Egypt Safari Tours & Holidays

Egypt, a country linking northeast Africa with the Middle East, dates to the time of the pharaohs. Millennia-old monuments sit along the fertile Nile River Valley, including Giza’s colossal Pyramids and Great Sphinx as well as Luxor’s hieroglyph-lined Karnak Temple and Valley of the King’s tombs. The capital, Cairo, is home to Ottoman landmarks like Muhammad Ali Mosque and the Egyptian Museum, a trove of antiquities.

An Egyptian vacation is always full of excitement for every member of the family in 2021. At the heart of Egypt’s cultural identity is Cairo, a cosmopolitan capital where historic churches, mosques and museums rub shoulders with luxury hotels and gourmet restaurants.

How to get to Egypt

Cairo International Airport is the principal international airport of Cairo and the busiest airport in Egypt and serves as the primary hub for EgyptAir and Nile Air as well as several other airlines such as.

Passport, Visa and Entry requirements for  Egypt

To enter Egypt, a passport valid for at least six months from the date of issue of the visa is required by all nationals referred to in the chart above.

Citizens can obtain a renewable single-entry 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Egyptian airports for a 25 USD fee. A multiple entry visa is also obtainable for 60 USD.

The health sector of Egypt

Egypt has a highly pluralistic health care system, with many different public and private providers and financing agents. Health services in Egypt are currently managed, financed, and provided by agencies in all three sectors of the economy—government, parasternal, and private. But this does not cover foreign travellers so ensure you purchase travel and medical insurance before travelling to Egypt.

Malaria and Yellow fever vaccination for  Egypt

Travellers who do not have proof of vaccination will be quarantined for up to 6 days. The vaccination requirement is imposed by this country for protection against Yellow Fever since the principal mosquito vector Aedes aegypti is present in its territory.

Egypt had eliminated malaria, and until now, the last locally transmitted case was in 1998.

Currency of  Egypt

The official currency in EGYPT is the Egyptian Pound (EGP), 1 Euro = about 8.5 EGP and 1 Us dollar = about 5.8 EGP. Foreign currency, traveller’s cheques and Euro cheques can be exchanged at the airport upon arrival, as well as in all major banks. Major credit cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants, shops etc.

Official Language of  Egypt

The official language of Egypt is Arabic, and most Egyptians speak one of several vernacular dialects of that language. As is the case in other Arab countries, the spoken vernacular differs greatly from the literary language.

Best time to travel to Egypt

The best time to visit Egypt is between October and April, when temperatures are cooler, but still pleasantly warm across the country. This makes exploring the busy streets of Cairo, visiting the Pyramids in the desert, and exploring ancient Pharaonic tombs more comfortable and enjoyable.

What to wear in Egypt

Avoid tight-fitting clothing, clothing that is too revealing (esp cleavage), and shorts. Short sleeve t-shirts are fine. Skinny jeans are ok as well as you will see many Egyptian women wearing these.

What to bring while travelling to Egypt

Egypt is a hot country so while travelling to Egypt ensure you pack wise while travelling to Egypt.

  • Shorts or short skirts as you see fit (covering the knee, if possible)
  • A couple of T-shirts.
  • At least one shirt, blouse or smart looking top.
  • One pair of long trousers.
  • A veil/shawl (women only; you can buy it at most souvenir shops as well)
  • Swimsuit or bathing suit.

Car hire and driving in   Egypt

None of the big companies allows vehicles to be taken outside Egypt. In some areas outside of Cairo and main cities, tourists may be required to drive in a security convoy that leaves several times a day. so we don’t recommend self-drive in Egypt.

Accommodation in Egypt

Present-day Cairo is located near the Nile River, it has long been settled. In the 4th century, for example, Romans built a fortress town on the banks of the river called Babylon. In 641, Muslims took control of the area and moved its capital from Alexandria to the new, growing city of Cairo. There are plenty of accommodation facilities but outside Cairo, advance booking is required before travelling.

Local food of  Egypt

Egyptian cuisine is characterized by dishes such as full medames, mashed fava beans; kushari, a mixture of lentils, rice, pasta, and other ingredients; molokhiya, chopped and cooked bush okra with garlic and coriander sauce; and feteer meshaltet.

Tipping while Travelling in Egypt

The word ‘baksheesh’ can refer to a tip or a bribe and it is a word you are likely to hear when travelling around Egypt as tipping is a natural part of daily life. You’re likely to have a tip requested from you by anyone who has provided a service including the usual, waiters and drivers, to the less expected, including security guards at some tourist sites. As a guide, it’s customary to tip restaurant staff with 10% of the bill (assuming a service charge has not already been added though this goes to the restaurant and not to the waiter), the housekeeping staff at hotels around USD $5 per day, taxi drivers around $5 and cruise staff $20 per day to be divided between the on-board crew. When delivering your baksheesh, fold the notes in your hands and pass the money in the form of a handshake.

Further information for Egypt

  • Do respect the monuments archaeological sites are human heritage don’t touch scratch or sit on them.
  • Do dress correctly whilst there is no specific dress code in the cities, women will feel more comfortable if they do not wear shorts or have their shoulders uncovered.

Safety of Egypt

The incidence of crime, violent or otherwise, in Egypt is negligible compared with many Western countries, and you’re generally safe walking around day or night. There has been a spike in petty crime since 2011, though it is statistically still quite rare for tourists to become involved and is easily avoided.

Reasons to Choose Egypt and Africa Tours...

Breathtaking Egypt and Africa Tours

Egypt and Africa Tours

If you are serious about having an adventure of a lifetime, then our Egypt and Africa Tours might just be the sort of trip you have been dreaming about; the sort of travel adventures that dreams are made of. From the ancient pyramids, temples and tombs of Egypt, to the vast unspoiled wilderness of countries like Kenya and Tanzania, our Egypt and Africa tours are all you could ever want them to be, and more.

Busting the Myth

One of the greatest myths of all is that Africa is dangerous. In reality however, Africa, as a continent, is no more dangerous than any other continent. Yes, just like with other continents, Africa also has places which are dangerous, and places which tourists should rather avoid visiting, but you will never find any such places featured in our Egypt and Africa itineraries. The African countries that you will see being featured in our Egypt and Africa tours attract millions of visitors every year, and this simply would not be the case if these countries were dangerous.

Why You Should Book a Trip to Kenya

When people think of Kenya, they almost exclusively think about the country’s vast amount of wildlife. After all, nature reserves such as the Maasai Mara National Park are globally famous. This national park in particular, is known all around the world for its huge population of lions, leopards and cheetahs, although it is of course home to millions of other wild animals, and especially from June to October.

Every year in June, millions of animals such as wildebeests; zebras and gazelles migrate from the plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania to the plains of Maasai Mara, an event known as the Big Migration. For anyone who wants to witness this spectacular phenomenon, there is no better place to do so than the Maasai Mara National Park. You can also witness the Big Migration in October when the animals once again return to the plains of Serengeti.

All of our Egypt and Africa tours that feature Kenya include spending some time at the Maasai Mara National Park, as well as at one or more other national parks as well. In short, your time in Kenya will be all about seeing the country’s wildlife, and you will be doing so in comfort and style.

Why Travel to Tanzania

Like Kenya, Tanzania is world famous for its wildlife and wilderness area. In fact, Tanzania is home to one of the world’s most famous nature reserves: the Serengeti National Park. It is almost impossible to visit this reserve without seeing Africa’s Big 5: lions, leopards; elephants, rhinoceroses and Cape wildebeests. There are also many other nature reserves in Tanzania, including places such as the Kilimanjaro National Park for example. Tanzania is very serious about conservation. Roughly 38% of the country’s land area is protected for conservation purposes.

Another great reason to visit Tanzania is because it is also home to Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro.  And, if you get bored with safaris, then there are also many other fascinating attractions to see in the country, including two small islands. However, our existing Egypt and Africa tours that feature Tanzania are geared primarily for people who want to experience the African wilderness and the animals which have made it so famous.

Of course, we also offer customized Egypt and Africa tours, meaning that any one of our existing tours can be customized according to your own individual needs and requirements. Alternatively, our team of travel specialists can work with you to create you very own tour itinerary from scratch. Just tell us where you want to go and what you want to see, and then we will build a unique itinerary based on what you have asked for. After all, it is your vacation, and we want it to be a vacation you will never be able to forget.

Why Travel to Egypt

There are many reasons why people choose to visit Egypt, and also many reasons why so many people visit time and time again. Egypt is undeniably one of the world’s most fascinating countries to visit, thanks to the fact that it is home to an almost infinite number of ancient artifacts and monument, including the world’s most iconic ancient monuments, the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx.

Millions of people also visit Egypt to experience the magic of a Nile River cruise, and if you travel to Egypt with us, you won’t be going on just any Nile cruise; you will be going on a 5-Star Nile River cruise, and there will even be one of our Expert tour guides aboard the ship to escort you are on all the different excursion you will be enjoying along the way.

In addition to its countless ancient Egyptian monuments, Egypt’s Red Sea coast is extremely popular among people who simply want to enjoy a relaxing break in the sun, surrounded by pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. The Egyptian Red Sea coastline is also home to some of the world’s very best dive sites, attracting thousands and thousands of SCUBA divers and snorkelers from around the world. The bottom line is that there really is so much to see and do in the country, regardless of your age, and regardless of whether you are traveling alone or with friends or family.

What to Expect When Booking Our Combination Africa and Egypt Tours

Our existing travel itineraries all begin in Cairo, the lively Egyptian capital. On arrival at the airport in Cairo, your trip manager and a driver meet you and they will transfer you to the hotel where you will be staying for the duration of your stay in Cairo. We always book our clients into good 4 or 5 star hotels to ensure that their stay is as comfortable and as pleasant as possible.

Nearly all of our itineraries include either two or three nights in Cairo. During you time in Cairo, your Expert guide and a driver will take you to see and explore some of the best attractions in and around Cairo. Sightseeing in Cairo always begins with a visit to the ancient Giza necropolis to see Egypt’s legendary pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple.

We also take you to see the amazing Egyptian Museum and the immensely popular Khan el Khalili Bazaar which is located in a part of the city known as Islamic Cairo. Depending on which one of our trips you book, you also be taken to see the famous Step Pyramid which was built for Pharaoh Djoser. Located just a short drive from Cairo, and close to the ancient Egyptian capital of the Old Kingdom, the Step Pyramid was the very first pyramid ever built by the ancient Egyptians.

Lunches at good local restaurants during Cairo excursions are included in most of our travel itineraries. After the Cairo phase of your trip, we then fly you to Luxor or Aswan for your magical 5-Star Nile cruise. Your trip along the Nile is as much about sightseeing as it is about leisure and relaxation. You can be sure that your guide will be taking you to see some of the country’s best ancient Egyptian monuments.

Some of the places you can look forward to seeing will be the Valley of Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Luxor Temple and Karnak. All of these ancient marvels are located near modern-day Luxor. During your trip along the river you will also visit Egypt’s best-preserved ancient temple at Edfu, and also the ancient temple of Sobek and Horus at Kom Ombo, as well as the ancient Temple of Philae at Aswan.

When your sailing on the Nile comes to an end, you will then travel back to Cairo where you will spend one more night before flying out of Egypt.

Once you leave the Land of the Pharaohs the general theme of your trip will all depend on which country you travel to next. If your next destination is Kenya or Tanzania, then almost your entire trip will now be devoted to game spotting drives. These will take place in some of the world’s best and most famous nature reserves, including the Masai Mara National Park in Kenya and the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

If, on the other hand, your trip takes you to Morocco or Dubai, most of your time will be spent sightseeing by way of professionally guided tours, most of which are city tours. Regardless of which one of our travel packages you book, you will enjoy the same high quality and the same excellent level of customer service throughout your trip. You will always have an experienced guide with you; you will always be staying in excellent hotels, and your transport during transfers and sightseeing trips will be clean, modern, and air-conditioned.

Nile River Cruising

The most romantic way to visit egypt is on a cruise down the fabled river nile..

A rite of passage for travellers, following in the footsteps of early explorers, there is no better way to explore the famous sites of Egypt than by river cruiser. The Nile has been the centre of life within Egypt for millennia and, as a result, many of the country’s greatest treasures lie within a few kilometres of its banks. Floating slowly down the Nile (or up from Luxor to Aswan) you will pass timeless landscapes of picturesque villages, farmers riding on donkeys and fishermen hauling in their catch.  Ancient temples stand on the riverbank and you will go ashore with a guide to visit them, as well as exploring tombs and other monuments.

We recommend a minimum 4 night cruise, allowing plenty of time to see the sites, relax on-board and just enjoy the scenery.

The first (and sometimes second night depending on the length of the cruise) is spent on-board in Luxor. The city has a wealth of incredible temples and sites to explore and is often known as the world’s “greatest open air museum”. The East Bank is home to the legendary temples of Luxor and Karnak whilst across the river on the West Bank lies the famous Theban Necropolis (city of the dead) – The Valley of the Kings. The valley is the ancient burial site of pharaohs, queens and nobles of the New Kingdom between 1539and 1075 BC.

Other sites enroute to Aswan include the Temple of Edfu and the Temple of Kom Ombo. The last two nights are usually spent in Aswan. The city boasts a plethora of ancient and fascinating sites including Philae Temple on Agilkia Island and the Unfinished Obelisk.

For avid cruise enthusiasts there are a handful of longer cruises between Cairo and Aswan of up to 14 nights in length. These cruises are for travellers that enjoy sitting peacefully on-board and are content to watch the world pass by. Some itineraries have one or perhaps two days without a scheduled stop. However, a benefit to these departures are visits to some lesser known (or less visited) sites such as beautiful Dendra Temple, The Temple of Seti I (also known as the Great Temple of Abydos), Tuna El Gebel – the ancient Necropolis at Hermopolis – and Beni Hassan, another ancient cemetery.

The best way to finish a Nile cruise itinerary is with a short flight to Abu Simbel , site of the Great Temple of Ramses II, one of the most famous and beautiful temples in Egypt. Built by Ramses in 1300 BC, the temple was carefully moved in 1968 due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

Feluccas on the Nile in Aswan

When to go?

  • One of the best way to discover Egypt’s tombs and temples
  • Follow in the footsteps of early explorers
  • Luxor – home to the Valley of the Kings and Tutankhamun’s tomb
  • Relax onboard as you sail slowly down the Nile passing ancient landscapes
  • Picturesque Aswan and the islands temple of Philae

When is the best time to go to Egypt

The beauty about Egypt is that it’s a year-round destination – particularly for anyone that loves hot, sunny days. The cooler months between October and April are more popular whilst May to September can be very very hot. If you wish to travel during the cooler months, but avoid the peak crowds, then February and March are the best times to visit. The Christmas and New Year period is often the busiest time in Egypt.

About Egypt

Egypt is the gift of the Nile, a river that created a narrow fertile strip of land 600 miles long in an unforgiving desert. From the Nile’s banks, ancient Egypt, and its colossal achievements, arose. From the Great Pyramids of Giza, Valley of the Kings, and numerous temples dedicated to the ancient Egyptian’s gods and goddesses, this a country of undiminished monumentality.

Cairo is the gateway to the country’s historic treasures. The Great Pyramids, as well as the Sphinx and Sakkara pyramid complex, are located across the Nile in Giza. Both Cairo and Giza have world-class museums. Heading upriver, the temples of Luxor and Karnak dominate the skyline of Luxor. On the city’s West Bank lies some of the New Kingdom’s most renowned sites, including the Valley of Kings. Further downriver at the Nile’s First Cataract is the city of Aswan, a center of Nubian culture. It’s the location of the Philae Temple Complex, as well as the gateway to the temples and tombs further south (including Abu Simbel).

The best way to travel between these two cities of Upper Egypt is aboard a Nile Cruise. Several vessels are comparable in their luxuriousness and intimacy as safari camps and lodges. As well as travelling in comfort, a cruise allows guests to visit additional temple sites in between Luxor and Aswan.

From the minute you step of the plane in Egypt you will have 24 hour support throughout your adventure. Emma, who runs these rides and is from the UK, has been living, travelling and working there for over 10 years and knows the country inside out. The main tourist areas are no more dangerous than popular places you might visit in the US or Europe.

What to wear in Egypt?

While most locals follow the strict Muslim dress code, it is not reqired for tourists. Dressing conservatively is a way to show your respect to their culture, so we recommend long loose-fitting pants and shirts that cover the shoulders when not riding. Ladies can bring a scarf to cover their hair when visiting mosques or churches, and men should avoid shorts when not at the beach.

When is the best time for a horse trail in Egypt?

Egypt can be incredibly hot in summer, so horse riding holidays run in the cooler months from October to May.

Can I see the pyramids on horseback?

Visiting the 7th Wonder of the World, the Giza Pyramids by horseback, should be on every horse riders bucket list! We suggest adding an extra 3 days to your trip, and beginning your horse riding adventure in Egypt with an exhilarating ride to explore these incredible tombs.

Do i need a visa to visit Egypt?

For the vast majority of visitors to Egypt, including visitors from Europe, Australia, Canada and the United States, you can purchase your visa on arrival. It is best to pay in cash and make sure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months after travel. Visa’s can also be purchased online through Egypt’s Visa e-portal and it is best to double-check your visa requirements before travelling.

“ Magical. Already planning for our next trip! I have just returned to Australia from my Palms and Pyramids tour. Egypt is just a magical country with all of its rich history and generally lovely, friendly locals… which was made even better being able to explore it on horseback! I loved every minute I spent on my 8 day tour, Emma is fabulous as well as our three guides Adham, Tommy and Yousef. They all really make you feel so welcome and a part of their Egyptian family in such a short time of knowing them. Their horses are fabulous and they pair all the riders perfectly to their horses. The horses are all very well trained and all make you feel very safe and looked after while riding. You can tell the horses love their jobs and are all very well cared for and loved by the whole team. The tour was a great mix of both riding and non riding experiences. My friend and I were both sad to leave Egypt at the end of the Ride Egypt tour and we are already planning for our next trip. “ It was always a bucket list trip for me and this trip exceeded all expectations. This trip was by far the best experience I’ve ever had. Every tour guide we had treated us like family & Emma was so accommodating. Even though we were there during Ramadan, Emma made sure we were fully taken care of. I felt like she was the Queen of Egypt with the wonderful treatment we received. I was nervous about traveling with the majority of people I’d never met, but the entire group was amazing and it’s an experience I’ll cherish for a lifetime. We are already talking about other African Horse Safaris we are interested in doing next year. The entire trip was so amazing and I couldn’t recommend it enough. 10/10, 5 stars, I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Emma and her team!!! ” Morgan Marks Palms Pyramids and Pharaohs - Egypt

Galloping along the pyramids, in the desert, swimming with beautiful horses in the red sea or watching Egypt's breathtaking sunrise/sunset. The horses are well taken care of and loved. I did the tour about Palms, Pyramids and Pharaohs. Emma and her team are very good to the horses and really want you to have the best time. Not only for riding experiences I've never imagined to live one day, also for the non-riding time I am so happy about our experiences. We had very knowledgeable guides and learned a lot about Egyptian history. Emma and the team are happy to share what Egyptian culture means and are very authentic. My personal non-riding highlight was a dinner cruise on river Nile after the visit to Luxor temple. Thank you so much, I hope to come back! ” Re Becca Wirbel Palms Pyramids and Pharaohs - Egypt

How to plan the ultimate adventure in Egypt, from Cairo to the Red Sea

Feluccas drifting down the River Nile, ancient wonders found in dusty temples, warm waters filled with tropical fish: Egypt remains one of the world’s most atmospheric destinations.

With millennia-old pyramids, hallowed temples and intricately painted tombs worthy of an art gallery, Egypt has a mindboggling amount of history on show. Some of the first threads of human civilisation started here over 5,000 years ago, and Egyptians still call their country umm al dunya — mother of the world.

Egypt offers the opportunity to time-travel like few other places. The past seems to keep careful watch over the present. The Pyramids of Giza — the last survivor of the original seven wonders of the ancient world — overlook cacophonous Cairo , the third-largest metropolis in Africa and the biggest in the Middle East. South along the River Nile, a temple built more than 3,400 years ago stands in the centre of the modern city of Luxor, which was once ancient Thebes.

The Nile flows through the hearts of most of Egypt’s major cities. This blue-green ribbon keeps the ever-encroaching biscuit-coloured desert at bay, coaxing lush plant life amid the Saharan sands. Fly in a hot-air balloon over the west bank of Luxor to see just how abruptly the desert reasserts its dominance over riverbanks lined with date palms and green grasses. Or travel like royalty, following in the footsteps of legendary pharaohs and their armies and merchants, on a scenic multi-day cruise along the Nile, making the temples and tombs between riverside Luxor and Aswan easily accessible.

( A practical guide to travelling in Egypt. )

Egypt’s extensive pharaonic history takes centre stage for most travellers, but even more adventure awaits on a different waterfront, to the east along the Red Sea in the Sinai Peninsula. The three Abrahamic faiths — Christianity, Islam and Judaism — put great credence in stories said to have unfolded in the mountains of the Sinai. Most famously, Moses is supposed to have received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, and listened to God at the burning bush, where he was instructed to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

These high peaks make a stunning backdrop for surfacing snorkellers and for scuba divers returning from explorations of the Red Sea. Beneath the water’s surface, a bountiful aquarium of sea turtles, sharks and neon-bright fish dart around flourishing coral reefs that sprout along the sea floor and scale the vertical walls. Witnessing the wildlife of the Red Sea is one of the world’s great underwater experiences, and pairing it with a Nile cruise allows travellers to experience the broad range of Egyptian adventures.

Itinerary 1: The Nile Valley

Start point: Cairo End point: Abu Simbel Distance travelled: 725 miles Average length: 10 days

Herodotus, the 5th-century BCE Greek historian, famously called Egypt the ‘gift of the Nile’, but perhaps that description doesn’t go far enough. Egypt would be almost nothing without it. The river, the longest in the world, isn’t simply a watery artery stretching nearly 1,000 miles across the length of the country — it’s a genuine lifeline, and one of the world’s earliest civilisations wouldn’t have started here without its life-giving properties.

Ancient Egypt’s major temples and cities were located along the Nile’s fertile banks, called Kemet (‘the black land’) by its inhabitants. The fact that the river flows from south to north was key to the Egyptians’ worldview, with its focus on the daily journey of the sun between the horizons. The desert fringes on the Nile’s west bank — symbolically associated with the land of the dead — are where you’ll find most of the country’s tombs and pyramids. The ancient Egyptian idea of paradise, the ‘Field of Reeds’, was but a heavenly version of the real-life abundance of greenery along the Nile. Today, some 95% of Egyptians still live within a few miles of the water.

This itinerary, following the Nile’s course upriver on a boat cruise, has been travelled since the days of the pharaohs, and it remains the most popular way to explore Egypt, hitting all of the country’s major historic sites. To escape the crowds, slow down — linger longer in Luxor, dig deeper in Cairo and relax in Aswan. Egypt hides many more treasures beyond the Pyramids of Giza and the Valley of the Kings for travellers who take the time to seek them out.

Highlights along the Nile Valley

1. Cairo Dive into Egypt’s chaotic capital. The Pyramids of Giza are the stars of the show, and the nearby Grand Egyptian Museum will be a blockbuster when it finally opens. For now, marvel at the 20 royal mummies at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and find the gold death mask of Tutankhamun, housed in the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square until the GEM is ready.

Tourists visiting Luxor temple

2. Luxor Take the train (around 10 hours, daytime or sleeper) to Luxor, built atop the ancient capital of Thebes. Big-hitters at this UNESCO site include the Luxor Temple and religious complex of Karnak, and the tombs of pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings outside town. Other nearby sites include the Ramesseum, whose giant statues inspired the poem ‘Ozymandias’, and the temple of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut.

3. Edfu Board a cruise boat in Luxor and spend the best part of the day sailing the Nile, with scenes of desert dunes and a shoreline punctuated with date palms unspooling outside your cabin. The standard first stop 70 miles upriver is Edfu, a tiny town with a well-preserved temple.

4. Kom Ombo The Nile crocodile takes centre stage at Kom Ombo, another 40 miles or around five hours’ sailing from Edfu. Half of the unique ‘double’ temple is dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile-headed god of pharaonic power and fertility, and an intriguing museum of mummified crocodiles awaits at the end of your visit.

5. Aswan All cruises dock at Aswan, after two nights on board en route from Luxor. The Nile is at its most fascinating here. Take a felucca (small sailboat) to Gharb Soheil, a brightly painted village home to a few thousand Nubians, an Indigenous group that has lived in the region since pharaonic times. For sunset, have a drink on the terrace of the Old Cataract Hotel , made famous by Agatha Christie, who wrote part of Death on the Nile here.

6. Abu Simbel Abu Simbel sits on the shore of Lake Nasser, created by the construction of the Aswan High Dam in 1970. The temples were rescued from rising waters by moving them stone by stone to higher ground. Twice a year, the sun still illuminates the figure of Ramses II and two of the three gods in the temple’s inner sanctum.

Itinerary 2: The Red Sea & Sinai

Start point: Sharm el-Sheikh End point: Nuweiba Distance travelled: 250 miles Average length: 7 days

Egypt’s best-known body of water is a river, but the Red Sea that stretches along the country’s eastern coast guarantees some thrilling aquatic adventures of its own. Suitable for all levels of underwater explorers, from snorkellers to advanced scuba divers, the Red Sea is a technicolour dream world beneath its surface. There are a huge number of endemic fish — including species of elegant highlighter-yellow butterflyfish, neon parrotfish and shy clownfish lingering in finger-like anemones — and thriving coral reefs.

Sprawling resorts have taken up much Red Sea real estate around Sharm el-Sheikh, but the development and crowds thin out as you travel north. Just a few miles inland from the coast, Sinai’s interior reaches for the sky, a sacred land of pilgrimage and revelations still lived in by long-established Bedouin tribes. Hiking trails climb to mountain summits and wind through valleys carved with centuries of graffiti left by visitors from the Nabataeans (of Petra fame) to the Crusaders, leading to secret wild swimming pools and small waterfalls.

This itinerary hits Egypt’s superlative highs and lows — from the country’s loftiest peaks to its deepest dive sites — as it traces the eastern edge of Sinai and traverses the peninsula’s biblically connected mountains.

Highlights on the Red Sea and Sinai

1. Sharm el-Sheikh When you need a break from sun, sand and snorkelling, Sharm has a couple of worthy distractions. The Sharm el-Sheikh Museum — the only such collection on the peninsula — has a digestible assortment of artefacts that span Egypt’s history from the pharaohs to the Bedouin. At the heart of the Old Market, which, despite its name, is quite new, the Sahaba Mosque looks like it could have come from the drawing board of Gaudí, with spiralling brick columns and honeycombed minarets.

2. Ras Mohamed National Park At the southernmost tip of Sinai, Egypt’s first national park is blessed with incredible dive sites. Vertical reef walls have names that hint at the types of species scuba divers and snorkellers can see: Jackfish Alley, Eel Garden, Shark Observatory and Anemone City. Divers with advanced certifications can check the shockingly large concentration of shipwrecks and the contents that have spilled out on the sea floor. Sleep in a canvas tent on the beach within the park boundaries at Bedouin-owned Bedawi Eco Camping .

africa safari egypt

3. Dahab A chilled hangout spot for a curious mix of nomadic types — of both the digital and Bedouin varieties — Dahab is Egypt’s most laid-back destination. Whitewashed cafes draped with colourful Bedouin-style rugs line the crescent-shaped bays, where flippered snorkellers waddle past remote workers clacking away on laptops. North of town, the Blue Hole is infamous for its underwater tunnel, the Arch, which has seen a number of fatalities over the years; it is a safe and popular spot for responsible snorkelling and diving outside of that.

4. St Catherine Sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims, the UNESCO-listed area around St Catherine’s contains the world’s oldest continuously lived-in Christian monastery, watched over by majestic mountains that are some of the tallest in the country. No matter your religious beliefs, join a night-time pilgrimage, arriving to witness sunrise from the summit of   Mt Sinai , or Jebel Musa (Mt Moses) in Arabic. Add on a day or more to walk with the local Jebeliya Bedouin through the neighbouring valleys that few outside visitors make time to see.

5. Nuweiba A small town with a laidback vibe and quiet golden beaches, one of Nuweiba’s main attractions is Dar Jan . A passion project by a couple who left the big smoke of Cairo, the nine-acre organic farm north of town is unlike elsewhere on the peninsula. Travellers can join creative workshops, including organic agriculture and outdoor survival skills, and spend artsy afternoons of pottery, meditation and mosaic-making. You can stay overnight, too.

Africa Safari Trip: A Comprehensive Guide To Crafting Unforgettable Memories

H ave you witnessed a lion’s roar echo across the savanna or watched a herd of elephants lumber by? An Africa safari trip is an otherworldly experience, but where do you even begin? This guide will equip you with all the essentials to plan your unforgettable adventure . Even though it can seem overwhelming at times, if you’re equipped with the right guidance and information, the procedure is rather easy.

To help you plan the perfect safari tour in Africa, in addition to answering the majority of your frequently asked questions, we’re put together some of the greatest tips and useful suggestions.

Choosing the Location of Your African Safari Trip

An Africa safari trip promises an enchanted world of discovery, where each expedition and place holds the potential to reveal a captivating tale. Every area of this enormous continent, from the lush deltas of the south to the brilliant savannahs of the east, offers a different fabric of fauna and culture. This is more than just a journey—it’s an exploration of the core of nature, where opportunity abounds at every turn.

African safaris are unique among travel experiences because of the authentic, natural spectacle of the wild. These excursions aim to fully immerse you in the world of animals, not just observe them. Planning your destination is among the most crucial aspects of preparation for any holiday, including this one. Africa is vast, so it’d be helpful to start with a “where to go on an Africa safari trip” Google search if you have no idea what to do.

To select the ideal safari destination, you must consider the things you wish to see. Are there any specific animals or cultural events you would like to see? Kenya and Tanzania from July to October are your best choices if you’ve always wanted to see the Great Wildebeest Migration. Visit either Botswana or South Africa to see a huge herd of African elephants throughout the year.

In East Africa and the majority of Southern African nations, the “Big Five” are also widely distributed. Travel to Uganda, Rwanda or the Congo for gorilla trekking; these countries are all in Central Africa. If you want to see chimpanzees on your Africa safari tour, Uganda is the ideal place to do it.

Top 5 Choice Destinations for Your Africa Safari Trip

Here are our top five African wildlife safari destinations to help you plan your trip.

Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve

At the Maasai Mara Reserves, the Big Five roam free, and boundless plains extend into the horizon on a wildlife safari. Traveling off-road and appreciating the lack of fences and lodging at any of the Mara conservation areas allows you to experience the breathtaking sight of countless wildebeests roaring across the East African savanna around the Great Migration.

From open safari vehicles, watch as lions hunt their prey with unparalleled subtlety. Elephants socialize within their close-knit groups, and elegant giraffes peruse acacia trees with grace. A fascinating insight into the Maasai people’s dynamic local culture, which is entwined with the land, its profusion of wildlife, and the natural beauties of the wildness itself, is provided by Maasai Mara.

Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park

Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park is home to a large environment that is brimming with life. See the boundless plains packed with antelopes, zebras, and wildebeests as they migrate in a never-ending dance of survival throughout your Africa safari trip. It’s what you anticipate seeing on game drives following your viewing of National Geographic or PBS programs. You might be amazed watching the big cats lounging in the shade following a good hunt, or you might experience the exhilaration of seeing a cheetah racing across the landscape in a flurry of speed.

There are other methods to observe wildlife, such as taking a hot-air balloon flight across the savanna for breath-inspiring, all-encompassing views of this iconic African terrain. Seasonality is essential when thinking about visiting the Serengeti; never schedule an unplanned online vacation.

Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park

You can feel the African wilderness in Zambia, not just see it. In contrast to safaris that are limited to metal enclosures, South Luangwa encourages you to stroll among the animals rather than drive by them. Imagine your heart racing as you make your way through verdant riverine forests full of leopards hiding in their disguises, only to be astounded by vast herds of buffalo crossing wide-open savannas.

As you approach elephants bathing, listen to the Luangwa River’s rushing waters, which will lead you to the echoes of night safaris. You can unwind in the unexpected comfort of fly tents or treehouse retreats when the stars adorn the sky.

South Africa’s Greater Kruger National Park

You can journey across acacia woodlands and tour places with sun-filled savannas along the rushing waters of the Sabi River in South Africa’s Greater Kruger National Park. Hear the echoes of prehistoric existence and see the exhilarating dance of adventures amidst the rare species. Renowned for its almost assured Big Five meetings, you get to experience the exhilarating thrill of seeing elephants trumpeting by a waterhole or lions relaxing in golden light—you don’t have to imagine it.

There is more to Kruger’s artistry than the Big Five. Higher populations of predators and a more varied array of species can be found in the superb private game reserves found in the Greater Kruger National Park. Wander along the river where crocodiles and hippos sunbathe before becoming lost in the rainbow of more than 500 different bird species.

Botswana’s Okavango Delta

Emerald islands emerge from the reflecting waters of the spreading waterways of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A mokoro is a native dugout canoe in which you may sail softly and intimately while spotting sleeping hippos afar and thirsty elephants sipping at the riverbanks .

Search among the trees for one of the greatest spots to see leopards or take in the aerial views of storks, eagles, and pelicans.

In such a distant location, the Okavango Delta boasts one of the largest concentrations of upscale safari resorts in Southern Africa, providing you with exclusive access to convenience and uncrowded rivers for a singular embrace of unspoiled wildlife.

Tips For An Outstanding African Safari Adventure

The foundation of a great African safari is effective communication. It makes sure you get the best possible experience out of your trip by bridging the gap between what you expect and the actual conditions of the environment. There are three communication techniques to help you receive the experience you want by interacting with an Africa safari trip guide or travel advisor .

Clearly state your demands and desires. Tell us about your ideal speed, cultural attractions, the wildlife you hope to see, and any unique interests you may have, such as birdwatching or photography. This enables your guide to customize your safari adventures based on your interests and budget. Mention any possible restrictions. Any physical restrictions or sensitivity should be disclosed to your guide to guarantee a fun and safe trip.

Pose inquiries. Never be afraid to ask questions about anything that piques your curiosity, be it local customs or the behavior of animals. Your guide holds a wealth of information that is just waiting to be discovered.

African safaris are an ode to the diversity and grandeur of nature. Every excursion offers a chance for a profound and intimate connection with nature. However, in a world full of breathtaking locations, the real art of travel is in how you take in each one. Each destination has a spirit of its own, and you can make transforming vacation experiences with the correct itinerary in addition to ones that are simply memorable.

Whether you’re traveling to the wild African savannahs or the charming countryside of Tuscany, creating a one-of-a-kind, dreamlike trip requires careful planning and vital information. It all comes down to creating a seamless, stress-free, and uniquely personalized tapestry of memories.

I've been on over 100 safaris across Africa and repeatedly see tourists make 11 big mistakes, from sleeping in to ignoring birds

  • I've been on over 100 safaris and often see tourists make the same mistakes time and again.
  • Some ignore birds, while others exit the vehicle to get closer to wildlife, which is dangerous.
  • Here's my advice on what not to do on safari, plus tips to improve your chances of seeing wildlife.

Insider Today

I'm a travel writer living in Nairobi, and I've been on more than 100 safaris across Africa.

africa safari egypt

I currently live in Nairobi, Kenya, working as a travel writer and vlogger, and have been to about 15 countries in Africa over the last 10 years.

As part of my travels, I often go on safari where I'm always awed by how large elephants are, the cunning nature of hyenas, the agility of leopards, the social life of lions, and the beauty of lilac-breasted rollers.

I've been on well over 100 safaris for leisure or on assignment as a journalist, in countries like Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and my home, Kenya.

On many of those safaris, I've shared vehicles with other tourists, and met travelers from all over the world, from the United States to Russia and Europe. I've also observed some common mistakes that people seem to make when they take this type of trip.

Here are the biggest safari mistakes to avoid, plus my tips for how to maximize your experience.

Most often, I've observed tourists become disappointed when they don't see wildlife.

africa safari egypt

I've been to most of the wildlife parks in Kenya, like Amboseli , Samburu , Shaba , Tsavo East & West , Meru , and Lake Nakuru National Parks .

I always find the big cats impressive here, such as lionesses chasing a zebra through the plains, or a leopard hauling its prey up a tree as hyenas circle below hoping it falls.

On a recent safari, I observed two-month old lion cubs, still too young to eat meat, lapping up blood from a gazelle that their mother hunted and dragged under the shade of bushes. This sighting was, however, at the end of a three-hour morning game drive.

Whenever I'm sharing a vehicle with other tourists, particularly first timers, I see some becoming impatient after a few hours without such sightings.

It's understandable; you've come to Africa for the safari of a lifetime, and want to see and photograph it all. But as I've learned, you can't set up an appointment with wildlife. Sometimes, a leopard remains elusive.

I think you'll have a better time if you're able to relax and enjoy the sightings as they come.

In addition to being patient on drives, I don't think visitors communicate what they hope to see to their guide, or make enough attempts.

africa safari egypt

If there's an animal you really want to see, speak up.

Guides can use their expertise and knowledge of the landscape to drive to the areas where they know that you're more likely to spot the animals that you hope to see.

You should also plan to go on more than one game drive. For a two to three-day trip, I recommend going for both morning and evening drives, every day, to maximize your chances.

One of the biggest mistakes tourists make is thinking they can get out of the vehicle to take photos with wildlife. It could risk your life.

africa safari egypt

While on safari, I've seen tourists in other vehicles get out in areas to try and get close to wildlife where park rules prohibit them to do so.

You should always stay in the safari vehicle, and if you need to get out, communicate that to your guide who knows the landscape and will advise if it's safe.

Rather than risk your life, there are other places you can go if you want to get up close with animals.

In Nairobi, I like to spend time with orphaned baby elephants at Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and watch them mud bathe and guzzle milk formula. Another option I recommend is to feed pellets to Rothschild Giraffes at Giraffe Center.

And at Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia, visitors may join rangers to track the endangered southern white rhinos on foot, which will place you within a few feet of the animals.

Not only are experiences like these safe, but they still provide the thrill of an up-close encounter, and proceeds usually go back to the continued protection of the wildlife.

Often, I meet tourists who only go to the most popular parks, and in the high season. Then, they complain about how crowded it is.

africa safari egypt

Some of Africa's best-known parks are Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya, and Kruger National Park in South Africa. And I understand the popularity — all of these destinations have an abundance of wildlife and stunning landscapes.

According to Safari Outfitter & Beyond , who I've been with on safari a few times in Serengeti and Maasai Mara, the best time for a Kenyan safari is the high season from June to October, when sparse vegetation and limited water draws wildlife to waterholes making them easier to spot.

But because of this phenomenon, I've always found this time period to be busy and crowded, which can take away from the experience.

In my experience, guides tend to work collaboratively and radio one another whenever there's a sighting, and when word gets out that a coalition of cheetahs were spotted, soon there are 20 cars charging to surround them at the same time. I also find the parks become particularly busy during the annual wildebeest migration season, and lodges get fully booked as tourists travel to witness it.

I've seen first-timers then become frustrated that the experience isn't the remote safari they pictured.

If you prefer less crowds, choose a less popular park, or consider a visit at another time.

I've seen many tourists wrongly assume that Africa is hot all the time, and fail to pack warm clothing.

africa safari egypt

In my experience, visitors to Africa tend to have the perception that it will be really hot, all the time. I think this is probably because of documentaries and movies they might have watched where people are dressed as such, and that's how the landscape is portrayed.

But I've found that isn't always the case. I've experienced many cold nights in some parks, even if it's not the rainy season when it can be cold and wet.

According to Masai Mara , temperatures in that park can range between 52 and 82-degrees Fahrenheit, and I know it will feel quite cold when it hits that lower end.

I suggest that visitors bring warm clothing to layer like jackets, scarves, and even gloves. Plus, some safari vehicles are open on the sides, and in my experience, this can make it feel really cold when driving fast during the day, too.

Another big mistake I've witnessed is choosing not to wake up early for game drives.

africa safari egypt

Guides have explained to me that the best times for game drives are the cooler hours of the day, around sunrise and sunset.

They say this is because it's when the weather is more comfortable for animals. During later parts of the day, guides have said that animals prefer to stay tucked away under the shade to avoid the scorching heat. This means it's less likely you'll see much action if you choose to head out only in the afternoon.

To increase my chances of seeing wildlife, I choose morning drives that require wake-up calls as early as 4:30 a.m. On those drives, I've shared a vehicle with others where I heard them complain that it's too early.

It definitely is, and the roads can be rough, and the drives can be long and tiring, particularly if it's several days back to back. But I know morning is the best time to go if you want to see as many animals as possible.

I've spotted wildlife later in the day, too, but whenever I've come across a pride of lions around midday, for instance, they're usually sleeping.

Discuss with your guide to figure out a schedule that works best for you. If you can wake up early, though, I find the sunrises over the African bush are always so spectacular. Why would you want to miss such beauty?

Ignoring bird life is another commonly-made mistake.

It took me around 30 game drives to finally get into birdwatching.

I started off indifferent, but now I squeal with excitement when I spot a Marshall Eagle with its large wing-span perched atop a tree at Shaba National Reserve in Kenya, or if I've eyed a small gazelle, or a kettle of vultures stealing a zebra carcass from a hyena.

I wish I knew sooner that birds are really cool, and I think many visitors make this same mistake because they become too focused on just large wildlife.

I finally came to this realization thanks to helpful guides I met who helped me learn interesting facts about birds and their social life, and now I'm always left wanting to know more.

I don't think many people realize that there are many ways to do a safari.

With over 100 safaris under my belt, I've been on so many game drives that I started getting a little jaded about driving around and seeing animals from a land cruiser, every time.

So I decided to switch things up recently, and I don't think many people know there are other ways to see wildlife besides from a car.

I've now been on several hot air balloons, from which I've spotted elephants in Amboseli National Park with Mt. Kilimanjaro's snow-capped peak in the background. And it was from a balloon that I tracked black rhinos through the mud one rainy morning in Borana Conservancy .

I've also enjoyed camel-back safaris, boat cruises, and sunset walking safaris, and recommend working them into your itinerary to experience different perspectives.

Please stop bringing plastic bags and bottles into the parks.

Countries like Kenya and Rwanda have banned single-use plastics including water bottles, straws, disposable cups, and cutlery in protected areas like parks, forests, and beaches.

You're often not even allowed to bring your plastic bag carry-ons through the airports. According to section 144 of Kenya's Environmental Management and Co-Ordination act , if you're caught breaking this law, there are severe fines of one to four years in jail, or a $16,000 fine.

And while I haven't heard of cases of tourists being charged or fined, I still often see them trying to bring these items into the parks, where they're usually confiscated.

I think it's better to just plan ahead and adhere to the law, and also to make more efforts to be respectful of the land to preserve it for generations to come.

I wish lodge guests would be more considerate of others and keep the volume of their music down.

In my experience, many rooms at overnight lodges are located really close to each other.

In a few instances, I've struggled to sleep or relax as guests next to me played really loud music.

I can appreciate a good playlist as much as the next person, but I wish more tourists would be more considerate of other guests.

I find going to the bush to be a time for serenity and disconnecting from the bustle of city life. Returning to blasting music detracts from that feeling, in my opinion.

Instead, turn your music off and take your stay as a chance to listen to the sweet cacophony of nature. And should you strongly desire to still listen to Drake over the hippos grunting in the distance, please just keep your volume at a reasonable level.

Finally, I think too many tourists don't take advantage of the low season when it's much easier to plan a safari on a budget.

africa safari egypt

In the low season between March and May when there is often heavy rain, the roads get muddy and vegetation grows tall and thick.

In my experience, this draws less tourists, and as a result, lodges tend to reduce rates to attract visitors. I've found you can save a lot of money if you visit then instead of high season.

So if you're looking to go on safari on a budget and don't mind getting wet from time to time, you might want to come during this period, since I've seen firsthand that the wildlife is still visible. I also think it's a unique time since the vegetation is lush and green, the bird life is abundant, and new calves are birthed.

I've also seen that fewer tourist numbers means less congestion of vehicles in parks for a more isolated experience.
