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Will I be able to use my mobile phone on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however, internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t think twice about emails and social media when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

Are Intrepid's Tanzania safaris accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. Please see our  accessible travel page  for more information.

I've visited 93 countries, 57 of them with kids. These 5 underrated spots are great places to enjoy with your family.

  • Karen Edwards has traveled to 93 countries, and 57 of them have been with her young children.
  • Edwards said that her family has had more fun exploring underrated spots than the popular ones.
  • Her favorites include Tanzania for its safari tours and Abu Dhabi for its vibrant festival scene.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Karen Edwards , who blogs about her family's travels around the world. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

Since 2000, I've visited 93 countries and 57 of them have been with my four children who are all under the age of 10.

I am a nurse by background, but I have been blogging about traveling with my husband and kids since 2014. I cover a lot of off-the-beaten-track destinations and write itineraries for places I've been to, explaining how they work for families with children.

Many popular family destinations tend to be overcrowded. They're usually the ones that get a lot of media exposure or are shown in viral videos on social media. In America, it'd be places like Disneyland in California or Disney World in Florida, while for Europeans, it might be some of the Spanish resort areas.

Although my family and I have visited these places, we have always come away disappointed. They often lack educational experiences, feeling like pointless affairs.

I think traveling to underrated spots makes trips feel more exclusive and you can learn more about the cultures of the countries you visit — it also keeps you away from tourist traps.

We went on a safari tour in Tanzania

Our family visited Tanzania in 2019 in collaboration with a tourism brand. We were there for 12 days.

Our flights to the country were kind of expensive; we paid about $9,000 for our then-family of four, including a stop in Zanzibar at the end of the trip for a few days. However, overall, the entire trip didn't end up costing us that much.

We had some really unique experiences in Tanzania. We went to Mto Wa Mbu village , which is beneath a banana plantation, and we went on a safari tour in its Lake Manyara National Park .

Interestingly, Tanzania is one of the few places in the world where lions are known to climb trees. I remember seeing them sit in tall trees; it was quite unusual, but my kids really enjoyed how close they were to the animals.

Throughout our trip, we actually felt like we were experiencing life in Tanzania. Our campsite was on a river's edge in the depths of nature. It was nice not to feel surrounded by tourists.

My kids fell in love with Abu Dhabi's culture

Many people mistakenly believe that Dubai is a country, but in reality, it's a city in the United Arab Emirates, with Abu Dhabi being its capital.

My family and I moved to Abu Dhabi in 2021 and lived there for 18 months. The city does have a lot of similarities to glitzy and glam Dubai , but you get a more down-to-earth experience.

There are amazing festivals in Abu Dhabi where they display their culture in different formats, whether that be through local food or crafts. It does feel authentic because it's usually mainly locals participating and organizing them.

The city is also 1.5 hours away from Al Ain, which sits at the foot of  Jebel Hafeet , one of the tallest mountains in the region. Along the way up, you'll find many ancient artifacts, such as beehive huts, which have been there for thousands of years. At the top, you can watch incredible sunsets.

Related stories

The city also has the Al Ain Oasis , which uses an ancient irrigation system. It has these beautiful paved pathways that look like cobbled streets.

My kids loved Abu Dhabi and are constantly asking me to go back — they really liked all the cultural celebrations.

We love Sri Lanka so much, we're building a villa there

In 2022, my family and I moved to Sri Lanka from Abu Dhabi. We thought we'd have more family time here, and it was going to be an affordable place to live.

We're building a family-friendly villa here that should be completed by August. The area where we are building has a lot of nice cafes, bars, and restaurants nearby.

Overall, Sri Lanka is an amazing country that has so many diverse experiences. There are tea plantations, mountains, and beaches. As for wildlife, their national parks have loads of elephants and leopards.

On one occasion, we went on a safari boat tour to an isolated national park where we watched elephants swim across a lake and onto a tiny island. It was amazing.

The beaches in Sri Lanka are pristine. They have beautiful scenery with swaying coconut palm trees, clear water, and perfect waves. Our favorite is Kabalana Beach .

Because we're always on the beach, my children have learned how to surf. I think it's the most fun thing that we do on the weekends as a family.

The ski resorts and spas are amazing in Andorra

We visited Andorra in 2018 for about six days. It's a tiny country nestled in the Pyrenees between Spain. It's a two-hour drive from Barcelona and three hours from Toulouse, France.

The city has a unique fusion of cultures, though I think Catalonian is the strongest influence. During our trip, my family and I toured many ancient churches.

We also went to some amazing spas and resorts in Andorra. The hotel and ski system there is really family-friendly.

During our visit to the Grandvalira ski resort , my daughter learned how to ski and my husband got to snowboard — the resort has a kindergarten at the foot of its mountain, where kids can play or ski.

Andorra also has amazing spa facilities that are suitable for families and are sectioned off for different age groups.

Our trip was in collaboration with Andorra's tourism board, but I feel like it wasn't overly expensive in comparison to some other places around the world.

I was treated like family in Macedonia

Macedonia is a Balkan country just north of Greece. I haven't been there with children, but I wouldn't have any issues taking my kids there.

It has many beautiful small villages and it's great for skiing too.

The country is also home to one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe named Lake Orchid, which borders Albania. There's this beautiful, small village on the lake that has charming restaurant and a lovely atmosphere for relaxing and enjoying good food.

I visited the country in 2008, and then again in 2012 with my then-boyfriend and now-husband.

The first time I visited, I went with two girlfriends, and we were backpackers. We arrived in the middle of the night by bus and had no idea what we were doing. The bus driver just made a call, and a stranger came and picked us up in his car — I thought I was going to die.

The opposite happened. He took us back to his home with his family, and we stayed there with them for a few days. We ended up extending the trip because he and his family were so amazing.

They didn't speak a word of English, and we couldn't speak a word of their language either. We'd just gesture at each other, and they'd give us food and red wine.

I just totally fell in love with them and their country.

West Indies cricketers in Nepal

  • West Indies tour Nepal for the first time in the history of the sport
  • A West Indies A side, led by Roston Chase, will play 5 T20s in Kirtipur
  • West Indies players were seen loading their own luggage into a mini truck upon arrival

Zimbabwe cricketer Sikandar Raza slammed a section of fans on social media who were judgemental about the reception that West Indies cricket players received upon their arrival in Nepal for a 5-match T20 series. A video of the luggage of West Indies players being loaded in a mini-truck went viral on social media on Thursday and quite a few took a dig at Nepal for not arranging better facilities for the touring team.

Sikandar Raza said he is fully confident that Nepal would prove to be great hosts and that West Indies players are not going to complain about anything during their stay in the Asian country. The video shows the players, accustomed to a certain standard of treatment as professional athletes, walking up to the modest vehicle waiting to transport their gear.

Can guarantee that Nepal will give them the best treatment possible within their means and rightly so and can also guarantee that none of the Carribean boys will see this as a problem or a hassle https://t.co/6OzD9qyxI1 — Sikandar Raza (@SRazaB24) April 25, 2024

It was a momentous occasion for Nepal cricket as West Indies, once powerhouses of world cricket, were visiting Nepal for the first time in the history of the sport. Roston Chase, who is in the mix for the T20 World Cup, will the West Indies A team in their 5-match T20 series against Nepal's senior men's team.

The West Indies A team comprises promising T20 talents like Hayden Walsh, Keemo Paul, and Keacy Carty, alongside seasoned pace bowlers Obed McCoy and Oshane Thomas. The tour holds significant importance as it serves as another phase in preparation leading up to the T20 World Cup, starting June 1 in the USA and the West Indies.

“I am confident this Nepal tour marks a crucial step forward in our preparatory phase for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. It presents an invaluable opportunity to get our players who are not in the IPL back on the park playing competitive T20 cricket as well as provides the chance for us to expose a few emerging prospects," Desmond Haynes, West Indies' selection committee chief said earlier in the week.
