What’s The Best Way To Travel From Montreal To Quebec City

Montreal is only about 255 km (160 miles) away from Quebec City, making it one of the easier trips to make from Montreal . But because they’re so close, there are also a lot of options for travelling between both cities.

You can drive, take the bus, the train, or even fly from Montreal to Quebec City. At one point it was even possible to take a boat down the St. Lawrence from Montreal to Quebec City!

But with so many options, how do you know which one is the best for your trip? I’ll go in depth about each mode of transportation between Montreal and Quebec City. At the end of the day, it tends to come down to a question of flexibility vs. budget .

How To Get From Montreal To Quebec City: A Comparison

How To Drive From Montreal To Quebec City

Driving from Montreal to Quebec City is the cheapest and most flexible option . This is especially true if you already have a car .

Total drive time between both cities is about 2 hours and 45 minutes … however … it never ends up under 3 hours. So although it seems like the fastest option at first glance, it isn’t actually the case.

There’s always traffic somewhere between Montreal and Quebec City… So always expect the drive to take longer than the GPS says.

I’ve started the drive midweek, on the weekends, at all hours of the day and there’s always traffic somewhere. I guess I haven’t tried leaving in the middle of the night yet!

But if you drive to Quebec City, you will have full flexibility on when you want to leave. And you’ll have your car when you’re in Quebec City. So depending on what you’re planning on doing in Quebec City, having a car once you’re there may be more or less important to you.

On the negative side of driving to Quebec City, it is the most tiring (and potentially most stressful) model of transportation (for the driver anyway!). They obviously cannot just fall asleep for the next three hours.

Don’t Have A Car? Rent A Car In Montreal

If you don’t have a car, you can always rent a car to drive from Montreal to Quebec City. This will make driving a bit less budget friendly, but you will maintain some of that flexibility.

You will have to add in some extra time to get to the car rental to pick up the car.

Dealing With Parking In Quebec City

If you’re driving to Quebec City from Montreal, you’ll need to find parking in Quebec City.

There are quite a few parking lots in Quebec City where you can park a few hours at a time up to an entire month!

For shorter stays, park just outside the Old Town in Stationnement SPAQ – Honore-Mercier / Dauphine . It’s an underground parking lot in Place D’Youville. You’ll be very centrally located here!

If you’re planning on a longer stay in Quebec City, a more affordable option is to park a bit further from Old Town. We found long term parking at the Dorchester Parking Lot in the St. Roch.

Dorchester Parking is a large outdoor lot (which I prefer over the indoor parking garages, although indoor is always nice in the winter!), but it’s about a 20 minute walk from Old Town. We were easily able to come and go and there were always spots. Plus they offer discounts for longer stays .

Routes To Drive From Montreal To Quebec City

There are two routes that you can take from Montreal to Quebec City, one on either side of the St. Lawrence River. It’s whether you take highway 40 or highway 20 . 

The route you take will ultimately depend on how much traffic there is on either highway. We always prefer taking highway 40 because it’s just a bit more of an interesting drive.

Although, more often than not, it’s faster to take the 20 . We don’t love driving on the 20 – it’s a 2 lane highway that’s quite straight, flat, and boring. You’ll also have to cross the bridge back over the St. Lawerence to reach Quebec City.

But Do You Actually Need A Car In Quebec City?

Depending on what your plans are in Quebec City, you don’t really need a car once you’re there . If you want to stay within Old Town, then everything you want to see is within walking distance of one another.

Even if you want to explore some of the surrounding neighbourhoods (like St. Roch) they’re easily walkable from Old Town. In fact, we lived in St. Roch and walked everywhere! We would only take our car out on the weekends.

If you want to explore the outskirts of Quebec City (like Montmorency Falls) you still don’t need a car. There are shuttles, and even organized tours (like this one on Viator that takes you to Montmorency Falls , or this one that brings you to Île D’Orleans !).

Although it’s always nice to have a car when you’re exploring a new city, sometimes it’s just not worth the hassle.

Driving Alternative: RideShare To Quebec City From Montreal

Ride sharing is when you get a ride with someone who is already going to Quebec City. There are typically a lot of drivers to choose from as it’s a common route.

It’s a more affordable option, and perhaps offers a bit more flexibility than the next few travel options (like the bus or train).

You won’t be able to rely on a specific schedule, and there’s always a safety (and awkwardness) risk.

There are a few ride sharing websites that you can check, a popular site is Poparide . The cost depends on the driver, but it can start at $30 for one way. I like Poparide because it works like Uber, where the drivers have ratings. 

There is also a new Quebec company for ride sharing within Quebec called Eva . Perhaps it’s a bit more reliable, however it is also more expensive.

Taking The Bus From Montreal To Quebec City 

The bus is a stress free way to get to Quebec City from Montreal. It takes the same amount of time as driving (no surprises there), but now you don’t have the stress of driving . You can sleep the entire way there!

The bus from Montreal to Quebec City is through Orlean Express . There are 12 scheduled departures from Montreal to Quebec City every day of the week. They leave as early as 7:00 A.M. and as late as 9:30 PM.

There are 13 departures from Quebec City to Montreal and leave between 6:30 A.M. and 7:30 P.M.

So it’s not too bad for flexibility! You have a lot of departures to choose from.

For cost, it can range between $40 to $65. The price will vary based on time of day, and how far in advance you book. You might be able to score a cheaper ticket – these will be the promo seats .

Don’t forget you do have to add extra travel time to get to the bus station in Montreal and from the bus station in Quebec City…

Getting To & From The Bus Stations?

Thankfully both bus stations are very centrally located in Montreal and Quebec City

In Montreal, it’s at the Gare d’autocars de Montréal on Berri street. This is across the street from Berri-UQAM metro which connects to three metro lines . This makes it very accessible. There are also several bus routes that stop here.

In Quebec City, the bus drops you off at the Bus terminal at the Gare du Palais (the train station). This is only a 15-20 minute walk the centre of Old Town.

Montreal To Quebec City Train Tips

The train is very similar to the bus in several ways. They have the same flexibility in terms of following scheduled departure time. It’s still a very relaxing ride (if not more so on the train!).

The bus and train for the most part take about the same amount of time. Although, the train can vary between 3 hours and 15 minutes and 3 hours and 45 minutes .

The cost can be almost the same as well. In fact, sometimes it might even be cheaper to take the Montreal to Quebec City train . The cheapest seats start at only $42… but it can go all the way up to $220. So there’s quite a big range.

They do however only offer a limited number of seats at their cheapest fare. More likely than not, it will cost you closer to $90 to take the train.

The Montreal to Quebec City train line also has fewer departure times. From Montreal, the train leaves 5 times between 6:30 A.M. and 6:30 P.M.

On the weekend, there’s one less departure, so the earliest you can leave is at 9:00 A.M.

The biggest benefit of the train is that you don’t have to worry about longer travel times by getting stuck in traffic. Plus, it will most likely be more comfortable than taking the bus.

The train from Montreal to Quebec City is operated through Via Rail .

Getting To & From The Train Station 

When you take the train from Montreal to Quebec City, you also have to take into account your travel time to get to and from the train stations.

In Montreal, the train station is at Place Bonaventure. This is in the heart of downtown on the orange metro line. But it’s also not too far of a walk from the green line (either Peel or McGill metro stations).

P.S. If you’re flying in to Montreal first though, there is also a train station in Dorval (which is at the airport).

In Quebec City, the trains arrive at the Gare du Palais – which is the same place as where the bus arrives.

From the train station in Quebec City, it’s about a 15 minute walk to the heart of Old Town Quebec.

Flying From Montreal To Quebec City

If you’re really in a time crunch, you might want to consider flying – and yes, there are flights from Montreal to Quebec City.

It’s a bit shocking considering it’s less than three hours to drive. A nonstop flight is under one hour … but of course you have to add a bit more to that itinerary.

First, you have to arrive early to the airport. Because it’s a flight within Canada, it’ recommended to arrive 2 hours before departure. In the past, you only needed to arrive an hour before departure but not anymore. Which brings us right back to the 3 hour travel time . Check updated recommended arrival times.

And that doesn’t even include travel time to and from the airport… which is even longer because neither airport is in the city centre .

Plus, with flying, there are a few more things to consider – like now you have limits on what you can bring . This is probably the most stressful way to get from Montreal to Quebec City.

And let’s not forget about the cost of this flight which will put you out anywhere between $150 to $200 for one way. Or the possibility of cancellations and overbooked flights! Plus, this is the least flexible option with only 4 departure times during the day (through Air Canada).

There were up to 10 departures (all nonstop flights) but they were with smaller airlines (some of which I’ve never heard of!).

How To Get To & From The Airport

Airport transfers in montreal.

The airport in Montreal is in Dorval… in the West Island . That’s about a 30 minute drive from downtown.

You can take a taxi or Uber to the airport. Or there’s a bus (the 747 express) which takes about 45 to 70 minutes from Berri-UQAM metro. It runs 24/7 though.

You can also opt to go to Lionel-Groulx metro station which shortens the ride time to 25 to 35 minutes, but it only runs during peak hours.

Airport Transfers In Quebec City

In Quebec City, you’ll be in a similar boat once you arrive at the airport. It’s about a 30 minute drive to Old Town Quebec.

There are two bus routes that stop at the airport and go to downtown Quebec City – the 76 and 80.

Alternatively, they’ve set up a ride sharing program called Eva that will take you downtown with a trusted service. See an estimate for cost .

Alternative: Book An Organized Tour From Montreal

A very simple alternative to taking going by yourself to Quebec City from Montreal is to book an organized tour.

There are several organized tours from Viator that go from Montreal to Quebec City for the day.

By booking an organized tour, you don’t have to deal with the hassle of travel. Everything is figured out for you, from transportation to the schedule for the day.

Solo Trip to Canada: Should You Go to Quebec City or Montreal?

Y ou don’t need a travel companion or travel with a group to enjoy yourself. Some people prefer the solitude, others want to make new friends, and some like the rewarding feeling of doing something completely on their own.

In the region of Eastern Canada lies two French-speaking and most popular cities in the country, Quebec City and Montreal. Their history and culture are deeply rooted in the French Colonization and what these settlers brought into North America but they are still two very unique and distinct cities.

There are many fantastic things to do in each city, so it’s always hard to decide which one is a priority on your solo adventure. If you have been before you may love each city or not for several different reasons. But for those with wanderlust choosing to come here for the first time, it can be a difficult choice. That’s why we want to help you make an informed decision with our own recommendations and personal experience in each city.

So let’s dive in to see what each of these cities has to offer for you to end up with some good travel stories.

Location and Size

Montreal is the second-largest city in all of Canada, behind Toronto and ahead of Calgary. It’s the largest in the province, with Quebec City being second. Because of this, the location and population sizes are vastly different. Montreal is in the Southwestern part of the province with Quebec City being in the Eastern part. Montreal has a population of over 1.7 million and Quebec City is less than half that number at 557,375 from recent census takers.

This makes a significant difference in both hotel pricing and transportation throughout each city to the food and nightlife we will be comparing below.

Quebec City Hotels

Here in Quebec City, there is more a focus on the historic charm so you will find this inside older historical buildings, sometimes above restaurants and shops. These boutique hotels want to provide you with that classic French-Canadian experience which is both delightful and unique. The only drawback is that some of the rooms may be smaller than you are used to due to the original construction of the building. But does it matter that much if you are going to be out and about most of your day?

Most of these can be found near Old Quebec in small clusters. It also allows easier access to all the attractions and shops you will want to explore during your stay here. You may get lucky and have some rooms with great views of the river and city skyline to add to your trip. They are also budget-friendly to mid-range in price to make up for the space, such as Hotel Clarendon and Hotel Acadia. There are some luxury hotels like the Auberge Saint-Antoine and of course, the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac if you feel like splurging but they all provide acceptable accommodations and isn’t really necessary.

Montreal Hotels

The hotels in Montreal are more luxury hotel chains like Hilton, Ritz-Carlton, and Hyatt with modern contemporary designs. You also have more budget-friendly boutique hotels like Hotel Faubourg Montreal and Chateau Versailles Hotel. With additional features like rooftop bars and indoor high-end restaurants, you’re going to have a more cosmopolitan vibe here. Most are anywhere between 3 to 5 stars and there always seems to be available rooms all year-round.

Recommendation: Quebec City

Quebec City Transportation

Due to the layout and size of the city, the transportation here differs from Montreal. There is a public transit system but no metro system in this city. The public buses focus mainly on the city and the closest neighborhoods. Because of this, there is less coverage of the entire area resulting in longer wait times between buses if you are on the city outskirts. Tickets are affordable with single rides or day passes for your schedule.

You of course have the better option of a ride service as Uber is the most popular here. Once you arrive in the city center and attractions it’s less of a hassle to get around. It’s also a bike-friendly city with designated lanes and rental stations, especially in Old Quebec if you rather not walk.

Montreal Transportation

In Montreal, you have a commuter train, metro system, and bus network. You can get anywhere in the city easily with these transportation options. It has less of a wait time and better access for you. It’s a bit more expensive compared to Quebec City transportation but less than if you were to use a rideshare service. But the upside is you have more ticket options, including various discounts and unlimited travel. This works out better if you are staying for a longer period.

The downside is that this isn’t a completely walkable city. You will need to take some breaks to rest your feet and reliable transportation to get to some of the popular attractions and neighborhoods.

Recommendation: Montreal

Quebec City Cuisine

The food in Quebec City is of course more focused on the city’s French heritage. You will find plenty of fine dining eating options here. There is a focus of course on artisanal cheeses to go along with the game meats such as venison, wild boar, and caribou. Try the traditional dishes such as tourtière and of course, poutine, finishing off with a pouding chômeur dessert. Just be open-minded in trying something new and not go with your usual entree.

There is also a thriving cider community here as well. You can take a short day trip to Ile d’Orelans for a sightseeing tour of the many apple orchards and enjoy the unique regional beverages. The farmers markets here are usually seasonal but there are a lot of them. All the fresh and local produce being brought in is perfect if you are staying somewhere with a usable kitchen for homemade meals.

Montreal Cuisine

The culinary choices in Montreal are much wider than Quebec City being that you are in a metropolitan area. You can go from French to Chinese to Mexican to Contemporary to Italian all in the same area. There are plenty of fine dining choices and fusion mixes so you will always have a variety to choose from.

Montreal also has a larger public food market in comparison. You have the Jean-Talon Market, the largest and oldest open-air market on the entire continent as well as the smaller markets of Atwater and Maisonneuve. This is the recommended best place for foodies to enjoy all the delicious highlights while in Canada.

Quebec City Culture and Attractions

As Quebec City dates back to the 1600s, its focus is more on the history and culture, especially centered in Old Town with cobblestone streets. The more European feel it gives in North America is what makes it so attractive for tourism. It’s no wonder with the attractions that it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site There is really where you want to spend more of your time while you are here.

You can take your picture at the most photographed hotel in the world, the Chateau Frontenac, and then make your way down to the lower level to walk around the Petit Champlain. If you don’t feel like exploring solo, you can find locally guided tours to take you through the city and give you a more detailed history lesson.

Montreal Culture and Attractions

Montreal may have strong French influences but its culture is extremely diverse and has that atmosphere of being cosmopolitan. You can see that is aptly called neighborhoods like Little Italy, Chinatown, Latin Village, and so on. While still rich in culture and history, there are also more modern museums to explore. They are more comprehensive with subjects in contemporary art, science, natural history, and insects.

Quebec City Nightlife

In Quebec City, the nightlife here follows the same type of culture as it does in France. You will find it pretty active and vibrant throughout the season in the after-hours. The popular street of Rue Saint-Jean is filled with restaurants and bars close enough together that it’s easy to hop from one place to another and sample different drinks. The central square of Place d’Youville has ice rink skating during the winter and across the street is the Theatre Capitole for performing arts with live bands and musical performances. There are also plenty of nightclubs for those of you who feel like dancing.

There is just a sense of community still even when you are out for a night on the town. Maybe because you can walk wherever you need to go in a city of this size. Everything doesn’t seem to be packed in like a city and instead, you have room to breathe and walk around and enjoy the cool night air.

Montreal Nightlife

The nightlife here in Montreal is typical of any major city but with some slight differences. Such as there is a premium contemporary casino located on the island of Ile Notre-Dame. One of the largest casinos in the world, it will be worth checking out even if you aren’t a gambler.

Neighborhoods like Gay Village and Plateau-Mont-Royal along with Crescent Street just come alive even more when the sun is down. You’ve got cabaret drag shows, upscale cocktail lounges, speakeasies, musical jazz clubs, and lowkey pubs to just relax. Or if you feel like just taking a stroll you can see street performers at popular squares. There is something for everyone’s taste here.

Choose Quebec City if you are:

• Looking more for a European, medieval feel in the architecture and city streets
• Traditional Quebecois cuisine and culture
• Want a more quiet, less active, relaxing trip

Choose Montreal if you are:

• Looking to sample multiple cuisines in various neighborhoods
• You want a larger city to explore
• Want a more active, adventurous trip

Both cities have their positives and no real negatives to help deter you from picking either one, or even both if time permits. It comes down to your own personal preferences and maybe your potential budget. With Canada, you will always find it difficult to not have a good trip. Just always remember when you are on your solo journey, to travel safely.

• Train Service   Travelling by train from Montréal to Québec City with  VIA Rail  is another great way to travel. Seats are comfortable and Wi-Fi is available onboard. The trip takes about three and a half hours, departing from Montréal Central Station and arriving at Gare du Palais in downtown Québec City. Fares start at $30 one-way for economy class. 
• Rental Car   The most popular, and fastest, driving route between Montréal and Québec City is highway 20. The journey, depending on traffic, can take about three hours. 
• Bus Service   Travelling with  Orléans Express bus lines  between Montréal and Québec City is the best way to travel between the two cities if you are on a budget. The buses are comfortable, with Wi-Fi and electric outlets onboard. The journey takes about three hours and tickets start at around $25 one-way. Buses leave downtown Montréal every hour, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and arrive at Gare du Palais in downtown Québec City.

A few years ago, a Liberal MP on the Official Languages Committee ​​gingerly dared question proof of this decline . It was seen as heresy and she was ruthlessly and roundly castigated even from within her own party.

Recently, however, the OQLF published new data showing that the sky is not falling. Quebecers who use French most often in the public arena has remained unchanged in 15 years , at 79 per cent, with the proportion of those who use English most often has declined, even in Montreal. Most nationalist commentators, unsurprisingly, chose to ignore the study.

This week, another study by the OQLF showed that shoppers were able to be served in French 98 per cent of the time . On Montreal Island, despite nearly half the population being non-mother-tongue francophone, the OQLF’s undercover inspectors were greeted with “Bonjour” 83 per cent of the time. However, in 12 per cent of those cases, there was also an English “Hi” tacked on. So instead of acknowledging what should have been more positive news about the progress of French, cue the outrage — churn out more agitation.

The “Bonjour-Hi” debate exposes an inconvenient truth, an ugly undercurrent that it’s not really about the right to be served in French in Quebec, but for many, just hearing English is taboo. French Language Minister François Roberge and Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante both contributed to deepening divisions this week by criticizing the use of the word “Hi.” Roberge said: “The declining use of French to welcome Quebecers is a sign that French is less and less the normal language of business and commerce in Quebec.”

Such comments are foolish . “Bonjour-Hi” doesn’t cause French to “decline.” Bonjour is still clearly predominant. It’s not a zero-sum game. The greeting signals that you are to be served in French, but (psst), if you happen to be English-speaking, we can also accommodate you. That is called respect — both for the French language and for the human being, the individual client. It is politeness. It is class.

Most anglophones agree that with the preponderance of U.S. media and culture within North America, French in Quebec must be protected and promoted. But from someone who spent several years in the National Assembly, where every tentacle of government operates exclusively in French, I find it incomprehensible to imagine that the language is in danger of disappearing.

As for the City of Montreal, Article 1 of its charter says it is a French-speaking city . Every borough operates almost exclusively in French, including those with significant anglophone populations. Reconstituted cities on the island that have bilingual status provide full French services.

Furthermore, most anglophones welcome Montreal’s character as a predominantly French city and want to maintain that richness. But they are equally part of its fabric, having largely contributed to the city’s history and dynamism. Plante is relegating many Montrealers to second-class citizenry, suggesting they hide in the shadows like Cinderella. I expect many anglophones will have difficulty voting for her next year.  

Hysteria, exaggerated narratives and random anecdotes about not being served in French hijack public policy toward inevitably harmful actions such as discriminatory language legislation and attacks on world-class institutions, while other social issues fester. And opposition to something as benign as saying “Hi” signals disrespect, symbolically denying the existence of “les autres” in Montreal — which could further discourage their own collective desire to willingly embrace the French language.
