We recommend that you take special care in choosing your equipment because it contributes greatly to the success of your trip. As alpine conditions can be highly variable with sudden changes, it can get very cold in altitude, it is preferable to have numerous layers rather than one thick piece of clothing. It is not uncommon to have snow in the middle of summer, do not skimp on warm clothes even if the weather seems favourable. Contrarily, the sun can be scorching hot. Without weighing too much, you should always have sufficient equipment in your backpack to deal with the capricious and severe weather.   Back-pack - 20L / 25L backpack (for biking) - Provide enough space for the picnic. A word of advice in case of rain: even if you have an over-backpack, always protect your belongings in a plastic bag inside the backpack.

Clothing For added comfort regarding underwear, (t-shirts, boxers, socks), avoid cotton which is heavy, cold and dries very slowly. Opt for synthetic technical fabrics or wool, which is making a comeback. They are warmer and dry quickly.

For yourself : NB : ID card or valid passport + small change for personal expenses. - 1 travel bag or suitcase for the hotel - 1 mandatory mountain bike helmet (+ Knee protectors recommended) - 2 mountain bike drinks bottles or 1 camelbak - 1 knife + Flashlight or headlamp - 1 hat/headband + warm gloves - Cap, sunglasses, sunscreen - Spare items (T-shirt, underwear, socks), in synthetic fabric/wool - 1 Long-sleeved technical T-shirt/Cuffs - 1 fleece - 1 Gore-Tex jacket - 1 small down jacket (or 2nd fleece) - Short and long bib shorts (or leggings) - Short and long Mountain bike gloves (compulsory) - Clothes for the hotel - Sleeping bag liner (the most light and comfortable is the silk bag) - Toiletries including technical towel - Personal pharmacy : elastoplast, (stretchable strapping tape), band-aids "second skin" kit, compresses, medicines for common ailments : diarrhea, constipation, sore throat, headaches, pain relief, allergies and any prescribed medication. The mountain leader always carries a first aid kit with them. Remember that packing light is essential.

Mountain Bike equipment

- Electric battery key/battery lock system - Bike lock - 2 air chambers - Patch box + glue - 1 pump - Specific tools for your bike (depending on the eMTB brand, sometimes very specific tools)

Recommended : - Spare brake pads or pads - Front and rear derailleur cable - 1 spare derailleur clip (unless your derailleur is attached directly to the frame)

Arrival Day

Upon arrival to Chamonix you will be met by a LeRipp representative to greet you. You will have time to settle in and make sure you have everything for the first day of riding. In the evening, we will meet for a drink and go through the week's agenda.

The first day we normally start riding from Chamonix by gently pedalling along the valley towards Le Tour. From here we will ride a classic Swiss single track down to Chatelard, where we will be picked-up by the van and head up to the Emosson dam. From there it's a technical start before we reach the flowy trails down to Martigny. Finally we will head in the direction of Col Grand St Bernard but not before squeezing in one last descent.

The first trail starts right outside the hotel and takes us down towards Aosta in Italy. From here we will start the first big climb of the week to the Col at nearly 3,000m. From here, a high alpine single track awaits us all the way down to Courmayeur where we will stop for gelato and beer. Tonight we will be staying overnight in Aosta.

Today is the big traverse day. We will be leaving Italy and pedaling back to France,  via another high Col at nearly 3,000m high. The traverse contains a mix of riding and pushing our way to the top. From here we will be descending down to Bourg Saint Maurice and continue to Beaufort, where you will be staying the night. ‍ ‍

A quick warm up lap or two in Beaufort before shuttling up to Col Du Joly, where we will be riding down to Les Contamines. From here we will head off to ride some classic local Chamonix trails, ending the trip with some apres-bike drinks in the centre of town! Stay one final night in Chamonix. ‍

Departure Day

Wind up the trip, pack your bags and head back to the airport with big smiles on your face.

During the Tour du Mont Blanc we stay in a mix of hotels, guest houses or mountains huts. The exact accommodations vary depending on availability and the time of the year. There is also an option to upgrade your accommodation for most locations during the tour if you prefer to stay in slightly higher-end accommodation.

To get the the maximum out of your mountain biking experience we recommend being an advanced to expert mountain biker. However, we can still accommodate riders that are intermediate for this trip with some minor adjustments to the itinerary. For Advanced rider all trails are rideable and for intermediate there are a few places where you might prefer to push the bike down for a short bit. There are plenty of different options so depending on the level of your group we will adjust the itinerary accordingly.

Skill Level Recommended:

Roots, rocks, drops and tight switchbacks are no match for you even in steep and exposed terrain. You feel confident in riding longer trails with sustained technical features as well as handling some exposed sections with no-fall zones.

Fitness Level Recommended:

The striving prospect.

You can pedal uphill 1 hour per day and climb 300m during consecutive days riding. You don't mind steep uphill climbs for about 10 to 15 minutes at the time. Downhill you happily ride up to 3000 verticals per day. You exercise on average 2 times per week.

Explore three different countries (France, Switzerland & Italy) while riding around the Mont Blanc. Price: From € 1,890 Duration: 5 Nights

In the evening there will be a welcome dinner where you will meet your guide who will briefly explain the itinerary for the week.

Hearty breakfast in the morning followed by a brief meeting to explain the day's agenda. Typically, the first day we start with some riding in Le Tour or Les Houches to warm up and make sure that you are one with the bike. After a full day of riding, laughing and sweating, we will head back to the chalet for some afternoon snacks and relaxing time.

Day 2 & 3

Two full days of epic mountain biking where we will explore the best trails Chamonix has to offer. One of the days will be spent in one of the neighboring valleys, in Italy, where we will enjoy areas such as Pila and La Thuile in Aosta valley. We tend to shift around the itinerary based on the weather, lift status, as well as the conditions of the trails in order to create the best possible experience for you.

No plans day. Normally we recommend that you take this day to rest your body and explore one of the other awesome activities around Chamonix. If you have not yet visited Aiguille Di Midi, it is a must do while in Chamonix. If you can't stay off your bike, you can of course go riding by yourself and we are more than happy to point you in the right direction.

Day 5 & 6

Another two full days of awesome mountain biking. This time we will explore some of the more unknown areas around Finnhaut and Martigny in Switzerland and perhaps try one of the more famous enduro trails from Les Saisies to Albertville. Again, the guides will decide on where to go based on lift status or road access in order to create the best possible experience.

Departure Day

During your stay in Chamonix you will either be staying at Whymper Chalet Hotel in the middle of town or at one of our preferred Hotels. The Whymper Chalet is a like a "home away from home" but run as a hotel. It has a total of 10 bedrooms, all with a private bathroom. You will also find a cosy living room / lounge area where you can all hang out and enjoy a beverage together. The living room is centred around a wood burning stove, a large dining room, a bar area, a small office area and a terrace with an outdoor lounge. There is also a sauna where you can relax and enjoy a cold beer after a day of riding.

The riding in Chamonix is often characterised by steepness, roots and fairly demanding single tracks. During the Chamonix E-BIKE trip, there is a lot of variation to the trails we ride. Some offers steep root and rock sections, others long flowy trails in the woods. We often combine technical sections together with easier more flowy trails in order to create the best possible variation of trails. We normally use the help of a van or lifts to reach the start to our trails but sometimes we do have to pedal or hike & bike for a little bit in order to reach the best trails in the area. ‍ Therefore, to get the full “Chamonix E-Biking Experience” we recommend being an advanced mountain biker and average fit. However.... with access to both Italy and Switzerland there are trails available for all kind of levels, so do not hesitate to reach out should you not be an advanced rider.

Stay in one of our preferred hotels and enjoy the best trails in the Chamonix Valley. Price: From € 1,650 Duration: 7 Nights

Apparently a picture says more than a 1,000 words so why don't sit back and enjoy our favourite photos from our Chamonix ebike tours.

Tour Du Mont Blanc, Bikepacking Route

The Wild Side

The mountains before the 18th century were considered arcane places, full of dangers, inhabited by monstrous creatures, where huge white dragons (i.e. glaciers) descended from the heights to haul away and devour those who wished to violate their territory. The conquest of Mont Blanc in 1786 marks the beginning of a different approach to the mountains, still an unknown place yet to be explored — the birth of Alpinism.

A different approach is also necessary when bikepacking the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB), one of the most popular long-distance circular treks in Europe. The urge to pedal must meld with the attitude of the mountains and to all that it involves. The Tour du Mont Blanc is an alpine voyage that fills the heart and empties the lungs. Trail Notes

  • Amazing views on Val Veny and Val Ferret, two beautiful glacial valleys that run along the entire italian side of the Mont Blanc Massif.
  • The monuments of the conquest of Mont Blanc (1786) in the Chamonix square. The first of 1887 is dedicated to Balmat De Saussure and the second was opened 100 years later to return M.G.Paccard about who was the real soul of the undertaking.
  • The bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) it’s one of the biggest vulture which nesting in the old continent. It’s possible to spot this rare bird of prey, recently reintroduced on the Alps, in the most mountainous areas of the route.
  • The Marmot (Marmota) a sort of large squirrel, will accompany you along most of the route with its typical whistle. It’s a warning signal used to communicate your presence to the others marmots. It’s indeed the cutest animal of the TMB.
  • Weird wooden sculptures along the trail in the wood after Champex-Lac, in Switzerland.
  • This route of TMB deviates from the classic route and requires good physical preparation. However, there are several paths to reduce the total ascent and bypass some of the toughest climbs.
  • The best time to face the TMB is from mid-June until mid-September. In June the higher mountain passes may still be snow-covered. During July and August the trails are crowded with hikers, while in later September you can experience the TMB in amore intimate way.
  • The TMB can be ridden clockwise or counterclockwise. Many people choose to start from Chamonix or Les Houches in France, others from Courmayeur in Italy, but you can choose any point along the route.
  • Take high mountain clothes with you. Abrupt changes in weather can lead to sudden snowfalls even in the summer months.
  • Don’t’ forget to wear sunscreen.
  • The long, steep descents and the weight of the bike in bikepacking mode devour the brake pads. Take with you at least one spare pair.
  • In the towns of Chamonix and Les Houches , there are some well-stocked bike shops.
  • Wild camping is not generally encouraged , but is tolerated. Set up camp in responsible places. Be discreet.  #leavenotrace
  • For those who don’t want to have a self-supported adventure there are many shelters along the route where you can sleep and eat. In the summer months, given the turnout, it’s recommended to book, while from mid-September many of them are already closed.
  • The massif of Mont Blanc with its glaciers and permanent snow ensures a steady supply of water along the route. (Rivers and creeks in the mountain/ fountains in the villages).
  • You can resupply at the general stores in Courmayeur (Italy), Les Houches and Chamonix (France) and in the small village of Le Fouly (Switzerland).

Trail Description

The TMB starts in a clockwise direction from Courmayeur, a small italian town located at the foot of the southern side of Mont Blanc. It quickly reaches 2,000 meters in altitude and the majestic scenery offered by the Aiguille Noire de Peuterey and the mighty glacier of Brenva that flows down valley from the summit of Mont Blanc. By way of a hike-a-bike trail you reach the Mont Favre at 2400mt before falling back to the most spectacular area of the Val Veny, where Dora of Vény river, the incredible Miage glacier, lake Combal, Aiguille des Glaciers and the unmistakable silhouettes of Calcaires Pyramides on the horizon paint an ice-age setting of incomparable beauty.

A comfortable gravel road runs through the valley and after passing some dilapidated military barracks, reaches the high Val Veny, a vast isolated plateau that allows you to catch your breath before start to climb again along a trail that leads to the Col de la Seigne (2512mt) on the border between Italy and France. Arriving here just before sunset means you will enjoy the most beautiful descent of the whole Tour immersed in a surreal atmosphere: the sweet flowing singletrack, the Vallée des Glaciers and peaks on the horizon, all is dyed of gold. After losing about 1000 mt in altitude and passed the small village of Les Chapieux, it rises again to face one of the toughest stretches of the TMB, the climb to the Col du Bonhomme (2,483mt) where the narrow, steep and often rough track will make you curse every the added grams loaded on your bike. However, the Alpine environment and the scenic views offered by the surrounding valleys will reward the effort.

The singletrack descent, initially tight and technical, becomes smoother and comfortable as you get closer to the valley where a gravel road leading into the town of Les Contamines. From here you’ll climb a steep fire road to reach Col de Voza, then cross the tracks of the Tramway du Mont Blanc to go down to the village of Les Houches, along an old school crumbly downhill track. The route continues on singletrack through the forest, running along the north side of the Arve valley, where through the branches of the pine trees, you see the majestic Glacier du Bossom and overhanging peaks of the Aiguille du Midi and the Aiguille du Dru.

After the traditional alpine village of Chamonix, you will reach the town of Le Tour where a jeep road reaches the Col de Balme at 2195mt on the border of France and Switzerland. From here a long, scenic singletrack runs the west side of the Croix de Fer and then enters the forest, where it becomes rocky and very technical. From the valley of Trient you’ll climb to the amphitheater of the namesake glacier to overcome the glacial river through a wooden bridge and reach the pass of the Col de la Forclaz. A steep narrow path climbs to the Alp Bovine becoming increasingly challenging in the final stretch where boulders along the trail force you to lift the front wheel.

The route continues between alpine pasture and forest to reach the valley bottom through a steep descent on loose rock that winds between boulders and ancient trees uprooted by winter avalanches. Back in the valley you’ll climb the swiss side of Val Ferret, cross the village of Le Fouly and with a succession of trails and fire roads you reach the Col du Grand Ferret at 2,537 mt altitude, on the Swiss-Italian border. From here the view of the Italian Val Ferret is breathtaking. The return to Chamonix is done by traversing the mountain side, a panoramic balcony on the northeastern side of the Mont Blanc massif: from Mont Dolent to the Aiguille de Triolet, from the Grandes Jorasses to the Giant’s Tooth, until the 4810mt summit of Mont Blanc.

The magical Tour du Mont-Blanc by bike

Three days, three countries, more than 320 km (200 mi) and more than 9,000 metres (30,000 ft) of elevation gain: discover the legend of the Tour du Mont Blanc by bike. Climb several of the Tour de France's legendary passes and follow in the footsteps of iconic riders through impressive descents in the French, Swiss and Italian Alps. This road bike adventure is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful in the Alps. It is a must for cycling enthusiasts who want to go even further into France, Switzerland and Italy. The route follows historic roads, wild landscapes and legendary high passes. You'll be riding on the same roads as your cycling heroes and thousands of travellers over the centuries. The Tour du Mont Blanc is a magnificent loop. I have chosen to start from Chamonix in France and ride clockwise, always under the watchful eye of the Mont Blanc massif. This three-stage Collection allows you to enjoy the adventure and have a great time. Bike lovers rejoice! Note that not all stages are equal. You will certainly want to discover towns such as Aosta in Italy and Bourg-Saint-Maurice in France. You will ride 124 km (77 mi) on the first day, 77 km (49 mi) on the second day and 120 km (75 mi) on the last day. You start in Chamonix. A historic mountain town, Chamonix boasts the highest peak in Western Europe, Mont Blanc, at over 4,800 metres (15,750 ft). Its white cap is almost always visible from your bike during the three days. For centuries, mountaineers, climbers, skiers and extreme athletes have flocked to this legendary city to try their luck: to reach the extraordinary, even legendary, summit. A childhood dream for many. Plan to spend at least half a day discovering and enjoying these wide open spaces, between snowy peaks and bucolic landscapes. Easily accessible by plane, road or train and with many accommodation options, Chamonix is only an hour's drive from Geneva International Airport (Switzerland). There are several transfer services or a regular bus service from the airport to the town centre. For those arriving by road or train, there is plenty of long-term parking and the train station is right in the centre of town. For buses and trains, don't forget to book your bike seat in advance. Highlights include the Great St Bernard Pass, with its 32 km (20 mi) climb to 2,469 metres (8,100 ft), which crosses the border between Switzerland and Italy. The Petit-Saint-Bernard Pass is an ancient road that has linked Lyon in France, and Rome in Italy, for at least 1,000 years. Finally, the Col des Saisies has often been included in the stages of the Tour de France; imagine yourself in the middle of a peloton of professional cyclists climbing and descending this magnificent route!

Stage 1: Chamonix to Aosta – Tour du Mont Blanc by bike

The first day of this Tour du Mont Blanc by bike is the longest with 124 km and around 3,500 meters of elevation gain. You will start in France, pass through Switzerland and end in Aosta in Italy.

Stage 2: Aosta to Bourg St Maurice – Tour du Mont Blanc by bike

The second day of this Tour du Mont Blanc by bike is the shortest and the most "easy". You start from Aosta in Italy and finish in Bourg-Saint-Maurice in France, 77 km and less than 2000 meters of elevation gain. A deserved day of rest. Warm up your tired legs to better attack the third day.

Mountain bike in the alps: the tour of mont blanc by mountain bike.

Mountain biking in Chamonix Valley

The Tour of Mont Blanc (TMB) is the circumnavigation of the Mont Blanc massif. It's an absolutely spectacular ride passing glaciers, crossing high mountain passes and traversing the frontiers of France, Switzerland and Italy.

Originally a walker's route, it is becoming a popular tour for mountain bikers. There are a lot of tracks in each valley and many variations possible; half on road - half on track - fully on road - fully on track. The classic Walker's route has a lot of unrideable parts and does involve a lot of carrying (especially the Col du Bonhomme and La Bovine sections).

Take care on some of the mountain tracks on steep slopes. A fall here may have serious consequences.

Accommodation : You can choose to stay in refuges, hotels or camp depending on which route you take.

Equipment : Maps (French IGN Top 25 3630OT & French IGN Top 25 3531ET), a bike repair kit and warm clothing. This is alpine riding and the weather can deteriorate very quickly.

An Itinerary Example: Starting from Chamonix

Variants of this classic tour have been developed which involve as little as 1 hour pushing in the 4 day trip. This route avoids as many of the unrideable parts as possible. It is still a very tough tour, and vehicle support is recommended. The total elevation gain is about 8000 metres including use of a cable car on the first day and a train on the last.

Day 1 : Take the Balcon Sud in the direction of Les Houches then cross town to the Bellevue lift station. Take the lift to the top and then come down the Col de Voza; from there descend into the Bionnassay valley and zig-zag the hairpins down into the Contamines valley. Once there, continue south towards the Col du Bonhomme.

This track is not rideable at the summit and the descent is highly technical; so take the walking path on the left hand side or go right down in to the valley until you get to the road that goes to the Rosental lake. At the Rosental lake go by road in the direction of Chapieux. This road will take you to a really steep pass (La Culaz) which, by this point at the end of the day, will take a fair effort. Spend the night in the Nova hut or camp out.

Day 2 : Set off again from the Nova hut heading east in the direction of the valley of the Col de la Seigne (2516m). This track is pretty harsh and ends up not cyclable for 200 or 300 metres from the summit of the pass. You'll get an extraordinary view from the top.

From the Col de la Seigne come down the footpath; it's difficult but do-able and finally ends up as a forest track that flanks the side of the Val Veni. You'll pass the huge Miage and Brenva glaciers. The track ends at Courmayeur. Take the road that goes up to Val Ferret. The road becomes a 4x4 track and snakes up to the Elena hut at 2062m.

Day 3 : Behind the Elena refuge there is a hiking trail that leads to the Grand Col Ferret ( 2537 m). This section is not bike-able. You must walk your bike about 90m. From the top of the pass, the trail heads down a very steep and challenging slope towards Switzerland.

This becomes a forested track near the village of Ferret. From there, take the route that leads to Martigny. About 30km downhill! Stop in the village of Champex.

Day 4 : From Champex continue on the Mont Blanc track towards the Col de la Forclaz. After the pass it's possible to get to "Les Jeurs" by road. For this itinerary, that leads to the border, take the only possible road on the left.

In "les Jeurs" the road becomes a 4x4 track that is easily rideable to the Col des Posettes - this marks your return to the Chamonix valley. From the top of the pass go down the forestry track to the village of Le Tour and return to Chamonix either by the Balcon Nord or by road.

E-Tour du Mont Blanc

The E-Bike World Tour offers all riders who accept the challenge of multi-day e-bike races. Whether it's high alpine scenery or lush forests, riders can look forward to riding different terrains from stage to stage. And to spice things up a bit, there’s a bit of hike-a-bike here and there.

In 2022 we visited Flachau - Austria, Tignes & Val d’Isère high up in the French Alps and returned to Verbier for the E-Tour du Mont-Blanc. Each race was split into long-timed stages over 2-3 days with tech zones where battery exchanges are available. This creates a unique format in e- mountain biking. A 3-day race will likely cover around 200km of single trails, in a mix of lush forests and high alpine scenery.

In 2023, only one race will be held in Verbier: the E-Tour du Mont-Blanc .

Everything You Need To Know About Hiking The Tour du Mont Blanc

A s an avid hiker, you’ve probably heard of the Tour du Mont Blanc or TMB hiking trail. You might even have plans to conquer this popular hiking destination one day. If so, here’s everything you need to know before you go.

In 1760, a Swiss Geologist and physicist, Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, then living in Geneva, discovered the TMB hiking trail. Saussure wanted to explore the Mont du Blanc Mountains to examine and document plant specimens. Also called the Mont Blanc massif, the mountain range is 60 miles by 20 miles long, with 11 summits over 4,000 meters high. Though he discovered it in 1760, Saussure first walked around the entire TMB hiking path in 1767.

Unfortunately, the Swiss scientist failed to climb one of its peaks on that initial journey around the path. The first to achieve this feat were Michel Paccard and Jacques Balmat. The two found a path to the apex in 1786 through the Grands Mulets route. Sausurre became the third person to reach the summit shortly thereafter.

Trail Overview

Though Pacard and Balmat first reached the peak of the Mont Blanc massif via the Grands Mulets route, the Gouter route is today’s standard path. This trail is 105 miles long and passes through 3 countries: France, Italy, and Switzerland . The Gouter Route (also known as the Voie Des Cristalliers and Voie Royale) is one of the two most commonly utilized routes to reach the summit of Mont Blanc in the Alps. Though the Gouter route reaches an elevation of 15,774 ft, it is considered the most straightforward ascent. The route lies on the north side of the mountain, in France, seeing thousands of mountaineers annually.

The Tour du Mont Blanc difficulty level is somewhat subjective to the hiker. The Gouter route is relatively easy because it takes about two days to reach the ascent and does not require extensive technical skills. Nonetheless, it is physically demanding and mentally challenging if you lack athletic ability. The most difficult aspect of this route includes a narrow passageway of unstable rocks on the mountain’s edge. Seventy-four have died, and 180 were injured in accidents along this dangerous segment between 1990 and 2011.

Once passing this tricky part, the Gouter route is smooth sailing. It steadily increases in steepness while crossing exposed terrain. Hazardous weather conditions are the most dangerous aspects that remain. Cold and wet conditions can cause hypothermia and frostbite. Therefore, visiting the Tour du Mont Blanc for Summer hiking, Mid-June to mid-September, is safest. During the summer, temperatures will range from 40 degrees at night to 80 degrees during the day. Some days require shorts beneath a warm, sunny sky ; others might entail brisk, wet conditions.

Permits And Regulations

No permits are required for the TMB and there are no regulatory restrictions. However, some believe a technical skills test could reduce deaths and injuries along the path. Additionally, residents are disturbed by the amount of trash that hikers inevitably abandon to lighten their loads on the ascent. What’s interesting about the Tour du Mont Blanc is that there are many comforts along the path in the form of hotels and huts. Several companies offer self-guided packages that include accommodations, detailed hiking guides, and set itineraries.

Trail Highlights And Points Of Interest

The Tour du Mont Blanc hike is considered one of the world’s top ten “bucket list” hiking trails. In addition to the soothing sounds of waterfalls , there are glaciers, streams, high alpine meadows, and the natural beauty of the Mont Blanc landscape. Among the most beautiful and visible flora are the rare Slipper Orchid, the Martagon Lily, Aquilegia Alpha, the famous Edelweiss, and rare Campanula thyrsoides. Though heavily impacted by human presence, the animals that remain in the wilderness of the Mont Blanc massif include Marmots, Ravens, Goats, Mountain Hares, Vultures, and Eagles, among others.

Safety Considerations

On the Tour du Mont Blanc hiking trail, the most important considerations will be comfortable shoes and a good quality backpack with appropriate dimensions and weight.  What qualifies as an appropriately sized bag will depend on whether you stick to hiking the trail or detour slightly to local huts and hotels. The former will require a 60L bag, and the latter will require a 30L bag. Remember to break in your footwear a few months in advance and buy shoes larger than usual to accommodate swollen, achy feet. Trekking poles will help lessen aches and pains experienced in the knee and leg muscles. Hiking crampons are a “better safe than sorry” item to add to your Tour du Mont Blanc packing list. They will help maintain balance and avoid slipping across waterways and snow patches, which might even save a life!

In case of an emergency, administer first aid, note location and grid reference on a map, call for help (cell phone service is generally available along the TMB). If no phone is available, blow a whistle or flash a flashlight six times. If there is an injured person, carefully consider whether to go for help or stay with the injured. If the injured party stays behind, leave them with food, water, and warm clothes.

Planning and Preparation

Being physically prepared for the TMB hike is a necessary safety precaution. Training should start at least three months in advance and should be in layered clothing, hiking boots, and a fully packed backpack to best simulate trail conditions. Other things that require planning include booking accommodations along the trail and deciding how many days to stay. An itinerary will vary depending on whether two days, two weeks, or even two months are set aside to experience the beauty of TMB.

Most hikers can ascend the Tour du Mont Blanc self-guided if interested. The trail is easy to follow, with well-maintained paths, directional markings, and clearly understood signs. However, map reading skills are essential, and hikers should also carry a guidebook.
