New temporary public policy will allow visitors to apply for a work permit without having to leave Canada

Visitors who are currently in Canada and have a valid job offer will be able to apply for an employer-specific work permit and, if approved, receive the permit without having to leave the country, thanks to a new public policy announced today by the Honourable Marco E.L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.

August 24, 2020—Ottawa— Visitors who are currently in Canada and have a valid job offer will be able to apply for an employer-specific work permit and, if approved, receive the permit without having to leave the country, thanks to a new public policy announced today by the Honourable Marco E.L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.

This temporary policy change takes effect immediately and will benefit employers in Canada who continue to face difficulties finding the workers they need, as well as temporary residents who would like to contribute their labour and skills to Canada’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the pandemic, temporary residents who remained in Canada were encouraged to maintain valid legal status. With air travel limited around the world, some visitors to Canada have been unable to leave, while some foreign workers had to change their status to visitor because their work permit was expiring and they didn’t have a job offer to be able to apply for a new work permit. Some employers in Canada have also faced ongoing labour and skills shortages throughout this period, including those who provide important goods and services that Canadians rely on.

To be eligible, an applicant looking to benefit from this temporary public policy must

  • have valid status in Canada as a visitor on the day they apply
  • have been in Canada on August 24, 2020 and remained in Canada
  • have a job offer
  • submit an application for an employer-specific work permit that is supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or an LMIA-exempt offer of employment, no later than March 31, 2021
  • meet all other standard admissibility criteria

This temporary public policy also provides the opportunity for applicants who meet these criteria and who had a valid work permit in the past 12 months to begin working for their new employer before their work permit application has been fully approved. Quick facts

Any type of visitor who meets the criteria is eligible to apply under this new public policy, including super visa holders, business visitors and those who entered Canada through a Global Skills Strategy work permit exemption. 

Foreign nationals who arrive in Canada as visitors after August 24, 2020, are not eligible under the public policy.

Prior to this temporary policy change, a person applying as a temporary resident would usually need to apply for their initial work permit before they came to Canada. If they were already in Canada with visitor status when they were approved for a work permit, they would need to leave Canada and return before their work permit was issued to them.

If you’re coming to Canada, you need to know about two important things: Visitor Visas and Work Permits. They’re like special permission slips that let you do different things while you’re in Canada.

A Visitor Visa, commonly referred to as a Tourist Visa, serves the primary purpose of allowing foreign individuals to enter Canada temporarily. Here are some key characteristics of a Visitor Visa:

Purpose: The primary purpose of a Visitor Visa is to facilitate tourism, family visits, or business meetings within Canada. It is not intended for employment or long-term stays for work-related activities.

Limited Duration: When issued, a Visitor Visa specifies the period for which an individual is authorized to stay in Canada. Typically, this duration ranges from a few weeks to several months, depending on the specific circumstances and the discretion of Canadian immigration authorities.

Activities Allowed: Visitors on a Tourist Visa are expected to engage in non-work-related activities during their stay. This may include exploring Canada’s tourist attractions, visiting friends and family, or attending business meetings and conferences that do not involve employment.

No Employment: Holders of a Visitor Visa are strictly prohibited from engaging in any form of paid employment or business activities that generate income within Canada. This visa category is meant for leisure and non-economic purposes.

No Employer Sponsorship: Unlike a Work Permit, a Visitor Visa does not require sponsorship from a Canadian employer. It is typically obtained based on individual eligibility and intent to visit Canada for the approved reasons.

Extension: In some cases, individuals on a Visitor Visa may apply for an extension of their stay within Canada if they have valid reasons, such as family emergencies or other unforeseen circumstances. Extensions are subject to approval by immigration authorities.

What is the Eligibility for a Work Permit?

To convert your visitor visa to a work permit, certain eligibility criteria must be met:

Visitor Status

You must be in Canada with valid visitor status when you apply for a work permit. Ensure your visitor visa has not expired, or you have maintained legal visitor status during your stay.

You need a job offer from a Canadian employer to apply for a work permit. The employer may need to obtain a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) in some cases, depending on the type of work.

Meet Health and Security Requirements

Applicants may need to undergo a medical examination and provide police clearance certificates, depending on their home country.

No Criminal Record

You must not have any criminal convictions or pose a security risk.

Intend to Leave

You must convince the immigration authorities that you plan to leave Canada once your work permit expires.

The Conversion Process: Step-By-Step Guide

Once you’ve made sure you meet the requirements, you can begin the process of turning your tourist visa into a work permit in Canada. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

The first step is to find a job in Canada. You need to get a job offer from a Canadian employer who is willing to hire you and support your application for a work permit. They should want you to work for them.

Some jobs require something called an LMIA, which stands for Labor Market Impact Assessment. Your employer needs to apply for this if your job needs it. The LMIA checks if hiring you will affect Canadian workers. If your job doesn’t need an LMIA, you can skip this step.

You’ll need to fill out a form to apply for your work permit. This form asks for information about you, your job, and your employer. You’ll also need to collect important documents like your job offer letter and any other papers they ask for.

After filling out the form and gathering your documents, you can send in your application. You can do this online or at a place called a Visa Application Center (VAC). You’ll also have to pay some money for the processing of your application.

Depending on where you come from and the kind of work you’ll do, you might need to give your fingerprints and have a medical checkup. This makes sure you’re healthy and safe to work in Canada.

Foreign nationals who are visiting Canada on a tourist or visitor visa can continue to be eligible to apply for work permits until February 28, 2025.

All the individuals reaching out to inquire about this topic: Yes, you can apply for a work permit from within Canada, but you need to fulfill the requirements to support your work permit application.

Anyone having a visitor visa and currently in Canada doesn’t mean they can just apply for a work permit by simply submitting any application to IRCC.

Such interested visitor visa holders need to satisfy all the work permit criteria, including a supporting Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or a valid job offer (if offered, the job is LMIA-exempt) by the Canadian employer.

A temporary public policy initially announced in 2020 was extended on February 28, 2023, by the former immigration minister Sean Fraser.

As per the policy, foreign nationals who are visiting Canada and obtain a valid job offer will be able to apply for and receive a work visa without leaving the country.

Visitors applying under this public policy who have held a work permit within the last 12 months may also request interim work authorization to begin working for their new employer sooner.

IRCC Makes New Extension For Visitors to Work Permit Policy By 2 Years

The purpose of this policy

Keeping this interim policy in place gives Canadian firms another option, as many are facing major worker shortages in this era of economic development.

Prior to this temporary policy adjustment, anyone wishing to work here had to apply for their initial work visa from outside Canada.

If they were already inside the country with visitor status when they were authorized for a work permit, they would have to leave before their work permit could be issued.

Leaving Canada is no longer necessary with this policy in effect.

Initially, this policy was only for the visitors who came before August 24 2020 and have a job offer in addition to other requirements.

But then this policy was amended to allow all visitor visa holders entering Canada without considering their date of entry.

Eligibility Criteria To Apply

An applicant looking forward to benefiting from this temporary public policy must:

  • have a valid visitor status in Canada on the day they apply
  • have a job offer backed by a labour market impact assessment (LMIA) or an LMIA-exempt offer of employment
  • submit an application for an employer-specific work permit before February 28, 2025, and
  • satisfy all other standard admissibility requirements

Candidates with visitor status who have already held a work permit in the last 12 months under this temporary policy are also eligible if they meet the below-listed criteria:

  • When you apply, you must be physically present in Canada.
  • You must remain in the country while your application is being processed.
  • You will not be eligible for this public policy if you depart while your application is being processed.
  • While applying for a work permit, you must be a visitor with valid status.
  • If your visitor status has expired, you must restore it before applying for a work permit.
  • applied for an employer-specific work permit between August 24, 2020, and February 28, 2025
  • had a valid work permit in the 12 months before to applying for a new work permit

Visitors inside Canada who have held a valid work permit in the last 12 months can follow particular guidelines to obtain interim work permit.

Eligibility Requirements For Interim Authorization To Work

Interim Work Authorization is only granted to visitor visa holders who have held a valid work permit in the previous 12 months under this temporary arrangement.

After submitting an application for a work permit under this policy, applicants must complete the IRCC Web form with the message that IRCC has specified below.

I have submitted my application for a work permit online. OR I have submitted my application on paper and the postal/courier tracking number is NUMBER. I intend to work for [employer NAME] / [occupation] as specified in the aforementioned work permit application. I understand that providing false, misleading or incorrect information is a violation of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and may result in enforcement measures against me.

Make sure you fill out the sections in square brackets, including the

  • work permit number (begins with a “U”)
  • name of your employer
  • title of your job

After completing the webform, you must wait for an email from IRCC informing you that you can start working.

This will be your interim work authorization before getting the work permit and this process could take up to 30 days (6 weeks).

How to Apply for a Change in My Work Permit

Step 1: ensure you have the necessary tools and payment method.

To apply online, you'll need access to a scanner or camera to digitize your documents, as well as a valid credit or debit card for payment.

Step 2: Familiarize Yourself with the Instructions

Even if you're applying online, it's essential to review the instruction guide beforehand. This guide provides detailed explanations on how to complete each section of the application form. Note that Venezuelan passport holders may have additional requirements to fulfill.

Step 3: Prepare Your Answers for the Online Tool

The good news is that applying to extend or modify your work permit before expiry allows you to stay in Canada while a decision is made legally. This includes authorization to continue working under your current permit's conditions.

  • Employer-Specific Permits: You can maintain your current employment (same employer, job, and location) until a decision is reached.
  • Open Work Permits: Holders can continue changing employers and jobs as usual.

Proof of Continued Work Authorization:

Changing Employers with an Employer-Specific Work Permit

Eligibility for Early Work Authorization

If you hold an employer-specific work permit and plan to change jobs or employers in Canada, you might be eligible to work for your new employer before your new work permit application is approved. This applies to everyone except:

  • Business Visitors: Individuals on business visitor visas cannot work in Canada.
  • Global Skills Strategy Workers: Workers under the Global Skills Strategy with short-term permits cannot request early work authorization.

Requirements for Early Work Authorization

To qualify for this benefit, you must meet two conditions:

  • Submitted New Employer-Specific Work Permit Application: You've already applied for a new work permit tied to your new employer.
  • An employer-specific work permit
  • An exemption allowing you to work without a permit (not including business visitors or Global Skills Strategy workers)

How to Request Early Work Authorization

Here's how to request authorization to work while your new employer-specific work permit application is being processed:

Step 1: Submit an IRCC Web Form

Fill out the IRCC web form and ensure you copy the relevant text snippet (based on your situation) into the "Your Enquiry" section. Be sure to replace bracketed information with the following details:

If you applied on paper and don't have your application number, include your courier tracking number for easier application retrieval.

Important Note: To expedite processing of your request, include the code PPCHANGEWORK2020 when pasting the text snippet. Omitting this code may cause delays.

Step 2: Await Email Response

After submitting the web form, expect a response from IRCC via email within 10-15 business days (longer if you applied on paper). This email will inform you of your authorization to work while your application is being processed. Remember, this email is not your actual work permit.

What to Do If You Want to Travel Outside Canada and Then Re-Enter

Renewing Your Work Permit and Travel

Renewed work permits issued after May 1, 2017, automatically include an eTA. However, if your permit was renewed before this date and you lack an eTA, you must obtain one for air travel back to Canada. Lawful permanent residents of the United States must carry a valid passport and green card for all travel modes to Canada as of April 26, 2022.

Travel Requirements for Citizens from Visa-Required Countries

Citizens from visa-required countries need a valid visa and work permit to re-enter Canada. If returning directly from the US or St. Pierre and Miquelon, a visa isn't necessary. However, if your visa has expired or was single-entry, you must reapply. Some visa-required citizens receive an eTA upon work permit renewal, valid for five years or until passport expiry, for air travel to Canada. U.S. citizens should carry a valid passport for air travel and relevant documents for other modes of entry.

Can I Keep Working While I Wait for My Work Permit Extension?

Yes, in most cases! If you submit your application to extend your work permit before it expires, you're legally authorized to continue working under your current permit's conditions while IRCC processes your request. You'll receive a letter (WP-EXT except PGWP) for online applications as temporary proof of authorization.

I Want to Change Employers with My Employer-Specific Work Permit. Can I Start My New Job Right Away?

Potentially! You might be eligible to request authorization to work for your new employer before your new work permit application is approved. This allows you to transition jobs sooner potentially. However, there are eligibility requirements and a specific process to follow through the IRCC web form.

Before you can begin to travel this beautifully expansive country, you might need to apply for a tourist visa. Many people do not realize how easily your application can fail, which is why we are revealing our top secrets to a successful Canadian Tourist Visa application .

Reasons Why Your Tourist Visa Could Be Denied

Before we get into the reasons why your application can get denied, we need to think about what considerations IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada) makes when they assess your application. The primary question that crosses the visa officer’s mind is, “ Will the applicant return to his or her own country when the Canadian tourist visa expires? ” You will need to make sure you convince the visa officer that the answer to the question is yes. Here’s how:

1 - You Only Submitted the Required Documents

If you only submit the required documents, you are providing the bare minimum for your case. In many instances, just submitting the documents listed by the IRCC will not be enough to convince the visa officer that you will return to your home country. Do you think the following documents are sufficient proof?

  • Application forms;
  • Application fees;
  • Proof of financial support;
  • Photocopy of your return ticket and travel itinerary; and
  • Additional documents requested by your local visa office

If you have any doubt, surely the visa officer will have some doubt too.

2 - You Did Not Show Sufficient Evidence of Connection to Home Country

Your application may be denied if you did not take the time to consider all of your connections to your home country. Remember, this is specific to your home country. If, for example, you are only living in Australia and you are a citizen of Saudi, you will need to show evidence of your connection to Saudi and not Australia.

Connections to property and employment are a great starting point. To prove your connection to these, you can look at things like copies of title deeds, lease agreements, employment contracts and employment letters. Make sure they are as detailed as possible, for instance, see to it that your employment contract includes the length of your employment, your position and when you are expected to return to work.

If you take the time to think about your connections to your home country, you will quickly realize there are so many options to include. If you participate in local community activities you can add letters confirming your involvement. You can even include proof that you caring for aging family members if they are dependent on you.

3 - Your Letter of Invitation is not Detailed Enough

Though a letter of invitation is not explicitly needed in your Canadian Tourist Visa application, it serves as great evidence to prove that you intend to return to your home country. If you are visiting a friend or family member in Canada, they must write a detailed letter stating that they will provide you with food and bed during your stay in the country.

The letter must include your name, birth date and travel dates. It must also be signed by the person writing the letter.

Now that you know what to avoid, let’s look at some tips to improve your application.

1 - Make the Purpose of Your Visit Clear

Be clear about your intention of coming to Canada. The length of your visit should match the purpose of your trip. If you wish to visit a family member, do not indicate that you are going on a business trip. If you want to visit a friend, do not list the individual as a family member because you think it may make your visit seem more compelling. If you present any falsehoods on your application, your application will be denied.

2 - Be Specific About Your Status in Your Home Country

Foreign nationals are increasingly drawn to Canada for its diverse and promising work opportunities.

By fulfilling the eligibility criteria of one of the following 22 groups, foreign nationals may explore work opportunities without a work permit in Canada.

Business visitors

This group streamlines access for individuals involved in business or trade within Canada, as long as they are not entering the Canadian labour market. While various subcategories exist within this classification, all business visitors must satisfy the following overarching criteria:

  • There must be no intent to enter the Canadian labour market (there will be no gainful employment in the country)
  • The worker’s activity in Canada must be international in scope (it is assumed that a business visitor will engage in cross-border activity of some sort)

For business visitors in Canada working for a foreign employer, the following criteria are assumed:

  • The primary source of the worker’s compensation is outside of Canada
  • The principal place of employment is located outside of Canada
  • The employer’s profits are accrued outside of Canada

When entering Canada, individuals on business visits should be ready to provide immigration officials with documentation verifying their intended status in the country. The required documentation will differ depending on the specific circumstances. A support letter from the parent company or an invitation letter from the Canadian company can increase your chances of being accepted as a business visitor.

Foreign representatives and their family members

Foreign representatives, along with their personal staff and family members, are eligible to work in Canada without the need for a work permit. To qualify for this exemption, foreign representatives must obtain accreditation from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT). This exception also extends to diplomatic representatives assigned to United Nations offices in Canada.

For family members of foreign representatives to work without a work permit, they must obtain a 'no objection letter' from the Protocol Department of DFAIT.

Military personnel

Military or civilian personnel stationed in Canada under the Visiting Forces Act are permitted to work and study without the need for work or study permits. This exemption extends to the families of these individuals as well.

Moreover, military personnel are exempt from passport requirements, temporary resident visas, and foreign national medical examinations. However, civilians and their family members are still obligated to obtain these documents if deemed necessary.

Foreign government officers

Canada participates in agreements with other nations that facilitate the international exchange of government employees. These agreements allow foreign workers to come to Canada and work for a department or agency within federal or provincial governments. These individuals are not affiliated with a foreign mission or organization and do not hold accreditation from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT).

For executive-level officers engaged in such roles, a contract from Canada’s Public Service Commission (PSC) is necessary. However, officers operating below an executive capacity do not need a contract, although assignments lasting beyond three months should involve a formal letter of agreement between the officer and their Canadian employer.

Family members of officers covered by this exemption generally receive an open work permit or are exempt from the permit requirement while in Canada.

American cross-border maritime law enforcement officers

Certain law enforcement vessels operating across borders are operated by joint Canadian and American crews. These personnel operate on both sides of the US/Canada border, and when within Canadian territory, American crew members are allowed to perform their job responsibilities without the necessity of obtaining additional work authorization.

In-flight security officers (IFSOs)

Foreign International Flight Security Officers (IFSOs) are hired by foreign governments to ensure safety on foreign aircraft. Given their designation by a foreign government, they are permitted to work in Canada without a work permit, as long as their responsibilities are limited to providing security onboard a foreign aircraft.

However, IFSOs from countries mandating a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) for entry into Canada must obtain this visa to carry out their duties in Canadian airspace.

On-Campus employment

A student can work on-campus at their educational institution if they hold a valid study permit and they are a full-time student at one of the following types of schools:

  • A public post-secondary institution (i.e. college or university)
  • A collège d’enseignement général et professionnel (CEGEP)
  • A college-level private institution in Quebec
  • A Canadian private institution authorized to confer degrees

A student can work on-campus throughout the duration of their study permit, if the student is in full-time studies. The scope of employment can encompass various standard on-campus jobs.

Individuals working as research or teaching assistants off-campus as part of a research grant can be considered on-campus workers. The student must also meet all of the following additional criteria:

  • Be recommended by their academic department
  • The work to be performed must be directed by a department head or faculty member
  • The work must take place in a research institute or program in an affiliated hospital or other research location

In addition, once a student has completed their studies and has applied for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), they are eligible to work full time while waiting for the PGWP as long as they still hold a valid study permit.

Performing artists

Many foreign performing artists can work in Canada without a work permit. However, some types of performers/performances require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) and a work permit.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has outlined some common performers that can enter Canada without a work permit. Some include:

  • Bands performing at bars, pubs, restaurants, etc.
  • Foreign-based musical and theatrical individuals and groups and their essential crew, working outside bars and restaurants
  • Guest artists (not employed) within a Canadian performance group for a time-limited engagement
  • Persons performing at a private event, such as a wedding

In addition, certain performers may work in Canada without a work permit under different sub-categories. These include:

  • Film producers (business visitors)
  • Film and recording studio users (business visitors)
  • Persons doing guest spots on Canadian TV and radio broadcasts (guest speakers)

Athletes and team members

Both professional and amateur athletes have the option to come to Canada for individual or team-based sports activities or events. Similarly, foreign coaches, trainers, and other essential team members are eligible to travel to Canada to take part in these events.

The examples provided by IRCC of individuals who may qualify under this exemption are as follows:

  • Amateur players on Canadian teams
  • Foreign pet owners entering their own animals in a show
  • Jockeys racing horses from foreign-based stables
  • Race car drivers
  • Individuals attending professional team tryouts
  • Foreign team members participating in a competition in Canada
  • Grooms or team support members
  • Full or part-time coaches and trainers

The spouses of professional athletes are eligible for a LMIA-exempt work permit for their time in Canada.

News reporters and media crews

News reporters and their crews are allowed to report on events in Canada without obtaining a work permit. This applies to journalists, given that their employing company is not Canadian. However, this exemption does not extend to managerial or clerical personnel, unless these individuals are covering special events lasting for six months or less.

In most cases, media crews coming to Canada to produce travelogues, documentaries, etc., are obligated to obtain work permits. Nevertheless, the final decision rests with the Canadian Visa Officer reviewing their application.

Public speakers

Presenters at events, including guest speakers, commercial speakers, and seminar leaders, are allowed present in Canada without requiring a work permit.

Commercial speakers falling into this category typically have a vested interest in the event where they are presenting. This often involves renting a commercial space, advertising the event, charging admission, etc. However, if commercial speakers are hired by a Canadian entity, they must obtain a LMIA and a work permit for their time in Canada.

Convention organizers

This group encompasses individuals who come to Canada to coordinate a convention or conference, along with the administrative support staff of the organizing committee. These events may include corporate meetings, trade shows, exhibitions, and similar gatherings. Notably, hands-on service providers like audio-visual specialists do not fall under this category.

Convention organizers hired to work on a Canadian event are not permitted to work without a work permit. IRCC specifies a 'Canadian event' as one organized by an entity located and actively conducting business in Canada.

Individuals attending conferences and meetings are regarded as business visitors and are exempt from the necessity of obtaining a work permit.

Those in the profession of preaching, overseeing religious services, or providing spiritual counseling are allowed to work in Canada without the need for a work permit. This applies to ordained ministers, laypeople, or members of a religious order. The primary responsibilities of the temporary worker should align with a distinct religious objective, such as offering religious instruction or promoting a particular faith.

Individuals seeking entry to Canada under this exemption should submit documentation to confirm the authenticity of the employment offer and their capacity to minister to a congregation, including credentials and past employment records.

Individuals conducting charitable or religious work in Canada still require a work permit; however, this permit is exempt from the LMIA process.

Judges, referees, and similar officials

Judges, referees, and similar officials can come to Canada to take part in international amateur events and competitions in the realms of sports, arts, agriculture, or culture.

For amateur sports competitions, the events should be coordinated by an international amateur sport organization and hosted by a Canadian entity. In this context, "amateur" denotes a competition in which athletes are not remunerated for their participation. However, judges, referees, and comparable officials intending to participate in professional sports competitions are required to undergo a positive LMIA and obtain a work permit.

Examiners and evaluators

Foreign professors and researchers may enter Canada to judge theses and projects completed by students without needing a work permit.

Expert witnesses and investigators

Experts required to enter Canada for surveys or analyses serving as evidence, or to testify before a regulatory body or court, are exempt from obtaining a work permit.

Healthcare students

Foreign healthcare students from international institutions can work clinical clerkships or short-term practicums in Canada without needing a work permit. The fields can include medicine, nursing, medical technology, and occupational and physical therapy. These practicums must be unpaid and not exceed four months. However, paid work or stays beyond four months necessitate a work permit.

Civil aviation inspectors

Flight operations and cabin safety inspectors inspecting commercial international flights do not require work permits if employed by a recognized aeronautical authority and have valid documentation.

Aviation accident or incident inspector

Accredited representatives and advisors aiding in aviation accident or incident investigations under the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act are exempt from work permit requirements.

Crew members on foreign-owned means of transportation not registered in Canada and primarily engaged in international transportation do not need work permits, covering operations, maintenance, or passenger service roles.

Emergency service providers

Workers entering Canada for emergency services during natural disasters or commercial accidents can do so without work permits. Canada-US agreements facilitate the entry of emergency aid workers, including doctors, medical teams, appraisers, and foreign insurance adjusters.

Maintained status

Individuals can continue working under the conditions of an expired work permit, provided they applied for a new one before the original expiration. While awaiting a response, they must stay in Canada to maintain status. Once a decision is made, they can either continue working under the new permit or leave Canada.

Hi Everyone, I came to here as a student and then I took open work permit visa. I had change my status to Visitor from Study( to extend my passport visa) I applied for a Visitor Record Extension and then they approved but they didn't say to send your passport. Someone said to me you can send your passport with a letter to the Ottowa IRCC office. I’m still waiting for my original visitor record document(I think it will be delivered within 2 weeks). My question is how can I stamp my visa on my passport?

Brazil keeps pushing back its visa requirement for tourists from Australia, U.S. and Canada. Given the value of these markets to Brazil, maybe it should scrap the requirement altogether.

Brazil postponed reinstating its visa requirements for tourists from Australia, Canada, and the U.S. until 2025, with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signing a decree that included that action on Tuesday.

“The decree… postpones the start of [visa] collection to April 10, 2025,” said the tourism board, Embratur .

In 2019, Brazil changed its rules, allowing citizens from the U.S., Canada, and Australia to travel to Brazil without visas — after years of requiring them.

The Brazilian government planned to reinstate the visa requirement last October. But it postponed the change until January and then until this month. It has now postponed the change until April 2025.

Brazil Embraces Tourism

Embratur has been implementing an international dissemination strategy to inform the press, airlines, operator associations, and tourism agencies of the postponement. 

The U.S. is Brazil’s second-largest international tourist market. Nearly 670,000 Americans visited Brazil in 2023, according to Embratur.  In the first two months of 2024, North American arrivals in Brazil were 11% higher than in the same period of the previous year.

New Visa Rules in 2025

Starting April 10, 2025, Americans, Canadians, and Australians will have to apply for the visa. Its cost stands at $80.90. The visa’s validity length is as follows:

  • Americans: 10-year period. 
  • Canadians: 5-year period.
  • Australians: 5-year period.

Tour operators have warned that the new rules would make Brazil less competitive.
