Culture and customs.

Botswana has quite a diverse culture, with many different tribal influences coexisting with European influences, which were brought to the country more recently. The tribal (or ethnic) groups within Botswana (Tswana, Kalanga, Basarwa and Kgalagadi) have different languages, traditional dances and clothing, and live a vastly different lifestyle to city-dwellers. Overall though, good manners will go a long way in Botswana, as formal greetings, respect for others and politeness are valued by most in society. Travelers will find most locals to be kind and welcoming, with offers of hospitality commonplace.

Immerse yourself in Botswana's culture on our 7 day Premium Botswana tour.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world. Food in Botswana is quite basic and usually consists of millet, sorghum, goat or beef, but there are a few highlights.

Things to try in Botswana

This classic dish of shredded beef served with maize meal and cabbage is considered to be Botswana's national dish and can be found in most restaurants and cafes.

2. Bush tea

Also known as Rooibos, this red-hued tea is drunk widely throughout Southern Africa. Pure, natural, high in antioxidants and void of caffeine, you'll see locals drinking it everywhere from city cafes to village huts.

3. Fresh fruit

Local produce in Botswana is quite good but their melons are generally the stand out. For a cheap and healthy snack, try watermelon, marula or lerotse, which can be found at markets and street stalls.

Delight your tastebuds on our 10 day Botswana Adventure.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Botswana sits in Southern Africa and is bordered by   Namibia ,   South Africa   and   Zimbabwe . Most of Botswana is relatively flat, although some mountainous areas can be found. Botswana’s topography is an interesting mix of desert, wetland and tableland, with the Kalahari Desert accounting for up to 80% of the country. Most of Botswana’s population choose to live in the eastern part of the country due to the central and southwest regions being dominated by the Kalahari Desert. Much of Botswana's north and west is taken up by the expansive Okavango Delta, which comprises more than 6,200 sq miles of channels and islands.

Explore Botswana's amazing landscapes on our 9 day Okavango & Beyond tour.

History and government

Early history.

The land of Botswana and surrounding regions have been inhabited by tribal groups for thousands of years, with tribes migrating into the area, from the lands now known as Zambia and Congo, sometime around 200-500 AD.

In 1885, the region came under British influence and became known as the Bechuanaland Protectorate, mainly as a tactic to avoid being overrun by the Boers who were campaigning in the region. This status continued for decades, until increasing nationalism in the 1950s led to an internal push for independence.

Recent history

Although never officially colonized, Botswana was granted independence from Britain on September 30th, 1966. Diamonds were discovered in the country in 1967, which provided a steady stream of revenue that continues to this day. Unlike many other African nations, Botswana enjoys peace, prosperity and a relatively high standard of living. Equal rights and freedom of speech are granted to all under the constitution, the economy is stable due to the growth of the mining and tourism industries, and literacy rates are improving rapidly.

Top 10 Animals of Botswana

1. african elephant.

Botswana is home to one of the world's largest populations of African elephants. Nothing beats encountering a herd of these majestic beasts while out on safari. It's an iconic African travel moment to treasure!

2. Cape Vulture

This endangered species is fully protected in Botswana, although the global population has sadly been in decline for years. Playing an important part in the food chain, this imposing bird can be found all throughout Botswana. See them while you can.

3. Chacma Baboon

Botswana's largest primate belongs to the old-world monkey family and can be found in the Okavango Delta region of Botswana. With a distinctive dog-like face and very sharp teeth, they aren't beauty pageant contenders but have a lovable charm of their own.

4. Flamingo

One of the most curiously beautiful birds in Africa, pink flamingos can be found in the salt pans and wetlands of the north. If you're heading to Botswana, try to catch them in all their blush-pink avian glory.

5. Lesser Bushbaby

The nocturnal bushbaby is a distant relative of the lemur and can be found in the northern parts of Botswana. While they are hard to spot, you can usually hear them crying out from the trees in the night.

Time seems to stand still when a pride of regal lions present themselves. Watch safari-goers and other animals stop in their tracks and collectively hold their breath in respect (and fear) for these beautiful beasts.

7. Kori Bustard

Large populations of the world's heaviest flying bird live in Botswana and are easily spotted due to their large, crested head. Although capable of flight, the kori bustard is usually found on the ground foraging for lizards and insects.

There's no doubt - the national animal of Botswana is one of the most striking in the world. Zebras can be found in the reserves, parks and bush of Botswana and due to their zany black and white coat, they're not hard to spot.

9. Black Mamba snake

While we hope there are no close encounters with this highly venomous snake, they're worth a mention as the black mamba is abundant in Botswana and known for being one of the most dangerous snakes in the world. Respect!

Botswana has many sanctuaries dedicated to the preservation of endangered animals, and the community-based Khama Rhino Sanctuary is an excellent example of how the decline of a species can be put into reverse. See rare black and white rhinos here and marvel at their strength and enormity.

Botswana has everything from western-style malls to village markets and craft cooperatives. While Botswana’s wildlife and landscapes are undoubtedly the main attractions, there are enough shopping highlights here to fill a backpack.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. United States and Canada generally have strict customs laws.

Things to buy in Botswana

1. Elephant dung paper

Yes, you read it correctly, you’ll be able to find recycled paper products made from elephant dung in Botswana. Handmade cards, envelopes and journals make interesting, environmentally aware gifts for friends back home – and don’t worry, they don’t smell.

2. Handmade baskets

The basket weavers of Botswana are considered among Africa’s best, so pick up a colorful, handwoven basket made using techniques that have been passed down through generations.

Modern and traditional art by talented local artists can be found in sophisticated city galleries and sleepy country markets. Supporting local artisans is a good way to assist the community, empower people and ensure your souvenirs are authentic.

Pick up some traditional souvenirs on our 9 day Botswana Highlights tour.

Festivals and events in Botswana

Maitisong festival.

This annual performing arts festival gifts the city of Gaborone with a carnival of color. Over nine days, the streets and performance venues are filled with traditional dancing, theatre, music and a whole lot of fun.

Botswana Day

This annual celebration of Botswana's independence sees locals indulging in food, beer and music. While not a cultural event, it's a great time to feast and party with locals as displays of happiness and national pride spill out on to the streets.

When is the best time to visit Botswana?

Winter (April through August) is a good time to visit Botswana. The days are usually mild and wildlife is generally quite easy to spot. The summer can bring frequent rain, which can make it difficult to travel around some of the national parks. Wildlife also tends to disperse during the summer rains, making animals a little harder to spot.

There is no option for travelers without a vaccination certificate to be vaccinated on arrival. Please note this also includes transiting through an infected country or region.

Children traveling to Botswana: Please note that if you’re traveling to Botswana with a person under the age of 18 then you need to provide a certified copy of the child’s full unabridged birth certificate in order to enter the country (the one listing the child’s details and both parents’ details. - the short birth certificate which only lists the child’s details won’t be accepted).

8 Days Safari tour itinerary for Makgadikgadi Pan, Maun & Nxai Pan National Park: Unite With The Wild Side Of Botswana

We had a wonderful time! Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba were excellent as drivers, guides, cooks, and problem solvers. We ate very well indeed. I will comment that the tour we took was quite different from the stated description of it. For example, we did not go to the salt pan. It seems that Rocky, the boss of the crew, received a different itinerary than what we thought we would be doing. How did that happen? The places we did go were terrific, and it was not until the second last day of the trip, that we realised the discrepancy. Rocky offered us a way to go to the salt pan, but for a couple of reasons, we declined that offer. Please note that I am not complaining about Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba. They followed the information they had received. I will also say that while we were accepting of the situation, some people could have reacted differently, and that would not have been fair to our crew. To summarise, we loved the trip! Credit to Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba for looking after us so well and sharing their beautiful country with us. Sincerely, Arthur George Busch

Best time to go to Botswana

For the best chance of spotting the Big Five, head to Botswana during the dry season from May to October, when animals will congregate at the watering holes to drink and bathe. You can expect lovely sunny days at this time of year, but it will feel chilly in the morning and evening so bring a few layers to keep warm on early morning safari drives.

If you want to avoid the crowds, a trip in March or November will be much quieter, and flights are cheaper too. You may experience a few showers in the afternoon, but the game reserves will be vibrant and lush. These are also good months to catch sight of newborn animals, and you might even spot a few migratory birds.

For a holiday season with a difference, head to Botswana in December when the safari parks will be much quieter. Rainfall will be more prevalent with thunderstorms in the afternoon, but dusty plains transform into a verdant oasis of leafy acacia trees and grassy meadows. Keep a look out for antelope calves and a plethora of exotic birdlife.

Botswana Tours & Travel Guide

Botswana Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Landlocked Botswana, wedged between South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, is the home of one of the latest UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Okavango Delta . The Okavango Delta floods annually from June to October and attracts countless animals - a huge draw for safari goers.

Botswana is located in southern Africa and is home to a variety of protected wildlife. One of the fastest growing economies in the world, Botswana relies heavily on tourism and offers a range of travel experiences from luxury to budget options. Most travelers to Botswana embark on safaris in the country’s national parks and game reserves.

Perhaps taking a cue from the crowded game parks of East Africa, Botswana has made it a national policy to limit mass tourism and, in so doing, caters primarily to upscale travelers. This doesn’t mean that budget travelers are completely locked out, but it does mean that prices are generally higher in Botswana than in many other safari regions.

Politically, the sparsely populated country is stable and safe for travelers, and scenically, it remains mostly unspoiled wilderness; many of the game parks are unfenced, allowing animals to roam free. Conservation and the environment are taken seriously here, and eco-tourism is the watchword at Botswana’s excellent safari lodges.

Botswana is largely a desert country, and lacks a coastline, but it does harbor a remarkable water feature that’s one of Africa’s great natural wonders, the Okavango Delta. Each winter in northern Botswana, primarily in July and August, the Okavango River, swollen from the preceding rainy season, floods the delta, forming an unlikely oasis in the vast Kalahari Desert. The flood waters attract animals who gather in the hundreds of thousands to drink at this huge seasonal watering hole in the otherwise dry winter months.

Top Wildlife Sightings in Botswana

Botswana is famous for its “Big 5” wildlife-- lions, leopards, rhinoceros, African elephants, and cape buffalo. The term “Big 5” was initially assigned to these animals as they are the most difficult to hunt on foot, but is now used widely in African safaris and tours.

Botswana has the largest population of elephants of any country in the world, many of them within Chobe National Park . The best time to see elephants is May through July, when herds begin migrating towards more reliable sources of water.

Rhino populations have been on the rise recently due to local and national conservation efforts after being critically endangered for many years. The best place to see these majestic animals is at Khama Rhino Sanctuary, where you can learn about rhino conservation and see them up close.

Botswana is also one of the last remaining homes for the endangered African wild dog . The protected open spaces in Botswana makes it a perfect place for the species to hunt and thrive.

Finally, the annual zebra migration in Botswana is one of the largest mammal migrations in the world. The migration occurs around March to April every year as herds of zebra make their way from the Okavango Delta to the Boteti River, where water and fresh grazing can sustain them until the rainy season.

Delta Wildlife

Delta wildlife includes the Big Five, as well as hippos, giraffes, wildebeest, cheetahs, zebras, crocodiles, hyenas, antelopes, warthogs, baboons and more. In all, the delta harbors more than 120 species of mammals.  Prolific bird life  is a bonus: the delta harbors as many as 500 species. See Botswana birding tours »

While 4X4 game drives, walking safaris and night safaris are offered here, the ultimate treat is to travel through the delta’s narrow channels by traditional dugout canoe, known as a  mokoro .

Poled through the shallow water by experienced oarsmen, the mokoros glide slowly along, coming sometimes perilously close to hippos and crocodiles but providing otherwise unattainable photo ops. Motorized boats are also available for those nervous in a canoe, though you lose some of peace and tranquility.

National Parks in Botswana

Botswana boasts thirteen protected parks and game reserves; four of these are national parks.

1. Chobe National Park is particularly famous for its large concentrations of wild animals such as African elephants and zebras.

2. The Makgadikgadi Pan is a salt pan located in central Botswana and is a beautiful place to take photos and see herds of wildlife migrating across the inhospitable terrain.

3. Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is located on the border of Botswana and South Africa and was created to protect wildlife traveling across the border of the two countries. This park is home to many large mammals, including a large population of lions.

4. The scenic views and wildlife at Nxai Pan National Park makes this a great location for a safari, especially if you’re looking to avoid the crowds.

Top cultural activities in Botswana

1. Bushman Museum - The San people, also known as the Bushmen, are indiginous people of Botswana. They have been around for tens of thousands of years.

As tourism expands, tribes and advocacy groups have had to fight for the communities to be protected and allowed to stay on Botswana soil. The Bushman Museum in Ghanzi is a great place to learn about the history and culture of the San people .

2. Tsodilo Hills -  Visit the Tsodilo Hills to see the ancient rock art created by the Bushmen. This is one of the most significant archeological sites in the world and gave experts insight into the lives of early humans.

3. Maun - The city of Maun is known as the “gateway to the Okavango Delta” and a popular destination for travelers to Botswana. This city is a great place to try traditional Botswana cuisine, shop at local shops and markets, and attend cultural events such as concerts and festivals.

Food in Botswana

Food in Botswana tends to center around the high-quality meat that is produced in the country, including beef, goat, and chicken. Botswana boats an especially strong cattle industry; steaks and beef stews are common.

Local dishes include soups, stews, meats, and sauces. Seswaa is a traditional meat stew common at important events and celebrations. And if you’re feeling brave, fried mopane worms are a popular delicacy.

Despite the prevalence of meat in local dishes, most restaurants and lodges will have a decent selection of vegetarian and vegan food. Markets also tend to carry an array of locally-grown vegetables.

On small group safaris, I can see how the dynamic in the group develops over time. Guests meet as strangers and part as friends. Everyone comes with different expectations; and my job as a guide is to ensure everyone has the experience they are looking for. Since our group sizes are smaller than with other operators, we can personalise the experience for everyone, even if it’s a group tour.

SMALL AND PERSONAL LODGES AND CAMPS

Many people associate group tours exclusively with camping tours, but with us, this is not the case. Of course, we offer mobile camping on a group basis, but we have also carefully crafted small group lodge tours too. And the best part is, because of our small group size, we can often stay at small, handpicked lodges. Accommodations where you are greeted by your name and not by a three-digit room number. The lodges we use on our small group safaris lie within the three-to-four-star quality range and particular emphasis is given to their character and excellent location.

Highlights on small group tours, what to expect on a small group safari in botswana.

Travelling in a small group is one of the easiest ways to explore some of the best wildlife areas of Botswana. We offer small group departures for our lodge safaris and mobile camping tours . No matter the accommodation, each departure will always include the services of an excellent safari guide and you will travel in a first class 4×4 safari vehicle, custom designed for great game viewing. If you are an openminded traveller who likes to meet people, then a Botswana small group tour could be perfect for you.

You will travel in a 4x4 safari vehicle, specially designed for wildlife viewing. On our camping safaris we make use of open safari vehicles.

Why to go on a small group safari in Botswana

Small group travel is the best value for money way to explore Botswana for single travellers and couples alike. Cost of travel is shared between the group which means you are able to visit more places and experience more things at a lower price than if you travel privately . Naturally, this is one of the reasons why travellers from all over the world love to take part in our small group tours. And, when we say small, we mean it. Our group departures are guaranteed with a minimum of two and a maximum of seven or eight people, depending on the itinerary. With a small group size like this, you will never feel crowded when on safari or overwhelmed by the size of your group.

Advantages of travelling with a group

Our small group sizes have many additional advantages. Just three further advantages are:

  • They allow us to go on safari in our own 4×4 safari vehicles, which are custom built to ensure excellent game viewing possibilities.
  • Your dedicated safari guide will be able to focus more on the needs and wishes of each member of the group than would be the case in a larger group.
  • A smaller group means less time waiting for other travellers, easier travel logistics and generally a more relaxed atmosphere on safari.

With a small group safari, everything is already in place and pretty much ready for you. Once you have found an itinerary which is perfect for you, you can simply hop on board…figuratively. Everything will be prepared and taken care of for you. This makes group safaris especially popular with people who are very busy in their everyday lives as well as potential last-minute travellers. There really is something thrilling about a spontaneous, last-minute decision to go on safari, and we can make that happen for you.

Where to go on a small group tour in Botswana

A small group safari will also in no way leave you feeling like you missed out on seeing something spectacular in Botswana. The destinations visited on our group safaris range from the wide expanses of the Kalahari, including the famous salt pans of the Makgadikgadi and Nxai , to the wildlife rich northern regions of the Chobe National Park , the Savuti region, the Moremi Game Reserve and even the Okavango Delta .

You can visit these world-famous national parks and public game reserves and in certain places, even stay at some of the exclusive private game reserves and private concession areas. These are particularly enticing as access is limited to only a certain number of people. The length of a scheduled group safari can range between four and eleven days of adventure and safari filled bliss. And we have a variety of small group itineraries available, meaning that you can choose for how long you would like to travel Botswana and select an itinerary which suits you.

19 things to know before visiting Botswana

Melanie van Zyl

Oct 22, 2023 • 9 min read

These top tips can help you make the most out of a visit to Botswana © wetraveltolive / Shutterstock

Having driven alone around Botswana and across most of southern Africa, I've learned a few things from traveling as a female . The most important lesson? Just go.

From Botswana’s arid south to the Okavango Delta and bountiful Chobe region beyond, this peaceful country is a joy to explore. Here are the top things to know before you visit Botswana.

lioness in front of a 4x4 safari car crossing a dirt road in Kalahari desert, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Botswana, Africa

1. Getting around is a challenge, and you'll probably need a 4WD vehicle

Botswana's best adventures are wild and far from civilization – but public transport will only get you so far. It’s possible to plan a sedan-friendly road trip on paved roads, but Botswana is known for the allure of its remote wilderness rather than its big cities.

If you’re traveling independently and national parks are on your bucket list, you need a 4WD vehicle and must understand seasonal road conditions.

A fully equipped 4WD is typically rigged with rooftop tents. This means you can sleep higher up away from dangerous animals, and it comes with all the necessary camping gear for a self-sufficient adventure. These rugged vehicles can be picked up in Maun , Kasane , or Johannesburg (South Africa) and rented from companies such as Bushtrackers Africa . They generally cost US$150 per day.

Ask the rental company about the best times to visit specific areas (the answer will often be in the dry season) and explain their emergency protocols and recovery support. For example, do they have an office and spare parts in Maun?

Driving through Botswana's national parks and game reserves is not to be underestimated. As a rule, it's safest to travel with a satellite phone in case of a breakdown or with at least one other vehicle.

2. Plan for roads to be in bad condition

The back roads in Botswana generally aren’t in good condition – and neither are some of the main highways. If you see a track or dirt road to the left of the main route, the road ahead is likely horribly potholed. As a rule, it’s almost always best to take the unofficial detour.

Whether paved or not, don't be fooled by short distances. Plan extra time into your itinerary to account for these slow-going conditions – potholes, rutted roads and deep sand – and breathing room to stop and snap more photographs. Refer to Tracks4Africa  and download the Maps.Me app. This is the most accurate way to judge time over a given distance for Botswana's best off-road routes. Having paper maps, especially ones that include dirt roads and tracks, is useful as well.

Setting up camp in the Moremi game reserve with a tent on top of a 4WD in Bostwana

3. Book campsites and lodges in advance during Botswana’s peak season

Luxury stays in faraway fairytale locations and self-drive expeditions between remote campsites both require a decent amount of advance booking – especially when traveling in peak season between June and September.

July and August are the busiest months in Botswana when campsites fill up with intrepid travelers from overseas and safari-loving South Africans enjoying a winter bush break. Campgrounds inside the national parks are limited and run by different private operators. Call directly to book and start planning well in advance. Typically, response times over email are prolonged.

4. Carry physical proof of your booking

There is very little cellular signal and connectivity in these wonderful wilds, meaning you won’t be able to search your inbox easily. Print out proof of booking before your journey and draw cash in the local currency (pula) to pay the park fees. Expect to be turned away at the park's gate if there is no space (and it's invariably a long trip back to the nearest town).

5. How long should I spend in Botswana?

Most safaris start either in Maun or Kasane and circuit from there. With a week or less, maximize your time by flying into a lodge or camp. It's easy to reach most far-flung lodges and camps by charter flight on the six-, nine- and 12-seater Cessna planes. You’ll touch down in the middle of nowhere (between 20 to 50 minutes’ flight time from Maun), where wildlife wanders across the runway. Spending three nights in one place will best compensate for the travel time (and airport waits) between locations.

If you have 10 days or more, discover Botswana on a road trip, although the journey will feel rushed if you try to cram in all the wildlife hotspots, especially with the added toils of camping every day. Two weeks is a more reasonable duration to soak up the gorgeous diversity of the Delta and the desert and to make an overnight sightseeing stop at Victoria Falls.

6. Travel solo outside of peak safari season, but don’t drive alone

Solo supplements are often waived outside peak season, and this is the easiest time to nab a last-minute booking. The cheapest time to visit Botswana is between November and February, and you can still spot wildlife then. The landscape is lush, green, dramatic with epic cloud formations, and brimming with colorful birds, blooms, and butterflies. However, this “green season” can also be the trickiest period to self-drive because the national parks and campsites have more mud and water, making some tracks impassable.

Instead, it’s a superb time to fly into a high-end lodge. Many companies waive the single supplement for solo travelers in the low season, too – and you’ll find plenty of company. Dinner is frequently enjoyed around a communal table to compare sightings with other guests and learn more about life in Botswana from local camp managers or your guide. Another plus? More daylight hours to enjoy it all.

7. Just remember, you can't hop into a mokoro at any time of the year

Water levels are generally at their highest in the Okavango Delta during July and August (which is also the priciest time of year to go on safari). Ask about the seasonality of gliding in a mokoro (traditional canoe) and time your trip to guarantee an outing on the water. For a fun weekend and more traditional insight into the importance of the mokoro , tie your trip with a visit to the annual Nkashi Classic festival .

8. Greet people in Setswana

The Batswana emphasize extensive greetings. Before asking for help, salutations go a long way and it’s respectful to greet everyone present, starting with the elders. If you are addressing a woman, say “Dumela, mma” and to a man, “Dumela, rra”. For a group of people, a simple “Dumelang” will do. Asking how a person is doing and whether they slept well will score even more points.

9. Dress respectfully in rural areas

While most tourist haunts adhere to Western dressing norms, this isn't the case everywhere, particularly in rural areas. Women in Botswana typically dress modestly and wear skirts that cover the knees. It's best to follow this custom when visiting an office, police station, or government building and when meeting distinguished members of society, such as the chief.

10. You don't have to wear khaki on safari

Any neutral-toned clothing will do as long as it's comfortable and lightweight and your shirt isn't too brightly colored. The only time beige and blending in is genuinely preferred is during a walking safari .

11. Pack a warm coat, but also a bathing suit

It's essential to layer up because Botswana experiences chilly mornings and evenings. Game drives and morning activities can be cold. In winter, temperatures can drop below freezing in desert areas, but then the mercury climbs with the sun and you can frequently take a dip in the pool come afternoon.

12. A pair of binoculars will revolutionize your safari

Unless you’re on safari in a private reserve where guides can off-road into the bush, you'll probably witness wildlife from a distance. Bring a good pair of general-purpose binoculars (specifications 8x40 or 10x42) and a decent zoom camera lens.

13. How to leave a tip in Botswana

It's customary to tip lodge staff and safari guides, providing the service was good. Travel agents advise giving roughly US$15 per guest, per day directly to the guide and $10 to the rest of the staff, which usually goes into a collective kitty. The US dollar is widely accepted at lodges and hotels throughout the country.

14. Is Botswana a conservative country?

Women traveling alone can expect to be asked if they have a husband or boyfriend. It's still not common to see independent travelers, and a band on your wedding finger can deter unwanted advances. It's even less common to see same-sex relationships. Homosexuality was decriminalized in 2019 but it is still stigmatized, and public displays of affection could attract negative attention.

15. Whatever you do, avoid driving at night

Obstinate donkeys, roaming elephants, goats, wayward cattle and ostriches are just some of the wildlife that walk the roads of Botswana. Drive with extreme caution and avoid driving at night.

16. Your shoes might carry disease

Beef is a valuable export and cows are a treasured signifier of cultural wealth in Botswana. To prevent the spread of disease, specifically foot-and-mouth, fences have been erected to separate domestic beasts from wild animals (admittedly, not always effectively). Farmers, families, and industry face financial catastrophe if cattle succumb to this infectious disease.

It’s illegal to transport raw animal products or select fruits and vegetables from wilderness areas (mainly in the north) to rural areas (mostly in the south). Always stop at the official fence boundaries and road gates, even if they appear abandoned. Sometimes, an official sitting in the shade nearby will wave you through, but every vehicle is subject to inspection.

Ready the cooler boxes and make fridges accessible for checks. You'll also need to disinfect your shoes and stamp them in a sanitizing station to stop the potential spread. Keep all shoes aside or in crates to prevent the disinfectant from covering other gear.

17. You can drink the tap water in Botswana, but...

Tap water in towns is usually fine but probably not what you're used to, which can cause stomach upsets. At tourist lodges, the tap water is filtered. Many campsites do not have water at all, but grocery stores stock big bottles for overlanders.

18. Pack insect repellent and use it for a peaceful sleep

Malaria is present in Botswana and widespread in the north. Consult your doctor about the latest anti-malaria precautions before you travel. Use insect repellent liberally. Most lodgings supply an insect repellent called Peaceful Sleep, which locals use to keep unwanted buzzing and biting at bay.

19. Watch out for petty theft

Although crime is rare in Botswana, petty theft and sometimes pickpocketing can occur in the cities. As you would in most cities, be vigilant with your valuables and avoid walking alone at night or in poorly lit areas.

There has also been a spate of midnight thefts at campsites near safari pit stops. Thieves typically smash the windows of a car to snatch valuables. Do not leave your passport, camera, wallet, or phone visible or within reach.

Zebra in Botswana

Botswana is dominated by the dry Kalahari Desert 'thirst land'. The landscape ranges from wide, open savannah scrub land and vast salt-pans to the unique inland waterways of the Okavango Delta. Much of Botswana is remote and remains accessible to only a small number of visitors, thus making the country an ideal wilderness experience.

7 Highlights from our Botswana Trip

Written by co-founder: leah green.

Botswana has always been one of my favorite places to visit in Africa. The unique experiences from our trip this past July reinforced exactly why it is a must-see destination for anyone looking for adventure in the bush. When I think of Botswana , I think of remote untouched wilderness, off-the-beaten-path luxury, and exciting wildlife encounters at every turn. If you’re interested in learning what makes Botswana such a special place, here are 7 highlights from our recent trip that’ll have you ready to book your next visit!

1. Authentic Moments with the Zu/’hoasi

Outside of the wildlife and beautiful landscapes, what truly makes Africa so special are the people who live there. I’ll jump at any opportunity to authentically connect with local Africans, as my fondest travel memories are made up of these moments. At Jack’s Camp in the Kalahari , we had the opportunity to spend the morning walking with a local tribe of Zu/’hoasi Bushmen. July is the peak of winter, and we all shared a chuckle as Kyle and I joined the group bundled up with layers of clothes and mittens, and the Bushmen proudly met us in their traditional attire made of animal hides. We shared even more laughs while attempting to participate in their version of ‘Rock-Paper-Scissors’ and truly enjoyed eachothers company. Learning about their daily lives, the natural resources they rely on, and how they sustain themselves was truly enlightening.

2. Denning Wild Dogs

If you’ve been on safari, you’ll know that some animals live a slower lifestyle and are easier to view. Some are not. The African wild dog is always on the move, and can be tough to track and keep up with. These fast paced predators are fascinating to watch if you catch them before a hunt, or while they are at rest. As highly endangered as they are, their numbers are very strong in Botswana, while they are virtually non-existent in East Africa. Lucky for us, many packs in the area were denning with litters of young puppies, so the animals hunted and remained in a certain area over an extended period of time. What a gift it is to know where a wild dog’s den is – for nothing is sweeter than a pack of playful pups. Throughout our trip, we had the chance to see three different dens and view these magnificent animals up close.

3. Delta Views from the Sky

When you think of the Okavango Delta , stunning water ways are what immediately come to mind. We had the chance to skip our bush flight and travel by helicopter from one lodge to the next, and it was truly something special. The sheer size of the Delta and its meandering waterways is hard to comprehend until you see it from the sky. The aerial views allowed us to see the big picture, as well as the small details that make it such a unique ecosystem. A highlight for me was watching a distant lagoon speckled with grey dots become a herd of 30 elephants, splashing and playing in the water. It is easy to get caught up while you’re on vacation, and this special experience allowed us to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the Botswana.

4. Fine Dining in the Bush

A safari schedule is full of food. Don’t get me wrong – I NEVER miss a meal on safari.  Lodges always provide delicious snacks for every occasion, incredible menus with traditional flavors and plenty of cocktails to wash them all down. In recent years, we’ve seen some of the more luxurious lodges shifting away from their heavier menu items to lighter options. After a recent refurb, Duma Tau’s lodge is not the only showstopper in town. The chef’s fresh take on farm-to-table and sustainable dining was absolutely exquisite. Traveling while pregnant, it was no question that my ‘healthy appetite’ would follow me around, but I was truly wowed by the unique pairings and delicate flavors on the menu. The use of locally sourced produce, and superfoods like baobab and Kalahari truffles, were special additions to the menu. When you’re still thinking about a meal three months later, that means something.

5. Swimming Elephants and Snorkels

If you haven’t seen it before, picturing an elephant swimming can be hard to do. I’ve been on safari more times than I can count, but until our recent visit to Linyanti , I had never actually seen elephants swimming. During this time of the year, elephants will cross back and forth in the deep channels, and it is not something you want to miss! As we jumped in our boat for an evening sundowner, we had the pleasure of watching a small herd of elephants cross. As they quickly reached the deeper water, their trunks went straight up in the air, until all you could see was a group of trunk-snorkels making their way to the other side of the channel. A young elephant was seen bouncing up and down, as neighboring adults gave it a generous push to help it along the way. This was such a special sighting and one that I will never forget.

6. Face to Face with a Giant

During this same boating excursion, while I was still coming down from my swimming-elephant high, we took our time slowly cruising through the channels and taking in the scenic beauty. As the sun was setting, we came across a young male elephant, fully submerged and dining on the softened roots of water lilies. We were able to get within feet of this incredible animal, watching him twist and twirl the stems like spaghetti, vigorously shaking and rinsing the dirt from the roots before enjoying each bite. With eye contact at such close proximity, it really feels as if you’re connecting with the wildlife. The quiet moments spent here were some of the most treasured of our entire trip.

7. Mokoros at Sunset

The thrill of an ongoing safari is so exciting, while moving from sighting to sighting to see Africa’s incredible wildlife and large game. After a few weeks of zooming through the bush, we thoroughly enjoyed slowing things down for a change. A mokoro experience in the Delta is unique, in that your expectations are different when compared to what you typically hope to see in a safari vehicle. At water level in a traditional dugout canoe, time almost stands still. The shallow waterways are calm and peaceful, as your poler helps you glide along to the soundtrack of surrounding birds and frogs. There are so many tiny details of the bush that are often missed on a game drive, so taking time to observe and appreciate them is almost restorative. That afternoon we had the pleasure of Disco’s company, the local poler who assisted in our mokoro experience, and handcrafted for us the most beautiful bouquet made from the Delta’s finest florals.

8. Leopard in Camp

If you’ve read our last blog, you’ll know all about Tladi the leopard, and his repeat appearances at Mombo Camp during our stay. I think it is safe to assume that you’ll have some up-close animal viewing on any safari excursion, but having Tladi in camp on multiple occasions was the closest we’ve ever been to a big cat in the wild! For those who haven’t read about our experience at Mombo, here are the cliff-notes: a curious male leopard, who called an empty camp his home during COVID lockdowns, met our safari vehicle as we pulled up to reception post-morning drive, as if he was greeting us from the main lobby. He casually strolled down the lodge entry, right passed our vehicle. He also made time to say goodbye our final morning, as he cruised through the dining room and out through the firepit in front of camp. Safari is all about Africa’s magnificent wildlife, and this was an incredible reminder of how special the wild truly is .

No two safari experiences are the same. And while we can’t promise you’ll have a leopard in camp during your next trip to Botswana, we can guarantee that you’ll experience the best of Africa and will leave the continent with treasured memories to last a lifetime.
