In December, the group’s first U.S. shows — two in Los Angeles and two in New York — quickly sold out, packing venues like L.A.’s Moroccan Lounge with a steady flow of 20-something, mostly female, fans marching to the beat of the band’s double kick drum percussion. Lovejoy’s visit would reveal the band’s status as unlikely heartthrobs and showcase their clever banter and mischievous wit.

Along with the tour announcement, Lovejoy has released a video for the band’s hard-charging new single “Call Me What You Like.” Soot has a penchant for casting himself as a hopeless romantic — a “Jim Halpert” from The Office type, replete with entangled numbness and inescapable inadequacy — and yet he refuses to melt into a floor puddle with a kitschy breakup song. As it turns out, “Call Me What You Like” is a surprising and satisfying middle finger to the notion of having it all as it mucks around in the middle phases of an early relationship close to collapse.

“And so I find’s myself in your mum’s bedroom,” Soot sings on the new single. “Fighting with the pink roller blinds. It’s on pay-per-view. Just place your bests on who’s lost their mind.” When asked what the line meant during a brief interview with bandmates Joe Goldsmith, Ash Kabosu and Mark Boardman, Soot laughed and offered up, “I’m not necessarily sure, in that song I just find myself thinking a lot about her mom’s bathroom and going through the drawers.”

Tour de Houston bicyclists urge for long-term measures to improve rider safety on city's roads

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Thousands of bicyclists took off from downtown Houston Sunday morning for the 17th annual Tour de Houston , a ride that travels through some of the city's most scenic areas.

Participants were in good spirits as they were greeted with beautiful weather at the starting line on Avenida de las Americas, right next to Discovery Green. Mayor John Whitmire joined Apache Corporation, the event's sponsor, to send off each of the three groups, riding in the 20, 40, and 60-mile routes.

The ride almost didn't take place this year.

Back in January, the Mayor's Office of Special Events preliminarily canceled the 2024 event due to a lack of funding. Whitmire said this was done without his consultation and when he found out, he explored other options to keep the event going.

The longest route takes participants through Houston's historic neighborhoods, vibrant districts, and parks before going all the way down to Clear Lake Park in Seabrook. The intersections along the way were not closed, but manned by traffic officers.

While the event allowed bicyclists to ride safely on Houston's roads on Sunday, some riders shared with ABC13 some of the long-term measures they'd like to see to make the city more bike-friendly.

"If they could connect the bike trails together to make even long trails, that would be the best thing the City of Houston could do to improve biking in the city, in my opinion. Connect the widest trails, like White Oak and Spring Creek. Those kinds of mega trails," Ulises Martin said.

"A clearly marked lane for bikes. We do know that we have to share with cars because the City of Houston is so car-oriented. Make a better effort of campaigning to let motorists know to be aware of cyclists," Phi Nguyen said.

Data obtained by ABC13 shows 13 cyclists died in accidents in Harris County in 2023. ABC13 asked the mayor where city officials stand on the issue of bicyclist safety.

"We're growing at a rapid rate. Our general mobility is very important. We've done great things along Allen Parkway. We need to make sure that there's a safe passage in Memorial Park. So there's a lot of things we still have to do," Whitmire said.

Meanwhile, organizers said proceeds from Tour de Houston will go towards the city's RE-Plant Houston Program, which helps plant thousands of trees and reforest parks and greenspaces.

Vicki Ray can count the number of Denver Nuggets games she’s missed since she first sat in the nosebleeds at McNichols Sports Arena 32 years ago.

There were two games in 2005 when her mother died and the four in 2022 after Ray had a stroke. One when she was snowed in at her Lone Tree home and all the games closed to fans during the coronavirus pandemic.

And then there are the 14 games she’s missed since Kroenke Sports & Entertainment officials revoked her floor-level season tickets over claims she violated NBA and arena rules for contact with players and referees.

Ray, 72, said the altercations didn’t happen and theorized the company revoked her tickets for other reasons.

“My first reaction was somebody wants my seats, because I’ve had those seats the whole time the arena has been open,” Ray said in an interview with the Denver Post this week.

In a statement, Kroenke officials said the tickets were revoked “due to repeated violations and warnings of the NBA’s Code of Conduct as well as Ball Arena’s Code of Conduct.”

The company’s statement cited “unwanted contact with participants” that continued “even after repeated warnings.”

“We are saddened to take this action but have done so in accordance with league and venue guidelines,” Kroenke officials said in a statement.

Kroenke officials declined to answer further questions about revoking Ray’s tickets. The National Basketball Referees Association and National Basketball Players Association did not respond to requests for comment.

The first time Ray heard of any problems was Feb. 2, when two security guards approached her after the game and said she had grabbed a referee, who pushed her away and said “No.”

On Feb. 4, arena officials told her a player reported she hit him in the face. Ray said she only ever holds her hand out for players as they’re coming and leaving the arena, and it’s their choice to give her a high-five.

The phone call revoking her season tickets came on Feb. 13, two days after she had put a deposit down for the next season.

It was a shock to Ray, who feels as close as family to the Nuggets team.

Her sitting room is lined with shelves of Nuggets memorabilia – dozens of signed Nikes, countless pictures of her posing with players and celebrities at games, get-well posters sent by the team after she had her stroke and a teddy bear and birthday card sent by Marcus Camby.

Ray said she’s considering legal action but declined to provide the name of her attorney. She’ll be able to apply for season ticket membership again next year, but that’s no guarantee she’ll get in, she said.

“I just want my seats,” she said. “I want to be there.”
