Tincup Whiskey Didn’t Reinvent the Wheel, But It Did Reinvent the Bottle

The brand’s new “Adventure Pack” is meant to go where glass can’t — or shouldn’t.

For all the new types, varieties and brands of whiskey that seem to roll out every year, there’s one aspect of them that doesn’t change: the bottle. Sure, the glass may be blown, poured and shaped into various designs, but generally speaking, it’s silicate holding your booze in place in your closet.

Stop to think about it for a second, though — perhaps over a glass of your favorite scotch or bourbon — and you might start to wonder … why ?

collage of three bottles of whiskey

After all, it’s not like liquor is bound by divine right to exist in glass vessels. It’s born in metal stills and aged in wooden barrels, consumed through paper straws and from plastic cups. Well before humans mastered the art of turning sand into hard, transparent material, we poured wine out of goat skins and sipped it from the golden chalices of kings and the clay cups of carpenters. Sure, it’s handy to be able to see what’s inside — both to measure quality and quantity — but with that comes the fragility of dealing with a substance known far and wide for being easy to break and dangerously sharp once it does.

So, as the folks at Tincup Whiskey of Colorado decided to ask … why not try making a whiskey bottle out of metal?

Tincup Whiskey Adventure Pack: What We Think

It’s rare that the container, not the spirit, is the marquee attraction with a bottle of booze, but that’s certainly the case here. The liquor — Tincup’s bourbon-based American whiskey, a blend of 65 percent corn, 32 percent rye, and 4 percent malted barley with notes of caramel and other slightly sweet flavors — is solid at its traditional price point, though here you’ll pay significantly extra for the bottle.

Still, between its superior toughness and aesthetically appealing design, it’s a fun choice for taking places where you’d be worried about glass shattering like on a hike or camping trip, or giving as a gift for a whiskey-loving outdoorsy person — even if its price might have the practicality-first crowd consider using a large flask instead.

The bottle is a handsome piece of work

There’s no denying the fact that the Adventure Cup bottle certainly stands out amongst the sea of browns at the liquor store, in no small part because, well, you can’t see any brown liquid. Instead, it’s a subtle mix of a light blue — almost turquoise — body with gunmetal silver accents for the logo and cap. It’s a very appealing look that helps make this liquor — which Tincup sources from MGP in Indiana, like many a whiskey brand does — a bit more unique.

tincup whiskey adventure pack

It’s handier than your average liquor bottle

The biggest advantage, obviously, is that steel is a tougher material than glass. Tincup is very much all about the adventurous Colorado lifestyle — hence, for example, why their bottles are trapezoidal, not round; it’s to keep them from rolling down steep slopes if they tip over — and the last thing leave-no-trace outdoors folks climbing fourteeners want to do is leave behind a patch of shattered glass to besmirch the natural environment.

The Adventure Pack’s ace, then, is that it’s nigh-on indestructible, at least as far as whiskey bottles go. Drop it on the rocks, and where most bottles would shatter, it simply bounces. Sure, it might score a dent or a scuff, but hey, that just adds character. Hell, you could even use it for target practice once it’s empty and you’ve sobered up. (As always, do not mix shooting and liquor .)

Plus, like many a Tincup bottle, it comes with its own shot glass screwed over the top, which both provides extra protection to keep the mouth from being dinged up and gives you a handy vessel from which to pound a shot for courage before you leave the tent to find out if that sound you heard was the wind or a grizzly bear.

collage of three whiskey bottles

You pay the iron steel price for it

tincup whiskey adventure pack

$30 for a bottle of whiskey is far from an unreasonable price, at first blush; after all, a regular bottle of Tincup’s American Whiskey costs $33 for a fifth . But the Adventure Pack isn’t a fifth; at 375 milliliters, it’s half that size. If you already have a big, tough flask — for example GSL Outdoors Boulder Flasks , our sturdy camping-friendly 10-oz. pick for the best affordable flask — then you might be better off on filling it up at home before you hit the trail.

Still, that would require a good deal more forethought than you might need if you’re stocking up for a camping trip and realize you ought to bring some sippin’ whiskey. Plus, hey, that wouldn’t be as unique — and wouldn’t make for as good a conversation piece around the campfire.

*Note: An earlier version of this story indicated the bottle was made of aluminum, not steel.

Altoids Survival Kit: What to Pack in a Pocket-Size Emergency Kit

You can fit plenty of life-saving survival tools in this small tin. Here's how it's done

By Craig Caudill | Published Sep 18, 2023 12:00 PM EDT

survival tools that go inside an Altoids survival kit

We’ve all heard the phrase, “It’s better to be safe than sorry,” but how can one be adequately prepared for unforeseen events without lugging around a hefty survival kit int their backpack? The answer might be in your pocket. Enter the Altoids Survival Kit. It’s small, compact, and unassuming, but inside this tiny tin lies the potential to be the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major problem.

This article will walk you through the educational process of transforming an everyday tin into a valuable tool for survival situations. Let’s break down pocket-sized preparedness and learn how to assemble an Altoids survival kit.

What Is an Altoids Survival Kit?

Believe it or not, an Altoids tin, when packed thoughtfully, can hold many essential survival items. This compact container can be a lifeline in emergencies, from fishing lines to fire starters. Whether you’re a hiker, a camper, or just someone who likes to be prepared, this guide will show you how to assemble your Altoids survival kit.

What Goes Inside a Mini Survival Kit

Here is a list of the gear that I include in my Altoids survival kit. As you assemble your kit, you can make changes or substitutions to best suit your needs

  • Mini Multi-tool: I prefer a well-engineered mini multi-tool . These tools can be tasked to do some critical work. I want an excellent name-brand tool I can count on and not some cheap knockoff.
  • Small Compass: Button compasses are hit or miss with their accuracy. Whenever you get one, check it regularly to verify it still points correctly. (Looking for a compass? Check out our list of the best compasses .)
  • Ferrocerium Rod: I save some space in the tin by choosing a ferro rod that does not have a handle. I place a small rubber grip on one end to help hold onto it.
  • Fire Starters: There is no shortage of great fire starters on the market. I like the dried ones so the accelerant does not leak off under heat in the tin.
  • Fishing Lines and Hooks: Fishing, even for small fish, is a great way to get nutrients and passively get your food.
  • Whistle: The sound of a whistle travels farther than your voice, and does not require you to expend as much energy.
  • Duct Tape: Duct tape has a ton of uses, such as for first aid coverings, trail markers, or holding your shoes together. Great stuff to have for many uses.
  • Water Purification Tablets: If you can only take one thing to help purify water , take tablets, not a filter. Tablets help sterilize more contaminants than does a filter.
  • Aluminum Foil: Use this as a signaling device, to boil water, or hold food.
  • Water Bags: Use the bags as a collection tool to hold water so you can purify it with the tablets.
  • Wire or Kevlar Wire: Much like duct tape, the uses for this are endless: It works as fishing line, it’s useful in constructing a survival shelter, it even works as boot laces. Whatever you can use cordage for, this can do it—and lasts a very long time.
  • Survival Guide: I recommend some small guide to keep with your tin. Great way to learn before you need to use it. It is best to be prepared ahead of time with it. Plus, if needed, it can be burned as a fire tinder.
  • Large Rubber Bands/Inner Tube: A great way to hold the tin together so it does not spill. They can also be used as fire tinder.

How to Pack Your Altoids Survival Kit

To pack an Altoids survival kit well, first keep in mind that the tin has rounded corners and a flat bottom and sides. I know this is rather obvious, but it will help you to pack it efficiently.

packing survival gear into an Altoids tin.

Start packing your Altoids survival kit with the flat items placed them on the bottom: duct tape, aluminum foil, water purification tablets, and a flat whistle go well on the bottom of the Altoids tin. You can then place the ferro rod along one of the edges. These other items help hold it in place.

placing survival gear into a small survival kit

Next, take anything rounded and place it in the rounded corners of the Altoids survival kit. Things like the spool for fishing line, button compass, and similar items will nestle into those rounds and not leave unused space.  Now, you can place the remaining items in any way you can fit them. I like to put the fire-starting cotton items on top because they can easily be pushed down to hold everything tightly when the lid is placed on. I did not do it on this tin, but you can also tape things like cordage or similar to the inside top of the lid so it gets pulled up and out of the way when the lid is opened.

An Altoids tin full of survival gear.

Using the Tin as a Survival Tool

Let’s not forget the uses of the tin itself in your Altoids survival kit. A tin like this is helpful because you can use it in a fire, and it holds up well to repeated use in this way. And while the tin can’t hold a lot of water, you can also boil enough water in order to get you some sterilized water that avoids most bacterial contamination. In a survival situation, one of the best strategies is to stay in place and wait for help. So, having a fire that you sit, watch, and boil several tins full of water is not a problem.

Rubber band is secured around an Altoids tin.

Secondly, you can use the inside cover of the Altoids tin as a signaling device. If you take some sand or the multi-tool and scratch that surface, it will be even brighter than it already is. Use it to reflect light to show others your position. This is true of both air and ground searchers.

Lastly, you can use your Altoids survival kit to make charred material to aid in fire starting. Char cloth and other materials are organic materials heated to near combustion but not to the critical burn point. This means you have a thin piece of charcoal to catch a spark and then blow into flame using a tinder bundle. To do this, place anything organic like dried grass, punk wood, or even cotton clothing pieces in the empty tin. Place it in an already burning fire. There is enough oxygen that can pass through the opening of the tin that it starts to char.  However, there is not enough oxygen for it to become consumed in flame. You will see smoke coming from the tin. Pull the flame out and close it tighter if you see the flame. After the smoking slows down, pull it from the fire and let it cool. Inside, you will have an excellent tinder starter.

What do you put in a survival tin?

All survival situations should prioritize personal safety, shelter, warmth, water, then food. There is not enough room for shelter in a tin, but the others can be easily assembled. Navigation items like the compass to keep you from getting lost and a whistle to help you be found. Fire-starting materials for warmth. Then, the items you need for emergency water purification and storage. With hooks and cordage, you can gather food. The survival guide helps you improvise in many ways to help take care of your other needs.

What is the use of an Altoids tin?

Tins were used in frontier days to hold items like tobacco, char cloth, flint steel, and more. Who knows how this whole tin box movement in modern times got started, but it is an excellent way to introduce the topic of pocket survival tools to others. What is great about an Altoids survival kit is that it allows us to discuss different needs in survival situations. Ask any two people what is in theirs, and you will get two different answers.

Why are condoms sometimes in survival kits?

Condoms are versatile. They can store up to a gallon of water when carefully filled. They’re also waterproof, making them ideal for protecting matches, tinder, or other small items from moisture. I typically carry water bags for the same reason, only because they can be rolled or laid flat in the tin. This allows for better packing scenarios.

What is in a mini survival kit?

A mini survival kit typically includes essential emergency tools and items compact enough to fit in a pocket. This can range from fire-starting materials, fishing gear, a mini knife, and first-aid items to water purification tablets.

How should a mini survival kit be used?

These kits should not be considered your go-to kit for survival needs. They do serve a great purpose in a pinch. They are compact enough to throw in a pocket, glove box, tackle box, or a pack to help in unexpected circumstances. Plus, they meet the trifecta of survival supplies: they don’t cost much, weigh much, or take up much space.

Everything You Need To Know About Tin Packaging

Tin packaging has been a staple in various industries for decades, offering durability, versatility, and a touch of nostalgia. From food products to cosmetics and beyond, tin packaging continues to be a popular choice for manufacturers and consumers alike.

In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into everything you need to know about tin packaging. We will explore its benefits, applications, environmental impact, and more. So, let's dive in and discover the fascinating world of tin packaging!

The History of Tin Packaging

The history of tin packaging dates back to the early 19th century when the process of canning food was first developed. It was initially inspired by the need to preserve food for long journeys and military expeditions. In 1810, Peter Durand, a British merchant, patented the process of sealing food in tin-plated iron cans, which became known as tin cans. The invention gained significant recognition when Bryan Donkin and John Hall opened the world's first commercial canning factory in London in 1813. This marked the beginning of the widespread use of tin cans for packaging various goods.

Over the years, advancements in tin packaging technology continued to evolve. In the mid-19th century, American industrialist Ezra J. Warner improved the manufacturing process by developing machinery that could produce seamless cans, making the containers more efficient and cost-effective. In 1901, William Lyman developed a method to produce thinner and lighter tin-coated steel cans, reducing material usage while maintaining durability. This innovation led to increased popularity and affordability of tin packaging.

As the 20th century progressed, other materials such as aluminum and plastics began to replace tin in certain packaging applications, but tin cans remained a staple in the food and beverage industry due to their ability to protect products from external factors such as light, oxygen, and moisture. Today, tin packaging continues to be widely used, offering a durable and reliable solution for preserving and distributing a variety of goods.

Advantages of Tin Packaging

Tin packaging offers a multitude of advantages that make it an attractive choice for businesses and consumers. Let's explore some of the key benefits:

Tin is a robust and sturdy material that provides excellent protection for the packaged contents. It can withstand external pressures and is resistant to corrosion, ensuring the integrity of the product inside.

Versatility

Tin packaging can be shaped into various forms, including cans, boxes, and containers, making it suitable for a wide range of products. Its versatility allows for creative and eye-catching designs that enhance brand appeal.

Tin packaging exudes a timeless charm and elegance. It can be decorated with vibrant colors, embossed patterns, and intricate designs, making it visually appealing and enticing to consumers.

Product Shelf Life

Tin packaging provides an effective barrier against light, moisture, and oxygen, which can degrade the quality of products. This extends the shelf life of perishable goods and helps maintain their freshness and flavor.

Different Types of Tin Packaging

Tin packaging comes in various forms to cater to different product requirements. Here are some common types of tin packaging:

  • Tin Cans: Tin cans are widely used for packaging food and beverages, such as canned fruits, vegetables, soups, and beverages. They offer airtight sealing, ensuring product safety and preventing contamination.
  • Tin Boxes: Tin boxes are commonly used for packaging luxury goods, such as chocolates, cosmetics, and gift items. They provide an elegant and sophisticated presentation while protecting the contents from external elements.
  • Tin Containers: Tin containers are versatile packaging solutions that can be used for a wide range of products, including spices, tea, coffee, and personal care items. They come in various shapes and sizes to accommodate different product volumes.

How is Tinplate Manufactured?

The process of creating tinplate is intricate, focusing on strength and longevity:

  • Steel Preparation: Raw steel is treated and cleaned, ensuring it's devoid of any impurities.
  • Cold Rolling: The cleaned steel is then passed through rollers at a very low temperature, which reduces its thickness.
  • Tinning: Post rolling, the steel sheets are submerged in molten tin, allowing for a uniform coat.
  • Refining: After tinning, the sheets undergo a finishing process which often includes reflowing, ensuring a smooth surface.

Applications of Tin Packaging

Tin packaging finds application in numerous industries due to its functional and aesthetic qualities. Here are some examples of its diverse uses:

  • Food and Beverage Industry: Tin cans are extensively used for food packaging like canned fruits, vegetables, seafood, soups, and beverages. They ensure product safety , facilitate easy storage, and offer convenience to consumers.
  • Personal Care and Cosmetics: Tin packaging is popular in the personal care industry for products like lip balms, solid perfumes, and solid shampoos. The compact and portable nature of tin containers makes them ideal for travel and on-the-go use.
  • Confectionery and Gourmet Foods: Tin boxes are often employed for packaging chocolates, cookies, candies, and gourmet food items. The attractive designs and reusable nature of tin boxes make them a favorite choice for gifts and premium products.

Environmental Sustainability

In an era of growing environmental consciousness, the sustainability of packaging materials is a significant concern. Tin packaging stands out as an environmentally friendly option due to the following reasons:

Recyclability

Tin is a highly recyclable material, which means that it can be processed and reused multiple times without loss of quality. Recycling tin packaging helps conserve resources and reduce waste.

Low Carbon Footprint

The production of tin packaging involves relatively low energy consumption compared to other materials. This contributes to a lower carbon footprint, making it a more sustainable choice.

Extended Product Shelf Life

Tin packaging's ability to protect products from external factors helps reduce food waste. By preventing spoilage and extending shelf life, it minimizes the environmental impact associated with food wastage.

Customization Options

Tin packaging offers ample opportunities for customization, allowing brands to stand out and create a unique identity. Some popular customization options include:

  • Embossing and Debossing: Intricate patterns, logos, and text can be embossed or debossed onto tin packaging, adding depth and tactile appeal.
  • Printing: Tin packaging can be printed with high-quality graphics, illustrations, and branding elements to convey a brand's message effectively.
  • Window Cutouts: Window cutouts on tin packaging provide a sneak peek of the product inside, enticing customers with a glimpse of its quality and appeal.
  • Special Finishes: Various finishes like matte, gloss, or textured coatings can be applied to tin packaging to create different visual and tactile effects.

How to Properly Store Tin Containers

To ensure the longevity and quality of tin packaging, proper storage practices are essential. Here are some guidelines for storing tin-packaged products:

  • Temperature Control: Tin packaging should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. This helps maintain the integrity of the packaging and the product inside.
  • Avoid Moisture: Tin packaging should be kept away from moisture and humidity, as it can cause corrosion and damage to the packaging material.
  • Stack Carefully: When storing multiple tin-packaged items, it is important to stack them carefully to prevent crushing or deformation of the packaging.

Common Misconceptions about Tin Packaging

Despite its widespread use, tin packaging is often associated with misconceptions. Let's debunk some of the common myths:

  • Tin Packaging is Harmful: Tin packaging is safe for food contact and has undergone rigorous testing to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Tin Packaging is Costly: While tin packaging can be more expensive than some other materials, its durability, longevity, and recyclability justify the investment.
  • Tin Packaging is Outdated: Far from being outdated, tin packaging continues to be a popular choice due to its timeless appeal, versatility, and sustainability.

Tin packaging continues to captivate us with its charm, functionality, and sustainability. Its rich history, versatility, and ability to protect and enhance products make it an excellent choice for various industries. From food preservation to cosmetic elegance, tin packaging has stood the test of time.

So, whether you're a brand looking to make an impact or a consumer seeking quality and style, consider the benefits of tin packaging. It's a packaging solution that combines tradition with innovation, ensuring that your products make a lasting impression.

After moving to California and having used your Breez Royal Mints for a few months, I have been able to get off all 12 of oral meds I was taking, and I just started reducing my implanted morphine pump dose too.”

“This might be TMI but Breez totally cured my period cramps!”

California is one of the top travel destinations in the world. As the most visited state in the USA, California boasts an incredible, diverse landscape and culture and it can feel like a country all in itself.  And though the coastal region boasts nearly year-round great weather, it is still a state that can see you surfing in the morning and skiing by the afternoon. Because of all the possibilities in this beautiful western state, it can be hard to figure out the perfect California packing list.

Though it certainly doesn’t matter what time of year you choose to visit California, it can still be hard to figure out what to pack for a California road trip. If you’re embarking on an epic California coastal itinerary , driving inland to places like Yosemite or spending a few days on Lake Tahoe and need to know what to bring, look no further.

Table of Contents

Things to consider when packing for California

California is blessed with essentially year-round great weather and so you never need to bring anything too bulky with you no matter if you’re visiting in the height of summer or the dead of winter. However, there are some seasonal nuances that can be worth knowing before you start compiling your California packing list.

If you are sticking to the most popular coastal drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles (or vice versa!), then it is worth knowing that the weather is pleasant and mild throughout the year and rarely will it ever be too hot or too cold. This is fantastic news if you are looking to pack light, which is what we would recommend. This is also the case if you’re primarily sticking to Southern California.

If you’re planning a trip to California in the winter months, it is worth knowing that this is the rainiest of seasons and it is likely that you will get a few wet days. Although California has a reputation for perpetually basking in glorious sunshine, this isn’t always the case.

While California certainly has a lot of sunny days, don’t expect there not to be rain, particularly if you’re heading to Northern California and make sure you pack accordingly. A lightweight rain jacket and an umbrella can be your best friends if you’re visiting California in winter. However, they can be just as welcome to have even if you’re travelling in the dryer summer months.

If you are visiting in summer, it can be tempting only to pack shorts, T-shirts, and sandals in your bag, however, you should also make sure that you have a pair or two of jeans and a light jacket . Though the days can be very sunny, dry, and warm, nights can get quite chilly even in the summer and a jacket and long pants can be a very welcome addition to your packing list.

The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco at sunset

Another thing to make sure you have in the sunnier months is sunscreen . The sunshine on the California coast can be very strong and if you don’t lather on the SPF you will leave your trip with an unwelcome souvenir — a sunburn!

All in all, make sure you pay attention to the weather averages for where you’re visiting in California and be sure to pack accordingly.

Part of the beauty of figuring out which things to bring to California has to do with the fact that you don’t need to worry about big bulky clothing in the winter or unbearably hot summers. You do, however, need to be prepared for freak weather conditions that might be thrown your way.

If you want to pack light or carry-on only, then maybe only bring things that directly correspond with the season you are visiting in. That means maybe don’t bring a rain jacket and a bulky umbrella if you’re visiting in the summer. If there is rain in the forecast, you can pick up items like that when you are there.

Essential California Packing List

So without further ado, these are the things that you should bring on a coastal California trip. Obviously, if you’re visiting in the winter months and want to go skiing or enjoy some of the mountain regions, this isn’t the packing list for you. However, if you’re going to be cruising down the PCH no matter the season, here is what you should bring:

California is known for its trendy, and fashion-forward cities along with its laidback coastal style. While you will certainly see people dressed to the nines just for a day at the beach, it is just as easy to wander around wearing yoga pants and a relaxed t-shirt.

When choosing the clothing for your California packing list, pick some items in neutral colours that can easily be mixed and matched to create infinite different outfits.

  • If you’re travelling in the winter, I would suggest bringing 2 long-sleeve tops and 2 short-sleeve tops. Even if the average temperatures are chilly, there are bound to be a few beautiful, sunny days where you’ll want shorter sleeves. It is always best to have a mix in the winter.
  • If you’re visiting California in spring, summer, or fall, then pack 3 short-sleeve tops and 1 long-sleeve. Temperatures are warmer during these seasons and it’s likely you’ll want a t-shirt rather than a long-sleeved top most days.
  • I would suggest opting for a darker pair of jeans that can be dressed up or dressed down depending on the occasion or where you’re visiting.
  • For women, I would suggest finding a good pair of leggings or yoga pants that can be used for hikes. They pack down really small and are incredibly versatile. They are my go-to for hikes because of this
  • For men, finding a lightweight pair of hiking pants (also available on REI here ) is one of the best investments you could make. Ones that are convertible between pants are shorts are also a great idea. Find a well-fitting pair that could be transitioned to city-wear as well.
  • If you’re visiting in the warmer seasons, opt for 2 pairs of shorts. If you’re in California in the winter, one pair or no pairs should work just fine.
  • For women; if you plan to go to some nicer restaurants or on a classy wine tasting, it is always a good idea to have at least one nice outfit. I love Bluffworks dresses which are perfect for travel.
  • For men, I would recommend bringing at least one shirt (such as this Bluffworks Meridian Shirt ) with a collar and buttons that can be dressed up with a well-fitted pair of dark jeans for nicer places and events
  • I only bring one pair, but if you’re going for a longer trip and don’t want to stop to do laundry, then bring a second pair of pyjamas
  • Tank tops are great as a comfy top with pyjama pants, as a base layer on more chilly days, or to throw on if you’re going on a hike or to the beach.
  • If you’re planning on swimming and enjoying beach time while on your California vacation, then take two swimsuits. If you’re visiting in winter or aren’t a water fanatic, then only bring one.
  • One sports bra for hikes or if you want to do any active activities on your trip, and one regular bra for the rest of your bra needs!
  • The amount of socks and undies you choose to bring really depends on how often you want to do laundry because we all know that the last pair of clean undies means it’s going to be a washing day!

Viewpoint from a coastal walk at Big Sur

Though California is famed for its glorious, sunny weather, that doesn’t mean you can leave your jackets and sweaters at home.

Sure, you’re not going to need a huge parka or a heavy wool coat unless you’re visiting the Sierra Nevadas or Lake Tahoe in winter , however, you will still need a light jacket or two to make sure you’re comfortable. Here’s what you should bring;

  • This is the ultimate travel jacket, not just for California, but for everywhere in the world you might travel to. They are super light, will keep you warm and are quick to dry…perfect for a chilly evening or morning!
  • Though it doesn’t rain much in California, you should always make sure to travel with a solid waterproof or windproof jacket to keep you dry on the rare occasion that the sky opens up.
  • It is also available on REI here
  • If you’re visiting in the winter, a warm sweater is excellent to layer under your jacket while still looking smart. In the warmer seasons, a light cardigan is the perfect thing to throw on if there is a slight chill in the air, but not enough to need a proper jacket.
  • Also available on REI for women here or for men here

Viewpoint on the 17-mile drive in Monterey

  • You’re going to want to find a good pair of walking shoes that have nice support while still being lightweight and stylish.
  • Whether it’s wandering through the redwoods in Big Sur or hiking in Yosemite and other California national parks, there are seemingly infinite fantastic hiking opportunities in California. You’re going to want some solid hiking boots to make sure you can enjoy them!
  • They are also available on REI for women here or for men here
  • In winter, having a nice and practical pair of boots to stroll around cities is welcome, especially if the weather is a bit rainy. In the warmer months, having a well-supported pair of sandals (I like Birkenstocks) is an essential item for any packing list for California!
  • A pair of flip-flops is much needed for those inevitable days on the stunning California beaches!

Accessories

Not everything on your California road trip packing list is going to be clothing. Here are the accessories and miscellaneous things to bring to California:

  • Having a practical crossbody purse as a daypack while travelling is an essential item. For men, there are also a number of backpacks to choose from that you can keep your day-to-day items in.
  • Because you always want to be prepared if there happens to be a rainstorm!
  • No California trip is complete without at least some beach time. Bring one of these Turkish-style beach towels with you so you can be prepared for a beach day without taking up too much space in your bag.
  • Sunglasses are necessary even if you’re travelling in the winter. The California sun can be very strong, but you also want to look super cool as well 🙂
  • Though it seems very old school to take actual paper and pen, sometimes it’s nice to have a physical journal to jot down your thoughts while on your trip.
  • A hat is an essential item for California to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays, especially if you plan to spend any time on the water.
  • Avoid having to buy expensive bottled water and bring a reusable water bottle instead!
  • Handy for beach days to make it easy to carry small items
  • Packing cubes are an absolutely essential item to keep all of your things organised. They are especially useful on a California road trip where you’ll be moving from place to place frequently. They will make your life so much easier and keep you very organised while on the road.

Beach Boardwalk in Santa Cruz

Electronics

Choosing which electronics to take on any trip to California will depend on your own personal circumstances. However, if you can use the opportunity to take a break from devices and bring only essential electronics with you.

  • Depending on your passion for photography, the camera on your phone might be enough for your picture-taking needs in California. If you fancy yourself a bit of a photographer and want to take your photos to the next level, we recommend the Sony A6400  (along with one of these great travel lenses !) and a Joby GorillaPod Kit which is a fantastic lightweight tripod.
  • There are few things in life that are better than kicking back on the beach with a good book. A Kindle prevents you from having to haul a bunch of heavy books all over California and is an essential item for your packing list.
  • A power bank helps to give an extra charge to your smartphone or any other electronic devices that might need it on the go.
  • If you’re from outside of the US, make sure to buy one of these great prepaid SIM cards with data!
  • A good pair of headphones are also welcome when spending the day on the beach!

Sunset in Carmel, California

  • Shampoo/Conditioner in reusable bottles such as  GoToobs .
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Soap & Moisturiser
  • I like to limit myself to one lipstick, one eyeliner, mascara, a small eye shadow palette, foundation and a few brushes. I also bring facial cleansing wipes for makeup removal at the end of the day.
  • Contact Lenses/Solution
  • For any cuts or scrapes

Constructing the optimal California packing list doesn’t have to be difficult at all, just take the time to look at the weather and assess the items you need to bring with you. Try to pack light so you don’t have to worry about hauling heavy luggage across the Golden State!

Good tips as I am doing all 9 NPs in California. I don’t plan on camping in each of the parks and have already made reservations. I also love my kindle and take it hiking and backpacking. Thanks for the packing lists.

Hope you have a great trip, Ann!

Thanks for the packing tips Maggie. I won’t be hiking in California but I will be visiting San Diego San Francisco and Seattle all the way up in Washington state. I know I’m going to have a lot of different weather to deal with that’s why am doing my research before I go. Thanks again for your tips and I am a stray cat lover myself. LOL??

Thanks for your comment, Coco! Hope you have a great trip 🙂

The Golden Rules of Retirement Travel

By Stacey Lastoe

This is part of a collection of stories celebrating the many shapes retirement travel can take. Read more here.

Bonni and Bob Gumport travel regularly in their retirement. Not beholden to one short vacation a year (they average seven big ones), their compounding experience has allowed them to develop a code of rules by which they abide— tips and tricks to use wherever they go. After one too many of the small rooms common in boutique hotels, for example, they’ve cut them out entirely. Also out of the question are walking tours within two days of arrival in a new destination, as they prefer to settle in. Their daughter Lauren describes them as “pros on retiree travel,” but they are not the only ones with advice to give.

There are former museum curators who have learned not to overbook themselves; solo travelers who always learn a little of the local language. Adherence to anyone’s rules will never ensure a vacation free of hiccups, where no flight is ever delayed , every tour is worth the hours put in, and every meal sublime . But learning from others may improve your chances of a good time—even when things inevitably go sideways. We’ve spoken to over 20 retired travelers to hear how their Golden Years have informed the way that they travel. Below, find some of their savviest secrets for better trips.

1. Take a ride on the hop-on, hop-off bus tour

If she’s traveling in a city that offers one of those double-decker hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tours, Denver -based Heidi Burtoni, 65, who goes on multiple trips per year, is definitely stepping aboard. Burtoni says it’s a great way to figure out the rest of her itinerary, get tips from other travelers and the tour guide, and get a feel for the new city. “It’s the first thing I do to get the lay of the land,” says Burtoni. Her previous career in sales means the frequent solo traveler will “talk to anybody,” so these tours also open the door for socializing and making connections.

Know what to skip—“whether that means avoiding tourist traps, the most sweltering hours at fairs, or not putting yourself in danger by flagging a taxi when it's unsafe," says Lynn Zelevansky.

2. Figure out what to avoid

For Paul and Lynn Zelevansky (77 and 76, respectively), travel is less about hitting all the top spots and more about learning where not to go, “whether that means avoiding tourist traps, the most sweltering hours at fairs, or not putting yourself in danger by flagging a taxi when it’s unsafe.” They visit the Venice Biennale in fall, now, rather than at the opening, to avoid the worst of the crushes—it also helps them more effectively skirt the city's infamous pickpockets (Lynn's wallet was stolen on a crowded vaporetto ferry in 2022).

3. BYOTP (Bring Your Own Toilet Paper)

“Toilet paper in Europe is very scratchy … not good for sensitive parts,” says Florida native Karen Butera, an avid pickleball player who often travels with the sport in mind. Whenever overseas, she always travels with her own toilet paper. Butera, 66, is taking her granddaughter to see Taylor Swift in Paris this summer, and, yes, she will be packing TP—creature comforts are even more crucial on the road than they are at home.

4. Don’t overschedule

Packed-to-the-brim itineraries used to be J. Patrice Marandel’s MO, but these days, the former chief curator at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is more keen on scheduling “plenty of time for the unexpected.” Gone are the nonstop days with planned breakfasts, lunches, and dinners; instead, Marandel, 79, leaves room for the possibility of something unexpected and “exciting.” It often pays off.

5. Pack light

Buffalo, New York-based Lisa LaLonde, 74, and her travel companion Antoinette Judelsohn, 70, whom she’s been traveling with for over a decade, are pros at packing light . The pals can manage for a month on very little, relying on the versatility of black leggings and black tops, says LaLonde. The trick? Develop a travel uniform, bring just a few versions, and wash undergarments as necessary, says Judelsohn. Big suitcases stuffed to the brim with a ton of different outfits are more of a hassle than a luxury. “They’re a pain in the neck if you’re getting on a train or off a train … or moving from one city to another,” says LaLonde.

“Anybody and their brother with an RV travels on Sunday,” warns Jenelle Jones.

6. Don't get (too) excited

Judelsohn, a former teacher who met LaLonde when they worked together at the same school in Buffalo, has another travel rule that’s served her well: Letting go of expectations. “I never get excited about a trip,” says Judelsohn. Instead, the savvy traveler lets the excitement emerge based on what's in front of her in the moment.

7. Avoid traveling on Sundays

RVer Jenelle Jones, 64, is against traveling on Sundays. As she puts it, “anybody and their brother with an RV travels on Sunday.” Long weekend RVers who have to get back for work on Monday use Sundays to head home, so retired Jones, 64, simply avoids the day altogether. It's also, according to her, the “biggest day to get in an RV wreck”— yet another reason to sit back and relax. You have nowhere you need to be, after all. Take advantage.

8. Learn a few words of the local language

Charlotte Simpson , whose blog Traveling Black Widow documents her travels (100 countries and counting so far), says her number one travel rule is to learn a few key phrases—hello, goodbye, please, thank you—in the dominant language of the places she visits. Simpson says her efforts are always well received. “I just find, inevitably, it sort of stuns people when I even just say good morning.” Simpson, who prefers not to reveal her age, says she gets a lot out of bridging the language gap with just a few words: “It just makes people so friendly and so happy that you took this moment to learn [their language].”

9. Travel slower

When you cram too much into a single trip, “the whole experience just kind of becomes a blur,” say Gillian Batt, 43, and Stephanie Myers, 51, whose blog Our Freedom Years documents their early retirement and subsequent travels. The couple, who hail from Ontario, Canada, say staying in one place for an extended period of time helps them avoid travel burnout, keep costs low, and enjoy the whole experience more. All that rushing around on limited PTO? Well behind them.

Image may contain Clothing Hat Pants Adult Person Animal Canine Dog Mammal Pet Photography Coat and Jacket

For RVers like Norm, keeping things flexible is key.

10. Go your own way

The pandemic crystallized things for Kim Kelly Stamp , 65, and her wife Liz Schick, 62, who left it all behind and decided to travel around the country in a red 21-foot teardrop trailer. They’ve since gotten really good at going with the flow. “We know where we’re going to stay along the way, but we hold that really loosely and give ourselves the opportunity to make something else happen,” explains Stamp. This approach led them to Laurel, Mississippi, where the HGTV show Hometown —of which Stamp and Schick are big fans of, is based. Instead of following a regimented schedule, they followed their passion when the road forked, literally.

11. Keep an open heart and mind

In spite of being seasoned travelers, John and Bev Martin, 60, who started the RetirementTravelers site to share their journey with others, admit they still need to remind themselves that they can’t control everything. “We have to be patient and receptive to the lessons the world is trying to teach,” says the couple. One that keeps coming up? “Retirement is not the time to stop dreaming about new and different routes in life.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Shoe, Person, Hat, and Cup

12. Do your research

The Gumports appreciate getting a taste of the local culture wherever they are traveling, and they’re not opposed to tours or experiences that deliver on this front. But Bonni has a few words of advice: “If you’re looking at purchasing something that uses words such as ‘bespoke, artisanal, farm-to-table’ and more fluffy adjectives, make sure these experiences are as authentic as they sound.” Read reviews thoroughly and take the time to research before you buy, advises Bonni. It's fun to be spontaneous, but it's easy to be misled by clever marketing and buzzwords.

13. It’s a marathon—not a sprint

It wasn’t long before Brenda Huyhn adopted—and adapted— a popular van-lifer rule: Don’t travel more than 3 hours, get in by 3 p.m., and stay at least 3 nights. Huyhn, who at 47 retired earlier than many, is adamant about not trying to do too much in one day to avoid burnout. She and her husband take their time, prioritizing “quality over quantity” with their stops and stays. It makes the entire experience all the richer.

14. You can always head home

Diana Petterson is on track to hit the 100-country mark just in time for her 70th birthday in 2026. But as much as the Black solo traveler loves seeing the world, she’s not afraid to ditch a trip if something isn’t working out. “Wherever I am in the world, if for whatever reason I am uncomfortable, or I don't feel well … I’m going to plop down that credit card , and get home.”

15. Start the day early to avoid the crowds

Artist Simma Liebman, 76, enjoys going to museums while visiting new cities and places. But since the retiree is immunocompromised, she plans these outings a little differently. Now Liebman hits the museums “as early in the day as possible” and masks up while taking in the art "unless there are very few people inside.” Whatever your motivation, rising early is something you can be sure the hordes of 20-something backpackers won't be doing. Beat them to all the best spots.

“I like a very good hotel, but not necessarily the best,” says Betty. Focus on getting the right location.

16. Base yourself strategically

Betty, 80, an art collector who declined to share her last name, has found that mid-sized hotels (meaning about 200 rooms) in central locations, with just enough of the services she wants and needs, do the job. “I like a very good hotel, but not necessarily the best,” says Betty. As long as you have the basics covered, it's really about location, location, location.

17. Don’t wait for tomorrow

Instead of putting off travel for a later date, Chicago -based Ruthie Maldonado-Delwiche advises those interested in exploring the world to get out there and “do it now.” Because “tomorrow isn’t promised,” Maldonado-Delwiche, who’s been traveling since she retired in 2017, says. Don't wait if there’s something you want to do or a place you want to visit.

Former psychiatrist Ann Heaslett, 60, who aims to run the six major world marathons in her retirement, feels exactly the same way. “There’s no time like the present.”

I Haven’t Checked a Bag in 10 Years — Here, My 14 Sure-fire Travel Essentials to Get Everything in a Carry-on

These frequent flier-approved picks cover all of your travel bases, and they start at $10.

Travel + Leisure

I travel twice a month covering destinations that inspire readers and those planning vacations. In order to efficiently move through airports, take Ubers, and lug everything on my own, I’ve had to master the art of packing light . But as a chronic overpacker in my former days, this didn’t come easy. However, once I started embracing the carry-on-only lifestyle, I would never go back. It’s been over 10 years since I’ve checked a bag — regardless of where I’m going or how long the trip is.

In addition to quality luggage pieces (I swear by my Gregory Quadro 22-Inch Hardcase Carry-On and always bring Calpak’s Luka Duffel as my personal carry-on tote to fit extra clothes and accessories), successful carry-on-only traveling involves strategic packing. When planning which clothes to bring, I think in terms of outfits and try to incorporate versatile capsule wardrobe items that match with several things (layers are also key). Lastly, compression packing cubes work wonders — as do my 14 travel essentials that always make my packing list so I never have to check a bag.

These go-to items include packing aids, versatile clothing and accessories, and more to help me maximize every inch of suitcase space without going over the limit. Even better, they start at $10 at Amazon.

Cambond Compression Packing Cubes

Compression organizers are game-changers. Not only do they flatten your items so you can pack more in your suitcase, but they also aid in organizing your outfits; you can pack your clothes according to style, color, or category. Cambond’s sturdy nylon packing cubes have a double zipper for easy access and hassle-free compressing. They’re also water-resistant, which means that they'll protect your items from any potential leaks or spills. I also like that they’re lightweight; the last thing you want to do is add weight to your carry-on.

They’re sold in sets with various sizing options, and are available in 45 colors. This item is a favorite among shoppers because of how effective the compression is for packing. And, according to one Amazon reviewer , they helped them travel to Europe for "a week with only a backpack and a carry-on."

Anrabess Romper With Pockets

I always pack a romper because it saves space and maximizes your outfit potential. This super cute one from Amazon-loved brand Anrabess is made with a comfy polyester-rayon-spandex blend to ensure comfort and stretch. You can play with the neckline and wear it several ways — crewneck style, off-the-shoulder, or Bardot-style. The tie-front drawstring at the waist accentuates your silhouette, offering a flattering fit.

The fabric is thick so it’s not see-through. It makes the perfect loungewear item and is versatile enough to wear to the beach, picnics, by the pool, and even out running errands. Pair it with a nice pair of sandals or heels and it’s the perfect outfit for dinner. I’m a huge fan of pockets, and the romper has two side pockets for holding lightweight (but essential) items such as lipstick or cash.

M.M. LaFleur Moreland Jacket

M.M.Lafleur

A seasonless suit is a no-brainer when I head out for work trips. Even if you’re traveling for pleasure, sporting a blazer and a pair of trousers creates an instantly sophisticated look. M.M. LaFleur’s Origami Tech collection is specifically designed to be your ultimate travel companion; the Moreland Jacket and matching Colby pants are wrinkle-resistant and machine-washable.

The set can be worn together or separately; the jacket matches well with a good, old pair of jeans on sightseeing days or leggings when you’re catching a flight. You can also wear it over a dress or blouse-skirt combo for polished lunch or dinner looks. To get the same workwear-inspired travel outfit for less, you can grab Amazon’s best-selling blazer for $58.

Amazhiyu Button-Down Midi Dress With Pockets and Belt

Pack a dress that does everything, one that you can wear during the day and do double duty at night. While I’m obsessed with the celeb-favorite Jenni Kayne Day Dress , at a whopping $395, a girl’s got to budget. That’s why, when I found this linen button down dress at Amazon, I couldn’t wait to try it on. It features a sleeveless, collar design with side slits and a removable self-tie belt to give it shape; it’s very flattering and accommodates all shapes and sizes. Sometimes, I use my favorite woven belt (I'll go into more detail about it later) instead, which instantly creates a different vacation look without requiring additional clothing items.

It’s a great travel piece for spring because it’s made of 100 percent linen, which is known for being a breathable and moisture-wicking fabric. There are two side pockets for stashing essentials, a feature that reviewers praised. One shopper wrote , "I absolutely love this dress. The pockets are really big, which is great. Everything about this dress is quality, and I stayed cool in the summer heat." Another noted that the pockets "are flat and don't stick out" when they have stuff in them.

Lightbird Foldable Summer Straw Bucket Beach Hat

This packable straw hat is the best travel hack. There have been many times where I’ve wanted to bring a stylish hat, but ended up not doing so because it takes up too much real estate in my luggage. That's no longer a worry with this stylish bucket hat that folds down for easy packing. It also easily adjusts to fit almost everyone with a cinch drawstring lining on the inside.

It’s a hot travel accessory because not only does it keep you safe from the sun’s rays, it also keeps you cool and looking stylish. Plus, you can use it to spice up your vacation outfits, giving the already-worn looks a fresh feel.

Vermouth Beauty In The Nude Flight of Five Crayons

When traveling, I always bring these cleverly packaged Vermouth lip crayons, which are sustainably sourced and free of plastics and chemicals. Each "flight" features a color palette of five crayons in various hues, giving you multiple lipstick options without taking up precious toiletry bag space.

What's more, these long-lasting and hydrating crayons can be worn dabbed on your cheeks like blush or swiped across your eyelids in place of eyeshadow, further helping you cut down on beauty products and freeing up room for other trip essentials in your toiletry bag and carry-on.

Fjallraven Women's Kanken Hip Pack

I’m a huge fan of Fjallraven travel bags because of their timeless designs and practicality. Made with 100 percent vinylon fabric, this hip pack is durable and water-resistant, and is the only bag that you need to pack. It works whether you’re hitting the streets for a day of window shopping, the trails for hiking, or the strip for dinner. It’s just small enough that it also works as a wallet within a bigger bag or purse, if that's more your vibe (and you need the extra carry-on space). I like wearing it as a crossbody, though some fans wear it as a fanny pack.

Versatility aside, this bag really shines because of its roominess. One shopper wrote , "I was worried at first because it looks very small, but it has three compartments [and a] lot of room."

Everlane Day Ballet Flats

Everlane's Day Ballet Flats are easy to pack and don’t take up a lot of space. They can be worn with a casual outfit or dressed up for a nice dinner. Because of their adaptability, you’ll always find them on my packing list. While I own several pairs of the brand’s flats, these are my favorite because they’re chic and comfortable. I especially like the sweet little bow on top.

The soft, buttery leather molds to your feet, so they get more comfortable with wear. They’re great travel shoes because they’re stylish when paired with denim, leggings, dresses, pants, and even shorts. What's more, the outsoles are made of rubber, which keeps you from slipping on smooth or wet surfaces.

SeptCity Woven Rattan Wide-Stretch Straw Belt

It's time to give my favorite belt its flowers. A belt changes everything, and I love getting creative and refreshing an outfit with this trendy belt. It converts one outfit into another one, requiring you to pack less — a.k.a. why it's a must on my packing list. Its rattan fabric adds an elegant touch to my favorite outfits, and I love to wear it with skirts, dresses, over cardigans, and even tunics (one of my favorite looks is pairing it with this Trovata shift or PrettyGarden’s floral frock ).

It has a sturdy wooden buckle and measures 41.3 inches in length and 1.8 inches wide, but still offers you a little wiggle room with its stretchy design. The belt is also available in beige and cream, which are both neutral colors that work with most outfit palettes.

Acelitt Short-Sleeve V-Neck Button-Front Belted Jumpsuit

Similar to rompers, jumpsuits streamline the amount of clothes that you need to pack, offering you extra room so you don’t have to overpack and check your bags. This elegant version from Amazon-favorite brand Acelitt is ready for any situation; just add a sweater, blazer, or jacket on top to change it up. It’s comfortable, trendy, and super flattering, and the fabric is soft and stretchy so you can sport it on the plane, around town, and out to dinner without needing an outfit change.

One traveler wrote , "I love this jumpsuit so much that I have it in blue and black, [and I'm] ordering the olive green next. It's super easy to dress up or down [and] fits true to size. I always get compliments on it. It's great to travel with as well."

Mammut Runbold Light Pants

Mammut’s Runbold Light Pants are multi-functional for me. I wear them while running, hiking, and lounging, and they're lightweight and breathable material makes them perfect for spring’s transitional temperatures (you can even wear them well into the summer). The elastic waistband offers comfort for all activities, and you can convert to three-quarter-length pants to change up their look when your itinerary calls for it.

The two slit side pockets have zippers, which are ideal for hiking and traveling. They’re super easy to pack and water-repellent, so if the forecast warns of a slight drizzle, you’ll be okay.

Everlane’s Cotton Modern Trench Coat

A classic trench coat is a wardrobe staple, and I especially like to pack one for spring travel because it is well-suited for the variable weather. If you’re like me and have been fan-crushing on Jennifer Aniston’s wardrobe on "The Morning Show," then you’re going to fall for Everlane’s Cotton Trench Coat, which is half the price of other brand names and has a classic silhouette, with a belt to cinch at the waistline — and is fully-lined and water-resistant.

But, if $268 is too much for your travel wardrobe budget, I also spotted various, under-$100 versions at Amazon. Give the Farktop Double-Breasted Oversized Long Trench Coat (on sale for $80) or the Tanming Notch Lapel Double- Breasted Pea Coat-style Trench (which is on sale for $60) a look.

M.M. LaFleur Merritt Jardigan

M.M. LaFleur

The Merritt Jardigan is an investment that I’m glad I made. A cross between a tailored jacket and a cardigan, with a tie-front belt that accentuates your figure, it works wonders for elevating your ensemble, and can be worn from your desk to the airport to dinner. Wrinkle-resistant, stretchy, and long enough to cover your assets, I’ve worn it on the way to Pilates class, at the airport, and for numerous dinners. Plus, the fabric is season-less, which makes it great for any time of the year.

You can achieve the same elegant, quiet luxury wardrobe vibes with the Anrabess Open Front Cardigan Jacket , which is an Amazon-favorite outerwear piece that's just $50.

Feisedy Polarized Vintage Sunglasses Jackie O Cat-Eye Sunglasses

I stopped shelling out hundreds of dollars for brand-name glasses because they can easily get damaged or lost, especially when traveling. These elegant sunglasses give off a “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” look at a compelling price, and they're incredibly versatile with their classic black, cat-eye silhouette that can be worn with any outfit for any occasion.

Not only are they light and comfortable, they’re polarized and offer 100 percent UV protection from the sun. The lenses are scratch-resistant, which enhance their durability. Singing the sunnies' praises, one shopper said , "They're better than my expensive, name-brand sunglasses. I can see better while traveling. I will take them with me on any of my trips without being afraid to lose them… not [a] scratch yet."

10 Bare Essentials To Pack In Your Personal Item (Rather Than A Carry On)

W ith the rise of low-cost carriers, it’s becoming increasingly common to see a basic economy airfare ticket include no luggage. This means that travelers seeking a cheap plane ticket can’t even bring a carry-on suitcase without incurring hefty additional costs . But is the carry-on bag really necessary?

For the avid traveler, the allure of an affordable flight might be strong enough to ditch the carry-on and pack only a personal item for a week-long adventure. A personal item is a bag that air passengers can keep with them during the flight, traditionally stored under the seat in front of them during take-off and landing. This can be a briefcase, a large purse, or a backpack. Packing hacks can make a personal item useful for an entire trip, as long as the right items are included.

In scenarios where travelers choose to check a suitcase and their luggage gets lost , the personal item might be all they have to live out of for a few days until the airline locates the lost bag . By choosing a backpack, travelers can capitalize on the personal item space they have and keep the bare essentials handy at all times.

A (Versatile) Change Of Clothes

Packing a versatile change of clothes is always a good idea for personal item. Whether traveling solely with the personal item or using it as a backup for a lost checked bag, having something clean to change into after a day of travel is essential.

  • Why It’s An Essential: Unexpected delays or layovers
  • How To Pack: Roll pack

Medications

Medications cannot be put in a checked bag, they must travel with the individual. For this reason, they require space in the personal item whether traveling with just the backpack or not. Always bring medication correctly labeled for safety, clarity, and to avoid confusion at customs.

  • Why It’s An Essential: Not allowed in checked luggage
  • How To Pack: Bring medication in its labeled bottle

Pajamas That Double As Athletic Wear

Choosing a pair of pajamas that has a double function is a great way to include another outfit in the personal item bag. For example, sweatpants and a basic t-shirt that can be worn as an outfit during the day if necessary, but that is also comfortable enough to sleep in is a good use of space.

  • Why It’s An Essential: In case flights are delayed or luggage is lost

Packable Down Jacket Or Rain Layer

Traveling with a jacket of some sort is always valuable. When traveling to a potentially chilly destination (or when it's unknown what to expect) a packable down jacket that compresses into a tiny pouch and can be stored in the bottom of the personal item backpack is a great option.

Sometimes, a simple lightweight rain shell that is rolled up small will be sufficient.

  • Why It’s An Essential: To prepare for all types of weather/cold airports
  • How To Pack: In compact carrying pouch

E-Reader, iPad, Or Smartphone

Having some means of communication and entertainment while traveling is necessary. Opt for at least one versatile electronic device like a smartphone or tablet and its charging cable even for short trips.

This means the ability to watch TV or movies, listen to music, or download a podcast for the plane when there is no in-flight entertainment.

  • Why It’s An Essential: Communication/ticket changes/entertainment
  • How To Pack: In electronics pouch in backpack

Microfiber Towel

A microfiber towel is something that experienced travelers know they shouldn’t leave home without. The number of times an Airbnb doesn’t have a suitable towel in the bathroom or a hostel doesn’t provide this luxury justifies the space it takes up in a personal item. Plus, the fast-drying material ensures it’s no hassle.

  • Why It’s An Essential: Hostels or airport showers
  • How To Pack: Folded small in carrying pouch

One Pair Of Socks

Having a spare pair of socks is always a good idea, especially in the event a checked bag gets lost. Having a clean, dry pair to change into feels good at the end of a long travel day.

  • Why It’s An Essential: Hygiene
  • How To Pack: Rolled up

One Change Of Underwear (Minimum)

The same is true for a pair of underwear. Travelers should always pack at least one extra pair in their personal item in case their other luggage gets lost.

If space permits, it never hurts to bring a few extra pairs, especially if the personal item is the only bag on the trip and laundry facilities might be limited.

Related: 10 Must-Have Carry-On Items For Anxious Flyers

Toiletries might not seem like a necessity (many essentials can be purchased at a convenience store or airport) but there are a few things to consider packing.

Having a toothbrush and toothpaste in a personal item is valuable not just for lost luggage, but for freshening up on or before an overnight flight. It helps avoid paying astronomical prices for these items at the airport.

  • Why It’s An Essential: For freshening up before bed or overnight flights
  • How To Pack: Small, clear toiletry bag

Flip Flops Or Sandals

Traveling with a spare pair of shoes isn’t a luxury — it’s smart. In a personal item, there isn't room for much, but travelers should consider packing flip-flops or sandals they can wear to protect their feet from dirty shower floors.

If they have to shower at the airport in the event of a delay, or they find themselves in a hostel dorm , it’s a great thing to have. Wear heavier shoes like boots or running shoes during the flight.

  • Why It’s An Essential: Hostels and airport showers
  • How To Pack: Stack one shoe on top of the other and put them in a clear Ziploc bag to protect other items in the backpack
