This is the moment a baby monkey hugged its mum as the primate attempted to destroy a family car at a Wiltshire safari park.

Footage shows the brazen animal sitting on the bonnet ripping apart the car's windscreen washers as the infant clings on.

Mum-of-three Charlotte Wilson, 38, had treated her family to a trip to Longleat Safari Park in Warminster during the Bank Holiday weekend.

The family were driving through the tourist attraction at around midday when a family of monkeys jumped onto their car.

Charlotte grabbed her phone to record the ambush while telling her husband to squirt the windscreen wipers in a bid to get them off the vehicle.

But rather than be frightened off the cheeky monkeys decided to drink from washers before deciding to tear them from the car.

Teacher Charlotte, from Swindon, said: "The funny this was we were moaning about how the monkeys weren't paying us any attention. Then all of a sudden a whole gang of them climbed on top of the car.

"They were there for about 15 minutes and that gave them enough time to try and rip the car apart.

"There were so many people in front we were just driving at a snail's pace so the only thing we could do was put the windscreen washers on.

"They must have been thirsty as it didn't get them away, they just tried to drink it. Also I'd like to point out it was just water in there. There wasn't any screenwash so it's not a case of us trying to poison them.

"They actually managed to dislodge the piping while they were pulling on it. Luckily my husband works in the car trade so we were able to fix it pretty quick."

The footage was taken August 30 2021.

To be worried about the drive through safari?

slipperandleggings · 14/08/2021 13:48

Anyone been? Do the animals really wreck your car? Kids are begging to go but I'm worried about loosing a mirror! I know we can walk a different route but they really want to drive... just risk assessing before booking!

We’ve been a few times and always go in our second car that we don’t care as ouch about, just in case. We’ve never had any damage and not seen other cars getting damaged when we were there either. However, there are enough people who have had damage and videos out there if it, to show that it does happen. So go prepared for a windscreen wiper, trim or wing mirror to be removed

We have done it loads of times with no issues. The monkeys have a bit of a reputation for car damage, but at our local one you can skip their section. We usually do it and while we have had them sitting on the car, they haven't damaged it in anyway.

We've done the one at Woburn numerous times over the years. Best experience was when a bear cub bit the caravan tow bar on my Dads car. Dad was fuming but we thought it was hilarious! In all seriousness, the cars I've seen with bad damage (ie windscreen wipers pulled off) are normally the cars that belong to the idiots who try and feed crisps etc out the windows. The monkey enclosure is usually the problematic one and you can skip that at Woburn if you want.

We've never had any damage. Most of the time the animals haven't been anywhere near us, it's always been quite underwhelming. My dad would never drive through a safari park when we were kids in case a monkey stole his custon-built aerial.

My friends went recently and the monkeys stole their number plate. 🤣 that has put us off going.

The Longleat ones are vandals!! This is one on our wing mirror with the aerial of the car in front. Several of them were at it......

If you are thinking of Longleat, the monkeys will definitely try and wreck your car. Remove your aerial beforehand or you can skip the monkey bit.

We go to Knowsley. I won’t drive my car through the monkeys but you can go through on a minibus if you want or on the safe route you can pull up and watch other cars being ruined the monkeys

We went to Longleat couple of weeks ago and had no issues with the monkeys… however the guy in the mondeo behind us wasn’t so lucky and he did not look best pleased!

Yes they’ll damage your car. At longleat we saw them ripping all the trims off, brand badges, all sorts. We went through in our old car but I wouldn’t do it with our new one.

Depends on which safari I guess. We’ve just been to West Midlands safari park which was fab. No monkeys to wrench your car but lots of animals that come close.

We did Longleat. The monkeys fortunately left our car well alone, much to my kids' disappointment (I think watching a monkey poo on the sunroof would have made my son's whole year) but the car in front lost an aerial and rear wiper blade.

The monkeys at Longleat are pros! We had teethmarks on rubber bits of our old car (which we knew we'd be replacing). There is a detour around that part of the safari for people that don't want to replace their plastic trim/number plates/windscreen wipers. If you start driving the monkeys will normally jump off. You could pull up and watch people getting their cars wrecked (a pair of binoculars might help). You can also pay a little extra to be driven round in a bus.

Grin

We went to longleat last week, had a monkey sitting on the roof of our car for a while but no damage done. We saw a campervan get quite a bit of attention though, and any additions to cars seemed to make them interested so bike racks etc are a bad idea. It was brilliant fun watching them though, I highly recommend it!

We skipped the monkeys at longleat for this reason - we went years ago in a much crapper car that we didn't mind getting ruined but this time our car is a bit nicer so DH got a bit twitchy. There's also another enclosure where you can feed the animals through the window and that one warns they may damage the car so we skipped that one too. The rest of the animals we saw couldn't have been less interested in the cars - they were either asleep or as far away from the road as they could possibly get.

There is an escape lane if you want to do the rest of the drive through at longleat. They will try and wreck your car - took of our rear wiper and the camper van in front of us had loads of bits taken off.

The little shits at Knowsley once stole my nozzle where the screen wash comes out off the bonnet. Yanked all the tubing out too. One of them then promptly shit on my bonnet then they all left. Kids found it hilarious though

Use a detour to avoid the monkey section and the rest should probably be fine.

The Longleat ones are vandals. I lost a car aerial, washer jets and they were making a bid for my small side indicators so I opened the window and pushed the monkey off before the damage got worse.

We did Longleat yesterday. They are vandals! It can’t be good for them either. We watched one take the parking sensor off the car in front and eat bits off it. I wouldn’t do that but again. We avoided the deer bit too as they can damage cars. And we get deer in our garden who damage trees as it is!

You can definitely skip the monkey section at Longleat. When I was little, we went through the monkey section in Dad’s company car (he wasn’t too bothered if the car was damaged as he wouldn’t be paying for it!). They pulled out the majority of the rubber from around the windscreen. Dad took it to the garage to be fixed and said to the mechanic,”You’ll never guess how that happened!” The guy replied “Monkey at Longleat?” Apparently it was a very common thing!

As long as they don't have monkeys you'll probably be ok! If there's monkeys it's anyone guess they can be very naughty

Don't they still have the Safari buses?

Don't drive through the monkey enclosure

We took the bus. A lot of cars were damaged. Dont risk the monkey enclosure. The bus was very good and the driver very knowledgeable and funny. Well worth the £5 fare.

I have mixed feelings after our family day out at Longleat yesterday, mainly due to it being very busy and involving lots of queues. I appreciate I went on a lovely sunny August day and it would be much quieter, and probably nicer out of season, but we thought we had got there relatively early ( 10.30am, after a long drive from London), and that we may avoid the worst of the crowds, but we were wrong. Despite buying our tickets online beforehand, we still had to join the same queue as anyone who had just turned up on the day and waited 20 minutes just to get in the gate as a result. Then a short queue to show our tickets as we drove into the drive through part, and then gridlock once we reached the African village, which just seemed to be caused by numerous cars finding parking spaces. We'd hoped to stop to feed the giraffes but no chance of that due to the swarms of people. So swiftly on to the next drive through part; which went smoothly until the notorious monkeys. We only have ourselves to blame as the warnings are clear, but try telling that to your excited children whilst naively imagining it will only happen to someone else. We had a lovely fellow hitch a ride on our bonnet, but it turns out he was just the distractor whilst the rest of his gang made light work of our parking sensors. We were only alerted to this when we saw the people I the next car laughing at us- call me a kill joy but I'm still struggling to see the funny side of a £350 repair bill! On talking to people later in the day who had had similar experiences, it seems that parking sensors are the monkeys current item of choice. I know they are inquisitive but I do wonder if there is an element of boredom. It may be a different breed but the ones we encountered at Woburn last year had a nicer looking tree clad enclosure and seemed happier swinging around and playing than dismantling cars. Enjoyed the close up encounter with a camel, and then feeding the deer which were a real highlight. The tigers were distant, but that's fine because they are not there to entertain us. But then the lions which was probably the low point of the day ( even after our costly monkey experience!). Essentially, more people were being let into the rather small enclosure than were being let out, which led to a complete gridlock in both lanes for more than half an hour. After our long journey and the queues we had already endured, this was almost unbearable. This soon became a quest not to try and see the lions but to get out of the enclosure as soon as possible. No wonder they had a car over heat and catch fire in there last year. if there was a cheetah in the next part we certainly weren't hanging around to see it as we just wanted to get out of the drive through by then. Apart from the monkeys, there are no alternative routes that I could see, and everyone ends up jammed in, which certainly isn't my ide of fun. Anyway, after we finally managed to escape, another high of the day; the beautiful grounds of Longleat. We had a picnic lunch overlooking the house and lake away from the crowds and it was truly lovely. Next, to the main square, which was a mixed experience. There's undeniably lots to do and the kids loved it, but when you enter the square itself you are greeted by a scene of rather tacky mass consumerism, souvenir shops encouraging you to buy at every corner and fast food places Just what you'd expect from any theme park really, but somehow I hadn't imagined that Longleat would be like a theme park, especially as this stood side by side with the beautiful stately home. Anyway, as said, there is lots to do, including the river cruise, which really was worth the wait, and the adventure playground which was excellent, to name but a few. All in all, we had a fun and varied day but it wasn't the relaxing experience I was expecting. On the way out at about 6pm we saw the last few cars doing the last circuit of the drive through and it looked so much more pleasurable at this time. Oh how we wish we hadn't followed the masses (and much of the advice on TA) on doing the safari first, and instead waited to the end. By comparison we went to Woburn this time last year and loved it. Quite different experiences, with Woburn having less " other attractions" and those there are being quite low key and old fashioned, but all the more charming for it. We also found it to be much less crowded and more enjoyable for it, but I can appreciate how many people ( too many on the day we visited) love the sheer variety that Longleat ha to offer.

Good for family holiday especially with young children. We will recommend to friends. We arrived at afternoon, I advise yo go there early then you won't miss a lot of activities.

We've been - but we won't be going back. £120 for a family of 4. There were some small online discounts that would have taken this to £101 but would have tied us to a specific day. We started off with the safari - this was a mistake. I would do this as late in the day as you dare. It was heaving busy. Just one big traffic jam and it took 45 minutes just to get through one of the lion pens. Children near meltdown by this point and one of them desperate for the loo!! Monkeys were great. Climbed all over the car, and yes, they did pull bits off it - but worth it because they were so cute!!! You can bypass the monkey drive through if you have a nicer car than us! Then we opted to feed the deer - don't bother!! They really weren't at all hungry at this point and it was just another traffic jam and I now have a pot of deer food in my car waiting for....I have no idea what! We fed the giraffes. You pay extra for this. Yep, I'd probably do this again, even though it didn't last long because you do get amazingly close to them. If you do it with children (or other nervous adults) hold onto the branch with them, otherwise the giraffe just nicks the whole thing in less than half a second! Then the main square. Lots of restaurants and lots more queues. Lovely ice cream. Children's adventure play area excellent. Really good. There is a 'splash pad' area which sadly we didn't know about so weren't prepared. So I would take swimming costumes and towels for children, just in case. Then there are more animals and you can get quite close - meerkat walk through and penguin walk through, and ray pool where you can touch the fish. Deadly 60 experience - might have been good, I have no idea because I really couldn't face queuing for anything else by this time! Overall the animals all seemed content (in as much as I could tell), they had large spacious enclosures and there seemed to be some good enrichment stuff going on. So altogether the attractions were good. But the price is very hard to justify, and the queues for EVERYTHING were so horrific that they made me want to cry.

I've been to Longleat multiple times and have always really enjoyed it, until yesterday. We made our way to the safari around midday - after stopping for toilet breaks for little ones, topping up refreshments and checking out the giraffes. Big mistake. I felt a bit like I've paid £30 to sit in the longest traffic jam, on one of the hottest days of the year, with no option of opening the window. Thank God for air con! The two lane system always seemed to work well in long leat, but both lanes became backed up by people spending 20 minutes taking pictures of a barely visible animal (they were mostly hiding because of the heat!). This meant that everyone was stuck, no way out, little ones eventually needing the toilet again, no fresh air - how anyone survived without air con I'll never know! - surely the keepers should be doing something to stop people stopping for long periods in what is technically the "passing lane"? I know its peak time, summer, midday - but its a real health and safety issue to have that many people trapped in the heat. If it were on the motorway the police would have been giving out water! I plan to return on a less busy day as I felt like I didn't get anything from my experience yesterday. It is a fantastic zoo, but parents be warned.

We visited the safari and park with our toddler and we all had a brilliant time! We had a 2 days pass, and still missed some attractions, so would recommend to go with plenty of time.

American tourist killed after elephant rammed truck on African safari seen smiling in photos before attack

T he American tourist killed by a charging bull elephant that flipped over their safari vehicle in Zambia over the weekend has been identified as an adventurous 79-year-old woman who wanted the trip to be her “last big adventure.”

Mattson, who was visiting from Minnesota, was pictured the day she was killed on the safari vehicle holding a flower, her grieving family told KSTP.

She was one of six tourists with the group Wilderness Zambia who were out on a game drive Saturday in Kafue National Park when they came under attack by the incensed animal.

Terrifying video footage shows the elephant chasing after the safari vehicle moments before it charged the group, tipping the truck over as the guide repeatedly yelled at the creature.

The passenger continues to record as the elephant flips the vehicle over.

Family told the outlet that the US Embassy contacted them about her death.

Loved ones described the 79-year-old as kind, adventurous and very active in her community.

“She had told us that this safari was going to be her last big adventure,” said  her friend  John Longabauth. “Because her birthday is in the summer — I think she was going to be 80, and she felt like she would start slowing down. To be honest, I don’t know if she’d slow down or not. But at least you wouldn’t be traveling as far, probably.”

Mattson split time between living in Minnesota and Arizona, her family said.

Her friends in Arizona held a memorial for her following her sudden death.

According to the Safari company, one other guest was hurt and taken to a private medical facility.

The four other tourists on the trip were treated for minor injuries after the violent outburst.

The horrifying incident unfolded at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday during a game drive through Kafue National Park, Wilderness Zambia CEO Keith Vincent said in a statement.

Kafue National Park’s management sent a helicopter to evacuate the victims.

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died. We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident,” Vincent said.

The group of tourists had been staying at the luxurious Lufupa Camp in the Kafue National Park, the largest game reserve in Africa.

The tour group is making arrangements for Mattson’s body to be returned to the US.

Police and other authorities are investigating the incident.

American woman, 79, killed during African safari after elephant charges truck

A Minnesota woman died after her tour vehicle was charged by an elephant during a safari in Africa.

Gail Mattson, who was 79, was on safari at Kafue National Park in western Zambia on March 30 when a bull elephant approached her tour group’s truck, which was carrying six tourists and a guide.

Gail Mattson

The elephant ran toward the truck and flipped it over, as seen in a video shared on social media that appears to show the incident.

Mattson’s daughter, Rona Wells, confirmed that her mother passed away while on safari, writing in an April 2 Facebook post that her mom “lost her life in a tragic accident while on her dream adventure.”

The tour company that operated Mattson’s tour, Wilderness, confirmed in an April 2 press release that an American tourist died after a tour vehicle was “unexpectedly charged” by an “aggressive bull elephant.’

“Our guides are extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” Keith Vincent, the CEO of Wilderness, said in a statement.

Another female tourist was injured in the incident, and four other guests received treatment for minor injuries, according to Wilderness.

The tour company also said in a statement that Mattson’s body would be repatriated to the United States with help from Zambian authorities and the U.S. embassy in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital.

This incident came after another situation involving an aggressive elephant occurred in South Africa’s Pilanesberg National Park last month.

In a video captured by a tourist that appears to show the moment, the elephant can be seen charging a safari tour truck and lifting it with its tusks. No one was hurt in that incident.

These types of frightening run-ins with wildlife are quite rare during safaris, Marlon du Toit, a professional safari guide and wildlife photographer, told NBC News.

Commenting on the fatal incident in Zambia, du Toit said “it’s extremely rare to see an elephant that irate react so aggressively.”

“I’ve been doing this for 20 years and I’ve never had an encounter as aggressive (as) that with elephants,” he added.

He also told NBC News that he had worked with the tour company involved in the Zambia incident for years, and called them one of the best in Africa.

“Across Africa, there are thousands and thousands  of guests on safari on a daily basis, with no negative consequences,” he said.

Moscow Metro Crash , 10 dead

At least ten people have been killed and 120 people injured after three metro cars derailed near Moscow’s Slavyansky Bulvar station Tuesday morning.  Deputy Mayor Pyotr Biryukov said 149 people had been injured, 106 of whom were hospitalized, news agency Interfax reported.

The derailment took place at about 8:35 a.m. between the Slavyansky Bulvar and Park Pobedy metro stations on the city’s Blue Line, a statement on the Moscow Metro website said.

Slavyansky Bulvar metro station has been temporarily closed as rescuers attend to the victims.

The crash is believed to have been caused by a decrease in the electric voltage running through the tracks of the metro, a spokesman for Moscow’s Emergency Situations Ministry said, Interfax reported.

In total, 200 people have been evacuated from the tunnel, Interfax quoted a representative of the Emergency Situations Ministry as telling local television broadcaster Moscow 24.

Preliminary reports suggested a number of passengers were still trapped inside one of the damaged cars.
