For some of these day trips, you will need a set of wheels to get around. If you need to hire a car, I recommend checking out Discover Cars for competitive pricing across a large range of suppliers, plus they offer free cancellation.

Browse the best range of car hire options from Broome

Where tours provide transport (or have the option for it), I’ll include this in the details.

Join an Unforgettable Dinosaur Adventure Tour Cruise

This highly-rated adventure tour departs from Broome where you’ll join a small group on a boat to cruise the aquamarine waters of Roebuck Bay.

tours out of broome

You’ll be seeking out 120 million-year-old dinosaur tracks, fossilised on a secluded beach on this unique tour. You’ll spot wildlife galore as you cruise the bay and Dampier Creek, all the while sipping sparkling wine and enjoying some nibbles.

Check prices and booking information here.

This tour includes complimentary return transfers to your hotel.

Explore the Pindan Cliffs at James Price Point

James Price Point is located 1 hour out of Broome on the Dampier Peninsula. A popular free camping area, iconic for its magenta cliffs that hug the coastline.

There are no facilities in this pristine area, which is best for those wanting to swim, explore the coast or cast a line in a pristine natural location. Take a picnic lunch and explore the rugged area.

James Price Point

Getting to James Price Point requires a car. The road is sealed until you turn off Cape Leveque Rd onto Manari Rd. It is possible to visit James Price Point with a 2WD car, however, it will be more comfortable in a 4×4 as the road can be quite corrugated.

If there have been heavy rains, I wouldn’t recommend doing the trip in a 2WD.

Get your Thrill on at Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park

A short 20-minute drive out of Broome lies the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park. Home to over 2500 crocodiles , you’ll be enthralled from the moment you enter the giant (fibreglass!) crocodile mouth entrance of the park.

Open 7 days a week from 2-5 pm, with a daily crocodile feeding at 3 pm. When I visited, they had baby crocodiles that you could (safely) hold – I wasn’t game enough at the time!

If you require transport, you can book a package that includes hotel pick-up and drop-off.

  • Duration: 3 hours

Just up the road, you’ll find the Mango Place where they sell, yep you guessed it – all things mangoes! From mango smoothies, jams, ice cream and even soaps, it’s worth popping in for a refreshment in the beautiful tropical garden grounds.

Witness the Wonder of the Horizontal Falls

This is one of the most memorable Broome day tours on offer.

The mesmerising Horizontal Falls, described as “one of the world’s great natural wonders” by David Attenborough himself, is a unique natural phenomenon created by the strong tidal movements in the northwest.

tours out of broome

I won’t sugar coat it – it’s a pricey experience as it requires a charter flight.

However, after doing the tour myself, I’d say it’s worth every penny for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’ve spoken to other tourists who come to Broome just to see the Horizontal Falls!

This might be your last chance to partake in this bucket list experience, with the Western Australian government banning boat tours from going through the falls from 2026.

Rockpool Hunting at Coconut Wells

This is one of my favourite self drive day trips from Broome! 25 minutes out of Broome you’ll find Coconut Wells.

There is a large lagoon that fills with ocean water when there are high tides (9m+), Broome locals will make a day of it and come here to do “the float.” Read all about it in my guide here .

Another reason to explore Coconut Wells is the numerous rock pools that magically appear on the beach at low tide. They look the best from above, but it’s interesting to explore the many little nook and crannies of rock pools to be found.

You can drive directly out to the beach if you have a 4WD, otherwise park here and follow the sandy track on the right to the beach (it’s around a 15-minute walk).

Coconut Wells Broome

Explore Cape Leveque

Cape Leveque is found on the tip of the Dampier Peninsula. It’s no easy journey, being 200km (2.5 – 3 hours) from Broome to the tip but you’ll find a pristine coastline and undeveloped wilderness.

The road is now sealed all the way from Broome, which has made the 3-4 hour journey much more pleasant (and safer) in recent years.

Things to do and see in the area include Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, the famed Beagle Bay Church made of clam and pearl shells and the Arydloon Hatchery at the One Arm Point indigenous community.

tours out of broome

Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm

This small family-owned pearl farm is located on the tip of the Dampier Peninsula. Besides the popular Pearl Farm Tour , Cygnet Bay offers several other unique tours and experiences, including a waterfall reef scenic cruise that showcases the unique reefs and tides only found in the Kimberley.

Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm features an al fresco restaurant, and the only pool (an infinity one, at that!) found on the Dampier Peninsula.

  • Price: $ – $$
  • Duration: 1- 3 hours

Cape Leveque Tours

You can hop onto a full-day tour to see the highlights of Cape Leveque in one day, with all transport and planning taken care of.

This highly rated full-day experience departs Broome early in the morning to begin your adventurous day ahead. You will be travelling in a comfortable 4×4 coach to Beagle Bay for your first stop, with a visit to the pearl shell altar at the Sacred Heart Church.

tours out of broome

The tour then continues up the length of the cape, where you tour the hatchery and aquarium at One Arm Point. Lunchtime will be enjoyed at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, with a tour of the behind-the-scenes process of creating pearls.

There is also an option for a scenic flight to see the famed coastline from above on the way back to Broome or continue the journey on the 4WD bus. Click here for prices and to check availability.

  • Duration: full day

Cultural Tours

Cultural tours are available with local indigenous businesses.

I went on Brian Lee’s Tagalong Tour, where we learnt about the history of the region, and tales of the local indigenous Bardi people and went mud crabbing and spearfishing before cooking up some of our catches on an open fire on the beach.

tours out of broome

It was a brilliant and unique day tour, and Brian is an absolute legend. Other tours are available including Bundy’s Cultural Tours and Trevor’s Traditional Tours.

Read more about these tours here , including online booking.

  • Duration: 7 hours

Tour Willie Creek Pearl Farm

Head out of town and up the Dampier Peninsula on a Willie Creek Pearl Farm tour. You’ll gain a unique insight into the intriguing process of modern pearl farming – from shell to showroom.

tours out of broome

The Willie Creek Pearl Farm tours even include a boat ride out on the turquoise waters of Willie Creek to see live oysters suspended in the tides.

Drive yourself , get picked up by a coach in town or even fly in by helicopter – there are options for all budgets.

  • Price: $ – $$$

Marvel at Humpbacks on a Whale Watching Tour

Broome is known as the “ humpback highway ” for good reason, as over 35,000 humpback whales pass through each year in their annual migration. The best way to see these magnificent creatures up close is to join a whale-watching tour.

I can recommend this popular Whale Watching Sunset Cruise for an unforgettable experience in Broome. Whale sightings are guaranteed in July and August! (This seasonal tour runs from June to September).

On this five-star rated tour, you will enjoy a 4.5-hour sunset cruise onboard a sailing catamaran. You’ll have uninterrupted views and even be able to hear the whales with the onboard hydrophone.

The crew serve snacks and drinks, and will make sure you are well looked after the entire cruise. What better way to end a fantastic afternoon than sailing back to Broome with the setting sun behind you?

Transfers are included.

  • Duration: 4.5 hours

You can also check availability for a shorter day-time tour.

Spot a Snubfin Dolphin on an Eco Cruise

Broome is the only place in the world to see the Australian snubfin dolphin! These cute creatures can be described as “like a dolphin that’s run into a wall”

Since I enjoyed the whale watching tour so much, I went on a daytime snubfin dolphin eco cruise with Broome Whale Watching again.

tours out of broome

We spotted not only snubfin dolphins but also manta rays, sea snakes, and a turtle in Roebuck Bay. Tours include transport from your accommodation as well as morning or afternoon tea on board.

These tours are popular, so be sure to book in advance !

  • Duration: 4 hours

Soak in the Broome Sunset on a Seafood & Pearling Cruise

As you might be able to tell at this point, exploring Broome from the water is one of the best ways to experience Broome.

This indulgent sunset cruise allows you to do just that, whilst feasting on a 4-course dinner with optional beverages from the fully stocked bar on board.

You’ll admire the iconic Broome sunset while anchored off Cable Beach, topping off a wonderful ocean adventure.

There is also this option which provides light snacks canapes on a 4 hour sunset cruise.

  • Duration: 5.5 hours including transfers

Fly and Hike the Bungle Bungles

Another bucket list tour that allows you to explore one of WA’s iconic landmarks of the West Kimberley, the Bungle Bungle Range.

You’ll fly to Purnululu National Park , admiring the bee-like striped domes of the ranges from the sky.

Explore the remarkable Cathedral Gorge up close and other highlights of the park in an air-conditioned 4WD vehicle with a knowledgeable tour guide.

Relax at Eco Beach

Whilst Eco Beach Resort is best enjoyed as an overnight trip, the resort does welcome day trippers.

Enjoy a meal and drink at the restaurant overlooking the bay, stroll along the beach to explore the caves or participate in one of the many activities like kayaking offered by the Resort.

Just note that the infinity pool is for staying guests only.

Day trippers are recommended to call ahead to make sure the resort isn’t being used for private events before making the 1.5-hour drive from Broome.

It’s possible to do this trip as a self-drive day trip from Broome, or during peak season, Karma IV offers a full-day Eco Beach coastal cruise from Broome on their sailing catamaran.

Fly to Mitchell Falls

A West Kimberley bucket list destination is the remarkable Mitchell Falls.

Not many make it this far to see this remote attraction, but you’ll be spending your day on a fixed-wing charter plane exploring the best of the Australian Outback.

tours out of broome

This full-day tour includes a visit to an outback station, a flyover Horizontal Farms, a stop at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm plus breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea.

Go On a Bird Watching Adventure at Broome Bird Observatory

Fancy yourself a keen bird watcher, or interested to learn more about the 330+ bird species that call Broome home? Make your way to the Broome Bird Observatory , located on Crab Creek Rd on Roebuck Bay.

Tours on offer include a Shorebirds Tour, Mangrove Tour, Bush and Plains Tour and Lakes Tour. Either way, there is something for all nature lovers.

Return transfers can be booked by prior arrangement at a cost or drive yourself.

  • Duration: From 2.5 hours up to a full day

Try Your Hand at Mud Crabbing

Now this is a one-of-a-kind experience that you won’t see anywhere else in Western Australia! Jump on a catamaran and head to the mangroves with an experienced guide in search of mud crabs.

You’ll then get to enjoy the spoils of your labour as the crab meat as it is freshly cooked for you on board.

  • Duration: 5 hours

Hop Aboard a Fishing Charter

This one is for the avid fisherman (or, aspiring to be!). Join this family-friendly full-day fishing charter , even if you are just starting and want to learn more or are a keen fisherman already.

The tour includes all equipment, lunch and refreshments and return transfers.

Drive to Derby

Derby is a small outback town on the edge of the King Sound near Fitzroy River. It is possible to visit it as a day trip from Broome, taking about 2.5 hours by car on sealed roads.

Just before Derby, pull in at the Boab Prison Tree . This large, hollowed boab tree is over 1500 years old. As the name suggests, it has some morbid history as it was used as a prison or holding area for Aboriginal prisoners.

Nearby, visit the Mowanjum Art and Culture Centre to view and purchase artworks by the local indigenous tribes.

In Derby, the horseshoe jetty is the main tourist attraction. Walk along the pedestrian-only jetty and watch the tides change (fun fact: Derby has the highest tidal variations in Australia!).

For more ideas on what to do in Derby, read more here .

Final Thoughts on Broome Day Trips

That wraps up this guide with plenty of ideas for the best day trips, Broome and surrounds. There is so many exciting attractions and activities in and around Broome that no matter how you choose to spend your time, you’re sure to have a blast!

Pete, Your Tour Guide

I grew up in Albany,  South West of Western Australia. We lived in Perth for many years and travelled by road around Australia extensively, as a professional driver, clocking up literally hundreds of thousands of kilometres. Visiting Broome for the first time in 1975 for the Shinju Matsuri Festival of the Pearl and have returned every year since then.

I love the long drives experienced in the northern parts of Australia. We moved to Cairns and lived there for 6 years and finally settled in Broome in 2011 and I won’t budge from here, just love the lifestyle.

The Kimberley has a true mystique that captures you.

I love my job, showing my guests this magical part of the Kimberley. I have a genuine passion for the culture and history that has made Broome what it is today. 14 of the most incredible Broome tours

Kassia Byrnes

Native Content Editor

13 July 2023

Time

Drag yourself away from the beach for the day on a Broome tour and you’ll be rewarded with some truly amazing experiences.

This seaside country town might be small, but it has a mighty history and even mightier modern-day experiences. To really understand how it came to be – from its multi-cultural food scene to its wild pearling history – these Broome tours are a must.

Be sure to contact tour providers before you go, as tours can be very dependent on the weather and the seasons, thanks to rapidly changing tides.

1. Broome And Around Tours

First things first, get situated and familiar with Broome on a Panoramic Town Bus Tour with Broome and Around Tours. Do this right at the start of your trip to get all the local knowledge on where to eat, where to find local art, secret swimming spots and a good overview of the fascinating and brutal history of Broome.

2. Mabu Buru Broome Aboriginal Tours

Your second stop should be Mabu Buru Broome Aboriginal Tours for the Cable Beach Cultural Talk with local Yawuru, Karrajarri, Nyul Nyul, Bardi man, Johani. Meet on the famous Cable Beach where he will walk you through some local Indigenous history and customs, a song performance, and he’ll even help you find the hidden-in-plain-sight dinosaur footprints left in the rocks. More than a tour, however, this is a conversation during which Johani creates a safe space for asking, learning and sharing.

3. Red Sun Camels

Have you even been to Broome if you didn’t ride a camel? It may be an iconic tourist activity, but it’s also a whole lot of fun. There are multiple tour providers who will line up along the beach in the mornings and at sunset, but our pick is Red Sun Camels for their friendly staff, relaxing atmosphere and camels that are far less smelly than some others (trust me on this one).

4. Moontide Distillery Tour

While there are a million gorgeous views to stop at on tours around Broome, beverage aficionados will be pleased to know Moontide Distillery is leading the way in craft liquor, even boasting a few awards for their unique gin flavours – like The Pearler’s Gin, crafted with actual oyster mantle. Take a tour to see the behind-the-scenes action, or just have a tasting with nibbles.

5. Matso’s Brewery Tour

Speaking of craft brews, Matso’s Mango Beer is a staple on the taps of pubs around Western Australia, and it all started in Broome. A brewery and a restaurant, you can book in for a tour and then sit down to an award-winning lunch.

Treat yourself to a Mango beer at the end of your tour.

6. Broome Tours Mudcrabbing Adventure

To brag about catching your own dinner, you can join a Mud Crabbing Adventure with Broome Tours. Follow your guide through the mangroves of Roebuck Bay on a hunt for the prized Kimberley Mud Crab, then cook up your catch for the freshest of seafood lunches. Be prepared to get dirty as you leave the catamaran and wade in shallow water, and also be aware that this tour is weather dependent.

7. Broome Tours Sunset Cruise

Join Broome Tours for the mud crabbing, but stay for a Sunset Cruise along Cable Beach to catch the shoreline from a different perspective. Broome subsets have not been overhyped, and an unforgettable way to experience it is with a beverage in hand, being served snacks, while sitting on the back of a 42-foot catamaran.

The crew know many Broome tours require concentration, so they’re here to bring the chill vibes and relaxed fun – you can even go swimming in a boom net off the back of the boat (April to early October).

8. Salty Plum Social

Thanks to the unique immigration history in Broome, it’s an unexpected foodie haven. Locals are more than happy to offer up their favourites, but a Small Bar Walking Tour of Broome’s historic Chinatown with Salty Plum Social is the perfect way to hit all the best spots in one afternoon.

Eat, drink, walk and talk your way through the town, discovering the truly unique background of the area, stopping along the way for drinks and canapes.

9. Horizontal Falls

Described by David Attenborough as “one of the greatest natural wonders in the world”, the Horizontal Falls near Broome are caused by the rise and fall of the tides, as water rushes to get through two narrow gaps into the seas beyond.

Join Horizontal Falls Adventures to see this phenomenon from all angles – from your seaplane flight into Talbot Bay, to a jet boat ride through the falls themselves and even a swim with the Tawny Sharks that call this area home.

There’s a huge range of tour options, from day tours to the brand new luxury overnight epic during which you stay aboard The Jetwave Pearl and get to see this incredible part of The Kimberleys at all times of day.

10. Pearl Luggers Tour

If you don’t have time to visit Willie Creek Pearl Farm 38 kilometres north of Broome, you can still get an insight into the wild history of pearling in Broome on their Pearl Luggers Tour , located in Chinatown. Hold a pearl, taste pearl meat, hold original diving gear and even see a fully rigged and restored pearl lugger, originally built in 1903.

11. Broome Dinosaur Adventures

Before there were people in Broome, there were dinosaurs, and you can’t leave without discovering the evidence they left behind. Journey across Roebuck Bay with Broome Dinosaur Adventures’ Dinosaur Adventure Tour . Explore secluded bays, creek inlets and beaches to find 120 million-year-old dinosaur tracks, with cocktails, of course.

You’ll need a moderate level of fitness for the walking portions of this tour and be sure to pack your reef shoes. Tour dates depend on the tides.

12.  Greg Quicke’s Astro Tours

See far beyond Broome with Greg Quicke’s Astro Tours , which focus on what’s said to be some of the best stargazing skies on the planet. Using massive telescopes and lasers, guests will see planets, galaxies and moons visible from both the southern and northern hemispheres due to Broome’s proximity to the equator.

For two to three days a month between March and October, you may even get to see the phenomenal ‘Stairway To The Moon’, caused by a full moon’s reflection rising over the mudflats of Roebuck Bay.

13. Broome Trike Tours

Bikes and buses are nothing new; but a trike or better yet, being chauffeured in a limo trike is certainly unique. This is one of the options with Broome Trike Tours , which takes guests around the local area. Other tour options include meeting crocodiles at the Croc Feeding Tour at Malcolm Douglas Wildlife Park and taste-testing bush tucker .

14. Broome Aviation Tours

This is The Kimberleys for the time poor: Broome Aviation’s Gorgeous Gorges Tour is a full-day adventure – starting and ending in Broome – that encompasses the region’s must-dos, with scenic flights over gorges, waterfalls, red ranges and remote islands that make up the Buccaneer Archipelago.

But what makes this experience so special is the opportunity to travel on land too. Among the many stops is Windjana Gorge, home to the revered Johnstone River Crocodile and an ancient reef system that’s significant to geologists. Passengers can cool off with a swim at Bell Gorge waterfall.

Broome travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How can I get to Western Australia?

There are several ways to get to Western Australia including flying, catching public transport, and self-driving, with the most time-efficient one being different depending on where you're travelling from.

There are over 10 public airports you can fly into in Western Australia but the most popular one is Perth Airport. From there, it's easy to organise transportation to your final destination of either Margaret River or further inland.

When is the best time to visit Western Australia?

There's no one 'best time' to visit Western Australia as each season promises unique activities and breathtaking scenery.

The most popular time to visit is during the summer season (December, January, and February) as it coincides with Australia's school holidays and the weather is warm and sunny.

If you're wanting a holiday without the crowds, the months of March-May and September-October are the best times to visit as the weather is still reasonably warm and enjoyable, especially if you're spending long periods of time outside.

What should I pack for a tour in Western Australia?

Our Western Australian tours are all about action and adventure so there is no need to bring any fancy clothes. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are a must, even in winter, as the sun reflects off the water and the white sand of the Margaret River region and Ningaloo Reef.

Bring a good pair of walking shoes so you can explore the national parks comfortably. A light jumper is useful if you are going to be out on the water for lengthy periods of time.

What are the best places to visit in Western Australia?

Western Australia is full of stunning landscapes and special natural attractions so it's hard to fit them all into one list but we'll give it a go. Here are our picks on the best places to visit in Western Australia:

  • Rottnest Island
  • The Bungle Bungles
  • Ningaloo Reef

What kind of animals live in Western Australia?

There are plenty of animals to spot during your travels around Western Australia including 141 of Australia's 207 mammal species (25 of which are only found in WA).

Around 400 reptile species, and roughly 1,600 marine species.

Tick them off the list below as you go:

  • Bottlenose dolphins
  • Whale sharks
  • Australian sea lions

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
