How to Pick the Best Abu Dhabi Tour from Dubai (+Our Experience)

Thinking of visiting Abu Dhabi from Dubai for a day and wondering which tour to choose? We had the exact same question on our recent trip – what is the best Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai?

After several hours of research, comparing dozens of itineraries, and reading hundreds of reviews, I can tell you that the choice is overwhelming. There are hundreds of Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai, with widely varying itineraries. You have to read in detail which places you actually visit and which are not more than a quick photo stop. Furthermore, often they also list the sights which you only pass by…

You’ll find private tours and (small) group tours, full-day tours, or those that only take a couple of hours… There is one thing in common – pretty much all Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. But the rest of the itinerary can vary from short stops at some local low-key markets to thorough visits to some of the most impressive landmarks…

In this article, we share our hand-picked selection of Abu Dhabi tours that we shortlisted for our own trip , as well as a detailed description of the tour we ultimately chose. I hope that this guide will save you time and help you choose the best tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and have a truly unforgettable experience.

TIP: If you don’t want to read the entire article and simply want to see the best of Abu Dhabi on a day trip from Dubai, we recommend this highly-rated tour . It’s the tour that we chose and it was perfect. It brings you to the three main landmarks in Abu Dhabi – Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Etihad Towers, and Qasr Al Watan – and you actually get to visit each of these places and not just pass by or see from a distance, as with many other tours.

Why Visit & What to See on Abu Dhabi Day Trip

Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. It’s also the richest of the seven Emirates, home to some of the most prestigious projects and remarkable architectural landmarks. So no trip to the UAE would be complete without at least a short introduction to this beautiful city!

Just like Dubai, Abu Dhabi is a quickly growing city with many new attractions, one more impressive than the other. So you have to understand that there is no way to see all the best places in Abu Dhabi on a day trip from Dubai. There are simply too many options and you would need several days in Abu Dhabi if you want to see all the top sights.

So when looking for a day tour to Abu Dhabi from Dubai, you have to decide which of the top sights and attractions you absolutely do not want to miss. Once you make the choice, it becomes easier to pick the right tour that fits your interests.

Here are some of the TOP attractions in Abu Dhabi:

  • Sheikh Zayed Mosque – the most famous landmark in Abu Dhabi, included in pretty much all Abu Dhabi tours.
  • Qasr Al Watan – UAE Presidential Palace (sometimes also referred to as the Royal Palace) – an actual visit inside is only included with very few tours.
  • Etihad Towers . Many tours pass here, but only a few include a visit to the Observation Deck.
  • Louvre Abu Dhabi – the largest museum in the Gulf region, among others, displaying artworks from The Louvre and other top museums in Paris . There are just a few tours that visit here.
  • Yas Island where you can find the following theme parks: Ferrari World , Yas Waterworld , Warner Bros. World , and SeaWorld . This is not the best place to visit on a day trip since you could easily spend a day at each of these theme parks and still not see it all. So if tours from Dubai include Yas Island in their itinerary, at best, it’s a half-day visit to Ferrari World (most tours that mention Ferrari World, usually only stop for a picture at the parking in front of it).

Here are some additional sights sometimes included in some Abu Dhabi tours:

  • Abu Dhabi Corniche – a waterfront road with bike paths and a nice pedestrian promenade. Most tours just pass by here.
  • Founders Memorial – a monument. Most tours just pass by here.
  • Emirates Palace – this luxury hotel (full name – Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental ) is one of the most expensive hotels ever built. Some tours include a visit, but most just drive by.

Good to know: The best Abu Dhabi day tours include a visit to 2-3 of the ‘TOP attractions’. Depending on the tour and how much time you spend at the main landmarks, they sometimes include one or two short stops at some of the ‘additional sights’ listed above.

However, some tours only seem to offer great value at first sight. When you look deeper, you realize that the majority of your time will be spent in the car or with short stops at ‘cultural’ attractions, such as a vegetable and dates market, Abu Dhabi Heritage Village, or local art galleries. While this could be a nice addition to the main sights, there are so many better things to do with just a day in Abu Dhabi than spend your precious time shopping… So choose your tour wisely!

Below, you can find our hand-picked selection of the best Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai.

Best Abu Dhabi Tours from Dubai

As I said, there are so many Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai that the choice can look daunting. Based on the research I did for our recent trip, I made a selection of just a few VERY BEST options. This was my personal shortlist.

Here are some of the best-rated Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai , with a short overview of just the main landmarks that you actually visit:

  • Premium Full-Day Sightseeing Tour (+-9-10 hrs). Includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Etihad Towers, and Qasr Al Watan. This is the tour we chose and can highly recommend if you want to see the most important landmarks of Abu Dhabi in a day. You can also book this same tour including lunch at a traditional restaurant (we had lunch there too and it was excellent).
  • Full Day Tour with Ferrari World (+-10 hrs). This tour includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Ferrari World, as well as a stop at Heritage Village. If you want to see the Mosque and ride some of the fastest rollercoasters in the world, this is by far the best tour. Most others only include a photo stop at Ferrari World.
  • Full Day Trip with Mosque & Louvre (+- 9hrs). Includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi.
  • Half Day Tour (+- 5hrs). This popular tour only visits the famous Sheikh Zayed Mosque. It’s a good option if you are really short on time.

Good to know: Most of the tours listed here are small-group tours, but they are also available as private tours . You can choose from different options once you select the number of people and travel dates.

Further below, you can read a short review of the tour that we chose and see some more pictures of the places that we visited on this Abu Dhabi day trip.

Review of Our Abu Dhabi Sightseeing Tour from Dubai

As already mentioned, we chose this highly-rated guided tour for our Dubai to Abu Dhabi day trip.

Just to be clear – we do not organize these tours or have anything to do with the company that runs them. Like you, we are just travelers who do their own research, pay for the experiences we like to have, and hope that we made the right choice.

This Abu Dhabi tour was not cheap, but it brings you to the most impressive places in Abu Dhabi. We felt that it offers really good value. If you want to see the most important landmarks of Abu Dhabi in just a day, then you really cannot go wrong with this tour.

Here is what our Abu Dhabi tour looked like:

Pick up in Dubai & Drive to Abu Dhabi

We booked the tour starting at 8:45 AM. The evening before the tour, I received a WhatsApp message from the tour company informing us that they would pick us up at 8:15 AM.

The driver was on time and we stopped to pick up two other people along the way. He then brought us all to yet another hotel where we transferred to a small bus (our group had 18 people).

Good to know: The drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi normally takes about 1.5 hours, but it can also take much longer due to busy traffic. The same on the way back.

PRO TIP: When booking a full-day tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, don’t make any other plans for that day – that way, you don’t have to worry about busy traffic or potential delays. If you are planning a half-day trip , I would also foresee some buffer time, or opt for an afternoon tour (or a ‘sunset’ tour, as they call it) – that way, you can still do something else in Dubai in the morning.

Abu Dhabi Corniche

Drive through Abu Dhabi

On the way to Abu Dhabi, our guide informed us that we would start our tour with Qasr Al Watan Royal Palace and visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at the end of the day. This is because there was a big cruise ship in town and since pretty much all visitors go to the Mosque, it’s extremely crowded in the morning.

This was a good decision, indeed. By the time we got to the Mosque, it was just pleasantly lively. I can’t imagine what it must look like in the mornings when several gigantic cruise ships are visiting.

On the way to the President’s Palace, we passed Yas Island and could see the famous Ferrari World and other attractions in the distance. We also saw Saadiyat Island with the Abu Dhabi Louvre – also from quite far away. Once in the city center, we drove past the Corniche – Dubai waterfront – and saw the Founders Memorial as well as the Emirati Palace.

You only get to see all these places from the bus, but it gives you an idea of what Abu Dhabi is like.

Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Abu Dhabi

Qasr Al Watan

Abu Dhabi’s Presidential Palace sits in a huge opulent complex by the sea overlooking the city in the distance. The main highlight here is Qasr Al Watan .

This magnificent palace might remind you of the famous Taj Mahal in India, but this one was built just recently – between 2010 – 2017. Its architecture and grandeur will take your breath away!

The palace was built using some of the finest materials including Italian marble, gold, Swarovski crystals, and gigantic handmade carpets. It is absolutely magnificent and I would even say that it’s one of the most beautiful buildings on the planet.

Quite frankly, I don’t understand why it’s not as popular as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. These two places are just as impressive and both are absolutely not to be missed in Abu Dhabi!

Qasr Al Watan - one of the main landmarks in Abu Dhabi UAE

Our tour guide gave us a short introduction to the Palace and explained where to find the ‘must sees’. After that, we had about more than an hour to explore the palace and its grounds on our own.

This is something I really liked about this tour – we got just plenty of information, but also plenty of free time at each of the landmarks visited.

Good to know: While it is a working palace, it’s mostly used for ceremonial functions and big political gatherings. So the palace is open to the public, except if there is some special political event or a visit by another head of state.

You will have to go through airport-style security here, but you can simply leave all your belongings on the tour bus and just take your camera with you.

Qasr Al Watan Royal Palace of UAE - Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai

Etihad Towers

The next stop on our itinerary was the Observation Deck at the Etihad Towers . There are five skyscrapers here, of varying height. We were told that the five towers represent unity, like the five fingers of a hand. I also read somewhere that they refer to several important Arabic symbols, such as falconry and swords.

In addition to their unique architecture and symbolism, Etihad Towers offer stunning 360° views of the city and the Arabian Gulf from the Observation Deck at 300 meters . It’s located on the 74th floor of Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers Hotel .

The views from here are spectacular and – in my opinion – more impressive than from most of the viewpoints in Dubai, including the views from Burj Khalifa.

Right below, you can see the entire Presidential Palace complex as well as the Emirates Palace and several other luxury hotels, including Rixos Marina Abu Dhabi which looks like a copy of the famous Atlantis The Palm in Dubai . The seashore and Corniche make the views even more special.

Good to know: Etihad Towers Observation Deck is supposedly just a short stop of about half an hour, out of which you have about 15 minutes to enjoy the views at the top (which sounds little but is actually plenty). However, depending on the queue at the elevators, it might take longer.

View from Etihad Towers Observation Deck - Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai

After the visit to Etihad Towers, we drove to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. There is an underground mall here – Souq Al Jami – where you can find a big food court with a wide variety of restaurants.

Before we headed for lunch, our guide quickly checked if everyone was dressed ‘acceptably’ for the Mosque visit and went to get some Abaya (long black dress) and scarves for women.

If you wear long pants/skirt, a blouse that covers your arms completely, and have a scarf to cover your hair, you don’t need this dress. But if your clothes are just not long enough or see-through (even a bit), they recommend wearing the Abaya. So I opted for that, just to be safe.

If you choose the tour that includes lunch , you will have a traditional lunch at the Michelin-star Al Khayma Heritage Restaurant. Otherwise, you can decide where you want to eat when you get there. You will find all the famous fast-food chains here as well as Italian and Mexican restaurants, etc. However, it’s your chance to try some really good Arabian food so we recommend that you go to Al Khayma.

We had lunch at this restaurant, following our guide’s recommendation and everything was delicious.

I read in some reviews that people felt lunch was a bit rushed, but we had about 1h15 which was plenty. I even found the time to quietly put on the Abaya before meeting the guide at the agreed time and place.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Sheikh Zayed Mosque is the most famous landmark in Abu Dhabi and a must-see! It’s the finest example of Islamic architecture and is absolutely breathtaking, both outside as well as inside.

As a non-Muslim, you can only visit part of the Mosque, but no worries – you can see the most impressive parts. You are also allowed to view the main worship hall which is nothing short of remarkable.

Here, you can see the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet, ornate decorations, and several impressive Swarovski chandeliers. It’s also incredibly spacious and can accommodate about 40,000 people inside!

If you are a Muslim, you can also go to pray inside, but during the week, the main hall seemed to be empty. The main prayer hall is closed to visitors between noon and 3 pm on Fridays, so tours try to visit before or after that.

Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai - Sheikh Zayed Mosque

As mentioned earlier, the Grand Mosque is one place that is included in all tour itineraries and is visited by pretty much every tourist who sets foot in Abu Dhabi, even if just for a few hours. This means that the Mosque is always extremely busy. Tickets have to be reserved in advance, for a specific time slot, etc.

Because of really bad traffic in Dubai on the day of our visit (it rained the day before which only happens a few times a year and leaves the area in chaos :)), we were way too late for the time slot booked. No worries, though. Everything was rearranged by the tour company while we were having lunch.

We entered without any wait at all and our guide made sure that we had plenty of time inside the Mosque (about 15-20 minutes with a guide and more than an hour on our own).

I liked that they didn’t rush us or cut the tour short and gave us the full experience. This meant that we were back in Dubai later than planned but that was no big deal since it was a full-day trip anyway.

Good to know: Also here, you will have to go through airport-style security. As mentioned before, there is a dress code as well. In general, they recommend long, loose ankle-length trousers or skirts. As a minimum, for men, shoulders and knees have to be covered. For women, the rules are stricter and you have to cover up everything except your face, hands, and feet (which means that sandals are ok).

Our tour provided Abaya dresses and scarves for women, which just made things simpler.

Drive back to Dubai

After our visit to the Mosque, the shuttle brought us back to Dubai. There was plenty of time to rest (or even sleep) on the bus.

Just as in the morning, the bus dropped us off at a place where they had private drivers waiting to take everyone back to their hotels. This way, nobody had to wait longer than necessary. The tour was really well organized and I couldn’t fault anything.

The only issues we had that day were related to exceptionally hard rain that left the roads blank and resulted in really bad traffic. Knowing that it only rains a few days per year in the UAE, the risk of you encountering the same is pretty low. Still, as mentioned before, I wouldn’t make any other plans for the evening – that will make your tour more relaxed.

Abu Dhabi Tour with Kids

If you are travelling with children and wonder if you can do a day tour to Abu Dhabi with kids, my answer is yes, of course. Most tours allow children of any age.

However, which tour to choose also depends on your family situation, how many kids you have, how old they are, etc. In addition, consider how well your children can handle a long bus ride, explore the landmarks, and – not to underestimate – practicalities such as the heat or not being able to use the bathroom or eat whenever they fancy.

That being said, if you can keep the kids busy in the car for 1.5- 2 hours and they can behave at the Mosque or the Presidential Palace, I see no reason why you couldn’t take them.

We did this Abu Dhabi tour with teens and – while they were the only kids in our group – we had no issues whatsoever. They were also truly fascinated by the incredible architecture we saw and truly enjoyed the day (having their phones for the long ride definitely helped though).

When I asked them about their top experiences on this trip, the Abu Dhabi day trip was in their top 3, together with a camel ride in the Dubai desert and a boat ride on the Burj Lake . They also really enjoyed Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark but ‘ranked’ the Abu Dhabi day trip as a more special experience.

TIP: If you want to take a day trip from Dubai to Abu Dhabi with children, consider booking a private tour. As already mentioned, pretty much all the tours we listed in this article can also be booked as private tours. It will be much more relaxing and you will spend less time in the car since they will pick you up from the hotel and drive directly to Abu Dhabi rather than gathering the whole group in a bus.

Alternatively, look into tours that visit the Mosque and maybe Ferrari World or one of the other theme parks on Yas Island (e.g. this tour ). That way, your tour has something for everyone in the family. That said, with very young kids, consider height restrictions for rollercoasters and similar.

Practical Info & Tips for Abu Dhabi Tours

Here is some additional information you may want to know when considering a tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi:

  • Most Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai include a pick-up/drop-off at your hotel . Keep in mind that the pick-up time can be up to an hour earlier than the official tour starting time (the same as the drop-off).
  • Pretty much all tours in the UAE include drinking water (on our tour, there was a large cool box full of water on the bus).
  • Keep in mind that entry to Sheikh Zayed Mosque might be restricted at certain times of the day during Islamic holidays and also on Fridays. Qasr Al Watan might also be closed if there are any political meetings at the palace. That’s another advantage of going with a tour – they know the schedules and adjust the visit. Still, you can never exclude a tiny chance of some last-minute changes when visiting places like that.
  • Some Abu Dhabi tours also include Abaya dresses for women at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, but that’s not always the case. So be sure to double-check that in the tour description if you need one.
  • There is no strict dress code at other places in Abu Dhabi, only at the Mosque. However, if you are visiting the Presidential Palace, they also recommend loose long pants or a skirt and a modest blouse/shirt that covers your shoulders.
  • Take some sunscreen lotion and sunglasses with you. A sun hat can be a good idea as well.
  • Pack only what you need – it will be easier to go through security checks everywhere. Furthermore, you can safely leave other belongings (food, sunscreen lotion, etc.) on the tour bus.
  • There are free bathroom facilities at all the sights we visited on this tour, but not on a bus. They also don’t stop anywhere along the way.
  • You get about 60-75 minutes for lunch on this tour, but depending on the traffic, it can be quite late in the day. So if you need some more energy during the day, pack some small snacks with you.

PRO TIP: There’s one thing we noticed when booking our tour to Abu-Dhabi is that on some days, prices were much higher than on others (this could be related to school holidays, public holidays, and similar). So if you are somewhat flexible, check a few different dates when booking the tour – sometimes, travelling a day earlier or later might save you quite some money.

  • You may want supportive walking sandals to keep cool on city sightseeing. Comfortable closed-toes shoes, such as sneakers or lightweight hiking boots, are best for activities in the desert.
  • Sun protection is very important. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit mosques or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis). In addition, we recommend women bring a light scarf as they may have to cover their heads and hair to order to enter mosques.
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered. Additionally, travelers must check to see if they need to apply for approval to travel with certain medications while in the United Arab Emirates with the Ministry of Health .
  • Temperatures in this region often exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius), especially during the summer months. Drinking plenty of water, limiting your alcohol intake and using proper sun protection is extremely important in order to prevent the effects of dehydration and heat stroke.
  • Be sure to take proper care for sun exposure by regularly applying sunscreen or covering up with long, loose-fitting layers.
  • There are inherent risks associated with water activities, particularly for those with preexisting medical conditions. Discuss your planned activities with your doctor or healthcare provider for the best advice on participation.
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
  • The United Arab Emirates (and Oman on the tour extension) is an Islamic country that follows Sharia law. While both Dubai and Abu Dhabi are considered more liberal than some neighboring cities, it’s important to note that very conservative laws governing public behavior are strictly enforced.
  • Among these laws are prohibitions against public displays of affection. Hand-holding is permissible, but kissing and other affectionate displays are expressly forbidden, even between married couples.
  • Obscenity laws are also upheld throughout the country. Offenses for using foul language and making indecent gestures are punishable by jail time.
  • The United Arab Emirates reflects its diverse history in its cuisine. Asian, Moroccan, and Levantine influences feature heavily, as do spices brought through the country by trade routes. Saffron, cardamom, and turmeric flavor many meals.
  • Fresh seafood and one-pot dishes, like fareeth, a stew made with vegetables and bread, and al harees, a porridge of barley and meat, are popular recipes.
  • In Oman (on the tour extension), you’ll find African and Indian cuisine reflected in many traditional recipes. Coconut, berries, and nutmeg are ingredients not often found in Middle Eastern dishes, but which play a big role in Omani kitchens. Don’t miss madrouba , a slow-cooked dish made with rice, chicken, and dried Persian limes.
  • At very traditional meals, diners eat with their hands, sometimes using pieces of flatbread to scoop up portions of food. Don’t be afraid to dig in!
  • Consumption of alcohol is strictly regulated throughout the country. Alcoholic beverages may only be served to non-Muslim visitors at certain licensed hotels and restaurants.
  • The United Arab Emirates operates on the European standard 220–240 volts and uses a Type G plug with three pins.
  • Oman (on the tour extension) operates on the European standard 220–240 volts and uses a Type C or G plug with two or three pins, respectively.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other electrical device without a built-in converter.
  • Air conditioning in Emirati hotels may be much cooler than what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • The United Arab Emirates is four hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and eight hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York City, it’s 8pm on tour.
  • You will use the United Arab Emirates dirham in Dubai and Abu Dhabi (plus the Omani rial in Oman on the tour extension).
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks, as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.
  • Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged.
  • Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See page four of your tour itinerary for more information.

Plan the Perfect Abu Dhabi Day Trip From Dubai

A guide to day tripping to the capital of the united arab emirates while staying in dubai.

It’s an easy freeway drive of just over an hour between the two biggest cities in the UAE – Dubai and Abu Dhabi – making it an incredibly popular day trip destination for Dubai visitors.

On this page, we’re going to share with you exactly how you get from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and the mustn’t-miss attractions to see in the UAE’s capital city.

Abu Dhabi From Dubai Tour Packages

What are the biggest tourist attractions to see in abu dhabi, transfers from dubai to abu dhabi, staying overnight in abu dhabi – hotel recommendations, more frequently asked questions abu dhabi day trips from dubai.

One of the most convenient ways to get between the two cities is to join an organized tour group.

They will arrange your pick-ups from Dubai and transfer you in air-conditioned comfort to Abu Dhabi’s most significant tourist sites (more on these below!)

There are so many different Abu Dhabi tours to choose from, so here’s what we suggest you look out for when choosing the best tours for one day in Abu Dhabi :

  • Is the tour private and personalised, a small group, or a large group?
  • Will you be picked up from your hotel, or need to meet at an arranged rendezvous point in Dubai?
  • Are meals included, or will you need to budget extra for a meal stop?
  • Can you add any additional stops not in the itinerary?

tour of abu dhabi and dubai

Larger group Abu Dhabi sightseeing tours may be more budget-friendly but will also give you limited flexibility in what you want to see and do in this beautiful city.

We highly recommend you book your tours through a reputable tour provider such as Get Your Guide . The reason being they have vetted all their tour providers giving you a variety of itineraries to choose from all in one spot. You can read reviews from past customers and most importantly they offer the ability to cancel up to 24 hours before for most tours, giving you flexibility in your plans.
  • Half Day Grand Mosque tour transfers to and from the Sheikh Zayed Mosque only from Dubai. This is a shared tour bus leaving Dubai around 8:45 AM and only taking 5 hours; you’ll be back to Dubai by early afternoon. Perfect if you only want to see the country’s largest mosque.
  • Abu Dhabi Full-Day Premium Sightseeing Tour – this is a great all-rounder tour for getting a taster of Abu Dhabi. You will, of course, see the mosque, but also a driving tour around the city’s other highlights, including the picturesque Corniche, Marina breakwater, Etihad Towers and a stop at Qasr al Watan, all with a guided tour in your chosen language. Note you’re given a lunch stop, but lunch is not included, excluded The Louvre.
  • Full-Day Private Tour Dubai to Abu Dhabi is best for a small group who wants to travel with a guide. Your itinerary will see you to the Mosque, Emirates Palace and Yas Marina Circuit with a buffet lunch thrown in ( but note, no Louvre or Qasr al Watan stops).
  • Abu Dhabi Full-Day Trip with Louvre & Mosque – if you just want to see the Grand Mosque and the Louvre, this is the tour for you. You get two-hour stops at each stop, which will be plenty of time if these are the main highlights you are after. It can be run as a small group with other guests or as an Abu Dhabi private tour.

Unfortunately, few tours will take you on a more flexible itinerary that takes you more in-depth through the souks and older parts of the city (not that there are many left, like in Dubai!). Most Abu Dhabi city tours from Dubai stick only to the main tourist attractions.

This will really depend on your interests, but undoubtedly the number one stop in Abu Dhabi is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – sometimes simply referred to as the Grand Mosque (not to be mistaken for Jumeirah Mosque in Dubai ).

We have a complete guide here on how to visit the Grand Mosque from Dubai .

There are tours that exclusively shuttle customers back and forward to the Grand Mosque, but you really need to see more in the city! (And be warned, the day-tripping buses from Dubai all seem to arrive en masse in Abu Dhabi, making it a very crowded experience by mid-morning).

Main cultural attractions in Abu Dhabi

In addition to the Grand Mosque, the next three most important tourist destinations in Abu Dhabi are:

  • The Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi –  a stunning Museum on Saadiyat Island that covers the “History of Humanity” in a superb waterfront setting is one of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi after the Mosque. Just the building itself is a Middle East masterpiece. NB Closed Mondays.
  • Qasr al Watan   – the Presidential Palace of the United Arab Emirates is an incredible new building to rival the beauty of the Grand Mosque. Open for daily tours, it’s situated at the end of the Abu Dhabi Corniche (about the furthermost point from Dubai!). Can occasionally be closed at short notice for diplomatic visits.
  • Qasr al Hosn   – a brilliant insight into the history of the United Arab Emirates and Abu Dhabi from early Bedouin days and ancient history through to the discovery of oil, federation and the modern-day city – tours, special workshops and daily events are offered, but few tours seem to include this important stop on their pre-arranged itineraries.
You can find a complete guide to Abu Dhabi’s best cultural attractions on our sister site Abu Dhabi Travel Planner.

Be greeted by Al Ayyala dances at Qasr al Hosn in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi important historic building

Other sightseeing in Abu Dhabi

For general sightseeing, some popular attractions you might want to include:

  • Step inside the stunning Emirates Palace Hotel. You can get some amazing snaps on the front steps or head inside to enjoy some local delicacies, from camel burgers to gold leaf tea, at one of Abu Dhabi’s most opulent buildings. A respectable dress code (knees covered) is required for men and women.
  • Capture the city from above at Observation Deck at 300 – the city’s highest observation tower from Level 74 of Etihad Towers, ( Conrad Etihad Towers ). Not the city’s tallest building – that building does not have an observation floor – but nonetheless, Etihad Towers is a great place to get your bearings over the city and lovely for a morning or afternoon tea stop.
  • Visit the Founders Memorial and walk along the Marina Breakwater for some fresh air and spectacular city views.
  • Visit the newly opened National Aquarium Abu Dhabi and explore the new Al Qana Waterfront district.
  • Take a trip out to the Falcon Hospital a great insight into local culture and a really worthwhile stop if you can join one of their twice-daily Falcon World Tours.
  • Enjoy a unique walk through the wetlands of Abu Dhabi at Jubail Mangroves Park – it sits between Yas Island and Saadiyat Island, a superb nature stop you won’t believe is so near the city.
  • Wahat al Karama – the war memorial that sits opposite the Grand Mosque. A poignant spot and a beautiful photo opportunity of both the memorial and the Mosque.
  • Some tours may still include a stop at the Heritage Village – but in all honesty, we’d recommend Qasr al Hosn above as the better and more comprehensive stop for history buffs.
  • Desert Safari’s in Abu Dhabi are just as popular as in Dubai, though you’ll get a pretty similar desert experience with camel rides, dune bashing and a traditional dinner, so just choose one of the other.

Yas Island Theme Parks & Grand Prix Circuit Abu Dhabi

For theme park fun, you really need to allow at least 4 to 6 hours to tackle even one of the mega theme parks on Yas Island – these are Yas Waterworld , Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi , Ferrari World and SeaWorld .

Technically, you could squeeze in a theme park alongside a day trip to the cultural sites, but we highly recommend you make a full day for each experience so you are not rushed. There’s really no time to fully enjoy a water park or rollercoaster day if you’re being rushed back on a bus.

You can find our complete guide to visiting the Yas Island theme parks in Abu Dhabi from Dubai here.

Ferrari World on Yas Island Abu Dhabi

Yas Island is also home to the famous Yas Marina Grand Prix track. You may not get time on a day tour to do much more than snap some photos, but motorsports fans should put aside extra time on a day trip to Abu Dhabi to take part in either a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the track or, even better a circuit driving experience.

For something truly unique, on a Monday and Wednesday night from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, you can walk, run or cycle the Yas Marina Grand Prix track! Join in with local residents to enjoy this truly unique track experience – completely FREE! See the timetable and any planned track closures here.

If you are seeking to self-tour in Abu Dhabi, all you will need to arrange is getting yourself by public or private transport to Abu Dhabi or arrange a hire car.

By road, the journey from Dubai to Abu Dhabi takes between 1 and 2 hours, depending on your mode of transport and exact location. The cities sit about 160kms apart.

This really detailed guide sets out all of your transport options getting between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Note that the 100 and 101 Intercity Buses will take you to the central bus station in Abu Dhabi , Al Wadha; all the tourist attractions we have set out here are quite spread out over the city, so you will then need to take local bus services (and get yourself a Hafilat card ) or several taxis to jump between the various sightseeing destinations.

Another new option for visiting only the Louvre and Qasr al Watan is the Cultural Express . This bus service leaves from Sheraton, Mall of the Emirates, at 9:00 AM and takes passengers to these two Abu Dhabi cultural attractions before shuttling guests back to Dubai, arriving around 8:00 PM.

There’s a further detailed guide here to public transport within Abu Dhabi.

Taxi from Dubai to Abu Dhabi

If budget permits, you can simply take a standard Dubai Hala taxi from off the street in Dubai, or book one on the Careem App to your location

Depending on your pick-up and drop-off points, this should cost you around 300 AED from Downtown Dubai to Abu Dhabi Airport.

From Dubai Airport to the Abu Dhabi Corniche area, you are looking at more like 400 AED. All taxes run on a meter and are a reliable form of transportation in the UAE.

Hiring your own car from Dubai to Abu Dhabi

Hiring your own car will grant you the most flexibility but may not be the cheapest for only 1 day.

You will also need to drive on Dubai’s freeways which can be challenging at times with the fast and heavy flow of traffic!

With the (very) high-speed limits on the E11 Freeway, it is a quick drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi. Most tourist locations, other than in the city centre of Abu Dhabi, have free visitor parking (otherwise, you’ll need a few dirhams in change for meters or use a parking app ).

  • You can compare prices for hiring a car in Dubai here from our preferred supplier discovercars.com

Hiring a private driver for an Abu Dhabi day tour from Dubai

If you are not interested in a private tour but want someone to drive you from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, you can use ride-sharing apps such as Uber or Careem or try these driver options:

  • Private driver from Dubai to Abu Dhabi – the best choice if you’re after a reliable driver service one way to Abu Dhabi (NB this is just a point-to-point driver, they won’t take you around all the tourist sites)
  • Get Transfer – is a great app to plan your daily driver needs. You can ask drivers to “bid” on your journey cost and choose the driver that fits your needs best in terms of vehicle, pricing and availability.
  • Welcome Pickups – a good site for sourcing reliable, English-speaking driver services to and from Dubai

If time permits, an overnight stay in Abu Dhabi is essential to fit everything we have mentioned here – a day tour to Abu Dhabi will barely scratch the surface

  • If you are visiting the theme parks on Yas Island, then the Yas Plaza Hotels should be your top pick – there are several to choose from; our favourite for a unique experience is staying in the W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island , which straddles the Yas Marina GP race track.
  • Alternatively, try two newly opened hotels – The WB Abu Dhabi (Warner Bros. themed hotel) is perfectly located for accessing WB World and Yas Waterworld, whilst the Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island is the top choice for the happening new area of Yas Bay if you want to be surrounded by restaurants and nightlife.
  • If your main focus is seeing the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, there are several hotels in an area known as Bab Al Bahr – just on the mainland before you cross to Abu Dhabi island. Why not try the Fairmont Bab al Bahr , or the Shangri-La Hoel Qaryat Al Beri .
  • A great budget alternative (still 4-star!) is Traders Hotel Qaryat Al Beri . These are all glorious spots to watch the sunset behind the Grand Mosque to the west. There are lots of dining choices in the Souk at Qaryat Al Beri or take a traditional abra ( paid ) across the Grand Canal to the Venetian Village at the Ritz Carlton for a great range of restaurants and buzzing nightlife.

The Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi Grand Canal

  • If you’d like to mix in some resort sunshine with your stay, Saadiyat Island , adjacent to where you will find the Louvre Abu Dhabi, is our top pick. Here there is a string of 5 luxury resorts to choose from along Saadiyat Beach . They don’t come cheap but are simply stunning (and maybe just a few dirhams cheaper than their Dubai counterparts – worth checking!)
  • On a budget? There are plenty of inner-city hotels in Abu Dhabi offered with reputable brand names attached that you can comfortably get a room for two under 300 AED per night. You can try Al Maha Arjaan by Rotana, Ramada Abu Dhabi Corniche or Southern Sun Abu Dhabi .
There’s a good guide here to understanding the different areas to stay in Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai

The cooler months of winter, from around November to April, are the best time to visit Abu Dhabi and the UAE for the most comfortable experience and pleasant weather.

We’re never going to deny the UAE in the summer months is HOT!! That said, not impossible to visit. Prices are cheaper, and crowds are low. An Abu Dhabi tour will largely see you in air-conditioned comfort. The Grand Mosque will involve a fair bit of walking outside but stops at the Louvre, and Qasr Al Watan, for example, will see you largely indoors. Take plenty of water with you and something to protect your head out in the sun.

No, the rules requiring regular PCR tests and the use of the Al Hosn App were abolished on 7 November 2022. You can now freely move between Dubai and Abu Dhabi without a border crossing and without needing a PCR test result to show on the Al Hosn App. Learn more about the current entry rules to Abu Dhabi on the Visit Abu Dhabi website .

Sheikh Zayid Mosque

Scheich Zayed Moschee innen

The Sheikh Zayid mosque is one of the most impressive and therefore one of the most popular sights in Abu Dhabi. The Sheikh Zayid mosque offers space for a total of 40,000 people. It is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and the eighth largest mosque in the world. For comparison: Al-Masjid al-Harām in Mecca has a capacity for around 820,000 visitors.

The mosque cupola of the Sheikh Zayid mosque, with a diameter of just over 32 meters, is the second-largest cupola in the world. There are also seven exquisite Swarovski crystal chandeliers inside the mosque. With a diameter of 10 metres and a height of 15 metres, the chandeliers are among the largest in the world. That's not all: the hand-knotted carpet inside the mosque holds another world record. With an area of 5627 square meters and a weight of 47 tons, it is the largest carpet of its kind. You will rarely see so much marble and gold leaf as you will in this mosque. If you visit Abu Dhabi, don't miss the Sheikh Zayid mosque!

The mosque is accessible for everyone, but out of respect one should follow the rules of the mosque. Among them are long trousers and tops for men and women, as well as a headscarf for women. At the entrance, appropriate robes can be borrowed free of charge. In addition, shoes must be taken off before entering.

Louvre Museum

Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi

The Louvre Art Museum in Abu Dhabi impresses with its location on the island of Saadiyat alone. It was opened in 2017. Saadiyat Island is a cultural district with several museums. The museum cooperates with the famous Louvre Museum in Paris, which is the most visited museum in the world. The museum's architecture was designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel and combines modern architecture with Arabic building tradition. The building complex consists of 55 rectangular buildings, among which there are water basins. The rectangular buildings are arranged next to each other as well as on top of each other. As a highlight, a net-like dome was stretched over them. It consists of 8,000 metal stars through which the sun's rays radiate onto the underlying building and water. This creates a special atmosphere inside the museum.

The works of the Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi range from antiquity to the 21st century. The best-known works include a sculpture of a Bactrian princess from the 3rd millennium BC, an ancient Egyptian bronze statuette of Osiris, a Buddha's head from the Chinese dynasty of Northern Qi and a South Indian bronze figure of a dancing Shiva. The Louvre Abu Dhabi also regularly hosts interesting special exhibitions on various themes.

Even those who do not see themselves as art connoisseurs will appreciate the Louvre Museum and Saadiyat for their impressive architecture.

Etihad Towers

Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi

The Etihad Towers consist of a total of five towers that characterize the cityscape of Abu Dhabi. Most of you probably know the Etihad Towers from the well-known film "Fast and Furious 7". Three of the five towers are used as purely residential buildings. The 5-star hotel Jumeirah at Etihad Towers is located in a tower of the Etihad Towers.

On the 74th floor of the second Etihad Tower, there is a visitor terrace at an altitude of 300 meters. From there you will have a breathtaking view of Abu Dhabi. The viewing platform is connected to the Jumeirah Hotel of the other tower. The Etihad Towers also has an office building. Right next to the Etihad Towers is one of the most exclusive shopping streets in the United Arab Emirates: pure luxury.

Abu Dhabi - The Capital of the UAE

With over 2.33 million inhabitants and an area of 67,340 square kilometers, it is the largest emirate. Only about 20% of the population are locals. The many international influences of the other 80% have created a fascinating combination of tradition and modernity. The main religion in Abu Dhabi is Islam. However, the United Arab Emirates are very tolerant of other religions and cultures. The ruler of Abu Dhabi is Khalifa bin Zayid Al Nahyan.

Abu Dhabi consists of the city area and the Al Ain rocky area but also consists of a large expanse of desert landscape. It is characterised by extensive sandy beaches, a multitude of small islands off the coast, oases, mountain landscapes and the endless deserts. The Emirate of Abu Dhabi is the safest city in the world.

In addition to the many attractions in Abu Dhabi, there are also a number of luxurious and unique hotels. Due to Abu Dhabi's good economic situation, the hotels have a very high standard and offer a great deal of luxury and comfort. Abu Dhabi is also very interesting in terms of price. Abu Dhabi is considered by industry experts to be much cheaper than Dubai , which is not least intended to create incentives for tourists.

One of the most popular hotels in Abu Dhabi is the Emirates Palace Hotel , which belongs to the Kempinski Hotel Group. It is one of the most luxurious hotels in the world. Want some examples? In one year, approximately 5 kilograms of edible gold leaf will be used in this luxury hotel. As a guest of the hotel, you have your own butler at your disposal. The Hotel Fairmont Abu Dhabi Marina - a landmark of Abu Dhabi - shines with its special architecture and pure luxury. Other well-known hotels in Abu Dhabi are the Park Hyatt Hotel, the Zaya Nurai Island Hotel and the Jumeirah at Etihad Towers.

NASA releases satellite photos of Dubai and Abu Dhabi before and after record flooding

  • The normally dry desert country was pummeled with roughly a year's worth of rain in less than a day.
  • The deluge closed schools and businesses, grounded hundreds of flights, and destroyed cars, businesses and other property.
  • It threw daily life into chaos as many residents lost power and running water or were trapped either inside their homes or in airports, or wherever they happened to be when the storm hit.

NASA released photos of parts of Dubai and Abu Dhabi before and after the United Arab Emirates was hit by record rainfall last week that caused dangerous floods and paralyzed much of the country.

The images, taken by the NASA Earth Observatory on Friday using Landsat data from the U.S. Geological Survey , show large patches of water all over the desert and urban landscape of the UAE where previously there was none – almost looking as if small lakes had appeared.

"Some areas remained flooded on April 19, when Landsat 9 passed over the region for the first time since the storms," NASA wrote on its Earth Observatory website.

Flash floods that formed on April 16 led to water engulfing cars, in some areas fully submerging them, leading hundreds of drivers to abandon their vehicles on roads to escape the rising water levels.

The normally dry desert country in the Gulf was pummeled with roughly a year's worth of rain in less than a day, more than it has ever seen in a single storm since records for the UAE began in 1949.

The first image from NASA shows part of Dubai and the surrounding area on April 3, taken by Landsat 9, an Earth observation satellite operated by a partnership between the U.S. Geological Survey and NASA. The second was taken on April 19, as Landsat 9 passed over the region for the first time since the record rainstorms hit the country.

The second image, acquired with the satellite's OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager 2), "shows flooding in numerous parts of the emirate. The image is false color (bands 6-5-3) to emphasize the presence of water, which appears blue," NASA wrote.

The deluge closed schools and businesses, grounded hundreds of flights, and destroyed cars, businesses and other property. It threw daily life into chaos as many residents lost power and running water or were trapped either inside their homes or in airports, or wherever they happened to be when the storm hit.

The UAE's National Center of Meteorology said that eastern parts of the country measured up to 250 millimeters — 10 inches — of rain in less than 24 hours. By contrast, in a full year the UAE typically sees 5.5 to 8 inches of rainfall per year.

Due to a lack of drainage infrastructure and the fact that the country's urban spaces are paved over, much of the water had nowhere to go, exacerbating the flooding in many areas.

The country's cleanup efforts are ongoing, and numerous problems still remain in some areas where infrastructure has been severely damaged and many residents say they still don't have running water or electricity.

One multistory apartment building near the border of Dubai and the emirate of Sharjah has cracked and tilted over due to structural damage from the storm, and was fully evacuated on Friday because it is in danger of collapsing.

The UAE's central bank has issued a directive to local banks and insurance companies to allow loan repayment deferrals of six months, in an effort to help flood-hit residents and businesses.

Satellite photo of part of Dubai on April 3, taken by Landsat 9, an earth observation satellite operated by a partnership between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Several flights to Dubai were cancelled and diverted Thursday, airport authorities announced, as heavy rains hit the United Arab Emirates for the second time in a month.

An airport authority spokesperson said five inbound flights were diverted overnight, while nine arriving and four departing flights were cancelled.

In April, heavy thunderstorms dumped the heaviest rains ever recorded in the UAE in a span of hours, flooding portions of major highways and Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel and a hub for the long-haul carrier Emirates. The airport ended up needing 22 tankers with vacuum pumps to get water off its grounds.

Authorities warned residents to stay home ahead of Thursday’s rain, announcing that they should work remotely, and that schools will hold classes online.

Although Thursday’s rain did not cause major problems or flooding, authorities still issued warnings on Wednesday and took precautions.

The flooding two weeks ago quickly overwhelmed the UAE’s drainage systems, flooded out neighborhoods, business districts and even portions of the 12-lane Sheikh Zayed Highway, which links Dubai and the neighboring emirate of Abu Dhabi . Many residents lost their belongings when their homes flooded, and many cars were destroyed.
