Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift started her 1989 Tour at Tokyo Dome in the city’s Suidobashi district on Tuesday night. The 55,000 seat cylindrical stadium was packed to the hilt, and the organizers placed light-emitting wristbands on every seat so the entire crowd illuminated and changed colors in unison.

The show started with video testimonials and comments from Taylor’s friends, like Selena Gomez, Haim, and others (there was no opening act, unlike her upcoming U.S. dates). This technique continued throughout the show, primarily when the star disappeared to change costumes (which happened at least 10 times).

Swift opened with “Welcome to New York,” using a mock NYC backdrop and featuring her retinue of all-male dancers. For the third track, Swift launched into “Blank Space” and extended the number by using a vocal loop of her singing to repeat the word “Tokyo” and harmonize with herself.

Trending on Billboard

Swift explained her decision to start the tour in Tokyo: “This year changed my life and I wanted to come here to say thank you.”

The 1989 album was heavily featured in this tour starter, and Swift gave a number of explanations pertaining to the release. “For this album I was a 25-year-old girl, single, writing about love from the outside looking in. I learned a lot about love from…watching movies! Eighties teen movies like Sixteen Candles. “

Swift  continued to explain the basic plot of these kinds of movies where something would drive the would-be lovers apart. She noted, “And then at the end of the movie the person shows up and says what the other person wants to hear….at 2 a.m.” With that she launched into “I Wish You Would,” a track that mentions “2 a.m” in the lyrics.

Later in the show, Swift ventured out on to the walkway, elevated high above the crowd. Standing alone with an acoustic guitar, Swift mused, “A lot of people find themselves with these blurred lines or mixed messages, not knowing if the person loves them back. In a perfect world it’s like you tell your love simply. You only have two options…either you leave…or you stay.” With that she leapt into “You Are in Love” solo with her steel string.

Before the next track, and still on the narrow platform above the floor audience, she observed, “There are 55,000 people here tonight and I can only assume that some of you have gone through hard times. I can only assume that some of you turned to music at those times, like I have. So we have that in common.”

Florence Welch on Taylor Swift: ‘She Knows Her Stuff About Boys’

Taylor then offered encouragement to audience, playing the ‘helpful friend’ role she’s often identified with. “Remember, you are not your mistakes. You are not damaged goods. You are not the opinion of someone who doesn’t know you. You are someone who survived a rainstorm which made you stronger. Now I believe a lot of rainstorms make you clean….clean.” With that the crane rotated and the songstress began “Clean.”

Still up on the crane, the singer then let loose with “Love Story,” and the crowd reacted as loudly to that as any track of the night. Back on the main stage, Taylor broke out her electric guitar for “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” as the Dome rocked.

Switching instruments, she sat down at the piano and told the crowd, “I’m looking out at an ocean of people that have been singing along all night and that’s so beautiful that you would do that even if you don’t speak English! It makes me feel so wistful and romantic that you would do that.” And then she massaged the keyboards for the mash-up “Enchanted/Wildest Dreams.”

All the dancers and Taylor boogied on the catwalk high above the floor as it rotated and moved forward for the finale “Shake It Off.” Confetti rained on the audience more than once, bringing to a close to the nearly two-hour performance.

The elated audience was only outdone by Swift, who looked genuinely thrilled at the superb show she just pulled off.

Taylor Swift's 1989 World Tour: A Track By Track Breakdown

taylor swift 1989 world tour japan

TOKYO -- It is here, Swifties. Taylor Swift' s 1989 World Tour has kicked off in Tokyo and not only are the 55,000 people at the Toyko Dome excited, but fans all over the world woke up super early to get their first glance at the show on the Internet (including me).

MTV News had someone at the show, giving us updates from within, while we scoured around for any bit of Tay we could scavenge! And from her sexy "I Know Places" costume to her hard rock version of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" to onscreen cameos from the likes of Lena Dunham, Selena Gomez, HAIM, Karlie Kloss and Cara Delevingne, here's your look at Tay's tour -- one track at a time.

Let's begin, shall we?

'Welcome To New York'

Jun Sato/Getty Images for TS

Tay starts the show with "WTNY" in a glittery blazer. The dome is also a-glitter with light-up bracelets provided for everyone.

Here we gooooooo!

With her flock of male dancers, she welcomes the crowd, walking down a platform in heels. Behind her, a NYC-centric backdrop flashes like city streets.

"It's a new soundtrack/ I can dance to this beat/ Forever more."

"It's been waitin' for you."

Ummm... did girl just take her blazer off? Damn!

'New Romantics'

Fans really freaked when she went into "New Romantics," a bonus track off 1989 .

Let's all lose our chill together.

'Blank Space'

Aaaaand you know she couldn't get away without doing fan-favorite "Blank Space." (Although she didn't play "Wonderland.")

The blazer is back on!

"And you! Love! The game!"

'I Knew You Were Trouble'

"IKYWT" is remixed. She slows it down, gets sinister, almost channeling a Lorde-type vibe.

Plumes of smoke were thrown from the stage during the chorus.

And the colors of the bracelets were synched up to the show. During "IKYWT," they turned red.

We're only three songs in and it's a funeral for Swifties.

Gone is the purple skirt. Swift knows how to change outfits like a pro.

"Trouble, trouble, trouble."

'I Wish You Would'

Taylor talks to the crowd.

'How You Get The Girl'

Taylor switched into a pink dress, while her dancers brought out umbrellas for "How You Get The Girl."

The umbrellas light up! And there's more NYC imagery. The Brooklyn Bridge shows up in the background.

Fake rain falls onscreen as Taylor gets all cute.

Look at all those people!

'I Know Places'

Taylor quick-changes once again and she's off into "I Know Places."

That grunt doe.

OK, we're all on the same page about that growl.

She called everyone her friends.

'All You Had To Do Was Stay'

And then Taylor seduced us all with her crystalized blue eyes.

She's singing on the floor!

'You Are In Love'

She got on a stage extension and rose into the air for "You Are In Love."

It's acoustic and she's got the guitar out.

The crowd echoes her, just like in the recording!

She's wearing another crop top for this one -- this time it's royal blue.

Haim makes an appearance in a pre-taped video.

And so do her cats, Olivia and Meredith.

Now it's time for "Clean," and the visuals for the "Style" video are on. (Another hint that the video could've been for "Clean." )

And now she's lying on the cold, hard ground again.

'Love Story'

Swift brings it back to the good ol' days with "Love Story."

I'm almost certain she recycled her old outfits.

It's time for another outfit change and another song. It's "Style"!

"I've got that red lip classic thing that you like."

"Watch us go round and round each time."

'This Love'

She works a white, fringe leotard for "This Love."

"These hands had to let it go free and this love came back to me."

'Bad Blood'

Taylor is in LEATHER and singing "Bad Blood."

Again. Leather.

'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together'

Swizzle turns "WANEGBT" into a hard rock jam . So badass.

I'm not worthy.

'Enchanted'

She goes right from "Enchanted" into "Wildest Dreams."

'Wildest Dreams'

The piano comes out for "Wildest Dreams."

Somehow she managed to change into ANOTHER sparkly suit.

It looks just like Karlie Kloss' Victoria's Secret suit!

"Say you'll see me again even if it's just in your wildest dreams."

'Out Of The Woods'

During "Out of the Woods," some giant paper airplanes flew out. You know, like Harry Styles' plane ?

'Shake It Off'

Time to dance.

Is it over already?

All of Taylor's outfits throughout the night.

Some fans get to meet up after the show at "Loft 89."

"The view that took my breath away...55,000 strong." - Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift ‘1989’ World Tour: Set list, costumes, the stage, the spectacle

taylor swift 1989 world tour japan

Warning: If you’re one of the Taylor Swift fans planning to see a concert on her highly-hyped “1989” world tour this year and don’t want spoilers, look away.

But if you’re curious about how one of the savviest pop stars of our time puts on a massive concert (expected to gross about $200 million ) here are some scenes from the first tour stop. It kicked off at the Tokyo Dome in Japan on Tuesday in front of a 55,000-plus sold out crowd; immediately, details started pouring out on social media.

[ How Taylor Swift really, truly said goodbye to country music at the ACM Awards ]

* The set list:

While Swift’s set list generally stays the same throughout a tour, she’s always one for surprises: As she’s acknowledged, most of her diehard fans — the ones that ensure she’s the only artist who can still sell a million copies of an album these days — have watched  the entire concert on YouTube months before they arrive at the venue.

“Everything we’ve ever done, every decision I’ve made on my last tours, I wanted to flip it and do the opposite for this one,” Swift recently told “Access Hollywood.” “You have to switch it up, cause people get bored — more easily in 2015 than ever before.”

[ What a single tweet from Taylor Swift does to your music sales ]

Judging from the lists that have cropped up on Twitter, Swift plays nearly the entire “1989” album during the two-hour concert. Her Nashville roots are long gone, as are the majority of famous hits from her first albums. Though she does go back in time for “Love Story” (the third-highest selling digital country song of all time); “Enchanted” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”

For the record, Swift’s show in Tokyo started at around 6:30 p.m. in Japan, translating to 5:30 a.m. Eastern: But fans were eagerly waking up at all hours to find the details:

* The stage:

Swift will play many stadiums and arenas on the tour (which arrives in America on May 20 in Bossier City, La.), so expect it to look something like this:

* Costume changes

Swift promised the fashion would be epic this time around.

* The opening number:

Looks like Swift, a New York City ambassador , appropriately kicks off with her “Welcome to New York” anthem:

* The Katy Perry song:

Otherwise known as “Bad Blood,” the ultimate burn, and upcoming single.

[ Taylor Swift’ ‘Bad Blood’: How we can tell she’s singing about Katy Perry ]

* The Harry Styles song:

“Style,” naturally, also known as her current single.

* The show closer:

“Shake It Off,” of course.

[ Is Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ video offensive? That’s what people say, mmm mmm. ]

* The after-party:

Similarly to the “T-Party” and “Club Red,” Swift’s team invites the hardcore fans to a meet and greet after the show. Looks like this one is called “Loft 89,” according to @TSwiftOnTour , a fan account that tweets details from every concert.

1989 Tour kicks off in Japan

Taylor Scalise , Staff Writer | May 6, 2015

Tuesday night, Taylor Swift kicked off the 1989 World Tour in Tokyo, Japan. 55,000 fans piled into the Tokyo Dome after waiting outside for hours to see the queen do what she does best.

When fans got to their seats, they were greeted by a bracelet that glowed different colors to the beat and themes of each song.

Swift started the two-hour show in a purple skirt and black crop top with 1989 ‘s first track, “Welcome to New York,” followed by fan favorite “New Romantics.” The setlist included a total of eighteen songs in the following order:

  • “Welcome to New York”
  • “New Romantics”
  • “Blank Space”
  • “I Knew You Were Trouble”
  • “How You Get The Girl”
  • “I Know Places”
  • “All You Had to Do Was Stay”

  • “This Love”
  • “Bad Blood”
  • “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”

  • “Shake It Off”

Many songs on the setlist were revamped, including “I Knew You Were Trouble” and a rock version of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”

The show contained many costume changes, and a catwalk that raised from the stage and spun.

In true Taylor Swift fashion, after the show she invited about twenty fans backstage to meet her in Loft 89. The best fans from each crowd are chosen for Loft 89 by Swift’s mother, Andrea, and other members of her team.

After the show, Taylor Swift tweeted, “The 1989 World Tour has officially started. I love you. I love you. I love you.”

Taylor Swift will bring the 1989 to Heinz Field on June 6, the same day as Bethel Park High School’s graduation, and tickets are still available through Ticketmaster.

The Tortured Poets Department  has arrived!

After months of anticipation, Taylor Swift dropped her 11th studio album on Friday at midnight on the East Coast. The full-length album marks Swift's first new material since she released the GRAMMY-winning  Midnights in 2022.

Swift announced the new album's release with a philosophical and contemplative post to X (formerly Twitter) that addressed the themes of the album -- including breakups, self-reflection and healing.

" The Tortured Poets Department . An anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time -- one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure," Swift wrote. "This period of the author’s life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted."

"This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it," she continued. "And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry."

Within minutes of the release, fans began to realize just how emotional the new album truly is. The tracks deal with the nuances and pain of heartbreak, failed romances, the pain of seeing your dreams for the future radically change, and eventually healing and mending emotional and psychological wounds.

See some of the most heartbreaking lyrics below, from tracks including "So Long, London," "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart," "loml,' "Down Bad" and "But Daddy I Love Him."

Swift  first announced the news  of  Tortured Poets  onstage at the  GRAMMY s while accepting her 13th trophy from the Recording Academy in February. At the time, Swift teased that the project had been in the works for two years. Then, during an Eras Tour stop in Tokyo, Japan, Swift  further elaborated on the timeline .

"I've been working on  Tortured Poets  since right after I turned in  Midnights , " she told the audience, clarifying that albums are submitted "months in advance" so they can be finalized.

Midnights   was released in October 2022. Since then, the star has also also notably released  two rerecorded albums :  Speak Now (Taylor's Version)  and  1989 (Taylor's Version) .

"I've been working on it for about two years," she confirmed of  Tortured Poets . "I kept working on it throughout the U.S. tour and when it was perfect, in my opinion, when it was good enough for you, I finished it."

In an unconventional move, Swift opted not to put out any singles ahead of Tortured Poets ' official release. She did, however,  share the full track list, bonus track titles, and multiple album covers ahead of time.

As for the subject matter, Tortured Poets  was widely anticipated to be a breakup album about Swift's split from her longtime love, Joe Alwyn . It was  in April 2023 that ET broke the news  that Swift and her boyfriend of six years had called it quits. At the time, a source said the split was amicable and "was not dramatic." ET was also told "the relationship had just run its course."

Then, in November, Swift's close collaborator  Jack Antonoff  let slip a messy new detail. Offering a digital breadcrumb for sleuthing Swifties,  the producer revealed  that he and Swift had written and recorded her song about a dying relationship,  "You're Losing Me ," on Dec. 5, 2021.

Though Swift herself rarely confirms who her songs are about, her album title appears to be a reference to an interview Alwyn gave an interview to  Variety  in late 2022 when he revealed that he was in a group chat called "the Tortured Man Club."  The track "So Long, London" also caught many eyes, with Swifties wondering if it might also be a reference to Alwyn, who is English.

Today, Swift is in a relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce . Just last weekend, the couple put their love on display while attending the Coachella Valley Music and Arts festival. In social media videos posted from the event, Swift and Kelce were seen happily embracing, dancing and even making out while enjoying the festivities.

"Taylor and Travis were so excited to go to Coachella together,"  a source told ET this week . "They wanted to be there to support their friends and just have fun. They had the best time at the festival and were in their own world even though so many people were around them. They are very in love and in sync in so many aspects of their lives, and it's very sweet to see."

Another source added, "The two are continuing to explore their relationship by supporting each other's endeavors and doing what every other couple does, and that's go on dates. This is one of many adventures yet to come for the duo."

For his part, Kelce is gearing up to host his second annual  Kelce Jam , presented by Jim Beam. The festival goes down May 18 at Azura Amphitheater in Kansas City. Some of this year's featured artists include like Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz and Diplo.

"It's definitely been fun to experience her taste in music, for sure," Kelce  recently said of Swift in an interview with ET . "She's so amazing at what she does. And to find that creativity to see where she likes to pull things from and just, really, how she listens to music is very eye-opening for me. It's been fun to hear her take on it."

The Tortured Poets Department  is out now.

Taylor Swift’s “But Daddy I Love Him” Is An Ode To Bad Boys

If Swift were a Disney Princess, she’d clearly be Ariel.

SINGAPORE, SINGAPORE - MARCH 02: EDITORIAL USE ONLY. NO BOOK COVERS Taylor Swift performs during "Ta...

Taylor Swift is pregnant — no, she’s not, but you should see your faces. On the highly anticipated “But Daddy I Love Him,” from her new album, The Tortured Poets Department , the singer delivers a country-tinged ode to dating bad boys and addresses anyone who has something to say about it.

Swift begins the song by expressing shock at how people turn from supporters to critics on a dime, depending on the man she’s dating. She makes it clear that she doesn’t need anyone’s approval, even teasing a wild scenario. “I’m having his baby — no, I’m not, but you should see your faces,” she sings.

She stands her ground in the bridge, addressing listeners directly with a pointed message. “I’ll tell you something about my good name, it’s mine alone to disgrace,” she sings. That said, she is aware on some level that she’s not making the best decision. “No, I’m not coming to my senses,” she sings. “I know he’s crazy, but he’s the one I want.”

Some fans think the song alludes to 1975 lead singer Matty Healy , who she reportedly dated briefly after splitting from Joe Alwyn in March 2023. The two were linked for two months before splitting over the summer, but their brief relationship sparked criticism , even from Swift’s biggest fans.

The song’s title is a clear reference to The Little Mermaid , in which Ariel famously protests when her dad, King Triton, doesn’t allow her to swim to the surface to meet Prince Eric. Swift is a noted fan of the film, which was released in her birth year, 1989, and even dressed as Ariel for a New Year’s party in 2019.

Just like in the movie, by the end of “But Daddy I Love Him,” the narrator’s father approves of the metaphorical bad boy. But unlike the Disney film, nobody else gives him a chance. “We came back when the heat died down, went to my parents and they came around,” she sings. “All the wine moms are still holding out, but f*ck ’em, it’s over.”

“But Daddy I Love Him” Lyrics

Read the song’s full lyrics below.

I forget how the West was won, I forget if this was ever fun
I just learned these people only raise you to cage you
Sarahs and Hannahs in their Sunday best, clutching their pearls, sighing, “What a mess”
I just learned these people try and save you ‘cause they hate you
Too high a horse for a simple girl to rise above it
They slammed the door on my whole world, the one thing I wanted
Now I’m running with my dress unbuttoned, screaming, “But daddy I love him”
I’m having his baby — no I'm not, but you should see your faces
I’m telling him to floor it through the fences, no, I’m not coming to my senses
I know he’s crazy, but he’s the one I want
Dutiful daughter, all my plans were laid, tendrils tucked into a woven braid
Growing up precocious sometimes means not growing up at all
He was chaos, he was revelry, bedroom eyes like a remedy
Soon enough the elders had convened down at the City Hall
"Stay away from her,” the saboteurs protested too much
Lord knows the words we never heard, just screeching tires and true love
And I’m running with my dress unbuttoned, screaming, “But daddy I love him”
I’ll tell you something right now
I’d rather burn my whole life down
Than listen to one more second of all this b*tching and moaning
I’ll tell you something about my good name, it’s mine alone to disgrace
I don’t cater to all these vipers dressed in empath’s clothing
God save the most judgmental creeps who say they want what’s best for me
Sanctimoniously performing soliloquies I’ll never see
Thinking it can change the beat of my heart when he touches me
And counteract the chemistry and undo the destiny
You ain’t gotta pray for me
Me and my wild boy and all this wild joy
If all you want is grey for me, then it's just white noise, then it's just my choice
There’s a lotta people in town that I bestow upon my fakest smiles
Scandal does funny things to pride but brings lovers closer
We came back when the heat died down, went to my parents and they came around
All the wine moms are still holding out, but f*ck ‘em, it’s over
Now I’m dancing in my dress in the sun and even my daddy just loves him
I’m his lady and oh my God, you should see your faces
Time, doesn’t it give some perspective?
And no, you can’t come to the wedding
I know he’s crazy but he’s the one I want
You ain’t gotta pray for me, me and my wild boy and all this wild joy
If all you want is grey for me, then it’s just white noise, it’s my choice
Screaming, “But daddy I love him”
I’m having his baby — no I’m not, but you should see your faces
But oh my God, you should see your faces
