Sat in an East bound two lane creeping queue near Abergwyngregyn. Website says no delays. So, now late for an appointment on Wirral. Not helpful.

We’ve got appointment in Walton Hospital checked travel info for A55 it says no delays but we’re stuck in a queue miles long. Need to get their act together or don’t bother having the app. So annoying 😡

A55 Between J 24 and 25 Eastbound, plastic cannister in middle of road. Traffic hazard.

A55 Roadworks

The following roadworks have been reported by various highways agencies and official transport sources.Click on a roadworks item to view more details on the traffic map.

The A55 is a major road in the UK running from Chester in the North West to Bangor in North Wales. It is a vital part of the North Wales Expressway, and serves as a direct connection between North Wales and all the major cities in the North West.

The A55 has been an important part of the road network in North Wales since 1959, when it opened as the North Wales Expressway. At first, the road was just a single-carriageway, but it was soon widened in stages to dual carriageway, and then in some sections to an all-purpose motorway. It was completed in 1978, when the final sections were finished.

The busiest times on the A55 are during peak hours on weekdays, when traffic is busy travelling to and from North Wales, particularly the cities and towns along the North Wales coast. Traffic is also generally heavier during holiday periods, when the road is often used by holidaymakers heading to North Wales.

The A55 has a good safety record, and accidents on the A55 are rare. In 2018, there were only five fatalities on the road. Since then, the Welsh Government has invested heavily in further improving road safety along the A55, with speed restrictions and extra signage at certain points, making it one of the safest roads in the UK.

I reviewed the Samsung Galaxy A55. It didn’t go as expected

Andy Boxall

“The Samsung Galaxy A55 returns long battery life and strong performance, which, combined with its reliable software, makes it a great everyday smartphone.”
  • Two-day battery life
  • Big screen is great for media
  • Metal and glass design looks modern
  • Long software commitment
  • Uncomfortable to hold
  • No wireless charging
  • Wired charging is slower than the competition

I feared the worst on my first day with the Samsung Galaxy A55 . It just didn’t feel quite right , and it made me worry about my time with the phone. After  liking its predecessor , I didn’t want it to be a disappointment.

Samsung Galaxy A55: design

Samsung galaxy a55: software and performance, samsung galaxy a55: screen and media, samsung galaxy a55: camera, samsung galaxy a55: battery life and charging, samsung galaxy a55: price and availability, samsung galaxy a55: verdict.

I’m now a few weeks into living with the phone, and things have definitely changed for the better. In fact, my time with the Galaxy A55 will have a far more positive ending than I first thought it would. But just how good is the Galaxy A55, and can it take on the wealth of other great affordable phones released recently?

  • Best Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 deals: Grab the foldable phone for $700
  • Samsung has a new (and cheaper) way to buy the Galaxy S23
  • Best Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 deals: Get the foldable for free

I’m going to come back to the key aspects that have changed for the better with the Galaxy A55, but first, let’s talk about the one thing that hasn’t (because it can’t), and that’s the in-hand feel. This is different from the phone’s design, which is modern-looking and really stylish. But in what I assume to be its quest to make the Galaxy A55 look like an iPhone 15 , Samsung has made a phone that’s unforgivingly sharp and irritatingly slippery.

The flat Gorilla Glass Victus+ rear panel returns almost no grip at all, and not even the three raised cameras can usually save it from slowly but surely sliding off many surfaces. It’s reason one for putting a grippy case on the Galaxy A55, and reason two is it’s quite uncomfortable to hold for more than a short time. The metal chassis meets the glass front and rear at a sharp angle, and you really feel it against your palm and fingers. It’s not a very pleasant phone to hold, unlike the curvier Galaxy A54.

It’s a shame, as the Galaxy A55’s overall design is an upgrade over the Galaxy A54, with a lovely textured, brushed effect along the metal chassis, and a contrasting polished section around the volume and power buttons. There is a wide choice of colors, and the Awesome Navy seen in our photos is a nice alternative to the usual, boring black. It also means you don’t have to go overboard by choosing the Awesome Lilac or Awesome Lemon alternatives for a bit of visual interest. Oh, and Samsung really does prefix its A55 color names with the word awesome .

The phone is manageable at 213 grams, thin at 8.2mm, and the IP67 water and dust resistance gives you confidence. I’ve used the phone without a case for more than a week, where it has spent time in and out of bags, and it shows no signs of wear or scratches on the metal chassis or the glass rear panel. The Galaxy A55 looks great, it’s as well-made as you’d expect, and it should prove durable, too. It’s just a shame the thing just isn’t very nice to hold, and has gained a little weight over the Galaxy A54.

While Samsung can’t do anything about the Galaxy A55’s design now, what about the software and performance? These were the other areas of concern I had when I first started using the phone, and it appears the A55 needed at least a day to sort itself out because the slowness, stutters, and performance concerns I had for the first 24 hours disappeared on the second day, as the phone settled down into everyday life.

The in-display fingerprint sensor does require a beat longer to activate than on some other phones, such as the OnePlus 12 , but it hasn’t failed to recognize my fingerprint and is far more reliable than on the first day. Using the phone’s menus, apps, and other standard features is now smooth and stutter-free. The early signs of frustration due to performance issues did not become an ongoing problem, but it’s clear the Samsung Exynos 1480 chip takes its time sorting things out internally after setup.

The Quick Settings screen on the Samsung Galaxy A55.

Installed is Android 14 with Samsung’s One UI 6.1, but there are none of the Galaxy AI features you find on the Galaxy S24 series. Samsung promises the phone will receive four version updates, and security updates for the next five years. The commitment isn’t as long as the one for S series devices, but still very good for a phone at this price. I’ve been using the phone in the UK on 4G, 5G, and Wi-Fi, and I have experienced no problems with connection, with calls being clear and reliable.

I’m very familiar with One UI and find it natural and logical to use, but it does need quite a lot of initial setup. This ranges from selecting gesture controls (it’s 2024, Samsung; I don’t want to use Android buttons anymore) to activating the always-on screen, changing the obnoxious default ring and notification tones, switching from the needlessly massive 4×4 home screen app layout to something more modern, and abandoning Samsung’s poor keyboard for Google’s Gboard. Get past this and it then requires little upkeep, outside of a few occasional notifications about system activity.

Samsung’s Exynos processors don’t have the best reputation, and the A-series phones are notorious for having thick bezels around the screen. What’s the situation with the Galaxy A55, seeing as it has both these “afflictions?” The 6.6-inch Super AMOLED screen is 0.2-inches bigger than the Galaxy A54’s screen, but shares the same 2340 x 1080 pixel resolution. However, to my eyes, the drop in pixel density hasn’t resulted in a visible decrease in quality.

It’s bright and easily seen outdoors, the 120Hz refresh rate keeps it smooth and easy on the eyes, and it looks great playing games and watching videos. Yes, the bezels around it are thicker than on some more expensive smartphones, but never once have they detracted from what is a big, vibrant screen on an affordable phone. The stereo speakers are loud, but not all that controlled and are harsh when you crank up the volume. Keep it at a moderate level, and they’re fine for music and games.

I’ve used the Galaxy A55 as my main smartphone, so it has to deal with all of my usual tasks. I haven’t found the Exynos 1480 chip with 8GB of RAM slow or unrefined at all outside of the longer-than-expected run-in period. In fact, it has been excellent. Asphalt 9: Legends is fast and smooth, with no obvious or game-ruining slowdown, and the phone doesn’t even get warm when playing for an extended period of time, suggesting Samsung has worked hard on cooling. The combination of the high refresh rate screen and fast processor means the Galaxy A55 has never become frustrating to use each day, no matter what I’ve been doing.

If you’re expecting a huge camera update over the Galaxy A54, then prepare yourself for disappointment. The hardware appears to be identical, with a 50-megapixel main camera leading the stack, joined by a 12MP wide-angle camera and a 5MP macro camera. Set at the top of the screen is a 32MP selfie camera. All this matches the specs of its predecessor. The changes come in the software, such as the addition of Super HDR for video and other performance improvements around lowlight photography and portrait shots.

Provided you don’t expect a Galaxy S24 Ultra -level photographic experience, the Galaxy A55’s main camera can deliver colorful, dynamic photos in daylight and is surprisingly capable at night too, meaning it takes photos you’ll want to share on social media in most environments. The best thing to do is not expect anything more than that, as when you get critical, there are more than a few disappointments here.

A photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy A55's main camera.

The wide-angle camera isn’t very good, with a lack of detail and quite a lot of noise and smoothing in its photos, and while the look can be consistent with the main camera, these issues really detract from the final shot. In overcast or difficult lighting conditions, both the main and wide cameras can struggle with exposure and noise, while in harsh lighting, colors can appear odd and unnatural. The selfie camera’s portrait mode is surprisingly unreliable too, cutting off ears and glasses despite claimed advances.

Calling a camera great for social media is damning with faint praise, but unfortunately, that’s how I feel about the Galaxy A55. It can take fun photos, and they’ll attract the right attention when you share them, but it can also mess things up quite badly. It’s not a step forward over the Galaxy A54, and is far from meeting the challenge from the OnePlus 12R, the Google Pixel 8, and even the Nothing Phone 2.

Samsung claims the Galaxy A55’s 5,000mAh battery will last for two days on a single charge, and although this is true, it does depend on how you use the phone. The A55’s battery impressively powers about six hours of screen time per charge, and I have indeed squeezed two days life from the phone when my screen time is below three hours per day.

Efficiency seems to be up compared to the Galaxy A54, with a 30-minute session of Asphalt 9: Legends draining around 7% of the battery, while the same amount of time watching a 1440p YouTube video consumes only about 3%. The Galaxy A55 has strong battery life, but when it’s time to put some more juice in the battery, you’ll have to reach for a cable. Disappointingly, the Galaxy A55 does not have wireless charging. While it’s not an essential feature, it does feel quite tight on Samsung’s part to not include it here.

The A55’s battery impressively powers about six hours of screen time per charge.

There’s no such thing as fast charging either, as the wired option tops out at 25 watts, which is rather poor next to the OnePlus 12R’s 80W (or 100W if you live outside the U.S.) charging. It can’t match that phone’s 30-minute total recharge time, and using a compatible Anker charger, it took 30 minutes to reach 50% and 1 hour and 25 minutes to reach 100%. You do not get a charger in the box, so you will have to purchase a compatible one to get the fastest possible charge times. There’s nothing wrong with the Galaxy A55’s battery life at all, but the charging speed and lack of wireless charging are a disappointment.

Samsung has decided not to release the Galaxy A55 in the U.S. at this time and will instead launch its cheaper sibling, the Galaxy A35 . The Galaxy A55 is available in the U.K. and other regions now, where it costs 439 British pounds, or about $547. This is slightly cheaper than the Galaxy A54’s launch price.

What else can you get for around $500? The Google Pixel 7a and the upcoming Pixel 8a are better choices if you value the camera, while the OnePlus 12R has very fast charging and a good camera too. The Nothing Phone 2 , or the Nothing Phone 2a if you want to save some money, are uniquely styled and very capable.

But if you really want a Samsung phone and don’t want to pay $800 for the Galaxy S24 , the $600 Galaxy S23 FE is well worth investigating, as it has a considerably more high-end feel than the Galaxy A55, along with desirable features like wireless charging and a more versatile camera. If you own a Galaxy A54 and are wondering if you should upgrade to an A55, it’s probably not worth doing so, although the battery life has improved.

Thankfully, my rocky start with the Samsung Galaxy A55 didn’t continue, but does that mean it has transformed into a highly desirable, must-buy phone? Not quite , but it’s certainly not one to be dismissed. While it has been a very good phone to live with, it’s not a big update over the Galaxy A54 at all, and there’s a lot of strong competition around it. It is let down by the sharp, angled design, which is aesthetically pleasing, but horrid to hold for long periods.

This aside, the Galaxy A55 has long battery life, a great screen, and enough performance to crush all everyday tasks. The camera isn’t the best you can get for this price, though, and the lack of wireless charging is frustrating. It’s a good phone, just not an outstanding one, but I’ve happily lived with it and haven’t been desperate to swap my SIM out of it. That’s always a good sign, by the way.

The Galaxy A55 is a safe and sensible purchase, helped by the device’s solid software, durability, and multiyear update commitment. However, it’s not very exciting or the best value in Samsung’s range. That honor goes to the Galaxy S23 FE, which is a lot more phone for not a lot more money. The Samsung Galaxy A55 is a recommended phone to buy, but not emphatically so.

Samsung started rolling out its One UI 6.1 update last week, bringing its Galaxy AI features to the Galaxy S23 series and other Galaxy phones and tablets. Unfortunately, it looks like the update is doing more harm than good.

Over the last couple of days, there have been seemingly endless reports of One UI 6.1 wreaking havoc for Galaxy S23 owners — including everything from unresponsive touchscreens, fingerprint sensors not working, and more.

During a speech about federal investments in semiconductor manufacturing, Mr. Biden again trolled Republicans who voted against or criticized his CHIPS act. “My predecessor and his MAGA Republican friends have a very different view,” Mr. Biden said, as he celebrated $6.1 billion grant for Micron. Referring to Representatives Brandon Williams and Elise Stefanik, Biden said, “I guess they’re not going to be here today to celebrate.”

President Biden is preparing to deliver a speech celebrating $6.1 billion in grants to Micron Technology, the latest federal award to bolster semiconductors. “It’s going to have a gigantic impact,” Biden said. As he entered the science and technology museum where he will speak here in Syracuse, a group of about 100 pro-Palestinian protesters across the street chanted “ceasefire now!”

Five Republicans and three Democrats submitted signatures to the state of Michigan to try to qualify for their party primaries on Aug, 6 for the state's open U.S. Senate seat. G.O.P. petition filers included a trio of former House members: Mike Rogers, Peter Meijer and Justin Amash. The Democrats included Representative Elissa Slotkin and the actor Hill Harper.

Federal filings show that Christina Bobb was paid $5,288.82 on March 29 by the R.N.C., which provided a statement from Steven Cheung, a Trump campaign spokesman, in response to questions about her status. Mr. Cheung said Ms. Bobb’s indictment in Arizona was another example of Democrats’ weaponization of the justice system. “The Democrat platform for 2024: if you can’t beat them, try to throw them in jail.”

One name to watch in the Arizona election indictment is Christina Bobb, a right-wing former lawyer for Donald Trump whom the R.N.C. hired as a senior election counsel. “This tells you all you need to know about today’s Republican National Committee,” Liz Cheney wrote on X , “The person in charge of election integrity for the @GOP was just indicted in Arizona for a lack of election integrity.”

North Carolina’s elections board said Thursday that felons who have not completed their sentences remain ineligible to vote, including parolees and those on probation and supervised release. It attempted to clarify their status after a federal judge on Monday blocked the state from enforcing an 1877 law, one criticized as discriminatory, that made it a crime for offenders who voted without knowing about the ban.

Donald Trump made a campaign stop this morning at a construction site in Manhattan, where he shook hands with union members. The brief visit, meant to highlight Trump’s criticism of Biden’s economic policies, exemplifies how his campaign intends to balance his court schedule with stops in media-heavy New York City that help him broadcast his national message.

Several lawyers and advisers to former President Donald J. Trump, including Rudolph W. Giuliani and Mark Meadows, were indicted in Arizona on Wednesday in connection with efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Trump was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the case, as well as in a similar case in Michigan .

Donald Trump’s legal team will argue to the Supreme Court this morning that he can’t be prosecuted because former presidents have “absolute immunity” from criminal charges for acts they took in office. Trump’s campaign, meanwhile, sent out a fund-raising email last night titled “Put Biden on Trial,” saying, “CROOKED JOE DESERVES LIFE IN PRISON!”

Watchdog group accuses the Trump campaign of violating finance law.

A campaign watchdog group filed a formal complaint to the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday accusing Donald J. Trump’s presidential campaign and related political committees of concealing payments of $7.2 million in legal fees by paying them through an unrelated shell company in violation of campaign finance law.

At the center of the complaint , from the Campaign Legal Center, is the company that received the payments, Red Curve. The company is run by Bradley Crate, who is also the treasurer for the Trump campaign and four related political committees listed in the complaint, as well as for 200 other candidates and committees.

In its complaint, the Campaign Legal Center said that the Trump political committees had used Red Curve, which did not appear to offer legal services, “as a conduit to conceal payments for legal services.” The group filed its complaint hours after The Daily Beast published an article about the payments to Red Curve.

Neither Red Curve nor representatives of the Trump campaign responded to a request for comment.

“This apparent payment scheme, however, violates the reporting requirements of the Federal Election Campaign Act,” the complaint said, “which requires that committees provide detailed information about who they are paying for services, and how much they are paying for those services.”

The complaint also said that Red Curve advanced payments for the legal costs to the Trump committees as part of the payment scheme, potentially violating a campaign finance law that prevents corporations from giving money to candidates.

“What Red Curve was doing was basically making a contribution," said Saurav Ghosh, the director of federal campaign finance reform at the Campaign Legal Center. “If it’s treated as a corporation under federal campaign finance law, then that’s illegal on its face.”

He added: “If, alternatively, it’s an unincorporated entity for campaign finance purposes, then the contributions would be in excess” of the amount permitted by federal law.

Mr. Trump has spent more than $100 million on lawyers and other legal costs since he left office in 2021, relying almost entirely on political donations to cover those expenses. Red Curve was the largest single recipient of those payments, receiving $7.2 million, according to records filed to the F.E.C.

The F.E.C. also on Wednesday fined a pro-Trump super PAC $6,075 in a negotiated settlement for failing to disclose $150,600 in in-kind contributions in an April 2022 quarterly report. The super PAC — Make America Great Again, Again — was once a leading fund-raising group for Mr. Trump. It fell under scrutiny last year for an unusual payment of $155,000 to Melania Trump , Mr. Trump’s wife, for a speaking engagement.

The Trump campaign did not respond to questions about the fine.

In its complaint concerning Red Curve, the Campaign Legal Center cited what it said were similar violations of campaign finance law. The watchdog group noted the use of a law firm by Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee in 2016 that made payments to the firm Fusion GPS to conduct research against Mr. Trump — research that was used in what became known as the Steele dossier . The Clinton campaign and the D.N.C. agreed to pay $113,000 in fines to settle an F.E.C. investigation into campaign spending disclosures.

“It’s similar to this situation,” Mr. Ghosh said of the Fusion GPS case. “In that there was, you know, a lack of transparency about who’s getting paid. What is the payment for?”

Trump again compares campus protests to the violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville.

Former President Donald J. Trump emerged from his felony criminal trial in New York on Thursday and again minimized the violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017 while portraying a recent wave of predominantly peaceful pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses as characterized by “tremendous hate.”

One woman was killed and nearly 40 people were injured when an avowed neo-Nazi plowed his car through a crowd of counterprotesters during violent clashes in Charlottesville. Earlier, hundreds of white supremacists had marched through the city, carrying torches and chanting, “Jews will not replace us.”

The current campus protests, while resulting in hundreds of arrests , have had no reports of significant violence.

But standing outside a Manhattan courthouse on Thursday, Mr. Trump said, “Charlottesville was a little peanut and was nothing compared — and the hate wasn’t the kind of hate that you have here. This is tremendous hate.” Of President Biden, he added, “We have a man that can’t talk about it because he doesn’t understand it.”

Andrew Bates, a spokesman for the White House, said in a statement that “minimizing the antisemitic and white supremacist poison displayed in Charlottesville is repugnant and divisive.” He added: “That moment compelled President Biden to run in 2020, because he has fought antisemitism and hate his entire life.”

Mr. Trump had used that same characterization about Charlottesville only a day earlier in a post on his social media site. The former president diminished the violence at the far-right rally, calling it “like a ‘peanut’” compared with the campus protests against the war in Gaza, which he distorted as “riots and anti-Israel protests.”

Mr. Trump also in that post repeated an attack on President Biden, saying that he “HATES Israel and Hates the Jewish people,” while adding “the problem is that he HATES the Palestinians even more, and he just doesn’t know what to do!?!?” Mr. Trump has repeatedly insulted Jews who vote for Democrats and for Mr. Biden, saying that they hate their religion and Israel .

Representatives for the Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

Mr. Trump — who also presided over civil unrest set off by the murder of George Floyd by a police officer in May 2020 — sought to downplay a chapter of his presidency that garnered widespread outrage and criticism.

In Charlottesville’s aftermath, Mr. Trump repeatedly drew a moral equivalency between the white supremacists — who brandished swastikas, Confederate flags and “Trump/Pence” signs — and peaceful counterprotesters, asserting that there were “very fine people on both sides.”

Underpinning the Charlottesville gathering of neo-Nazis, antisemites and white supremacists was a racist conspiracy theory, called the great replacement theory, which says that elites, sometimes manipulated by Jews, seek to “replace” and disempower white Americans. The growing prominence of the theory in far-right circles has incited racist terror attacks across the world, including several mass shootings in the United States.

Mr. Biden has in recent months faced protests and opposition to his presidential campaign from Americans who are sympathetic to the plight of the Palestinians and angry at the United States for arming Israel in the fighting in Gaza. Mr. Trump’s social media post on Wednesday sought to portray many of these protesters as a riotous mob, while also seeking to stoke protesters’ anger by claiming that Mr. Biden hates the Palestinians.

Some of the campus demonstrations have included hate speech and expressions of support for Hamas, the militant group in Gaza that carried out attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, killing about 1,200 people. In response to those attacks, Israel has waged a war on Hamas in Gaza, killing more than 34,000 people, mostly women and children , according to the Gaza Health Ministry. This week Mr. Biden condemned demonstrations that he said veered into antisemitism, but he also expressed sympathy for the Palestinians.

“I condemn the antisemitic protests,” Mr. Biden told reporters on Monday. “I also condemn those who don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians.”

Biden was in Syracuse as Trump’s trial continued in Manhattan.

President Biden was in Syracuse, N.Y., today to promote investments from the CHIPS and Science Act and other economic policies enacted during his administration.

The reliably blue state is again the center of political attention during the 2024 presidential campaign, after Mr. Biden and former President Donald J. Trump crossed paths last month . But it is the first time that Mr. Biden has traveled to the state during the felony criminal trial of Mr. Trump, his Republican rival.

Mr. Trump’s trial in a Manhattan courthouse was in recess on Wednesday, and will pick back up today — most likely unfolding as Mr. Biden gives his speech in upstate New York, 250 miles away. Mr. Trump made a brief campaign stop early in the morning at a construction site in Manhattan.

It is a dynamic that will continue for at least several more weeks: While Mr. Biden campaigns across the country, Mr. Trump has often been in the Manhattan courtroom.

Mr. Trump has tried to make campaign stops outside of the courtroom, as he did Thursday morning, and on the weekends. But a rally that he had scheduled in North Carolina last weekend was called off because of weather.

And Mr. Trump’s legal troubles have only grown in recent days. On Wednesday, Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mark Meadows and a number of other Trump allies were indicted in Arizona for their role in a fake elector scheme in 2020 that sought to overturn the results of the election in that state. The indictment includes conspiracy, fraud and forgery charges, related to efforts by the defendants to change the 2020 election results.

Mr. Trump was also named an unindicted co-conspirator in the case.

On Wednesday evening, Mr. Trump weighed in on the growing pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses, distorting the mostly peaceful demonstrations as “riots” while downplaying the violence at a 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., saying that “Charlottesville is like a ‘peanut’” in comparison to the current student protests.

Mr. Trump, in the same social media post, accused Mr. Biden of hating Israel and Jewish people, even as Mr. Biden reaffirmed his commitment to Israel as “ironclad.” Mr. Trump has made similar accusations against Jews who vote for Democrats, saying that they hate Israel and their religion.

Trump makes a campaign stop in Manhattan before his trial resumes.

Hours before he was set to return to the courthouse for his criminal trial in Manhattan , former President Donald J. Trump started Thursday morning by visiting a construction site in a campaign stop that exemplified the balancing act required for a candidate who is also a criminal defendant.

In the shadow of what will eventually be the 70-story headquarters of one of the nation’s biggest banks, Mr. Trump shook hands with union workers in a visit meant to highlight his support from working-class voters and draw attention to his criticism of President Biden’s economic policies.

His warm reception — a cheering crowd of roughly 100 people gathered behind him, chanting “we want Trump” — marked a stark contrast from the sober environment of the courthouse where Mr. Trump has spent most weekdays since his trial began last week, and where his comments have largely been limited to addressing reporters in the hallway during breaks.

Mr. Trump has not held a rally since just before the trial began, in part because a planned event in North Carolina last weekend was canceled because of weather. But his visit to the construction site typifies how his campaign is using retail stops in New York, a left-leaning state not expected to be in play in November, to help broadcast his national message.

“I have a lot of support here,” Mr. Trump said, as roughly two dozen workers clambered up scaffolding and equipment to catch a glimpse of him. Among those in the crowd were members of the Teamsters union, whose endorsement Mr. Trump has been courting.

The trip to the construction site kicks off what will be a significant day in Mr. Trump’s legal battles. In Manhattan, where Mr. Trump is accused of falsifying business records, David Pecker, the former publisher of The National Enquirer, is expected to return to the stand and detail the hush-money payment at the center of his case. Asked by reporters, Mr. Trump said that Mr. Pecker had been “very nice” and called him a “nice guy.”

In Washington, the Supreme Court will consider Mr. Trump’s argument that he is immune from prosecution on federal charges that he plotted to subvert the 2020 election. Mr. Trump, who will likely be in the Manhattan courtroom during the oral arguments before the Supreme Court, repeated an argument he has been making for months that “a president has to have immunity, otherwise you just have a ceremonial president.”

Mr. Trump’s appeal to working-class voters was key to his victory in 2016, and as he tries to return to the White House, he has been eager to win the support of rank-and-file union members and to drive a wedge between them and labor leaders who have long favored Democrats.

In January, Mr. Trump met with the Teamsters union’s executive board and said he believed he had a “good shot” at securing the influential union’s endorsement. The union endorsed Mr. Biden in 2020, and its leaders met with the president last month.

Mr. Biden has for years touted his allegiance to unions. On Wednesday he received the endorsement of the North America’s Building Trades Unions, an umbrella group whose leaders pointed to Mr. Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure package.

Jason Miller, a senior Trump campaign adviser, said that Thursday’s visit had been “on the books for some time” and was part of the campaign’s larger strategy to contend with the scheduling challenges posed by the Manhattan trial.

“Since the Biden Trials are an attempt to keep us off the campaign trail, we’ll bring the campaign trail to us,” he said. Mr. Trump has said without citing evidence that the charges are part of an “election interference” scheme orchestrated by Mr. Biden.

Israeli war cabinet resumes hostage deal discussions, official says

The trip, which follows an Israeli war cabinet meeting Thursday to discuss hostage deal negotiations, signals a resumption of efforts to broker a deal after months of failed talks . Open seating no more? Southwest CEO says airline is weighing cabin changes

Southwest Airlines  is considering changes to its single-class, open-seating cabins to drive up revenue, CEO Bob Jordan told CNBC on Thursday, a shift that could be among the largest in the airline’s history.

“We’re looking into new initiatives, things like the way we seat and board our aircraft,” Jordan said in an interview after the carrier’s  disappointing first-quarter report.

Southwest’s all- Boeing  737 fleet has a single economy class cabin and no seating assignments, though it does offer earlier boarding for a fee so customers can snag their preferred seats. The airline has focused on keeping its product simple and user-friendly for years, aiming to keep its own costs and complexity to a minimum.

Meanwhile, rivals including  Delta  and  United  have touted high revenue growth for premium seating such as business class and  strong upsell rates .

Analysts have repeatedly asked Southwest about opportunities for premium seating or additional fees. (The airline doesn’t charge travelers for their first two checked bags.)

Most U.S. airlines charge travelers to choose many of its seats in advance, even those that don’t come with extra legroom. Eight U.S. carriers —  Alaska ,  Allegiant ,  American , Delta,  Frontier ,  JetBlue ,  Spirit  and United — together brought in $4.2 billion from seating fees in their domestic networks in 2022, according to Jay Sorensen, an airline ancillary revenue expert at IdeaWorksCompany.

Jordan said no decisions have been made on what kind of changes Southwest will ultimately make, but he said studies have yielded “interesting” results.

“Customer preferences do change over time,” Jordan said.

While details were scarce during Southwest’s earnings call, when asked whether Southwest would consider a separated cabin on its planes, Ryan Green, the carrier’s chief commercial officer said: “Curtains and things like that are a bit far afield from what Southwest Airlines is.”

Green added that the carrier is not considering charging for checked bags because “people choose Southwest Airlines because we don’t have bag fees.”

Pro-Palestinian protests continue at colleges across the US

By Dalia Faheid, Nouran Salahieh and Tori B. Powell

Universities are cracking down after months of student protests over Israel’s bombardment of Gaza

From CNN's Dakin Andone

With tension mounting over an encampment in support of Palestinians at  New York’s Columbia University , police strode onto campus this month and arrested more than 100 demonstrators.

Soon, dozens more students protesting the monthslong assault on Gaza were arrested at  New York and Yale  universities. At the  University of Texas at Austin , police in riot gear and on horseback moved to disperse a like-minded demonstration, while nearly 100 at the  University of Southern California  also got arrested. Then at  Emory University in Atlanta , law enforcement deployed pepper balls to break up a pro-Palestinian action, arresting 28, including several  professors . And at  Boston’s Emerson College , another 108 protesters were arrested, with four officers hurt.

While the latest run of arrests has commanded outsized attention, US colleges have been using law enforcement — along with academic suspensions and, for at least one school, expulsion — to try   to   rein in student demonstrations since  Hamas’ October attack on Israel  left more than 1,200 dead and dozens taken hostage. Israel’s devastating counterpunch in Gaza – with more than 34,000 Palestinians killed, according to its health ministry – has further fueled deeply held views of students and faculty on all sides.

Amid US students’ broad insistence their tactics are peaceful, administrators often have decried campus protests as disruptive, with some — including at  Indiana University,   George Washington University  and  California State Polytechnic  University’s Humboldt campus — employing school rules governing use of public spaces to threaten or enact discipline, or call for police backup.

Administrators lately have seemed quicker to levy consequences against campus demonstrators than they were six months ago, according to Zach Greenberg of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. Read more about the crackdown here.

Vandalism reported at USC is "absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated," university says

People stand near a vandalized statue at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, on April 27.

The University of Southern California says campus property was vandalized Saturday "by individuals who are part of the group that has continued to illegally camp on our campus."

The Tommy Trojan statue and a fountain in Alumni Park were vandalized, the university said, without elaborating on the type of damage they sustained. University officials also did not state what led them to believe the perpetrators were among those taking part in encampment demonstrations.

Video footage from CNN affiliate  KABC  showed the words “Say No to Genocide” spray-painted on the base of the Tommy Trojan statue.

“Despite repeated warnings, this group has also continued to disrupt our campus operations and harass students and others, in violation of numerous university policies,” Joel Curran, senior vice president of communications, said in a statement.

"While the university fully supports freedom of expression, these acts of vandalism and harassment are absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated," Curran said.

University President Carol Folt has made attempts to meet with students, “but they have declined these offers,” Curran said.

“We are hoping for a more reasonable response Sunday before we are forced to take further action,” he said. “This area is needed for commencement set up early this week.”

Remember: Demonstrators at universities across the country have organized in protest of Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza , in many cases calling on the schools to disinvest from Israeli institutions and other entities they say benefit from the war.

A USC professor who has criticized the school's response to protests told CNN on Saturday that the university's decision to cancel its Muslim valedictorian's commencement speech , citing safety concerns, served as a catalyst for demonstrations at the Los Angeles campus.

This post has been updated with additional information about the protests at USC.

Dozens of police cars surround University of Southern California campus, video shows

KABC

Dozens of police cars lined the streets as a large group of officers swarmed the University of Southern California Saturday night, video from CNN affiliate KABC  shows.

The Los Angeles Police Department issued a "tactical alert" Saturday amid the pro-Palestinian protest at USC,  CNN affiliate KCBS reported. No arrests had been reported as of early Sunday and it's unclear what prompted the move.

The university posted a message  on social media  Friday night that said the University Park campus will be temporarily closed due to a "disturbance."

USC has served as the backdrop of demonstrations tied to the school’s valedictorian speech cancellation and as part of the nationwide campus pro-Palestinian protests.

Arizona State University Police arrested 72 people, including 15 students, university says

Arizona State University Police arrested 72 people, 15 of whom are students, on Friday in connection to an encampment on campus, university officials said Saturday.

“ASU Police arrested 72 people for trespassing after they set up an unauthorized encampment Friday, in violation of university policy,” the university said in a  media release.  “Encampments are prohibited on Arizona State University property. Lawful demonstrations can take place except overnight between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m."

Of the 72 people arrested and charged with criminal trespass, "about 80 percent of those arrested were not students," the release said.

“A group of people – most of whom were not ASU students, faculty or staff – created an encampment and demonstration that continued until well past 11 p.m. when the group was instructed repeatedly to disperse,” the media release said. “Individuals who refused to leave after numerous warnings were arrested and charged with criminal trespass.”

“While the university will continue to be an environment that embraces freedom of speech, ASU’s first priority is to create a safe and secure environment that supports teaching and learning,” the university said in the release.

How are universities cracking down on a swell of tension months into pro-Palestinian protests?

Members of law enforcement and police officers intervene during a pro-Palestinian student protest at University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, on April 24.

With tension mounting over an encampment in support of Palestinians at New York’s Columbia University, police strode onto campus this month and arrested more than 100 demonstrators.

Soon, dozens more students protesting the monthslong assault on Gaza were arrested at  New York University and Yale University . At the  University of Texas at Austin , police in riot gear and on horseback moved to disperse a like-minded demonstration, while nearly 100 at the  University of Southern California  also got arrested. Then at  Emory University in Atlanta, law enforcement deployed pepper balls to break up a pro-Palestinian action, arresting 28, including several professors. And at Boston’s Emerson College , another 108 protesters were arrested, with four officers hurt.

On the cusp of the close of the academic year, university communities across the nation remain on edge, not only over flares of political action but also what response, if any, it might compel.

While the latest run of arrests has commanded outsized attention, US colleges have been using law enforcement – along with academic suspensions and, for at least one school, expulsion – to try   to   bring to heel student demonstrations since Hamas’ October attack on Israel left more than 1,200 dead and dozens taken hostage. Israel’s devastating counterpunch in Gaza – with more than 34,000 Palestinians killed, according to its health ministry – has further fueled deeply held views of students and faculty on all sides.

Amid US students’ broad insistence their tactics are peaceful, administrators often have decried campus protests as disruptive, with some – including at  Indiana University ,  George Washington University  and  California State Polytechnic   University ’s Humboldt campus – employing school rules governing use of public spaces to threaten or enact discipline or call for police backup.

Implicit in the crackdowns is a built-in tension of higher education: balancing the role of campuses as bastions of free speech while ensuring the safety of students, including those who are Jewish and have expressed  concern for their well-being  in the face of antisemitism that’s surged nationally since October 7 and has occasionally been seen at or near – or  conflated with  – pro-Palestinian campus demonstrations.

Administrators lately have seemed quicker to levy consequences against campus demonstrators than they were six months ago, according to Zach Greenberg of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression.

But, he said, calling in police carries risk.

It is a “drastic action” that “should be reserved for only the most direct and severe threats to campus safety,” Greenberg said. Further, doing so threatens to “erode” the trust between universities and students, who may see “police officers in riot gear arresting their classmates, maybe their professors.”

More than 80 arrested in Washington University demonstration, university says

More than 80 people were arrested at Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday amid ongoing Pro-Palestinian demonstrations, the university  said in a statement.

A group of demonstrators, which included students, employees and individuals not associated with the university, marched at multiple locations on campus where they “pitched tents, and indicated that they did not intend to leave,” the university said.

“It quickly became clear through the words and actions of this group that they did not have good intentions on our campus and that this demonstration had the potential to get out of control and become dangerous,” the university said.

“When the group began to set up a camp in violation of university policy, we made the decision to tell everyone present that they needed to leave,” the statement said. Dozens were arrested after they "refused to leave after being asked multiple times."

“All will face charges of trespassing and some may also be charged with resisting arrest and assault, including for injuries to police officers,” the university said. “We are firmly committed to free expression and allow ample opportunity for voices to be heard on our campus. However, we expect everyone to respect our policies and we will take swift action to enforce them to their fullest extent.”

Presidential candidate Jill Stein was among those arrested Saturday at the university, her campaign's communications director previously said, adding that “we are not aware of any charges at this time.”

University of Southern California temporarily closes campus to everyone except residents

The University of Southern California has closed its University Park campus temporarily, the school announced on Saturday night.

“Due to a disturbance, the University Park Campus is temporarily closed except for residents,” the university posted on X.

The university has been the backdrop to ongoing pro-Palestinian protests,  CNN has previously reported .

Some context: Nearly 100 people  were arrested after the university ordered protestors at the campus' Alumni Park to disperse Wednesday. Protesters are demanding “full amnesty” for those brought into custody and “no policing on campus.” This week, the university canceled its main stage commencement ceremony set for next month, after sparking criticism by canceling Asna Tabassum's valedictorian commencement speech.

Presidential candidate Jill Stein arrested at pro-Palestinian protest at Washington University

Jill Stein, 2024 Green Party presidential candidate, center, speaks with demonstrators during the March on Washington for Gaza rally in Washington, DC, on January 13, 2024.

Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein was arrested Saturday at a pro-Palestinian protest at Washington University in St. Louis, but “we are not aware of any charges at this time,” her campaign spokesperson said.

Stein was at the protest to support students who had set up an encampment and declared they would not leave until Washington University divested from Boeing and boycotted Israeli academic institutions, among other demands . In a video recorded prior to her arrest and posted to X , the Green Party candidate said she stood in support of the students and their constitutional free speech rights.

“We’re going to stand here in line with the students who are standing up for democracy, standing up for human rights, standing up to end genocide,” Stein said.

David Schwab, communications director for Jill Stein for President, said Stein had attempted to de-escalate the situation between protestors and police Saturday afternoon, but that the police “were not responsive” and began arrests shortly afterward.

“As Dr. Stein said, it's shameful that university administrations are condoning the use of force against their own students who are simply calling for peace, human rights, and an end to a genocide that the American people abhor,” Schwab said.

Stein’s campaign manager and deputy campaign manager were also arrested.

USC professor to CNN: University officials have failed students and faculty

From CNN’s Amanda Musa

University of Southern California administrators failed students and faculty who are encouraged by the institution to speak their minds, said  Mike Ananny , PHD, an associate professor of communications and journalism at USC who recently criticized university leaders over their handling of campus demonstrations.

On Thursday, Ananny wrote an open   letter appearing in the student publication, the  Daily Trojan , stating he no longer trusts the school's provost, Andrew Guzman, and its president, Carol Folt, after witnessing how they handled what he called peaceful protests, especially on Wednesday.

Nearly 100 people  were arrested after the university ordered protestors at the campus' Alumni Park to disperse, CNN previously reported.

“Peaceful protestors were at the university expressing their speech rights and doing all the things that we ask our students to do,” he said. “We want them to be engaged and passionate citizens who are taking care of their world.”

Ananny cited the university’s decision last week to cancel Asna Tabassum's valedictorian commencement speech due to safety concerns as the catalyst for the pro-Palestinian protests. This week, the university also canceled its main stage commencement ceremony set for next month – further dismantling trust between administrators and the university community, Ananny claims.

“The university needs to trust its students, trust its faculty to do the work that we know how to do,” he said. “We know how to have these conversations – let us have them.”

Ananny says he has not received a response from Folt to his open letter.
