Alaska Cruises and Trains

Alaska cruise and railroad tours.

The Alaska Railroad tracks run north from Seward, stretching 470 miles through Anchorage, Talkeetna, and Denali National Park to the town of Fairbanks. The two primary cruise ports in the region are in Whittier and Seward. You can easily take the train to or from your cruise ship in both communities.

If you are travelling on a northbound cruise, you can catch the train to Anchorage in the evening from either Seward or Whittier. Both train departures are great for those wanting to catch a day cruise to see the glaciers and wildlife out of either port after disembarking their cruise ship. To continue north from Anchorage by rail you will need to overnight and catch another train the following morning. The northbound Denali Star train leaves Anchorage at 8:20am heading north to Talkeetna and Denali National Park. The train arrives into Talkeetna at 11:05am, and Denali National Park at 3:40pm. The same train continues on to Fairbanks departing Denali National Park at 4:00pm, and arriving into Fairbanks at 8:00pm.

If you prefer to disembark the cruise ship and go directly north to either Talkeetna or Denali National Park, you can book a seat on the Park Connection Motor Coach . This is the only scheduled service available that will allow you to travel from the port to either of the above locations in one day.

If you are cruising southbound and want to tour by train before your Alaska cruise, you will want to fly into either Anchorage or Fairbanks. Anchorage has the largest airport in Alaska, and most travelers choose that option. From Anchorage you can take the train directly to your cruise ship port city, either Seward or Whittier. You can also do a short land tour north to Denali National Park and or Talkeetna.  If you are short on time, consider returning to Whittier or Seward on the motorcoach . This is the only scheduled service that will allow you to travel to your cruise port from either Denali Park or Talkeetna in the same day.

Remember, we are happy to help with your trip, not only the train services and motorcoach transfers, but we can arrange complete pre and post cruise land packages as well.

Alaska Cruise With Train Ride: A Full Guide

Alaska Cruise With Train

Combining an Alaska cruise with a train journey gives you two distinct travel experiences in one amazing trip.

An Alaska cruise is a trip unlike any other. You'll explore the Inside Passage and all it has to offer. Expect to witness epic wildlife, snow-capped peaks and calving glaciers within a single trip. Combine this with a scenic train ride and you've got the recipe for a perfect getaway .

Although it may sound surprising, there are actually plenty of options to combine your Alaska cruise with a train trip. You can choose from long train journeys to short day trips depending on what suits you most. No matter which train or cruise you choose, one thing is guaranteed - amazing scenery and breathtaking views.

To help you decide on your perfect Alaska cruise and train trip, we've listed our favourite four options below.

White Pass & Yukon Route

Alaska Cruise With Train - yukon

The White Pass & Yukon train trip is one of the most popular day excursions available to cruise passengers in Alaska. Almost all cruise lines offer the excursion, but it can also be booked separately should you wish.

Built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, the railroad made the area far more accessible and even more popular for gold miners hoping to strike lucky. The three foot wide track is an engineering marvel and ascends to almost 3,000 feet within the first 20 miles of the journey.

A vintage diesel locomotive pulls fully restored carriages as you witness incredible views over mountains, glaciers, waterfalls and lush forest. The 40 mile round-trip is the perfect day trip to get away from the ships and witness breathtaking views.

The trip takes just under 3 hours and costs around $130 per person. Your cruise line will provide a transfer to the station if you book through them.

The Rocky Mountaineer

Alaska Cruise With Train - Mountaineer

Stretching all the way from Northern Canada to New Mexico, the Canadian Rocky Mountains is an incredibly diverse, beautiful and ever-changing landscape. This makes it ideal for train journeys!

The Rocky Mountaineer train is known for it's top-quality service, amazing food, and glass-domed carriages. It's no wonder that National Geographic named the Rocky Mountaineer one of the " World’s Greatest Trips ".

For cruise passengers, the train journey begins in Banf where you stay the night to explore this lovely area. In the morning you board you train and travel to Kamloops where you stay overnight in a hotel. The following day you journey to Vancouver where your Alaska cruise ship awaits. Alternatively, you can do the trip in reverse and take the train when you disembark your cruise in Vancouver.

You an choose from either Silverleaf or Goldleaf class. If you travel in goldleaf class you can expect champagne, caviar and smoked salmon as you journey through amazing sceneries. Both classes are excellent though.

Because this is a long journey, you should expect to pay an extra $1,500 on top of your cruise price minimum.

Anchorage To Seward Train

Alaska Cruise With Train - Anchorage

This is the perfect option if you're cruise is departing of finishing in Seward. Many one way cruises go between Vancouver and Seward and flying in or out of Anchorage is usually the best option (and the cheapest).

Although there is a bus route between Anchorage and Seward that is slightly cheaper and quicker, the Grandview Train of the Alaska Railroad is by far the more scenic option as it follows the coastal route which passes mountains, glaciers, waterfalls and much more. It's also the more relaxing option as traffic during the bus journey can get fairly hectic.

The 4.5-hour train ride departs from just outside Anchorage Airport and arrives at the docks for an easy transfer in Seward port . In fact, the Grandview Train schedule is aligned to the cruise ship schedules which is super useful.

The Empire Builder

Alaska Cruise With Train - Empire

Amtrak's legendary long-distance passenger train -  Empire Builder - has been going for decades and offers passengers plenty of options when it comes to boarding stations.

The route takes in the rugged splendor of the American West from Chicago to the Pacific Northwest. See the mighty Mississippi, North Dakota plains, and Glacier National Park as you wend your way along this lovely route.

From Chicago the major stops occur at Minneapolis, Spokane, and Seattle. This is ideal for Alaska cruise passenger as many of the major cruise lines offer round-trips from Seattle . Therefore. you can either take the Empire Builder before or after you cruise.

This is a fantastic option for people who want to see as much of the country as possible in one trip.

Excellent trip. Well planned out. We were able to get all our additional destinations accommodated.

Just a note to tell you how much we enjoyed our unexpected trip. Thank you for organising this so quickly for us to fill in the extra 5 days after the cruise was terminated.Everything went so smoothly, and we were on everyone's' 'list' on all the transfers. The best part was the small plane flight back from Denali- it was brilliant. The cruises on the Fiords were also a highlight. So, thanks again. We are thinking of coming back to view the Northern Lights at Fairbanks and also the start of the Iditarod.

Skagway's White Pass Railway cruise excursions in Alaska: All you need to know

Ashley Kosciolek

Even if trains, history and nature aren't your cups of tea on their own, something absurdly special happens when the three combine for an Alaska cruise and train experience.

The White Pass and Yukon Route Railway is a staple of any visit to Skagway, Alaska, particularly if you arrive by ship during an Alaska cruise . The town's success is closely linked to the development of the railroad infrastructure, with the train line carrying both passengers and cargo between Alaska and Canada for more than 120 years.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

I've ridden the train's Skagway-to-White Pass Summit route, and the experience was fascinating and exhilarating, offering a narrated history lesson and views that are absolutely unrivaled by any other train journey I've experienced.

From how it started to where the route will take you and how much you'll pay for tickets, here's what you can expect from a ride on the White Pass Railway, Skagway's most scenic route to Canada.

White Pass and Yukon Route history

train trips in alaska with cruise

Construction on the White Pass train, Skagway's easiest way in and out during the gold rush days of the early 1900s, began in 1898, with investors from the U.S., Canada and England — and more than 35,000 workers — coming together to complete the $10 million project in just two years.

Until the tracks were laid, the two main routes over the mountain were the shorter but steeper Chilkoot Trail and the longer but flatter White Pass, both of which presented rough terrain and brutal conditions for anyone who made the trek.

Each person who ventured out in search of gold via one of the two paths was required to carry 1 ton of supplies to see them through their trip, making the hike even more treacherous. After the railroad's completion, the expedition was far less arduous, and it took much less time for stampeders to reach the Klondike region.

From 1982 to 1988 — after more than 80 continuous years in operation, including during the winter months — the railroad halted services when the cost of metal dropped and mines, which produced most of the train's cargo, closed.

In 1988, the route reopened as a tourist attraction and now operates from early May through late September to align with the Alaska cruise season. In 1994, the White Pass and Yukon Route was designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, among the likes of the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty.

White Pass train price

train trips in alaska with cruise

Like the mountain over which the locomotives run, the cost to ride the train along the White Pass Summit route is steep. Tickets purchased online at least 24 hours in advance are $142 per adult and $71 per child for the 2.5- to 3-hour trip, which takes passengers 20 miles from Skagway to an elevation of 3,000 feet before turning around at the Canadian border and heading back.

The White Pass and Yukon Route Railway also sells tickets to non-cruise passengers for options like one-way train rides and camping, as well as connections via Carcross and Bennett, which venture out of Alaska and into British Columbia before entering the Yukon Territory.

If you do the Skagway train tour from your cruise ship, you're almost guaranteed to pay more. I bought my White Pass Summit adult ticket through Norwegian Cruise Line as a shore excursion, and it set me back $219 — a significant but not unexpected markup of $77. (On some sailings, the excursion starts at only $199 per adult and $99 per child.)

Longer and more expensive variations of the train trip, when booked as cruise shore excursions , include visits to local sights before or after the train ride, as well as hybrid train and motorcoach rides that venture as far north as Carcross in Canada's Yukon Territory.

Prices vary by cruise line and specific tour inclusions.

How to purchase tickets for the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway

train trips in alaska with cruise

In addition to purchasing tickets yourself online on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway website or through your cruise line's app, website or shore excursion desk, you can buy day-of tickets at the ticket office on Second Avenue in Skagway. There, you'll also find The Train Shoppe, which sells all sorts of memorabilia and apparel.

Whether you purchase your tickets online or in person, through your cruise line or directly from White Pass and Yukon Route, you can choose from several departure times. Select one that fits your schedule. If you book independently (not through your cruise line), double-check that the time you pick coincides with the time your ship will be in port.

Where does Skagway's White Pass train go?

train trips in alaska with cruise

The train ride for visitors to Skagway starts at the train tracks about halfway between the cruise ship docks and the downtown area.

From there, the train will travel, without stopping, to one of several points: White Pass Summit at the U.S. border with Canada, where the train will turn around and travel back down the mountain to Skagway (most excursions); Fraser, British Columbia, where passengers can transfer to motorcoaches that travel the Klondike Highway (also an outpost for Canadian customs); and Carcross in Canada's Yukon Territory, where passengers can explore the historic town, including a gold rush general store.

Along the way, riders can follow along with provided maps to track their route past several points of interest, including the rail line's maintenance shops, a donated caboose now rented as an Airbnb, gravesites, waterfalls, steel bridges, two tunnels and lookout points that make for fantastic photo opportunities.

What it's like to ride the White Pass and Yukon Route train

train trips in alaska with cruise

When you book (or receive your ticket, in the case of a cruise line booking), you will be given a meeting place and instructed to be there at a set time. If you're coming from a cruise ship and plan to spend time in town prior to your ride, take note of your meeting place well ahead of time to be sure you know how to get there. My travel companion and I took a wrong turn on our way to the meeting spot and would have missed our excursion had it not been for a kind rail worker who saw us running with our tickets and gave us a ride.

Apart from the railroad's six brand-new engines, its fleet is impressively vintage, consisting of two steam engines from the first half of the 20th century, 20 diesel-electric locomotives dating from the 1950s and 92 restored and replica passenger coaches, including one that's more than 140 years old. As such, there is no air conditioning in the coaches, so passengers can expect things to feel a bit stuffy if it's a hot day. On my journey, it was chilly, making it a pleasant ride.

Although travelers are prohibited from moving between coaches while the train is in motion, they are permitted to stand on the exterior terraces on either side of each car for fresh air and views that are unimpeded by the coaches' glass windows. Be warned that visibility can be poor and the vibe creepy when the weather is foggy, as it was the first time I rode the train back in 2013. Ten years later, I caught a break and happened to visit on a clear, sunny day when I enjoyed phenomenal views.

Guides and eventually the conductor will come through to say hello, check tickets and sell souvenirs, such as DVDs, hats and photo books. They can also answer any questions you have. Guides narrate during the trip, providing valuable tidbits of information about each point of interest the train passes on the mountain. If you enjoy the experience, it's appropriate to tip a few dollars to your car's guide or to tip a larger amount to the conductor, who will divide it among all the staff.

Each passenger is provided with a free booklet about the train route's history. It includes safety rules, a map with a blurb about each point of interest, information about the fleet, a preview of items available to purchase at The Train Shoppe in town and a couple of puzzles to pass the time. (Some passengers report being bored during their rides. If you're worried, bring a pen for the puzzles.)

Bottom line

While I don't recommend a ride if you're someone who can't sit still for long periods of time or if you're afraid of heights, I do think it's one of the best activities a visitor to Alaska can do .

If you're looking for a memorable way to grasp the history and sheer vastness that is the Alaskan wilderness, a ride on the White Pass and Yukon Route train is something you don't want to miss.

What’s Included

Frequently asked questions, can i customize this trip.

Your trip can be as rich as you’d like, and completely arranged around your interests and needs. The greatest benefit of working with us is our local knowledge. You can customize your trip and decide what you’d like to see and do.

If your trip is a special occasion, we’ll make sure it is unforgettable. Or if you’re traveling with a group, we’ll take care of the logistics so you can share time together stress-free.

Can I modify the trip's length by spending more or less time at certain locations?

Absolutely! We personalize all our clients’ trips to fit their exact tastes and needs. You can add days at locations that you’d like to explore and spend more time at. Or leave out certain areas that don’t interest you as much. Discuss your travel goals with our Vacation Advisors who make sure that your trip fits your needs and budget.

Where do I stay on my trip?

We partner with many hotels across the country that offer a variety of service levels and unique experiences. Choosing a hotel is based on local availability and personal preference, and our Insiders will help you find the perfect place to rest your head so that you can have the best experience possible.

On some trips, I see hotels referred to as Comfort, Superior, and Deluxe. What is that?

On some of our trips, you’ll see that we categorize our hotel rooms by Comfort, Superior and Deluxe class, which generally translates into the traditional 3-, 4- or 5-star designation (equivalent to Best Western, Sheraton and Fairmont). However, sometimes we use the same hotel for more than one category and distinguish the room by size, floor level or view.

Our Comfort Level hotels include our favorite 3 star hotels, in great locations and with excellent service.

Our Superior Level hotels provide amazing value for clients wanting something more upscale but not at the price of a top-end 5 star resort. Superior level hotels are some of our favorites because of the character and unique charm that you won't find at the average chain hotel.

In Deluxe Level hotels, it's likely you'll be staying at one of the iconic Canadian Fairmont Hotels in a room with a view. Built for the Canadian Pacific Railway in the early 20th century, these hotels are luxurious and full of history – ensuring an experience you'll never forget.

How much does my trip cost?

All our trips are personalized to fit our clients’ schedule and budget. The price of your trip generally depends on the travel season, train service, accommodations, and the sightseeing tours you take. When you request a quote you’ll be provided with the detailed information you need

What is the Rocky Mountaineer experience like?

Rocky Mountaineer operates daylight touring trains, which travel along three of the most spectacular routes in Western Canada. You’ll enjoy onboard commentary, award winning service, and incredible food.

What are the differences between SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf service on the Rocky Mountaineer train?

There are a few differences between SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf service.

In SilverLeaf, you travel in a single-level dome car with oversized windows and are served meals at your seat. In GoldLeaf, you travel in a bi-level dome car, which features comfortable seating on the upper level and a dining area on the lower level. GoldLeaf coaches are taller, so you can see above the treeline.

GoldLeaf also includes access to an exclusive outdoor viewing platform. In SilverLeaf, there is a small viewing area between train cars.

What is the small ship cruise experience like?

Small ship cruises are much more flexible than a typical large ship cruise - your onboard team will decide on the best adventures of the day based on weather, wildlife sightings, and the interests of the group. The agile vessels are able to access secluded inlets, bays, and channels where your chances of seeing wildlife are so much better.

What are the accommodations like on a small ship cruise?

Accommodations range from comfortable private cabins with ensuite bathrooms and picture windows, to full suites. These well appointed ships feature delicious cuisine, common lounges for mingling and evening presentations, as well as kayak launch docks for the days of adventure ahead.

What clothing should I pack for the Essential Rockies with Alaska Cruise trip?

We recommend bringing a range of layers for this trip. Summers are mild in Southeast Alaska (average temperatures: 55-56 degrees F / 12-18 degrees C) and slightly warmer in the Canadian Rockies (average temperatures: 68-77 degrees F / 20-25 degrees C). It can be cooler close to the water or up in the mountains, so a fleece pullover and rain jacket are must-haves. Packing a pair of waterproof boots and some comfortable walking shoes is highly recommended.

What meals are included on Rocky Mountaineer and the cruise, and can dietary restrictions be accommodated?

When travelling on Rocky Mountaineer, you enjoy breakfast and lunch onboard the train. The seasonal menu varies by rail route and day. The cuisine is inspired by the areas the train passes through. Complimentary snacks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are served each day.

All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and snacks are included on your small ship cruise. The onboard chefs create fresh, sustainable meals from locally sourced ingredients.

Dietary requirements, food allergies and other preferences can be accommodated with advance notice. Please let your Vacation Advisor know of any dietary needs at the time of booking.

Day 0: Arrive in Anchorage (late)

Day 1: Full day in Anchorage

Pick up rental car , Earthquake Park, Tony Knowles Coastal Trail . Possibly Trolly Tour or Anchorage museum if we have the time and energy after a late flight .

Day 2: Drive to Glacier View (2.5 hours)

Matanuska Glacier tour at 3pm through Glacier Tours. On the way, do 1 hike: Thunderbird Falls, South Fork/Barbara Falls, Albert Falls at Eagle River Nature Center, Reflections Lake or Boddenburg Butte. Too many to choose from, so we’ll probably let my daughter choose the night before based on how far we want to go and how early we want to get out of the hotel. Stop at Eklutna Historical Park. Time permitting, stop at Mat Rec Site and do the short Edge Nature Trail walk. (Intentionally skipping Reindeer Farm and Musk Ox farm in lieu of more hiking adventures.) Staying at Alpenglow Luxury Camping.

Day 4: Drive to Denali , with a stop in Willow for Dog Sledding

QUESTION: How much time should we allow to get from Alpenglow Luxury Camping where we are staying to Snowhook Adventures in Willow? Google Maps says 2 hours, but I know not to trust that!

After dog sledding, fingers crossed for a clear day. If clear, hike Moose Flats Loop Trail. If not a clear day, open to other suggestions for a hike or activity. Possibly Talkeetna to the Riverfront Park. Or may just head straight to the Denali Visitor Center to get the Jr. Ranger back pack and booklet and do an entrance hike. Staying at Aurora Denali.

Day 4: East Fork Transit Bus into Denali

7:30am bus ticket. Will definitely get off to hike at some point, likely along the river bed, but will talk to the rangers and bus drivers for other ideas. We are prepared hikers, but getting lost makes me nervous, and not up for big elevation gains.

Day 5: 2nd full day in Denali

Hike Savage River Loop, maybe an additional hikes around the visitor center. Sled dogs.

Day 6: Drive back to Anchorage (5 hrs)

Choose to do this long drive in one shot so that we would have more time for stops the following day. Do one of the hikes we didn’t do on the way up to Denali. Stop at Iditarod Headquarters.

Day 7: Drive Anchorage to Seward (3 hrs)

Hike Virgin Creek falls or the waterfall at McHugh Recreation Site. Gold Panning at Indian Valley Mine or Crow Creek Mine. Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center . Would love to fit in Tonsina Creek Trail this day, but that is probably overly ambitious. Once in Seward, planning to stop at the visitor center to pick up a Jr. Ranger book and drop off our laundry at Suds N Swirl to pickup before we get on our cruise a couple days later. Possibly also dropping off the rental car (TBD). Staying at Northern Nights B&B.

QUESTION: Beluga Point – What are the chances of seeing Belugas if we are there at low tide? I think it’s pretty low likelihood, so probably would make this a quick stop.

QUESTION: For Gold Panning, is India Valley Mine or Crow Creek Mine better? Any reason to choose one over the other?

Day 8: Kenai Fjords Cruise with Major Marine

Doing the 11:30 cruise , so we will likely just walk around Seward/along the waterfront in the morning.

Day 9: Exit Glacier & Board Cruise

If we’ve kept our car , will drive; if not, will take a shuttle/taxi. Hike Glacier Overlook Trail (possibly ranger-led if we time it right). Explore the nature center and get Jr. Ranger badge. Head back to our hotel to pick up bags and head to the cruise terminal. Plan to arrive by 4pm for an 8pm departure.

QUESTION: If we’ve decided not to keep our car , is it feasible to get to the cruise terminal with all our bags on the free shuttle? Or is cab a better option? Not sure how cruise crowds affect either of these options.

Once on the cruise , we have the below plans (all excursions booked)

- Juneau : Mendenhall Glacier Rafting. Maybe do the tram afterwards if it’s a nice day (not planning to purchase anything ahead of time)

- Skagway: Grizzly Falls Zip Lines. Visitor Center to get Jr. Ranger Badge.

- Icy Straight Point: Nothing booked, but depending on weather and what we feel like doing, either walk along the beach, take the Gondola then hike. If we have not seen whales by this point in our trip, we may consider doing whale watching. QUESTION: Are there options to book whale watching (through a reputable company) last minute? Any recommendations on who is good vs. who we should stay away from? We know we would pay more by not booking ahead….just hoping we’ll see enough whales without booking separate whale watching.

- Ketchikan: Traitor’s Cove with Island Wins, booked

After the cruise , we are going to stay an extra night in Vancouver, and likely go to Stanley Park, Granville Island and maybe Queen Elizabeth Park.

And if you made it all the way to my VERY long post, extra extra extra thank you. :-)

Alaska Cruise Tips: When to Go, What to Pack, How to Choose, and More

  • I’m a seasoned traveler who firmly believes the best way to experience Alaska’s incredible scenery is on an Alaska cruise.
  • Think of an Alaska cruise like a floating hotel that carries you to a breathtaking new destination each day.
  • Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or have lots of shipboard experience, these tips will help you make most of your Alaska cruise vacation.

I’ve cruised all over the world, and I can honestly say there’s no other cruise experience that quite compares to an Alaska cruise. Seeing the untouched landscapes, glacier-dotted shorelines, and penguins and bears at play really puts life into perspective—and makes for a truly unforgettable travel experience no matter your age.

Many people choose to make an Alaska cruise their first foray into cruising . First timers are attracted to the state’s majestic beauty, but not necessarily savvy to the bounty that a cruise ship offers. If you’re considering a cruise to America’s Last Frontier, here’s how to make the most of it.

EVERYTHING’S INCLUDED: 7 Best All-Inclusive Cruise Lines in the World

1. You can Save Money by Cruising to Alaska in May, June, and September

The Alaska cruise season is brief. Alaska cruises start each year in May and run through early October. The most popular (and expensive) months to cruise are July and August, coinciding with summer family vacations and translating into ships that are often filled with kids.

If you aren’t tethered to a school-year schedule ( or don’t mind taking your kids out of school ), you may want to consider a shoulder season cruise to Alaska. This translates to sailings in late May, June, or September. On these shoulder season cruises, you’re likely to find lower prices and less crowded cruise ships.

2. Pack for All Four Seasons (and Don’t Forget Binoculars)

Alaska’s climate is notoriously unpredictable. I advise packing warm clothes that are easy to layer on and peel off. Bringing gloves, hats, and a scarf is not unreasonable. On the flip side, Alaska is quite far north, and long summer days offer midnight sun and potentially warm temperatures. Many ships have swimming pools and hot tubs, so don’t forget bathing suits and sunscreen .

A comfortable pair of walking shoes are a must if you want to keep your feet feeling good as you explore each port of call. Binoculars can help you spot a range of animals in their natural habitat. Make sure each person in your group has their own pair so they can spot Alaska’s Big Five land mammals (Black and brown bears, moose, wolves, caribou, and Dall sheep) as well as orcas, puffins, and bald eagles.

3. Shore Excursions Are a Must

As wonderful as shipboard life is, to really experience Alaska you need to disembark at each port of call. Getting off the ship is a great way to get in touch with native Alaskan culture that’s reflected in towering totem poles, hand-woven decorative fabrics, and other native crafts. Alaska cruises offer dozens of shore excursions from whale-watching to dogsledding, many curated with kids and families in mind.

4. How to Choose between The Inside Passage or the Gulf of Alaska

The sheltered waterway known as the Inside Passage is a very popular cruise route. As your ship weaves through a patchwork of islands, with fjords and glaciers thrown in for good measure, you’ll witness wildlife and scenery that looks lifted from a postcard. Alaska cruises taking this route usually make a round-trip journey from either Seattle or Vancouver, cities that have major airports with numerous flight options.

WHERE TO GO: 25 Best Family Vacation Spots in the U.S. for All Ages

The other popular cruise itinerary is the Gulf of Alaska, a stretch of the Pacific Ocean that hugs the southern coast. This equally scenic itinerary is usually a one-way sailing, departing from Seattle or Vancouver and terminating in either Whittier or Seward, Alaska (or vice versa). If you want to add on post- or pre-cruise destinations such as Anchorage and Denali National Park, starting or ending your cruise in Alaska makes it easy to do so.

Keep in mind you will arrive and depart from different cities, requiring the purchase of a multi-city airline ticket (unless you live driving distance from Seattle or Vancouver), which can be quite costly.

5. Utilize the Onboard Naturalist

Booking an Alaska cruise cruise that has an onboard naturalist is a no-brainer. On my recent Princess cruise to Alaska, our Canadian naturalist went above and beyond his job’s description, spending each evening on deck 16 hanging out with passengers, helping us spot humpback whales and see the Northern Lights until well past midnight.

Small ship cruise lines such as  Lindblad Expeditions, which partners with National Geographic , offer families a deep dive into the natural world with the expertise of naturalists who cater to curious kids as they learn environmental stewardship.

If your ship takes you to Glacier Bay National Park, park rangers are usually brought on board as the ship cruises through the park, helping you to better understand the fragile beauty surrounding you.

6. Spring for an Exterior Stateroom

While interior cabins will save you money, Alaska’s eye-candy beauty and abundance of wildlife merit the added expense of an exterior stateroom (with a balcony if available). From the moment you wake up, you’ll be treated to spellbinding scenery at all hours.

7. Don’t Skip the Buffet

While many large and mid-size cruise ships promote their specialty restaurants, these dining options usually incur an extra fee, which can quickly add up when you’re booking a table for your entire family. The ship’s buffet is a low-stakes, no-additional-cost way for kids to sample global cuisine. If crowds are a deterrent, hit the buffet a bit early or late, when lines tend to be thinner.

MAKE MEMORIES: 50 Family Vacation Ideas for the Best Trip Ever

On my family’s recent Alaska cruise, we were thrilled with the smorgasbord of edible delights from across the world. We couldn’t get enough of the authentic Indian food, feasting on tandoori chicken and fragrant curries served with refreshing raitas and savory chutneys. The Chinese food section let us customize our stir-fry with veggies and proteins of our choice, including tofu, perfect for my vegetarian daughter.

8. Be Prepared for Some Seasickness

The Inside Passage is sheltered, equaling waters that are usually quite calm. However, if your itinerary crosses the Gulf of Alaska, the sea tends to be rougher. Whichever route your ship takes, being prepared with seasickness remedies is essential. I don’t suffer from sea sickness but my daughter uses Sea-Band acupressure wristbands with good results.

9. Take Advantage of Onboard Activities

Most large and mid-size cruise ships sailing Alaska itineraries have age-appropriate supervised clubs for kids and teens at no additional cost. These programs give young passengers the opportunity to spend time with their peers and try new activities, freeing parents to enjoy a bit of adult time.

BRING THE KIDS: 7 Great Cruise Lines for Families (and Their 12 Most Kid-Friendly Ships)

Cruise ships offer a range of ways for families to spend time together. Try a game of pickleball on all Holland America ships or enjoy a ride on the bumper cars at Royal Caribbean’s SeaPlex, the largest indoor activity complex at sea. Evening entertainment, including Broadway-style musical performances on Disney cruises, is always a highlight as well.

10. Discounts for Kids Are Real and Significant

Keep an eye out for periodic kids sail free deals where children ages 18 and under can sail for no charge beyond taxes, fees, and port expenses. These promotions make a family vacation more affordable. Holland America is one cruise line that offers these bargains frequently on Alaska cruises, while small ships such as Lindblad and UnCruise always offer a $500 discount for children.
