A Little Bit About Bilaspur

Bilaspur

The city of Bilaspur is about 400 years old. It is believed that the city of Bilaspur was named after a fisherwoman named ‘Bilasa’. It is said that in those days Ratanpur was the capital of the local kingdom and modern-day Bilaspur was just a small settlement on the banks of River Arpa. According to folklore, the king took fancy to Bilasa, a local fisherwoman settled in this part of his kingdom. Bilasa did not return his affections and refused to surrender to the king. She self-immolated herself to escape his advances. From that day onwards, this place came to be known as ‘Bilasa ki Nagri’. The name later became Bilaspur.

The foundation of modern-day Bilaspur- the city as we see today- was laid in the late 19th century when the Bengal-Nagpur Railway was being constructed. Bilaspur was selected as a major station and later grew into one of the divisional headquarters.

Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh has slowly evolved into a tourist destination. It is known for its rich cultural background, excellent quality of rice, and high-quality Kosa silk. The popularity that Chhattisgarh has gained for being the ‘rice bowl of India’ can be attributed to Bilaspur. It is nestled in the eastern part of Chhattisgarh and is a city of immense historical and cultural significance. Bilaspur is dotted with numerous historical monuments. Despite the rampant modernization, the city has not lost its soul, and this is what sets Bilaspur apart from other cities. Its vibrancy is infectious, and you will fall in love with the city in a heartbeat.

The wonder that Bilaspur is, needless to say, there is no shortage of tourist attractions here. Plan a visit to this wonderful place, and you will not be disappointed. Beneath its delightfully chaotic façade, Bilaspur is a place fiercely protective of its history and culture.

1. Devrani – Jethani Temples

Devrani Jethani Temples are situated in Tala in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. These are the remains of two ancient temples here that lie a few meters apart from each other. According to legend, they were built for the wives of two royal brothers. Devrani-Jethani refer to sisters-in-law. In Hindi, Jethani means the wife of the elder brother, while Devrani refers to the wife of the younger brother. Jethani Temple lies in a tattered condition presently. The temple has been rendered structure-less, and the stones and sculptures that once provided strength and aesthetic quality to the temple lay scattered. You can see the mammoth sculptures of the elephants that once used to adorn the entrance to this temple lying separately. The beautifully carved pillars that once supported the ceiling are now standing in isolation. But the remains tell us that this place would have  once been an architectural wonder.

The Devrani temple or the temple of the younger sister-in-law has its base platform intact along with the stairs that lead to the main shrine. The sculptures in this temple give us a fair idea about its architectural glory in its time. The thick walls of this temple have intricately carved human and animal faces, probably to depict some scenes from life or ancient epics. The top panel of the temple features celestial figures. The panel below has some sculptures that are unrecognizable now. These temples, in spite of having fallen prey to the vagaries of time, stand to tell exciting tales about bygone days .A small museum inside the premises of the temple houses a few sculptures excavated from this place.

To reach these temples, you need to cross a set of relatively newer temples by the name of ‘Shri Siddhanath Ashram’.

Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh

Bilaspur is a historic town that has gone through several phases of governance and changes over the centuries. It was initially the capital of a state named Kahlur, founded in the 7th century by the Chandel Rajputs, who traced their lineage to the rulers of Chanderi in present-day Madhya Pradesh.

In 1663, the town of Bilaspur was founded, and it later became a princely state under British India’s authority, falling under the jurisdiction of the Punjab province. One of the notable events that occurred in Bilaspur was the visit of Guru Tegh Bahadur in 1665. Rani Champa of Bilaspur offered a piece of land to the Guru, which he accepted and named Nanaki after his mother. This settlement became an important Sikh pilgrimage site and is now known as Anandpur Sahib.

In 1932, Bilaspur became a part of the newly created Punjab States Agency and was later separated from it in 1936 to become a part of the Punjab Hill States Agency. In 1948, the local ruler, Raja Sir Anand Chand, the last ruler of the Chandel dynasty, acceded to the Government of India, and Bilaspur became a separate state under a chief commissioner.

However, on July 1, 1954, Bilaspur State was made a district of Himachal Pradesh by an act of the Indian Parliament. The construction of the Govind Sagar Dam on the Sutlej River led to the historic town of Bilaspur being submerged, and a new town was built on higher ground.

History of Naina Devi Temple

The history of Naina Devi Temple dates back to several centuries back.  According to legend, a cow herder named Naina was passing through the hills of Bilaspur when he noticed a stone that was emanating a divine glow. Intrigued, he dug up the stone and found a beautiful idol of Goddess Naina Devi. Another story says the same cow herder Naina while  grazing his cattle observed that a white cow was showering her milk on a stone. He saw the same thing for next several days. The shepherd boy told about the entire incident to the King of Bilaspur Raja Bir Chand. When the king also saw it happening, he built a temple on that spot and named the temple after Naina the boy.

Over the years, the temple gained popularity among the locals and devotees started flocking to the shrine to seek the blessings of Naina Devi. The temple underwent several renovations and additions over the centuries and stands today as a testament to the faith and devotion of millions of people.

Mythology and Significance of Naina Devi Temple

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Sati’s eyes fell at this very spot where the Naina Devi Temple now stands. The legend says that Lord Shiva carrying the body of his wife, Sati, performed the Tandava dance. Naina Devi is believed to be one of the 51 shaktipeeths where limbs of Goddess Sati fell on earth. It is believed that worshipping at the temple fulfills the wishes of the devotees and bestows them with divine blessings. The temple is considered to be one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India.

Sati and Shiva Story

Sati was the consort of Lord Shiva and daughter of King Daksha.  Once king Daksha performed a yagna where he invited all except Sati and Lord Shiva . Goddess Sati however went to the yajna (the fire worship and offerings) despite Lord Shiva telling her not go there.  At the yajna Daksha insulted Lord Shiva and Sati which saddened Sati so much that she killed herself.  When Lord Shiva came to know of this he severed the head of Daksha from his body.  This however did not calm him and picking up the body of Sati whom he loved so much, he started the dance of destruction called Tandav.  All the Gods approached Lord Vishnu for help as Shiva was hell bent on destroying the world.  To save the world Lord Vishnu threw his sudarshana chakra and cut the body of Sati into 51 pieces that fell on different parts of the Earth.  These 51 places are called Shaktipeeths and Naina Devi in Bilaspur is considered one of the places.  It is also believed Lord Shiva assumed the form of Bhairava and at every shaktipeeth there is a Shiva idol who is there to protect the devi.
