The Pennsylvania cities of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are 257 miles (414 kilometers) apart. Pittsburgh is located in the state’s Southwestern corner and Philadelphia is situated on the opposite side—in the state’s Southeastern corner (very close to New Jersey and Delaware).

Regarding transportation, there is not a wide variety of ways to get from one city to the other. In fact, choices are quite limited compared to other cities. The fastest option between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia is flying, which takes approximately one hour and 30 minutes (not counting the time spent in the airports) and typically costs around $460 dollars and up. The least expensive option is the bus, which takes about seven hours and costs around $30 dollars.

How to Get From Pittsburgh and Philadelphia

Although these two cities share a state, unfortunately, there are not many options for traveling between them. Travelers with children might want to plan on driving, as that offers the most flexibility. Those in a time crunch should either drive or fly, but that depends on the flight options, times offered, and exactly when you want to go. Budget travelers will want to opt for the bus.

  • Train: 7 hours, 45 minutes, from $100 dollars
  • Flight: 1 hour, 30 minutes from $460 dollars
  • Bus: 7 hours, 30 minutes, from $29 dollars
  • Car: 5 hours, 329 miles

Amtrak offers the only train service that runs from Pittsburgh’s Amtrak Station to Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station . It’s a direct train, however, it only runs once a day (usually departing around 7 a.m. in the morning). The ride takes approximately 7 hours and 45 minutes, so it’s a lengthy trip, but there will be Wi-Fi and power outlets to charge your devices. The cost of the train is between $100 and $200 per person, depending on the type of ticket you purchase.

It’s a fast flight from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia. However, American Airlines is the only airline that flies non-stop from Pittsburgh (PIT) to Philadelphia’s International Airport (PHL). The airline offers a number of daily, direct flights (usually five) on a regional jet. The flights usually depart at 8:15 a.m., 11 a.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m., and 8:40 p.m., but the schedule changes on the weekend. It’s definitely a quick, easy flight—taking on 90 minutes—but it’s not offered at a budget-friendly price. The average cost of a round-trip ticket is $500, depending on the season.

Keep in mind that other airlines, such as Jet Blue and Delta, offer connecting flights to Philadelphia, but they are not desirable options. They take much longer (over five hours), cost more, and will take you out of your way, as they connect through Boston or Detroit.

There are currently two bus options available if you need to travel from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia. Keep in mind that the bus takes about the same time as the train, and is much less expensive.

The Megabus departs once or twice a day from Pittsburgh (10th Street and Penn Avenue) and arrives outside of Philadelphia’s 30th Street station in Center City. On the days that offer two buses, one usually departs in the morning and the other in the late afternoon. One-way tickets cost around $30 and the trip takes seven hours and 30 minutes, depending on traffic. The bus offers free Wi-Fi, power outlets, and restrooms on board.

The Greyhound Bus Company offers several options per day from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia. One-way tickets range in price (from $34 to $69) for the economy, economy extra, and flexible ticket choices. Every bus has individual power outlets, free Wi-Fi and a restroom on board. The travel times vary drastically, so be sure to take note. The trip can take anywhere from six to nine hours, so choose your route carefully. This trip departs from Pittsburgh’s Intermodel Station and arrives at the Philadelphia Bus Station.

Driving from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia takes approximately five hours and can potentially offer the most flexible and straightforward mode of transportation. If you wish to stay on your own schedule, it’s the best option. The journey is mostly highway driving, and you should only expect to encounter minor traffic as you leaving Pittsburgh (especially at rush hour). However, expect to hit a lot of traffic as you approach Philadelphia. The main highway into the city (Route 76) is notoriously busy at rush hour times, and bad traffic can occur during any time of day.

What to See in Philadelphia

There is an incredible number of fascinating sights to see and fun activities to do in Philadelphia. A few of the more popular spots include the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the Franklin Institute and the world-class Barnes Foundation art museum. Philadelphia has an incredible culinary scene as well. You can try a (world-famous) cheesesteak, of course, but you can also dine in a number of top, award-winning restaurants as well. If you’re a sports fan, Philadelphia has a number of teams that play throughout the years: the Phillies (baseball), Flyers (ice hockey), 76-ers (basketball), and Eagles (football).

Commonly Asked Questions

Despite the fact that Philadelphia and Pittsburgh share the same state, it’s not easy to travel between these two cities. If your trip takes you to both locations, be sure to plan your transportation carefully in advance to avoid high rates for the train, bus, or plane. Be sure to plan around major holidays. For example, Independence Day (July 4th) and New Year's Day are both very popular in Philadelphia, and train tickets may be unavailable or highly-priced.

So so. Terrible aircraft choice for that leg of the flight.

Due to one crew member not showing up to work, our flight was significantly delayed causing us to miss our connecting flight in Houston to Mississippi causing us to be delayed by more than 6 hours and missing our event all together. Very disappointing. All because ONE crew member called in sick. United did grant us a $15 meal voucher, which was a small but appreciated concession that I wasn’t able to use because I ordered my lunch and paid for it before applying the concession, and the staff said it was too late to use it. Ugh! We also had a TWO delay coming back from Mississippi, but that was on American Airlines and it was due to weather, so not their fault. Anyway, not at all impressed with United’s handling of our flight and the HUGE disappointment of missing our important family event for our 90 year old mother. All that money and all that stress and emotions for nothing. Having to wait the hour to bring an employee from LAX seemed like something that should not have happened. Why don’t you have a local back-up? Santa Ana is not a little airport in a rural area.

Flight delayed from Cape Town to Washington then got diverted to miami and in miami we had to fend for ourselves , im still trying to get to Shreveport now

delay several times and wait extra long to board. no entertainment service because there are problem for some rows. always encounter some delays for the last flight of the day.

I just wrote a text which was supposed to be for the flight from Denver to spokane not Frankfurt to Denver.

On time every leg of the journey and exceptional staff at counter, gate, and on board. I haven’t travelled in US for a long time and was genuinely surprised how pleasant this was.

The delays (5 hrs) were a comedy of errors, and the multiple safety issues encountered were very concerning.

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Crew was great and did their best to make us comfortable and captain came out at the beginning to announce why the flight was delayed, weather situation up ahead, and kept us updated throughout the flight.

they made me check my carryon. There was space in the overhead bins.

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Food options were limited which is absolutely embarrassing for a Flight of this size The staff did not come around as much and I am not accustomed to such poor service from American Airlines Drinks I believe were limited to soda and water

Was as expected. Good leg room on planes - much appreciated.

Smaller, regional aircraft limits amount of overhead luggage space. At least there were jetways at both BNA and PHL. First class food service was minimal with the usual assortment of packaged snacks (nothing creative) and no handiwipes. American tries to turn around aircraft too quickly without enough time to clean the planes. WIFI service did not include TV programming.

6 plus hour delay with no explanation. No wheelchairs to transport us on arrival. Very disappointed.

Food choice is limited, entertainment better than average, seat leg room terrible

While I received notice that AA 478 was delayed, the flight departed PHX and arrived PHL more than two hours late. The first class cabin service was mediocre; there were no pre-departure beverages offered; there were no warm mixed nuts served with cocktails; there was no personal greeting to me as an Executive Platinum member by the first class flight attendant. While the flight operated safely, its arrival at 0219 in the morning in PHL ended a very long day. I do not feel that American provided first class service.

Late arrival due to gate being blocked by stalled truck

delayed delayed delayed. was supposed to have a 2 hour layover and very nearly missed my connection.

We truly had not one problem. Nive enough to receive an upgrade. Flight attendants were extremely friendly and cheeful. Gladly will continue to fly American.

First....my trip was from Ft. Myers to Philly (not the other way around). Plane was clean, staff was friendly and flight was efficient with boarding and flight time. Thumbs up all around.

Seats are very small and extremely hard. Too close together. The person next to me had average shoulders and was very far into my 'space'.

Flights are great except for the ticketing service on the terminal.. Too little employees taking care for lots of flights.

The crew was great but it felt gross how spirit charges you for every little thing. Picking your seat should be free (first come first served). Beverages and food I get. But picking where I sit? Gross.

Never got on the plane! My 2pm flight became 4am so I had to book southwest!

Everything was fine. I really enjoyed our early flight from philly to Orlando as well as the crew.

No outlets to charge phones on 5 hour flight, snacks were for purchase only, missed connecting flight due to weather delays, was denied vouchers for overnight stay.

I paid for internet and it didnt work. Server was down

The flight experience was terrible. Extra bag charges were exorbitant, and the customer service was incredibly poor. Flight attendants were rude and unhelpful. Post-flight, we endured a one-hour wait for our luggage, only to find our bags severely damaged. Overall, a highly disappointing experience with Spirit Airlines. Not recommended.

well unless you buy food, it's not aplicable to rate it. you need to make an NA column. Also, there isn't any in flight entertainment on short haul flights. Again, make an NA column. Everyone knows seat comfort is a thing of the past. No way to get comfy.

Crew members are very rude and not cooperate with passengers.

Well, I didn’t have food! So NA wasn’t an option. I’ll be back!

The flight was delayed 1 hour. The Seats are the worst most uncomfortable chairs I have ever sat in. I have folding chairs in my Garage that are more comfortable.

Was using the bathroom and arrived 1 min 45 secs passed the terminal door closing . Wouldn’t let me on the flight and Frontier gate attendants as well desk manager were very rude and didn’t not assist nor provide any type of guidance. As a result I will not be able to get my children for the holidays. Frontier I will never fly with you all again. I also purchased a perk package what a waste .

5 MINTUES LATE TO THEIR CHECK IN AND THEY WACK ME 200.00 BUCKS FOR RE BOOKING FEE AND PUT ME ON ANOTHER FLIGHT. @ THE BOARDING GATE IWATCH THEM BOARD MY ORIGINAL FLIGHT RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME- TOATL SCAM!

They delayed my flight so long that I would miss my connector. After that they gave me a free transfer to a different flight. My current flight was supposed to leave at 630am. They put me on a plane that leaves at 730pm the same day. Then they didn’t tell me but the connector flight was now 18 hours later the next day. And they refused to put us in a hotel for the night in the connector city. After hrs of them rudely arguing with us we cancelled our flight and went with a better airline. I will never fly frontier again. They owe me about 1200 dollars and refused to refund our money on their mistake.

Was delayed because of the crew. More efficient in time management.

Everything costs something on this airline .... even snacks!! What a racket! We got to the airport nice and early only to wait in a line while there were no reps at the counter. Once we got to the counter to check our bags (which cost almost as much as the flight to check), we were told we were too early?!!! and had to wait an hour to check in. Then, to add insult to injury, because we didn't PAY to choose our seats, we were seated separately. I HATE THIS AIRLINE.

Retrain your customer service representatives at the check in counter. Retrain the customer service representatives at the boarding gate. The only associates that were pleasant were the flight crew. Worse trip that I ever had and maybe reason I don't want to fly with Frontier Airlines again. I was told that I missed my flight at 5:40 a.m., was given 2 tickets because it wasn't a straight flight. I was charged an additional $99, and even had to pay again for my bag $99. Just a horrible experience.

What could have been better? Anything. Everything. The airport experience was horrific and the most disorganized I've ever seen. The bag charges and upcharges are so bad that Frontier os actually MORE expensive than "premium" carriers. The aircraft is uncomfortable and everything about the Frontier experience is designed for maximum discomfort. It's like the worst possible nasty Greyhound bus in the sky/ Horrible.

President Joe Biden visits Philadelphia as battle for Pennsylvania heats up ahead of 2024 election

By Alexandra Simon , Nate Sylves , Dan Snyder

Updated on: April 18, 2024 / 7:34 PM EDT / CBS Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The battle for Pennsylvania is heating up as President Joe Biden hit the campaign trail in Philadelphia, just days after former President Donald Trump visited the swing state.

The candidates have made four campaign stops in Pennsylvania in the last five days .

Trump held a rally in Lehigh County last weekend before President Biden crisscrossed the state this week.

With more than six months until Election Day, there are still a lot of questions, challenges and hurdles the candidates have to face.

During Thursday's visit to Philly, Biden was endorsed by members of the Kennedy family at the Martin Luther King Jr. Rec Center in North Philadelphia.

Kerry Kennedy says despite the fact that her brother, Robert Kennedy Jr., is running against Biden as an independent – she and about a dozen other members of the Kennedy family are backing Biden in 2024.

APTOPIX Election 2024 Biden

"He personifies the values that my father envisioned, that President [John F.] Kennedy envisioned, of decency, of democracy, of human rights, of civil rights. And that's why we're for him," Kerry Kennedy said.

Robert Kennedy Jr.'s independent campaign is one of the big question marks heading into what's expected to be a tight 2024 race.

Trump, who visited the Lehigh Valley last Saturday, is dealing with a slew of legal issues, and experts say both Trump and Biden are facing serious voter fatigue.

"We're seeing, certainly in our work at the Committee of Seventy, a lot of, 'I don't like my choices. I don't like either of these candidates. I can't believe we're doing this again,'" Lauren Cristella, of the Committee of Seventy, a nonprofit, said.

Through the primary season, Biden has also seen an impact over his handling of Israel's conflict in Gaza at the polls . Nearly 19% of Minnesota Democrats voted "uncommitted" in that state's primary.

In Michigan, the "uncommitted" vote topped 13% and protesters followed Biden to North Philly on Thursday.

"As long as you guys are going to fund wars and not feed babies, then we're gonna vote uncommitted," a protester said.

Cristella says while Pennsylvania doesn't have "uncommitted" boxes on its ballots, she believes there will be some form of protest through write-ins or no-votes. The question is – will this carry into November?

"There's a lot of time between now and November, and I think some people want to register their disapproval, but might ultimately come back home," Cristella said.

Biden speaks in Scranton, Pittsburgh

On Tuesday, April 16, Biden traveled to his birthplace of Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he discussed the economy and proposed higher taxes for the wealthy at the Carpenters Training Center.

Then on Wednesday, the president visited the Pittsburgh headquarters of the United Steelworkers union, where he pledged to block the acquisition of U.S. Steel  by Japanese company Nippon Steel.

Biden promised that U.S. Steel would remain an American company while taking aim at his likely GOP challenger for the White House, former President Donald Trump .

"Taken together, these are strategic and targeted actions that are going to protect American workers and ensure fair competition," Biden said. "Meanwhile, my predecessor and the MAGA Republicans want across-the-board tariffs on all imports, from all countries that could badly hurt American consumers."

Biden also said he'd push for the U.S. trade representative to  triple the tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum imports .

Fourth Biden visit to Philadelphia area, Delaware Valley this year

President Biden has committed significant time to visiting the Keystone State already this year, particularly the Philadelphia area and surrounding Delaware Valley. Thursday's visit marks the fourth time he's traveled to the region in 2024.

With Pennsylvania shaping up to be a battleground for Biden and Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, the president and First Lady Jill Biden traveled to Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell in January to mark the third anniversary of the Capitol insurrection .

A week later Biden visited stores in the Lehigh Valley to highlight the value of small businesses and talk up his economic record.

And on March 9, Biden ramped up his 2024 election campaign with a speech at Strath Haven Middle School in Delaware County, his first rally on the heels of the  State of the Union .

During that speech, Biden laid out his plans for a second term, vowing to protect reproductive rights, touting his record on the economy and calling for a ban on assault rifles.

Biden and Trump, already the presumptive Democratic and Republican nominees, are widely expected to win their respective primary races in Pennsylvania on April 23 .
