If you want to visit Sweden and you are a citizen in a country outside the EU, you may need to apply for a permit before the visit. In 2021, embassies around the world received 22,260 Sweden visa applications and rejected 6,654 (30.6%). The Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi received 1,974 applications and rejected 833 (42.3%).

Applying for a Sweden Schengen Visa from India

If you are going to Sweden, you must apply for a visa and you can do this from India as long as you are a citizen or have the legal right to stay in India.

The Embassy of Sweden processes visa applications and will decide whether you can have your visa or not, however, it is VFS Global that is responsible for the receipt of applications. This means that you will hand your application into one of the VFS offices in India. VFS Global accepts Schengen (short-stay) visa applications only. If you are applying for a long-stay visa, you will deal with the embassy directly. For more information, go to the website of The Swedish Migration Agency .

Schengen visa applications are usually processed within 15 days, but it could take as many as 45 days. It is your responsibility to apply in time, so it’s a good idea to apply as soon as possible. You can apply up to 6 months in advance, so don’t leave it too late.

Types of Schengen visas offered at The Embassy of Sweden in India

There are 2 types of visas you can apply for and it is your responsibility to choose the right one:

• Short-stay type (Schengen) visa –  for trips up to 90 days for business , conference, visiting relatives/friends, tourism etc
• Visitors Permit – this is for trips for more than 90 days for employment , study/training, family reunion etc. See the embassy’s website for more information

How Can I Apply for a Sweden Schengen Visa from VFS Global in India?

To help you to apply for your visa, follow these steps:

• Step 1 – Identify visa type
• Step 2 – Begin your application
• Step 3 – Book an appointment
• Step 4 – Pay your fees
• Step 5 – Visit a Visa Application Center
• Step 6 – Track your application
• Step 7 – Collect your passport

Step 2 – Begin your application

Next, go to “step 2” and click on the “download the visa application form” link:

On the next page, first, click on the “download form” tab and then the link for the “Schengen visa application form”:

Save the form to your computer, complete and sign it and then print it out and take it to VFS Global when you attend your appointment.

Step 3 – Book an appointment

Making appointments with the embassy, consulate or visa application center is generally free and can be done yourself. However, If you are running short of time or not sure which consulate to apply to or have no idea how to get this done yourself then not to worry, we will make the appointment for you for a small service fee!

Booking a visa appointment using our services is pretty simple! All you have to do is follow the 3 simple steps below:

• Visit the link to schedule the visa appointment
• Submit the appointment details, the visa you are applying for, consulate you need the appointment for, the country you need the appointment IN and make the payment
• Receive appointment confirmation in email

Once you have completed your visa form, you can drop it off at VFS Global with no need to book an appointment. Please check VFS Global’s opening hours (see below).

Additional information about fees

• There is also a service charge of Rs 1639
• The applicable visa fee in Indian Rupees is as per the current exchange rate. The same is subject to change without notice
• The visa fee and service charges are non-refundable even if your application is refused
• There is an optional courier facility available at Rs 300
• The fees can be paid in cash or by debit/credit card

Step 5 – Visit a visa application center

On the day of your appointment:

• Aim to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment
• You must attend the appointment for your visa application. You cannot send someone in your place
• Only applicants and one parent/caregiver accompanying a child under 18 years are permitted to enter VFS Global
• Take your visa application form, as well as a valid passport or travel document with at least 2 pages that are blank on both sides
• Take all supporting documentation (originals and copies)
• You can pay your fees once you get to the center
• You will also need to submit your fingerprints and photograph. This is known as biometric information collection

You may also be asked questions about your application. Typical questions include:

• What do you know about Sweden?
• Are you meeting friends in Sweden
• Are you married?
• Do you have children?

Step 6 – Track your application

Once your application has been submitted, you can track it. Go to “step 6” and click on the link:

Step 7 – Collect your passport

Once the embassy has reached a decision, your passport will be returned to VFS Global. You can either:

• Pick your documents up from VFS Global. You will need the receipt and some ID
• Have them returned to you by courier (for an additional fee)

The decision will be either:

• Accepted – you will find your visa in your passport
• Rejected – if your application for a visa has been refused, you can appeal the decision. See the embassy’s website for more information

There are different reasons why an application may get rejected:

• No invitation letter – if you are being invited to Sweden by a person or a company/business, you must provide an invitation letter which states certain information (see the document checklists)
• Travel insurance does not cover the whole Schengen Area – even if you are only going to Sweden, the travel insurance must provide cover for the entire Schengen Area
• Proof of financial means not included – you must prove that you can afford your trip, so you should provide at least 3 months’ bank statements and/or other proof of funds
• Passport is not valid for 3 months after your return to India – your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your return to India. If not, you should get a new one before applying for the visa

Documents Required

There are document checklists on VFS Global’s website which you can refer to. You must also sign the checklist and submit it as part of your application.

You should also submit photocopies along with original documents.

Documents include:

• Application for Schengen Visa – please explain your plan for visit
• 1 photograph not older than six months with white background (3.5cm/4.5 cm) (see full photograph specifications ). Must be attached to the application form
• Valid passport – must ha ve been issued within the last 10 years, valid for three months after the scheduled return & include at least two empty page s
• If passport has been extended – enclose a copy of this page & copy of the observation page (if any). Please note, handwritten passports and/or passports that contain manual entries are not acceptable
• Previous Passports available- irrespective of their condition (In case lost – a note is required)
• Proof of lodging such as hotel reservation , rental document of holiday home or campus residence reservation for the entire duration of the stay in the Schengen area
• If you plan to stay in several Schengen countries, proof of travel itinerary (e.g. ticket bookings for transport between different countries)
• Certificate from the travel agency confirming booking of an organized trip or other proof of travel plans
• Marriage certificate and birth certificates of children. (if applicable)
• Flight reservation of return ticket. If traveling to several Schengen states, proof of intra- Schengen flight reservation, train itinerary or car rental
• Travel medical insurance valid for all Schengen countries .The insurance has to cover at least 30,000 Euros for all risks e.g. accident, illness, medical emergency evacuation etc. The policy has to cover the entire duration of the trip including the date of arrival & departure
• Evidence of professional activity: – Employees: pay slips for the last three months, employment contract and employers statement on approval of holidays ;  Student: letter confirming enrolment in the college /university; Self -Employed : PAN registration and bank statements covering the last 3 months/company registration proof; Pension: Pension statement for the last three months or proof of regular income generated by ownership of property or business
• Proof of financial means – bank statements covering the last 3 months; Income tax declaration for the last two assessment years; If Sponsored: proof of sponsorship
• The consent of the parental authority or legal guardian should be required only if the minor travels alone or with one parent
• If you are traveling with someone – mention number and names of co-travelers
• An invitation letter from the host – if the invitee person is covering your costs in Sweden, you must show you have a family link (family book, birth certificate, etc.). You also need to show your host’s nationality & ID
• For conferences or training – confirmation of your enrolment and proof of payment of e nrolment fees

• A copy of your completed and signed application form

• Valid medical insurance with a cover of 30,000 pounds

In addition to all these experiences, there are some wonderful places to visit in Sweden ; these architectural marvels will leave you speechless. Documents Required for Sweden Visas:

You can apply for a visa to Sweden based on your time and purpose of visiting this Scandinavian country as they do not offer Visa-On-Arrival. You can fill in your application for a visa for Sweden from India as they have VFS centers. If you are from India, you need to have a Schengen Visa which can be obtained from the Visa Application Center for Schengen Visa. These are managed by VFS Global Services Private Limited.

Below are the Sweden visa requirements for Indian citizens:

• Fill out the Swedish Visa Application form on your computer accurately and in accordance with the information in the other documents. Don't forget to sign the form after printing it.
• Two photographs for a passport. The images must be the same and meet the Swedish visa application's photo specifications.

Your current passport is required and should meet these conditions:

• It must have two blank pages for the visa to be attached.
• It must be valid for at least three more months after the day you intend to depart Sweden and the entire Schengen region.
• If required, the duplication of your past visas.
• Sweden Health Insurance for Travel. a statement attesting to your possession of health insurance with a minimum coverage amount of €30,000 for Sweden and the entire Schengen region.
• Round-trip Flight Schedule. a flight booking confirmation for entering and leaving Sweden. The names, dates, and flight numbers should all be listed in this paper.
• Evidence of accommodation vide a hotel reservation in Sweden. Additionally, evidence of enough financial resources for the duration of the stay in Sweden. A foreigner who wishes to enter Swedish territory must be able to vouch for having 450 SEK ($48.26) for each day that they want to stay there.
• A cover letter which is a private letter outlining your reasons for applying.

Processing Time for Sweden Visa

After submitting your application, the processing time for a Sweden visa in India can go upto 10-15 days.

Sweden Visa Processing Fees

There is a non-refundable fee for Sweden visa fee for Indian citizens that each applicant must pay when applying for a Sweden visa. This cost varies depending on the visa type, the applicant's age, and a few other aspects listed below: -

• Adult tourists must pay €80 for a short-stay visa to Sweden.
• Children under the age of 12 will be charged €40.
• Children under the age of 6 years are exempted from any kind of visa fee.
• Students and teachers travelling for educational trips, family members of an EU/EEA national , researchers - all of these are exempted from the visa fee.

Applying for Sweden Visa for a Short Visit:

• Determine what type of Swedish visa you require. The kind of visa for Sweden from India you are applying for varies depending on your desired use for travelling.
• Check the location for the Sweden visa application.
• Complete the Swedish short-stay application for a visa. Since the embassy/consulate does not tolerate any errors or typos, try to be as precise as possible.
• Gather the necessities for a visa to Sweden.
• Request a visa interview time. You can do that online in some countries, but you must schedule the interview in person in others.
• Show up for the interview at the relevant Swedish embassy, consulate, or VFS.

Visitor Visa Requirements

The following extra paperwork is required when applying for a visa to visit friends or family in Sweden:

• Travel schedule. A thorough daily itinerary for your trip to Sweden.
• The invitation letter from a friend or relative who lives in Sweden, encouraging you to travel with them.
• ID of the host.
• a copy of the tenant's residency permit if they are not an EU citizen.
• Evidence of kinship certification attesting to your and the host's shared family ties (if applicable).
• evidence of the host's financial capacity. If the host is covering your expenses while you're in Sweden, they should provide you with one of the following:
• 3 months' worth of pay stubs and pension statements
• 3 months of bank statements.

Business Visa Requirements

The following extra documents are required when requesting a Swedish business visa:

• Letter of invitation from the Swedish company you will be visiting, including the company's complete address and the dates of your visit.
• from your employer, in writing. You should explain your motivations for visiting Sweden in your letter.
• Bank statement for a business. Ideally, for the previous six months.
• Assurance regarding costs Either the employer or the partner company must provide a covering of expenses on the letter or invitation with regard to the applicant's costs throughout their stay in Sweden.
• Proof of a business link between your company and the inviting company, such as communication or orders.

Students Visa Requirements

The following supplementary documents, as they pertain to your case, must be submitted with your application for a Swedish student visa:

• No letter of protest from the institution of higher learning where you are currently enrolled.
• student identification cards or enrollment certificates from the institution.
• Internship contract. signed by the trainee, the company in Sweden, and the place of origin.
• Certificate indicating enrollment or admittance to a school for the purpose of taking academic or professional courses.
• From the inviting company's cover letter.

Tourist Visa Requirements

The following extra paperwork is required when applying for a tourist visa for Sweden from India:

• Travel schedule. Give a day-by-day account of your travels.
• Evidence of your plans to pay for your trip to Sweden.
• A document from the travel company attesting to the booking of an organized tour, if required.

Indian nationals planning to visit Sweden for leisure require a Schengen tourist visa.

This guide will walk you through all the essential information about obtaining a Sweden tourist visa from India.

What Is The Sweden Tourist Visa?

The visa you need to apply for is the Schengen short-stay visa, also known as a Type C visa. This visa permits the holder to stay in the Schengen area, which includes Sweden, for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Eligibility Criteria

Application Process

Step 1 – Determine When to Apply: You can submit your application no earlier than six months before your intended travel date. The recommended application period is at least 15 working days before you plan to travel.

Step 2 – Complete the Application Form: Fill out the application form for a Schengen visa. The form can be found on the official website of the Swedish Migration Agency or at the Swedish embassy or consulate in India.

Government of India has not authorized any agent or intermediary to charge any fee for facilitation of any category of e-visa / regular or emergency visa. For travel to India an e-visa / regular visa along with passport is mandatory. Only applicants from countries exempted under bilateral arrangements may not need a visa to travel to India.

All applicants are requested not to deal with other websites that do not belong to the Government of India. Embassy of India does not have any role in issue of e-Visa as it is issued directly from New Delhi. Its confirmation or otherwise will come to you in your e-mail. Kindly take a print out of the confirmation while traveling to India.

Those traveling to India are also advised to go through instructions available on the website of Bureau of Immigration at https://boi.gov.in

Important information on e-Visa

It has been noticed that many fake websites have cropped up offering Indian e-Visa to foreign nationals. All are advised not to visit / make any payment through fake websites for applying Indian e-Visa. Indian Embassy / Government of Indian will not be responsible for payments made to these fake websites. The Correct website is www.indianvisaonline.gov.in / .

The web-page also guides the applicants on filling up the application form and provides sub-links ( https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html ) with information related to “Instructions to Applicants” and “List of Countries / Nationalities who are eligible to avail e-Visa.”

Two important requirements for entry into India upon receipt of Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is that

(i) the passport of the traveler should have validity of at least six months from date of arrival in India and it should contain at least two blank pages for stamping by the Immigration Officer.

(ii) The applicant must travel on the Passport on which he has applied for e-Visa. Entry will be allowed into India on the new passport even if ETA has been issued on the old passport, however in such cases a traveler must carry the old passport on which ETA was issued.
