Everything We Know About Jack Reacher 3

of Everything We Know About Jack Reacher 3

I have often wondered what adapting an action novel for the screen would be like, there being a markedly different approach to even the literary form and the screenplay written for adapting the matter to film. The answer is to be sought from the Jack Reacher s, Jack Ryans, James Bonds , and the Jason Bournes of the world, each of them having headed immensely popular franchises. For that matter, Cruise has given himself to the action genre unflinchingly like dye to the wool, what with him performing his own stunts at his age being an unprecedented feat of sorts. While he virtually owns the ‘ Mission Impossible ’ franchise in his role of MI6 secret agent Ethan Hunt, still going strong after its sixth instalment made all the right noises in the right places for the right reasons, another one of his action franchises has visibly struggled with taking off and finding a sort of unanimous acceptance among fans — Jack Reacher.

‘ Jack Reacher ’, the fictional brainchild of British author Lee Child and a bonafide badass, joining the long list of ex-marine vigilante arse kickers from the pens of a number of authors, has had two film adaptations to date, remarkably less than any one of the other action heroes mentioned above despite there being a wealth of literature devoted to him (23 books), both starring Tom Cruise in the titular role and serving as standalone stories dictating the character’s exploits following his origins.

The first one finds its allegiance in the 2005 Child novel ‘One Shot’ while the second’s in its title, ‘Never Go Back’. Both films had a decent worldwide gross but ended up under-performing in the home circuit, while struggling critically as well; and the internet would state that they weren’t adored by fans of Reacher or Cruise much either. In these circumstances, while a sequel would seem highly unlikely given the unfavourable reception, we decode all the news we have regarding what could come of the third film and whether it would be happening or not. Read on.

Is Jack Reacher 3 happening?

tom cruise new film jack reacher

According to latest reports, Lee Child has signed a deal with the television divisions of both Paramount and Skydance, the distributors and producers of both of Cruise’s popular franchises ‘Jack Reacher’ and ‘ Mission Impossible ’, to produce a television series based on the character. While not much about it isn’t known either, it is pretty clear that the makers wish to take the ‘ Jack Ryan ’ route when none of their films worked either. The TV series starring John Krasinski ended up being a hit last year with both fans and critics, and it is not difficult to see why the makers too would tip in the favour of telling Reacher’s standalone stories as an anthology series or in an episodic nature. More so, the stability of Netflix and other streaming and television mediums have often proven antidotes to dwindling returns on the films, so this is not going to be a first.

As for the plot, one cannot be too certain since while only two of the novels have yet been adapted for the screen, we still have 21 more to go. Expect an intermixing of sorts, since the novels are not a tall order to be adapted across an entire season, unlike ‘ Game of Thrones ’, say. The plot details cannot be told for certain as of now, since there is no official word on how the makers wish to take this and approach the television series, but the long and short of it is that a third film in the continued franchise won’t be happening after ‘ Never Go Back ’. This might mean bad news for fans of the franchise, but unfortunately so, that’s the way the cookie crumbles in Hollywood.

Tom Cruise’s Exit: Who can be the next Jack Reacher?

tom cruise new film jack reacher

Yes, you read that right. With the news of no new films happening in the ‘Jack Reacher’ franchise, also comes the news that Tom Cruise won’t be reprising his role in any capacity. Instead, for television, the makers, including Lee Child, would be going the way of the novels and would be searching for an actor that would fit the physical description of him as laid out in the books. The principal cause of dissatisfaction here, as pointed out by some fans too, would be Tom Cruise’s height at 5 feet 7 inches, and his physicality. Reacher in the books is described as a formidable man, measuring up at 6 feet 5 inches, blonde and weighing in at 250 pounds.

According to Lee Childs, Reacher’s size and heftiness in the books was a metaphor for an “unstoppable force”, which Cruise portrayed “in his own way.” Furthermore, this is what he had to say about Cruise being dropped for the sequel and why it was important for them to get the casting right: “I really enjoyed working with Cruise. He’s a really, really nice guy. We had a lot of fun. But ultimately the readers are right. The size of Reacher is really, really important and it’s a big component of who he is. The idea is that when Reacher walks into a room, you’re all a little nervous just for that first minute. And Cruise, for all his talent, didn’t have that physicality. So what I’ve decided to do is – there won’t be any more movies with Tom Cruise . Instead we’re going to take it to Netflix or something like that. Long-form streaming television, with a completely new actor. We’re rebooting and starting over and we’re going to try and find the perfect guy.”

It is quite clear that while the makers hold a lot of respect for Cruise and what he did in the two films in which he portrayed the eponymous character, they will be moving on to a new actor, thus meaning Cruise’s retirement from the role. Reports state that Childs wants to involve a number of fans that were dissatisfied with Cruise’s casting to seek suggestions for the new casting to get the new actor, his looks and his physicality absolutely right.

Jack Reacher 3 Crew: Who can be behind it?

tom cruise new film jack reacher

Since a third movie most definitely would not be happening, that question is out of the window. As for the rebooted TV series, nothing apart from the announcement that it would be happening is known, so we will have to wait a fair bit to know more about that. That too rules out the possibility of the return of either Christopher McQuarrie, who has now had a successful run with Cruise directing two films in the MI franchise, and Edward Zwick, the director of the two Jack Reacher films. The only confirmation on this as of now is that Lee Childs will be directly involved in the production process of the TV show, as opposed to only his partial involvement in the films, having signed a deal with Skydance TV and Paramount TV, and perhaps also serve in the capacity of a screenwriter or a story consultant. We will, as always, update this section as soon as we receive any news regarding the TV series, so be sure to check back.

Jack Reacher 3 Release Date: When can it premiere?

tom cruise new film jack reacher

I just want to make sure that we are talking about the TV series here, because as I have established in the sections before this, a third ‘Jack Reacher’ film won’t be happening. The unfortunate thing is that the release date of the Jack Reacher TV series  isn’t currently known either, but we can safely assume that it would soon be on the writing boards, now that it has been announced with much fervour. From the looks of it, it would also seem that the project would head over to Netflix. Expect the pilot to air any time beyond early 2021, assuming enough time for casting, locations and the script to be finalised before it finally goes on board.

  • Trivia When Jack Reacher's car crashes into some barrels, the car accidentally stalled upon the impact, but Tom Cruise was luckily able to restart the car before driving off again. Rather than do a retake, Christopher McQuarrie decided to leave it in the film, as he felt it added to the suspense of the scene.
  • Goofs When Jack Reacher pulls out the Camaro's registration, it erroneously reads "State of Pennsylvania." Like three other states (KY, MA, and VA), Pennsylvania official designates itself as a "Commonwealth" not a "State."

Jack Reacher : Well, a hooker would get the joke.

Sandy : He called me a whore.

Jeb : Is that true?

Jack Reacher : Well, nobody said whore. She inferred hooker, but I meant slut.

'Reacher': release date, cast, plot, trailer, first looks, and everything you need to now about the Jack Reacher spin-off

Amazon's 'Reacher' is a new action-packed adaptation on Prime Video featuring Lee Child's famous hero.

'Reacher' star Alan Ritchson ready for action and out to prove he didn't commit murder.

Jack Reacher fans have an all-action thriller series featuring their favorite hero to get their teeth into. Move over Tom Cruise though, as Reacher on Amazon Prime Video will star Titans ’ Alan Ritchson as the towering, roaming veteran military police investigator in a thrilling new action-packed mystery crime series based on the novels by Lee Child .

Like the famous movies starring Tom Cruise, 2012’s  Jack Reacher  and 2016’s  Jack Reacher: Never Go Back , the eight-part series is packed with bare-knuckle fight scenes, clever stunts, gun battles, and a hint of romance, and has author Lee Child on board as executive producer.

So here’s everything we know so far about the Jack Reacher spin-off coming to Amazon Prime Video, including its first-look pictures and trailer…

'Reacher' arrives Feb 4 2022.

'Reacher' release date

All eight episodes of Reacher will be released worldwide Friday, Feb. 4 2022 on Amazon Prime Video.

It's one of a string of exciting things coming to Amazon Prime, including Amazon's Lords of the Rings TV series .

Is there a 'Reacher' trailer?

Yes, there's a great trailer for Reacher released by Amazon Prime Video. It shows Ritchson’s Reacher arriving in fictional town of Margrave, where he piques the interest of the local authorities, who are disturbed by the seven deaths that coincide with his arrival. It shows some thrilling fist fights, an obligatory topless shot, plus a scene of him popping off a beer bottle with just his muscles, and also hints at some romance for the character. Take a look at all the action right here with the trailer below plus a further clip (with a lot of fighting)...

'Reacher' plot

Reacher is based on Lee Child’s first Jack Reacher novel, Killing Floor , and follows the police investigator fresh out of the military, as he turns up in the small town of Margrave, Georgia, to find a community dealing with its first murder in 20 years. The cops immediately arrest Reacher and eyewitnesses claim to place Reacher at the scene of the crime. But while he works to prove his innocence, a deep-seated conspiracy begins to emerge.

"Within minutes of him arriving, he's arrested for murder," says Alan Ritchson, 39. "He basically has to solve the case to prove his innocence, and along the way he starts to uncover this sinister plot, and realises it’s close to home!’

Jack Reacher is a former military man.

'Reacher' cast — Alan Ritchson on playing Jack Reacher

Alan Ritchson plays Jack Reacher.

Alan Ritchson is best known for playing Hank Hall (aka Hawk) in DC’s Titans and Aquaman in Smallville . And at six foot three inches tall, he’s much closer to the imposing six foot five character in Lee Child’s novels compared to Cruise, who’s five foot seven.

Reacher star Alan Ritchson told Whattowatch.com : "He is a retired military police officer who is huge, violent, highly intelligent, and an incredible detective. Now that he’s out of the military, he sort of wanders the country, and trouble seems to find him. He’s that knight in shining armour who cleans up the streets for us. He is the drifter who comes into town, and who doesn’t rely on the law because he is the law."

Alan says he found Reacher’s combination of brains and brawn, together with his tendency not to say much, fascinating to play. "You expect somebody who looks like that to be a bit of a brute. But Reacher’s so sharp that he's one step ahead of everybody. He's a man of few words, and he allows people to believe what they want to believe about him. So he’s a mental gymnast, but the size of an ox!"

'Reacher' star Alan Ritchson is 6ft 3in tall..

'Reacher' cast — who else is starring

The Reacher cast also includes  What We Do in the Shadows ’ Harvey Guillén and  iZombie ’s Malcolm Goodwin, while  The Goldfinch ’s Willa Fitzgerald as cop Roscoe Conklin and Bruce McGill ( My Cousin Vinny ) plays Mayor Teale.

You'll also see Jack Reacher as a child, so there must be flashback scenes somewhere along the line in the drama. Young Reacher is played by Maxwell Jenkins, who famously plays Will Robinson in Lost In Space on Netflix.

Fans of British soaps should look out for Matthew Marsden, who was Chris Collins in Coronation Street . He plays Stan Reacher in this drama.

A brief guide to the previous Jack Reacher films

Lee Child has written 26 Jack Reacher books and two have been adapted for the big screen, both starring Tom Cruise as the ex army investigator turned drifter. The 2012 movie Jack Reacher saw Reacher help solve the case of five people shot dead in a seemingly random attack and also starred Rosamund Pike as the sniper’s defence attorney. Meanwhile, 2016 follow-up Jack Reacher: Never Go Back followed Reacher as he went on the run with an Army major who had been framed for espionage, as the two revealed a dark conspiracy.

All about Jack Reacher novelist Lee Child

The hugely popular Jack Reacher novels read like a love letter to America, packed as they are with diners and motels that their protagonist visits as he drifts from one small town to another across the US, righting wrongs along the way. However, their creator, Lee Child , was born in Coventry, schooled in Birmingham, studied law in Sheffield and worked in television production in Manchester. It was only after the publication of his first novel Killing Floor , on which the new series Reacher is based, that Lee Child – born James Grant – emigrated to the US.

"America is an exciting place to live and an ideal setting for my series of thrillers," says the 67-year-old. "My stories have been set all over the US – from Montana to Mississippi."

Despite the success of the books, Lee Child announced in 2020 that he would be letting his brother, Andrew Grant , take over authorship of the Reacher series.

"Andrew really is me 15 years ago, still full of energy, still full of ideas," says Lee, who has already co-written three Reacher books with his sibling."And so I think this is the perfect solution."

Jack Reacher Was the Beginning of a Beautiful Blockbuster Friendship

tom cruise new film jack reacher

Here are the things you need to know about the character Jack Reacher: He stands at six feet, five inches tall and weighs roughly 250 pounds. He is an ex-military police officer who now drifts across the country, stumbling across small-town problems (an unsolved murder, a kidnapping). Typically he will do what he can to restore order and pursue justice and one time he survived getting shot directly in the chest because he’s so jacked that his muscles stopped the bullet. Jack Reacher is a sparse man with a sparse wardrobe, largely assembled from Goodwills and community thrift stores, picking up what he needs as he finds himself needing it and discarding it when it has outlived its usefulness to him, and in case you skimmed past the prior sentence I’ll say one more time that Jack Reacher is so big that one time his muscles stopped a bullet.

You could be forgiven for reading this description and not immediately thinking of Tom Cruise, a man famously 5’7” on a good day. And yet Cruise took on the role of that beefcake drifter in 2012, garnering vocal outcry from the Jack Reacher fan community (largely comprised of dads, a group who famously refuse to waver in their opinions on the most trivial of matters like, for example, who should play the fictional character Jack Reacher). “He is a terrible match for the character,” Jack Reacher fans insisted. “There is no way Tom Cruise’s chest could stop a bullet fired at point blank range and also he is very short.”

With respect for the Jack Reacher stans, I would posit this: Cruise’s physique is a valid reason to knock his casting but not a valid reason to dismiss the film outright, which holds tremendous merit even if its lead actor doesn’t have pecs dense enough to serve as Kevlar. There are two reasons for this, one being that Thomas Cruise Mapother IV is one of the great movie stars of all time who can bring things to a performance that no 6’5”, 250-pound beefcake who played Aquaman on Smallville can. The second is that Jack Reacher marks the first director-actor collaboration between Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie, a collaboration that has yielded what the kids might call “bangers only.”

McQuarrie first rose to fame as the writer of The Usual Suspects , though after his disastrous directorial debut, The Way of the Gun (it’s bad, and not even in a fun way), he was put in what he long referred to as “director jail.” He returned to his work as a screenwriter and first crossed paths with Cruise during the making of the 2008 film Valkyrie . The film is one of the great missteps in Cruise’s career and had a notoriously troubled production , though amid that chaos Cruise and McQuarrie seem to have found in one another kindred collaborative spirits.

Cruise’s production company Cruise/Wagner Productions acquired the film rights to Jack Reacher back in 2005. The project lingered in limbo for a few years, finally getting a kickstart when McQuarrie was hired to revise the script, an adaptation of the ninth Reacher novel, One Shot . It went into production at a pivotal moment in Cruise’s career as well as McQuarrie’s. For Cruise, his star power — which had fallen substantially in the years following his couch-jumping, histrionic 2005 (an all-time bad PR year for any celebrity) — no longer guaranteed a movie would be a hit. Cruise rethought his approach to blockbuster filmmaking accordingly for Jack Reacher . No longer able to approach every project with a blank check, he agreed to a scaled-down production budget of $60 million. The lower budget made the project an enticing get for a studio — a Cruise movie still had the potential to be a massive hit and this one came with substantially lower risk. It also allowed Cruise some more freedom in his producer responsibilities, such as putting the film’s creative team together. He used that leverage to break McQuarrie out of director jail and put him behind the camera once again.

It proved a savvy move. Whatever Cruise’s physique prevents him from bringing to the role of Jack Reacher — though his performance is as locked in as ever, all simmering rage and gritted jaws and rarely ever smiling — McQuarrie’s script and directing make up for in spades. Jack Reacher is a down-the-middle adult thriller directed with a Hitchcockian eye, meticulously composed and paced with an attention to detail rare in this sort of film. Like all great mysteries, every answer to the questions the audience will spend the film asking is present in the opening set piece.

Speaking of which, an entire essay could be dedicated to the first 12 minutes alone. The film’s opening is dialogue free, with nearly ten minutes of relative silence as McQuarrie walks us through the film’s inciting incident: a mass shooting carried out by a sniper played by Jai Courtney, a man studios have been insisting for years is America’s sweetheart (he is, to his credit, doing the best work of his career in this movie). From here we see, in a VERY deliberately staged series of shots, the subsequent police investigation leading to the arrest of a man pointedly not played by Jai Courtney. At the 8:20 mark the first lines of dialogue are recited and one minute and 22 seconds later our protagonist’s presence is first made known.

It begins with a note written by a murder suspect on a legal pad (“GET JACK REACHER,” which is an incredibly rad way to introduce a character named Jack Reacher) followed by the district attorney (Richard Jenkins) and the police detective in charge of the case (David Oyewolo) going over every piece of information they can find on this off-the-grid drifter. By the time Cruise makes his entrance at the film’s 12-minute mark, McQuarrie has so deftly established the legend of Jack Reacher it’s irrelevant that the man who walks through the DA’s office door isn’t 6’5” and 250 pounds; it doesn’t matter because the man who walks through that door is Jack Reacher and the viewer now knows exactly who that is.

To recount the film’s plot from here feels unnecessary (though in case it isn’t, the short of it is that Reacher and James Barr, the man set up to take the fall for the shooting, have a shady history and Reacher is begrudgingly charged with figuring out whether or not Barr is responsible — which Reacher spends most of the movie certain he is). It is a well-plotted mystery thriller but nothing extraordinary on its own. What is extraordinary is everything else about it, from DP Caleb Deschanel’s work behind the camera (the way that he stages the aforementioned shooting through the scope of the sniper’s rifle is inspired) to a stacked cast that includes everyone from Werner Herzog to Robert Duvall. Jack Reacher does everything a movie of its kind is supposed to do, only it does it 10 to 20 percent better than necessary.

A couple of months into Jack Reacher ’s production, Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol hit theaters, proving a smash hit and grossing nearly $700 million worldwide. It began the long process of restoring Cruise’s star status to its former glory and, crucially, gave the franchise a second wind (before McQuarrie’s uncredited rewrites on the script, Cruise’s Ethan Hunt was rumored to be phased out in favor of a new star, Jeremy Renner). With a fifth Cruise-fronted M:I now on the table, McQuarrie stepped in as the franchise’s next director and, in an unprecedented turn of events, stuck around for the next three sequels (2018’s Fallout and Dead Reckoning, Parts One and Two, which are currently in production), making him the only director to have helmed more than one film in the franchise.

Cruise and McQuarrie’s partnership has now been going strong for nearly 15 years. The latter is responsible for some of the best work of Cruise’s late-stage career, and the former got McQuarrie what’s now clearly a much-deserved second chance as a director. Neither would be where they are now without the other, or without a 6’5”, 250-pound ex-military drifter whose pecs are so big they have rendered him immune to bullets.

This month seems to be the time to release action movies that color outside the lines. We've already had Dev Patel's Monkey Man, a messy, throw-everything-at-the-wall action movie that blends intricate fight sequences and on-the-nose social commentary in an entertaining package that will surely gain cult status in the near future. Just this weekend, Boy Kills World dished out loads of cartoon violence and over-the-top gore in a bid for John Wick-level fandom. Both movies bend or break the rules of reality to deliver quickly cut fight scenes that push the boundaries of the genre, all in an attempt to one-up the high standards set by the best movies in the Mission: Impossible and Fast and Furious franchises.

Yet the best of the April bunch is the one that has the lowest profile. City Hunter doesn't star anyone you'd recognize like It actor Bill Skarsgård in Boy Kills World and hasn't been backed by an extensive marketing campaign like Universal's Monkey Man. But the movie is a blast; it's like putting Pop Rocks in a can of Mountain Dew and chasing it down with a couple of Pixy Sticks. It's ludicrous, immature, and totally unrealistic. It's also my favorite action movie of 2024. Here's why you need to stream City Hunter pronto. It's an adaptation of a massively popular franchise

Thanks to ad-supported streaming services like Amazon Freevee, Tubi, Pluto TV, and more, there's a huge selection of great free action movies streaming right now. Netflix is home to many great shows. It's also the most prolific and well-known streaming service of them all, with a large catalog of original and acquired content. However, the King of Streamers is also famous for being quite trigger-happy. Indeed, Netflix is no stranger to canceling its shows, even if it spent millions producing them; if they don't yield immediate results, the streamer will pull the plug without blinking an eye.

Still, many original shows have beaten the cancellation curse and had a successful life, at least by streaming standards. These shows are Netflix's best efforts that actually got to enjoy a full life cycle, receiving more than five seasons. None might come close to the 100-episode mark, but these beloved series prove to hopeful showrunners everywhere that there is indeed life on Netflix after season 5. 10. 10 Ways Jack Reacher Really Is The American James Bond

  • Reacher star Alan Ritchson believes the show is the "American James Bond" due to similarities in the lead characters in both properties.
  • Both Bond and Reacher value intellect over brute force, but will use violence when necessary.
  • Amazon owns both the Reacher TV show and the James Bond movie franchise, which highlights their shared facets.

Even though Reacher and James Bond don't share a direct connection, several arguments support the opinion of Reacher star Alan Ritchson, telling Entertainment Weekly he thinks his show is essentially the " American James Bond ." Bond and Reacher share a great deal in common, despite being created in different countries, decades apart from one another. So far, every James Bond movie predates Amazon's Reacher TV show, although Tom Cruise's two Jack Reacher movies were released during Daniel Craig's reign as 007. While every James Bond actor brings something new to the role, the basic character remains similar to Reacher.

The first James Bond movie was 1962's Dr. No , and while the first Jack Reacher on-screen adaptation was Tom Cruise's 2012 movie, Amazon has since rebooted the franchise. Now, Alan Ritchson embodies the hulking American and has done so since Reacher season 1 began in 2022 . As such, Ritchson is only the second actor to step into Reacher's shoes, whereas several actors have portrayed Bond through the decades. Regardless, it's difficult to ignore the other connections between Bond and Reacher.

Every James Bond Movie Title Meaning Explained

Reacher & bond both perfectly blend brains & brawn, ritchson's character matches 007's level of balance.

Given the action-led nature of both franchises, it would be easy to have a protagonist who is always looking for the most explosive option. However, James Bond and Jack Reacher aren't just brutal killing machines . While both men certainly have long histories of violence, it's rarely their first option. Instead, Bond and Reacher make use of their intellect to analyze a situation before taking action.

If bloodshed can be avoided, both characters will almost always find an alternative plan that circumvents the need for confrontation. That being said, it's clear that both Reacher and Bond share a quiet enjoyment of violence , so when a scenario arises that calls for immediate action, neither man is disappointed by the call to arms. Their intelligence doesn't just help with the planning stage either, but also in the mostly flawless execution.

Reacher & James Bond Regularly Switch Love Interests

Both characters have various romantic partners.

A steady romantic relationship isn't something commonly associated with either Reacher or Bond. In fact, 007 has been with so many women that it led to the creation of the "Bond Girl" category . While Ritchson's Reacher is still only two seasons in, he has been involved with a different love interest in each installment. Given the anthological format of the Amazon show, this is likely a trend that will continue, leading to a new addition to the Reacher season 3 cast .

By the time Connery's third Bond movie came around, Gayson had been dropped and replaced by Honor Blackman's Pussy Galore in 1964's Goldfinger .

Like Reacher, James Bond also partners with a new woman in almost every movie. The exception to this rule is Sean Connery's Bond being involved with Eunice Gayson's Sylvia Trench in Dr. No , and the next movie, 1963's From Russian with Love. By the time Connery's third Bond movie came around, Gayson had been dropped and replaced by Honor Blackman's Pussy Galore in 1964's Goldfinger .

Amazon Owns The Reacher TV Show & The Bond Movie Franchise

Amazon bought the rights to james bond in 2022.

In a somewhat meta revelation, Reacher and the James Bond franchise are now both the property of Amazon. While the James Bond movie rights had belonged to MGM since the 1980s, Amazon's purchase of MGM in 2022 means it owns the Bond movie franchise . Reacher 's situation is far less complicated, as the show is an Amazon original and always has been. Although it's unlikely that Amazon is making a conscious effort to connect Bond and Reacher , the shared ownership highlights their shared facets.

When it's considered that Amazon is the driving force behind both James Bond and Reacher , the high-budget action sequences in both franchises suddenly make much more sense. Bond movies have been an incredibly profitable endeavor through the decades , so it would make sense that Amazon would gravitate to purchasing such a similar property and continue to apply such a familiar framework.

James Bond & Jack Reacher Keep Their Cards Close To Their Chests

Both characters need their feelings coaxed out of them.

Reacher is an incredibly hard man to read, which is a personality trait shared by his British counterpart. Neither character is prone to volatile emotional outbursts, instead letting a level head and precise action do the talking. Bond and Reacher also aren't associated with big speeches or lengthy rants . Instead, they tend to get their respective points across in a measured way that takes as few words as humanly possible.

While no version of James Bond has ever been particularly emotive, Daniel Craig's version of the character is a paragon of Stocisim , and is therefore much more akin to Ritchson's Reacher than the other Bond actors. Even though both characters favor a truncated form of communication, it's quite often a very effective method of getting their thoughts across to their allies or even their enemies.

Both Characters Trust Very Few People

Bond & reacher have a revolving door of allies.

It would be inaccurate to say that James Bond and Jack Reacher have enormous social circles . Instead, both men only regularly associate with a select group. Even then, it's rare for them to voluntarily spend time with more than one person at a time. Furthermore, there needs to be a very good reason for them to not be alone at all. What's interesting is that the smattering of individuals in each man's respective circle are primarily former colleagues or allies.

One Daniel Craig James Bond Movie Title Had A Deeper Meaning (& Broke A 19-Year Trend)

For instance, Bond is close to almost no one he meets outside a mission , with M being the closest thing he has to what would be considered a traditional friend. Similarly, the surviving members of Reacher's 110th Special Investigator's Unit make up almost his entire collection of comrades. While this seems to suit Reacher, Neagley warns her former commanding officer at the end of Reacher season 2 that keeping the 110th at arm's length won't be tolerated anymore. For Bond, his eternal solitude is his own decision.

Bond & Reacher Are Both Fearsome In Armed & Unarmed Combat

Reacher's training is at least as good as james bond's.

It's well established that neither Bond nor Reacher should be trifled with when they have a gun in their hands, with Bond even having a preference for a specific model of firearm. What's interesting is that when both men are disarmed, their effectiveness in a fight is barely reduced. Bond may not be a physically imposing man, but his abilities in a hand-to-hand brawl are almost unmatched due to being trained in martial arts.

Reacher is naturally very strong, but his time in the military makes him an even more imposing presence when the guns are put to one side.

The sheer size of Jack Reacher gives him an advantage in a close-quarters fight , and it isn't one that he squanders. Reacher is naturally very strong, but his time in the military makes him an even more imposing presence when the guns are put to one side. What he lacks in speed and agility, he makes up for in quick reflexes and brute strength. Reacher's crazy abilities are perhaps best displayed in Reacher season 2, episode 2, "What Happens in Atlantic City," when he kicks a stationary car so hard that the airbags deploy.

Jack Reacher Is Just As Headstrong As James Bond

Few people can tell reacher or bond what to do.

Even though Bond holds a senior position in MI6, he still has superiors. However, he tends to only follow orders when it suits him. There aren't many who can force 007 to do as he's told , but his internal driving force doesn't tend to let him down. Reacher also marches to the beat of his own drum, but his independence doesn't ruffle anyone's feathers in any official capacity.

Reacher's time in the military is over by the time the show begins , although flashbacks in season 2 do show key moments from his career. His status as a wanderer means he doesn't have to answer to anyone like Bond does, but Reacher season 2's flashbacks are proof that if Ritchson's character receives orders he disagrees with, he's going to go out of his way to disobey them.

Reacher & Bond Both Have Literary Origins

Child & fleming are responsible for the creation of reacher and bond respectively.

Given the popularity of the James Bond movie franchise, it can be easy to forget that the character began as the creation of Scottish author, Ian Fleming. Although further Bond books have been commissioned in the wake of Fleming's death , the 007 creator penned 14 of them before his passing. Due to the volume of James Bond movies that have been made, every original book has now been adapted for the big screen, with a few original screenplays thrown in for good measure.

It's highly unlikely that Amazon's show will get around to adapting every Jack Reacher book by Lee Child, but the streaming service is in a great position by having so much source material to work with.

Lee Child's Killing Floor was the first Jack Reacher book published , with the novel arriving in 1997. Since then, Child has continued to add to his literary world, and now there are almost 30 installments in the book series. It's highly unlikely that Amazon's show will get around to adapting every Jack Reacher book by Lee Child , but the streaming service is in a great position by having so much source material to work with.

Neither James Bond Nor Jack Reacher Have Any Surviving Immediate Family

Daniel craig bucks this trend in no time to die.

Although Daniel Craig's version of James Bond is revealed to have a daughter in 2021's No Time To Die , no other iteration of 007 has ever fathered a child. So, traditionally, Bond's loner status remains intact. This is compounded by the fact that both of his parents died when he was young, and he never had any brothers or sisters. Bond's tragic backstory is part of what contributes to his tortured soul persona , and the case is very similar for Jack Reacher.

Although Reacher wasn't orphaned until he was already an adult, he was without his parents by the time the Amazon TV show started. While his older brother was still alive for a time, Reacher season 1 comes with the revelation that Joe Reacher was killed in Margrave, Georgia. As a result, Jack Reacher is left just as isolated from a familial standpoint as James Bond .

Bond & Reacher Received Their Training From Official Organizations

Both men have ties to the military in their respective countries.

There's an explanation as to why James Bond and Jack Reacher are such formidable opponents. Their survival and combat talents didn't just come naturally to them. Instead, their abilities were earned due to time spent training with their respective employers. For Jack Reacher, the organization in question was the US Army, where he served in the military police and achieved the rank of major.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson As James Bond Would Break A 55-Year-Old 007 Casting Trend

James Bond also has a military history , as he was a Royal Naval Reserve Commander before working for MI6 as part of the 00 program. So, it could be argued that Bond's training surpasses that of Reacher's, although it's a good bet that the winner in a fight between both men would come down to fine margins. Interestingly, while James Bond has a government-sanctioned license to kill, Reacher also often gets away with literal murder - although on a somewhat less official basis.

Reacher seasons 1-2 can be streamed on Prime Video, with Reacher season 3 on the way but lacking an official release date. The James Bond movies aren't currently on streaming services.

Child’s play … Reacher.

Reacher review – the house-sized action hero Tom Cruise will never be

This rollicking adaptation of Lee Child’s man-mountain ex-military sleuth is hugely fun, packed with punchups and far better than Cruise’s movie efforts

D ear fellow fans of Lee Child’s inimitable creation: all you need to know about Reacher (Amazon Prime Video), the new television series based on the books , is that for the first six and half minutes of the opening episode, Reacher says nothing.

This, for the uninitiated, is both the defining feature of Jack Reacher – our ex-military police, lone-wolf hero and man-with-virtually-no-name – and a recurring line in the series of books about his violently noble and nobly violent adventures. Silence is the essence of the man. Most of the outrage surrounding the casting of Tom Cruise in the role for the two film adaptations (of the ninth and 18th books) dwelt on the fact that Reacher is a 6ft 5in, 250-pound wall of muscle and Cruise is … not. But it should have been at least as much about the fact that Cruise’s essential energy is that of a chirrupy people-pleaser and Reacher is living proof that a man can be an island if he just puts his mind to it.

Now, at last, we have everything. A production team that understands that, like Harry Potter fans, we need the books – precision-engineered already to deliver exactly what is expected – translated to the screen as fully and as smoothly as possible. And Alan Ritchson, an actor the size of a house and roughly as expressive unless called upon to be otherwise. He has all of Reacher’s stillness and confidence. He exudes exactly his brand of weary patience. And somehow – and of all these gifts, this one surely had the producers falling upon him in weeping gratitude – he is capable of delivering Reacher’s occasional but vital monologues about how exactly he is going to break the next seven people’s heads.

The inaugural Reacher series is based, as is right and proper, on the first book in the novel sequence – Killing Floor. If you have read Killing Floor, you now know – and this is a promise of delight, not disappointment – exactly what happens in it. But, again, for the uninitiated: our enormous hero gets off a bus (on a whim – this, and drinking black coffee, is what he does) in the tiny town of Margrave, Georgia, and is quickly arrested on suspicion of murder. Now he must stay in Margrave and prove he didn’t do it. And, when he finds out who has been killed, the matter becomes a personal “find everybody responsible and kill every last one of them”.

In the process, he gets put in the bad part of a prison to await arraignment and must use his finely honed fighting skills to stay alive (to see Ritchson walking serenely out of a bathroom littered with bleeding bodies is to know a very special kind of peace), befriends a lady (Reacher is allowed one lady per adventure) and forges a mutually respectful alliance with the investigating officer who is reluctantly impressed by both Reacher’s intellect and street smarts, which combine to give him almost Sherlockian powers of deduction. Ritchson’s delivery (with just a flicker of knowing humour about the eyes) of these litanies of deduction on screen recall – gloriously – the heady days of Paul Gross doing similar monologues as Constable Benton Fraser in Due South, albeit with the slightly more surreal atmosphere of the show to help him sell it. Ritchson works alone.

Amazon’s take on Reacher is as solidly made as he is and delivers the rollicking yarn as efficiently as the man himself can dispatch a Glock-wielding gangster. It is great, great fun and will come as a great, great relief to the Reacher devotees who will surely – at least at first – form the bulk of viewers. It will please them endlessly but is still drawn broadly enough as a crime drama to attract others. Pour yourself a black coffee, sit back and enjoy.

DC's 'Titans' star Alan Ritchson takes over from Tom Cruise as the new Jack Reacher

Alan Ritchson, star of DC's Titans series, has been cast as the new Jack Reacher, in Amazon's planned serialised reboot of Lee Child's best-selling novel series.

Ritchson takes over the role from Tom Cruise, who played the former military policeman turned wandering crime disrupter in two movies, 2012's Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in 2016.

Read more: Tom Cruise pulls of epic Mission: Impossible 7 stunt

37-year-old Ritchson plays Hank Hall, aka Hawk, in DC's TV series Titans , and also starred in the college football comedy Blue Mountain State .

On the big screen, he starred in Hunger Games: Catching Fire , and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle reboot movies.

The Amazon series will take on first of the Jack Reacher novels, The Killing Floor , first published by Child in 1997 – the first Cruise movie took on One Shot , published in 2005.

The pair of movies did only moderate business for a Cruise-helmed project, making just $400 million combined.

And Child has since been vocal with his views on Cruise playing the role, due to his less than hulking stature.

In the books, Reacher is a six-foot five giant, weighing 250 lbs, nearly a foot taller than Cruise, while Child describes his hands as being 'like Thanksgiving turkeys'.

Read more: Tom Cruise could earn £50m from space movie

Ritchson, meanwhile, is a more sturdy six-foot two.

Child told The Guardian : “I've got tens of thousands of letters saying they didn't like Cruise because he's too small, basically. Part of Reacher's appeal is that he's very intimidating.

“Even without doing anything, if he walks into a room, people are a little bit uneasy. It was felt that, for all his virtues, Cruise didn't represent that. So the readers were cross from the beginning.”

Dwayne Johnson revealed in 2017 that he had gone for the role, but had lost it to Cruise.

Yup, luv the character. Bout 10yrs ago I went after the role, but Cruise got it. Was great motivation for me to always stay hungry. https://t.co/bwpZfEVIMm — Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) April 12, 2017

In June of 2011, Tom Cruise signed on to play the title character in Christopher McQuarrie's " Jack Reacher ," a crime thriller based on a series of novels by Lee Child . This immediately caused a bit of an uproar among fans , as Cruise didn't match Child's physical description of Reacher in the books. Child was diplomatic during press tours, explaining that Cruise may not look like Reacher, but conveyed the presence of Reacher, which is more important when you have a real-life person playing the part. Jack Reacher is, in Child's words, an unstoppable force — he was once in the military police corps — and few movie stars are better at playing "unstoppable steely determination" than Cruise.

Despite what the fans of Child's novels may have felt, the first "Jack Reacher" film went on to earn $218 million worldwide on a relatively modest budget of $60 million. It was enough to inspire a more expensive, but less well-received sequel in 2016 called "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back," directed by Edward Zwick . The lackluster critical and audience response to the sequel effectively ended the "Jack Reacher" film series. The "Jack Reacher" novels, however, have continued apace, with  the most recent volume  having been published in October of 2021. While Child has slowly backed away from the series (he announced in January of 2020 that he would retire from the series), the novels will reportedly continue under the authorship of his younger brother Andrew Grant.

Though the "Jack Reacher" film franchise may be dead, the continued popularity of the novels has inspired a new TV series, set to debut on Amazon Prime on February 4, 2022, and it will not star Tom Cruise . While Cruise may or may not have been open to playing the role in a TV series, it's likely that the world's biggest movie star, now 59, has far too high a salary for even a streaming service's bloated budget. The real reason Cruise won't be playing Reacher in the new series is simple: The showrunners wanted someone taller.

The Description of Jack Reacher

The first Jack Reacher novel, "Killing Floor," was published in March of 1997. In it, Reacher was described as being a massive force of violence with a tremendous bulk to match. He was described as standing 6'5", sporting a 50-inch chest, and weighing 220 to 250 pounds. Fans were attracted not only to the character's bulk, but also his gruff, violent masculinity. A movie star like Cruise, better known for playing action heroes that are quick, elegant, and spry, was almost the opposite type of "man of action" that fans sought. Cruise stands at 5'7", two inches shorter than his co-star Rosamund Pike, and six inches shorter than the film's villain, played by Werner Herzog. Cruise's height is not an issue in the Jack Reacher films, because McQuarrie still made a taut, fun thriller. But many of the novels' readers, and evidently Child himself, thought that Cruise's onscreen physicality was too much of a departure from the page.

In a 2018 interview with BBC Radio Manchester, Child responded to questions from host Mike Sweeney about Cruise's size and the minor scandal it created. Child said he really enjoyed working with Cruise, and that the actor was very dedicated, took the role incredibly seriously, and even did "crazy things with him" in their downtime. But ultimately, Child admitted "the size of Reacher is really, really important and it's a big component of who he is."

Child reiterated his descriptions of Reacher in his books: "The idea is that when Reacher walks into a room, you're all a little bit nervous just for that first minute. And Cruise, for all his talent, didn't have that physicality." Cruise can be intimidating — see "Magnolia" or "Tropic Thunder" or "Collateral" — but he simply didn't have the literal volume of flesh that Jack Reacher was described as having.

The Newer, Taller Jack Reacher

The first eight-episode season of the upcoming Amazon TV series "Reacher" will enact the events of Child's first novel "Killing Floor," and will star actor Alan Ritchson who has previously played superhero characters like Aquaman (on "Smallville"), Hawk (on "Titans"), and did the motion capture for Raphael the Michael Bay-produced "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" franchise reboot. He began his career as a fashion model, and has also appeared in many other films and TV shows. But the key detail, for the purposes of Jack Reacher, is that Ritchson is 6'2" and broad-shouldered.

Ritchson still doesn't quite match the enormity of Jack Reacher in the novels, but he seems to be closer than Cruise. We'll see if he has the acting chops when "Reacher" arrive on Amazon Prime Video in February

Screen Rant

Rotten tomatoes data confirms alan ritchson is having the best year of his career.

Rising star Alan Ritchson, who plays the title role in Reacher, is in the middle of the best Rotten Tomatoes hot streak of his career so far.

  • Alan Ritchson's movie and television roles in 2024 have earned the best Rotten Tomatoes scores of his career.
  • His record-breaking 2024 movies include Ordinary Angels and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare .
  • Upcoming projects seem to promise Ritchson's continued rise as a movie and television star.

Alan Ritchson is having the best year of his career, according to Rotten Tomatoes data. The star is best known for playing the title role in the Prime Video show Reacher , which is based on the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child and has already been renewed for the upcoming season 3. In addition to being nominated for two Critics Choice Super Awards for his performance, his role on the show has afforded him the opportunity to expand his career into prominent theatrical projects including the action movie blockbuster Fast X .

Long before Reacher season 3 and any other contemporary roles, however, Ritchson began his career in the mid-2000s by playing characters on both the big and small screens including Arthur Curry in The CW's Smallville and Tripp Willinson on 90210 . His longest-running early television role was playing Thad Castle in the sitcom Blue Mountain State , and one of his first big movie gigs was playing Raphael in 2014's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles , a role he reprised in its 2016 sequel Out of the Shadows . However, as his commercial success grows, so does his critical success.

How Tall Alan Ritchson Is (& What Height Jack Reacher Is Supposed To Be)

Alan ritchson's two highest-rated movies on rotten tomatoes released in 2024, alan ritchson is a bona fide movie star.

Despite having appeared in more than a dozen movies before 2024, of the titles in which Ritchson held a major role, his highest-ever scores both come from 2024 movies . His first movie of the year so far was the faith-based drama Ordinary Angels , in which he starred opposite Oscar-winner Hilary Swank. The movie earned a Certified Fresh score of 84% and also boasts his highest-ever audience score with a nearly perfect 99% rating.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire , in which Ritchson played the minor character Gloss, earned a Certified Fresh score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ritchson's banner year continued with a role opposite Henry Cavill, Eiza González, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Henry Golding, and Cary Elwes in Guy Ritchie's The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare . The movie, which is based on Damien Lewis' 2014 nonfiction book Churchill's Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII , earned another Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 71% . By a hair, this beats out his former best-reviewed movie before 2024, which was the 2019 fantasy romance Above the Shadows , a title that earned a score of 70%.

Reacher Season 2 Released In 2024 With An Even Better Rotten Tomatoes Score Than Season 1

Alan ritchson was one of the only returning cast members in reacher season 2.

Being his biggest role, Reacher is responsible for the best Rotten Tomatoes score of Ritchson's career . The show's average Rotten Tomatoes score is 95%, which ties for No. 1 with his appearances in New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine . However, this average comes from the already-strong season 1, which earned a Certified Fresh 92% score, and the even-better season 2, also Certified Fresh at a record 98%. The fact that the season was a Rotten Tomatoes improvement is telling, because Ritchson's Reacher was one of the only returning characters, finding himself in a new setting surrounded by a new ensemble.

The final three episodes of season 2, including the explosive finale, aired in 2024, kicking off the star's stellar year. Hitting that Rotten Tomatoes high in the same year as his two record-breaking movies is even more impressive considering the fact that his Rotten Tomatoes track record on the small screen is even better than what it is on the big screen, as he has never held a major role in a show that earned a Rotten score . Below, see how Reacher ranks among every show of his that has received a score on the review aggregator platform:

Alan Ritchson Will Only Become An Even Bigger Star After 2024

Ritchson's rise is only just beginning.

In addition to Reacher season 3, there are quite a few upcoming Alan Ritchson movies that seem to promise that his Rotten Tomatoes hot streak is only beginning. This includes following up his Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare success by appearing in another military-themed movie, the upcoming Netflix project War Machine . His upcoming roster also includes the Kevin James action-comedy Playdate and The Man with the Bag , in which he will co-star with action legend Arnold Schwarzenegger . Below, see a breakdown of all of Ritchson's upcoming movie and television projects and their production status:

It remains to be seen which of these upcoming Alan Ritchson projects will receive the same kind of critical fanfare as his titles from throughout 2024. However, it seems that his breakout fame and rise in popularity is coinciding with a rise in the quality of his projects and their critical reception. While there is only so high he can climb on the television end, this could mean that his upcoming movies have a chance of breaking his Ordinary Angels record, potentially reaching into the 90% to 100% range on Rotten Tomatoes.
