Saguenay, Québec

Discover splendid villages and breathtaking views!

Québec’s picturesque Saguenay region is a combination of proud heritage and rugged beauty. Travel through the Laurentians admiring the rocky Canadian Shield until the pines divide and the earth plummets down a sheer rock face at the Rivière Saguenay fjord. Formed during the last ice age, the fjord empties into the St. Lawrence River at Tadoussac, the first French trading post in New France. Stay in the landmark Hôtel Tadoussac and cruise the St. Lawrence to spot the largest mammals on earth. Enjoy beautiful panoramic views from the gondola and see the waterfalls that John Keats describes as "the monstrous steep of Montmorency".

The journey homeward presents the opportunity to linger and explore the historic district of Old Québec City. Bask in the European charm of this UNESCO World Heritage treasure. Stroll the cobblestone streets and discover old-world architecture, landmarks and museums, charming boutiques, and exquisite eats. Beautiful landscapes, a rich history and French-Canadian culture … such is La Belle Province!

Experience the Saguenay Fjord

Breathe in the fresh air as you cruise one of the longest fjords in the world. Admire the highest rock formations in the Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park, see beautiful coastal villages, and gaze at the iconic Our-Lady-of-the-Saguenay statue .

Watch Whales on the St. Lawrence River

One of Québec’s best-kept secrets is that Tadoussac is one of the premier places in the world to see whales . During the summer, up to 13 species of cetaceans are drawn to the cold krill-filled waters of the St. Lawrence.

During a 3-hour cruise, you’ll have the chance to spot the telltale tuft of water exploding above the horizon as whales' surface to breathe. Find Minke, Blue (the largest creatures on the planet), Beluga, Humpback, and Fin whales. Humpbacks come close enough that you can spot them from shore!

Visit a 1920s Lumber Village

Travel back to the 1920s with a visit to Val-Jalbert , a restored lumber village complete with over 40 buildings and costumed interpreters. Take the trolley and hear about the village's history and what life was like for the workers. A tour highlight includes a visit to the Ouiatchouan Falls , the energy producer for the papermills machinery. Walk across a glass platform that provides amazing views of the 236-ft-high waterfall, which is taller than Niagara Falls. Ride the cable car to the summit of the mountain and discover the breathtaking views of Lake St-John.

Sainte-Anne-de Beaupré

The St. Anne Basilica is one of the four major shrines in Québec. For more than 350 years people have gathered at the shrine making it the oldest pilgrimage site in North America. The impressive front doors of the church were made by the famous artist Albert Gilles.

Dining with a View

Enjoy the spectacular view of Montmorency Falls and the beautiful gardens with lunch at Manoir Montmorency. Restored after a fire, Manoir Montmorency showcases the original English architecture and chic country style of a summer home built in the late 18th century. See the breathtaking Montmorency Falls via gondola ride, walk the suspension bridge, or climb the panoramic staircase along the cliffs.

Time in Old Québec

Get acquainted with this magical city with a guided tour. Meander the cobblestone streets wandering in and out of shops and boutiques. Whether you’re in the mood for traditional Québec fare or looking for something more European, there is something to appeal to any appetite.

Traditional Sugar Shack

Cozy cabins nestled in the heart of an ancient maple forest, La Sucrerie de la Montagne (Candy of the Mountain) is a Québec heritage site. Celebrating over 40 years as an authentic Québec experience, founder Pierre Faucher and son Stefan are committed to honouring the traditions of Québec. Smell the aromas from the wood-fired bakery, learn how sap is turned into syrup, and enjoy a hearty Québecois meal.

Why This Tour is Great

10 choses a faire a tadoussac

Ça va être long d’attendre jusque là!

Saguenay Fjord Sea Kayaking

Sea Kayaking Skill Level: 3 of 4

Saguenay Fjord, Quebec (Black Feather)

The Saguenay Fjord is a unique place to explore, located between land and sea. This fjord is home to the Saguanay River, which drains Lac Saint-Jean in the Laurentian Highlands eastward into the Saint Lawrence River. The Saguenay experiences tidal flow moving against its downstream current, a tide which is felt as far upstream as Chicoutimi (about 100km). The tides and river current make for an interesting and variable paddling experience. Marine wildlife are often spotted in the colder waters at the mouth of the fjord, near the town of  Tadoussac. Two conservation parks- one continental and the other marine- protect the region.

This trip is run in cooperation with Fjord en Kayak, a local company who has been at the forefront of exploration in the area for over 25 years.

Summers here are long and comfortably warm. Winters are a different story. They are very cold and snowy. Over the year, temperatures range from -3°F to 75°F and are rarely below -22°F or above 85°F.

During September and October, the most popular cruising months, it is recommended to bring layers as temperatures can be pleasant (15 degrees Celsius) and comfortable during the day, but cool in the morning and evening (7 degrees Celsius). A waterproof layer is important as there is usually a chance of rain every day.

If you are going to explore the fjord, take a jacket. No matter what the season is, there are stong winds on the fjord.

The currency in Canada is the Canadian dollar. Credit cards are accepted pretty much everywhere. Shops may give you back change in Canadian currency. There is an ATM across the street from the cruise terminal in front of the Au Pavillon Noir restaurant.

For up-to-date currency exchange rates, go to www.xe.com.

Wireless Internet:

Free WiFi and computers are available for use at the Bagotville Wharf cruise pavilion. You will also find WiFi in almost all restaurants and businesses in Saguenay.

French is the primary language in all of Quebec, but English is often spoken in tourist and service areas. Signage will be in French.

Where You Dock in Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

Ships will dock or anchor at the Bagotville Wharf in La Baie on the shores of Ha! Ha! Bay. While this may seem an unusual name, it can be traced back to a French term. The “haha” means an unexpected obstacle or a dead end. Early explorers in Canada found plenty of both.

Saguenay sees more than 60,000 cruise passengers per year. The pier has even been visited by the RMS Queen Mary II.

Ships are often met by a show troupe that puts on a performance in pioneer dress and are accompanied by local music.

Tours depart from inside the cruise pavilion, where is free WiFi and computers for passenger use as well as a cafe, local artisan shops and Visitor Information Centre.

Taxis and car rentals are available from the pier.

Check out the live webcam at the cruise ship pier.

Getting Around Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

It is about a five minute walk from the pier to La Baie’s village center. There are shops and places to eat here. This is not a large area, so you should be able to cover the few streets without needing a map. If you’re looking for more of a city-feel with more shops and restaurants, you’ll need other transportation to drive into Chicoutimi.

The buses are the hop-on, hop-off type. There are two Saguenay tours that the bus offers. One will take you to the Fjord museum, a shopping center, and a glass maker and sculpture studio.

The second tour goes to the downtown and cultural area of Chicoutimi. There will be a stop at a cathedral, a regional museum and public market. The buses will run about every 20 minutes when ships are in dock and cost approximately $30pp with tickets available onsite.

The cruise pavilion is the place to book a taxi. There you can also choose a taxi that will tour you around the region or just take you where you want to go.

Rental Cars

Again, the cruise pavilion is the place to rent a car. You will need to be at least 21 years old and present a valid, unexpired government-issued photo driver’s license. You will also need a major credit card. Driving is on the right-hand side of the road.

Shopping In Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

There is no shortage of shopping in Saguenay. The city has five downtown centers, Arvida, Chicoutimi, Jonquiere, Kenogami and La Baie (where the ship docks). Each city center has shopping and boutiques and restaurants. From La Baie to the furthest center of Jonquiere, it is approximately a 30 minute drive.  Chicoutimi is more of a “city” and has the largest number of offerings in one area.

If you’re looking for some souvenirs, much of what the province of Quebec is known for is food related, so keep a look out for local maple syrup, cheese from a fromagerie, sweets and baked goods from a boulangerie, especially a creamy, delicious type of fudge called sucre a la creme, wine and other local alcohol.

This small shopping complex closest to the port, has men’s, women’s and children’s clothes, a bank, liquor store, dollar store, jewelry store, home store and groceries.  There are also often pop-up stores featuring items from local artisans.

Place du Royaume – 17 kms from pier in Chicoutimi

The largest shopping mall in the area, Place du Royaume has brand name and local stores including Walmart, Sephora, Tommy Hilfiger, Old Navy and a food court with McDonalds, KFC and Starbucks.

Route des Artisans

The Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean Crafts Corporation has created a “craftsmans route” comprised of more than 70 artisans who specialize in different materials such as wood, glass, textiles, metal, ceramic, leather and more.

While many artisans are in the Chicoutimi area, the featured artists that are closest to the port are:

Conception Cuir , a leather artist who makes bags and wood and leather furniture. They are located a 4 minute walk south of the pier on Rue Victoria in La Baie.

L’atelier-boutique a Moi de Moi, does beautiful silkscreen printing on shirts, cushions, bags and much more, all inspired by the nature and animals of the region.

Click this link to a see list of artisans , or here to a list of maps where all the shops are located.

Bon Delices et Peches – 18 km from pier, in Chicoutimi

This delicious shop has been making their own chocolate onsite for 20 years and also offers gelato.  It will be hard to not try one of everything!

Dining In Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

Quebec’s cuisine has its roots in 16th century French dishes. Today’s cuisine has been influenced by Quebec’s history of fur trading, the seasonality of ingredients, and what early settlers traded. Poutine is distinctly Canadian and is a mix of fries, gravy and cheese curds. Pea soup, tourtiere (a meat pie), and feves au lard (beans, bacon and molasses) are also dishes that are traditional to the area. Quebec is the largest producer of maple syrup in the world. They have also created over 700 different kinds of cheese. The region also has the mother lode of blueberries, and you will even find them in breakfast sausage. You will find no shortage of restaurants and unique and delicious food in Saguenay.

Know that when ordering in restaurants, if you ask for an entree it is an appetizer in French. A main course is called a plat. Also, “dinner” is often eaten at mid-day, while supper is an evening meal.

Restaurants Close to the Port

Bistro cafe summum la baie – located just outside port, european, north american, vegetarian, french, bbq.

This busy bistro offers delicious breakfast lunches and suppers with local offerings of seafood, cheeses and beer. Staff are friendly and there is lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Enjoy a coffee and desert or a full meal. They also have a location in Chicoutimi.

La Grange aux Hiboux – 6 minute walk south from port

Canadian, french.

With views of the fjord, this small bistro uses local ingredients to inspire their soups, salads, and main dishes. Open in the evenings only.

O’Gelato et Cacao – 3 min walk from port

Cafe, ice cream.

Stop by this shop to grab a treat to enjoy on your walk around town. Reviewers say the gelato rivals those you’d find in Italy. For a cooler day, the hot chocolate is made with melted chocolate, or have a tea or coffee. Pastries and local products are also available.

Top Restaurants in the Saguenay Area

Restaurant le bergerac – 3919 rue saint-jean, jonquiere – 25 kms from pier, european, caribbean, french cuisine.

In business since 1995, this small restaurant has an extensive wine list and a “creative fine dining” menu. Located in an old home in downtown Jonquiere, they grow their own herbs for their dishes. They serve Jamaican jerk-style mahi-mahi, filet mignon with wild mushrooms and Yukon Gold potatoes.

Boefish – 1303 boul. Talbot, Saguenay – 17 kms from pier

Steakhouse, mediterranean, barbecue.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Boefish (@boefish_restaurants)

This upscale restaurant specializes in steaks and fresh Mediterranean fish. The octopus salad and lobster pasta are favorites. They also have surf and turf platters to share. Try the IPA beer or an offering on the extensive wine list to pair with dinner. This restaurant is open for dinner only.

Temaki Sushi Bar – 317 Racine Street E, Chicoutimi, 19 kms from pier

Sushi, japanese.

There is an emphasis on sushi, but you can also get miso soup, cucumber salad, edamame and desserts as well as Waygu steaks and sausages. They have tempura veggie egg rolls and a spicy Japanese crab. The smoked salmon roll is also recommended. Everything is fresh and made-to-order and the restaurant is open at 2pm Wednesday to Saturday if you fancy a late lunch.

Things To Do in Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

Saguenay fjord.

At 146 miles long, Saguenay fjord is one of the ten longest fjords in the world, with a long glacial valley and rocky cliffs. It is the only inhabited fjord in North America. The area surrounding the fjord is rugged and mountainous, with cliffs up to 1,150 feet high.  Cruises will offer tours like Zodiac rides in the fjord or get the view from above in a seaplane.

Musee du Fjord – 3346 boul. de la Grande-Baie Sud, La Baie, 4.6 kms south of pier

Here you can learn all about the Saguenay Fjord in a fun and interactive environment. You will be able to both see and touch some of the fjord’s living organisms. There are multimedia exhibits and 3-D films. There are 650 types of sea life in the aquarium. Wander by yourself, or join a guided walk at low tide to dig for minerals and plants. Tickets are available to purchase online.

Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay – 45 kms (40 min drive) from pier

This magnificent park is a wonder to explore. If you don’t have the time on your cruise stop, you should try to get back when you do have time to explore. The park offers the opportunity to be in the middle of nature at its best. You can backpack, hike, kayak, fish, sail and bike. This area has extraordinary chances for wildlife watching or an expedition into the backcountry. Take a look at this tour which leaves from the cruise terminal.

A nearby unrelated information desk told us that it had closed for the season. We were refunded almost immediately but why take a booking in the first place? We were left at a loose end in a remote area for the rest of the day. Read more Written November 27, 2023

He gave us an interesting historical overview and how the region became known as Saguenay and events that occurred in the region. We then traveled out to the National Park. We had light snow so in our mind made it a picture postcard( we were the last tour of the season)! Don’t hesitate to book with these folks. Unfortunately our cruise ship was not allowed into port so we had to cancel the rental. Out point of contact, DENNIS, was most helpful in making the reservation with advice on bikes versus size and capability. DENNIS was even more helpful with the unfortunate cancellation and assured return of all funds. We will be sure to rent from Saguenay Guided Tours for our next visit to Saguenay. WELL DONE DENNIS! The company was very responsive to my emails and provided great directions on locating the meeting point from our cruise ship. The driver and guides (Michel, Emily and Bob) on the small tour bus were very engaging, informative and friendly. Their enthusiasm made the trip even more enjoyable. We were fortunate the day we visited as it was a beautiful October day and made the walk in the park refreshing and with beautiful scenery. We highly recommend booking a tour with Tours Aventure Fjord et Monde. Read more Written October 30, 2023
  • DianeC610 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Huge ripoff and totally irresponsible with the safety and well being of its customers Our guide/driver dropped us off in a remote forest, and told us to follow the signs. We had no guide or cell phone service. This was extremely irresponsible of the tour operator. I am 71, and my husband is 76. We did not go to any Center, or to the ha ha pyramid. After our brief hike alone in the forest with bears and other wildlife, which, by the way, looked nothing like their photographs, he picked us up and drove us back to the ship. We were on a cruise and we book this excursion with Denis (who speaks English and Spanish), and the whole experience was great. We were 26 in our group, and he gave us an excelent service before we got there, while booking and planning everything, and during the tour! He really made the whole experience a great one! It was a real pleasure being in Sagney with him and his team. I will definitely recommend this tour! Read more Written October 16, 2023
  • Rhino2525 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Bus issues and how management dealt with the issues after the tour.... I like to book smaller group, independent from the cruise line as we have enjoyed more than the larger buses with 60 plus people in the past. From the positive reviews, we had high hopes for this tour but it fell short of our expectations. We exited the ship and met at the designated area at 12pm for our 12:30 departure as we like to be on time. I approached a gentleman to ensure that we were in the correct area showing him my printed-out receipt / ticket as there were multiple buses. He said that all 5 of the buses were for that tour and that I needed to queue in the line at the adjacent kiosk manned by two other gentlemen to get actual tickets for one of the buses for my wife and I. After waiting for about 10 minutes in line, I was then told that I didn't need to be in line as I already had a ticket and this line was for people trying to purchase tickets. So, I was told to go back over near the buses and wait. So right off the bat there seemed to be a little chaos in the boarding process. After waiting about 20 minutes (now 12:30pm when the tour was supposed to start), one of the tour guides told a group of customers that were waiting to follow her to one of the buses (#4) and board. We unfortunately were getting a replacement bus that the operator had to rent to replace a bus that had mechanical issues the day before. One third of the rows faced side-way and the windows were either dirty or some other material, the customers couldn't see out of them. My wife and I were lucky as we were in the front as facing forward but there were some very unhappy customers that they couldn't see out of the windows. Bocuse of the exhaust, the tour guide said that we could not open the windows but several of us got nauseous while the door was open and there were a few open windows. Finally, the door was closed and all the windows were closed so the exhaust fumes were no longer a problem but now the bus was very warm as it was an uncharacteristically warm Canadian day and the mini-bus AC system didn't seem to be able to get it cool. In addition, the microphone / sound system was very poor in this bus so passengers past the first few rows couldn't hear the guide clearly so they started having their own conversations (and fairly loud). At this point, several customers got louder and verbal about the bus condition with one couple actually departing the bus because they didn't want to be stuck in the sideways seat looking out a window that they couldn't see through. The tour guide reiterated the story that this was substitute and apologized. I made a comment that I was not happy and it would reflect in my review of the tour which the guide took personally and upset her (was not meant at her but instead the condition of the bus). I was quiet the rest of the day. Finally, at 1:00pm (30 minutes past start time because the operator kept trying to find 2 more people to sit in the undesirable seats but none wanted to), we departed. On with some positives of the tour, we did see some interesting scenic things including the paintings under the covered bridge and the National Park including a stop that overlooked the valley. The leaves on the trees turning were very picturesque. We did get to enjoy the views. My main issue to that point was on the condition of this substitute bus. When we returned to port, the operator actually asked me how did we enjoy the tour and I gave him my very honest opinion of the bus used for our tour. He reiterated the story of the mechanical breakdown of his regular bus and how he had to get this substitute. I told him that he had other disgruntled customers also but he just happened to ask me. He offered to refund one of the two tickets as compensation for the issues and I said that was fair compensation. After waiting a week, I sent an email reminder of his offer and got no reply. I waited another five days and sent another email asking for status. I told him that I had not written my review yet as I was waiting to see if he would follow through with his partial refund. We all know that things happen and it is how the management responds says a lot about the company. His reply was to get aggressive in his reply and tell me that he would not be honoring his agreement and that I could write my review and he would respond to it. I was hopeful to have written a review that said that we had bus issues that made the experience less that desirable but the management / owner handled it wonderfully. Unfortunately, this didn't end up being the case. In summary, this tour had a lot of potential as the places it was visiting really allowed a passenger that only had one day in Saguenay to see a lot. I am sure with a tour on one of the regular buses without issues, it would have been fine but that was not our experience that unfortunate day. Sadly, the owner/management didn't follow through to compensate for the bus issues and instead took an aggressive stance towards his customer. Read more Written October 14, 2023
  • 353dorothym 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Not great Pretty disappointing overall. We were happy that it was a small 20 person bus. However, we got stuck with the seat over the axle. I spent the whole tour with my knees in my face. Made my hips very sore as I am not a spring chicken anymore. Good information about the area given however the tour itself lacked a lot. Stop in town, stop at a nativity scene area with one toilet for each gender. That took a while to get through as other buses were stopping too. Stop at a covered bridge. Then a stop at the National Park for some overlooks of the Fjord. On the drive back (about 1 1/2 hours) we asked twice for the air conditioning to be turned on. It was sunny and the bus got hot. The windows did not open. The driver turned on the air for approximately 2 or 3 minutes then turned it off. While what we saw was pretty overall the tour was a disappontment. We would have been better off staying in town and walking around. Read more Written October 13, 2023

  • Mark D 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Interesting Scenic Tour We were on an NCL cruise and booked this tour independently. The meet location was easy to find just yards from where the ship was moored. The people from the tour company were expecting us and told us which bus we were on. It was a little tricky finding our bus, since there were quite a few tour buses going out that morning and our bus had not been clearly numbered. Our guide was a French Canadian lady (Helena???) who spoke really good english. The tour itself was interesting and we were taken to some very pretty locations, particularly overlooking the fjord. We thought the tour was good value and the company made sure we were back in plenty of time before the ship sailed. I'm not sure there is too much to do in La Baie other than taking a tour. 15 Best Things to Do in Saguenay (Quebec, Canada)

Saguenay is somewhat of an oasis, sitting on the Saguenay River in the rift valley of Saguenay Graben. It is quite picturesque that sits in the middle of Northern Quebec, and is an excellent place to get away from it all.

The city and its surroundings are made up of lakes, rivers, hills and valleys, making it peaceful place for a holiday destination. Plus, it is not as popular as other cities in Quebec, which adds to its charm. There are three boroughs in Saguenay, all of which have something to offer visitors. But all-in-all, these are the best things to do in Saguenay :

1. Tour a massive pulp mill

La Pulperie De Chicoutimi

Once the largest in the world, the La Pulperie de Chicoutimi – Regional Museum is a must. Tour the massive pulp mill and get immersed in the history of the pulp industry.

Go on a guided tour of the pulperie and learn about the Chicoutimi trading post. There are over 26,000 items and works of art displayed at the museum.

La Pulperie de Chicoutimi – Regional Museum also often hosts special exhibits that are well worth checking out. Also check their schedule for cultural activities and programs for the kids.

2. Explore the outdoors

Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park

Saguenay is the gateway to the magnificent Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park, which is one of the best places to explore in Quebec. Not only does is there lots to do, but the scenery is spectacular.

Feel like you are right in the pages of a National Geographic as you hike, ski, sail or kayak through the park. Take in the incredible scenery at any time of the year.

Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park is also a great place to go bird watching or look for other wildlife. Things you could see while exploring the park are moose, beaver, porcupine and even beluga whale.

3. Stare at marine life

Musée Du Fjord

You don’t have to go fishing to do this. You can head to the aquarium at the Musée du Fjord.

The aquarium is dedicated to the Ha! Ha! Bay and all things living in it. Stare at the marine life or touch them in its touch pool.

There is also an interactive screen where you can ask questions to and have a conversation with some of the fish. For something truly special, visit during feeding time.

4. Touch insects

Vivarium

This can also be done at the Musée du Fjord thanks to its vivarium. The vivarium displays both exotic insects and those native to Quebec.

There are both naturalized species and live specimens to look at and even touch at the museum. See big hairy spiders, beautiful butterflies, stick insects and grasshoppers.

Other species you can see at the vivarium include hermit crabs, frogs, salamanders and even scorpions

5. Head to the mountains

Mont Lac-Vert

Adventurists will definitely want to head to Mont Lac-Vert while visiting Saguenay. This winter wonderland is on the southwest outskirts of the city at the foothills on the Laurentians.

Skiing, snowboarding, tubing, snowshoeing and fat biking are all offered at Mont Lac-Vert. The ski resort also hosts special events.

The ski resort features 240 metres of vertical drops, 20 slopes and designated snowshoe trails. It also boasts the highest tube slide in the region and is known for its fantastic night skiing.

6. Enjoy a park

Parc De La Rivière-du-Moulin

At any time of the year there are things to do at Parc de la Rivière-du-Moulin. And no matter when you visit, you can enjoy hiking or walking around this lovely park.

There are 35 kilometres of maintained trails at Parc de la Rivière-du-Moulin, 7.2 kilometres of which are open in the winter. If you would prefer to cycle, mountain biking is also allowed.

Visit with the family and enjoy a picnic while watching the kids play in the playground. You can also hire a boat and go canoeing or kayaking, or visit in the winter for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice skating.

7. Snap photos of jet fighters

Air Defence Museum

If you are interested in aviation and jet fighters, visit the Air Defence Museum. The museum happens to be the only aviation museum in the province!

Snap photos of jet fighters like the North American F-86 Sabre, CF-116 Freedom Fighter, Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck and Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23. Or look at the Piasecki H-21 helicopter or Canadair CT-133 Silver Star jet trainer.

You can also wander around the museum to learn about Quebec’s military aviation history. If you are lucky, you can go on a tour of the base itself, which is still active.

8. Visit a pyramid

Pyramid Of Ha! Ha!

It is not even close to the pyramids in Egypt, but Pyramid of Ha! Ha! is still an interesting monument to visit. The pyramid was built to commemorate the Saguenay Flood that took place in 1996.

The pyramid is named after the Ha! Ha! River and actually sits right near the banks of it. The 21 metre high pyramid was built by the citizens of the La Baie borough.

In the summer, climb the stairs inside to the observatory to enjoy sweeping views of the bay and the river. There is also a surrounding park that offers live entertainment for the entire family.

9. Go back in time

The Val-Jalbert Historical Village

Visit The Val-Jalbert Historical Village to go back to 1927. The town seems to be frozen in this time, complete with staff in costumes.

It is a genuine company town complete with a post office, convent school, general store and pulp mill. After wandering around the village, jump on the cable car and go to the top of the mountain.

Discover what it was like to live in the village and work in the pulp mill in the 1920s. Enjoy the views of the breath taking Ouiatchouan Falls, or go on a bike along the Canyon Trail.

10. Walk along a boardwalk

Chicoutimi’s Port

Enjoy the views and the breeze while walking along the boardwalk at Chicoutimi’s Port Area. The one-kilometre long boardwalk is lined with restaurants and bars, but it also just a nice place for a stroll.

In the summer, there is often live entertainment and even a park with a cooling off area for the kids. Visit in June and enjoy the Beauce Carnaval or in July for the Saguenay Beer Festival of the World.

The port also has some historical significance and is home to some historic buildings. It has been refurbished and re-landscaped, making it a top landmark.

11. Gaze at animals

Zoo Sauvage De St-Félicien

Although Zoo Sauvage de St-Félicien is nearly a two-hour drive outside of the city, but it is well worth visiting. It is one of the largest zoos in the province and is a great place to gaze at animals.

The zoo is predominately dedicated to conservation of wildlife of the boreal climate, though there is a plethora of other animals living here. One of the main draws is its polar bears, where you can view these amazing creatures underwater.

There are around 80 species of animals at the zoo, including wolverines, Canadian lynx, grizzly bears, northern elk, Amur tigers and Siberian ibex. You can also see caribou while canoeing around Lac Montagnais.

12. Spend a day at the beach

Pointe-Taillon National Park

Drive around one hour west of the city to the Pointe-Taillon National Park. The park is a fabulous place to enjoy a day at the beach.

Pointe-Taillon National Park sits along the north shore of Lac Saint-Jean. Spend the day lounging at the beach or enjoy swimming, paddle boarding, canoeing or kayaking.

If you are a cycler, the park has a 45 kilometre cycling network that runs along the lake and the Péribonka River. If you want more beach time, there are 72 campsites, some of which can only be reached on foot or by bike.

13. Have fun at a theme park

Parc Mille Lieux De La Colline

The Parc Mille Lieux de la Colline is fantastic for the whole family. The theme park lies within the foothills of the mountains and is a fun place to spend an afternoon.

Slide, climb or roll down the Montagne or hop on the Loco le Train and go for a ride around the park. If you want a little bit more adventure, find your way through the natural cedar tree maze or race on the Piste de Course race track.

There is also a water park, which is great on a hot summer day. Parc Mille Lieux de la Colline also features a village with shops and places to eat.

14. Go on a cruise

Saguenay River

Get on board a ship and cruise around the Lac Saint-Jean. The lake is extremely picturesque, as is its surrounding scenery, and a cruise is the perfect way to take it all in.

Boat cruises around the lake are offered in the afternoon and in the evening. A dinner cruise is highly recommended, which lasts two-hours and ends with a comedy performance.

Cruises are also offered along the Saguenay River where you can enjoy sweeping views of the 350 metre high cliffs that surround you. This is a magnificent way to enjoy the Saguenay Fjord.

15. Enjoy local food

Tourtière

Saguenay is all about cheese and is actually known for it. Discover this local delicacy by going to local markets and cheese shops or by ordering cheese and crackers at a local café.

Grab some cheese and a French baguette and enjoy a picnic lunch. Don’t forget to all add a blueberry pie to your basket, which is another local treat.

In August, be sure to sample chocolate covered blueberries, while in the winter try tourtière (meat pie). There are plenty of ways to surprise your taste buds in Saguenay.
