It’s in the Genes: Thibau Nys Adds to Family Success with Double Stage Wins in Tour De Hongrie

Young lidl-trek rider shows same class as father sven nys, nabbing back-to-back victories..

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

He’s got one of the most famous surnames in Belgian cycling, but Thibau Nys is a lot more than just his father’s son.

The 21 year old grew up in the glare of the spotlight surrounding his father Sven , one of the best cyclo cross riders in history.

That’s led to inevitable comparisons and unenviable pressure, but he’s forged his own career on road and off-road.

A past junior and under 23 world cyclocross champion, he also won the under 23 European road race championships in 2021.

Last autumn he took the opening round of the UCI cyclocross World Cup in Waterloo, the USA.

His road career is also flourishing. Stage winner in the Tour de Romandie in April, he took stage wins in the Tour de Hongrie Friday and Saturday, and leads the race overall heading into the final day.

He beat accomplished UAE Team Emirates rider Marc Hirschi and 33 others to triumph on Saturday, winning with style in the yellow jersey.

“I don’t know if I ever had this feeling in my legs before,” the Lidl-Trek competitor said after his latest success.

“I was dying completely in the last 150 meters. I looked back and saw Hirschi coming. I was a bit afraid he would was going to come over, but I think we felt the same, we kept the same pace.

“I can’t describe how much I want to thank my team, they did everything so so good to put me in the right position. They also gave me this confidence. This teamwork, I can finish it off. I’m just a small part in this victory, it’s as much from the team as it is from me.”

Nys beat another seasoned UAE Team Emirates rider to triumph on Friday’s third stage. He outsprinted Diego Ulissi and Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) after the duo reached the finish together.

That saw him rocket 53 places in the overall standings into pole position, four seconds ahead of Ulissi. He extended that lead further to 14 seconds on Saturday.

“We went quite fast already in the beginning of the climb and I think it put everyone on the limit already,” he said of the latest stage.

“In a perfect scenario I wanted to have my sprint a bit more explosive, but the pace was so high that I could not really accelerate and it was a long way to the finish line. It was really hard, it was painful.”

The Tour de Hongrie concludes on Sunday with a lumpy stage from Siófok to Pécs. Relatively flat early on, there are four climbs inside the final 65km, including two seconds category ascents in Pécs plus an uphill finish.

The route of Tour de Hongrie 2024 has been revealed!

Five stages, 851 kilometres, almost 8,000 metres of climbing, 10 categorised climbs, two bunch sprints and two iconic summit finishes await the participants of the 45th Tour de Hongrie. The official route of Hungary’s biggest cycling race was presented on 5 March at Budapest Music Center with live national TV coverage.

tour de hongrie gc

Some interesting facts about the route:

  • The five-day-long ProSeries event includes two flat stages, one hilly stage, one medium-mountain stage and one mountain stage.
  • In addition to the capital, the competition covers nine counties: Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Hajdú-Bihar, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Heves, Pest, Fejér, Somogy, Tolna and Baranya.
  • The caravan will cross 81 municipalities: 9 of them will host a stage start or finish, while 12 of them will host intermediate sprints.
  • There will be 10 categorized climbs along the route. Besides the 1st category climb of Kékestető, cyclists will have to tackle four 2nd and five 3rd category climbs.
  • Over the 854 km of the race, the riders will have to face 7871 m of elevation – the most since the race’s return to the international calendar in 2015! It’s the same as the height of the 20th tallest mountain in the world.

The 45th edition of Tour de Hongrie will feature eight WorldTeams, eight ProTeams, three Continental Teams and the National Team of Hungary . You can find the list of the participating teams here.

The official route:

8 May 2024 – Stage 1

Karcag – Hajdúszoboszló (166 km, flat stage)

The field of the 45th Tour de Hongrie will start from Karcag, the capital of Nagykunság, on 8 May 2024. The caravan will pass Lake Tisza and Hortobágy National Park before arriving to Hajdúszoboszló, where it will complete three laps of a circuit of almost 20 kilometres. The stage includes 3 intermediate sprints, but almost no elevation gains. The first yellow jersey of the race will most likely belong to a sprinter.

Karcag has already welcomed the Hungarian Tour ten times - most recently in 2022, when the second stage started from the largest town in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county. Karcag has hosted two stage finishes in its recent history, with German Manuel Porzner winning in 2015 and Lithuanian Gediminas Kaupas in 2016.

Hajdúszoboszló, the city of spas, is a returning guest in the history of Tour de Hongrie, and this year it is a special participant of the event. This is the fifth time since 2018 that a stage will be held in the town of the , with the winners so far being Andriy Bratashchuk (2018), Alois Kankovsky (2019), Jakub Mareczko (2020) and Fabio Jakobsen (2022).

9 May 2024 – Stage 2

Tokaj – Kazincbarcika (162 km, flat stage)

The second stage starts from the heart of Hungary's most famous wine region. After the start in Tokaj, the peloton turns first to Zemplén and then to Kazincbarcika. The stage includes two categorised climbs and 1,000 m of ascent. The hilly terrain provides excellent attacking opportunities for breakaways, but the biggest favourites of the stage will again be the sprinters.

Tokaj will host a stage start for the first time in 30 years. The last time the peloton rode past the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers was in 2022, when Fabio Jakobsen won one of the most exciting echelon stages in the race’s history.

Kazincbarcika will be a well-established participant in the Hungarian Tour with its sixth stage finish since 2006. Due to the proximity of the Slovakian border and the participation of Peter Sagan, the organisers are expecting many Slovak fans in the city of colours.

tour de hongrie gc

10 May 2024 – Stage 3

Kazincbarcika – Gyöngyös-Kékestető (183 km, mountain stage)

The Queen Stage of the race starts where we left off: in Kazincbarcika. The riders will pass through Eger before arriving to the foot of the Mátra Mountains and finishing at the top of Kékestető after 2700 metres of elevation. On Hungary's most iconic climb, the GC favourites will battle it out for victory.

For the fifth time, „Kolorcity” will be the home of a stage start and a finish in the same year. The last time this happened was in 2022, when Dylan Groenewegen triumphed on the streets of the city. Kazincbarcika will host the Tour for the twelfth time in total.

Kékestető is the most well-known and most difficult climb of Hungary. From Mátrafüred, the 11 km, 5.5% climb will be tackled for the thirteenth time in our race’s history. The exceptionally steep last three kilometres gave us many historic moments in the last few years, including the last-minute overtake of Antonio Tiberi against Eddie Dunbar in 2022, or Attila Valter’s frenetic victory in 2020.

tour de hongrie gc

11 May 2024 – Stage 4

Budapest – Etyek (167 km, hilly stage)

A particularly tricky stage awaits the peloton on 11 May. From Heroes' Square, the caravan will head towards Andrássy Avenue, Chain Bridge and Várkert Bazaar before leaving the capital and heading towards the hills of Etyek via the Budapest-Balaton Cycle Route. Three categorised climbs, 1500 m of elevation and a slightly uphill finish will make the stage unpredictable.

The capital of Hungary will host a stage start for the 39th time – a unique record in the history of Tour de Hongrie. The local fans will be able to observe the first kilometres in Budapest, before the race heads towards „the Heart of Pannonia”.

Etyek is the only new finishingcity this year, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t already had a taste of the Tour: GPMs and intermediate sprints were held here in 2022 and 2023. The final 1,5 km; 6,1% climb can be a problem for the pure sprinters, but it’s too easy for the climbers, making this finish especially exciting.

tour de hongrie gc

12 May 2024 – Stage 5

Siófok – Pécs (173 km, medium-mountain stage)

Tour de Hongrie 2024 will be decided on the mountains of Mecsek. The riders will start the stage from Siófok, before climbing more than 2300 metres of elevation and arriving in front of Zoo Pécs – just like in 2023. The riders must tackle the infamous Bárány road (1,9 km; 11%) three times before the winner of the General Classification is crowned.

The City of Summer on the shores of Lake Balaton, Siófok will host the caravan for the 19th time. The race has passed the foot of the famous Water Tower three times during Grand Departs: the first stage of Tour de Hongrie started here in 2018, 2019 and 2021.

Tour de Hongrie returned to Pécs in 2023 after an absence of almost twenty years, and in no uncertain terms: the stage that ended with Marc Hirschi's victory was one of the highlights of the race in every aspect. The final circuit will be shorter this time, but the most important part will remain the same: Bárány road will be a worthy home for the final chapter of the 45th Hungarian Tour.

PREVIEW | Tour de Hongrie 2024 - After Giro snub, Wout Poels and Emanuel Buchmann main favourites for GC

From the 8th to the 12th of May the riders tackle the Tour de Hongrie . The small central-European country hosts opportunities for several types of riders and presents a few stars on it's startlist to fight for the sprint victories. We preview the race ahead.

PREVIEW | Tour de Hongrie 2024 - After Giro snub, Wout Poels and Emanuel Buchmann main favourites for GC

The race begins with a 164-kilometer stage that will feature no climbs. A pan-flat day ends in a city whose name is hard to spell... But the sprinters surely will not mind that; they will have the opportunity to take the stage win and the first leader's jersey.

Profiles & Route Tour de Hongrie 2024

PREVIEW | Tour de Hongrie 2024 - After Giro snub, Wout Poels and Emanuel Buchmann main favourites for GC

The second stage of the race is also suited to the sprinters, but it isn't as easy as the opening day. In the final 30 kilometers there are two hilltops where some riders may be dropped and it may affect those who fight for the stage win.

PREVIEW | Tour de Hongrie 2024 - After Giro snub, Wout Poels and Emanuel Buchmann main favourites for GC

The queen stage? It could be... It is the longest day of the race and it is the most difficult summit finish of the race. A stage with two climbs, but all the attention is in it's end. The climb is 12.1 kilometers at 5.6% but it's most difficult section is clearly the final 3 kilometers. This will create important differences for the overall classification and could be decisive.

Final startlist Tour de Hongrie 2024 with Peter Sagan, Mark Cavendish, Marc Hirschi, Sam Welsford, Thibau Nys and Dylan Groenewegen

PREVIEW | Tour de Hongrie 2024 - After Giro snub, Wout Poels and Emanuel Buchmann main favourites for GC

In stage 4 the battle for the sprinters returns. However this is a very tricky finaly. Into Etyek, at the end of a mostly flat day, the riders find a hilltop which is 1.3 kilometers at 5.8% - it isn't too difficult, but surely it won't suit all of the fast men.

profile tourdehongrie2024stage5

The final day of racing is quite hard. The first two thirds of the stage are flat but the final third is very difficult. The riders will climb twice to Pecs which is 5.8Km at 6.8% but it's first 2 kilometers average 10%; the race can be destroyed here on any of them. However then the riders will still go up it once again, but have the finish line early in the climb, this one will be 2.3 kilometers long at 8.7% (but featuring quite steeper ascents).

Prediction Tour de Hongrie 2024 overall classification:

*** Emanuel Buchmann , Wout Poels ** Thibau Nys , Diego Ulissi , Yannis Voisard * Marc Hirschi, Ben Zwiehoff, Igor Arrieta, Harm Vanhoucke, Damien Howson, Kamiel Bonneu

Pick : Emanuel Buchmann

PREVIEW | Giro d'Italia 2024 stage 5 - Third sprint battle awaits us featuring Jonathan Milan, Tim Merlier, Kaden Groves and Olav Kooij

Peter Sagan: Cycling icon to make stunning road racing return in Tour of Hungary after heart surgery

Becky Hart

Published 07/05/2024 at 18:21 GMT

Peter Sagan is set to resume his road racing career from Wednesday at the Tour of Hungary. One of the greatest sprinters of all time, the Slovakian initially retired at the end of last season to focus on mountain biking. He had the aim of competing in that discipline at the Paris Olympics, but his preparations have been thrown into disarray after two surgeries.

Very good route given the Hungarian topography, a shame that there are a) hardly any decent climbers/puncheurs and b) half of them are on UAE.

Mark Cavendish Takes Sprint Win in Stage 2 of the Tour de Hongrie

M ark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) was first to the line in a bunch sprint for the stage 2 win in Kazincbarcika at the Tour de Hongrie. His team masterfully led him into the final 200 meters, where Cav launched ahead of Dylan Groenewegen (Team Jayco AlUla) and Jon Aberasturi (Euskaltel-Euskadi).

The stage took on 162 km from Tokaj to Kazincbarcika. There were two category 3 climbs and three sprints.

After the lead group was reeled back by the peloton, sprinters from Astana, Lidl-Trek, and Euskaltel-Euskadi led the group into the final two kilometers. But Astana proved dominant into the final 500 meters to ensure Cav’s win.

“I’m really happy with it,” Cavendish said in a post-race interview. “Yesterday, we didn’t quite hit the lead-out properly. It was super good, and everyone committed 100 percent yesterday, but we were just a bit eager and a bit too soon.

“We talked and talked about that to rectify it today. It was a completely different finish today, no big boulevard or corners to make it technical, and we executed it exactly how we wanted it. I’m so happy.”

Even though the Giro d’Italia is getting most of the press and attention this month, the 45th edition of the Tour de Hongrie is well worth some attention. The tour includes five stages, 854 kilometers, nearly 8,000 meters of ascent, 10 categorized climbs, two classic sprinter stages, and two mountain finishes.

Cavendish will certainly be riding this high into the rest of the race. And he has perhaps the biggest support team in the world rallying to see him not only find victory in Hungary, but also to find one more stage win in the Tour de France this summer. The 34-time Tour de France stage winner will have another shot at glory starting on June 29 in Florence, Italy.

The Manx Missile outsprinted Dylan Groenewegen for his second win of the season.

Peter Sagan marks brief return to road racing in Tour de Hongrie

Former world champion looking for racing kilometres after heart surgery layoff

Peter Sagan joins the Pierre Baguette team for the Tour de Hongrie

Peter Sagan is preparing to make his surprise return to road racing at the Tour de Hongrie on Wednesday with the Slovakian team Pierre Baguette.

The three-time world champion ended his road career with TotalEnergies last year and turned his focus to racing mountain bikes to try to qualify for the Paris Olympics . However, his attempts were halted when he experienced abnormal heart rhythms and had to undergo surgery in February.

Sagan came back quickly after the first procedure but then relapsed and had a second surgery in March , and lost a lot of fitness during the month-long recovery, he said.

"Now I'm already three weeks on the bike and back in training," Sagan said last week in a video on Cyclism'Actu .

Peter Sagan to undergo heart procedure Peter Sagan confident he will be back to training 15 days after latest heart ‘pit stop’ Peter Sagan to undergo second heart surgery

At the Tour de Hongrie , he said, "My expectation is to have some race kilometres, and for sure if I finish the Tour of Hungary it will put me at another level. I have no big ideas to do something because I know it's very hard - there are some riders who are training from October, November, and December and did big preparation before this race, and I'm out of this because of the heart surgery and recovery. I lost a lot of preparation.

"After that, I'll see how I feel - if my problem is solved or it's going to come back. Nobody knows. I have no expectations. The next plan I'm going to do I'll set after Tour of Hungary."

Sagan is reuniting with his brother, former pro Juraj, and former Bora-Hansgrohe director Ján Valach in the Pierre Baguette team.

"I'm very happy to be part of this team and to help the young guys," Sagan said. "I'm from Slovakia and now this is the biggest team in Slovakia. My brother is working in the team and another DS in the team Ján Valach, we did like 10 years together in road cycling WorldTour.

"I'm very happy to be in this environment and maybe give some experience I had in my career to the young guys and see how they grow. Maybe to [help] some rider from this team make it in cycling."

The Tour de Hongrie begins on Wednesday with a pan-flat stage from Karcag to Hajdúszoboszló.

"I know that the first two stages are really flat for the sprinters and then the third stage has some climbs. After that, there are some stages up and down. There are many for the fast riders. I can expect some competition because a lot of WorldTour riders are coming. I'm also happy to see some of my friends from the old years," Sagan said.

He'll be reunited on the start line by former sprint rivals Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco AlUla), Sam Welsford (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Elia Viviani (Ineos Grenadiers).
