What You’ll Do & See

Travel down the Overseas Highway , and discover the Florida Keys and Key West. The bus departs from Fort Lauderdale every day and the tour takes place in a 56 passenger coach bus with comfy seats, footrests, and panoramic windows. There is a restroom on the bus and we make a 30-minute stop at around 8:30 AM so you can pick up any groceries or grab a bite to eat before you arrive in Key West.

You’ll arrive in Key West at around 11 AM and you’ll have plenty to see and do around this idyllic island. We recommend planning your day before getting off the bus so you don’t waste a second. On the bus, literature lovers can purchase tickets to the Ernest Hemingway House & Museum — a Key West must-see. Art appreciators can plan a trip to the art and history museum, Custom House. If you’re looking to splash around in the turquoise waters, purchase a place on one of the snorkeling, sailing, or jet ski expeditions. Many of you may want to simply relax on the idyllic beaches or sit down in a bar listening to live music while you sip on your margarita.

At 5:30 PM, we’ll get back on the bus and make our way back to Fort Lauderdale. We’ll arrive at 10:30 PM, and you’ll either be ready to relax after a day of exploring or rested from the bus ride and ready to embrace Fort Lauderdale nightlife.

Every time I hear the word Key Largo, my mind goes straight to the song “Kokomo” by The Beach Boys . What about you?

Key Largo is the “first” key of the Florida Keys.

It is often referred to as the “Diving Capital of the World” due to its proximity to the vibrant coral reefs of the Florida Keys. This area offers exceptional diving and snorkeling opportunities.

And Key Largo is home to the first underwater park in the United States, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park . The park is renowned for its beautiful coral reefs and diverse marine life. This makes for the perfect spot for snorkeling or diving in the Keys.

Also, located in the waters of Key Largo is the famous underwater statue, Christ of the Abyss . This iconic site offers a unique diving and snorkeling experience.

But diving and snorkeling is not the only thing you can do in Key Largo. Key Largo is also a great spot to go swimming with dolphins at Dolphins Plus Bayside.

The Islamorada Sandbar is a shallow area with crystal-clear, turquoise waters. It’s the perfect spot to hang out, swim, float on rafts, kayak, play water games, or just soak up the sun.

Also, located in Islamorada is the Theater of the Sea . This would make a memorable experience for animal lovers.

With a General Admission Ticket at Theatre of the Sea, you can watch the dolphin, sea lion, and parrot shows. Included is also a ride on a bottomless boat and a fish and reptile tour with tropical fish, sharks, sea turtles, stingrays, alligators, and crocodiles.

For an additional amount at Theatre of the Sea, you can choose to swim with dolphins, sea lions, or sharks!

The Direct Route takes you through the busy streets of Miami and Miami Beach before visiting the Florida Keys where you can explore the history of the islands, enjoy the beaches and water sports, and indulge in the superb Keys cuisine.

The Ferry Route escorts you from the bustling Miami neighborhoods to the wilderness of southern Florida, via the Everglades prairies and swamps. There aren't many road trips that include a scenic ferry ride along the Florida Coast - but this one does!

The Direct Route

Head South out of Fort Lauderdale, following US-1 to Aventura. From here, head slightly east, and then south along the scenic coastline towards Miami Beach and then Miami.

Upon leaving Miami, there is the opportunity to take a detour to visit the Southern Glades, part of the world-famous Everglades National Park.

The next part of your drive will take you along the Overseas Highway, offering iconic views of Florida. There are plenty of opportunities to stop and marvel at these along the way.

You will first pass by John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park which offers countless water-based activities. Next up is Marathon, with an Oceanfront Park offering a perfect spot to stretch your legs.

Crossing over the Seven Mile bridge brings you to the home stretch of your drive, passing through Bahia Honda State Park and then on to the National Key Deer Refuge. Following the US 1 highway over Shark Key Bridge, you will finally arrive at Key West.

The Ferry Route

Leaving Fort Lauderdale, head South following Interstate 95 (I-95) through Hollywood to Aventura. Continue South on the highway to Miami, before heading West into the Everglades.

Best time to go on a road trip from Fort Lauderdale to Key West

Florida is nicknamed the “Sunshine State”, which says a lot. You will be in for a treat if you visit in summer and visit the beaches. That being said, you can experience heat and humidity during these warmer months.

Summer is a peak season for the whole of Florida, but also a time when temperatures are soaring (the average at Key West in August is between 81 and 91 degrees Fahrenheit).

Keep an eye out for the hurricane season between August and November. November will bring you temperatures between 72 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit.

Thanksgiving season is another peak season for Miami and Florida Keys, so if you are looking for a festive celebration, this is the time. However, keep in mind that hotel prices will be high and the beaches crowded.

Winters in southeast Florida and in the Keys are mild at 75-80 degrees, which brings a lot of domestic tourists here. Although you cannot go swimming unless you have the proper equipment, you can still enjoy the coastal lifestyle without worrying about staying too long under the sun.

More experienced divers enjoy exploring the USS Spiegel Grove, one of the largest ships ever intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef where pretty fish can thrive.

Back on dry land, travelers can wander nearly six miles of trails at Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, home to more than 80 species of plants and animals. You can also peruse the work of local artists at myriad galleries.

Best beach: Cannon Beach, found within John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, has shallow waters that are perfect for wading. You may even spot cannons and anchors on the beach that remain from a 1715 Spanish shipwreck.

Where to eat: Dig into the catch of the day at The Fish House, Key Largo Conch House or Snook's Bayside Restaurant & Grand Tiki Bar, some of the best traditional restaurants in the area. If you'd rather turf than surf, check out Jimmy Johnson's Big Chill.

Where to stay: If you can't get enough of the underwater world, stay at Jules' Undersea Lodge , the world's first underwater hotel. If you'd rather keep dry, try the adults-only Bungalows Key Largo .

Mile marker: 90–63

Next up en route from Key Largo to Key West is the fisherman's paradise known as Islamorada. Considered the Sport Fishing Capital of the World, it's where backcountry sport fishing and saltwater fly-fishing got their start. Countless seasoned boat captains are ready for hire to take you out to catch the wahoo, marlin, mahi-mahi and tuna that swim in these waters.

There's an even quirkier way to interact with fish here: hand-feeding the tarpon off the docks of Robbie's Marina (MM 77.5). Since 1976, countless Keys visitors have stopped to feed them, and more than 100 kinds of fish gather at the docks for their daily snacks. Feeding the fishies there is so popular, it's been named the No. 1 activity in all the Florida Keys.

Islamorada is also a terrific spot to kitesurf, stand-up paddleboard, go for a hike or take a bicycle ride. Stop by the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary, where injured or displaced birdies now make their homes. Or visit the History of Diving Museum, which boasts one of the world's largest collections of diving helmets.

Best beach: Anne's Beach is popular with families (and dogs) because of its shallow waters and lack of waves. Take a walk along the boardwalk or enjoy a picnic at one of the covered tables.

Where to eat: For a quintessential casual Florida Keys meal, go to the Hungry Tarpon. If you want more elegant fare, make reservations at Chef Michael's for creatively inspired local dishes.

Where to stay: When it's time to lay your head for the night, check in to one of the new oceanfront suites at Cheeca Lodge & Spa , or your own cottage at The Moorings Village & Spa .

Mile marker: 63–40

Marathon is the island chain's top boating destination—and for good reason. The area boasts nearly 2,400 boat slips and plenty of facilities to accommodate sailors passing through. But you don't need your own boat to enjoy Marathon and its waters.

For a truly different experience, hop on over to Cruisin' Tikis and have a floating tiki bar adventure. Sunset, mangrove and harbor cruises are all available, as is a swim-stop cruise for a chance to jump into the water.

While you're here, you should also visit Pigeon Key, an island that is accessible by boat, trolley or walking the 2.2-mile Old Seven Mile Bridge. It has a museum to explore, either on a guided tour or on your own. The Bridge is open for walking, running, bicycling, rollerblading and, of course, watching the killer sunrises and sunsets.

Best beach: Sombrero Beach is one of the prettiest beaches in the Florida Keys—not to mention one of the best beaches in Florida . And it's not just popular with humans; sea turtles nest here between April and October.

Where to eat: For any meal, stop by Castaway, which has been serving guests for more than 70 years. Or make a night of it at Hide Away Café, which has an extensive wine list.

Where to stay: The Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club is set on the waterfront and gives you a taste of marina life. Lime Tree Bay Resort on Long Key has spacious townhomes for rent.

The Lower Keys

Mile marker: 40–4

After crossing the Old Seven Mile Bridge out of Marathon, you'll find yourself in the Lower Keys, where natural habitats and wildlife refuges thrive. It's no wonder this part of the Florida Keys is known as the Natural Keys. You might even want to consider taking an electric vehicle on this road trip so you don't disturb the animals.

Your best chance to spot a native Key deer, a subspecies of the Virginia white-tailed deer that somehow made its way south, may be in the National Key Deer Refuge, comprised of 9,200 acres stretching from Bahia Honda Key to Sugarloaf Key on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. More than 20 endangered and threatened plant and animal species can be found within the refuge. Take a quiet walk at dusk or dawn for your best chance to glimpse a Key deer, or join a ranger-led tour to learn more about the area.

Aside from all the eco-friendly fun, Stock Island is well worth a stop. Their maritime history goes back generations, and the marina is filled with shrimping and fishing boats. Artists have been flocking to Stock Island, too, and share their works in galleries dotted across the small island.

Best beach: The shallow, clear water and white sand at Calusa Beach make it a locals' favorite. The beach is a perfect spot for snorkeling too.

Where to eat: In addition to the freshest of seafood, Big Pine Rooster serves up ribs and a special-recipe meatloaf. Or sip like the locals at No Name Pub, located on Big Pine Key.

Where to stay: Consider the waterfront Sugarloaf Lodge , stay in an Airstream at Big Pine Key Resort  or pop a tent on one of the reserved campsites at Bahia Honda State Park.

Mile marker: 4–0

You've made it to the end! Closer to Cuba than Miami, Key West is known for its nightly sunset celebrations, party atmosphere and laissez-faire vibe, but it's really so much more.

If you're a writer or bookworm, you'll certainly want to make plans to visit the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where you should keep an eye out for the famous six-toed cats. Then wander through Key West's Bahama Village, a 12-block area of historic homes and restaurants.

Consider a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park, about 70 miles west of Key West in the Gulf of Mexico, where you'll find some hidden gems . The island, accessible by boat or seaplane, is popular for snorkeling and feeling like you're on your own private island, not to mention touring the Civil War–era fort.

Best beach: Fort Zachary Taylor Beach—or Fort Zach, as locals call it—predates the Civil War and boasts the island's very best sandy stretch.

Where to eat: No visit to Key West is complete without a meal at Blue Heaven, where you can dine with wandering roosters for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Or snag a spot on the tiny balcony at Santiago's Bodega for tapas and flowing wine.

Art and history in the Florida Keys

Road-tripping from Key Largo to Key West, it's easy to appreciate all the natural beauty. That said, the Keys aren't just a terrific destination for eco-travelers, but artists and history buffs too.

We boarded an empty double decker bus and 2 hours later after around 20 pick ups we were on our way! There was little instruction when we arrived and had around 30 minutes for Air boat ride which was OK but nothing special. We didn’t see any Alligators or any Wildlife of interest which is no fault of organisers. After 40 minute ride we had to stand in a queue for Alligator show. Another 30minute wait before entering. The show was fine. We could not stomach another 3 hour plus ride back to our destination and alighted at 5th Street for a welcome drink (hardly had time at Everglades)at a bar and Uber back. A message from the host advising they would be late would have been nice given how early we had to get up to meet. I also expressed the bus temperature was freezing and I had the host to turn down the AC at one of the stops. She said she would but once again, the temperature throughout was at a max and made it very uncomfortable for all of us travelling, having to find extra clothes to cover yourself with. This boat tour was disappointing and bizarre: confusing meet up location and time, poor communication, and shorter than advertised. -their confirmation email says to meet 45 minutes early. We went to the advertised meet up location (which is hard to find), and no one was there. When we returned closer to the time of our tour, about 20 minutes early, the aqua tour employee told us there was a problem, and that the tour would actually be running a half hour later than advertised. They had everyone (about 50 people who were waiting for the tour) wait in the sun. -when we did finally start moving along to get on the bus, they made us take a photo before boarding. We attempted to decline multiple times, but the employees told us it was mandatory. I understand most tours want to take photos to try to sell to their customers later, but I’ve never been to an attraction/tour that was so emphatic about it being ‘mandatory.’ - this tour was advertised as “millionaire row sightseeing cruise,” but they had us ride in a pirate ship. I’m guessing this was a back up boat since our tour was running late, but they didn’t communicate any of this. -actual tour/narration was OK. Tour guide/DJ gave limited info. Instead we got to visit an island where we could swim, snorkel, kayak or just hang out on the beach. We found lots of cool shells and saw lots of huge hermit crabs. The bus tour started at 3pm and took multiple detours off the route due to traffic. The tour ended up taking about 3 hours. We had to pay $52 to park the rental car for 4 hours, then we had to take a $35 taxi back to the starting location because they told us we had to exit the bus. They did not disclose that we would not get a ride back to the pickup spot. Since we (me and most of the guests) refused to tip, the guide called us “cheap” as we exited the bus. Die to storm our flight cancelled twice therefore I had to ask to move our reservation to the evening. They charged me 15 $ extra for each person to move my reservation to later hour. However they said it has to be a shorter boat ride which is 1 hour only and no guide through the trip. I accepted since we have very limited time in Miami. We rushed to catch the boat with my children, paid 65& for the cap to be on time. When we arrived to the given location, there was no boat and no agent. We were the only one waiting. The boat came late, then took our reservation details but did not take us in since we were the only passenger. It was a water taxi and it is obvious that it is not their main job to make a tour. I tried to get help from the contact person from the company via whatsapp. I explained the situation, asked if they could switch us to a boat that will operate. The person who is called Indira could not help although she was very capable when she was charging extra 15$/person on the phone earlier. I called tripadviser costumer service and explained the situation. They tookquite a long time while I was paying for my internation number. They started the process of refund for the original amount which is not included the extra I paid for moving our boat reservation.
