Keep reading for a helpful shopping guide and for an in-depth explanation of how we test luggage, but first, here's our favorite kids' luggage. Looking for a suitcase for yourself? Check out our favorite carry-on bags and the best luggage on Amazon .

Covered in popular Disney characters like Elsa and Anna, Mickey and Minnie Mouse and Grogu, American Tourister's hardside luggage is sure to be a hit with your kids. The suitcase, available in 16- and 18-inch options, is made with ABS plastic, which weighs in at less than five pounds and is lightweight and compact enough for your kids to roll on their own. The ABS material isn't as durable as other hardside materials, but it is lighter and typically less expensive. Our analysts appreciate the design details like a telescopic handle with a wide, curved pull and oversized zippers that are easier for small hands to grab. Inside, you'll find two separate compartments for packing — one that's fully enclosed with a zipper and another open compartment with cross straps to keep belongings secure. It may only have two wheels, but users say they're still easy for young kids to roll.

For just $45, this full-sized carry-on suitcase is designed with plenty of space to pack all of your kids' belongings. A singular large compartment inside is easy for kids to fill, and there's a mesh pocket for added storage; however, there are no cross straps to keep everything in place. In our Lab tests, softside luggage like this is less likely to scratch than hardside luggage, and it's easier to squeeze into tight spaces when traveling. There are seven fun prints and patterns to choose from, including dinosaurs, unicorns and donuts, and it even comes with a small stuffed animal to coordinate with the printed design on the luggage. Just two stationary wheels means this suitcase won't spin and can only be rolled when tilted, but reviewers say it's still easy for kids to roll and maneuver.

Pottery Barn Kids' Mackenzie spinner luggage is available in tons of colors and patterns, along with hardside options and two-piece sets, and you can have it embroidered for an additional fee. The ombre glitter style is a best-seller from the brand and performed well in Textiles Lab luggage evaluations. One analyst who tried this bag said it had excellent maneuverability and rolled smoothly, thanks the the 360-degree spinner wheels. It didn't show much wear in our abrasion tests, other than some minor glitter shed. There's plenty of space to pack your kids' things, even in this smaller version of the bag. Inside is a large open compartment and a zippered pocket, while the outside features another zipped pocket and two buckle straps to keep extra belongings secured.

Heys 2pc. Kids Luggage & Backpack Set

This absolutely adorable two-piece set from Heys comes with a small suitcase and matching backpack, designed to look like a ladybug, owl, unicorn or bumble bee. The backpack slides over the telescopic handle of the suitcase, making it easy to roll both around at the airport, although there are only two wheels, so it does need to be tilted to use. When you're done using it, the backpack tucks into the suitcase for more compact storage. In our evaluations, kids loved using Heys luggage, and online reviewers agree, with one user noting, "They are the best quality" and many sharing that their kids are more than happy to carry the bags themselves. When we tested other Heys hardside bags in the Lab, they received high ratings for ease of use and maneuverability but did scratch more easily than other bags.

Textiles Lab experts are fans of L.L.Bean's high quality products that "stand the test of time." For this particular style, the printed duffles are constructed with water-resistant polyester material, while the solids are made of water-resistant nylon; nylon bags tend to perform better in our Lab tests for abrasion and durability. Our Lab analysts appreciate the thoughtful design elements, like a padded removable shoulder strap, wrapped carrying handles and covered zipper for the main compartment. You also have the option to personalize the bag with a monogram for an additional fee. It is hand wash only and needs to be hung to dry, so it will require some extra care.

With over 2,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, this five-piece set from Travelers Club is a total steal at less than $70. Included in the set are a carry-on bag, backpack, lunch box, neck pillow and matching luggage tag. We're impressed that, although it's so affordable, the carry-on bag is designed with four spinner wheels and made of an ABS and polycarbonate composite , which typically performs better in our Lab tests for durability than ABS on its own. Online reviewers rave about the "perfect" luggage set and say that all of the pieces are high quality and easy to pack and carry. It is important to note that the neck pillow is filled with microbeads that are recognized as a choking hazard, so be sure to keep a close eye on your kids while they use the pillow.

Crate&kids Big Cats Medium Kids Backpack

If you don't yet trust your child to roll a suitcase through the airport or you're just looking for something simple and versatile for them to pack, Crate&kids' medium kids' backpack is a great luggage option. When we tested this backpack in the Lab, we were impressed by how well the material held up to our abrasion testing, with minimal changes in appearance. Our analysts appreciated the easy-to-use zippers, comfy padded back and straps and many organizational pockets . One of our testers shared that she wishes there were a strap across the chest to help balance the weight of the backpack but says the material is easy to wipe clean. The backpack comes in 17 prints and patterns that can all be customized with embroidery for an additional fee, and there are even water bottles and and lunchboxes to match.

Ride-on luggage has taken the world, including your local airport, by storm. This ride-on suitcase from Jet Kids stands out because it converts an airplane seat into a bed. The top of the suitcase lifts up, and a bed mat is exposed that connects to the suitcase and attaches to the seat's arm rests. It extends the length of the seat and allows for your little one to fully recline. Our tester and online reviewers have had issues keeping the bed secure, but they appreciate the extra leg room it provides. When the suitcase is closed, kids can sit on top and scoot themselves or be pulled with the attached strap. It's important to note that not every airline allows the bed attachment to be used in flight, but the bag is small enough to easily fit underneath an airplane seat.

If you're willing to splurge a little on your kids' luggage, a suitcase from State Bags is worth the investment. Our Textiles Lab analysts love the high quality construction, stylish design and the brand's mission — the brand uses part of its profits to donate fully-packed backpacks to kids who are in need and also funds efforts to help underserved communities. State Bags' mini suitcase is designed for younger kids, while the brand's full-size version is a bit larger and a better fit for older kids. This mini style features 360-degree spinner wheels, an easy-open front pocket and two spacious interior compartments. Some online reviewers mention their kids having difficult lowering the telescopic handle on their own, but say it collapses easily with some adult help. The brand also offers matching travel accessories l ike water bottle slings, toiletry bags and fanny packs.

How we choose the best kids' luggage

linebreak

Experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab evaluate luggage in the Lab using standardized equipment and testing methods. We also set up an obstacle course for users to test out the luggage and provide their input and share luggage with consumer testers who give real-user feedback about their experiences. Although we haven't formally tested every pick for kids' luggage, we have tested other luggage from the brands and have gathered recommendations from product analysts within the Good Housekeeping Institute. Here are some of the characteristics we take into consideration when we are evaluating luggage:

✔️ Size and weight : Online specs for luggage aren't always accurate, so we ensure they're correct by weighing and measuring each piece of luggage in our Textiles Lab. If we're evaluating carry-on luggage, we place the luggage into a 22 x 14 x 9-inch area to check if it meets TSA specifications.

g

✔️ Packing capabilities : Our analysts pack each suitcase with a standard load of items including clothing, shoes and toiletries to evaluate how much we can fit inside and how well features like zippers and other fasteners work (shown here). We also consider other elements like telescopic handles, locks and wheels. After packing the bags, analysts and testers roll the bags over different surfaces such as wood, tile and carpet and also lift the bags up onto counter to test carrying handles.

✔️ Drop durability : Luggage is placed in our drop tester, which releases the luggage from a 3-foot height, dropping it onto a surface below. This process allows us to analyze imperfections like scuffing or dents that occur as a result.

✔️ Abrasion resistance: Softside luggage goes through abrasion testing, where we cut a swatch of material from the luggage and then place it in our abrasion tester, which rubs the fabric 15,000 times with an abrasive metal to simulate prolonged use. We rate the luggage based on how well it resists wear and look for pilling, holes and scuffs.

✔️ Scratch resistance : Hardside luggage is tested for scratch resistance. We drag a metal wire over the luggage and then evaluate any damage that's left behind.

✔️ Water resistance : Our analysts place blotting paper inside of the luggage and then pour water over the zippers, analyzing how much water seeps through the zipper to the inside.

✔️ Consumer tests: Lastly, we work with consumer testers who try out the luggage and provide us with real-user feedback. We set up an obstacle course in the Lab and give testers the opportunity to run through the course, rating the luggage for properties like ease of use, wheel and handle performance, maneuverability and sturdiness. The obstacle course involves rolling the bags over different types of flooring, moving it around twists and turns and lifting it over curbs and counters and more. We share suitcases with testers who are able to take the bags on their own trips and provide us with feedback about their experiences, as well.

What to look for when shopping for the best kids' luggage

line image

Choosing a kids' suitcase is a bit different than choosing a suitcase for yourself. Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for kids' luggage:

✔️ Wheels : Our Textiles Lab pros recommend suitcases with four 360-degree spinner wheels, which consistently receive high ratings for being easy to maneuver in our tests. They'll make it easier for kids to push or pull around their luggage on their own. Another popular option for kids is a two-wheel suitcase with a built-in stand that keeps the suitcase upright when it's not in use.

✔️ H andles : Review product descriptions and images online for information about telescopic and carrying handles to ensure they're designed for small hands. Opt for design features like extra padding and grips or rounded handles that are easy to grab and comfortable.

✔️ Compartments: Consider the level of organization that you and your kids could benefit from — is it easier for them to fill one large compartment with their favorite clothes and toys, or would you prefer to pack their belongings into two separate compartments? Also look for interior and exterior zippered pockets and extras like toiletry bags or mesh pouches.

✔️ Size: Kids' luggage should be lightweight and small enough for little ones to carry, as well as meet airlin e requirements for size. Many kids' bags weigh around five pounds or less and have dimensions comparable to or smaller than a standard carry-on bag.

Investing in the best kids' luggage won’t make traveling with children as easy as traveling without them, but it will make the whole endeavor a lot less chaotic. After all, giving them a suitcase of their own can make any parent’s load lighter, literally. The trick is to find a piece of luggage that a kid loves so much, they’ll be delighted to carry it themselves—at least for a while. Our favorite brands not only appeal to a younger aesthetic sensibility, they’re also designed to stay organized and survive even the roughest of toddlers. Ahead, discover the best luggage for children that will house everything from clothes and shoes to beloved stuffed animals (and several dozen packs of animal crackers).

This article is part of Condé Nast Traveler’s first-ever Luggage Week , for which dozens of suitcases, backpacks, and weekender bags were road-tested by our editors.

Which are the best kids' luggage brands?

While there’s no definitive best brand for kids' luggage, the most popular among our informal poll of travel writers with kids is Away . With its reasonable price point, reputation for quality, and numerous colors, its suitcases can appeal to a range of kids, from preschoolers all the way up to college-age.

What is the best kids' luggage for toddlers?

Nearly all toddlers will get tired of pushing their own suitcase after just a few minutes, which is why we love the Trunki Ride On for the littlest traveling tots. When they’re too exhausted to walk, you can plop them right on top and pull them, which means this bag also doubles as a quasi-stroller.

What are the advantages of having kids' luggage?

There are numerous advantages to your kids carrying their own pieces. First, it helps keep the whole family organized, because all of your children’s items are contained in a separate bag. Second, if you’re worried about weight restrictions on checked luggage, it helps to spread out all the clothes and travel gear among more pieces. And, finally, it’s an excellent way to teach a bit of responsibility—just make sure your six-year-old doesn’t accidentally leave hers in the airport bathroom.

One way to cut down on complaints from kids carrying their own suitcase? Make it as light as possible. That’s why we’re huge fans of Aussie brand July’s Carry-On Light, which at just 3.9 pounds, is the lightest double-wheel suitcase in the world. Plus, it comes in kid-friendly colors like bright green cucumber and a super fun neon mandarin, all of which can be monogrammed to keep everyone’s bags with their proper owner. And inside, the 32-liter capacity suitcase has two zippered compartments to ensure that everything stays organized.

Travel writer and author Christine Chitnis swears by Away’s larger-sized carry-on when traveling with her three kids, ages 5–12. “It’s a great size for kids, and so smooth, lightweight, and easy for them to roll around themselves,” she says. On a recent cruise to Greenland with Hurtigruten Expeditions , Chitnis’ 12 year-old son Vijay was able to fit all of his cold-weather active clothing inside it, and for trips that require less bulky items, her kids can “easily get away with two weeks’ worth of clothes, plus a few books, toys, and shoes in the bag,” she says.

travel kid luggage

The Trunki might not fit as much as some of our other favorite hard-sided suitcases, but it lands a place on this list for its major selling point: kids can actually ride it. Frequent traveler Paige Baker tested it out on a recent trip to Jackson Hole and loved that it was easy to roll even when her toddler was sitting on it. And while the interior space isn’t huge, “it fits a week's worth of toddler clothes or just all of the fun necessities to keep them entertained,” she says. And, with a variety of styles to choose, from a unicorn to a bumblebee, there’s probably one to match your kid’s personal style. For a similar model for older kids, look into the Micro Scooter Luggage Junior , a favorite of contributor Nila Do Simon that can fit a weekend’s worth of clothes and allows kids to scoot from place to place.

travel kid luggage

Writer Jamie Smith swears by this peppy children's suitcase for her eight-year-old son, Adam. So far, he’s used it for a nine-state road trip and international trips to Mexico and the Dominican Republic; Smith loves that it can easily hold 10 days’ worth of clothing. It also wins points for its durability: “My son is rough on everything,” she says. “He’s banged this suitcase up and down steps and has written on it for every trip. It still looks brand new!” Plus, with its bright neon color, it’s nearly impossible to lose track of it.

travel kid luggage

No, your child doesn’t need a Rimowa suitcase, but for the chicest young travelers out there, it’s hard to find something cooler than this one. Rimowa’s Essential Lite line is ideal for kids because, like the name implies, the pieces are incredibly lightweight. The smallest model, Cabin U, clocks in at just 4.4 pounds, but can easily accommodate over a week’s worth of clothes and accessories for any well-traveled tot. And with a lifetime guarantee, your kids can be as rough with it as they want: It’ll keep on ticking.

travel kid luggage

One of the best parts about kids’ luggage is how many more fun colors and prints there are to choose from, and no one embodies this more than State. My seven-year-old daughter Aveline adores State’s Logan kids suitcase, which comes in styles ranging from rainbow tie-dye to camo. On a recent trip to Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island, she was easily able to roll it herself the whole walk from the ferry to the hotel, and it also fit the generous amount of stuffed animals she insisted on bringing with her. As her mom, I appreciate the separate mesh pocket specifically for dirty clothes.

travel kid luggage

L.L.Bean and rugged are essentially synonymous, so it’s no surprise that its duffel is a favorite among parent travel writers. But, regular duffels can get quite cumbersome, which is why the brand’s rolling version is our favorite out of the entire collection. It’s also been recently redesigned with a studier base, so it now stands on its own without tipping over. Other notable features include a water-resistant coating, cinch straps, and padded grab handles. Finally, with over half a dozen colors available, you can get a different hue for every member of the family.

travel kid luggage

A wheeled carry-on that actually fits under your seat? It’s no longer a myth, thanks to Delsey’s square-designed Chatelet Air Underseater. Baker also tested this model with her child and loved its understated color (that won’t show toddler messes very easily). While its smaller size means you’re not lugging this one for a multi-week trip, Baker says it can handily fit enough for a weekend stay. It was also “very ergonomically friendly in that it wasn't too large, long, or bulky when pulling by the handle,” she says.

travel kid luggage

Don't overlook the advantages of smaller bags when traveling with kids. Writer Andrea Hoag loves these colorful numbers by Patagonia, which her kids have used for seven years and counting. “These packs have grown with my kids from their pre-teen years to college,” Hoag says. “For being small, they carry an impressive amount of stuff, like a small Moleskine sketchbook, sunscreen , and hand sanitizer.” And, no surprise considering Patagonia’s reputation for durability, they’ve held up well over the years. “My kids are hard on their stuff and these packs survived years of teenagers tossing them under airline seats, using them as makeshift pillows during marathon road trips, and once, even being used as an improvised bungee cord, cinched tight to shore up a backpack whose zipper broke during the last leg of a transatlantic flight,” she adds.

travel kid luggage

Writer Alyssa Shelasky is an evangelist for this colorful rolling bag for her two kids, estimating she’s brought it on 20 trips so far, from staycations at The William Vale to The Shore Club Turks & Caicos for a yearly Caribbean trip. Some of her favorite features: how lightweight and easy to wipe down it is, and its budget-friendly price tag. And she’s never worried about scuffs: “Like all things from reliable Lands’ End, it holds up beautifully,” she says. Plus, its design encourages kids to get more involved in the packing process: “There are lots of zips and pockets which kids love (a great mom hack is to have them pack themselves while you focus on your own closet),” she says.

travel kid luggage

Perhaps the most ubiquitous travel backpack, judging by both an informal poll of travel writers and, well, just looking around at the airport, is this durable version from Pottery Barn. The Mackenzie comes in a staggering number of prints, from lavender flowers to monster trucks to glow-in-the-dark dino bones, and is also available in five different sizes, which means there’s a model for every aged kid. When my daughter was younger, she loved toting around the mini size as her carry-on —it was just big enough for a few picture books and snacks, but what more do you need as a two-year-old? Parents will also sing the praises of the many straps and gear loops, which help to organize things like sweaters or markers.

travel kid luggage

Traveler contributor Jordi Lippe-McGraw is also the creator of this new bag line, which launches this September with a range of products that are perfect for parents and kids (hence, the ‘Pak’). The Companion, the line’s smaller-sized backpack, is the ideal size for kids, but can also be attached to the larger Origin Pak when little travelers need a break from carrying their gear. We also love the luxury touches, like the premium nylon exterior and leather detailing at the high touch points.

travel kid luggage

Contributor Juliana Shalcross' tween daughter uses this backpack for double-duty: It’s not only her school bag, but her favorite travel carry-on as well. “It’s a great backpack for tweens and teens as it’s a simple style with plenty of little compartments to stash tech accessories, make-up, and gadgets,” she says. It’s also very durable: The fabric is a recycled polyester that’s also waterproof. And while there are larger backpacks on the market, Shallcross’ daughter makes use of the exterior bungee cords to stash things like a sweatshirt, rather than jamming it inside.

travel kid luggage

On a recent trip to Eden Roc Cap Cana , my daughter insisted on bringing this backpack with her, citing its bright color that would match the sun on the Caribbean island. I can’t blame her—one of Stoney Clover’s hallmarks is its wide range of rainbow hues, all in a sturdy nylon fabric. But if you’re familiar with the brand, you’ll know its other draw is how customizable its products are , thanks to a dizzying array of patches that can be sewn to the front. Pro tip: There are a ton of destination patches, which can be fun to collect on your child’s travels.

travel kid luggage

Another strong entry in the customizable camp is Becco, which makes duffles , backpacks , belt bags , and more that can all be personalized with patches. The key difference here is that Becco’s bags are fashioned out of a patent-pending hook and loop material (like a velcro), which means patches can be swapped out for every trip (or every day, if your kid so chooses). Currently, my daughter has a tropical theme going for her backpack to get ready for our trip to Four Seasons Resort Nevis , but she also loves spelling out her name with letter patches. Apart from its interactivity, I also love the bag’s padded straps and back, which makes lugging it, even when heavy, quite comfortable.

What sets it apart: When it comes to kids luggage, many parents default to the Pottery Barn Kids Mackenzie Luggage – and with good reason. This rolling suitcase is available in hard- or soft-sided form, and it comes with the option for monogramming. It is offered in a variety of fun prints, many of which have a coordinating backpack and/or lunch box that can be purchased separately.

The small suitcase is a standard-sized carry-on bag that's perfect for (and can grow with) older kids. The sizing of the large suitcase varies slightly, but it's a great checked bag option. For maximum organization, we recommend one of the soft-sided bags, which feature both exterior and interior pockets. In comparison, the hard-sided bag has one internal zippered compartment.

Parents appreciate: Aside from the option to personalize this bag, parents appreciate the bag's quality and size options.

Price: $199.50 or less

Good things often come in small packages, and when it comes to kids’ luggage that sizes down the dimensions while ramping up the fun, this is certainly true. Keep your little ones on board and amused with their very own luggage for their next vacation, camping trip, or sleepover.

Before you go ahead and buy a piece of luggage for your kids, there are a few things you should consider when making your decision.

Size and Weight

Kids carry on

Children are smaller than most adults and therefore need cases and luggage with more compact dimensions for them to be usable. The average size of a carry-on case is about right for both younger and older children, but many cases designed exclusively for kids are just a little bit smaller. That said, there should be enough room in the case to house some clothes, toys, electronics, and any other essentials you need to take with you.

When it comes to the weight of your kid’s case, lighter is definitely better . A 4-year-old will struggle to drag an overweight hardside case behind them, no matter how cute and kid-friendly it may appear at first glance.

Hot Tip: Too heavy and you will be forced to carry it around for them, which sort of defeats the purpose, so look for cases that weigh no more than 7.5 pounds ideally.

Material and Durability

Kids carry on material

Most kids’ cases are either made from tough and durable ABS or polycarbonate hardshell components, or some type of wipeable vinyl or other soft, water-resistant materials.

Traditional softside cases and backpacks are often available in a wide range of cute designs featuring cuddly characters and bold designs, but these will not usually be as durable as their hard-sided counterparts. That said, softside luggage will be lighter , even when full, making them easier for little hands to pull or carry.

Hardside suitcases and backpacks , on the other hand, are a supercute child-size addition to full-size adult cases, and they will usually be more hard-wearing and durable. They may last you longer, but they may also be heavier, so consider the size and strength of your child before investing.

Kids carry on wheels

Unlike adults who can carefully navigate the terrain around them, most kids are happy to drag and pull their cases over anything that gets in their way. With this in mind, most child-sized suitcases come complete with spinner- or in-line skate-style wheels that are built to last.

They may be a little bit noisier than the sophisticated wheels found on high-end, full-size cases, but you may be thankful for chunky plastic coverings when your child tries to roll the case over your own feet, and those of everyone else waiting in line with you.

Compartments and Organization

Kids carry on compartments

Most children’s cases do not have too many fussy compartments and pockets to worry about, but you should consider one that can separate certain items. Suitcases, for example, usually come with a zippered divider that you can use to keep clean and dirty clothing apart from each other, while some also offer a mesh pocket that is useful for toys, books, and other essentials.

Kids carry on pockets

With backpacks and carry bags, a front pocket makes light work of snacks and toys, while mesh pockets on the side will keep drink bottles and cups close at hand.

Kid-Friendly

Kids carry on designs

Children are visual buyers and love anything that is covered in their favorite characters. Bright, colorful, and full of fun, Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Star Wars, Paw Patrol, and many other branded cases are designed particularly to appeal to younger children. There are also plenty of animals, sports, or hobby-themed bags and cases that kids of all ages will love, too.

If you want to ramp up the fun, ride-ons offer a fun alternative to strollers for toddlers on longer journeys and can be pulled along by parents when you need to keep them close by.

Bottom Line: Give your kids the independence of packing their own bags, but keep it fun by letting them use luggage made just for children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which brand is best for kids' luggage.

There are a few brands out there who make fun and versatile luggage for kids. Some of the best are:

  • American Tourister
  • Stephen Joseph

Is hardside or softside luggage better for kids?

Hardside luggage tends to be more hardwearing and durable when it comes to kids’ luggage but softside alternatives are usually lighter. Hardside cases are also easier to clean as you can wipe them down.

Can a child have a carry-on bag?

Airlines usually allow a child to bring their own carry-on provided they are a ticketed passenger with their own seat.

What is the best carry-on luggage for children?

Bright, colorful, and full of fun, Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Paw Patrol, and many other branded cases are designed particularly to appeal to younger children. There are also plenty of animals, sport, or hobby-themed bags and cases that kids of all ages will love, too.

One of our favorites is the American Tourister Disney Hardside Luggage with Spinner Wheels.

Are there wheels on a child's carry-on?

Unlike adults who can carefully navigate the terrain around them, most kids are happy to drag and pull their cases over anything that gets in their way. With this in mind, most child-sized suitcases come complete with spinner or in-line skate-style wheels that are built to last.

Now, years later, with 2 toddlers, I still have a Deuter travel backpack and we travel everywhere with it. I think the only times I didn’t travel with it was when I was pregnant and it could fit on my belly. I love the flexibility a travel backpack provides: our hands are always free so it’s easier to carry a stroller and/or the kids, or simply to hold their hands. Plus, it’s more suitable than a suitcase on cobblestone streets or dirt streets. We will be traveling the world with our 2 little kids and our 2 Deuter backpacks.” – Emilie Brillon

The next time we were planning a trip overseas, I did some research on the best travel backpacks that could fit our needs AND fit in the plane’s overhead bin. Best Luggage for Kids Who Travel

Woman with children and luggage in hall of airport Düsseldorf

Having, or not having, the right luggage on a family trip can make a significant difference, especially if your family travels frequently, or on itineraries that involve multiple transitions. While you can just stuff all the kids' stuff in any old bag, you may regret that choice as you transform into a human pack mule going through the airport, city streets, etc.

Family luggage selections are truly right up there in the pre-trip planning priorities along with mapping routes, figuring out the itinerary and researching destinations.

travel kid luggage

Whether a child is a preschooler or in elementary school, their luggage can act as a touchstone to home and help them remain relatively self-sufficient. The size and style of child's bag should be dictated by their age, size, what they want and need to bring with them, how they can manage the bag and by how the adults who are traveling with them can add the child's bag to their own when needed. (Learn more about the best travel gear for kids .)

Here's a rundown on children's luggage from Karen Jacobs, a clinical professor of occupational therapy at Boston University, and other experts in the field. Jacobs takes each of her grandkids on an international trip when they turn 10, and is the moving force behind National School Backpack Awareness Day.

Luggage for Preschoolers

Look for compact wheeled bags and backpacks: "The most important thing for preschoolers is to have a few items to keep them busy on the plane in a tiny wheeled bag," says Jacobs. (Back in the day, Mommy Points chose a Trendy Kid Travel Buddies wheelie and backpack for her own toddler.)

Trendy Kid Travel Buddy

Almost by definition, preschoolers' bags and backpacks are small enough to go under an airplane seat, which makes easy (and frequent) access a given, says Jacobs.

Because it's highly unlikely that the bag will be checked and equally likely that it will endure spills and stains, she usually assumes that a child's bag won't last forever. Viewing a preschooler's bag as semi-disposable also frees you to buy one that fits the child perfectly, with no expectation of having them grow into it. "For little kids, it's not an investment piece; it's their little bit of the world with them," says Jacobs. That said, consider making the purchase with a credit card with good purchase protections in case it really doesn't hold up like you hoped.

Encourage children to become familiar with their bags before the trip, adds Sandra Schefkind, who heads the pediatric practice of the American Occupational Therapy Association. "It's not just the mechanics of moving it but making sure we don't lose it. Will there be an attachment to it so you can identify it and keep track of it?" she says. Easily identified bags can give a small child a reference point throughout the trip.

One flexible option with a distinct look is the Heys brand Travel Tots line. Scaled for preschoolers, the hard-shell bags come in coordinated, animal-themed sets of a backpack and a roller. The handle on the rolling bag extends sufficiently for an adult to pull it. The wheels are designed to keep the bag off the ground even if it is being pulled by a very small child, says designer Jo Cho.

travel kid luggage

"It can become frustrating for kids if the zipper is hard to hold and zip. We design with larger curved zippers that just feel right when kids are opening and closing their luggage," she says.

Get familiar with the bag well before departure, says Jacobs. "Packing is part of the anticipation," she says. Let children choose their en route activities as well as a change of clothes and, she recommends, a change of shoes so a bad spill doesn't force the child to traipse in wet shoes and socks.

The bulk of the child's clothes should either go in a checked bag or in the accompanying adult's carry-on, advises Jacobs.

Jacobs thinks that both rollers and backpacks are suitable for preschoolers ... as long as parents realize that they, not the kid, will also be managing the bag. That said, a preschooler is usually capable of taking charge of their bag for a portion of the trip , just likely not when they are tired or over long distances.

Always experiment with children's luggage before buying it, says Jacobs. First, she advises, test the length of the handle to the child's height and comfort. Then, experiment with how the accompanying adult will be able to add the bag to his or her load. Finally, experiment with the accompanying adult's ability to handle the child and all the bags.

Trunki offers a novelty rectangular suitcase that doubles as a preschooler riding toy. While not commenting on any specific product, Jacobs says that it's important to clarify how you'd safely use a bag that a child can ride on: Would a toddler insist on trying to ride it in crowded or small spaces? If items of this sort might provide an enjoyable play option at a hotel room or grandma's house, consider how you will manage expectations en route.

Luggage for Elementary School-Aged Kids

Search for multipurpose bags with plenty of storage space: Children in first- through fifth-grade are likely to be entranced by collecting souvenirs and treasures along the way, says Jacobs. Her recent weeklong trip to Paris with 10-year-old granddaughter Sophie involved hunting for the perfect light-up Eiffel Tower souvenirs.

Schefkind, the mother of three grown children, recommends nesting bags, such as a small backpack that fits into an under-seat roll-on, to offer elementary school kids several options. Nesting bags can also help organize — for instance, a change of clothes and basic toiletries can be tucked into a small lightweight backpack that occupies a third of a roll-on, she says.

family with luggage airport

Magi Raible, president of LifeGearDesign, and a longtime luggage designer, drew from real-life packing and lugging hassles to create extra-sturdy bags and backpacks that are also extra-light. The company's brand, LiteGear features nesting bags and packs that offer plenty of mix-and-max options for quickly rearranging toys, snacks and a change of clothes among parents' and children's luggage.

LifeGear's Hybrid Rolling Tote is designed to stow under an airplane seat, which makes it a good in-between size for elementary school-aged children who are too old for a cute luggage beloved by preschoolers, but not old enough for a carry-on designed for even a small adult. Similar under-seat totes are available through LL Bean.

Convertible backpacks that let elementary school-aged kids carry a bag on their backs or pull it behind them are another great option, say occupational therapists. LiteGear's Rolling Mobile Pro has a telescoping handle that snaps out of sight when the bag is used as a backpack. The pack also offers easy-access, padded front pockets for electronics.

travel kid luggage

Kids' bags take a lot of abuse: crumbs, uncapped markers, damp clothes. But bags that can keep up with a child for the duration of a trip more than earn their keep — even if they get used up pretty quickly in the process.

As your traveling child ages out of elementary school, a bag like the Away Kid's Carry-On, a slightly scaled down version of the adult model , may become worth the investment for frequently flying families.

Pre-Trip Luggage Tips

Allow plenty of time for shopping and fitting children's gear, advises Jacobs. Preferably, shop at physical stores so you can test the fit on the spot. If you buy online, be prepared to fit the gear and potentially return items that are the wrong size, fit or proportion for your child.

Evaluate the total amount of stuff that you have to bring for each child and how it will be divided up between carry-ons and checked bags. Don't give in to the temptation to use the child's carry-on as an overflow for his or her checked bag. The carry-on, say occupational therapists, should be reserved for the child's emergency change of clothes, toys, snacks and treats.

  • Consider what kids' activities and snacks you want to dole out throughout the trip and save space for those in your own carry-on to preserve the surprises.
  • Always keep the child's medications in the bag of the accompanying adult.
  • Bring a bungee cord so you can easily add a small child's carry-on to your own. This will make it easier and safer to bundle the child's bag with yours for quick boarding and exiting.
  • Leave room or expect to make room in the child's bags for souvenirs. Try to anticipate whether the child is likely to want to buy and bring a bulky souvenir in his or her carry-on (we're looking at you, Mickey).
  • Check to see if your child's electronics can easily be managed within the confines of his or her bag. If not, expect to carry the devices through security in your own bag and manage them accordingly.
  • If you can, create a common visual among all your family's luggage, especially among all your carry-ons. A common tag, stencil or color enables children to quickly identify your bags at security checkpoints and gives your child a bit of a reference point in the midst of large, chaotic spaces, say therapists.

The American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc. offers tips for choosing and adjusting children's backpacks .

Bottom Line

Your child should be trusted with his or her own carry-on as soon as realistically possible . Buy something your kid can manage independently, but be ready to step in and carry it when your little one peters out.

I'm a Notorious Overpacker, but These 12 Space-saving Hacks Help Me Fit Everything in a Carry-on

These travel organizers changed the way I pack — and they start at $9.

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation. Learn more .

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

Life is full of challenges that call for us to rise to the occasion, but for me there’s nothing quite like that “ Can I fit all of this in a carry-on bag ? ” conundrum to really get my problem solving skills going. Over the years, I’ve managed to pack a large amount of items into a carry-on bag, and it’s a badge of honor I wear proudly.

To be fair, achieving this is much easier when packing for warmer climates that call for less bulky clothing, but there are still ways to bring along your favorite cardigan and snow boots. On a recent ski trip to Vail, Colorado, for example, I wore my trusty snow boots and ski jacket on the plane instead of packing them to free up space in my luggage. Next up, I’m currently packing for a two-week trip through Italy, finally fulfilling my bucket list dream to visit  T+L reader favorite The St. Regis Venice , have a whirlwind culinary adventure through  Emilia Romagna in  Modena   and Bologna’s  Leading Hotels of the World Grand Hotel Majestic già Baglioni , and end it all with a grand finale at  IHG’s Grand Hotel Des Arts in Verona  and  R Collection’s Grand Hotel Victoria  on Lake Como. And yes, I’ll have a carry on through it all. Naturally, hotels with the word grand in them, require fab outfits to match the mood. This is where good packing cubes can make magic happen, and I’m proud to share that I’ve already fit at least eight of my favorite dresses into one cube for my Italian jaunt.

Are you team fold or roll? Do you tuck your socks into shoes and sit on your suitcase, praying that the zipper will be merciful? If so, it may be time to consider a different approach. With effective products (and a strong will), you too can forget the stress of checking a bag and wondering if it will arrive in time. From space-saving packing cubes to a compression garment bag , these are some of the products I rely on to remain #TeamCarryOn.

Packing Cubes

One of my biggest travel regrets is that I didn’t give into packing cubes sooner. The hours spent debating whether to fold or roll, leave a favorite item behind, or simply be able to close my luggage due to space has cost me hours of time. For me, these Calpak 5-piece Packing Cube Set packing cubes have truly delivered the solution with a set of four packing cubes and a water-resistant pouch for storage. The top portion is a breathable mesh that makes it easy to identify what you’ve packed without having to open anything to sort through it, and you can even label each cube based on attire. Alternatively, this Bagail 8-piece Packing Cube Set over at Amazon has even more cubes at just a fraction of the cost. It has more than 22,000 five-star ratings and includes a laundry pouch and shoe bag. If you’re traveling with little ones, State Bags makes kid-friendly packing cubes with handles .

Hanging Toiletry Bag

This squishable, waterproof Calpak Toiletry Bag has a durable, lightweight polyester material that makes it easy to lay items on top of while packing. At the same time, it’s still large enough to store makeup products, with a few pockets to stash those random beauty and toiletry items that you may be scrambling to find a spot for in the final hour of packing. As a bonus, it comes in a range of bright colors like bubblegum that are just plain fun and an instant mood booster. Amazon offers a durable alternative with this Nishel Toiletry Bag for $19. Transparent pockets and a soft exterior that allows it to lie flat are just a few of its perks.

Roll Packing Organizer

The Osprey Ultralight Roll Packing Organizer , another hanging kit, is a helpful accessory if you’re looking to keep anything from your toiletries to a first-aid kit in one location. It’s rollable too, allowing for more space in your carry-on bag. The organizational pockets are large enough to store random knick knacks during last-minute packing, and a hanging clip loop makes it easy to find a home for it wherever you’re checking in during travel.

Foldable Tote Bag

What’s the perfect complement to carry-on luggage? A spacious purse for all of the items that didn’t fit in your larger bag — but one that you can easily pack away in your luggage when not in use. My State Graham Shopper accomplishes all of this and more, with a lightweight, smooth recycled fabric that helps me breeze through airports without being weighed down. Best of all, it’s so large that I’m able to fit my laptop, makeup bag, and even a packing cube with clothing. The State bag is currently on sale, but if you’re looking for an even more affordable option, Amazon has got you covered with this ETidy Foldable Tote Bag , currently on sale for $18. The 2-in-1 design allows the larger tote to be folded into a smaller bag, making it convenient to carry and save space.

Tech Organizer Case

Tangled cords and bulky chargers, be gone. My go-to, the sleek The Tech Case by Away , offers compartments to efficiently store your chargers in two different sizes. I can easily store travel adapters, earbuds, and random chargers in its sectioned compartments. On Amazon, FYY makes a handy, water-resistant tech organizer case that comes in a number of colors for $10.

Travel Shoe Bag

Say goodbye to trying to contort your shoes between clothes with this waterproof shoe organizer from Hezelf. The bag can carry up to three pairs of shoes and includes a handle to carry it. I also opt to pack foldable shoes whenever I can, with my favorite slides and foldable flats from Vivaia , or, check out these similar foldable shoes from Amazon for $22.

Pill Organizer

I used to make the mistake of choosing which vitamins to pack based on the size of the bottle. It was a simple fix problem, and this 3-pack pill organizer from Meacolia was the answer. A double lock ensures that pills don’t fall out in your bag, and two of its eight compartments can house larger pills. It’s currently on sale on Amazon for $9, so grab it while you can.

Lightweight Travel Neck Pillow

A travel pillow can make long flights much more comfortable, but the right one can also save real estate in a bag. To maximize carry-on space, take a look at this genius, stuffable travel pillow that can hold up to an extra 3 days’ worth of clothes (without checking a bag). Or, this versatile, lightweight neck pillow from Trtl is much less bulky than your average option but still provides support by keeping your neck upright while padding it. The super soft fleece material and cushioning provide ultimate comfort, and it can be attached to your luggage. Plus, it’s machine washable, making it easy to clean between trips, too.

Wrinkle-free Compression Travel Garment Bag

I avoid having to make the call to reception for an iron with this wrinkle-free compression garment bag from Eagle Creek. Currently on sale on Amazon for $30, this clothes organizer can hold up to 12 items with compression wings to keep everything tightly secured. Packing folders allow you to lay ironed clothing in stacks, preventing wrinkles during transit.

Leakproof Toiletry Bottles

Though travel-size toiletry holders are not exactly new, this set from Dot&Dot is a favorite because of its leakproof build. The squeezable silicone also makes my favorite conditioners and lotions easy to get out. The 3-ounce silicon bottles are BPA-free and easy to clean with a wide mouth opening. A range of colors help differentiate between liquids.

Collapsible Travel To-go Cup

If you never leave home without your refillable cup, consider this collapsible option from Stojo that even comes with a straw. For travelers on the go, shrinking the cup to just two inches can save space in your bag for other items. Separable parts include a heat sleeve, lid, collar, tab, straw, and cup. Best of all, it's made from platinum food-grade silicone, meaning no BPAs or lead.

Laundry Detergent Sheets

Part of what makes believing in the power of carry-on packing only for longer trips difficult is the challenge of having clean clothes. Fortunately, these detergent sheets from Kind Laundry will allow you to revisit outfits instead of packing more, as well as avoid steep hotel dry cleaning fees. Free of parabens and harsh chemicals, the plant-powered sheets are easy to tuck into carry-ons and stay fresh while traveling.

It’s My Work-Diapers Backpack-Tote

Portrait of Liza Corsillo

Most diaper bags are just tote bags or backpacks made of waterproof materials, with extra pockets to hold bottles, pacifiers, and baby snacks. (Some of the more elaborate ones have insulated storage and removable changing pads.) They are often bulky, and, in my experience, life as a parent is easier without one. I prefer a more streamlined multipurpose bag that I can use for work or travel or just everyday errand-running, in addition to baby outings. And the best one I’ve found so far is the surprisingly spacious and nice-looking LeSportsac Double Trouble backpack.

LeSportSac Double Trouble Backpack

My ideal diaper bag is lightweight and easy to carry, wipes clean and doesn’t show stains, looks good with everything I might wear, and is just as handy for carrying a laptop, water bottle , or wallet as it is for carrying baby stuff. The Double Trouble checks all of these boxes — plus, it can be used as a backpack or a tote. It has two tall pockets on the sides that work just as well for an adult water bottle as they do for a baby bottle. Inside, there are four elastic-trimmed mesh pockets that I use for everything from a computer charger to extra tampons and infant Motrin. There’s also a sneaky outer zipper pocket on the back and two smaller pockets (one zip, one not) on the front.

travel kid luggage

Despite its French-sounding name, LeSportsac is an American company that was founded in 1974, was taken over (and given new life) by the son of the original founders in the early 1990s, and is now in the middle of another revival along with other popular brands of the ’90s and 2000s. This resurgence and the backpack’s trapezoidal shape make it feel subtly trendy — even Prada -adjacent — especially in the all-black nylon that I have (though it also comes in an ever-changing array of bright colors and playful prints). It has a ’90s mini-backpack vibe without being actually mini or overtly vintage-looking. I first became familiar with the brand in college when I worked part-time in a kids’-clothing store that carried some of the Hello Kitty and Tokidoki collaboration bags . Then, last year, LeSportsac sent me a few items to try in celebration of its upcoming 50th anniversary, and the Double Trouble was the sleeper hit.

Before the Double Trouble became my “diaper bag” of choice, I tried three other contenders: a leopard-print Colugo diaper tote , an all-black Caraa baby bag , and a Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole backpack , also in all black. All three are well-designed bags with practical details like removable looped straps for hanging on a stroller and insulated pockets for snacks or milk, and all three had great potential. But, ultimately, none of them fit my criteria for everyday (or even occasional) non-baby-related use and ended up in the back of my closet.

I put the Patagonia backpack — which is also popular among artists and art handlers — on my baby registry , thinking it would work well style-wise for both me and my husband. It’s lightweight and packable and can be hosed off in the event of a spill. But since it lacks structure, the lightness of the backpack and the depth of the main compartment are more frustrating than they are practical. No matter how thoughtfully I packed it, everything would disappear as if into a … black hole. I always had to use two hands and a hard surface to find anything — not great if you’re also holding a wriggly or fussy baby with a dirty diaper.

travel kid luggage

The Caraa baby bag is the opposite, designed so you can find exactly what you need quickly. It’s all black on the outside, but the lining is cream-colored, so all your stuff is easy to see. It has three insulated outer pockets, two non-insulated magnetic sleeve pockets, a back zipper pocket that can fit a tablet or an iPad but not my MacBook Air, and a hidden zipper pocket for tucking away the optional shoulder straps. Inside, there are also four clear plastic slots and one elastic rimmed divider for organizing diapers . But the bag is bulky in a way that outs it as a diaper bag, and it can’t really double as a work bag since it can just barely hold my 13-inch laptop in the main compartment (and even then, the computer fits only without a protective sleeve ). The wealth of pockets, while useful, annoyingly causes me to carry more than I need.

The Colugo diaper tote is roomy and very attractive, with a handful of useful inner pockets and two small zipper pockets on the outside. It also has a removable cross-body shoulder strap. But I’ve found I like it better as a weekend bag, because it’s too big and heavy to use on a daily basis in New York City.

Where the Double Trouble beats them all is in its simple and ergonomic design. It’s comfortable to wear as a backpack despite a lack of extra padding or tactical-looking straps — the wide, woven nylon straps hug my shoulders gently as they evenly distribute the weight of whatever I am carrying. I can even wear it comfortably while carrying my son in a baby carrier , and the placement of the outer pockets makes it easy to reach around and grab my phone or a straw cup one-handed. When the subway car is crowded, it’s easy to switch to carrying it by the top handles as a tote. It fits in the storage bin of my compact Yoyo Stroller or in the basket of a Citibike. Best of all, it always makes my outfits look more sleek and put together, so much so that I chose to bring it with me instead of a purse on a recent trip to Japan and even got compliments on it from the salesperson at the Beams store in Kanazawa. It’s more than just a work bag, or a diaper bag, or an alternative to a purse for sightseeing, and I plan on carrying it long after my son is out of diapers and carrying his own backpack .

* We will be carrying 2-3 bags (large size, the kinds one carries overseas, but with l+b+h < 180cms each) weighing 15kgs per bag. What is the luggage storage facility on the train for such heavy baggage?

* Is there an option to "check-in" the baggage so that they can be transferred to the luggage- car , like we do with air travel?

* I understand that the luggage weight limit per person is 36kgs. Can this be across 2 suitcases or does it have to be 1 piece only?

' class=

There is no separate luggage check-in. The amount of luggage is basically limited to your capacity to carry it, so 36 kg per person would be any amount of bags you can handle yourself.

In Nevskiy express there are two types of seating - open-carriage seats and 6 person compartments. In both cases there are overhead racks, able to keep large suitcases. Enjoy your ride and stay in Russia!

Thanks a lot, Vasily. This is super helpful.

Vasily, one more question - on the rzd.ru website, I see that some times seats available are tagged "Seat for disabled passenger". Can ordinary passengers choose these seats or not, at the time of online booking?

' class=

Of course, no. They are for disabled.

They are bookable to those who have a registration as disabled in the government system. Non-disabled pax cannot book them.

Thank you both.

Also, would you know whats the luggage allowance on Sapsan trains? Its not clear from the rzd.ru website. Tia!!

See reply # 1.

Same as for all Rissian long-distance trains, 36 kg or 50 kg in first class. The fact is noone checks and weghtens your bags, unless they look really bulky. The rule here is "what you can carry yourself" is fine...

travel kid luggage

The cabin is shared by 6... and therez not much place for big bags. Unless all others dont have any

Thanks everybody, for your responses. We completed our journey on Sep 16 and had no issues with two large bags. We were able to place them both in the overhead bins. And small carry-ons / backpacks under our seats.

Edit: Our return was on the Saspan where too we did not have any issue. Our luggage was easily stowed away in the luggage hold area (racks) at the end of our coach and small bags/backpacks went on the overhead shelves. There was sufficient space.

Best Ride-on: Trunki Kids Ride-On Suitcase

What sets it apart: Of all the ride-on luggage for kids, Trunki has the best ratings and reviews. Best Personalized Kids Luggage: Pottery Barn Kids Mackenzie Spinner Luggage
