KUALA LUMPUR, November 9 – Tourism Malaysia is actively participating in the World Travel Market 2023, celebrating its 42nd year of involvement since 1981. The event is taking place at ExCeL London from November 6 to 8, 2023, and Tourism Malaysia is led by YBhg. Dato’ Roslan Tan Sri Abdul Rahman, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Malaysia. The Malaysian delegation comprises 92 participants from 50 organizations, including state tourism boards, tour operators, hotels and resorts, associations, and airlines.

One of the highlights of Malaysia’s presence at the World Travel Market 2023 is the launch of the Sustainable Malaysia Initiative, a collaboration between Tourism Malaysia and the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA). This initiative features a portrait of a Malaysian tiger, painted by British wildlife artist Rachel Gray, which will be auctioned, with the proceeds supporting the Royal Belum State Park’s sustainable tourism initiatives and indigenous communities. Additionally, Syabira Yusoff, the first Malaysian to win The Great British Bake Off, will demonstrate a traditional Malaysian dish at the event.

Tourism Malaysia aims to emphasize its ecotourism and sustainable tourism efforts by showcasing tourism products that highlight the country’s rich biodiversity and local communities. With the United Kingdom as the largest market in Europe for Malaysia’s tourism industry, the UK market has shown significant growth, with 197,794 arrivals from January to September 2023, marking a 150.3% increase compared to the same period in 2022. Malaysia targets 16.1 million international tourist arrivals in 2023 with projected tourism receipts of MYR 49.2 billion.

MATTA COLLABORATES WITH TOURISM MALAYSIA AT THE WORLD TRAVEL MARKET 6 - 8 NOVEMBER 2023, LONDON

tourism malaysia london

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 NOVEMBER 2023 – In collaboration with Tourism Malaysia, MATTA is working with British Artist Rachel Gray, a recognised British artist of wildlife portraiture to launch the ‘Sustainable Malaysia Initiative’ at the Tourism Malaysia Pavilion at the World Travel Market 2023. Rachel Gray will produce one large format of the Malaysian tiger, a recognised endangered species. This portrait, through the use of technology, will be converted to Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT’s), which have an intrinsic value and they will be auctioned for sale at a date to be finalized later in the year. The proceeds from the auction and sale of the Non-Fungible Tokens will go towards supporting sustainable tourism at the Royal Belum State Park in Perak as well as towards sustaining the indigenous communities that live within. With the eyes of the world upon Malaysia for the few days between 6 - 8 November 2023 at the WTM 2023, it is believed that this event provides unique opportunities for branding and merchandizing and will help Malaysia get the word out about eco-tourism and the sustainable activities that go with it.  “Known and loved for our rich biodiversity, especially from the European market, this initiative is hoped to bring further awareness of Malaysia’s ecotourism products and sustainable tourism, apart from supporting the local communities and their conservation efforts. This is also in line with our focus to promote Malaysia as the Top-of-the-Mind Ecotourism Destination of the World,” said YBhg. Dato’ Roslan Tan Sri Abdul Rahman, Secretary General of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia.

Nigel Wong also took the opportunity to thank Malaysia Aviation Group for their support in providing a return ticket to London for Rachel Gray for this important campaign at the WTM London. “The collaboration with Rachel Gray is particularly important as we feel that Rachel’s work tells the perfect story of the beauty of Malaysia’s rich wildlife heritage that we are trying to save and sustain for the benefit of the generations to come but also for us all here and now.” said Nigel Wong, the President of MATTA. “This is also the first collaboration between MATTA and the British artist and we are proud of our close ties and the journey we are taking together towards a more sustainable future.”

ITC Director-General, Dato’ Dr. Mohmed Razip Haji Hasan (far right) speaking at the Halal Economy Conference 2022 moderated by Ms. Saeeda Ahmed, London Halal Expo’s Director of Strategic Partnership (far left)

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, 3 DECEMBER 2022: Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) extended its strategic relations with global Islamic Tourism and Halal industry practitioners at the inaugural Halal Expo London 2022 that took place at Excel London, United Kingdom on 2 and 3 December 2022.

The 2-day affair was a platform for Halal industry stakeholders to grow their target demographic to the trillion ringgit-worth global market with unlimited business potential. The trade show featured multiple sectors serving the faith-based needs of the world’s 1.9 billion Muslim consumers covering the areas of travel and tourism as well as beauty, food and beverage, fashion, sports, and entertainment. It was also an opportunity for decision-makers and heads of enterprises to communicate, discuss and share ideas on collaboration and investment possibilities to further strengthen the Halal industry.

ITC took part in the exhibition to showcase its consultancy products and services in strengthening the Muslim-friendly offerings and branding. The expo was also an opportunity to support awareness towards the growing Muslim consumer market and highlight Malaysia as a Muslim-friendly destination. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between London Halal Expo organiser and ITC to continue the collaboration in the upcoming Halal Expo. ITC’s Director-General, YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Mohmed Razip Haji Hasan and London Halal Expo’s Director of Strategic Partnership, Saeeda Ahmed represented their respective organisations at the signing.

A total of 14 other Malaysian companies also took part to highlight the country’s various Halal offerings to the expo’s international audience. This was in line with Malaysia’s National Recovery Plan to increase the nation’s export potential.

Dato’ Dr. Mohmed Razip was also invited to speak at the conference portion of the expo, the Halal Economy Conference, on the topic l “Clouds Above the Rest: Islamic Tourism Inspires Balance, Transformations and Solutions”. The Director-General shared Malaysia’s experience as the leading Muslim-Friendly destination in catering to the Muslim tourist market and addressed the rising power of the Muslim consumer on the global front and how this would shape the future of businesses, products and services.

“The inclusive nature of Islamic Tourism makes it the sector that connects the different components within the Halal economy that includes pharmaceutical, entertainment, fashion, finance, media and recreation, food and beverage, among others, inspiring a balanced socio-economical growth globally,” informed Dato’ Dr. Mohmed Razip.

Earlier this year, the State of the Global Islamic Economy Report by DinarStandard revealed that the Muslim-Friendly and Hospitality Travel recorded a sum of USD 1.2 billion in travel investment in 2020/2021, signifying its importance. Malaysia’s praiseworthy performance in the area has earned it the Best Muslim-Friendly Destination (OIC) title at the inaugural Halal Travel Awards and the Global Muslim Travel Index 2022 Report by CrescentRating and MasterCard, further cementing its position in the industry.

As the appointed government agency to ensure the development of the Islamic Tourism ecosystem in Malaysia, ITC will continue its agenda to retain Malaysia’s position as the preferred destination of the Muslim tourist market by taking part in international engagement events such as the Halal Expo London 2022. ITC’s participation in the expo was supported by the national flag carrier, Malaysia Airlines, and Tourism Malaysia.

Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) is a Company Limited By Guarantee (CLBG) established under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Malaysia tasked to develop the Islamic tourism segment for Malaysia. It advocates for Muslim-friendly tourism (MFT) by offering research and market intelligence, training, industry development and consultation, Muslim-friendly tourism and hospitality (MFTH) service standards and certification, and information exchange.

In 2021, ITC received two key awards, i.e. Strategic Business Alliance Award at The BrandLaureate World Halal Best Brand E-Branding Awards 2021, and Best Islamic Tourism Leadership Gold Award 2021 by Malaysia Tourism Council. These are recognition of ITC’s efforts and endeavours in formulating new strategies to meet the new normal of the business environment to ensure business continuity and sustainability, notwithstanding its role to develop and grow the Islamic tourism segment in Malaysia.

In 2022, Malaysia was again named top country in the world in the MFT sector by the State of the Global Islamic Economy (SGIE) Report 2022 by DinarStandard in partnership with Salaam Standard and supported by Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism.

Malaysia also retained the top-ranked destination in the MasterCard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2022, a position it has defended since the launch of the Index in 2015.

These recognitions are an added motivation for ITC to continue to strengthen its efforts in being a prime mover and leading institution to ensure Malaysia is at the forefront of MFTH.

This royal city lies in the shadow of Kuala Lumpur

Just west of one of Asia’s most visited cities is an ancient Islamic empire that gets few tourists to its grand monuments.

The Klang Town Royal Mosque on the banks of the Klang River.

Although Kuala Lumpur receives millions of tourists a year , very few take the short taxi ride from the Malaysian mega-capital to the small waterside city of Klang. Here on the Malacca Strait , which separates Malaysia and Indonesia, lies the little known but once fabulously wealthy Selangor Sultanate. Klang is the sultanate’s royal capital, and it’s where visitors will find such hidden treasures as the grand Alam Shah Palace.

( From fiery curries to spicy satays, here’s what to eat in Kuala Lumpur .)

Although visitors can’t enter the palace, which remains the home of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, ninth ruler of Selangor Sultanate, they can spy its giant gilded dome before joining new walking tours of Klang’s heritage sites. These locations collectively tell the tale of how the Selangor Sultanate came into being in the aftermath of a royal assassination, resisted European invaders, shaped Malay history, and birthed Kuala Lumpur.

What is the Selangor Sultanate?

Selangor has a complex present and past. It continues to be a royal region ruled by a sultan. Yet Selangor is also one of 13 states in Malaysia, which is a constitutional monarchy, like the United Kingdom and Canada, governed by a parliamentary democracy with a king as its head of state. Malaysia’s monarch changes every five years, rotating between the sultans of nine royal families, including Selangor.

The origins of this sultanate, meanwhile, are tied to migration, Dutch intervention, and the murder of a Malay ruler. In the late 1600s, Bugis people from Indonesia began settling in Selangor to escape the Dutch, who’d colonized swathes of Southeast Asia.

Then in 1699 the Malacca Strait’s dominant power, Johor Sultanate, lost its monarch to assassination. With no blood successor to succeed him, Johor’s influence waned and a power vacuum emerged.

“The absence of a centralizing ruler in Johor meant that various ethnic groups that had migrated to the region—Bugis, Minangkabau—had opportunity to develop their own states, often through intermarriage with local Malay elites,” explains Timothy Barnard, associate professor of history at National University of Singapore.

The Bugis steadily grew their influence in the Malacca Strait before creating in 1766 the Selangor Sultanate.

What to do in Klang

Tourists can follow this story at Klang’s impressive Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery . Housed in an early 1900s colonial building, it is personally curated by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Via paintings, maps, signage, and artifacts, the museum details how Selangor fought military, political, and trade battles with the Dutch, and created a mining area which became Kuala Lumpur. But the sultanate couldn’t withstand the British, who colonized Malaysia for more than a century from 1824.

Tourists can delve deeper into this imperial legacy during new English-language guided walks   to 11 key historic sites. The tours will be offered regularly from June 2024.

Tourists can also follow this heritage trail independently, via the map on Visit Selangor’s website . In doing so they’ll view the towering minarets of Tengku Kelana Indian Mosque, the lively market of Little India, the distinctive red-and-white facade of the old Klang Fire Station, and the colonial elegance of the Royal Klang Club .

An Instagram-famous mosque outside Klang

Selangor’s royal tourist trail also extends beyond Klang. In the district of Kuala Langat, 10 miles south of Klang, tourists can admire the landscaped gardens and delicate stonework of Jugra Palace , built in the early 1900s as an official imperial residence.

A woman arrives at Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque.

Meanwhile, Selangor’s modern state capital, Shah Alam, showcases royal heritage at its huge Sultan Alam Shah Museum and nearby Shah Alam Royal Mausoleum. Shaped like a traditional Minangkabau house, the former displays almost 4,000 artifacts across five galleries. The latter is a verdant complex where visitors can see the gilt tombs of Selangor royalty.

( What can we learn from Istanbul’s many mosques? )

But Shah Alam’s main tourist draw is a photogenic 1980s building with social media fame. Foreigners flock to Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque to pose for images before its giant azure dome, 466-foot-tall minarets, and intricate geometric motifs. Many wouldn’t know this magnificent structure is named after the ruler of a sultanate called Selangor.

Tourist crowds are unlikely to descend on Klang anytime soon, no matter how unique the tales revealed by its new walking tours—at least, not while it remains hidden in the ever expanding shadow of skyscraper-laden Kuala Lumpur.

Travelling locally is the new trend for Malaysian tourists, says MATTA president

K UALA LUMPUR: Travel local is the new cool trend now, as more Malaysians are exploring their backyard extensively, says The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) president

Nigel Wong said travellers had been keener to explore local destinations, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, creating new tourism ideas and attractions.

"More Malaysians are exploring their backyard extensively, viewing their own country through new lenses.

"This has resulted in a surge of creativity, especially amongst domestic and inbound tourism stakeholders.

"Even more encouraging is the refreshing enthusiasm demonstrated by many of our leaders in driving not only the conversation but also the execution of bold strategies that will elevate tourism within their territories, as well as nationally," said Wong at the launch of the 54th edition of the MATTA Fair at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) here on Saturday (March 23).

The event was graced by the Regent of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and his consort Raja Puan Muda of Perlis Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.

Also present were Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan, Tourism Malaysia chairman Datuk Dr Yasmin Mahmood, Tourism Malaysia director-general Manoharan Periasamy, MATTA Fair organising chairman Datuk Tan Kok Liang, who is also Malaysia Tourism Federation president, and other dignitaries.

While the pandemic had changed the world, Wong said the changes were more obvious in some industries, such as travel and tourism.

"It has forced us to rethink and reimagine the way we travel, to grow up, to mature, to embrace the fact that we are inextricably connected globally.

"It also acknowledges that we must embrace this paradigm shift to ensure that our tourism sector, which Malaysians do very well, will be sustainable and thrive.

"One significant trend to emerge post-pandemic is the update in domestic tourism," he said.

Citing the example of Perlis, which is promoted as this fair’s Favorite Malaysian Destination, Wong said the fact that the state is a Unesco Geopark itself made it a "truly hidden gem in plain sight."

"It's not only famous for its harum manis mangoes, its unique and harmonious blend of Southern Thai and Malay cultures, its rolling fields and national parks - evokes a sense of returning to a time when life was simpler," he said.

Perlis Geopark, spanning 1,001 square kilometres, is at the tip of Peninsular Malaysia's west coast. It comprises 819 square kilometres of land and 182 square kilometres of coastal area.

Positioned in the northernmost part of the peninsula, the geopark borders Thailand to the north and Kedah state to the south.

Adjacent to Perlis Geopark was the globally recognised Satun Unesco Global Geopark, while to the west is the Langkawi Unesco Global Geopark.

Noting that transportation was a key driver of tourism, Wong said all must recognise and acknowledge that travel is a two-way street.

"Both public and private sectors must stop being inward-focused and push towards a more open environment, where both the inflow and outflow of tourists are encouraged and efficiently managed."

Calling on all stakeholders to come together and play their part in tourism promotion, Wong said the MATTA Fair, which has been held nationwide in almost every state, is still "the best way of promoting travel and tourism."

"Each MATTA Fair in Mitec covers some 37,000 square meters of exhibition space and attracts nearly 150,000 visitors, averaging a turnover of approximately RM300mil each edition.

"Out of that, RM90mil came from domestic tourism sales – all over three days," he said.

In his opening speech, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin said Perlis is privileged to be highlighted as "Malaysia's Favorite Destination" in this MATTA Fair.

"I hope that MATTA will further enhance the promotion of Perlis as a beautiful, peaceful and unique tourist destination.

"Please come to Perlis to discover its 'undeniable charm.'

"On that note, Perlis is also eager to see investments in having either four or five-star hotels, to support the positive increase in tourist numbers flowing in each day exceeding four million visitors in 2023," he said.

Tuanku Syed Faizuddin also called on all tourism players, including the state governments, to redouble their efforts and cooperation to thoroughly prepare for the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign.

He said the campaign targets the arrival of 26.1 million foreign tourists and will bring optimal economic impact towards elevating the country as one of the major tourist destinations in the international market.

Admission into the MATTA Fair is free, and it was open from 10am to 9pm until Sunday (March 24).

To ease the convenience of visitors, free shuttle bus service is provided at two locations - KL Sentral and Sunway Putra Mall - that depart for Mitec every 10 minutes from 8am to 10pm.

Much larger spaces are dedicated to dining, and a greater variety of cuisines are also available to ensure that those fasting can break their fast in more comfort.
