Buenos Aires is full of nightlife, tango, asado, dulce de leche, Malbec, and even a little mystery. That’s right, mystery. Buenos Aires has tunnels running underneath the city which were covered up and forgotten about until 1995, totally by accident. The tour of the el Zanjón de Granados in the San Telmo neighborhood in Buenos Aires is one of the best tours out there, a tour I highly recommend.

Basic Information about el Zanjón de Granados

El Zanjón: 12pm, 4pm (50 minutes)

Optional Casa Minima Tour: 1pm (40 minutes)

The tour guide spoke exceptional English and was extremely knowledgeable about topics both about the Zanjón and the history of Argentina. You need to arrive at least 20 minutes before the start of the tour time to purchase your tickets.

You can combine your visit to the Zanjón with a visit to La Casa Minima, which is just around the corner, for an additional price. The Casa Minima is the thinnest building in the city, and belonged to a previously enslaved person.

What can I expect to see during the tour of El Zanjón de Granados?

The tour will begin on the main floor where the tour guide shows a short slideshow presentation, explaining the origins of the building, and how the excavations began. The guide will point out peculiarities and details about the building, and the way the original building was constructed.

The tour then proceeds to the lower floors. You will learn about the history of tango in Buenos Aires, and hear more stories about this house and structure. You will have the chance to see several old photographs and fragments of pottery and find things at the site.

Keep going down, and you’ll walk through several tunnels underground, and be told more stories about Buenos Aires and the formation of these tunnels.

At the end, you will be lead towards the exit (not the same place as the entrance), as the guide explains the building’s current functions. An A+ tour!

History of el Zanjón de Granados Tunnels in Buenos Aires

In 1995, a man named Don Jorge purchased the location where the Zanjón museum currently sits. The outside was crumbling and covered in graffiti; he never saw the inside of the building until after he purchased it. He had plans of creating both a restaurant and a parking garage with this massive space. Don Jorge grew up in San Telmo and dreamed of owning a business in his childhood neighborhood.

Once renovations began on the building, the workers discovered at the back of the building, a hole under the slanting floor. They immediately called in Don Jorge, who went down into that hole and found the start of a tunnel. However, the hole was filled with old trash and debris. He connected with the archaeological team from a local university who then began working. They began to discover more tunnels, fountains, and walls.

The history of the home then began to reveal itself. The original house in this location was built in the 1700s by a very rich family. They eventually made the decision to move to the countryside, as the sewage situation began to worsen in the city. They renovated their home and fashioned it into a tenement home for newly arriving immigrants.

It was eventually closed down, and then closed in on itself until 1995.

I don’t want to give away too many more details because the tour will cover this and so much more.

El Zanjón de Granados Tunnels in the Present

Don Jorge’s renovation of the building and the underground tunnels was all self-funded. Occasionally, Don Jorge leads the tours himself, though they tend to go much longer than the 50 minutes, as he tells several stories of the building’s discoveries. Unselfishly, Don Jorge decided to maintain this building as a museum, as a way to preserve the history of his city and his neighborhood, rather than turning it into a restaurant.

Part archaeological museum, part event space, El Zanjón is a beautifully restored residence encapsulating three centuries of urban living. Traces from an earlier patrician home—an open-air cistern, a lookout tower and a 1740s wall comprised of seashell mortaring—serve to transport you to the era of Spanish settlement.

One of the more unique places in Buenos Aires is this amazing architectural site. Below the remains of a mansion, a series of old tunnels, sewers and water wells going back to 1730 were discovered. They have been meticulously reconstructed brick by brick, and very attractively lit, and this ‘museum’ offers a fascinating glimpse into the city's architectural past. Choose between hour-long tours during the week or half-hour tours on Sundays. It's best to call and reserve, especially if you need English-speaking guides.

Descripción del tour

Nos encontraremos en la esquina de Calle Defensa y Av. Belgrano en el Convento de Santo Domingo les contaré sobre las invasiones inglesas y porque este convento es tan importante en nuestra hostoria. desde allí caminaremos hasta la estatua de Mafalda y si la cola no es muy larga nos tomaremos la famosa foto.  La siguiente parada es “la casa mínima”, que es la casa museo más pequeña de Buenos Aires, no sin antes detenernos en el Zanjón de Granados, otro museo donde se pueden recorrer los túneles subterráneos de San Telmo. Desde allí pasaremos por el bar de tango “el viejo Almacen”. Les brindaré información sobre el tango no solo sobre shows de tango sino un poco de su historia y las míticas milongas porteñas. Así como también podremos ver el bar sur, tradicional rincón de tango.  Echaremos un vistazo a la impresionante “Facultad de Ingeniería” para luego retomar la calle Defensa y subir hasta el “Mercado de San Telmo”. En el mercado veremos los diferentes puestos. Te daré algo de tiempo para que mires y tal vez compres algo.  Luego llegaremos a la famosa plaza donde también nos tomaremos un tiempo para ver el mercado y, tal vez, si tenemos la suerte, podremos ver bailar tango.  Nos detendremos para ver la hermosa Iglesia San Pedro Telmo y Museo Penitenciario (antigua Cárcel de Mujeres). Casi al final de nuestro recorrido les enseñaré dos Museos más que pueden ser visitados en San Telmo, El Museo de Arte Moderno Y el Museo Histórico Nacional. Y ya finalmente la ultima parada será la "Casa Ezeiza", la famosa "casa chorizo" , museo a cielo abierto donde podrás explorar antigüedades, mientras comparto con ustedes la Historia de la inmigración europea en Argentina durante los siglos XIX y XX.   Mi objetivo es que no sólo te lo pases genial paseando por este increíble barrio sino que también te sientas libre de hacer cualquier pregunta sobre la ciudad, qué hacer, dónde comprar y la vida nocturna. Interesante propuesta rescatar esta historia de Buenos Aires de hace ya 2 siglos es muy importente, Paseo con Gui muy completa y didactica, Muy buena conservacion.

Recomiendo esta visita. Es muy interesante recorrer un pedazo de historia de la Buenos Aires del principio del siglo XX. Pero por sobre todas las cosas es interesante remarcar el esfuerzo de una persona por mantener en pie semejante patrimonio, sobre todo cuando desde el estado muchas veces esto no ocurre. Felicitaciones al Sr Jorge y a su familia por este compromiso asumido.

Importante trabajo de preservación en el interior y debajo de una antigua casona, que permite apreciar la evolución de las distintas construcciones emplazadas sucesivamente en una manzana del barrio de San Telmo.

Hace mucho que me habian recomendado visitar este lugar. Lo fui postergando porque supuse que los comentarios quizas eran exagerados. Pero me equivoque. Es un lugar unico y con rastros de historia de la epoca de la Colonia en Buenos Aires. Los guias son excelentes y el lugar asombroso Son los restos de un zanjon que se utilizaba en la epoca de la Colonia para desagüe de la ciudad. Descubierto por casualidad por un porteño que compro la antigua propiedad para instalar un resto. Al comenzar las obras de refaccion se encontro con un mundo subterraneo desconocido para el. Tuvo la genial idea de explotarlo turisticamente para que todos lo conocieramos

Interesante propuesta turística para conocer un poco de la historia de los inicios de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. Quizá uno no dispone de todo el tiempo que le gustaría para detenerse a observar los diferentes espacios por los que se pasa pero en definitiva uno sale contento y con muy buen sabor de boca

Túneles de Buenos Aires

The Túneles de Buenos Aires or sometimes the Túneles secretos de Buenos Aires (Secret tunnels of Buenos Aires). They are also called the Túneles Manzana de las Luces , after the quarter where they are located, around the Calle Perú. Now and then such a tunnel is revealed, for example in 1912, when the floor of a classroom in the Faculty of Architecture collapsed. But actually the site of today was discovered in 1980. It was at one time completely covered with earth for unknown reasons.

The origin and use of the underground structure is completely unknown. There is only a theory, that they were created by the Jesuits, to connect the buildings of the order underground. It was started but never completed, because the Jesuits were expelled in 1767.

The tunnels are currently closed for renovation until further notice. However, there is a very good virtual tour with 360° panoramas online, see link below.

When you follow the tour you might get the impression that the six sections have different origins or uses. Actually these are just the six most common legends about the tunnels, if you try to link the tunnel with the explanation you will see that there is actually no connection between the underground structures and the stories. We classified the site as enigmatic, as there is actually neither a document not archaeological evidence for any of those theories, and they seem all a little off.

Zanjón de Granados

The Tercero del Sur, known at the time of the city's foundation as Zanjón de Granados, was a stream that ran from today's Plaza Constitución towards the Río de la Plata estuary via Pasaje San Lorenzo.

In the 1980s, the current owner of this site accidentally stumbled across an incredible archaeological find: while working to restore the Italian-style house, whose patios and facades date to the first half of the 20th century, he found the foundations of an 18th century colonial era home, which are now on display and can be visited with a guided tour.
