CBS Television City

Built in 1952, CBS Television City was one of the first and largest complexes built expressly for television production and broadcasting.

In the early 1950s, Los Angeles was just entering the height of its power as the capital of television broadcasting, but intentions to become the capital of television broadcasting were made clear by the construction of Columbia Broadcasting Systems’ (CBS) Television City in 1952.

In the early 1950s, Los Angeles was just entering the height of its power as the capital of television broadcasting, but its intentions were made clear by the construction of Columbia Broadcasting Systems’ (CBS) Television City in 1952 at the southeast corner of Beverly Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue.

Built on a portion of Rancho San Rafael that once contained an oil field, then a football field and racetrack, Television City was one of the first and largest complexes built expressly for television production and broadcasting. CBS hired the prolific local architecture firm, Pereira & Luckman, to design its new headquarters, which contained soundstages, studios, editing rooms, offices, rehearsal halls, shops, and storage. Among the architects on the Pereira & Luckman project team were acclaimed architects, Gin Wong, James Langenheim, and Charles Stanton. On the interior, flexibility was key: studio walls, and even some exterior walls, could be moved and rearranged to accommodate the needs of specific productions.

The result is a stark International Style design of flat-roofed rectangular volumes with either glass or unornamented stucco walls, all in dramatic black and white with bright red accents.

For more than six decades and counting it has been the portal by which some of America’s most beloved television shows have been produced. From within its modern and custom-designed stages, television broke new ground, from variety/sketch comedy television shows like The Carol Burnett Show to the life of Archie Bunker and the controversial issues of the day in All in the Family . The Price Is Right was filmed at Television City until 2023. If you drive by at the right time of day, you’ll see costumed hopefuls waiting in line for their chance to win cash and prizes.

About This Place

Thanks to the effort of The Conservancy and in collaboration with Hackman Capital Partners, a refined plan will preserve historic TVC while allowing for significant new development at this legendary studio property: a comprehensive framework for a state-of-the-art modernization will preserve the historic complex and maintain the 430- foot Beverly Boulevard view shed.

In March 2021, Hackman Capital Partners announced plans to reinvest and build new stages and offices throughout the 25-acre property. In June 2018, it was designated a Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM).

This proposed project is still in the early phases of the development and approval process. The Conservancy will remain involved and ultimately be a part of the formal review process regarding the design and materiality of the proposed new construction. The Conservancy’s goal has been to preserve TVC, though not freezing it in time, but kept in a way where new development does not fundamentally harm this conic L.A. landmark.

While The Conservancy supports density and is glad to see reinvestment and job creation, we had serious concerns about where the density was being placed in the initial plan for proposed new construction at CBS Television City and how it would impact the historic studio building. The expansion project at the time included a multi-story building directly on top of the historic landmark. Now, thanks to our efforts, a refined plan is in place to preserve this location’s legacy.

March 26, 2021

On March 26, 2021,  plans were revealed  for a $1.25-billion overhaul to historic CBS Television City (1952) in the Fairfax District. The Conservancy, which initiated and worked very closely with CBS on the studio’s Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM) designation in 2018, has long-anticipated new development on the parcels around the historic building. While we support density and are glad to see reinvestment and job creation, we have serious concerns about where the density is being placed in the proposed new construction and how it will impact the historic studio building.

As envisioned at the time, a new multi-story building was to be built directly on top of the HCM-designated historic studio building. Looming large over CBS Television City, we believed this to be incompatible and to potentially jeopardize its historic status.

Hackman Capital is seeking a specific plan approval (along with other approvals, including a General Plan amendment) for office expansion and new studio spaces, initially proposed for between 15 to 21 studios.

In 2018, CBS Corp. sold its 25-acre Television City property, to Hackman Capital Partners for a reported $750 million.  In June 2018, the Conservancy successfully nominated and listed the studio as a Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM). Previously the Conservancy worked with this owner and their consultant team on the Culver Studios project.

As contemplated as part of the HCM process, there will be the opportunity for portions (not covered by the HCM) of the large site to be redeveloped. The HCM designation will help guide future development on the site while retaining its historic and character-defining features.

The Conservancy worked very closely with CBS on the HCM nomination, and their leadership came out in full support. Thank you to all who supported this effort, especially former Councilmember David Ryu at the time.

December 2017

In December 2017, the Conservancy submitted the nomination to designate the storied CBS Television City complex as a Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM) following news in September that CBS Corporation was potentially interested in marketing the 25-acre property. The announcement of a potential sale had raised widespread concern over the fate of the architecturally and culturally significant campus, which was identified as National Register-eligible in Los Angeles’ SurveyLA.

TV City marks 70 years of iconic shows

television city tours

Elvis Presley shook things up at Television City in 1956 when he appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” (photo courtesy of CBS TV City)

Carol Burnett, Sonny and Cher, Art Linkletter. These television icons are just some of the headliners gracing the small screen over the last 70 years.

Television City, at the corner of Beverly Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, plans to open the curtains soon on a year-long series of events to recognize the milestone anniversary and showcase the venerable studio’s past, present and future. Stay tuned.

“I’m going to refrain from sharing too many details just to build a little bit of suspense, but suffice it to say, there will be a series of events over the next year to showcase the people and the work that goes into making these productions that have become so beloved, that have come out of Television City, and finding ways of getting the community more able to peek behind the curtain, as it were, at what actually happens at Television City,” said Zach Sokoloff, senior vice president with Hackman Capital Partners, owner of Television City. “Because this has been a staple of the Beverly-Fairfax District for seven decades.”

The Television City site has long been a center for entertainment in Los Angeles. Prior to the studio opening in 1952, the site boasted Gilmore Stadium, which hosted auto racing, football games and boxing matches. When New York-based CBS Television was looking for a new place to build a studio in Los Angeles in the late 1940s, the broadcasting company purchased the 25-acre property at Beverly Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue from the A.F. Gilmore Company, owner of the Farmers Market, and began construction on a new production facility in 1949.

The architectural firm Pereira and Luckman was hired to design the new facility, which was envisioned as the world’s first comprehensive television production studio where shows could be produced from start to finish. The idea was to create a “city,” said Michael Klausman, longtime president of Television City.

“I think it’s a tribute to the people who designed it and built it – it was way ahead of its time. It was probably the only facility at that time built for the single purpose of doing television shows. And, obviously, they did something right, because over the years, it has lived up to that design. We’ve made improvements along the way and kept up with technology. But it was designed for a purpose, and obviously, that same purpose we’re using it for today, and people still keep coming back.”

Klausman said the idea was revolutionary at the time, when television was still a fledgling but rapidly expanding medium.

“What was unique about it was most of the studios around town or across the country were just stand alone studios. TV City was designed to be a city,” Klausman added. “So when you come to TV City, you could bring a script, and from that point on, we take over. We’ll build the scenery, we provide the wardrobe for the show, the props, we provide the lighting and grip equipment and everything else. That’s taken care of, so you’re at a one-shop stop when you come here. That’s what it was designed for, which is unique, and it’s still unique in the business.”

Klausman’s first experience with the studio came when he was in second grade, when he appeared as a contestant on “Art Linkletter’s Kids Say the Darndest Things.”

“I guess that kind of paved the path for my career,” he added. “I started in 1971 as a page on ‘All In The Family’ and ‘Maude’ and ‘Sonny and Cher’ and ‘Glen Campbell,’ I was an usher. And from that point on, it’s just been a matter of being in the right place at the right time, working hard. I’ve seen [Television City] develop since 1971.”

Klausman cited the many iconic television shows that were taped at the studio over the years, and the many famous actors and actresses. He said Carol Burnett was among the most memorable. Her show was taped at the studio for 11 years from 1967-78. He also cited the historic significance of an appearance by Elvis Presley on “The Ed Sullivan Show” taped at the studio in 1956, and an appearance by The Beatles on Sullivan’s show in 1965.

“We did a lot of musical things back then, there was a lot of singing and dancing,” Klausman said. “Groups like The Beatles, you know, stuff that you wouldn’t even think about back then but who later became famous. They were just up and coming [at the time]. We had a lot of big talent on the stages.”

television city tours

Over the years, Television City has produced a laundry list of famous television shows, such as “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour,” “The Merv Griffin Show,” “The Dinah Shore Show” and “The Mike Douglas Show” in the early days, and later “All In The Family,” “Sanford and Son,” “The Jeffersons” and “Three’s Company.” Andy Griffith, Dionne Warwick and Dick Van Dyke taped specials at Television City, and Tom Hanks produced his feature “That Thing You Do” at the studio.

Television City is also home to “The Price Is Right,” the longest running game show in television history. Venerable daytime television shows such as “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful” are also produced at the studio. In recent years, “American Idol,” “Dancing With the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance” have called Television City home, as well as the “Late Late Show With James Corden,” which is currently taped at the studio.

Klausman said one of the most memorable programs ever produced at the studio was “America: A Tribute to Heroes,” a special program that aired on CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It was organized by actor George Clooney and raised money for the victims and their families.

“He did this tribute to heroes on two stages, 36 and 46, and every star possible was here, every politician was here, the mayor and all the police were here, we even had the Marines,” Klausman said. “I don’t know who else could do it. That one broadcast was live simultaneously on radio, every channel, every cable system … we had everything coming out of this one place. That’s the kind of thing that we are capable of doing. We were the spot for that evening on air.”

Sokoloff said Hackman Capital Partners plans to preserve the studio’s legacy for years to come, and a plan to dramatically expand the studio and build more sound stages is currently making its way through the city planning process. The plan calls for the historic elements of the property including its façade and covered entrance off Beverly Boulevard to be preserved and made more visible to passersby. Klausman and Sokoloff said people make the studio, and that includes audience members who visit for show tapings, as well neighbors and people in the surrounding community. They invite people to visit the studio and experience it for themselves.

“At the end of the day, it really is the people who have come through the studio who have made it what it is,” Sokoloff said. “The talent above the line [and] the below the line crew, the audience members, the visitors and the local residents who count Television City as their neighbor, and who are proud to have the studio and this piece of Hollywood and culture be so vibrant in the Beverly-Fairfax District.”

Television City will recognize its 70th anniversary at a private party on Dec. 8 for staff and employees. Sokoloff added that the studio has been promoting its anniversary on social media, and he encouraged people interested in upcoming public celebrations, or learning more about the studio, to visit televisioncityla.com.

“We maintain an active social media presence that highlights the events that we host onsite, and they can also visit our website, where we promote other opportunities to get involved at the studio, and the broader community outreach and engagement process that we are conducting on an ongoing basis,” Sokoloff added. “As these events become public, we will conduct a more formal publicity campaign launch around each of them. We hope it is something everyone will enjoy.”

Classic film lovers: See James Dean’s apartment and more on new TCM tour at Warner Bros.

In 2021, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour created new interactive exhibits focused on the company’s recent history, unveiling areas dedicated to the DC Comics universe and the “Harry Potter” franchise.

This week, the popular Studio Tour in Burbank is doubling down on its more distant past.

Warner Bros. is now offering a Turner Classic Movies-branded version of its studio tour that will bring guests to previously off-limit areas of the lot, including vintage animation buildings, a mini rose garden and an apartment that once housed James Dean. The 90-minute tram portion of the jaunt — about 30 minutes longer than the studio’s standard tram excursion — will allow guides to go deeper into the history of the studio’s catalog to deliver factoids related to such films as “Casablanca,” “My Fair Lady,” “Rebel Without a Cause,” “Auntie Mame” and many more.

“We’re off the leash,” says Brad Taylor, a 15-year tour guide veteran with Warner Bros., noting that the TCM excursion will include time for guides to chat with visitors about their favorite films.

The TCM hosts are seen on on the Warner Bros. backlot.

“We get to talk to the guests and really hang out with people who have the same passion that we do,” Taylor says. “I find that ‘classics’ guests are less about behind-the-scenes and more, ‘I can’t believe this is where we are.’ It’s just the look on their faces when they realize ‘Casablanca’ filmed here, or James Dean stood right here.”

The launch of the TCM tour arrives during the network’s 30th anniversary and close to 12 months after classic film fans were given a scare. In June, Warner Bros. announced that layoffs would hit TCM, including some of the network’s top executives, prompting concern from prestige directors such as Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson and Martin Scorsese. After garnering national attention, key cuts were reversed and Warner Bros. sought to assure fans that TCM would continue to be handled with care.

Fears about TCM’s decline

Long live TCM! Our culture would be worse off without movies on TV

Without Turner Classic Movies and other channels for movies on TV, we’d lose the instructive pleasures of the happy accident, the unexpected discovery.

Aug. 1, 2023

TCM network hosts — Eddie Muller, Jacqueline Stewart, Ben Mankiewicz, Alicia Malone and Dave Karger — recorded new video segments for the outing. The tour will take guests into the lot’s Property House, an area not visited by the standard tour. Here, visitors can get glimpses of materials for a full set, including items for a complete Oval Office setting, but expect guides to highlight vintage items, such as a throne from the Errol Flynn pirate film “Captain Blood.”

Danny Kahn, vice president-general manager of the studio tour, says there have been numerous requests over the years from guests to delve a little deeper into the studio’s animation history. That’s why the TCM tour will for the first time take visitors to an area of the lot once known as “Termite Terrace,” which from 1955 to 1964, says Taylor, housed the animation department, a building with a sloped roof designed to capture sunlight. Animation legend Chuck Jones, says Kahn, had an office in the Termite Terrace area in the 1990s despite Warner’s moving animation production elsewhere.

How the Universal Studios tram tour defined the modern theme park

The most important theme park ride ever created? It may just be the Universal Studios tram tour, which dates to the silent film era. Once primarily a behind-the-scenes tour, the trek has evolved to define the modern theme park.

Aug. 3, 2023

Another unique tour locale is the exterior of the Dean apartment. When Dean resided there during filming of “East of Eden,” it was actually across the street from the lot, the apartment nesting above a pharmacy. But gradual studio expansion has led to the area now being on Warner Bros. property.

“That was an actual drugstore with apartments, and the studio rented it for him,” Kahn says. “I think it was to keep an eye on him and keep him on a short leash.”

The tour will also give tram riders a look at executive life at the studio, allowing them to briefly walk around a rose garden. The manicured spaces once held a tennis court as well as offices and personal screening rooms for the likes of studio mogul Jack Warner, with many of the structures dating to the 1920s. “It’s a really historic area of the lot that hasn’t really changed a lot in all these years,” says Kahn, noting the area is still in use by studio principals. “Jack Warner, when he ran the studio, privatized the first floor. That was a massage parlor that he had beneath his office.”

TCM Classic Films Tour

Where: The Warner Bros. Studio, 3400 Warner Blvd., Burbank 91505

When: Most days, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Cost: $95 for adults; $82 for children. A SoCal resident discount is available for $75

Info: (818) 977-8687 or wbstudiotour.com

Staples of the tour, such as a journey around the backlot city streets, a visit to the “Friends” set and cafe and recent additions highlighting the studio’s modern franchise films are included in the TCM trek, as is a pre-tour reception with beverages and pastries. All told, expect the tour to last about 3½ hours. A tour spokesperson says the first TCM-branded outing is scheduled for Wednesday, with trams expected to depart daily after that date. Adult tickets are $95, but there is a Southern California resident discount available for $75.

“It feels so good to have TCM here,” Kahn says. “People understand that the TCM brand is synonymous with classic film.”

CBS TELEVISION CITY RESEARCH CENTER DESCRIPTION

Ever thought you could do the job of a network executive, deciding which shows are put on the air and which ones end up in the waste bin?

Network jobs are hard to come by, but you can weigh in on the decision-making process by letting your opinions be known at the CBS Television City Research Center at MGM Grand.

You could find a gem, such as the pilot to a great new series -- or you could get a rip-off of a current show (we won't name names here). Half the fun, though, is the anticipation.

Participation is quite effortless. Viewers can pick up tickets in front of the research center. They then register at the counter in front of the center and line up about 10 minutes before their scheduled time.

Five minutes before the screening begins, viewers are led into one of four studios to watch the latest offerings from CBS, MTV, Nickelodeon and other Viacom networks (the television-holdings giant manages the research center).

Viewers then are instructed on how to use the test pads and monitors to register their opinions, and settle into the viewing process.

The show's length will determine the time of the testing process. A survey following the program lasts about 15 minutes, so viewers should expect an hour for an hour-long show (actually 45 minutes, as it is shown with no commercials). And since everything is done through touch screen, you won't have to worry about your hand cramping up from writing.

The attraction also offers testing for commercials, websites and technology-based products. Products tested in the past included Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, Apple iPhone and Dell notebook computers.

Television City also offers souvenirs for its viewers. In its store you'll find merchandise like T-shirts, caps, pins, keychains and even computer software from popular shows like "Survivor," "C.S.I," "SpongeBob Squarepants" and more. Most items range from $18 to $20, but check the clearance rack for deals.

Visitors also have a chance to enter a drawing for a state-of-the-art home-theater system by joining Television City's entertainment panel, which will send items for review -- such as commercials and pilot programs -- to participants' homes. Drawings are held every three months.

Even if you get a dud, the process still is a fun one. Just think, you'll be able to tell studio executives exactly what you think about that moronic character. No matter what show you get, TV junkies will want to come back again and again.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

City of Savannah discusses potential of new ordinance for trolley tours and horse drawn carriages

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The city of Savannah may have a new outlook on trolley busses and horse drawn carriages.

This comes after city council members discussed both of these issues in a workshop earlier today.

When it comes to trolley tours, city officials say they’ve received a lot of complaints coming from residents and the Downtown Neighborhood Association over things like noise and traffic.

With tourism being a driving factor here for the city, bringing in about 9.7 million overnight visitors in 2022, city officials say they’re looking to find a balance between keeping Savannah a place tourists will want to visit, and making sure residents have a good quality of life.

Right now, they say they’ve changed some of the trolley routes, addressing concerns coming from the Washington Square area.

Council members also discussed the potential for a new ordinance, one that would require tour vehicles to use directional speakers or in-ear technologies to keep their tour narration quieter.

When looking at the potential for this ordinance, city leaders say there’s a lot to consider.

“You have to look at local businesses, local residents, tourism businesses, non-tourism businesses, and make sure that you can come up with ordinances and policies that address the issues but also support and foster those, because the tourism economy is important to our community,” said Susan Broker, Senior Director of Special Events, Film and Tourism, City of Savannah.

“We’re looking to bring an ordinance to city council in the next four weeks,” Broker added.

Also in today’s workshop, council members discussed horse drawn carriages.

They’re looking at three different options: keeping the existing ordinance, adding new restrictions for severe weather or adding weight limits, or getting rid of horse drawn carriages all together.

Again, something city officials say they’re continuing learn more about, hearing from people on all sides of the issue.

“We have in place a task force of the advocacy groups and the horse drawn carriages. We’re in active communication with both groups right now. We’ll continue that conversation, we’ll come back to council with more information so that they can make a more informed decision,” Broker said.

Just to emphasize, no decisions were made on either of these topics, council members simply discussed them to see how they feel conversations should continue to move forward.
