The Ultimate Safari Vehicle | What Makes Our Toyota Land Cruiser Special?

toyota land cruiser safari vehicle

It's Entirely Private

All of our tours are private. The vehicle is yours and yours alone for the duration of your adventure with us. This means we can stick around and watch a lazy lion for hours or head back early for dinner. It's all up to you. 6 Spacious seats in the back cabin plus the captain and co-captain chair gives you loads of room to stretch out as you please.

Fully Equipped With Safety Features

Our guides perform a daily inspection of all safety features on the vehicle. This includes a bumper winch, multiple spare tires, first aid kits, car jacks, CB radios, extra fuel & water, and more. We take safety and preparations seriously so you can let all of your anxieties melt away.

Over The Top Comfort

Bluetooth audio to connect your personal music, custom seat covers thoroughly cleaned between trips, and Air Conditioning are some of the standard comfort features we have. An on-board electric refrigerator (top left) to keep your favorite food/beverages cold and several electrical outlets (bottom left) to keep your devices charged make you feel at home!

...And So Much More!

A pop-top roof for ideal game viewing. Butterfly open windows to make you feel that much more in tune with the wilderness around you. A built-in canopy for one of a kind bush picnics. (right) Stand up and feel the breeze in your hair as you race towards a fresh kill or kick back and take a nap on your way back to the lodge. This jeep is designed for you to use it as you prefer.

Don't Settle For One of These!

Too often, we see tourists packed in to a standard 4 wheel drive vehicle or an uncomfortable fully-open flat bed. Not only are these uncomfortable and open to the elements, they don't allow you to stand or have any of the amenities mentioned above. With Tohe, you'll ALWAYS be in the IDEAL, CLASSIC safari vehicle. Fully open-air game viewing when desired and fully enclosed when required.

Toyota land cruiser 79.

After much rigorous trial and testing we finally decided upon the 79 series as our across the board flagship vehicle. These vehicles offer us the rugged base from which to build our bespoke style of vehicle. We are incredibly happy with how they have turned out. They offer us the space, reliability and strength that we believe is necessary for our safaris. ‍ They make great vehicles for families of four or in extremis five (although please call us to discuss the logistics!). They easily hold 2 roof tents and if you are strict on personal luggage then we can sometimes squeeze in a ground tent too.

Why Toyota Land Cruisers Are the Ultimate Vehicles for African Safaris

Self Drive in Kenya

When it comes to embarking on an unforgettable African safari adventure, having a reliable and robust vehicle is paramount. Among the various options available, the Toyota Land Cruiser stands out as a legendary choice for traversing the diverse and challenging terrains of the African continent. Renowned for its exceptional off-road capabilities, durability, and comfort, the Toyota Land Cruiser has become the go-to vehicle for both safari enthusiasts, professional tour operators as well as travelers opting for Kenya car hire . In this article, we will explore the reasons why the Toyota Land Cruiser is considered the ultimate vehicle for African safaris.

Off-road Prowess:

African safaris often require navigating through rugged landscapes, including rocky trails, sandy dunes, and muddy terrains. The Toyota Land Cruiser has earned its reputation as an off-road champion, capable of conquering even the harshest conditions. With its robust body-on-frame construction, high ground clearance, and a powerful engine, the Land Cruiser can tackle steep inclines, deep water crossings, and challenging obstacles encountered in the wild, ensuring a smooth and reliable journey.

Reliability and Durability:

One of the most crucial factors for any safari vehicle is reliability. The vastness and remoteness of African wilderness demand a dependable vehicle that can withstand long hours of driving in demanding conditions. Toyota’s reputation for producing reliable vehicles is exemplified in the Land Cruiser. Built to last, these vehicles are known for their exceptional durability, able to withstand the rigors of constant use in harsh environments without compromising performance.

Spaciousness and Comfort:

African safaris often involve long hours on the road, making comfort a significant consideration. The Toyota Land Cruiser provides ample space for passengers and their belongings, ensuring a comfortable journey. With its well-designed interiors, comfortable seating, and excellent suspension, the Land Cruiser offers a smooth ride, minimizing fatigue even on bumpy terrain. The vehicle’s air conditioning system also plays a vital role in maintaining a comfortable temperature, essential during scorching African summers.

Adaptability and Customization:

The Toyota Land Cruiser’s versatility is another reason it is highly favored for African safaris. It can be easily adapted to meet the specific requirements of safari adventures. Whether it’s the installation of roof racks for extra luggage capacity, the addition of pop-up rooftops for optimal game viewing, or the inclusion of specialized equipment for wildlife tracking, the Land Cruiser can be customized to enhance the safari experience.

Extensive Service and Support Network:

Toyota has an extensive presence in Africa, which means that servicing and maintenance support for the Land Cruiser are readily available in most safari destinations. This network of authorized dealerships and service centers ensures that any unforeseen issues can be addressed promptly, minimizing downtime and allowing travelers to focus on their safari experience without worrying about vehicle reliability.

The Toyota Land Cruiser has earned its reputation as the ultimate vehicle for African safaris for a multitude of reasons. Its remarkable off-road capabilities, legendary reliability, and comfort make it a preferred choice for navigating the challenging terrains and diverse landscapes of the African continent. Whether you are embarking on a self-drive adventure or joining a guided safari tour, the Land Cruiser offers the dependability and performance necessary to ensure an unforgettable and safe journey through the captivating wilderness of Africa

Safari 9-Seater

The safari equivalent of a stretch limo, our custom-built safari vehicle offers exceptional comfort and visibility paired with the reliability and power of a 4x4. welcome aboard..

Safari vehicle with pop-up roof

For fairly obvious reasons most parks in and around Namibia insist you stay within the safe confines of your vehicle. While you might happily take this sound advice on board it can be a bit of a bind when you're faced with the shot of a lifetime: storm clouds on the Etosha horizon; elephants having a frolic in the waterhole; wing mirror and A-pillar front and centre.

Six of the nine seats have large windows, the roof pops up and we've thrown in air conditioning to sweeten the deal. Now you can make that shot and travel in comfort. This safari vehicle is a four-wheel drive workhorse with the power to tackle any terrain.

The vehicle is open between the driver's and the rear seats making for an intimate experience with your guide. And the built-in PA system carries your guide's pearls all the way to the rear of this 18-foot cruise ship. With an extra tank your range is around the 2,000km mark, which offers equal parts peace of mind and the ability to go way, way, way off the main tourist routes.

Please note: with its extended bulk, the 9-Seater Safari Vehicle may only be driven by a qualified driver/guide and is not available for self-drive hire.

Chopped Up Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Convertible Is The Perfect Safari Vehicle

by Thanos Pappas

The Toyota Land Cruiser Series 300 has gotten a lot of love from aftermarket companies , but noone went as far as the pictured custom-made convertible variant of the off-roader that was recently spotted in the United Arab Emirates.

The Land Cruiser is known for its off-road credentials and durability, but also for its roominess and practicality. It seems that the combination of those features prompted someone to convert it into a safari vehicle by chopping off the roof. The result was posted on Instagram by user Lc300.qa , who is also a fellow Land Cruiser owner.

Besides the obvious removal of the roof, the pillars, the side windows, and the rear windscreen, the Land Cruiser is fitted with protective metal structures at the front and at the back, in case a wild animal decides to attack the bumpers or the lighting units of the SUV. Passengers on the other hand will have to rely on the tubular structure for rollover protection and a tent above the second row.

Judging from the limited availability of the model due to growing demand, there’s a chance that the donor vehicle for the convertible one-off was already damaged, possibly in a rollover accident. From the early days of production, there have been plenty of accidents reported, either during transportation or during the first few miles driven in a brand-new example of the SUV.

In any case, the Toyota Land Cruiser convertible is located in Sharjah, which is the third-largest city in the United Arab Emirates after Dubai and Abu Dhabi. We don’t know the cost of the conversion but we are sure not many Land Cruiser owners will opt for something this radical for their SUV.

Convertible Toyota Land Cruiser Is How To Safari In Style

With four-zone automatic climate control.

Land Cruiser

The perennial Toyota Land Cruiser is one of the most dynamic vehicles on the face of planet Earth. This Japanese SUV comes from humble beginnings, and was originally used as a farming and off-road vehicle , but has come a long way. These days the Land Cruiser can be considered a luxury SUV that transports politicians and other dignitaries, and we've seen the current J300 generation get transformed into a carbon-clad street weapon , and even a rolling military bunker . But this topless safari version cruising the deserts of the United Arab Emirates is a first, and in all honesty, it looks amazing.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lc300.qa (@lc300.qa)

It is no secret that the UAE loves a good Land Cruiser. These cars are as ubiquitous as camels in the Middle East, and people use them in all kinds of roles, safaris clearly being one of them. The 300 Series is the most capable, and refined Land Cruiser yet, and this safari machine clearly caters to the well off.

The first thing you might notice is the lack of a roof and the two roll-over hoops. There's a small tent screen over the second row, and a massive bull bar to motivate any lazy camels crossing the road. With prices for the Land Cruiser starting at around $85,000, whoever commissioned this conversion clearly has some bucks to spend, or this car could have been damaged in a desert drifting incident. Either way, this has to be one of the most lavish safari cars ever.

Under the hood of the land cruiser sits a 5.7-liter V8 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine produces 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque which it sends to all four wheels. Standard features include four-zone climate control (that's most likely been rendered useless) perforated leather seats, wireless phone charging, a surround-view camera system, and blind-spot monitoring. We're not exactly sure what type of animals roam the dunes of the UAE, but at least you'll be able to spot them in style.

  • WHERE TO GO

At Sunrays car rental safaris we have a broad range of transport options and all vehicles that we use are of good quality, regularly maintained and come with a professional and friendly driver-guide. The Toyota Safari Land Cruisers (4×4) are the standard East African design customised for safaris. The vehicles used for overland road safaris are not open sided like those we use in parks and movement within camps and lodges but have roof hatches which either fold over or pop-up.

Toyota Safari Landcruiser 4X4

A standard game drive vehicle is an open air 4×4 vehicle either with or without a canopy. The canopy is useful during wet conditions and serves as protection from the blistering African sun. The majority of lodges use the standard Land Rovers and/or Toyota Land Cruisers. Our Toyota 4X4 Safari Land Cruisers or 4X4 Land Cruiser for Safari are perfect for an African Safari. The vehicles are of good quality, well maintained and come with a friendly professional driver-guide. The 4×4 Toyota Land Cruisers are custom designed for safaris. They have a pop-up roof for game viewing and the side is not open but have glass windows to offer you the best views. Those that are used for gameviewing mostly are built with open sides to offer maximum views of the wildlife when doing game drives.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Is The Revival Of An Off-Road Icon

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Is The Revival Of An Off-Road Icon

If you hear the name Land Cruiser and still find yourself thinking about the bulky, rounded machine from 2021, I’ve got great news: for 2024, Toyota’s stealth wealth off-roader has been revived as the squared-off and capable machine that made it such a star in the first place. Its looks alone have been enough to lure in the adventurous type , but does its capability live up to the hype? I’m pleased to report that yes, it does.

Full disclosure: Toyota invited me to Coronado Island in San Diego, California for an all-out trip test driving four new or refreshed Toyota models in just two days. It was an impressive display of event organization, though I think I was most taken by the ducklings and flamingos living in the pond outside the hotel.

When the 2021 Land Cruiser run came to an end, Toyota told us that the model was dead in the United States. For over a decade the bulbous SUV had lumbered along, mostly unchanged, on the Lexus LX platform. While its reliability and performance was nothing to shake a stick at, it was also just kind of… meh. It looked like every other SUV on the market (see: bulbous), and it didn’t quite impress on the interior, tech, or performance fronts. It was fine, but it wasn’t spectacular.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser rear angle

Now, for 2024, the Land Cruiser is back from a very ignominious death, and Toyota has pulled off an impressive wholesale evolution to bring this off-roader back to its roots while still relying on the best tech that the 21st century has to offer. Let’s dig into what makes this model such a winner.

At its base is Toyota’s TNGA-F truck platform, the same basic structure you’ll find under the Tundra, Sequoia, and Tacoma. That said, the Land Cruiser has also shrunk. In its previous incarnation, it was a full-size SUV twinned with the Lexus LX. Now it’s twinned with the smaller Lexus GX — our new Land Cruiser is what’s sold as the Land Cruiser Prado elsewhere — offering just two rows of seating for five folks to do battle against smaller off-roaders like the Jeep Wrangler and the Ford Bronco.

It also boasts Toyota’s i-Force Max hybrid powertrain, which is composed of a turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-4 engine that makes 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. The EPA estimates you’ll get 23 MPG combined with this configuration, which isn’t super great but still represents a significant step up from previous Land Cruiser models, and it can tow up to 6,000 pounds. To offer some further comparisons, this new LC makes 55 fewer horsepower, 64 more lb-ft of torque, and can tow 2,100 fewer pounds than the old V8 truck. It’s also over 800 pounds lighter than the previous model.

Let’s Get Off-Roading

I had a chance to experience two different off-road trims on two different off-road courses provided by Toyota. The first was a technical trail that involved sharp inclines and declines, lots of rock crawling, and a waterlogged portion, while the second was called the “playground” and felt like such: there were some sharp declines, but it was also far less technically challenging.

Even in its base 1958 trim, the 2024 Land Cruiser is loaded with the kind of tech and componentry you want for climbing around in the dirt. Every model has a 31-degree approach, a 25-degree breakover and 22-degree departure angle. You’ve got basics like locking rear and center differentials as standard for all grades, which helps split the power 50/50 between the front and rear wheels for better traction on even the toughest terrains. You’ve also got full-time four-wheel drive as standard, as well as Crawl Control, which serves as an off-road-y kind of cruise control. Push a button, and you’ll crawl along at a slow, adjustable speed so that all you have to do behind the wheel is focus on steering. If you’ve used this tech before when it was introduced on the 2022 Toyota Tacoma and Tundra TRD Pro models, you might have noticed it sounded… a little gnarly. There used to be a lot of intrusive feedback in the form of engine groan and floorboard creaking, but that has been taken care of to create a much quieter, smoother ride.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser interior

Move up a level to the Land Cruiser trim, and you get even more capability — and a friendlier off-road experience for newcomers or short drivers like me. Those changes are more on the tech front, such as a multi-terrain monitor. Essentially, it utilizes several external cameras to display your surroundings on the infotainment screen. I’m fairly short, so it can be tough for me to get a visual on my surroundings without a robust camera system, and Toyota’s is one of the finest I’ve used. The picture is clear, and the abundance of angles helps you avoid the most challenging obstacles that might have otherwise crept up on you.

You can also select one of several different terrain modes that will help your Land Cruiser cater its drive to, say, rocky paths, muddy ruts, or sandy dunes. I didn’t have a chance to really put these different modes into practice, but in essence, they deploy different settings to tackle different terrains. I think I was most impressed with the front stabilizer disconnect mechanism. Plenty of off-road machines have this feature, but on the Land Cruiser, you just press a button, and voilà : you get some ridiculous suspension articulation.

What Trim Is Right For Me?

Some Toyota models out there really go hog wild when it comes to the trim situation, but Toyota has blessedly kept things simple for the Land Cruiser. You’ll have your pick of three different trims for this model year: Land Cruiser 1958, Land Cruiser, or Land Cruiser First Edition. Each successive trim represents a step up the technology and luxury ladder, and I’m here to guide you through just what you’d need to know to decide on the right trim for you.

Land Cruiser 1958: As Basic As A Land Cruiser Gets

If you’re the kind of person who wants an elevated off-roading experience but who doesn’t need enough technology to make your grandmother weep, then the Land Cruiser 1958 will be your dream machine. If you haven’t already guessed, the “1958" in this trim grade is a callback to the Land Cruiser’s original debut year in the United States, and it serves as the most basic offering in Toyota’s updated Land Cruiser lineup. You’ll gain the same retro styling as the rest of the Land Cruiser lineup — that neat “heritage” grille, rounded headlamps, fabric seats — with a boost in tech offerings. Included are blind spot monitoring, a 7-inch gauge cluster screen, an 8-inch touchscreen, automatic climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a six-speaker sound system. On the off-road side of things, you’ll stick with some of the nicer basics: locking center and rear differentials, rear coil springs, full-time four-wheel drive, a two-speed transfer case, a brake controller, a 2400W AC inverter, and Crawl Control.

I didn’t have a chance to drive the 1958 trim, but I did get a lengthy off-road ride in one with a fellow journalist. It’s definitely a more laid-back machine designed for the folks who know what they’re doing on a trail, since you won’t have multiple camera angles to give you a sense of your surroundings. If you’re confident and competent, you’ll be fine. I am neither of those things, which is why I was glad to have a ride in this trim on the technical off-road course Toyota had developed for us. As a shorter human being, I have a hard time seeing around bulkier, modern SUVs, and the sharp angles and wide planes of the Land Cruiser gave me a tough time. From the fabric-trimmed passenger seat, though, I was able to appreciate just how comfy I was while facing off against steep declines, water-flooded paths, and rocky outcrops.

As far as cost goes, this is the cheapest trim you can find, boasting an MSRP of $57,345 (including mandatory dealer processing and handling fees).

Land Cruiser (Land Cruiser?): A Formidable Contender

For the folks out there who love the capability of the Land Cruiser but want to take things up a notch in both tech and comfort, there’s the Land Cruiser grade. It bumps up the basics of the 1958 grade by adding rectangular LED headlamps and heated and ventilated synthetic leather seats. You’re also getting some of the beefier off-road features, like color-selectable LED fog lights, a stabilizer disconnect mechanism that allows for greater suspension articulation, multi-terrain select to curate your driving experience to the conditions at hand, and the multi-terrain monitor. Plus, you’re also getting convenience features like larger dashboard and infotainment screens, a 10-speaker sound system, and a power liftgate.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser

If you’re in the mood for more but don’t feel the need to fully commit to the First Edition model, you can get your mid-tier Land Cruiser with the Premium Package. That’ll give you leather-trimmed heated and ventilated front seats with lumbar support and driver memory features, a 14-speaker JBL audio system, a digital rearview mirror, a head-up display, illuminated entry, a power moonroof, a center console cool box, and additional USB-C charging ports in the cargo area.

During my off-road drive, I nabbed a Land Cruiser with the Premium Package. If you’re strictly concerned about the act of off-roading, you probably don’t need all those premium features that the package provides. Those are going to come in handy when you’re in the throes of a long-ass trip and want ways to keep your water bottles cool, or if you want to listen to some music. For shorter trailside jaunts, you’re probably not going to miss ‘em.

As far as the off-road tech features went, I was impressed with the offerings. The stabilizer disconnect mechanism offered incredible articulation; any time I wasn’t motoring forward on the off-road trail, I was watching the driver in front of me, marveling at just how far apart the rear tires were in terms of lift while still remaining on the ground. From the cockpit, you definitely get a much greater sense of control and comfort. I also really relied on the multi-terrain monitor, as it gives a much greater view of the surroundings than you can get just from the front seat. That means you’ll be able to clock obstacles or rocks sticking out into your way. I did, however, learn the hard way that you cannot go off-roading while relying almost entirely on the monitors; a normal-looking rock on my screen looked harmless from the camera angle, but if I’d have peered out the window, I’d have seen that it was a very sharp rock heading directly for my left rear tire. (I apologize, Toyota, for popping a tire; I will literally never recover.)

The upgrades for the Land Cruiser trim mean you’ll be facing higher prices. As standard, you’ll be paying $63,345. Opt for the available $4,600 Premium Package, and you’ll have a total of $68,245.

Land Cruiser First Edition: Let’s Get Luxe

If you simply cannot live without boasting the best of the best, look no further than the Land Cruiser First Edition. This model gives you all the goodies from the Land Cruiser Premium Package, but it throws in round LED headlamps, special 18-inch wheels, a “First Edition” logo embossed on the door panels, a front skid plate, a roof rack, and rock rails. The First Edition comes in at $76,345. That added off-road protection will definitely come in handy for the avid adventurers, but I didn’t test this trim, largely because the 20-minute off-road courses that Toyota created for us didn’t necessarily require the accouterments that would make a longer excursion far more comfortable.

Vintage But Modern In All The Right Places

I hate to be one of those people who laments the death of the cool cars of our past, but I do have to be honest: The constant push toward chunky, rounded SUVs hurts my soul, especially when those styling cues come for the sick-ass legacy cars of the past — the ones that have cool stories to tell. I did my best to pretend the former generation Land Cruiser just didn’t exist; sure, it was reliable and capable, but it also didn’t provide any of the aesthetics that made the original machine so legendary.

That’s why I’m so stoked on the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser. The Ford Bronco proved we’re back in an era where retro styling has a serious place in the off-road vehicle market, and the Land Cruiser kicks it up a notch with nicer amenities and a more luxurious overall feel — because why should you have to sacrifice capability for comfort? With the Land Cruiser, you don’t have to choose.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser First Drive Review: Off-Road Cheat Code

The latest Toyota Land Cruiser is a little smaller and a little cheaper than before, but it’s every bit as capable on the trail.

Toyota Reviews photo

The Land Cruiser needs no introduction. It’s been one of Toyota’s preeminent badges for seven decades, worn by its most capable off-roaders around the globe. And, yet, the latest 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser warrants a reintroduction because the SUV took a brief hiatus from the U.S. market in 2021 only to return this year in the wake of the massive popularity of the off-road segment.

The Toyota SUV that returned is not the same as the one that left, and I don’t mean that metaphorically. This U.S.-spec Land Cruiser is the 250 series, known as the Land Cruiser Prado in nearly all markets abroad. The previous available model was the Land Cruiser 200 series, which was succeeded by the comparatively burlier 300 series. Toyota chose to bring the Land Cruiser 300 to the States only as the Lexus LX 600 .

So, unless buyers move upmarket, the “true” (read: full-size) Land Cruiser remains unavailable in America. But after taking the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser off-road, I’m here to tell you there’s not much to fret about. Despite its smaller size, the new SUV earns its badge and then some: It’s a Land Cruiser, alright. One of the best yet.

<em>José Rodríguez Jr.</em>

Make no mistake; the Land Cruiser we’re getting is smaller, but it’s not small by any means. It’s officially a mid-size SUV, sitting below the Toyota Sequoia in terms of size and price. It’ll technically sit above the new 4Runner among Toyota’s stable despite both being classed as mid-size SUVs. The difference between the upcoming 4Runner and this Land Cruiser—besides price—will remain in their styling, comfort, and overall aims as vehicles. Toyota insists there won’t be much overlap in their sales, and I am cautiously inclined to agree; after all, a Land Cruiser buyer is not the same as that of a 4Runner.

According to Toyota, the latter is more interested in hardcore off-roading, while the former is looking for an all-rounder that still boasts great off-road capability along with reliability and durability. Hitting those three points was the reason Toyota chose to rerelease the Land Cruiser in the U.S., claiming a return to its roots.

Those traits also happen to be characteristics of the Lexus GX, a perennial fan favorite. The new Lexus GX 550 is essentially the same vehicle as this Land Cruiser albeit with an added emphasis on luxury. But the GX naturally starts at a higher price, making the Land Cruiser seem like a bargain. The LC also looks cooler, if you ask me. And all it took was Toyota going back to old-school Land Cruiser designs, which are clearly on display in this new model .

There’s no getting around the family resemblance of the new Land Cruiser to FJs of old. Whereas Toyota has taken big swings with cars like the GR Supra , which some critics deride for lacking the spirit of its predecessors, the new Land Cruiser is overflowing with it.

There will be three available trims at launch, from the base 1958 model to the simple but confusingly named Land Cruiser middle trim. The top-of-the-line model is called the First Edition, and it’s limited to 5,000 units for 2024. Toyota refused to disclose whether these are all sold out already, so it’s possible that you could get your hands on one but it won’t come cheap.

The Land Cruiser First Edition starts at $76,345 including destination, which is almost $20,000 over the price of a base model. Despite the dramatic difference in cost, 1958 and First Edition models share the same basic looks, both getting circular headlights inspired by old Cruisers. The middle trim has rectangular LED headlights that nod to the 60 series, specifically the FJ62. It’s hard to pick which looks better because both nail the retro look . You could say the 1958 is more retro, but two-tone paint is only available on upper trims and the white roof is a Land Cruiser staple.

The Land Cruiser First Edition adds more extensive underbody protection with skid plates for the engine and transmission, along with rock rails and a roof rack. The cabin gets a few “First Edition” logos and leather seats, as opposed to the leather-like “Softex” in the middle trim or cloth of the base model. Still, the price of the First Edition model seems high for what you’re getting.

The decision between trims could come down to the added interior and off-road tech of the middle and higher trims. There’s an upgraded 10-speaker JBL sound system in the middle trim, and the infotainment screen gets a big size bump to 12.3 inches versus the 8 inches in the base model. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard no matter the trim. The basics are all there in the 1958 model and the plush texture of its cloth seats is fantastic. It’s a true throwback right down to the interior.

Toyota Reviews photo

The new Land Cruiser still handles like a body-on-frame behemoth, which is to be expected given that it rides on the TNGA-F global truck platform. This is the same one that underpins the Tundra, Sequoia, Tacoma, Land Cruiser 300, and the upcoming 4Runner. So, even though this new Cruiser is “just” a Prado, it shares much with the full-size Land Cruiser sold overseas.

Of course, it differs from the 300 Series in powertrain, with the U.S.-spec Land Cruiser powered by the i-Force Max Hybrid across all trims. It combines a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor in the bell housing of the eight-speed automatic transmission. This combination packs quite the punch, making 326 horsepower and max torque (465 lb-ft, to be precise) comes on early in the power band. Despite being a hybrid, it sounds pleasantly agricultural, which is to say it still sounds like a Land Cruiser out on the trail.

Toyota restricted our testing to off-road courses carved into the San Ysidro Mountains outside of San Diego, so I won’t comment on the Land Cruiser’s highway handling. Courses were split into high- and low-speed trials, though you likely won’t go too fast in the new Land Cruiser while four wheelin'. The LC is big, and you’ll feel every bit of its mass as you tackle trails. But that only makes this Cruiser’s abilities all the more impressive. The new Land Cruiser is so adept at going off-road that it feels like cheating.

Toyota Reviews photo

The high-speed trail could be driven in either 4Hi or 4Lo for greater traction but even with all the steep hills, 4Lo was hardly necessary. It proceeded to climb like a billy goat, and, even though I tried, I couldn’t get the suspension to bottom out. The LC gets a double wishbone suspension out front with a stabilizer bar disconnect on the higher trims and multi-link coil spring rear. There are twin-tube shocks at all four corners.

Toyota’s new off-road SUV clambered up and over without breaking a sweat, goading me to go faster than I should have. The hills and berms were so inviting I found myself overshooting and having to reverse on the trail once, though Toyota claims that Turn Assist gives the truck a turning radius of 20 feet. I never struggled to steer the beast, but its turn radius wasn’t as tight as the specs let on.

The low-speed trail stitched together segments of rock crawling and water fording with ruts and big whoops to test the Land Cruiser's articulation. There were more steep hills to climb and descents over rock gardens where Toyota suggested we use the off-roading functions that come standard on all trims, such as Downhill Assist and Crawl Control.

Toyota Reviews photo

Crawl Control has been available on previous Land Cruisers but was hardly useful until this latest iteration. Prior versions of the tech didn’t inspire confidence with choppy, chatter-prone performance. This latest system is much smoother and makes rolling over obstacles as easy as putting the LC on a good line and feathering the brakes. It handles the acceleration input and drivers merely select from one of five speed settings.

Toyota calls it an “off-road cruise control.” And, yeah, that sounds about right. All you have to do out on the trail is decide if you want to lock the limited-slip center differential or the rear diff (e-locking) and Crawl Control handles the rest, leveraging the SUV’s full-time four-wheel drive and active traction control to slowly but surely roll through whatever is in front of it. The system never faltered. It confidently got the Land Cruiser over rocks, muddy ruts, babbling brooks, and up and down steep hills.

But a review like this wouldn’t be complete without a test that dispensed with the off-road driver aids. I had driven the course with all the assists on in the middle Land Cruiser trim, with the windows up and air conditioning set to an icy “Lo.” I had gone off-roading as comfortably as possible in the higher trim but then rolled down the windows and went with manual control in the 1958. You just can’t beat fresh air and the steady sound of an engine building as you climb over obstacles. Even without the off-road assists, the Land Cruiser easily negotiated the trail and made me feel more talented than I actually am.

Toyota Reviews photo

So, would I prefer the full open-air feeling of something like the Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco ? Or, better yet, would I prefer the comfort of the Jeep Grand Cherokee or Wagoneer, not to mention the refinement of other rivals from Land Rover ? No, I wouldn’t. As far as I’m concerned, the Land Cruiser 1958 occupies a singular sweet spot of comfort and off-road prowess. Top it all off with killer design and it’s a shut-out.

The upper LC trims are close to the Lexus GX in terms of luxury, but the GX overtakes it even when the Toyota is equipped with the $4,600 premium package, which adds creature comforts like a digital rearview mirror, moonroof, 14-speaker sound system, and head-up display, among other things. We’ll have to wait to compare the Land Cruiser and the new 4Runner, even if Toyota says no one will cross-shop the two. Chances are, some people might.

No, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser that returned to American shores is not the one that said farewell. It’s likely some fans will remain upset that the 300 Series is not available in the U.S., but this Land Cruiser almost seems to shrug that off and is an easy contender for one of the best SUVs on the market right now. Toyota set out to take the Land Cruiser back to its roots and it largely succeeded. It may be a smaller Land Cruiser, but it’s just as capable as ever, if not more.

Toyota Lays Out Full Trim Level Details and Pricing for 2024 Land Cruiser

toyota land cruiser 2024 exterior oem 05 jpg

By Jared Gall

With the reinvented 2024 Land Cruiser, Toyota seems to be acknowledging that a price closing in on six figures deters buyers from realizing an SUV’s off-road potential. For 2024, the Land Cruiser still packs standard full-time four-wheel drive, locking center and rear differentials, front and rear tow hooks, and a front skid plate. Those looking for greater suspension articulation can opt for the available electronically disconnecting front sway bar. Hopefully encouraging buyers to put that gear to use is a base price some 30% lower, with the 2024 Land Cruiser starting at $57,345 (all prices include $1,395 destination).

Powertrain Specs and MPG

In place of the outgoing SUV’s naturally aspirated 5.7-liter V-8 engine, the new Land Cruiser has half as many cylinders. But with a turbocharger and hybrid assistance, the 2.4-liter four-cylinder puts out 326 horsepower and 465 pounds-feet of torque, a deficit of 55 hp and an increase of 64 pounds-feet from the 2021 model. Power is sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels, and all 2024 Land Cruisers can tow up to 6,000 pounds. With an EPA-rated fuel economy of 22/25/23 mpg city/highway/combined, the modern powertrain clobbers the old 5.7-liter, which managed just 13/17/14 mpg.

Trim Levels and Safety Features

Named for the Land Cruiser’s first year on sale in the U.S., the 1958 hearkens back to the truck’s roots with a blend of retro styling elements, such as round headlights, and a basic equipment level. The 1958 is available in just three colors — black, white and silver — and rides on dark-gray 18-inch wheels. “Basic” means something quite different today than it did in 1958: The entry-level Land Cruiser is fitted with cloth seats, but they are heated. Occupants also enjoy keyless entry and start, tri-zone automatic climate control, a six-speaker sound system, and an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay .

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on every Land Cruiser and features forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure steering assist, lane-centering steering, traffic-sign recognition and automatic high beams. Not included in the suite but also standard across the line are front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert.

Somewhat confusingly, the mid-tier Land Cruiser doesn’t have a trim-level designation; it is simply the Land Cruiser. Riding on matte-gray 18-inch wheels, it can be had in seven colors, including a pair of two-tone options, and adds the disconnecting front sway bar, roof rails and a power liftgate. For a more modern touch, the Land Cruiser gets rectangular LED headlights, as well as LED foglights with selectable colors. Inside, it gets synthetic leather, heated and ventilated front seats, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-speaker sound system, and front, side, and rear cameras for keeping an eye on obstacles while off-roading.

At the top of the range, the Land Cruiser First Edition scales back the color palette to a pair of two-tone options and two monotone schemes. It wears a power moonroof, matte-black 18-inch wheels, rock rails to protect the rocker panels, a unique skid plate, the 1958’s circular headlights with the mid-tier’s color-changing foglights and roof rails with a cargo basket. Occupants are treated to leather upholstery, a 14-speaker JBL audio system and wireless phone charging. Additional safety equipment includes a head-up display and front cross-traffic alert.

Exploring Boundless Adventures: The All-New 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is Back, Uniting Families and Off-Road Enthusiasts Alike

M y journey with the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser began amidst the sun-kissed trails of Southern California, where the desert terrain awaited our exploration. Partnered with the seasoned off-roader Kristin Shaw , whose experience in the Rebelle Rally proved invaluable, I eagerly anticipated delving into Toyota's latest iteration of the iconic Land Cruiser.

The Land Cruiser's return to the U.S. market after a two-year hiatus sparked excitement and speculation among enthusiasts. Rumors swirled, but Toyota decisively quashed them in 2023, announcing the Land Cruiser's resurgence for the 2024 model year. Here it was, boasting a rugged demeanor hinting at its heritage while embracing a new ethos.

Our expedition lasted two afternoons. We navigated various off-road obstacles that showcased the Land Cruiser's prowess. From Multi-Terrain select and crawl control to hill descent and even disconnecting the front stabilizer bar for enhanced articulation, every feature was put to the test. It was a symphony of technology and raw capability.

Stepping inside, the Land Cruiser's interior greeted us with understated elegance. While luxury appointments had been dialed down compared to its predecessors, the cabin exuded modernity and practicality. Spaciousness was abundant, ensuring comfort for both daily commutes and adventurous escapades. It might lack the opulence of yesteryears, but it more than compensated with functionality.

Also, inside the cabin, technology merged seamlessly with utility. The multimedia touchscreen, designed by Toyota's Texas-based team, boasted wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility, complemented by a premium JBL® audio system. USB-C fast chargers dotted the interior, including the cargo area, catering to the modern adventurer's connectivity needs.

Toyota's commitment to safety was evident in the Land Cruiser's standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite , which offers a comprehensive array of active safety features. From a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection to a Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, it provides peace of mind both on and off the road.

Externally, the Land Cruiser commanded attention with its rugged, boxy silhouette — a testament to its off-road pedigree. Yet, it wasn't just for show. Toyota meticulously crafted the front and rear overhangs, enhancing its trail-readiness. It was a vehicle that didn't just look capable; it exuded it.

But what about the driving experience? Equipped exclusively with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, the Land Cruiser delivered a formidable 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque — a blend of power and efficiency that underscored Toyota's commitment to performance-driven innovation. The hybrid system seamlessly integrates with the full-time four-wheel drive, ensuring traction on any terrain. For you Land Cruiser enthusiasts of old, you may be on the fence about replacing the powerful V8; I implore you to reserve your inclination to dismiss the performance of this new 4-cylinder setup. Take it from me: the power and torque are in demand, providing confidence, performance, and efficiency.

When I have the opportunity to test drive vehicles, my initial impulse is to identify the individuals whom I believe would be the most suitable candidates to recommend them to. While initially, the traditional African American family did not come to mind for such a formidable off-road vehicle, after speaking with many of the off-roaders on the trip about all of their family adventures in nature, it dawned on me that engaging in outdoor activities as a family could be beneficial.

For most families, African American families in suburban and inner-city environments in particular, navigating parenthood in today's digital age, the influence of technology on our children can sometimes feel like a double-edged sword. While screens offer endless entertainment and educational opportunities, they also pose challenges to fostering outdoor exploration and connection with nature — a vital aspect of childhood development.

Historically, outdoor activities may have eluded our community in modern inner cities, but the allure of adventure in the wild beckons with tantalizing possibilities. Imagine the joy of embarking on rugged off-road expeditions, traversing remote trails where cell reception is scarce. In those moments, technology takes a backseat, and children are compelled to engage with their surroundings, just as we did in our own youth.

The rebirth of the Land Cruiser emerges as a beacon of hope, bridging the gap between technology-driven lifestyles and the call of the great outdoors. When embarking on family road trips to new fishing holes or secluded campsites, the Land Cruiser's abundance of USB-C chargers throughout the cabin will ensure that children remain occupied during the journey. Yet, the vehicle's rugged off-road capability truly shines, offering the promise of exploration beyond the beaten path. No longer bound by the constraints of civilization, families can immerse themselves in nature's embrace, forging unforgettable memories.

As your children revel in the thrill of adventure, their complaints about the lack of cell service will fade into the background. Instead, they can discover the joy of discovery — the satisfaction of scaling a rocky incline or splashing through a babbling brook. In those moments, technology becomes a tool rather than a distraction, enriching your outdoor experiences rather than detracting from them.

In a world where screens increasingly dominate our lives, the Land Cruiser offers a reprieve — an opportunity to reconnect with nature and each other. As African American families, we should embrace this chance to forge deeper bonds and create lasting memories amidst the untamed wilderness. With the Land Cruiser as your trusted companion, the possibilities for adventure are endless, beckoning you to explore, discover, and embrace the wonders of the great outdoors.

With a starting MSRP of $55,950*, the Land Cruiser signals a departure from its lofty price tags of the past, making it more accessible to families and off-road enthusiasts alike. Its three-grade strategy caters to diverse needs, from the rugged simplicity of the 1958 grade to the premium exclusivity of the First Edition.

In a landscape teeming with worthy competitors like the Ford Bronco, all-new Toyota 4Runner (coming late 2024), and Jeep Wrangler, the 2024 Land Cruiser stood tall, embodying a legacy of durability, capability, and innovation. As I reflected on our journey through sunlit trails and rocky terrain, one thing became abundantly clear — the Land Cruiser wasn't just a vehicle; it was an experience, beckoning adventurers to chart their own paths, wherever they may lead.

5 New Toyota Land Cruiser Features To Be Excited About

2024 Land Cruiser

An iconic sport utility vehicle that some people thought may have disappeared forever has resurfaced with some significant changes from previous models. The Toyota Land Cruiser dates back to 1951 when a division of the Japanese police force used it. Named the National Police Reserve of Japan, this group was designed to fill personnel gaps in the military and act as law enforcement on a national level following the Korean War. The rugged and dependable Land Cruiser (known initially as the Toyota Jeep BJ) proved itself during turbulent times, and Toyota saw an opportunity for growth outside the military sector with a civilian version of the vehicle.

Over the years, the Land Cruiser evolved and made enhancements to its appearance, features, and off-road performance. By 2021, Toyota had sold only 3,711 Land Cruisers in the U.S., according to Good Car Bad Car , and decided to discontinue it in the States. Many fans of the legendary all-terrain vehicle worried they had seen the last of Toyota's SUV.

Fortunately, the Land Cruiser has returned for 2024, and it's clear the automaker used the 2-year break to reimagine and improve its backcountry 4-wheel drive flagship. So, what can you expect with the new Land Cruiser, and what changes is the automotive community buzzing about? With such a rich history, every Toyota Land Cruiser generation, no matter how great , provides an insightful look back.

This version is a hybrid

As the news broke that the Land Cruiser was making a return, many noted the new and exclusive powertrain, which was a departure from previous editions. The 2021 model featured a 5.7L V8 that produced 381 hp and 401-lb-ft of torque. However, the 2021 Land Cruiser also suffered from poor fuel economy, as it could only reach an estimated 17 mpg on the highway.

Now equipped with an i-FORCE MAX 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder hybrid engine, the off-roading icon can generate 326 hp and 465-lb-ft of torque. The new version not only includes nearly the same horsepower and offers more torque, but it also provides better gas mileage at an estimated 25 mpg highway.

The decision to use hybrid technology has provided the Land Cruiser with a much more efficient engine that is still capable. While the SUV primarily utilizes the combustion engine, it also includes a 288V battery and electric motor configuration, which helps support the gasoline engine.

Smaller than its predecessor

The new Land Cruiser now takes up less space than previous generations with a shorter length and two-row-only seating. Earlier models of Toyota's SUV offered three rows of seating, extending the vehicle's dimensions. While the increased size offered additional cargo room, it wasn't as helpful when leaving the pavement for dirt, mud, or sand. The automaker seems to have shifted away from a full-size SUV focus to compete with smaller off-roading competitors.

In terms of off-roading, a vehicle with a shorter wheelbase is typically more maneuverable. Mid-size SUVs may be better equipped than their larger full-size cousins for the challenges of the backcountry. More compact dimensions can enable easier traversal across tricky terrain and afford off-road enthusiasts more time on the trail with better fuel efficiency.

So, the new Land Cruiser comes prepared for more nimble all-terrain action than its previous, larger proportioned version. We took a first look at the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser and have some interesting takeaways and deeper analysis.

Three unique trims

Toyota is offering three different trims to attract drivers by offering a wide range of features, luxury, and visual elements. The Land Cruiser 1958 is a return to basics that includes the necessities without all the fancy options that are included in the other trims. You'll also enjoy an 8-inch media touchscreen, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

When you step up to the next trim, you'll notice more exterior color options, a Multi-Terrain Monitor system, a stabilizer disconnect mechanism, Multi-Terrain Select technology, and a larger 12.3-inch media display, among other features.

Lastly, the First Edition trim includes some rugged off-road add-ons, enhanced interior, and additional technology. The exterior of this trim benefits from tougher skid plates, mudguards, and roof racks and comes equipped with rock rails for greater protection from the trail. Inside the First Edition Land Cruiser, you can take advantage of the JBL audio system and leather-trimmed seats for comfort beyond what's available in the other trim levels.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0

Another advantage of the new Land Cruiser is that it comes with Toyota's enhanced safety technology. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 improves on an already stellar suite of systems designed to help prevent accidents. This new version offers a more robust front camera with a broader field of view, more detail, and a greater display resolution.

With the ability to see obstacles clearly and identify navigational hazards before it's too late, you may be able to prevent unfortunate road incidents. This upgraded camera could also come in handy when taking Land Cruiser off-road to help spot the best route.

The radar sensor has also been bolstered for Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, allowing for a lengthier and wider detection range. These components, combined with specialized software, additional sensors, and cameras throughout the vehicle, make the technology like Pre-Collision, Lane Departure, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Lane Tracing Assist possible.

Lower price

One of the most exciting aspects of the new Land Cruiser is that it's cheaper than previous models, which could cost upwards of nearly $90,000. The base trim, 1958, starts at just $55,950, which makes the off-roader more accessible than ever. While previous iterations of Toyota's SUV leaned more toward luxury and amenities, this new crop appears to be a return to roots.

The previous generation of Land Cruisers started at around $80,000, which was likely above most people's budgets since, according to Kelly Blue Book , the average American spent $48,334 on a new vehicle in July 2023. This figure is considerably less than the base asking price for past Land Cruisers.

Toyota clearly aims to capture more attention with its off-road SUV, offering comparable performance, better efficiency, an ample amount of extras, and at a lower cost. Even though the attention is currently fixed on the 2024 model, here's why old Toyota Land Cruisers are worth so much today and why collectors covet them.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser: Hybrid power and advanced tech usher in off-road hero’s new era

SAN DIEGO – After two years out of the U.S. market, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser midsize SUV revives one of Toyota’s proudest model names with an all-hybrid lineup and loads of other advanced technology to compete with off-roaders like the Ford Bronco, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Land Rover Defender 110.

The new model’s boxy exterior and available two-tone paint consciously recall the 1958 Land Cruiser that was one of Toyota’s first successes in the American market, while its price and features establish it as one of the brand’s modern flagships.

The five-passenger SUV shares its GA-F architecture and many other systems with Toyota’s other body-on-frame trucks: the Tundra, Tacoma, Sequoia and upcoming 4Runner and Lexus GX and LX. The Land Cruiser is similar in size to the less expensive and even more off-road oriented 4Runner arriving this fall.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser trim levels and prices

2024 Land Cruiser prices start at $59,950. It’s on sale now.

Powerful and efficient, but premium fuel raises cost of driving

The Land Cruiser measures 193.8 inches long, 0.3 inch longer than a Grand Cherokee. At 76.1 inches tall, the Land Cruiser’s roof is 5.3 inches higher than the Jeep’s.

The Jeep’s wheelbase is 4½ inches longer than the Land Cruiser’s 112.2 inches. That suggests a smaller turning radius for the Jeep, but Toyota did not allow on-road evaluation drives. Impressions of its behavior in parking lots, on highways and city streets will have to wait.

All Land Cruisers have full-time all-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case for off-roading. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard.

All Land Cruisers have a turbocharged 2.4L four-cylinder engine linked to Toyota’s proven hybrid electric system.

The powertrain produces 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Both figures top the competitors’ base powerplants.

The hybrid’s EPA estimated fuel economy of 22 mpg in the city, 25 on the highway and 23 combined tops the competitors by 1 to 6 mpg. However, Toyota recommends premium fuel for best performance while the Ford and Jeep both get full power from regular. That makes them less expensive to run, per EPA calculations.

I drove a well-equipped Land Cruiser over a challenging off-road course a couple of miles from the Mexican border.

Driving impressions

The Land Cruiser is roomy and comfortable. The controls are easy to use. Physical buttons, switches and dials for driving modes, climate control, volume and more are within easy reach on the center console and dash.

The steering was firm and direct. The torquey hybrid powertrain delivered plenty of power for steep grades, piles of rock and soft sand.

A handy electronic control system manages throttle, transmission and braking at selectable trail speeds, freeing the driver to concentrate on obstacles ahead, or when topping a rise, the forward camera’s view of what was on the other side of the hill.

The advanced drivetrain and electronic controls combine to take much of the stress out of even difficult trails.

Russian cities battle heating outages as temps drop below freezing

Tens of thousands of people in Russia are affected by a lack of heating, water or electricity, according to Russian media reports, after frost and outdated pipes are causing outages in many cities amidst below freezing temperatures.

A main district heating pipe in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk busted on Thursday, the local media outlet Siberian Express reported.

Hot water and heating failed in more than 100 homes and 12 other buildings, while the hot water from the district heating pipe poured down a main road at minus 15 degrees Celsius.

A survey by the rosteplo.ru website showed that 3,000 people in the harbour city of Vladivostok on the Pacific were without heating on Wednesday.

In the nearby city of Nakhodka, 6,000 people were without heating, while disruptions in the cities of Yekaterinburg, Volgograd, Saratov and Penza in recent days were also reported.

In St Petersburg, the rupture in a district heating pipe should be repaired by Thursday morning, according to the authorities.

In Podolsk, a city near Moscow, the heating plant of an ammunitions factory, which also supplies over 170 high-rise buildings, broke down on January 4. The town's deputy head of administration, Roman Ryazantsev, was taken into custody on Wednesday, according to the court there. About 20,000 people were affected.

This time Russian President Vladimir Putin intervened and ordered a rapid restoration of the heating supply and nationalized the ammunitions factory. Other cities in the Moscow region are also facing heating problems.

Politically, the heating supply failures are a set back for Putin, who is seeking re-election for a fifth term in March.

Affected citizens protested in some cities. In the town of Elektrostal near Moscow, some houses had allegedly not been heated since mid-December, while people are keeping warm by open fires on the street.

In its war of against Ukraine, Russia is attempting to damage the neighbouring country's energy supply by firing missiles at it, while last winter this resulted in electricity, heating, gas and water often failing in Kiev and other cities.

This winter, fewer outages are being reported in Ukraine despite the attacks.
