Experience the historical charm of Bristol! ★★★★★

Yesterday’s tour was a perfect combination of learning about street art, history, and architecture. Peter was knowledgeable about the city and it’s culture. We walked away with a better understanding of Bristol and lots of ideas about how to spend the rest of the day.

Pete gave a really interesting and engaging tour - the combination of history and street art, combined with local knowledge and a love of the city was excellent.

We enjoyed Luke’s Walking Tour immensely!! He had such enthusiasm for the Street Art of Bristol it was contagious. Luke’s booming voice was crystal clear that we could hear every word even with a large group of 28! Plus we learnt lots about the colourful character, Blackbeard! Thoroughly recommend this tour.

The tour was really informative and I learnt a lot about the city and parts I had overlooked. The guide was passionate and really friendly and helpful

A. GENERAL RULES: This event is held under the SCCA Solo Rules plus the rules and procedures found on this event page, using all Open and Ladies National classes and National Supplemental classes, as defined by the 2022 Solo Rules. All class changes must be approved by the Chief Steward or their designee once check-in closes.

B. COURSE WALKS:  Courses will be open for walking at the following times. See Event Specific communications for more detail or specific days if the event is a multi-event weekend.

C. SCALES:  Scales will be available to the competitors during the event free of charge under the supervision of Impound. You will be restricted from using the scales when they are being used by Impound. Consult with the Chief of Impound if in doubt.

D. SAFETY:

  • A speed limit of 12 MPH will be enforced at the event site including pre-grid and grid. Tire spins, rapid speed or direction changes, or other "abnormal/unusual" driving techniques are strictly prohibited throughout the event site, other than during competition. See Event Chairman for questions or problems.
  • Drivers are responsible for the actions of their crew and guests.
  • Photographers desiring to enter a course area must be approved by the course Safety Steward and be accompanied by a spotter. A minor may not serve as a spotter.
  • The operation of motorized vehicles, whether gas or electric powered, such as but not limited to, golf carts and other personal transportation vehicles, is limited to persons who can present a valid driver’s license.
  • Pylons, tape, and/or other barriers will define "No Parking" areas near the course. Cars parked in such a manner that block or restrict defined driveways or entrances to course areas will be towed away without notice, at the expense of the vehicle operator/owner.
  • Skateboards, hoverboards, Segways, bicycles, and similar conveyances may not be ridden in the Grid area.
  • All incidents involving injury and/or property damage occurring on the event site or felt associated with the event will be reported as soon as possible to the Event Chairman or Chief Safety Steward.

E. ORDER OF RUNNING:

  • Competition will be on two successive days with one course run each day. Runs will be scheduled in 2-6 heats each day depending on number of entries (heats will be assigned by car class).
  • There will be a grid 100 and grid 200. Therefore, drivers are to position their cars in grid 100 or grid 200 as assigned. If the car is not in their specified grid position when the first car of the heat is instructed to the start line, they may lose a run/or runs depending on arrival time to grid.
  • All drivers will be assigned a "home" space number for grid purposes where they may leave any necessary equipment. After each run, all drivers will return to their "home." Do not block the access lanes between spaces. Dual Drivers will have the same grid position.
  • During competition, the course will be open for walk-through prior to the 3 rd heat each day, if time permits.
  • All drivers will be offered three runs on each course, conditions permitting.
  • No competitor shall take a second run until after all drivers in their class have completed their first run. After the completion of each run, vehicles must return directly to the grid. Vehicles are not permitted to depart the grid area for service.
  • A minimum of five minutes must have elapsed between runs for any car. This includes reruns or runs for another driver of the same car. A grid marshal will be specifically assigned to handle two-driver cars and will keep a time log to assure compliance with the five-minute minimum between runs. The time shall be measured from the time the car returns to grid until the time it leaves grid for the start line.
  • Drivers must proceed from the grid to the start line when so directed by a grid official, or that run will be scored as a DSQ if a mechanical is not called before reaching the start beam.
  • Heat assignments will be posted on the event page on the SCCA website – SCCA.com –. It is your responsibility to know when your car should be in grid.

F. PENALTIES FOR INCORRECT NUMBERS OR BARCODES:

  • Competitors at the start line with the wrong number on their car, 2 sets of numbers, or the incorrect class showing will receive a warning for the first offense, a cone penalty for the second offense and may receive a DSQ for three or more offenses at the same event.
  • Competitors at the scanner with more than one (1) barcode showing on the helmet will receive a warning for the first offense, a cone penalty for the second offense and may receive a DSQ for three or more offenses at the same event.
  • A driver at the scanner or the start line without the appropriate helmet decal (Solo 2022) will be directed away from the start and lose the run.

Live timing can be found at sololive.scca.com .

A. DRIVER ELIGIBILITY: Refer to Solo Rules 4.2 and 4.1.A

B. DRIVER MEETING NOTES:  There will be a drivers’ meeting on Saturday of the event (1 st National Tour competition day on a multi-event weekend). Changes to the event details and other items of information as well as the names of all event officials will be included in the material provided on the event page at SCCA.com. IT IS A COMPETITOR’S RESPONSIBILITY TO CHECK THE EVENT PAGE AT SCCA.COM FOR CHANGES TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL REGULATIONS.

C. ENTRANTS AS WORKERS: Solo Rules Rule 6

Early work assignments that offset a normal work assignment must be pre-approved by the Event Chairman and/or staff. These assignments must be extremely limited to prevent loss of critical support during the event. Serving as a volunteer prior to the event is greatly appreciated and a key element in the success of this event. However, this does not automatically offset a normal work assignment.

D. WORKER MEETING NOTES:  Workers will report to the Worker Check-In person at the Lincoln Drivers' Center (Tech Trailer) before the beginning of the last run of the heat prior to their assigned work heat. First heat workers will report 15 minutes prior to the start of the event. Failure to report on time will result in an additional work assignment after the finish of the last heat on that day. Not complying with these rules will result in disqualification.

It is possible that your work assignment within your heat may have changed due to cancellations or class changes. A flag will be raised at the Lincoln Drivers' Center to let you know it is time to check in and that someone is available to get you checked in. Specialty areas (Grid, Timing, Impound, Sound & Safety) will check in with their chiefs.

The worker sheet will be posted at the Lincoln Drivers' Center and on the SCCA event page online when check-in closes so competitors can verify work assignments. It is your responsibility to know when you should report for your work assignment.

A. VEHICLE ELIGIBILITY:  Competition is open to all vehicles conforming to the Open and Ladies National classes and National Supplemental classes, as defined by the 2022 Solo Rules.

B. DECALS:

  • The Tire Rack® is the title sponsor for all 2022 SCCA® National Solo® events. Participants in these events are required to run the title sponsor decal, which is a windshield decal that is to be used at the top of the windshield. Vehicles without windshields or with plastic windshields may place the decal on the front of the car in a highly visible location approved by the Chief of Compliance. Decals other than the official Tire Rack® decal, except those required by National Tour Staff, are prohibited on the windshield.
  • Additional required event decals are one SCCA® with wheel (on the front) and 2 National Tour decals (one on each side).

C. TECH PROCEDURES:

  • Safety Inspections (Solo Rules 3.3.3) should be completed at the event site and will be completed by competitors using a Self-Tech form.
  • Solo Rules 3.7 Vehicle Identification will be checked. The official Tire Rack decal and tech stickers are the only decals permitted on the windshield
  • Competition vehicles that have a required minimum weight (Street Modified, Prepared, Modified, and Kart) will inform Tech of that weight so the weight and vehicle wheelbase can be posted on the tech sticker. This is to allow other competitors to know the declared minimum weight and to reduce any delays at the scales during event impound procedures.

D. IMPOUND PROCEDURES:

  • All competition vehicles will be impounded per Solo Rules 6.10 to assure that competitors have complied with the SCCA National Solo Rules and the Supplementary Regulations for the event. Car information verification will also be conducted in Impound.
  • Vehicles will be impounded on both days of competition in your assigned grid area. After your last run each day, return to your original grid position, except as noted in section D.7 below. The driver of each vehicle or a designated representative must remain in the grid/impound area near the vehicle during the impound period. Karts will be allowed to be driven to the scales under close supervision by event officials. Impounded vehicles may be held until the results are audited.
  • Impound officials may inspect cars during impound and may require removing wheels and or components as part of the inspection procedure. Competitors are responsible for performing these procedures as required and for using proper equipment (e.g., jack stands to safely support a raised vehicle). Competitors are responsible for having appropriate rules and documentation of specifications
  • Competitors may observe but Impound inspectors must not be hindered in their assigned duties by anyone in any way.
  • Impound does not act on hearsay information regarding competitor concerns. If competitors suspect a rule violation, they should file protests in accordance with the National Solo Rules. Section 8, Protests.
  • Vehicles under protest will remain in impound. They may be escorted by a designated Impound or Protest Committee official to another location as instructed by the Protest Committee.
  • Classes that have minimum weights are required to be weighed. It is the competitors’ responsibility to know if their vehicle has a minimum weight requirement.

E. SOUND POLICY: Refer to Solo Rules Rule Appendix I. Sound requirements are strictly enforced.

F. TIMING AND SCORING: Refer to Solo Rules Rule 7

  • The total score will consist of the best-timed run from each course, combined to create one time.
  • Scores will be posted. See the Operating Steward to resolve problems. THE TIMING & SCORING TRAILER IS OFF LIMITS FOR COMPETITORS, CREW, AND SPECTATORS unless invited to enter by an event official.
  • Live timing is available at sololive.scca.com .

You must register for contingencies each year through the SCCA website, prior to competing for all Silver Gold, and Platinum contingency programs. In some cases, you'll need to register with the sponsor as well, so please read each program's registration requirements carefully. Decals will be available at tech inspection during each event. Bronze programs require registering and receiving decals directly from that sponsor, please refer to the program descriptions for more information.

GET THE DETAILS

Registration Policy (after online closes)

Online registration closes at   3:00 pm Central, Tuesday prior to the event .  After online registration closes, you can still register for the event on-site during regular registration times on the day prior to the competition.  Please note, there will be a late entry fee imposed on all on-site registrations.  If the event is already full we will follow the waitlist policy (see below).

Car Number Policy

Car numbers selection will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  Only one- or two-digit numbers will be allowed (i.e., 1 through 99). Exception: Where there are two drivers in one car, in one class, then the second driver MUST be 100 plus the first driver's number (99 and 199). The Motorsportsreg.com system does not allow drivers to reserve their co-driver's number. With that, if there is a conflict where someone signs up for a number and someone else who is not the co-driver signs up for the corresponding number, the person that signed up first for either the two or three-digit number is the owner of that combination. If you notice a discrepancy in numbers, please contact Nikki Edwards ( [email protected] ).  Motorsportreg.com provides the date/time of registrations to determine who registered first and is the rightful owner of the number combination. If desired, drivers of the same car but in different classes (open and ladies) may use the same car number. Drivers of the same car in the same class must submit separate entries. Car numbers above 199 are not allowed at National Solo events.

Cancellation Policy

All cancellations must be made in writing. Please contact Nikki Edwards ( [email protected] )  with questions or to cancel. Please review valuable information regarding refunds below.

Partial refunds (SCCA keeps $50) for cancellations IF: Entrant cancels PRIOR to 7:00 pm Central the day of on-site check-in.

NO REFUNDS for cancellations IF:  Entrant cancels AFTER 7:00 pm Central the day of on-site check-in.

Waitlist Policy

The Tire Rack SCCA National Solo events (ProSolo, National Tour, CAM Challenge) are adopting a revised waitlist policy for 2022:

  • The initial entry cap will be set 15 entrants lower than the final cap.
  • When an event hits the initial entry cap, the remaining competitors will be put on a waitlist.
  • Just like the 2021 Tire Rack National Solo season, the waitlist will be published to show the order in which each member is on the list, based on the order of entry receipt and the timestamp listed on the MSR registration. This is the order in which entries will move off the waitlist and into the event when a cancellation is processed.  This list does not automatically update in real-time but is rather a report from the registration system that will be run periodically so that those on the waitlist can understand their current position . Given that the list is not updating in real-time, there may be names at the top of the waitlist that has already moved into the event and there may be names that have registered onto the waitlist that do not yet appear.
  • When 15 entrants have registered with the region of record of the hosting region the cap will be increased to the final. If 15 hosting region members have not registered 2 weeks prior to the event the cap will be increased to its final.
  • For entrants on the waitlist, there is no guarantee the entrant will get into the event.
  • As entrants on the entry list cancel, the next person in line on the waitlist will be notified via email that there has been a cancellation and they have now been moved into the event. When that entrant is moved over, they will be required to log into MSR and pay for the event (MSR does not charge waitlisted competitors). The entrant will have 24 hours to pay for the event before that entrant is placed back on the waitlist and the next entrant is put into the event.
  • We will continue to move entrants off the waitlist as we receive cancellations up until the time online registration closes.
  • After online registration closes, we will not update the waitlist online. However, if there is a cancellation after online registration closes, entrants on the waitlist will be contacted in waitlist order to let them know a spot in the event has opened. They will be instructed to contact the on-site event Administrator to claim their spot and remit payment. The waitlist will also be printed and posted in the timing trailer on Friday morning. As cancellations come in during the registration/check-in day, we will try to contact the top person on the waitlist to see if they are available and still want to get into the event that day.
  • At the end of registration on the day prior to the competition, the waitlist will be closed, and no new entries will be allowed into the event.

Onsite Event Registration and Car/Class Changes

For any event that is not sold out, on-site registration is allowed on the day prior to competition .  All on-site registrations will be charged the event late fee (see event registration page for pricing). Car and class changes are allowed at check-in on the day prior to competition. Any car or class changes on the days of competition require the approval of the Chief Steward for the event.

Tech Inspection Procedure:

The self-tech inspection procedure below will be used to minimize contact between drivers and event workers by expediting and decentralizing the process.

  • A Chief Technical Inspector (CTI) will be appointed as per the National Solo Rules, Section 5.6. The role of the CTI will be to oversee the process and if needed conduct additional inspections of vehicles.
  • A Self-Tech Inspection form will be available at the event site and online before the event. Go to the Event Page and click on the link for Tech Form (located under the Event information heading on the right side of the web page), download, and print. Bring the form with you to the event- ONE FOR EACH DRIVER.

  • While still in the paddock, the class designation and numbers will be placed on the vehicle. If the driver has them at this time, also place on the vehicle any SCCA required decals and appropriate contingency decals. SCCA required decals and some contingency decals are available at Tech Inspection.
  • When the above is completed, the driver takes the vehicle AND their helmet to Tech Inspection, staying in the car while there.
  • The driver gives their Self-Tech Inspection form to the CTI, or their designee, and shows them their helmet, again, staying in the car.
  • The car will receive a quick review for numbers and class letters, plus any obvious mechanical issues.
  • While remaining in the car, they will be asked if they need any SCCA or contingency decals AND if there are any changes to their event registration information (car, class, number, tires, etc.).
  • If there are no changes, they will be checked in for the event at Tech and will not have to go to Registration Check-in. They can then return to the paddock
  • If there are changes to their registration information, they will keep their tech form and exit the Tech area with their vehicle. They must go to the SCCA Timing Trailer at the designated time shown in the supps to complete any changes.

Check-in Procedure:

The check-in procedure below will be used to further simplify the process.

  • Event supps will no longer be handed out when you check-in. They will be available by request. Supps will be posted online on the Event page as well as on-site in the following areas: Tech/Impound, Lincoln Driver’s Center & on the Timing Trailer.
  • Schedules shown on the Event supps are the official schedule for the event.
  • Work assignments will be posted on the Event page. A report showing the class listing will be created and it contains information about competitors’ registrations, including work assignments. Information will be available when you tech if you ask.
  • If you have NO CHANGES to your registration, you can proceed through tech, turn in your tech form and you will be checked in for the event.
  • If you HAVE CHANGES to your registration, you can proceed through tech, but you will need to KEEP your tech form and make your way to the SCCA Timing Trailer at the designated time for registration changes (see the supps for times). You will be checked-in for the event at that time.
  • Once check-in is closed for the event, a finalized worker sheet will be posted online to the Event Page (8:15am). Please check there to verify that your work assignment has not changed due to class changes, cancellations, etc. Any work assignments that have changed will be highlighted in grey.

Events calendar, roger williams university.

Bristol was incorporated September 1, 1681, and developed with a 24-block grid pattern (8 blocks along Hope and 4 blocks from Thames to Wood Streets), which is still evident today. The original streets intersect at 90-degree angles, and includes a public common, on which the original meeting house was built. The basic street pattern was kept when "small" streets were added. In addition to this walk, wander around the streets and enjoy the town: with the street pattern you won't get lost! Many buildings have plaques with the date(s) of construction and the original owner. (photos by Ashley Bernardo)

tour of bristol 2022

Start your walking tour of downtown Bristol at the Visitor Center in the Burnside Memorial Hall, 400 Hope Street, east side of the street. The tour is approx 1.3 miles.

400 Hope Street, Burnside Memorial Hall, 1883 . This building was named after Ambrose Burnside, who fought in the Civil War and then was Senator and Governor of Rhode Island. Constructed and used as the Town Hall until 1969, this Richardsonian Romanesque Revival building was dedicated by President Chester A. Arthur and Rhode Island Governor Augustus O. Bourn of Bristol. Today the building serves as an annex to the present Town Hall and houses the Bristol Visitor Center.

2.

375 Hope Street, St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 1861 St. Michael's Episcopal Church was founded in 1718 by the London- based Church of England's Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. This is the fourth church built on this site. The firstchurch was burned by the British on Sunday, May 25, 1778. The present building dates to 186 and is in the High German Gothic. The original spire was removed after the Gale of 1891 and the tower was altered to its present configuration. The clock was installed in 1871.

3.

341 Hope Street, John Howe House "Four Eagles", 1808 This two-story nearly square Federal house is noted for the four eagles on its balustrade, carved by sailors on board the "Yankee," famous privateer during the War of 1812 and presented to their Captain, Benjamin Churchill, who purchased the house in 1822. Howe, the builder of the house, was a graduate of Brown University and a lawyer. Byron Diman a former RI Governor purchased the house in 1825 and made three enlargements during his ownership.

4.

344 Hope Street, Royal Diman House , 1792 Diman, a cooper (barrel maker) and trader, built this 21⁄2 story asymmetrical Federal house. The interior was restored with elaborate Federal wood work and moldings salvaged from several houses on Thames Street demolished in the 1930's to build the Premier Thread Factory, (now part of Stone Harbor Condominiums, see number 8.)

Return to Church Street (1/2 block) and turn towards the waterfront.

Return to Church Street (1/2 block) and turn towards the waterfront.

9 Church Street, William Throop, Jr, 1805/1879 This brick Federal house, now painted gray, has stone pilasters flanking the front door, possibly carved by Throop, who was a stone carver. His shop, located on the DeWolf wharf on Thames Street, was washed away during the September 1815 gale. Brick was an expensive, luxury item, so few houses were built of brick. If you look to the house on your right, notice that it has brick ends.

As you approach the waterfront you will be at Rockwell Park. The original streets were platted (laid out) into the harbor to the ship's channel. In addition to the park, which is open to the public, is the Prudence Island Ferry. Turn to the right and continue north on Thames Street.

259 Thames Street, Bank of Bristol/DeWolf Inn, 1797 , with 20th century restorations. The DeWolf brothers built this as Bristol's first bank. Following a varied history, it was restored to the 18th- century original appearance in the late 20th century.

7.

267 Thames Street, DeWolf Warehouse/ Tavern, 1818 . This long 2-story structure was built as a warehouse by the DeWolf family members who were active in the Triangle Trade between the United States, West Indies and Africa. The alley between the Tavern and the Bank of Bristol was originally open water serving as a slip for ships. 8. 345 Thames Street, Namquit Mill, 1843 . This mill is one of Bristol's first mills. Mills were often located by water so that goods could be transported easily. As many other mills, this mill has been renovated and is now part of the Stone Harbor Condominiums.

Continue north to Bradford Street and turn right.

1 Bradford Street, J. Howard Manchester's Store / Bristol Phoenix Building, ca. 1854 , with later additions. Mr. Manchester was a contractor in plumbing and tin roofs. This large 21⁄2 story Greek Revival building has housed our local newspaper, the Bristol Phoenix (established 1837) as early as 1894 and continually since 1928.

Continue on Bradford Street towards Hope Street then turn right (south) on Hope S

570 Hope Street, Colt Memorial School, 1906-1908, 1913 . Built of Georgian marble, with window units cast of solid bronze. The columns on this American Renaissance edifice were each carved from a solid block of marble. The school was given to the Town by Samuel Pomeroy Colt as a memorial to his mother, Theodora G. (DeWolf) Colt. All the homes on the site of the school were moved to other locations in the downtown.

11.

525 Hope Street, Rogers Free Library, 1877 . This Richardsonian Romanesque Revival library was designed for Maria (DeWolf) Rogers, and built as a memorial to her late husband Robert Rogers, a banker and collector of books. The library burned in July, 1957, and was re- designed in 1959 by local architect, Wallis E. Howe. The new addition onthe north was added in 2008, housing most of the library's collections. A portrait of Maria (DeWolf) Rogers can be seen inside.

12.

515 Hope Street, Bristol Post Office, 1962 . The Post Office includes exterior woodwork and windows salvaged from the Bosworth / Wardwell House built in 1815, which previously stood on this site. Step into the lobby and notice the beautiful Federal design of the transom over the front door.

13.

500 Hope Street, Linden Place, 1810 . This ante-bellum Georgian mansion was designed by Russell Warren and built for George DeWolf, at a cost of $60,000. DeWolf went bankrupt in December 1825 and fled Bristol with his family to one of his Cuban plantations. His financial collapse threw the town of Bristol into a depression which lasted into the 1840's. This site is owned and operated as a house museum by the Friends of Linden Place, providing a glimpse into Bristol's history. Walking tours with a focus on the DeWolf family and their trade are given on an on- going basis. www.lindenplace.org or call 253-0390

14.

474 Hope Street, Bradford- Diman-Norris House, 1792 / ca. 1810 , moved back from street 1845. This Federal house replaced an earlier Colonial house, burned by the British on Sunday May 25, 1778. During ownership by the Norris family, Russell Warren was hired to make renovations, including extending the house one bay to the north, adding a third floor, Chinese Chippendale style balustrades and front porch with Ionic columns.

86 State Street, William Van Doorn / Russell Warren House 1807-11 . This Federal house and the one at 92 State Street were both designed and built by Russell Warren. Warren purchased the house in 1813 and lived there until he moved to Providence in 1823.

16.

92 State Street, Russell Warren House 1810 . Housewright turned professional architect, Warren, purchased this lot in 1807 and designed this Federal house with hip roof for himself. In 1813 Warren moved to the house next door, 86 State Street.

17.

102 State Street, referred to as the "Van Doorn" House, before 1800 . The house is actually two houses that were moved here and framed together. Through research it is believed that the first house was moved about 1832 and the second house by 1835. Back then, materials were very expensive and labor was cheap, so houses were moved rather than torn down.

Turn left onto High Street, where the tour will go one block and return on the other side of the street.

Turn left onto High Street, where the tour will go one block and return on the other side of the street.

281 High Street, James DeWolf's Stone Barn/ Guiteras House, 1824 / ca. 1850 . Originally built as a barn, it was converted into a residence by son William Henry DeWolf, who hired architect Russell Warren to do the work around 1850. Notice the dressed granite blocks used to fill in the large original door bay, to make a new recessed front entrance. Today it serves as the parish house of the Congregational Church.

19.

291 High Street, William H. DeWolf / Ramon Guiteras House, ca. 1830 / ca. 1887 . Originally a 2 1⁄2 story, Greek Revival residence, transformed into a Stick, or Eastlake style, residence with addition of tower and stuccoed exterior, in the latter 1880's.

20.

300 High Street, First Congregational Church, 1856 / 1869 / 1961 . Mid-Victorian, Gothic Revival church and the congregation's third church building, dating to 1856. The earlier buildings were at other locations in Bristol. This is the Town's oldest religious denomination organized around 1680, and is the oldest Congregational Church in Rhode Island.

On your left is the Bristol Town Common, part of the original 1680 layout of the town. On the far side of the Common you can see Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 1911, 330 Wood Street. This buff brick and limestone Gothic Revival church was built to serve Bristol's Irish and French Canadian population.

250 High Street, First Baptist Church, 1814 et seq. Also known as the "Stone Chapel," this two-story gable-roofed Federal church is the oldest surviving church building in Bristol. The original spire was blown off in the Gale of 1869 and never replaced. Gothic compound windows were installed in 1882. This congregation was formed in 1811. The doors were unlocked in the early days so the bell could sound the alarm when there were fires in town.

22.

240 High Street, Bristol County Statehouse / Courthouse 1816-1817, 1836, 1934-35 . This Federal stone (faced with brick and subsequently stuccoed) building was erected as one of five buildings in each of the five Rhode Island counties in which the State's General Assembly meetings were rotated until 1852. It also served as a Courthouse until the early 1980's. This was the site of Bristol's first Meeting House in 1684. Purchased from the State of Rhode Island in the 1990's it is operated by the non-profit Bristol Statehouse Foundation.

At that time the rear jail block was added and the building served as the Town Jail until 1957. The Historical Society, organized in 1936, campaigned to save the building from demolition in the late 1950’s and rented it until 1975 when it was purchased from the State. The building houses the Society’s museum exhibits spanning Bristol’s three hundred plus years of history. Cheddar Gorge

cheddar gorge bristol

Cheese and nature lovers unite and make your way to Cheddar Gorge! At 137m (449ft) deep and 4.8km (2.98 miles) long, Cheddar Gorge is the largest gorge in England. This is also the place where Cheddar Man, the oldest complete human skeleton in Britain was found. Two records in one!

Glastonbury Tor Walk

glastonbury tor walk

Free day trips from Bristol can provide breathtaking views and a full day’s entertainment without splashing any cash. The Glastonbury Tor Walk, for example, is one of the best hikes in Somerset, and that’s saying something! This popular walk takes you from the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey to the summit of Glastonbury Tor.

The circular walk is around 2 miles and there is a fairly moderate climb to the top of the hill. At the top you’ll find St Michael’s Tower, an old 15th century church tower with some of the best views of England.

One of the best bits about this walk is you’ll end up in Glastonbury itself. That means you can finish off your walk with a pub lunch or afternoon tea.

bristol day trips

With its gorgeous 18 th century Georgian architecture, Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage City, in fact the only one in the UK. Located just 13 miles away, Bath is very easy to get to from Bristol. What makes this day trip even better is that there are great public transport connections between the two cities and it is very easy exploring Bath on foot, so you don’t need a car for this one.

The Roman Baths are of course a key place to visit, however Bath offers so much more. While you’re here, take a stroll through Queens Square, enjoy the architecture of the houses in Circus and Royal Crescent areas, visit the Bath Abbey and enjoy the views at Pulteney Weir.

One of the best ways of experience Bath is on a walking tour of the city . On a tour like this you’ll see all the top sites – this tour also includes entry into the Roman Baths afterwards too which is a bonus.

Arlington Row, Bibury in the Cotswolds

Have you been picturing yourself tiptoeing down cobbled streets, surrounded by quaint stone houses with thatched roofs? Or perhaps taking cream teas by the river? Then the Cotswolds are the villages near Bristol to visit for you.

Located 55 miles north-east of Bristol, the Cotswolds are made up of many villages and towns, each seemingly more gorgeous that the last! But where to start?

With a small river running through the centre, boutique shopping and cream teas a plenty, Burton-On-Water is a great pick. For quintessential cobbled streets, stone houses, thatched roofs, and English pubs, make your way to Castle Comb. Go to Stow-on-the-Wold for tea rooms, manors and museums, or Tetbury for a round of antiquing. You can discover the best villages in the Cotswolds in our blog post here.

Llanddwyn Island, Anglesey

llanddwyn island wales

Llanddwyn Island isn’t quite an island – it’s just about attached to the mainland – but it does offer some of the best views of the stunning North Wales coastline.

One of the highlights here is the Tŵr Mawr lighthouse (that’s ‘Great Tower lighthouse’ in English). This is an old lighthouse that dates back to 1845 and it’s become one of the most photogenic spots in Wales.

It’s also the perfect place to spot some wildlife. Seals are often seen relaxing in the sun on the rocks below. Also, if you’re lucky, you can see dolphins and occasionally minke whales in the area too. This is genuinely one of my favourite spots in Wales. If you get here on a hot and sunny day it definitely does not feel like you’re in the UK at all!

Weston-Super-Mare

weston super mare

Just 18 miles south-west of Bristol, and conveniently connected by public transport, sits the Victorian seaside town of Weston-Super-Mare. Providing long stretches of beach, ice cream stands and donkey rides, a day trip here should be on your list of what to do near Bristol. Especially during the summer when it is a real holiday hotspot.

The town itself also offers plenty to keep you entertained. For example, visiting The Bishop’s Palace and Gardens which is complete with moat and drawbridge. Or visiting The Grand Pier, an indoor amusement park set over the water, great for families on rainy days.

Wookey Hole

fun day trips from bristol

Looking for fun day trips from Bristol for families? Then come and explore the world from underground at Wookey Hole . Wookey Hole’s main attraction is a system of underground caves. In fact, they are the largest show caves in England!

Now lit up and equipped with walking paths, this system of caves was once home to cavemen thousands of years ago. More than just caves, admission includes access to mini golf, mirror mazes and a fairy garden. You can also walk through the valley of dinosaurs, play on vintage penny arcade machines and enjoy indoor and outdoor play areas. As I said, this is such a great place for families – all you big kids will love it too.

day tours from bristol

The city of Salisbury, on the south eastern side of Wiltshire is steeped with history. In fact, the Salisbury Cathedral is home to one of the original Magna Cartas! The medieval cathedral itself is the place of pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands each year, and it has the tallest spire in Britain.

Be sure to take some time wandering the streets and admiring the buildings that have stood here for hundreds of years. Including a stroll through the High Street Gate, built in the early 1300s and was once used to lock up convicted criminals. Then head over to 700-year-old The Haunch of Venison for a spot of lunch that will delight your taste buds.

Tintern Abbey

villages near bristol to visit

Just over the border in Wales on the banks of the River Wye sits the Tintern Abbey. This majestic ruin was founded in 1131 by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow for Cistercian monks.

In 1537 the abbey was dissolved and has since been left to nature’s forces. Though roofless, the walls are standing and you can still spot many distinctive features of this Early English to Decorated Gothic style structure.

Take a guided history tour, wander through the surrounding countryside and enjoy refreshments at the on-site cafe.

Self-Guided Banksy Walking Tour in Bristol: Where to See 10 Original Banksy Art

Banksy Walking Tour in Bristol - You don’t need planning permission to build castles in the sky - Lower Lamb St

From the “Well-hung Lover” to “The Girl with the Pierced Eardrum”, this Banksy walking tour in Bristol takes you to all surviving Banksy art in his hometown.

As the hometown of world-famous street artist Banksy, no trip to Bristol would be complete without seeing some of his original work. Born in Bristol in 1974 and known for his thought-provoking street art, Banksy perfected his art and style on these streets. Luckily, you can still see some of his very early works scattered around the city.

I love the experience of exploring a city on foot and hunting for around for street art. This is something I’m used since I grew up in Melbourne which has loads of street art . While for most people this street art and Bristol history tour is enough to see a few of his more centrepieces, my self-guided Banksy walking tour will take you to all of his surviving pieces in the city. A must-see for all Banksy enthusiasts. While I do recommend joining popular this tour I still suggest you use this guide to see more of Banksy’s work. This Banksy itinerary not only takes you to his more famous pieces, you’ll also see Banksy’s earlier and rare pieces which really highlight his development as an artist.

Here are 10 original Banksy artworks you can see around Bristol.

1. Well-hung Lover – Frogmore St

Banksy Walking Tour in Bristol - Well-hung Lover Frogmore Street Bristol

In order to create this piece, Banksy arranged for enclosed scaffolding to be placed up against the wall so he could work without being seen. A few days later, he ordered the scaffolding company to remove the scaffolding to reveal this remarkable piece.

What’s also impressive is the attention to detail. Notice how the window is in the same style and size as those on surrounding buildings. Bravo, Banksy. Bravo!

Located directly opposite Bristol City Council on Frogmore St, Bristol BS1, UK, United Kingdom.

3. Paint Pot Angel – Bristol Museum and Art Gallery

Banksy Walking Tour in Bristol - Paint Pot Angel Bristol Museum and Art Gallery

In 2009, Banksy held a hugely successful homecoming when under complete confidentiality, he took over Bristol Museum and Art Gallery for an exhibition called “Banksy versus Bristol”.

Banksy paid Bristol City Council £1 to hire the museum for his event which generated tens of millions of pounds for the local economy.  Record numbers turned out and queued for hours to see his work. One of those pieces was the Paint Pot Angel, which is now on permanent exhibition here. Although, when I visited, it was on loan in Denmark.

The statue depicts an angel with a pot of bright pink paint dripping down over the head of a traditional-looking sandstone angel.

Opening times

Bristol Museum and Art Gallery is open Tuesday-Sunday 10am- 5pm. Closed Monday.

Located in the foyer of Bristol Museum & Art Gallery on Queens Rd, Bristol BS8 1RL, United Kingdom.

6 and 7. Grim Reaper and Tesco Petrol Bomb – M Shed

Banksy Walking Tour in Bristol - Grim Reaper M Shed

With exposure to the elements, the artwork became increasingly damaged and his tag completely disappeared. A decision was made to cut out the Grim Reaper and place it on display at M Shed where it is on long-term loan.

Banksy Walking Tour in Bristol - Tesco Petrol Bomb M Shed

To commemorate the riots, Banksy created a commemorative souvenir poster for £5. The proceeds from each sale going to a social enterprise, the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft (PRSC).

M Shed is open Tuesday-Sunday 10am – 5pm. Closed Monday.

The Grim Reaper is located on the first floor in M Shed above the cafe.

With the Grim Reaper behind you, head into the exhibition area. The Tesco Petrol Bomb poster can be found in a glass cabinet in the protest area to your right.

10. Blowpop Records – Cave St, Portland Square

Banksy Walking Tour in Bristol - Blowpop Records Cave Street

Blowpop was a very cool club night and record label which was formed by Bristol DJ John Stapleton (aka Dr Jam). Banksy hand-stencilled the matador image onto the covers of the first 100 copies of a limited edition Blowpop release.

Located behind security fencing on Cave St, Portland Square, Bristol BS2 8RG, United Kingdom.

That’s it! Originally there were more Banksy pieces around the city, but all of them survived vandalism. If you visit Bristol and notice that one of these pieces is no longer in good condition, please let me know so that I can update this guide for others. Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo criticises 'mess' at bottom of the Premier League

James Hilsum

Updated 11/04/2024 at 17:57 GMT

Nuno Espirito Santo had his say on the state of flux at the bottom of the Premier League, with both Nottingham Forest and Everton hampered by points deductions for breaching profit and sustainability (PSR) rules. The Portuguese insisted that clarity must come soon to prevent further confusion, as the season reaches its climax. Forest are in next action against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
