Is it âtravelingâ or âtravellingâ?
What to Know When it comes to spelling the forms of the verb travel , traveled and traveling are more common in the U.S., and travelled and travelling are dominant everywhere else.
Spelling is typically clear-cut in modern English: forty unfailingly betrays four ; the sweet treat after dinner is spelled dessert , not desert .
But some words have two forms that appear often enough in edited text to make it clear that something else is going on. And so it is with forms of the verb travel : traveled and travelled , and traveling and travelling .
It might have a different spelling wherever you're going.
One or Two L 's?
If you look at where the single l forms originate and where the double l forms originate a pattern emerges: in the United States, traveled and traveling predominate, and everywhere else travelled and travelling are preferred.
The reason mostly comes down to one man we at Merriam-Webster hold especially dear: Noah Webster. Our lexicographical father (brothers George and Charles Merriam bought the rights to Noah Websterâs 1841 dictionary after Webster died) was a great believer in spelling reform and wanted English spelling to make more senseâand if the English of his homeland had more logic to it than its British parent, so much the better. He decided that travel needed only one l in its past and present participle forms.
Websterâs logic is the reason behind the spelling of canceled and cancelled as well: in the U.S., they have just one l , but elsewhere two l âs are the norm.
American English Words that Use 2 L 's
Webster didnât think all double l âs needed to be reduced to one, however: in cases in which the accent, or emphasis, is on the syllable with the l , two l âs are preserved: expelled and expelling ; controlled and controlling ; patrolled and patrolling .

Key Takeaways
- Travel refers to going to a place, especially far away.
- Trip involves traveling from one place to another, usually for a short period of time.
- Journey implies traveling from one place to another without necessarily returning.
- Proper usage of these terms is essential in effectively conveying our experiences.
Definition and Differences between Travel, Trip, and Journey
Travel is a verb that means going to a place, especially far away, while trip refers to the process of traveling from one place to another, usually for a short time. Journey, on the other hand, implies traveling from one place to another without necessarily returning.
Travel as a verb meaning to go to a place, especially far away
Travel, as a verb, emphasizes the act of moving from one location to another. This movement often involves significant distance between the two points. For instance, you might say you are traveling to Europe or Asia from America – places that are undoubtedly quite far from each other.
Notably, travel doesn’t always require a return trip; it merely notes the action of going somewhere far . Even voyages into space can be considered travel! So next time you utter “I love to travel,” note that this phrase speaks volumes about your passion for exploring distant destinations and embracing new experiences on a broader geographic scale .
Trip as the process of traveling from one place to another, usually for a short time
When we talk about a trip, we’re referring to the act of traveling from one place to another. It’s usually for a short period of time and involves moving between different locations .
Think of it as going on a vacation or taking a quick getaway. A trip can be as short as a day or extend over several days, but it generally doesn’t involve staying in one place for an extended period.
So whether you’re heading out on a road trip with friends or catching a flight to explore new cities, remember that a trip is all about the process of getting from point A to point B , enjoying the journey along the way.
Journey as traveling from one place to another, not necessarily returning
A journey is all about the experience of traveling from one place to another, without the expectation of returning . It can be a long and exciting adventure, with multiple destinations along the way.
Unlike a trip or travel, which often involves going somewhere and then coming back, a journey implies forward movement and exploration . It’s like embarking on a voyage of discovery, where you’re eager to see what lies ahead and open to new experiences.
Whether it’s backpacking through Europe or sailing around the world, a journey offers endless possibilities for exploration and self-discovery .
Common Uses and Examples of Travel, Trip, and Journey
– Travel: “I love traveling to different countries , experiencing new cultures and exploring exotic destinations.
– Trip: “We took a weekend trip to the beach, enjoying sun-kissed days and relaxing by the seaside.”
– Journey: “His journey across the desert was filled with challenges and self-discovery as he embarked on a soul-searching adventure.”
Travel: “I love to travel to different countries.”
I absolutely adore exploring different countries . Experiencing new cultures, trying unique cuisines , and immersing myself in unfamiliar landscapes is what makes travel so thrilling for me.
Whether it’s wandering through ancient ruins in Greece or hiking through the vibrant jungles of Costa Rica, I find immense joy in venturing beyond my comfort zone and discovering all that the world has to offer.
Travel opens my eyes to different perspectives and allows me to create lasting memories that I cherish forever.
Trip: “We went on a business trip to New York.”
Last week, I had the opportunity to go on a business trip to New York . It was an exciting experience that allowed me to explore the bustling city and meet with important clients . During the trip, we visited various companies , attended conferences , and even had some time to enjoy the sights and sounds of New York.
Being able to immerse myself in a different environment for a short period of time was both refreshing and educational. Overall, it was a successful trip that helped us strengthen our professional relationships and achieve our business goals.
Journey: “His journey around the world took him three years.”
I embarked on a three-year journey around the world, exploring new cultures and experiencing incredible adventures along the way. From bustling cities to remote villages, my journey allowed me to immerse myself in different landscapes and meet fascinating people from all walks of life.
It was a transformative experience that broadened my horizons and shaped my perspective on the world.
Clarifying Misuses of Travel, Trip, and Journey
Many people mistakenly use the term “travel” for short distances, but it should be reserved for going to faraway places. To understand the proper usage of these words, read on!
Incorrect uses of travel: “He traveled to the grocery store.”
Using the word “travel” to describe a short trip to the grocery store is incorrect. Travel usually refers to going to a distant place, especially far away. So, it’s important to use this term appropriately and not for everyday local trips like grocery stores.
Proper uses of the terms: “I traveled to Europe.”
I traveled to Europe for my summer vacation. It was an exciting travel experience filled with new cultures, delicious food, and breathtaking sights. The proper use of the term “travel” in this context refers to going somewhere far away , especially to a different country or continent .
In this case, I embarked on an adventure from my home country to Europe, immersing myself in each destination’s rich history and vibrant atmosphere. Traveling to Europe broadened my horizons and created memories that will last a lifetime.
Understanding the Nuances between Travel, Trip, and Journey
Travel, trip, and journey may seem similar, but they each have their own nuances. Read on to delve deeper into the distinctions between these terms and how to use them correctly in your everyday conversations.
Travel focuses on the action of going to a distant place.
Travel allows us to embark on exciting journeys to faraway destinations. It is the act of physically moving from one place to another , often to distant locations . Whether it’s exploring a new country , immersing ourselves in different cultures , or experiencing thrilling adventures , travel is all about the exhilarating action of venturing beyond our comfort zones .
So pack your bags and get ready for an incredible journey filled with unforgettable experiences!
Trip emphasizes the process of traveling and staying in a place.
A trip is all about the journey itself and the experience of being in a specific place . It focuses on the process of traveling from one location to another, while also emphasizing the time spent staying in that particular place.
Whether you’re taking a short weekend trip to a nearby city or embarking on a week-long vacation, a trip is about immersing yourself in new surroundings and enjoying everything that destination has to offer.
Journey implies a longer and more significant travel experience.
When embarking on a journey, you can expect a more extensive and meaningful travel experience . Unlike a simple trip or travel, a journey often involves exploring multiple destinations or pursuing a specific purpose .
It encompasses the idea of venturing into the unknown and embracing new challenges along the way. Whether it’s an epic road trip across several countries or a spiritual pilgrimage to sacred sites, a journey offers an opportunity for personal growth and transformation .
It allows you to immerse yourself in different cultures , navigate unfamiliar terrain, and create lasting memories. So if you’re seeking an adventure that goes beyond mere transportation from point A to point B, set out on a journey that will take you further and leave an indelible mark on your soul.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations
By Claudia Looi 2 Comments
Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.
Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations â the metro stations of Moscow.
Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as âthe palaces for the people.â Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.
The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldnât keep up with her stories. I donât remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow. Â Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who canât read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.
The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:
1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.
2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

Kyle Richards Said These ‘Soft and Cozy’ Bestselling Leggings Are a Travel ‘Essential’

From all of the trips that have come with being on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills to the ones required of being on set as an actress, Kyle Richards knows how to dress for travel like a pro. With all of the trips she’s taken, we have to assume she’s put hundreds of clothing items to the test to find out which ones work best while on the road. So to know she’s called a pair of $23 leggings a travel “essential” — we know they’ve got to be good.
In an Amazon livestream showcasing her “Vacay Getaway Essentials,” the 55-year-old shared that the Fullsoft High Waisted Leggings were some of her favorites. She noted that she pairs them with a white hoodie for a cozy-but-cute airport outfit.
“These are essential to wear when traveling, these soft pants,” she said. “They’re leggings, but they don’t feel like workout leggings. They’re so soft and cozy.”
Get the Fullsoft 3-Pack High Waisted Leggings for just $23 at Amazon! Please note, prices are accurate at the date of publication, April 11, 2024, but are subject to change.

One of the features of the leggings she likes the most is their tummy-control waistline. “They have this high waist here,” she said. “That’s always good to have, a little band here that holds my stomach in, so I like that.” But we also have to assume she loves their non-see-through, four-way stretch fabric too, made of a polyester-spandex blend.
Richards is far from the only one who’s fallen into the hype of these leggings. On top of being an Amazon bestseller, over 20,000 shoppers have come back to the site to give the product a five-star rating, usually accompanied by a rave review. Not to mention, over 1,000 packs of these leggings have been bought just this last month.
Fullsoft 3-Pack High Waisted Leggings
Backing up Richards’ claim, this shopper said they wore these leggings “for two long haul flights and for walking all over Japan.”
“They are super comfortable and flattering, and the waistband lays flat to wear under dresses or tunics (which I did),” they said. “I am short and curvy, and the stretch and softness is just perfect. [They’re] easy to hand wash and line dry quickly.”

What to stream this week: Conan O'Brien travels, 'Migration' soars and Taylor Swift will reign
This combination of images show promotional art for upcoming shows "Under The Bridge," premiering April 17 on Hulu, "The Spiderwick Chronicles," premiering April 19 on The Roku Channel and "Conan O'Brien Must Go," premiering April 18 on MAX. Credit: AP
Zack Snyderâs âRebel Moon â Part Two: The Scargiverâ landing on Netflix and Taylor Swiftâs âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ album are some of the new television, movies, music and games headed to a device near you.
Also among the streaming offerings worth your time as selected by The Associated Pressâ entertainment journalists: A family of ducks is coaxed into flying south for the winter in the animated movie âMigrationâ and Conan OâBrien as the brunt of jokes is on full display in his new travel show âConan OâBrien Must Goâ for Max.
NEW MOVIES TO STREAM
â The cautious father (Kumail Nanjiani) of a family of ducks is coaxed into flying south for the winter in âMigrationâ (steaming Friday, April 19 on Peacock), the latest animation from Illumination, the maker of âDespicable Meâ and âThe Super Mario Bros. Movie.â Penned by âWhite Lotusâ creator Mike White, âMigrationâ is another, albeit more kid-friendly examination of the pros and cons of an exotic vacation. In my review, I wrote that âMigrationâ âis vividly animated with warm cartoon tones that would do Daffy proud. But it never quite spreads its wings.â With Elizabeth Banks, Danny DeVito, Carol Kane, Awkwafina and Keegan-Michael Key.
â People tend to love or hate the films of Zack Snyder, the maker of brawny CGI extravaganzas like âMan of Steel,â âJustice Leagueâ and âArmy of the Dead.â If youâre the former, the arrival of âRebel Moon â Part Two: The Scargiverâ (Friday, April 19 on Netflix) is a date youâve circled since the December debut of the first installment. Sofia Boutella and Djimon Hounsou lead the ensemble cast in Snyderâs âStar Warâ riff space opera.

â If some films are laden and overstuffed, how about those that pass like a brief encounter? A new series streaming on the Criterion Channel asks: How much can happen in a night? The series collects some of the best films that transpire entirely from dusk 'til dawn. Evenings may pass in conversation (âMy Dinner With Andreâ) or bloodshed (âNight of the Living Deadâ), but in all of them, the sun eventually arrives to break a nocturnal spell. Among the highlights: Elaine Mayâs âMikey and Nicky,â Martin Scorseseâs âAfter Hours,â Jim Jarmuschâs âNight on Earthâ and Agnes Vardaâs âClĂ©o from 5 to 7.â

NEW MUSIC TO STREAM
â It is Taylor Swift âs world, and we continue to just live in it. On Friday, April 19, the savior of both contemporary pop music and the U.S. economy will release her highly anticipated 11th studio album, âThe Tortured Poets Department.â Swift surprise-announced the release in February at the 2024 Grammys after receiving the trophy for best pop vocal album for her tenth LP, âMidnights.â No songs have been released from âTTPD,â so little is known about it â which only serves to heighten the anticipation. Here's what we do know: The day after the Grammys, Swift shared the track list, teasing 16 songs and two features: âFortnight,â featuring Post Malone â who is fresh off a feature on BeyoncĂ©'s âAct ll: Cowboy Carterâ â and âFlorida!!!â featuring Florence + the Machine. Other choice song titles include: âDown Bad,â âI Can Fix Him (No Really I Can),â âlomlâ and âClara Bow.â The physical release will include four variants, each featuring a different bonus track: âThe Manuscriptâ, âThe Bolterâ, âThe Albatrossâ, and âThe Black Dog.â At a show in Melbourne, Australia, Swift described the album as âa lifeline,â adding âIâve never had an album where I needed songwriting more than I needed it on âTortured Poets.ââ
â Three decades into their career, and Pearl Jamâs 12th studio album, âDark Matter,â arrives the same day as Swiftâs â but donât consider it competition; theyâre keeping it in the family. Both acts are signed to Republic Records. Produced by Andrew Watt, âDark Matterâ is Pearl Jamâs first new record since 2020âs âGigaton,â â a hard-rocking collection of songs from the saints of the 1990s Seattle scene that APâs Andrew Dalton described as âathletic in its speed, aggression, and tenacity, sounding like it would make men of their age sore in the aftermath.â Listen responsibly.
â AP Music Writer Maria Sherman
NEW SHOWS TO STREAM
â Fresh off her Oscar nomination, Lily Gladstone stars in a new limited series for Hulu called âUnder the Bridgeâ with Riley Keough. Based on a true-crime novel by Rebecca Godfrey, âUnder the Bridgeâ tells the story of the murder of Canadian teen Reena Virk in the late 1990s. Gladstone plays a police officer investigating the case and Keough plays Godfrey, who immersed herself in Virkâs world to detail not only what happened, but the social and cultural implications surrounding her death. âUnder the Bridgeâ premieres Wednesday on Hulu and is already garnering Emmy buzz for both Gladstone and Keough.
â Conan OâBrien loves to be the brunt of a joke and thatâs on full display in his new travel show âConan OâBrien Must Goâ for Max. Cameras follow the comedian as he visits countries like Ireland, Thailand, Argentina and Norway. When the series was announced last May, Max released the following quote from OâBrien, âMy fans around the globe never asked me to visit them, so I did.â âConan OâBrien Must Goâ debuts Thursday on Max.
â âBridgertonâ star Nicola Coughlan leaves the Regency era and steps into the present starring in the British comedy âBig Moodâ for Tubi. Coughlan plays Maggie, a young playwright with bipolar disorder who has decided to go off her meds to tap into her creativity. Maggie relies on her loyal best friend Eddie (Lydia West) to get her through her daily struggles, but their friendship is tested as Maggieâs mental health deteriorates. âBig Moodâ premieres Friday, April 19 on Tubi.
â The popular fantasy childrenâs book series âThe Spiderwick Chroniclesâ has been adapted for TV. The story follows teenage twins Simon and Jared and their older sister Mallory after they move to an old, family estate called Spiderwick, which is also inhabited by magical creatures. The show also stars Christian Slater, Joy Bryant and Jack Dylan Grazer. âThe Spiderwick Chroniclesâ premieres on Roku Channel on Friday, April 19.
â National Geographicâs popular âSecrets Ofâ franchise has a new installment called âSecrets of the Octopus.â Debuting Sunday, April 21, the three-part series details the surprising characteristics of octopuses. These marine animals may look funny, but they have a level of intelligence where they solve problems, scheme and even communicate with other species. Narrated by Paul Rudd and executive produced by James Cameron, the docuseries is inspired by the book and research of Sy Montgomery.
â Alicia Rancilio
NEW VIDEO GAMES TO PLAY
â The second thing youâll notice about Harold Halibut â after its goofy title â is its distinctive graphics. German indie studio Slow Bros. has built an entire game around hand-crafted models, and the result looks like stop-motion animation. The setting is a city-sized spaceship, the Fedora, that fled Earth 250 years earlier but unfortunately landed at the bottom of an alien ocean. Harold himself is the awkward young assistant to the shipâs chief scientist, whoâs trying to figure out how to get it back into space. Will Harold help with that relaunch â or will he find himself drawn into the mystery of this strange planet? Dive in Tuesday on PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S and PC.

Peter Duttonâs office billed taxpayers almost $6,000 for staff to travel with him when he attended Gina Rinehart party
Exclusive : Opposition leader travelled at own expense to lavish party, but documents reveal two staff also made the trip to Perth

Peter Duttonâs office claimed nearly $6,000 in public expenses for staff and security to travel to Perth with the opposition leader when he attended Gina Rinehartâs lavish birthday party.
Duttonâs office has said he travelled at his own expense to the party for Australiaâs richest woman , which included a horseriding performance, multiple large cakes and onstage pyrotechnics. But travel information obtained under freedom of information shows members of Duttonâs team â which his office said included a staffer and a security detail â claimed travel from Melbourne to Perth and back again on 29 February, the night of the party on the banks of the Swan River.
It was reported in March that Dutton attended Rinehartâs party after the end of a parliamentary sitting week, before appearing in Melbourne the next morning to campaign for the Dunkley byelection. The Australian Financial Review reported Dutton was spotted flying from Canberra to Melbourne, then travelling on to Perth before returning to Melbourne that same evening â potentially joining Rinehartâs party for as little as an hour.

Dutton was criticised at the time by 2GB host Ben Fordham for choosing to fly to Perth instead of spending more time campaigning in Dunkley, calling the opposition leaderâs decision âa bad callâ and suggested he should have âbrushedâ the party to campaign more in the crucial byelection.
âPeter Dutton spent more time on the aeroplane than he did at the party, which sounds like a waste of time to me,â Fordham said.
Laborâs Jodie Belyea won the byelection against Liberal challenger Nathan Conroy by a 53-47 margin.
The Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority (IPEA), the government body which manages parliamentariansâ work expenses, released information under FoI on Thursday to show Duttonâs office claimed flights between Melbourne and Perth on the day of â and the day after â Rinehartâs party. All were classified as having been claimed by âpersonal staffâ, rather than Dutton himself. Guardian Australia understands that any claim for Dutton himself would have been recorded and classified differently on the documents.
IPEA records show staff from Duttonâs office claimed a Melbourne to Perth flight on 29 February, the day of the party, costing $2,221.63. The same day, staff also claimed a Perth to Melbourne air fare, at $2,680.80.
The following day, 1 March, was another staff claim for a Perth to Melbourne air fare at $1,028.93.
In total, the three air fare claims between Melbourne and Perth came in at $5,931.36.
Guardian Australia contacted Duttonâs office for clarification on the claims. A spokesperson responded that the opposition leader travelled with one staff member and his security detail, which they said was appropriate and within travel rules.
Dutton is typically accompanied in public by a security detail, as are other senior politicians like prime minister Anthony Albanese and deputy PM Richard Marles.
after newsletter promotion
Duttonâs spokesperson also referred back to his remarks in March, at the time of the initial reporting on his Perth trip.
âThe air fares were at my expense, there was no accommodation. I flew back on the redeye so that I could be back into Melbourne at 4.30 the next morning,â Dutton said at the time.
âMy security detail operates exactly the same as the governor general and the prime minister.â
The lavish celebration for Rinehart, according to her companyâs websites, included âa horse show backed by the fantastic Aussie music, The Man from Snowy River, with riders ⊠carrying large Australian and company flagsâ.
The Perth lord mayor, Basil Zempilas, told 6PR radio he attended the event, calling the horseback show âan incredible sightâ, and saying the pop star Guy Sebastian had sung the national anthem.
Last year Dutton was flown to another Rinehart party at Hancock Prospectingâs Pilbara mine by another billionaire rich-lister , where he praised the mining magnate and her family as âpioneersâ who had âgiven so much to this countryâ.
