Tracy Arm Fjord Glacier Cruise

A classic glacier cruise not to be missed.

tracy arm glacier cruise

Tracy Arm, a classic fjord, has it all- tidewater and elevated glaciers, breathtaking mountains and sheer rock walls that reach up over a mile high with waterfalls that tumble down to the emerald green water, and Alaska’s largest icebergs.

  • PRICE: $209-$249 Adult / $179-$209 Child
  • DURATION: 7-8 HOURS
  • ACTIVITY LEVEL: EASY
  • LOCATION: JUNEAU

Located about 45 miles south of Juneau, Tracy Arm, a classic fjord, stands out as a “must see” for any Alaska vacation. Full day cruises depart from downtown Juneau and includes Alaska’s greatest combination of mountains, waterfalls, wildlife, glaciers, and icebergs.

The face of Sawyer is a little more than a half mile wide, so there is plenty of space for the vessel to be at the face of the glacier. The boat’s engine gets turned off at the glacier so you can listen to the ice crackle and pop and take in the sights uninterrupted while you wait for the glacier to calve.

Sawyer Glacier is an active tidewater glacier, which means it “calves” or breaks off. Pieces of ice anywhere from the size of a small car to a cruise ship fall off the face of the glacier and hit the water with a thunderous roar. No matter how many times you visit Sawyer Glacier, it is always a thrill to see a calving event.

The water at the end of the fjord is nearly 600 feet deep and when underwater calving takes place, the ice remains intact, giving us Alaska’s largest icebergs. In other glacier areas, the calved ice generally crumbles. Underwater calvings surface like giant submarines that rise over 250 feet and then settle into the water like large, blue ships.

The ice in Tracy Arm interferes with the sonar of killer whales, so it is the perfect place for hundreds of harbor seals to have their pups in the summer months.

The icebergs are framed by sheer mountain peaks that reach over 7,000 feet. Waterfalls flow from the ice-covered mountains to the jade colored inland sea.

The main focus of the cruise is the fjord and the glacier, and the wildlife is an added bonus. The guides will do their best to find you mountain goats, whales, bears, harbor seals, and birds.

Tracy Arm is the summer home for pigeon guillemots, kittiwakes and arctic terns. Mountain goats are typically seen on the rocky slopes near Sawyer Glacier. Mountain goats are more likely to come farther down the mountain on cloudier days. Stephens Pass and Holkham Bay are the best places to spot eagles, bears, and whales. Whales are seen on about 85% of our trips.

INCLUDED: Picnic Lunch, Bottled water, hot beverages, professional naturalist.

RESTRICTIONS:  Children must be at least 4 years of age to go on the cruise. Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase on board. Bring cash for purchases and gratuities for the crew.

CANCELLATION: For groups of 10 or less, cancellation must be 7 days in advance for a refund. For larger groups contact us.

WHAT TO WEAR:  Be prepared for rain and cold weather. The weather in Southeast Alaska can change dramatically very quickly.  The temperature in Tracy Arm is colder than in downtown Juneau, be prepared for a drop in temperature.  Wear warm layers, warm boots, and a rain jacket/windbreaker.  Hats and gloves are also recommended.  Make sure to bring sunglasses as well.

MEETING INSTRUCTIONS: Meeting location is at 76 Egan Drive, in downtown Juneau, directly across the street from the Four Points Sheraton Hotel.  You will check in at the top of the dock at the Seadrome Building. Check in 15 minutes prior to departure time.

Tracy Arm Fjord: Cruising Through Icebergs in a Stunning Fjord

Tracy Arm Fjord, a stunning glacier-carved landscape brimming with natural wonders, stretches just south of Alaska’s capital Juneau. Majestic sawtooth mountains tower over glistening icebergs and breathtaking tidewater glaciers carved over millennia. This pristine wilderness beckons visitors to explore its vibrant blues up close by cruise ship. Prepare to traverse the beautiful icy frontiers, where primordial glaciers sculpt the edges of the fjord. A cruise through Tracy Arm Fjord grants the opportunity to witness calving tidewater glaciers firsthand and view icebergs of all sizes, with plunging cliffs as a backdrop. Continue reading to learn how to plan the quintessential Tracy Arm Fjord cruise adventure.

Arrival in Scenic Juneau, Alaska’s Capital City

Tracy Arm Fjord

Upon docking in Juneau, it’s time to board your cruise liner sailing towards Tracy Arm Fjord. The city of Juneau allows access to Tracy Arm Fjord’s immense wilderness landscapes, located just to the south. As the cruise ship casts off into the Stephens Passage, elation grows among passengers – the promise of an unforgettable voyage through one of Alaska’s most picturesque fjords lies ahead.

Cruising Tracy Arm Fjord’s Azure Waters

Entering Tracy Arm Fjord, steep slopes enrobed in emerald forests ascend dramatically from the fjord’s deep azure waters. Enormous icebergs drift past, detached from the twin tidewater glaciers farther inland. Resounding cracks echo through the mountains as chunks of ice split off and submerged into the sea. Approaching the actively calving glaciers, the air becomes markedly chillier. The glaciers’ vibrant blue compressed ancient ice emerges, streaked with bands of rock and sediment from the valley walls. Witnessing the immutable force as these tidewater giants gradually yet indefatigably sculpt the topography over thousands of years is breathtaking. One can envision how these massive glaciers carved this elongated, narrow fjord between sheer peaks in antiquity.

Beholding the Extraordinary Sawyer Glacier

fjord floating ice chunks

The cruise ship steers nearer the magnificent icy facade of Sawyer Glacier, one of the spectacular twin tidewater glaciers at Tracy Arm Fjord’s end. A blast of frigid air sets in as tremendous chunks of ice split and plunge into the water. The loud sound reverberates through the air akin to rolling thunder. Bright blue and white ice fragments of all dimensions float amid the inky waters. Several impressed passengers kneel to photograph the remarkable scene while others observe in admiration. Sawyer Glacier ascends over 250 feet high, extending an impressive 2 miles wide. Its staggering ancient immensity makes one feel infinitesimal in comparison. Observing this frozen behemoth inexorably transforming the landscape is humbling.

Appreciating Tracy Arm Fjord’s Untamed Beauty

Gazing upward from Sawyer Glacier ‘s base, the surrounding Chilkat Mountains’ precipitous ridgelines dominate the skyline. Craggy pinnacles and cliffs ascend directly skyward from the sea to elevations over 7,000 feet. Lush emerald woodlands blanket the lower mountainsides. This is wilderness in its rawest form, devoid of any human imprint. One develops an intense appreciation for the unspoiled natural magnificence of this Alaskan fjord sculpted by massive glaciers steadily advancing over countless millennia.

Cruising Toward the Spellbinding Twin Sawyer Glaciers

Fjord Alaska

Farther inland, the cruise ship proceeds toward the astounding Twin Sawyer Glaciers, where two colossal tidewater glaciers – Sawyer and South Sawyer – merge at the fjord’s terminus. Enormous glacial blue icebergs drift past, occasional ones providing a lounging platform for lethargic harbor seals. The thunderous roar of ancient ice calving quickens as the glaciers draw nearer. Approaching, the brilliance and enormity of the twin icy blue facades elicit audible amazement from passengers. These glaciers are even more mesmerizing up close than Sawyer Glacier. Gazing upward in disbelief, one struggles to fathom the tremendous scale and primordial natural force of these sluggishly inching twin rivers of ice descending the mountains.

Returning Along the Fjord

The cruise regretfully retreats from the stunning icy vista at the journey’s conclusion, commencing the return voyage through Tracy Arm Fjord. Late afternoon’s softened light casts the landscape in shifting tones. Heading back, all eyes remain fixed on the multitudes of floating icebergs of all dimensions. The glacial exhibition continues, with more icy chunks splitting off with a splash as if waving farewell. This homeward passage gifts additional time to absorb the hypnotic scenery within this remote Alaskan gem.

Disembarking in Juneau

Arriving back in Juneau, wonderstruck passengers disembark after traversing Tracy Arm Fjord’s meandering waters and colossal tidewater glaciers. Though the dramatic Alaskan landscapes recede from sight, unforgettable memories of this once-in-a-lifetime journey remain vibrantly etched. After the voyage, the profound natural majesty and stunning glaciers witnessed in the Tracy Arm Fjord will continue to shape people’s imaginations and dreams for years to come.

Planning an Unforgettable Tracy Arm Cruise

Tracy Arm Fjord Alaska

For the best glacier viewing, visit Tracy Arm Fjord in mid to late summer. Choose a trip into the back of the fjord to see the stunning twin tidewater glaciers. Pack binoculars and a camera with a telephoto lens to capture the splendor. Combine the cruise with a helicopter glacier landing or kayaking for more perspectives. Opt for a cruise line like Princess or Holland America that uses smaller excursion vessels adept at maneuvering the fjord’s twists. For more inspiration, explore TracyArmFjord’s glacier webcams, photographs, and detailed visitor information regarding this phenomenal Alaskan natural wonder.

Tracy Arm Fjord’s Alluring Ancient Wilderness

Tracy Arm Fjord offers an opportunity to voyage through the unspoiled Alaskan wilderness, where towering mountains, primordial glaciers, and icebergs calved from tidewater giants enthrall. Cruising these glacier-scoured waters provides an unforgettable glimpse into an evolving icy landscape untouched by humankind. The raw natural splendor, glacial blue hues, and cracking ancient ice ceaselessly astound and inspire awe at the fundamental forces still shaping Alaska’s sublime vistas. This breathtaking fjord surely ranks among Alaska’s most enchanting destinations.

8 Great Reasons To Tour Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska

Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska

Most travelers pick from  Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay National Park when planning a cruise to Alaska. While they deliver in the scenic department, don’t discount a cruise to Tracy Arm, a classic fjord near Juneau.

Named after former Navy Secretary Benjamin Tracy, a Tracy Arm Fjord cruise offers a contrasting journey through a narrow passage with steep rock walls.

Surrounded by the Tongass National Forest, the Tracy Arm Fords Terror Wilderness contains both Tracy Arm and Endicott Arm. A cruise to the Twin Sawyer Glaciers or Dawes Glacier offers topography beyond imagination.

What Is A Fjord?

Fjords are the result of glaciation. As glaciers melt, they sometimes carve deep channels, leaving “U-shaped” valleys with vertical walls. Some of the best fjords are found in Norway.

However, those cruising the inside passage can choose from Tracy Arm, Endicott Arm, and College Fjord. Tracy Arm is a bit narrower and suited to mid-sized or smaller ships. Endicott Arm has a wider passage and can accommodate the larger vessels like the Quantum of the Seas.

When docking in Ketchikan, guests can also take a boat tour to the Misty Fjords National Monument.

With narrow channels, cruise ships glide through the waterway slowly. Slow sailing provides  great way to absorb yourself in the breathtaking scenery surrounding you.

On cruises to Tracy Arm, guests enjoy 30 miles of mountain peaks, sheer rock faces, plummeting waterfalls, and emerald-green water. Tracy Arm offered one of the  best Alaska cruise itineraries  if you prefer a fjord experience.

A cruise ship, ice and waterfall in Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska

Where is Tracy Arm Fjord?

Tracy Arm is located 70 miles north of Petersburg on Mitkof Island. It’s 45 miles south of Juneau in southeastern Alaska. Cruise ships generally access the Alaska fjord from Holkham Bay as they sail north through the Stephens Passage.

Early in the cruise season, large ice flow blocks the passage of ships trying to reach the Twin Sawyer Glaciers. So, those wanting to see the Twin Sawyer Glacier should avoid booking their  Alaska cruise in early May.

Once the ice has melted, those wanting to get closer to the ice and waterfalls can take a Tracy Arm Fjord & Glacier Explorer excursion. The adventure starts by boarding a small catamaran.

The vessel is built for exploration and intricate maneuverability, allowing guests to feel the spray of waterfalls.

Feeling the spray of a large waterfall in Tracy Arm

If you board the catamaran from a larger ship, the tour lasts five to six hours and ends in Juneau. From Juneau, fjord tours last seven hours.

If you’ve visited Glacier Bay National Park before and considering another option, here are some reasons to book a cruise to Tracy Arm.

1. It’s Generally Cheaper

For many, an Alaskan cruise is a bucket list destination. Most travelers choose an itinerary to Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay. Only two cruise ships a day can access Glacier Bay, so that itinerary commands higher prices.

The moss-filled cliffs of Tracy Arm Fjord in Alaska

So, as a less popular itinerary, you can find cruises to Tracy Arm at lower prices. Paying a lower price for your cruise means you can spend more on shore excursions.

If you book a cruise in the shoulder season, you can find itineraries that package Tracy Arm with another glacier viewing. I’ve taken two cruises to the fjord, and both sailed to Hubbard Glacier too.

2. Cascading Waterfalls

Pictures of Tracy Arm Fjord don’t do it justice. With deep valleys and snowpack in winter, the landscape produces rushing waterfalls as the snow melts. To say the waterfalls are majestic is an understatement.

The cascades vary from torrents of icy white water to gentle strings of angel hair. Some breathtaking examples plummet 1000 feet into the emerald waters below.

With constant melting snow, the sheer granite faces glisten like polished stones from a rock tumbler. The waterfalls are awe-inspiring at the start of the Alaska cruise season, as winter transitions into the warmer seasons.

The Tongass National Forests surround a plethora of cascades, giving them almost a lush tropical appearance (without the temperatures).

Small cascade in Tracy Arm

There’s a peacefulness to cruising in a fjord. Simon and Garfunkel’s “the sound of silence” is fitting for the gentle maneuver through the emerald waters. The silence was only broken by bergy bits hitting the side of the vessel or the sound of birds overhead.

3. Harbor Seal Sightings

Harbor seals make their home in Tracy Arm Fjord. The sheltered bay is an ideal breeding ground to keep their pups safe from hungry Orca in Stephen’s Passage.

The giant ice floes provide napping spots for hundreds of seals. Keep your binoculars handy and look for the black spots on the ice

In May, harbor seals give birth on the large icebergs near the glacier’s terminus. It’s the survival of the fittest as bald eagles swoop down to feast on the afterbirth or unattended baby seal.

Approaching the glacier, the colony of harbor seals pose lazily on ice floes. Staring back at passengers, they seem unconcerned about the presence of a large ship.

Looking at South Sawyer Glacier, all those little dark spots are harbor seals.

Harbor seals on an iceberg at Tracy Arm

Sea lions sometimes bark up a storm on the rocks, and their noisy chatter echoes off the sheer rock walls. But seals and sea lions aren’t the only occupants of the fjord.

4. Wildlife Sightings Are Prevalent

Cruising into Tracy Arm offers a chance to see Alaskan wildlife. Humpback whales and Orca frequent the area outside Holkham Bay. It’s not unusual to see whales along Stephen’s Passage and inside the bay.

Bring a pair of compact binoculars if you’re a bird watcher. Bird species include arctic terns, tufted puffins, pigeon guillemots, pelagic cormorants, and herring gulls.

Along the shorelines, keep your eyes peeled for black and brown bears foraging for food. High up on the cliffs by the icefield, the pale-colored mountain goats are easy to spot, testing their agility skills on the vertical landscape. The goats favor the slopes near the North Sawyer Glacier.

5. You’ll Enjoy Two Glaciers

At the end of the fjord, cruise-goers enjoy the face of two tidewater glaciers or icefields which touch the ocean. Filling the bay with ice, the South Sawyer Glacier is the larger of the two, at over 31 miles long, and originates in British Columbia, Canada.

North Sawyer or Sawyer Glacier may not be as impressive, maybe due to its accessibility. As it retreats, the narrowing channel makes it difficult for larger cruise ships to maneuver.

Like its southern sister, it starts in British Columbia and travels 22 miles to reach Tracy Arm. Your approach to the glaciers will be affected by the ever-changing ice conditions.

Sawyer Glacier

When cruising to Tracy Arm Fjord, you may be treated to the wondrous action of calving. A thunderous noise echoes in the bay as ice cracks and falls from the glacier’s toe.

Sometimes, they create a ripple in the still waters. Other times, they produce a vast sea swell.

The increasing amount of floating ice is a welcoming sign for harbor seals who use the icy platforms to laze in the sun.

6. The Glaciers Are Retreating

Like Mendenhall Glacier outside of Juneau, the twin Sawyer Glaciers are rapidly retreating. The rising snow line and thinner winter snowpack are affecting the stability of the ice mass.

Sawyer Glacier (which is harder to access) retreats at a rate of 80+ feet (almost 25 meters) a year. Nearby, the South Sawyer Glacier is losing more than 300 feet (91 meters) a year. As the retreat continues, the valley begins to narrow.

As the channel to the glacier narrows, it’s possible that cruise ships won’t have access in the future.

Recently, a sandbar appeared in front of Sawyer Glacier due to its retreat. It may be a matter of time before the northern ice mass disappears behind a mountain.

7. Its Mystical Weather

My Royal Caribbean Tracy Arm itinerary arrived in the fjord at 5 am. There was an abundance of low-lying clouds and mist in the fjord.

The steep cliffs prevented the sunlight from penetrating some angles in the meandering waterway. So, the fog lifted slowly.

With the sunlight not quite hitting the landscape, visions of the “twilight zone” came to mind. The fog-ladened panoramas exhibited a sense of mystery.

Sun peeking through the clouds at Tracy Arm Fjord in Alaska

While the raindrops fell scantily, they didn’t detract from the magnificence of the scenery.

Even though the Tracy Arm Fjord lies close to Juneau, its weather can contrast greatly. Expect misty peaks, cooler temperatures, and mystical views with steep walls.

8. The Hues Are Fantastic

Once you reach the Sawyer Glacier, you’ll be captivated by its vivid blue tones. The ice in Tracy Arm is dense and absorbs all colors except blue. So, the crystalline structure appears with a beautiful blue tone.

As the terminus calves, those vibrant blue ice masses create incredible floating ice sculptures, some as big as houses. Should you take a Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer excursion, your operator will scoop up some glacier ice to make cocktails.

The fjord waters are a magnificent green color, which varies according to meltwater. During my last visit in the first week of May, the waters exuded a vibrant jade green.

Fjord Viewing

Cruise ships that venture up the narrow fjord spend a few hours sailing at a snail’s pace. Vessels usually open up the bow area for viewing, which is often closed during the cruise. However, this area gets congested as guests jostle for the front-row spots.

If your budget allows, book a stateroom with a balcony. While it may be cold outside by the glaciers, you won’t need to struggle for a viewing spot.

Once you get chilled, step inside your cabin, and enjoy the views from behind the glass. It doesn’t matter whether you have a port or starboard stateroom because you’ll enjoy one side sailing in and the other going out.

Tracy Arm Cruise Vs. Explorer Tour?

Some cruise lines sell a Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer tour. Expect to pay USD 179 to USD 249 per person, depending on your cruise line. Guests board a smaller vessel from their cruise ship, explore Tracy Arm, and meet their ship in Juneau.

The Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer vessel

While cruise ships sail into the fjord, they can’t get as close to the glacier as a smaller vessel. Taking small boat tours means you’ll get closer to waterfalls, icebergs, harbor seals, and the glacier’s terminus.

Bear in mind, while some cruise lines advertise “cruising in Tracy Arm,” sometimes they DON’T sail in the fjord. To have the fjord experience, you must purchase the extra tour.

It’s important to note that the smaller vessels can’t accommodate scooters or strollers. For some, taking the tour could come down to price and whether it’s within your budget.

Since the Explorer tour arrives in Juneau later in the day, it can impact your time to see Alaska’s capital. If you’re set on doing another tour in Juneau, you may want to pass on the Tracy Arm excursion and just enjoy it by cruise ship.

Should you stay in Juneau, you can purchase the Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer from Adventure Bound Alaska or Allen Marine Tours.

Is Tracy Arm Worth Seeing?

A cruise to Tracy Arm Fjord contrasts significantly with an itinerary to Glacier Bay or Hubbard Glacier. To increase your chance of wildlife sightings and see plummeting waterfalls, you need to choose Tracy Arm.

I was captivated by the scenery in the Alaska fjord, and even after two visits, I plan to experience its beauty again.

Tracy Arm itineraries are available from Vancouver, Seattle, and San Francisco. Holland America and Windstar allows guest to combine their cruise with a land itinerary.

Since ice often blocks the approach in the early months, choose an itinerary from June onwards to avoid the disappointment of not seeing the twin Sawyer Glaciers.

Book the excursion on the smaller vessel if you want a closer look and a different perspective of viewing the fjord.

Happy travels ~ Karen

Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Cruise Excursion

Doug Parker

Traversing the Tracy Arm Fjord is a breathtaking highlight for many adventure bound Alaska cruisers. The majestic beauty on display is both jawdropping and the type of thing one truly has to see to believe. The area includes glaciers, wildlife, and even a few icebergs.

But to get the most out of the experience, it’s worth booking an excursion which will bring you as close as possible to a glacier.

unnamed 1 1

Located off Stephen’s Passage in Southeast Alaska (45 miles south of Juneau) is Tracy Arm Fjord, which highlights the twin Sawyer Glaciers. The glaciers are actually located at the end of Tracy Arm, so you’ll have to travel through the fjord for a while before you see it. The channel can get up to a mile wide at some points.

Fact: Although there are over 10,000 glaciers in Alaska, only 616 are officially named.

Screen Shot 2019 09 16 at 10.51.43 AM

Usually, the ship will get as close as it is allowed to and then slowly rotate 360-degrees around the glacier so that both sides of the ship can take in the incredible views.

But to get closer to the glacial actions, you’ll have to book an excursion. Of course, because this particular excursion takes place from the ship as opposed to the traditional type which involves going to a port, there won’t be any third-party options available.

The ship’s excursion will be the only game in town. Although the price varies depending on the cruise line, you can expect to pay somewhere around $190 per person for this experience.

Note : If you’re in Juneau for an extended amount of time, you can book an excursion through Allen Marine Tours.

Tracy Arm Fjord Cruise Excursion

IMG 9606

The shore excursion starts once you board a high-speed catamaran in Tracy Arm Fjord. The vessel docks alongside your cruise ship and you board it from one of the lower decks.

Once aboard the smaller vessel, you’ll be able to relax in a spacious, warm cabin, surrounded by broad windows as your experienced boat captain takes you past some of the stunning sights. You might witness seals resting on floating icebergs or some of the regions stunning waterfalls.

Binoculars are provided on the catamaran, but you should consider bringing a pair of your own to use throughout your cruise. Even if it’s not inside Tracy’s Arm Fjord, you’re almost guaranteed to see whales off in the distance or bears playing on the banks of the river at some point during your Alaska cruise.

FullSizeRender

As your tour boat enters the inner reaches of Tracy Arm, the onboard naturalist will give you a great deal of information about the area you’re exploring, along with facts about Sawyer Glacier.

Insider Tip : For the best views of the glacier, you’ll want to walk outside and head to the upper observation deck.

While sailing through this ice-carved fjord, you will cruise beneath cliffs that tower 4,000 feet above the jade-colored water. There will also be frequent stops along the way to see and photograph wildlife such as bald eagles, bears, arctic terns, pigeon guillemots, mountain goats and harbor seals.

IMG 9573

The remarkable maneuverability of the catamaran allows you to get extremely close to the always-changing face of Sawyer Glacier. If the timing is right, you might even get to see what the natives call “white thunder,” which is when massive spires of ice break from the glacier and crash into the sea.

Fact : The ice that breaks off the glacier above or below the surface is what we know as blue icebergs.

If you get hungry or thirsty, the catamaran will have a stocked bar on the main level along with snacks and hot drinks. They’ll also have a selection of Alaskan Brewing Company beers, as well as souvenir books and postcards that are available for purchase.

IMG 9599

There are also two restrooms located on the back of the catamaran. If you have mobility issues, you’ll want to sit this tour out because of the constant rocking of the boat when it’s docked next to the ship and the series of stairs to load the boat. In some cases, the tour will specifically say that it is not wheelchair accessible.

The minimum age for our excursion was 5 years old, so you’ll want to check your cruise line’s excursion policy.

Depending on ice conditions in the channel, your ship could be diverted to neighboring Endicott Arm, where you’ll experience Dawes Glacier instead. The ice diversions can’t be predicted, and it’s ultimately about the safety of the ship.

Final Thoughts

IMG 9502

This is a great tour and well worth the money spent to experience the face of a glacier.

Once your ship arrives, y ou’ll be able to see the tidewater glaciers from the cruise ship. But for the best viewing and photo opportunities, you’ll want to book this excursion and take the two-hour tour to come face-to-face with the glacier, an opportunity that many people will never have in their lifetimes.

tracy arm fjord

This tour sometimes sells out so consider booking it before your cruise. Due to local regulations, only a limited number of excursions per day are allowed to enter the area.

Make sure you pack warm clothes for the Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier cruise excursion. It can get chilly on the water and windy in the fjords. If you plan to spend time on the observation deck on top of the boat, you may want to consider a warm hat and a pair of gloves.

Tracy Arm’s Sawyer Glacier truly provides a breathtaking glimpse of nature’s majesty.

Tracy Arm Fjord: What To Expect On Cruises

Are you ready to cruise to Tracy Arm fjord, one of the “most dramatically stunning fjords in Alaska”? Here’s what to expect on Tracy Arm fjord tours.

Don't blink. Every second you spend in Tracy Arm fjord is incredible. John Muir called it "one of the most dramatically stunning fjords of Southeast Alaska." And that’s no exaggeration, the drama is everywhere. Waterfalls rush down from misty mountain peaks. There are ice floes as big as cars. Glittering, sapphire-blue glaciers. Portly seal pups who haul out on the frozen chunks and pose for a barrage of camera snaps. Bears that lumber out of the forest, ready for their close-up.

Tracy Arm fjord is up there with  Glacier Bay National Park  and  Denali National Park  as the most incredible destinations in Alaska.

Below you will find some practical information on Tracy Arm fjord to help you decide whether it should be on your  Alaska cruise  itinerary.

Where Is Tracy Arm Fjord?

Tracy Arm fjord is 50 miles southeast of  Juneau, Alaska  off Holkham Bay and adjacent to Stephen's Passage. Tracy Arm and Endicott Arm are part of the vast Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness. Twin Sawyer Glaciers, North and South fill Tracy Arm with ice. Dawes Glacier is at the end of Endicott Arm.

How Long Is Tracy Arm Fjord?

Tracy Arm fjord is over 30 miles long and gets steadily icier farther in.

Can I See Tracy Arm Fjord On A Cruise?

If Tracy Arm is on your Alaska cruise itinerary and it's not blocked with ice, you may cruise past its glacier-carved cliffs and icebergs. However, it is a narrow inlet and cruise ships are too large to get close to the Sawyer Glacier faces.

If you're dying to see the twin Sawyer Glaciers up close, look for Tracy Arm Fjord tours in our  Alaska shore excursions . You can board a high-speed catamaran right from the cruise ship and zig-zag close to the glaciers. Whether you experience Tracy Arm by cruise or catamaran, bring binoculars and warm rain gear, as it is known for wildlife sightings and drizzle. There are also flightseeing opportunities from Juneau but cruises are more popular.

About The Twin Sawyer Glaciers

South Sawyer Glacier and North (sometimes called Sawyer Glacier) are known for their vivid blue hue and filling Tracy Arm fjord with amazing ice sculptures. Both put on great calving shows. If you're on a Tracy Arm fjord tour, you might witness ice thundering into the sea and even feel the ripple of a wave beneath your boat. Incredible.

The larger of the two, South Sawyer Glacier is simply stunning and goes deep underwater. Look for wildlife—seals like to rest on ice floes with their young because they're safer from whales. Mountain goats also love the cliffs near the North Sawyer Glacier.

During our recent cruise on Holland America Line in Alaska, we booked the popular Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer shore excursion during our stop in Juneau. Did this popular activity live up to the hype? Find out in our latest shore excursion review.

Booking the Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer Excursion

There are many fun and exciting shore excursions in Juneau , Alaska. From visiting the Mendenhall Glacier, to whale watching, to dining at the popular Tracy’s Crab Shack, we have been lucky enough to experience them all on previous cruises to Alaska.

Mendehall Glacier Visitor Center

This time around, we hoped to test out the popular Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer excursion offered by most cruise lines. Unfortunately, the tour was already sold out on our cruise. So, we settled on a day in downtown Juneau with a ride on the Mount Roberts Tramway.

Without wanting to get our hopes up too much, we did also add our names to Holland America’s waitlist for this excursion. As luck would have it, we learned the day before that slots had opened up for the tour. So, we immediately swapped out our shore excursions.

While the tour company offers both one way and roundtrip excursions, the one offered through Holland America’s shore excursions was the roundtrip tour. This excursion was listed as approximately 7 hours for the cost of $259.95 per person. Yes, Alaska cruise excursions are pricey, but they are well worth it.

Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer Excursion Review

Of note, some cruise lines offer the one way tour. With this tour, the cruise ship actually meets up with the small excursion boat to pick up (or drop off) the passengers. Thus, this tour will be shorter in length.

Getting Ready For Some Sightseeing

We had an afternoon port stop in Juneau, from 1 to 10 pm. Our tour was scheduled to meet outside on the pier shortly after arrival. We were quickly able to find our tour provider and were loaded onto a bus with a quick scan of our virtual tickets.

The bus then drove us literally around the corner to board our sightseeing vessel. Now, we were ready to set off for our 7-hour tour. Luckily, it was close to 70 degrees and sunny.

This Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer excursion is provided by Allen Marine Tours . The tour includes travel by a deluxe jetboat out to Tracy Arm Fjord with up-close views of the Sawyer Glacier. There is also a bag lunch provided which consisted of a sandwich, chips, an apple, and a bottle of water.

Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer Excursion Review

The boat itself has an indoor seating area on the lower level with a restroom and a small galley for concessions. There is also complimentary coffee, hot cocoa, and tea. The top deck consists of a standing outdoor viewing area, which we were free to use following the initial safety briefing.

Of course, you will want to be outside for at least a portion of this tour, so make sure to pack the appropriate layers. It will be significantly colder and windier as you are jetting onwards toward the glacier.

Tracy Arm Fjord is about an hour and 45 minutes by jetboat from Juneau. From there, it is another 45 minutes down to the South Sawyer Glacier.

During our trip out to the Fjord, our naturalist Robert offered intermittent narration, a few jokes, and bar service.

Finally Entering Tracy Arm Fjord En Route to Sawyer Glacier

Finally passing the buoys that marked the entrance to the Fjord, and where glaciers used to reside until the 1800s, this is where the real fun began.

Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer Excursion Review

Once inside the fjord, the granite mountainsides, carved by centuries of glacial activity, glowed in the basking sunlight. We also had some wildlife sightings, from sea lions soaking up rays to mountain goats darting the hillside.

Passing waterfalls and other scenic landscapes, our Captain would periodically slow down to allow us to capture it all.

However, it was about three hours into the trip when we finally got our first glimpse of the South Sawyer Glacier face. Maneuvering around spectacular blue icebergs, the Captain did warn us that he could only get as close as the ice would allow. If we could not get close enough, we could head to the north face of the glacier instead.

tracy arm glacier cruise

Luckily, the Captain was able to carefully navigate our vessel within a quarter mile of this majestic natural wonder. At close to a mile wide, with peaks rising up to 800 feet above sea level, we got closer to the Sawyer Glacier than we ever expected.

I guess this is why there was a waiting list for this tour! Pictures and descriptions just don’t do the tour justice.

With the favorable sea conditions and warm weather, we stayed for close to an hour admiring this glacial wonder. We were able to take plenty of photos and videos. We also got to see and hear small calving events and appreciate how much the glacier has retreated since our last visit in 2014.

Then, we set off on the long trek back to the ship. This took about 3 hours, making for a very long day. Thankfully, glacier ‘ritas were on hand, and the bag lunch served as our dinner for the evening.

Recap of the Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer Excursion

While this tour is long and rather pricey, we would certainly recommend booking the Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer excursion during a visit to Juneau.

The tour company offered a top notch experience with a skilled captain and a knowledgeable naturalist onboard the vessel. The combination of this and the great weather allowed for an unforgettable day visiting the Sawyer Glacier. We were able to get more up close and personal with the glacier than we ever imagined.

Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer Excursion Review

In the event that weather doesn’t allow for a visit to Tracy Arm Fjord and the Sawyer Glacier, the tour will be modified to explore Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier.

Booking this tour through your cruise line is the best option. Given the unpredictability of weather conditions, the tour may run longer like ours did. By booking with the cruise line, you are guaranteed that the ship will wait for you to return.

Tracy Arm vs Glacier Bay: Visiting Alaska’s Fjords

By: Author Mona Marks

Posted on Last updated: October 14, 2023

Categories Alaska , DESTINATIONS

Alaska is a dream cruise destination for many holidaymakers. The ruggedness, seclusion, spectacular scenery, and wildlife cater to many interests. Notably, Alaska is home to roughly 27 000 glaciers , some of which are only accessible by boat. When planning Alaska cruise excursions , many folks want to know as between Tracy Arm vs Glacier Bay which is better.

Tracy Arm and Glacier Bay are fjords that offer a scenic getaway for people interested in nature and the tundra regions. Below, we’ll investigate both areas in more detail – what makes them special, their similarities, and the reasons for visiting these majestic preserves. So, if you are planning an Alaska itinerary, keep reading for an in-depth look at these two popular destinations.

What Is A Fjord?

You may be wondering what exactly is a Fjord anyway? Here’s a quick answer.

A fjord is a long and narrow inlet that is typically U-shaped and has steep walls. Fjords are created when a glacier melts, leaving a deep depression in the landscape. The word “fjord” comes from a Norwegian word that means “bay.”

Fjords are found in Norway, Iceland, Greenland, and Alaska. They can be hundreds of miles long and dozens of miles wide. They are often surrounded by snow-capped mountains and lush green valleys.

Fjords usually have a very deep water column that runs thousands of feet below sea level. This high water column results from glacial erosion: the weight of the ice sheet pushing down on the land scrapes away the surface layer of rock, revealing the harder bedrock beneath.

Overview of Glacier Bay

Glacier Bay is at the heart of the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, and it is aptly named for its stunning glacier formations. The national park is on the southeastern coast of Alaska and was proclaimed a national monument in 1925 .

Glacier Bay offers visitors many spectacular views of wildlife and the rugged tundra. The tide in the bay is of special interest, which rises and falls by as much as 20ft (vertically) twice a day.

The glaciers of Glacier Bay are receding (shrinking), along with most of the other melting glaciers in Alaska . Since the 1950s, there has been approximately 11% less ice than before.

Glacier Bay Physical Characteristics

Glacier Bay National Park protects a wilderness area of roughly 5 129 square miles (3 282 560 acres), which includes Glacier Bay, Mount Fairweather, and the Alsek River.

Glacier Bay is approximately 50 miles long and forms a fjord between the St Elias Mountain Range and the Fairweather Range (in the west). The glaciers the bay is famous for originally moved down from these mountains.

According to the National Park Services of Alaska, there are more than 1 000 glaciers in Glacier Bay (good luck picking your favorite!). Many of these glaciers are terrestrial, but there are several tidewater glaciers.

A tidewater glacier is a glacier that ends in the ocean. The weight of the ice causes the glacier to break off, or calve, chunks of ice that float away as icebergs.

Aside from glaciers, the bay has several islands. These islands are home to many seabirds, which use them as nesting grounds.

Tracy Arm Versus Glacier Bay

Glacier Bay Activities And Points Of Interest

The most obvious draw to Glacier Bay is the spectacular glaciers . Tourists access these glaciers on cruise ships or private vessels.

Johns Hopkins Glacier

The John Hopkins Glacier (JHG) is the largest tidewater glacier in Glacier Bay. It is between 225 and 300 feet high, roughly 200 feet deep (from the waterline), and around 1 mile wide.

JHG is the region’s most “active” glacier and moves (down toward the ocean) at roughly  5 to 12 feet per day, slightly faster than the 8 feet a day recorded in 1970.

Since 1990, the JHG and the Gilman Glacier have joined and separated repeatedly. The most recent join was in 2000 along JHG’s eastern edge. They later separated in 2016.

A standout feature of JHG is that the glacier calves chunks of ice under the water. These chunks of ice “bob” up (often explosively) randomly and provide tourists with a fantastic display. Spectators must keep a safe distance (roughly 2 miles) from the glacier.

Grand Pacific Glacier

The Grand Pacific Glacier (GPG) is considerably slower than the John Hopkins Glacier, with a daily rate of 0.5 to 1 foot. The GPG varies between heights of 65 and 165 feet, is 1.35 miles wide, and stretches for more than 20 miles.

The GPG joined with the Margerie Glacier in 1992; however, they split as the GPG receded. The GPG has a brown hue from rock and dirt moving into it from the Ferris tributary (scraping the surrounding mountains).

Other Activities At Glacier Bay

Aside from visiting the spectacular (and numerous) glaciers, Glacier Bay offers visitors:

  • Wildlife viewing
  • A trip into the Fairweather Mountains
  • Guided tours by park rangers

Be sure to pack a good pair of travel binoculars , so you don’t miss a thing!

Glacier Bay History

Glacier Bay is a lingering testament to the end of the last ice age of roughly 10 000 years ago .

Scientists estimate that the Grand Pacific Glacier covered Glacier Bay roughly 200 years ago (up until roughly 1750, commonly called “the Little Ice Age”). The glacier was over 4000 feet thick and 20 miles across.

Over approximately the last two centuries, the glacier shrank, exposing the Glacier Bay we know today.

tracy arm glacier cruise

During his expeditions in 1880, Captain Lester A. Beardslee of the U.S. navy dubbed the area “Glacier Bay.

In 1980, Alaska authorities proclaimed Glacier Bay a national park and wildlife preserve, and in 1992 the UN declared Glacier Bay a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

Overview of Tracy Arm

Tracy Arm Fjord (Tracy Arm) is roughly 50 miles from the town of Juneau (halfway between Juneau and Petersburg). The U.S. Congress gave the area protected status in 1980 as the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness.

The area is protected and managed to preserve the rugged wilderness area and to ensure that the ecosystem perseveres.

The fjord is at the heart of the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness Area, which forms part of the Tongass National Forest . The area showcases the spectacular scenery as the fjord’s two narrow arms (Tracy and Endicott) cut through the surrounding mountains.

The arms join at Holkham Bay and eventually flow in Stephens Passage.

Visitor access to Tracy Arm is by boat, including cruise ships, personal vessels, and float planes. The glaciers calve frequently, and approaching them is dangerous, so caution (and a safe distance) is advised.

tracy arm glacier cruise

Tracy Arm Physical Characteristics

The Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness area covers roughly 653,179 acres (1020.59 square miles). The area is predominantly Alpine (up to 75%). There are several glaciers in the area (20 to 25% of the area is covered in glaciers and snow fields), with a tidewater glacier at each fjord’s head.

Tracy and Endicott Arms run for roughly 30 miles and are bordered by sheer walls on either side. The narrow “corridors” are often blocked by chunks of calved ice, up to the size of three-story buildings.

The wilderness area houses an Alaskan rainforest consisting of spruce and hemlock. Most of this vegetation grows on slopes and plateaus at 1 500 feet.

The water in the fjord is around 600 feet deep. This deep water sustains massive chunks of ice which calve free from the glaciers and form icebergs (some of the largest in Alaska).

tracy arm glacier cruise

Tracy Arm Activities And Points Of Interest

Tracy Arm has an array of fantastic scenery, including the surrounding mountains, waterfalls, green hills, and glaciers.

The Sawyer Glaciers

There are two Sawyer Glaciers (twins), one in the north and the other in the south. These glaciers are active tidewater glaciers, and cruise ships often cut their engines near the glaciers to listen to the ice breaking while watching enormous chunks break off and land in the ocean.

The North Sawyer Glacier stretches roughly 22 miles through the Coast Mountains into Tracy Arm (in a westerly direction).

The South Sawyer Glacier (located in the east) stretches roughly 33 miles and also runs into Tracy Arm (in a northwesterly direction).

Other Activities At Tracy Arm While Cruising

Although cruise ships don’t anchor anywhere at Tracy Arm, there are many interesting things to see in the area (aside from the glaciers), including:

  • Forested mountains and waterfalls
  • Some cruise ships use smaller boats for closer views of the mountains, tributaries, and glaciers.

Tracy Arm History

In 1899, Ford (a navy crewman) explored the area. During his exploration, he paddled into a narrow channel branching off of Endicott Arm and became trapped by a tidal surge (rip-tide) for six hours .

During the last ice age, glaciers covered the fjord (including the Tracy and Endicott Arms). As the climate warmed, the glacier began moving, cutting a swathe through underlying mountain rock, carving out the present-day fjord.

As the glacier continues to recede, more of the fjord becomes exposed.

Tracy Arm Vs Glacier Bay: Key Facts Compared

Both Tracy Arm and Glacier Bay are spectacular places, but they offer different experiences. Tracy Arm is narrower and has more dramatic ice cliffs. Glacier Bay is much longer and wider with a greater range of scenery, with both tidewater glaciers and terminating glaciers.

Glacier Bay

The National Park Service strictly limits cruise ship traffic into Glacier Bay is strictly limited, and only certain cruise companies have permits to visit at any given time. The Park Service also takes an active role during the day ship’s pass through the park.

National Park Service park rangers come on the ship to talk about important things about the visit, give presentations about the park, offer activities for kids, staff an information desk and answer questions.

Unlike in Tracy Arm, cruise ships cannot send smaller boats out for tours. So you will have to remain some distance from the actual glaciers.

While the glaciers are more plentiful in Glacier Bay, they don’t calve quite as frequently as you find in Tracy Arm.

Glacier Bay cruises provide breathtaking views of majestic glaciers and stunning mountain vistas, with the added bonus of seeing diverse marine wildlife. Spotting humpback whales, orca whales, harbor seals, porpoises, otters and sea lions is an unforgettable experience for those who traverse its waters.

Tracy Arm Fjord

The Tracy Arm fjord provides a sharp contrast to Glacier Bay. Tracy Arm is narrower and more dramatic than other fjords, with sheer granite walls and towering icebergs. Instead of a large bay, the fjord walls are narrow and craggy, with steep rock faces that contain multiple waterfalls.

Ice sometimes thwarts large ships from getting far enough into the fjord to see the twin glaciers. That said, cruise ships often send smaller excursion boats out to get a closer look at Sawyer Glacier. An option completely unavailable in Glacier Bay.

Reasons to Favor Glacier Bay

Although these places share many similarities, when deciding between Tracy Arm versus Glacier Bay, most people recommend Glacier Bay.  This is particularly true if you think this will be your only trip to Alaska.

Glacier Bay is more expansive than Tracy Arm, with many more glaciers to view.

Glacier Bay’s spectacular wildlife is also a prominent reason many people visit the area. There are:

  • 242 bird species
  • 160 fish species (marine and estuarine)
  • A humpback whale sanctuary (also minke whales)
  • Orcas and other dolphins
  • There are roughly 41 mammal species

Glacier Bay bears the significant distinction of being a UNESCO world heritage site .

Finally, Glacier Bay is generally more accessible than Tracy Arm. Although peak tourist season is between May and August, the park is open all year round, making Glacier Bay ideal for most visitors who cannot make the summer months.

Tracy Arm is often blocked by icebergs that calve off the glacier, causing postponed cruises. Glacier Bay does not have this issue.

Reasons to Favor Tracy Arm

The untapped beauty of Tracy Arm is its most significant drawcard. With 3 000-foot mountains surrounding you on either side of a channel that is often only half a mile wide, Tracy Arm is perfect for those looking for a different experience.

Cascading down the mountains are 1,000 foot waterfalls, surrounded by alpine rainforests and an assortment of wildlife as significant as Glacier Bay.

The fact that most people elect to visit Glacier Bay could be why you pick Tracy Arm. With the narrow, steep causeways, Tracy Arm can be difficult to navigate and does not accommodate large tour groups. This limitation means that Tracy Arm is far more secluded, and you are less likely to be disturbed by other, less serene guests.

Closing Thoughts

The contest between which is better to visit, Tracy Arm versus Glacier Bay, is a close race. Both of these Alaskan fjords offer spectacular scenery and geological wonders to admire. Glacier Bay is larger and has more glaciers to see, while Tracy Arm is more secluded and offers more up-close and personal views. Whichever you choose, you’ll be awe-struck by these spectacular natural wonders.

Tracy Arm Fjord Alaska: 10 Best Things to Do

T racy Arm Fjord is a spectacular destination in southeastern Alaska and a must for anyone wishing to experience the natural beauty and wildlife of this part of the world.

Located just 45 miles southeast of Juneau, this fjord is renowned for its spectacular beauty, which includes towering mountains, cascading waterfalls, diverse wildlife, and of course, the impressive Sawyer Glaciers.

Naturalist John Muir called Tracy Arm “one of the most dramatically stunning fjords of Southeast Alaska”, and it’s easy to see why.

The beauty and grandeur of the fjord are truly awe-inspiring and make Tracy Arm a must-visit destination in Alaska.

Whether you’re looking for adventure or to simply take in the stunning scenery, Tracy Arm Fjord has something for everyone.

From wildlife watching to glacier viewing, here are some of the best things to do in Tracy Arm Fjord.

Things to Do in Tracy Arm Fjord

While there is a wide range of activities and things to do in Tracy Arm Fjord, there are a few must-do experiences that should be at the top of everyone’s list.

Adventurers can witness the stunning natural beauty of towering glaciers, turquoise blue icebergs, and cascading waterfalls.

Wildlife lovers can observe bears, eagles, seals, and whales in their natural habitat.

Boat tours are the best way to explore the fjord and get up close to the scenery and wildlife.

Whichever activities you choose to do, Tracy Arm Fjord will leave a lasting impression.

1. View the Sawyer Glaciers

While there are plenty of things to do in Tracy Arm Fjord, one of the main highlights is viewing the Sawyer Glaciers.

One of the most famous glaciers in Alaska, the Sawyer Glaciers are actually two separate glaciers; the North and South.

Both glaciers originate in British Columbia, Canada, and stretch deep underwater into Tracy Arm Fjord.

The South Sawyer Glacier is 30 miles long, but is more difficult to access, and is only visible on a few days a year when there is good weather.

However, the North Sawyer Glacier, often just called Sawyer Glacier, is located at the end of Tracy Arm fjord where it’s more easily visible.

This is the glacier that most boat tours visit. The glacier is white above the water and then turns to an incredible shade of cobalt blue as it stretches underwater. The face of the glacier is about a half mile wide, making it easy to view from the water.

The Sawyer Glaciers are truly awe-inspiring and are among the most active glaciers in Alaska.

They are active tidewater glaciers, so you might get a chance to witness the glaciers calving, where chunks of ice break off the glaciers and fall into the water below.

Cruise ships do visit the glacier, but most are too big to enter into the fjord. However, small boat tours will allow you to get up close to the glacier, where you’ll also have stunning views of the surrounding fjord.

2. Watch for Whales

Tracy Arm Fjord is also known for its incredible wildlife viewing and is home to a variety of whale species, including humpback whales, orcas, and gray whales.

These massive creatures can often be seen breaching and feeding in the fjord’s waters.

During the summer months, humpback whales migrate to this area, and the best time to see them is from May to September.

3. Float Among Icebergs

Another fantastic way to experience Tracy Arm is to take a boat tour and while cruising through Tracy Arm fjord, you’re guaranteed to pass by icebergs.

These icebergs range from small pieces of ice to larger chunks that are big as multi-story buildings and it’s a surreal experience to navigate through the icy waters while surrounded by towering ice formations.

4. Chase Waterfalls (HUGE Ones!)

Tracy Arm Fjord is also home to hundreds of waterfalls, but some of the most impressive are along the narrow channel into the Sawyer Glaciers.

These waterfalls are huge, as they cascade down the steep cliffs into the fjord’s waters – some are over 1,000 feet high!

While the cruise ships aren’t able to enter the fjord, any small boat or catamaran tour will pass by plenty of these stunning waterfalls, and possibly even get close enough that you’ll feel the spray from the water.

5. Sail Through the Fjords

Many cruise ships will cruise by Tracy Arm, but most are too big to sail into the fjord.

The best way to get a closer view of the waterfalls, icebergs, and wildlife is to take a small boat tour.

These boat tours are an excellent way to explore Tracy Arm Fjord and offer an experience that’s hard to beat.

While sailing through the fjord, you’ll be able to see whales and waterfalls and take in the spectacular scenery surrounding you, as well as have the chance for a closer look at the massive glaciers.

6. Take a Helicopter Tour and View from Above

For a different perspective, take a helicopter tour to get a bird’s eye view of this part of Alaska. This is an excellent way to see the glaciers and surrounding landscape from above.

7. Watch for Wildlife

Tracy Arm Fjord is home to a variety of wildlife, including black bears and mountain goats, seals, and sea lions, as well as humpback whales and eagles.

While you may be able to see some animals up close, a good pair of binoculars is also recommended so you can spot mountain goats or black bears in the distance.

During the summer months, you may be able to spot harbor seals with their young pups, or migrating orcas.

Whether you’re looking across the water or watching the shores, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for these amazing creatures during your visit.

8. See Glaciers Calve

One of the most awe-inspiring things to experience in Tracy Arm Fjord is the calving of the glaciers.

This occurs when a large piece of ice breaks off and crashes into the water, often creating a thunderous roar and sending waves throughout the fjord.

These pieces can be anywhere from small chunks to large sections.

The Sawyer Glaciers are active tidewater glaciers, which means that they often calve, and the best chance to experience this calving is on a boat tour, where you can get close to the glacier.

9. Take Advantage of Excellent Photo Opportunities

With stunning scenery and an abundance of wildlife, Tracy Arm Fjord is a photographer’s dream.

Be sure to bring your camera and take advantage of the many photo opportunities.

From the towering glaciers and mountain peaks to the forested canyons and stunning waterfalls, and of course, the incredible wildlife, there is no shortage of beautiful scenes to capture with your camera.

10. Count the Shades of Blue in the Glaciers

The Sawyer Glaciers are renowned for their incredible shades of blue. Unlike regular ice, glacial ice is very compact with few air bubbles, so it absorbs all the colors of the spectrum except blue, which it reflects to create the brilliant shades you see.

The Sawyer Glaciers are an excellent example, with a range of blue shades from turquoise and teal to deep sapphire and cobalt.

Because the shades of blue result from light reflecting off the ice, the colors of the glaciers change depending on the time of day and the weather.

Cloudy days are much better to see the blues of the glaciers, as the colors get washed out in bright sunlight.

While cloudy and gray days are usually considered poor weather, these are actually the best days to see the brilliant colors and scenery of Tracy Arm Fjord.

Princess Cruises

majestic princess in glacier bay alaska

A top choice for multi-generational families and larger groups seeking on-board experiences for a wide age range, Princess will sail seven ships to Alaska in 2024 — more than any other line. Princess also offers the most departure cities , potentially saving you money on airfare. Alaska sailings range from 4 to 22 days, though a week is the sweet spot. The line is also only one of seven permitted to enter the magnificent Glacier Bay National Park (shown); check out the tips at the end of the story for details.

Good Housekeeping Contributing Travel Editor Karen Cicero and her daughter recently sailed on Majestic Princess, a Family Travel Awards Winner , and raved about the ship's amenities, especially the Hollywood Pool Club. She described it as “an indoor space with a heated pool, plush loungers, and cabana-like spots that are free for all guests to use.” Cicero was also impressed with the entertainment and activities suitable for all ages, the excellent dining options and a supervised kids’ club for ages 3 to 12. "We saw grandparents and grandkids on the dance floor, at the shows, on the excursions — bonding moments were everywhere," Cicero said.

In 2024, Majestic Princess and Discovery Princess, the line's newest Alaska ship, will both sail roundtrip from Seattle. "You can't beat Princess if you're looking for an experience that will please all ages," said Cicero.

Departure Cities: Los Angeles; San Francisco; Seattle; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Crown Princess (2024 only); Grand Princess, Caribbean Princess (2025 only), Royal Princess, Sapphire Princess, Discovery Princess, Majestic Princess (2024 only), Crown Princess, Coral Princess (2025 only)

Norwegian Cruise Line

norwegian cruise line encore in alaska

Passengers are loyal to Norwegian for its beautiful ships, top-notch service and innovative amenities. The cruise line pioneered the concept of “freestyle cruising," which includes a flexible dining time. Flexible cruising continues to be a major selling point , according to our testers who recently sailed roundtrip from Seattle to Alaska on the Norwegian Encore (pictured). "We enjoyed not having to rush back to the ship after an excursion because we had a dinner reservation," said our tester who sailed with her spouse.

They also frequented the Encore’s Observation Lounge, where they were able to cozy up and spend hours searching for marine life from floor-to-ceiling windows. Activities and entertainment, like go-karting, slides and laser tag, are abundant. For a premium experience, consider booking a stateroom in The Haven. The Encore's most luxurious accommodations feature spacious rooms — the bathrooms are nearly double the size of those in standard staterooms — a private sundeck and a concierge.

The variety of sailings to Alaska is also another reason to choose Norwegian. "If Hawaii is also on your bucket list, Norwegian is one of the only cruise lines to offer a 16-day cruise departing from Honolulu that sails through both Hawaii and Alaska so you explore two dreamy destinations on one vacation," said Cicero. She added that Norwegian sails to Alaska until late October — about a month longer than most cruise lines.

Departure Cities: Honolulu; Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska (2025) Cruise Ships: Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Jewel (only in 2024), Norwegian Spirit (only in May 2024), Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Jade (only in 2025), Norwegian Joy (only in 2025)

Disney Cruise Line

disney cruise ship docked in ketchikan, alaska

Disney lovers will have the time of their lives sailing roundtrip from Vancouver to Alaska aboard the Disney Wonder. "It was the best experience ever," said a mom of two young adults who sailed on the ship in May 2023. "We felt like it was a great combination of Disney and Alaska."

On-board experiences brilliantly align with the destination. For instance, Disney characters are dressed in special outfits for Alaska and are on deck during the days at sea. "We were able to get incredible photos with the glaciers behind the characters," said the mom, who also noted that you can order Mickey Mouse ice cream bars from room service. Cicero added, "Disney has the best kids' and teen clubs of any cruise line. They're enormous, filled with epic activities like superhero training and are a great place for kids and teens to make friends."

If you want an equal dose of Disney and Alaska, this is the cruise for your crew. Sailings range from five to nine nights. All routes head to Stikine Icecap so guests can observe stunning glaciers, cliffs, waterfalls and wildlife.

Departure City: Vancouver Cruise Ship: Disney Wonder

Royal Caribbean International

juneau, alaska, usa

Royal Caribbean doesn’t only sail to the Caribbean. This global cruise line whisks passengers to Alaska from popular ports such as Seattle and Vancouver. You can choose a classic seven-night itinerary or a 13-night land-and-sea getaway.

Cruise enthusiasts at the Good Housekeeping Institute are fans of Royal Caribbean for its state-of-the-art ships, exceptional service and high-quality entertainment. "Royal Caribbean had the first rock-climbing wall and ice-skating rink on a cruise ship," said Cicero. "Since then, they've brought so many other epic activities to sea." For instance, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class, which includes Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas, offers skydiving, a surf simulator and a robot bar. "This line is an especially good fit for families with tweens, teens and young adults ," said Cicero, who sailed on Royal Caribbean with her teen daughter.

Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas (only in 2024), Ovation of the Seas (only in 2024), Serenade of the Seas (only in 2025)

National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions

lindblad expeditions ship national geographic sea lion

For an incredible small-ship experience, look no further than the Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic team-up. The largest of its ships that sail to Alaska can accommodate no more than 138 passengers — just a sliver of the 4,900 or so that Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas can hold. " Being on a smaller vessel means that you’ll be able to sail right up to less frequented glaciers, waterfalls and fjords, " said Cicero.

Of course, an intimate experience comes at a higher price tag — its eight-day Alaskan adventure starts at about $6,200 per person, though you won't need to pay extra for excursions. "Voyages tend to be themed and stress the educational component," said Cicero. For instance, one focuses on coastal wildlife while another explores native cultures. A Good Housekeeping staff member who sailed the line to the Galápagos Islands (a providence of Ecuador) raved, "The ship was beautiful! I was super impressed with the staff and the service felt above and beyond.”

Departure Cities: Juneau, Alaska; Ketchikan, Alaska; Seattle; Sitka, Alaska Cruise Ships: National Geographic Quest, National Geographic Venture, National Geographic Sea Bird, National Geographic Sea Lion, National Geographic Resolution

Holland America Line

holland america line cruise to alaska

Holland America has a well-earned reputation for bringing guests to new destinations for more than 150 years. Its ships tend to be mid-sized — larger than Lindblad's offerings but smaller than the Quantum ships from Royal Caribbean. While Holland attracts an older demographic, its Alaskan cruises are often filled with multi-generational families.

One of the cruise line’s most popular itineraries is the Seven-Day Inside Passage, which takes you through Glacier Bay National Park, the Inside Passage, Tracy Arm Inlet and several must-visit port towns. But for adventure seekers curious to see as much of Alaska as possible, you’ll find tons of extended itineraries including a robust 28-day voyage that crosses the Arctic Circle.

Holland America is the only cruise line permitted to serve glacier ice, using it for cocktails like the Blue Iceberg and Juneau Gin & Tonic. The line also launched a new Alaskan-themed brunch menu offered once per cruise.

Departure Cities: Anchorage, Alaska (for land-sea tours only); Fairbanks, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam

Celebrity Cruises

topshot france transport sea tourism

Celebrity is popular with adults and couples looking for a premium onboard experience, including delicious cuisine, luxurious staterooms and a high-end spa . We can’t imagine a better way to rest and relax after spending a day exploring the Alaskan wilderness. Our travel experts suggest choosing one of Celebrity's many Alaska itineraries that sail through the Inside Passage and up to Dawes Glacier or Hubbard Glacier, two of the state’s gems.

Of the three Celebrity ships that sail to Alaska, we recommend the Celebrity Edge for those new to cruising or seeking a more contemporary experience. Launched in 2018, the ship features standout innovations like Eden, a multi-level bar with panoramic views, and the Magic Carpet, a multi-purpose floating space suspended directly above the sea.

Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Edge

Tips for booking your cruise to Alaska

line break

✔️ Check your itinerary. The itinerary you choose is key on an Alaskan cruise. If you have your heart set on visiting Glacier Bay National Park, make sure that your cruise line has it listed on the schedule. "Only seven lines were awarded the Glacier Bay contract by the National Park Service ," Cicero said. If you're not sure whether the cruise you have in mind will go through Glacier Bay, double-check with the cruise line or your travel agent.

✔️ Book shore excursions well in advance. Alaskan cruises generally sail from April to October. Because of the shorter season, your ship will likely be close to capacity and several ships may overlap in ports. Excursions will book up quickly. To secure your spot, book excursions well in advance or as soon as they're available.

✔️ Focus on family. Alaskan cruises are best for kids who are at least 5 years old. "Keep in mind that cruise lines don't allow kids who aren't potty-trained to be in pools, even if they're wearing a swim diaper," Cicero said. It's also worth noting that most cruise lines don't permit babies under 6 months or pregnant passengers who are 24 or more weeks along. Cicero advises families with school-age children to look for on-ship amenities, such as an indoor heated pool, a supervised kids' club and a variety of family-friendly nighttime entertainment. "Before you sail, you should also find out which non-alcoholic beverages are complimentary," Cicero said. "Many cruise lines charge extra for soft drinks, but milk and juice are usually included." Free room service is another big perk for families, she notes, so see if that's offered on the line you're considering.

✔️ Check your passport. Even if your cruise starts and stops in a U.S. port like Seattle, there's a high chance your ship will dock in Canada at some point throughout your trip. Also, " some of the excursions in Alaskan ports venture into Canada and will require a passport," explained Cicero. For instance, you may take the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway from Skagway into Yukon, a Canadian territory. Your passport will need to be valid for at least 6 months following the cruise.

✔️ Pack layers. This is especially crucial if you're traveling in Alaska's shoulder season — May and September. While May tends to be drier, temperatures remain relatively chilly. Likewise, September marks the end of the summer season and welcomes cooler temperatures and more rainfall. Because you'll be spending a lot of time outdoors, it's important to prepare for all weather scenarios, including windy conditions common to sailing cruise ships.

✔️ Book next summer's cruise soon. To get the best staterooms and excursions, start looking for a 2025 cruise in 2024, Cicero said, noting that many ships start to fill up at least 6 months in advance. And don't forget about major sale days. "Last year, cruise lines had fantastic Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals," she said.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
